worst teacher ever, like others said, she makes the class horrible, the class should be easy, but she makes it very hard. she likes to fail graduating seniors, take junior year, she will fail you even if graduating-it happened to 16 people this semester

I think everyone is just jumping on the bandwagon. She is a good teacher but she makes the class challenging and the tests are geared to ensure the students understand the material. I got an A but I had to work for it.
This professor is should be fired for unfair grading practices do not take her.

I took her class last fall...she accused 11 (there may be more...but that's all I know about) out of 26 people of plagiarism...I hope she gets fired...I worked my butt of in that class and I should have a B but b/c of her little plagiarism stunt I got a C
Awesome professor and mentor. Very helpful and kindhearted. She leans a little to the left but usually tries to let students think for themselves. And she's pretty cute.
Dr. Powers is a helpful teacher and will anwser every question that you have but she is mean!!!!!!! DO not take HER. SHe accused soooo many people in our class of plagerism and I hope she gets investigated over that.
Knows her stuff. If you just read the highlights of the text and go to class its a sure 'B'. She is a great professor and teaches with enthusiasm. Take her for sociology 2110.
If you like enthusiasm than I recommend this teacher. She makes you stay the entire period. Tests are moderately easy, but that is only if you study...easy studying. Maybe try to find a better teacher....:/
She has been one of my favorite professors at ECU. She is smart and interesting. I loved going to her class.

This professor is heartless! Her tests answers all have more than one correct answer. She is very unclear in helping and explaining material. Overall she is very fake to students and a horrible teacher. She should not be a part of the ECU staff.
She is a great teacer, she knows her stuff and is very enthusiastic. If you read and go to class you'll get a B if you study a little you'll get an A. You only have 4 test grades but she'll tell you exactly what will be on the test. I recommend her to everyone, especially to freshman. She is helpful
This is a really good teacher if you came to college to get an education. If you expect a walk in the park, this is not the class for you. You will get out of it, what you put into it. She is very fair and helpful I got an "A" because I earned it not because she gave it to me.
this was the best class i took this semester. shes very enthusiastic and is good at explaining things in a way thats easy to understand. her tests are kind of hard, but just do the assigned reading and youre all set. there are only 4 test grades, so you have to do well on them.
yeah its vague its sociology. she is really nice and pretty good lookin too. the class is hard but not crazy hard. i barely ever studied and got a C and i have a 3.0 if that gives you some insight
I thought her tests were unreasonably difficult. She wants to make class fun but it ends up like she is tring to hard. But I though overall the class was ok
TEACHER SUCKS! I loved the material I learned from the course, but Powers is horrible and unfair. I did all assignments and participated all the time in class. I went 1 PARAGRAPH TOO LONG on my final paper and she gave be a zero on it, which brought me down from an "A" to a "C"!
I don't know why everyone is saying such bad stuff! I went to class and participated, and I made a B without really studying too hard! She was great! I would take her again!
Could they have found a worse professor. She quizzes everyday. Assigns work as if she is the only class we have.If you like to read 5-10 chapters a night take her!The test are ridiculous.She basically told us on the first day we would all fail.This is a senior level class so you really have no choice,and test covers more than 10 chapters at a time.
This lady is so flighty. The class is horrible. She gives out quizzes at the end of class when you only have like 5 minutes to work on them. I didn't learn anything new in the class, but you can't really get out of it because it's required. Maybe someone new will teach it later...I would definitely wait until you HAVE to take it.
Dr. Powers is the kind of teacher that gives you what you earn. If you work hard, you get a good grade; if you're slack, you get a bad grade. She's caring and helpful.
Don't listen to what other people say about her. She is a really good teacher and loves what she does. He class isn't easy but if you work, you can make an A. Go to class, her lectures help A LOT.
The class was fairly easy. If you read and go to class it's a breeze. You can tell that she really enjoys what she does and she is very enthusiastic. You better hope that there aren't any major natural disasters while you are in this class. We spent the majority of the first few weeks discussing Hurricane Katrina and almost nothing else.
You definently have to read the book for her class, her notes have nothing really to do with her test and her test consits of like senarios, so make sure you understand all the terms from every chapter! And you read the entire book in her class!

Dr. Powers isnt as bad as everybody says. She does work you tho, so dont expect to slack off and get an A. I studied and read the material and got a B in the class. She only has 4 tests and no extra credit tho so be careful

she is crazy. her tests have nothing to do with anything we learn in class. They are impossible. I study 2 hours a day for this class and I still make 60's on every test. She is a hardcore liberal shes so granola lesbian vegan hardcore world peace "GO OUT AND VOTE COLLEGE STUDENTS!"
She was no good. I dreaded her class everyday because she would just ramble on about not important things. To do good on the tests you need to read the stories in the boxes; once I started doing that I started making better grades. I would take someone else if possible.
She's alright as a person, but she isn't a very good teacher. Her tests come out of left field sometimes and even if you read you will be confused on the test. I don't reccomend her, but there were people who did well in her class somehow.
I actually liked her bunches! she is always so perky and ready to help.. the problem is that more often then not we're too afraid to put in the effort to meet her half way... her tests aren't easy but then again they aren't supposed to be. she's a really good person and an okay teacher. take this class.

