Not very good. The group lectures are good...discussion sections are useless. She's also not really an easy grader and doesn't curve. Spends too much time talking about feelings, etc. Treats you like a kindergartener
not a good teacher, really strict. i enjoy the class though
this professor sucks so bad I had her last year and she is the worst
hard but accessible during office hours, you just had to pay attention in discussion.
Nichols plays favorites so try hard to get on her good side. She gets tripped up pretty easily with the accting/finance stuff and is only mediocre with OB (her specialty). She is tough with grading participation but fair with the PTP. If you get her, just make sure to do well on objective stuff like exams, especially if your not a favorite of hers.
worst professor i have EVER had at BU; as someone already said, she plays favorites hardcore and will judge you by first appearances. grading is unfair and retardly erratic at a standard that's totally unsuitable at the level that she teaches: kindergarden hands down, do NOT take her even if your damn life depended on it
She is very helpful! Thoroughly goes over all homework and is very clear. Gives a lot of quizzes which are actually beneficial for preparing for tests. If you do the homework, reading, and go to office hours if you need help, she will love you and help you a lot.
I don't know what you guys are talking about. Prof Nichols is great. One of the best 122 professors. She hasn't chosen favorites in my class at all. She goes over the homework thoroughly, answers everyone's questions, and is a great professor all around. Class was actually fun.
Class is boring. Grading very subjective.
She, yes she doesn't deserve the title Professor... She is very subjective.. VERY SUBJECTIVE.. I really think that she should try to be a genuine Professor and actually teach rather than picking favorites.. No wonder she matured so disgustingly.. I'll give a million dollars to anyone who can get an "A" while being on her bad side.
She is super nice and always willing to help you outside of class. BUT she does pick favorites a lot. That being said, she is very nice and patient if you are struggling.
You better figure out how to be one of her favorites and then you're be golden. Very picky about presentations - things like wardrobe, transitions and small things that other professors never cared about. To study for the tests, just look at the slides, don't read the book.
Good professor, clarifies lectures during discussion. Provides extra quizzes and homework to help students out. She's willing to help whenever you need it.
Picks favorites. Picky about powerpoints. Both were mentioned below. However, if you develop a relationship with her, she's nicer to you. Manageable teacher, but I am sure there are more fair, nicer options.
I love Prof. Nichols, but it's easier to connect with her if you spend time with her outside of class. She's very helpful, cares about her students, and pays attention to things that other professors overlook. She is always willing to meet with students one-on-one, and the favorites thing is true!
I had her for SM 121, SM 122 and OB 221. I love her. She's a great teacher, presents material well and engages the class. She's very helpful outside of the classroom and always accessible. She gives useful advice and really cares for all of her students.
I don't really know what people say when she pick favourites. I don't really feel so. I enjoy my SMG classes a lot and understand the lectures better with her explanations during class. Her classes are useful and she's pretty friendly too.
Nichols is fantastic - if youâ??re on her good side. Luckily this is not hard to do, just go to office hours early in the semester. She is really helpful in 299 topics and general academic advising. She made the 2 hour discussion pretty enjoyable. If youâ??re doing the industry project, READ THE ANNUAL REPORT FIRST - it makes everything easy, I promise!
She is AMAZING. I don't understand the bad comments that was posted before this. She is very helpful, very clear, and this year her class (which is ours) got the highest average too! She helped me a lot and I wouldn't have passed without her. the TA was amazing too, Dan. He is the best.
Great teacher who helps convey material as well as it could be explained. Grading is a little bit harder than other SM299 profs, but its worth it with Nichols. Her classes are insightful and really fun. People complaining about her picking favorites are probs just antisocial, because if youre social at all in class, you'll have a good relationship.
Prof Nichols is by far the worst professor I have had at BU. She seems to have no knowledge whatsoever of what she is teaching. I felt far less prepared for exams than my friends who had other professors. I would avoid taking any management course with her if possible.
Great professor, better person. Get to know her, it will pay off. She is a down to earth person that will understand your needs and explain things to you so that you can understand it. She is a hard grader, an A is REALLY an A. I didn't go to lecture more than a few times, payed attention in discussion, participated, and ended with a decent grade.
She is an unfair and tough grader. Only one team in our class got higher than 90 and the lowest was like 74-ish. DO NOT EVER TAKE HER CLASS YOU WILL REGRET FOR YOUR ENTIRE LIFE. If you have her next semester, please accept the sincere apology from your upperclassmen.
The WORST ob professor. Do not pick her as your professor. She assigns grades depending on whether she likes you or not. The class environment is so tough that you can barely breathe. Other professors, like prof. French, gives his class all A-'s and A's. Nichols only gives one A and the rest is below B+. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES!!!
Professor Nichols is amazing! She is extremely knowledgeable and always willing to answer questions. She tries her best to engage everyone in the class. People say that she's a tough grader but honestly if you seek her help, you WILL improve. Highly recommend.
Professor Nichols was very engaging during class and was always interesting to listen to. She likes people who participate often. She is a little sassy and accepts sass back. Fun to have. Easy presentation grader.
Great professor! Very personable and good at explaining concepts. Real and down to earth.
She is absolutely the worst professor I've ever had. She played like she cared about everyone but in fact she only cared about the ones she likes. The project and presentation guidelines are so vague that you have to guess what she wants and when you ask her she wouldn't tell you. Don't take her classes if you don't want your life in misery.
She seems to lack certain knowledge of teaching. Studying her slides or reading text book rarely help for the exam. At the end of our class, she just celebrate what the class have went through without giving any review. Other class grades are much higher, because their professor gave hints or have review session before exam.
I don't know what did the losers above did in Professor Nichols's class, she is so helpful and she tried to get every one involved in the class. BTW, her class ranked the top three among all the class in SM 131
As a first semester freshman student, Prof. Nichols was my favorite professor. She tries to make the class fun and engaging, and knows the material very well. She makes sure we are prepared for the exams, and participation is a huge grade so be sure to voice your opinion. She is a VERY tough grader when it comes to presentations, but overall great!
I loved this class. She kept the students engaged in the material. She was very helpful and her office hours were fair and helpful. She cares about her students and is willing to help. She takes her job seriously and is a tough grader. One thing: DO THE READINGS. Without them, you are a blank slate in her class.
She is a really good teacher, answers emails quickly, encourages participation, and is very interested in the subject. Go to class, raise your hand, and you'll pass with an A.
Professor Nichols was one of the best professors I have had at BU. She is very supportive and helpful. The group projects were very hard and there was a lot of reading but I know I would have not loved this class so much if it had not been for Professor Nichols's discussion sections.
Seems tough at first, give her time! Worth it!
Yes, she is a tough grader, but she is also an excellent teacher. If you are looking to excel, are dedicated, and want to do great in this class take it. It will require work, Participate and do the readings! It is an easy A is you are a good student, if not the you might struggle. She is very nice and keeps the class interesting!
Professor Nichols is a tough lady and is intimidating at first but she is an exceptional teacher. Her excessive questioning and in depth analysis gives students a great idea of the topic at hand, and she prepares students very well for tests. She cold calls and is heavy on participate. She is tough but great and makes you work hard.
She's an amazing teacher for sure. Athough a little scary to begin with because of all the cold calling, keep up with your readings and participate in class, and you will get a lot out of it.
She is amazing. She really cares about her students and wants to help them succeed. She's always in her office ready to help and answers to emails right away.
The best professor I've ever had. She's so nice and incredibly helpful. Her class was interesting and engaging. She has high expectations for students but is also incredibly supportive and genuinely caring. She is incredibly nice and very helpful. She is a perfect professor.
It seems like she is really caring, BUT she is more willing to help the students that she likes, if she does not like you, you will have less chance to speak in classes. When I asked her some important concepts after class, she did not really want to explain them for me because she thinks she has already explained them in her class, but she did not
She is a magical unicorn sent from heaven above. We are unworthy of her perfection. I am forever grateful to have taken her class. I love this woman.
Professor Nichols is by far the best SM131 section. She's a really all around great person and teacher. The class itself is definitely not the easiest. She grades pretty tough on attendance and the presentations.
Absolutely horrendous professor. Honest to God if you have her for OB221 do all you can to transfer out of that class. Poor job in terms of presenting class material and wasn't useful at all when it came to extra help, to the point that i went to another professor. She's condescending and never looked like she was eager to teach the class.
She always encourages students to participate in class. She teaches the class well and always tries to explore the subjects with different perspectives, which makes you think beyond what you know. She is tough on presentation grades and the guidelines aren't that clear. You kind of need to figure out what to put on the presentation. Good overall.
She's very tough on presentations. There's no clear guidelines on what she wants to hear. She's also very tough on participation grading. Her discussion are pretty good in general though. I would not pick her as my professor if I had a choice as she's hard to get a good grade.
She's very tough when it comes to grading. Too bad, the discussion professor is not by choice, I would not have picked her. If you want a good grade, good luck in her class.
She is an amazing professor and actually does care about the class and students. You can tell she puts a lot of work into preparing for the class and she looks for attentive and wiling students back. If you lazy and are not willing to do work then don't take her class.
I took Nichols for SM131, and she was fantastic. She's a tough grader but really cares for her students and will work with you to help you. For fe101 however, not so great. she flies through the material and is not clear when you ask for explanation. If you're not math-oriented, I suggest another professor especially since the midterm is worth 43%!
SM131 is already a boring class that is required. You do not get a choice for your professor for your discussion who's grading describes most of your grade. Nichols teaches a lot of the sections. She grades pretty harshly on presentations and papers. Participation is 15% make sure you participate, it may just save you. Hopefully you dont have her.
Nichols is a tough grader and its hard to do well unless you talk in class. Participation is 15% so make sure you talk in class. Her discussions don't prepare you well for the exams so you will want to look at the powerpoints before. Hopefully you won't have her.
Nichols isn't great at explaining the material. She kinda just flies by the slideshow and then lets the class go. You will probably want someone who is more experienced with this class and teaches you the calculator. I only did well because there was a 10 point curve on the final. Don't expect that to happen again. Pick someone else before her.
Shell teach you a lot about the class and is really knowledgeable about the topics. Shes really engaging and makes class discussions fun and informative. She does cold call on people, but this does really help you with knowing the information which will in turn help you on the test. I highly recommend taking her classes.
Nichols is a real hardass but make sure you befriend her at the beginning of the semester. She definitely has her favorites, so get on that list. However, she really does try to push her class and expects a lot. If you don't want to do work, take another professor. That being said, you'll definitely pass tests if you have her though.
She is awesome. Really good person, even better professor. The presentations are VERY tough. If you take her, you will 100% pass SM131.
Nichols is a hard teacher but if you work hard she will recognise and reward it. She also is there to help you succeed, so go to her office hours. SM131 by nature is just not a well structured class, so an A is not easy but Nichols will make sure you pass if you put in the work. Requires good time and effort but it pays off.
Her class is so hard when compared to other classes with different professor. Moreover, she has preference over her students despite what we learn in class about bias. If she likes sure, then you will pass the class; However, if she doesn't like you then you are more likely to get bad grade in class like presentation, participation, etc.
Nichols is such a sweetheart. Genuinely cares about her students and is always willing/available to help. The class is definitely hard, and there's no way you will ever burn SM131 out of your memory, but if you participate, go to office hours, and show that you are trying Nichols will boost your grade. Make her like you! She is awesome
Such an incredible teacher and person. She is a tough grader for sure but I am truly so grateful to have had her as a teacher and a mentor
She goes in-depth during her discussion sections which lead to her sections having the highest test average on the tests. If you PARTICIPATE in discussion getting a good grade is definitely feasible.
If she likes you, you will get a high grade in discussion; If not, your grade will be terrible.
Participation definitely matters a lot. Not the worst discussion teacher, but not the best either. Can be kind of passive-aggressive, but overall a decent teacher.
This was my first time taking Finance at BU. The material itself wasn't too difficult for me to grasp, especially since FE/SM132 recently changed the format so there were more midterms with increasing weight. However, Nichols would single me out during class and dismissed my method of approaching a problem. Wasn't my cup of tea.
Loved this class. I learned so much. Definitely a harder class but she sets you up for success for the exams and you learn so much. Really important to participate!
Seems really caring at first, but after that she only let the students she likes speak in class.
she said her students are her family in the first class but ONLY the students she likes. She only asked specific ones if they have questions or can they hear her when on zoom. If she doesn't like you you will probably get completely ignored. To bad we can't choose the discussion teacher. DONT TAKE HER CLASS.
I felt like I was wasting time in Nichols's discussion sessions. She would only copy the lecture prof's slides and gave poor explanations. In class exercises were super boring and she had her list of favorite students. If she doesn't like you, you won't even have a chance to participate. It's sad that the SM131 sections are mandatory assigned.
WORST CLASS EVER
Self-centered and uninspiring. Grade toughly on group project and papers. Our team went to discuss our final presentation with her and literally got trashtalked. We have to start over our research because we have to talk about what SHE wants to listen or we will get poor grade. AVOID HER if you want to safe your GPA.
The class itself isn't very interesting but she really tries. Truth be told, this course is solely based on luck. If you get a good group, you'll have a much easier time than if you don't. Similarly, if she likes you, you'll have a greater chance at receiving a higher grade. Overall it's just... meh.
She tries to engage students in the class during the discussion, making it easier for students to participate. It is hard to participate over zoom but if you go to in-person classes, then you're more likely to be able to participate. If you go to her office hours, she gives really good feedback, especially on the presentation.
I absolutely love Nichols and this class. Shes extremely knowledgeable in business and loves class engagement. If you participate often youll do fine.
Extremely knowledgeable. Was able to keep the classroom conversation constantly flowing. Really sweet lady, but she does cold call at times and she does seem to call on some students more often than others. Get on her good side and participate and you'll have a good time. Class is good, prepare for team work, and make sure you do your readings.
Prof Nichols was awesome. Had her for 131 and she really changed my perspective on business. She really cares about you and get on her good side so shell call on you more for participation. Very accessible outside of class and she is so helpful during OH if youre ever confused on anything. Highly recommend.
Professor Nichols is super sweet and really wants her students to do well. Participation matters in this class so I would try to raise your hand a lot and build a relationship with her. The class overall was fine, but I would make sure to read and take notes on all of the readings especially in module one, as that test is the most specific.
Nichols is nice but cold-calls and can be condescending- she makes a big deal out of v little things (ex. ppl showing up to OH w/o telling her beforehand). Like the other reviews said, she def has her fav pick of students. Sometimes she'll let you participate then skip over your comment without saying anything. An average prof, but exams are fair.
Prof. Nichols is such a great professor. Participation really matters so make sure to answer/ask questions and go to office hours so she learns who you are. She really cares about helping her students do well, especially if you interact with her. I had a couple group members that didn't participate and she gave good advice about it.
Professor Nichols class is kind of boring. Her lectures are very dry. She reads this off the slides like a robot. She also picks and chooses her favorites. This will hurt your participation grade. The exams are also very confusing and full of trick questions. like if she wants you to fail.
Professor Nichols has been the most impactful educator that I have ever had in my academic journey. The classroom was definitely intimidating for the first month. But, after having personal matters rise up, I was fortunate to have Professor Nichols sit with me, connect me with resources at BU, and have her continued support and care. Love ya!
Prof Nichols is super caring and explains the material really really well. I had heard horror stories about this course and was scared but she really got me through and going to her office hours really helped. One of the best professors I've had. Tough course but its worth it.
SM131 in general is a tedious course, pass it the first time. Nichols really cares about her students, that can be heard in her tone during lectures. She does cold call so do the readings and watch the lectures. She is understanding, if you tell her you didn't read she won't call on you. She is second to Brunel so she helps create the test.
Awful class avoid at all costs!
Prof Nichols is very biased towards students of certain demographics. If she doesn't like you, she will ignore you in class & emails & act like she never saw them if u approach her abt it. She also cuts u short in participation if she doesn't like u (always) or sometimes won't even pick u. Avoid her. She also limits grades of presentations as well.
I absolutely loved Professor Nichols. She is a caring professor out of the classroom, as well as engaging to listen to speak and keeps discussions interesting. I have heard horror stories about SM131 before taking it, but I'm so glad I did. My grades on exams really reflected in her ability to teach well. I hope I can have Prof Nichols again.
The grade is so limited.
Quoting from another rating of another professor: "The less this type of professors in BU, the higher our ranking would be." It applies not only to that professor, but also to Nichols + several other professors in QST. If you are a white girl then take her, otherwise NO
Okay teacher, bad person. If you get her make sure you do ALL the readings because she cold calls a lot and will disparage you if you don't do the reading or don't understand it. And I believe that she is the person who came up with the idea to limit the grades by distribution and thus made SM131 unbearable. Ironically she's a senior lecturer lol
To paraphrase a comment from below, if there were fewer professors like this at BU, we would be a much higher-rated institution. Lots of reading, so be prepared, but it is manageable. Professor Nichols is not encouraging and will tell you if you are wrong but will not offer feedback. She will just move on to the next person leaving you in silence.
Professor Nichols is nothing but utterly useless to 90% of the class. Grades are extremely harsh, and unless you are a white girl, you will get 0 attention from her. Do not take her.
She's okay. She'll like you if you participate and do the readings, she'll also cold-call you. She's biased as the semester progresses and she decides who she likes and who she doesn't. Lots of reading.
Challenging and provoking professor. No doubt you will learn a lot if you participate and apply yourself but professor Nichols requires A LOT of effort to do well in her class.
She is a though professor, participation is a must to do ok in her class. She can be biased towards student during the duration of the class. She is a very harsh grader and does not like when students disagree with her. If you have to take her class make sure you get on her good side.
Always knows what she's talking about. You have to come prepared for discussions but they're great and she always keeps it dynamic. Doesn't read off the slides because she herself is always prepared. Cold-calls but it's okay if you say you don't know/didn't do the readings, as long as it doesn't become a pattern and she knows you usually work.
Professor Nichols is such an amazing professor. At first, you may be a bit intimidated, but show her how much you care and want to succeed. She is a tough grader because she has very high expectations for her students and is passionate about the courses she teaches. She is always available to meet outside of class in person, zoom, email or texting.
Honestly, Professor Nichols is a really good professor, and regardless of my grade I felt that I learned a great deal in her class. Although, there are extremely difficult questions on her exams which are specific to the readings. She is very available for help out of class.
She was engaging but she played favorites way too hard. Considering this class relied on your participation, it was very unfair how she developed favorites after the first week and neglected your participation to choose them to speak in the discussion. If you currently have her, become her favorite or you'll have a tough time getting a good grade.
Is pretty uptight. Always making a big deal out of nothing. totally useless course content and a ton of assignments... as if she's only here to make our lives miserable.
It was important to read each article in-depth, and I mean twice. The course was incredibly reading-intensive, and if you didn't understand the material, good luck in the discussion. She fosters an environment where participation is competitive but may single you out if you don't know the answer. She also likely won't tell you your answer is right.
Has deep and informative lectures and cold calls to catch you off guard but other than that is a great teacher. Might have favorites but wants everyone to do well. Teaches you very well for midterms. The weight of grades is distributed perfectly between different areas and makes you truly enjoy what you are learning. Lots of reading for hw.
Nichols makes lots of time for students outside of class + takes time to explain evrything. Though she cold calls, if you do the readings, you are fine. Not pertaining to her, but the tests are quite hard. Yet, she sets you up well as she has a lot of influence in the sm131 content. Not too hard of a grader + get on her good side by going to OH.
She is an amazing teacher who wants her students to succeed. If you do the readings, you won't have to worry about her cold-calling. Attend office hours because she has candy and wants to make sure you understand the concept, even if it takes an hour. Super caring, but firm, and holds her students to a high standard.
Professor Nichols holds her students to a high standard and expects them to meet it. But once you take her for SM131, you feel prepared for the rest of the Questrom curriculum. She wants everyone to succeed, but the process getting there is tough, once you're through, you realize how much she helped you.
Professor Nichols is amazing. Her classes are engaging and well-structured. The discussions were thorough and included real-world examples, making the material feel relevant and practical. While you do need to keep up with readings and participate, overall great experience.
Overall solid professor. Class was intimidating as she is the course coordinator, meaning expectations for our class's performance were set high, however it did help with test prep. The class is super dependent on participation, but can be frustrating as she 100% has her favorites. Take notes on readings, raise your hand a lot and you will be ok.
Incredibly rude.
DO NOT TAKE NICHOLS. She heavily favors certain students. She makes SM131 harder than it needs to be. Gets annoyed if you go to office hrs. Has control issues: Once prevented a student from using restroom during class. Expects you to arrive early but consistently dismisses class late. Makes BU worse overall. Unreasonable and unclear expectations.
Solid Prof
Nichols expects a lot, but if you put in the work, she'll help you succeed. The readings are intense, but using resources like unstuckstudy can make prep easier. Attend office hours - she wants you to learn.
My experience with Professor Nichols was nothing short of horrific. Her grading policies were outrageous and it was clear that she does not care about students. She conveyed an immense attitude of superiority which was extremely rude. It felt as though she was constantly on a power trip portraying the characteristics of a high school principal.
Professor Nichols is knowledgeable but carries an air of superiority that creates an unwelcoming class environment. She's unnecessarily strict, even about basic needs like using the restroom, and grades harshly without offering meaningful feedback. Shows little regard for student well-being or success. Choose other instructors if you value support.
Very obvious favoritism, weirdly rude for no reason, and honestly some comments that felt borderline racist. If you weren't on their “favorites” list, good luck getting any respect. Made the class way more stressful than it had to be. Genuinely confusing how they're allowed to teach.
I had somewhat of a mixed experience with Nichols. I would say for any SM131 professor, you will definitely learn the most during her class. I found her style to be interesting and she was clearly passionate. Grading was pretty questionable, with ambiguous grading and an over-emphasis on participation (you should participate 1+ times per class).
She is very kind but grades terribly. She shows her superiority in class, very strict sometimes for no reason. If you want to learn, take her class. there's so much content… If you want credits and good grades, I recommend another professor. Attendance is also hard
I have no idea why she wants to be referred to as "Professor Nichols." Rebecca doesn't even have a doctorate.
She is a caring professor and is really engaging during lectures but she is quite strict with grading. It felt like our paper was being critiqued constantly and when we tried to show her improvement, she gave us another harsh critique and this was the pattern over and over again. Personally, I just felt burnt out from it.
She is great for this course as she is one of the main professors, so she is very educated and prepares you well for the tests
This professor was very disrespectful in general towards the class and specific students. she goes out of her way to call you out on things in front of the whole class. Would not recommend
Extremely disrespectful towards students, often treating students like disciplining children with a major superiority complex. Gone out of my way to suck up to her a bit and was able to get a good grade.
WORST EXPERIENCE AT BU QUESTROM. She is very kind but grades terribly. She shows her superiority in class, very strict sometimes for no reason. If you want to learn, take her class. there's so much content… If you want credits and good grades change her, she is so WEIRD. Attendance EXTREMELY MANDATORY. AVOID HER
Extremely strict about grading; will sarcastically ask hard questions during Q&A that are irrelevant to your presentation. Doesn't give much support
Get ready to spend your entire semester reading the same thing over and over again. Glazes Europe the entire course. Repeats the same info over and over again but in a different way. You will never know what is on the tests unless you read every single word of all 10,000 readings. Genuinely the most irrelevant, useless course I have ever taken.