I think she wrote that post about working hard i worked hard an managed a D. she is a joke makes easy topics hard and is the worst possible teacher ever. Not only that her rules in class are so dumb. Yikes!! This woman busted out singing "Let it Be" in the middle of class. She's crazy, but nice. Her tests are hard, even if you attend class. She's usually way out in left field. She gave me a D on our research paper, and I had it re-graded by an English prof.. who gave it a B... yeah. Don't take her!!
Dr. Powers is a wonderful person however, the notes that she wants us to write down is useless and hardly have them on the test.I do like class discussions, but sometimes she will be rude and interupt you when you are wrong. tests are sctrictly by book, if your not a discussion learner, dont take her.
This lady is a nightmare! I got an 89 in her class and she wouldn't round up because she believes that curves are "inappropriate", as she says in the email she just sent. It's crap. We started out with 160 in the class and ended up with 60 because SO many people dropped her! GET OUT NOW!
Dr. Powers is a wonderful, creative, interactive professor. Some people may find her difficult because they are not interested in the subject, but if you read, attend, participate, and pay attention in class and above all ASK QUESTIONS you will do very well. She has some strict policies but she wants you to succeed! Take advantage of office hours!
If you are taking this class drop it now. More than half of my class dropped this semester. She talks about one thing in class and you will not even see it on the test. Everything on the test is not covered in class. Something are based of in class but most you have never seen before. She has four tests and that is all your grades
Powers is a decent teacher. She will test you on things she talks about in class so you may want to go. READ THE BOOK. That is probably the one thing that helped me in that class.
Good teacher. She teaches creatively. Her tests aren't too hard if you study a little and go to class.
Prior to this class, I was excited to learn about it, but you really have to WORK for this grade. At this point I find organic chemistry easier. You MUST treat the textbook as the bible and I recommend never taking this as a night class. She projects the attitutde (during hrs) "why try now cuz your never gonna do well anyways"
Dr. Powers is an interesting woman who cares for her subject and students. Some say she is hard but truth is she isnt. She is always full of energy and trys hard to make the class interesting. There were moments where I was confused about some things but she is always willing to help. Just read your book, go to class and just enjoy the class.
Dr. Powers is a very sweet lady. She tries to teach in a creative way by engaging her students. She doesn't use powerpoints and most of her tests are based from the text book. She does put in stuff in her tests from random things she talks about in class. Go to class sometimes and read the textbook and you'll get a good grade
Very energetic and funny professor! Unfortunately her class is a waste of time. She shows videos and covers things in class that aren't even on the test. Save yourself the trouble and pick a different professor.
She's a bit odd. Sweet lady though treats her "college students" like children sometimes and is ditsy but she loves what she teaches and enjoys it.
Dr. Powers is a nice person, but a bad teacher. We only watch videos and listen to guest speakers who talk about everything from studying abroad to immigrant farm workers. I have not learned anything about sociology by taking her class, but I did make a good grade by going to class and reading the book.
do not take this woman as a professor. She is horrible, only gives 2 grades, and treats you like a child. Don't take it; you will do a horrible job in this course and cry, just as I am. Don't do it.
She's a little quirky, but a good professor none the less. A lot of the questions on exams are things that you HAVE to attend class for rather than reading assignments.
Professor Powers has been by far one of the best professors I've had at ECU. She is a bit all over the place but makes the class fun. If you go to her for office hours she tells you everything you need to know. She appreciates everyone's opinions about life and really incorporates the in class assignments into the exams.
Powers is not a very good teacher. She writes on a piece of paper with markers on the projector for notes. Handwriting is barely legible and notes aren't clear. She rambles. You are better off just reading the book. Randomly takes attendance maybe 3 times a semester. Very enthusiastic about the class, but not very helpful at all.
Absolutely the worst professor I've had at ECU & I'm a senior. She's all over the place with her "lectures", if you could even call it that, it's mostly her rambling off the top of her head. Her assignments make no sense, do not bother asking for clarification bc she will only confuse you further, you essentially teach yourself. buy the textbook!
Lectured on things that did not go along with the readings very well. Very confusing class. Tough grader on projects and tests are hard. Gives study guides if you beg for them. If you read, you will pass the tests and quizzes.
The only grades are the 3 tests. You better work for those test grades. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT! When you ask questions she will barely answer your question. For the extra credit if you try then you will get it. The extra credit will save your grade.
Horrible teacher. I honestly don't think she knows what she is talking about when teaching. We never accomplish anything. No grades, gave me an unstatusfactory in starfish for my work && I completed everything early. I think she really needs to reconsider her career choice.
There are only 4 graded assignments which are 3 exams and 1 final exam. Attendance isn't required because you don't accomplish much within the class period. Read the assigned chapters for the test and you're almost guaranteed to pass the test.
Going to class seemed pretty pointless since she was unorganized and rambled a lot. Her grading criteria was vague and made it difficult to understand expectations, which were very high even for college students (most professors are more understanding). The tests were open book and notes which was essential since you basically teach yourself.
love her, during lectures she only focused on the important stuff that will be on tests, instead of telling us useless info. shes super kind and caring. the book is VERY helpful to have, but if u cant get it for financial reasons she provides a website that summarizes the objectives for the chapters! the tests are straight from the textbook
If you don't have common sense, don't take this class. Read the syllabus and figure out everything you need to do beforehand because Powers isn't the type to remind you ahead of time. Her notes (or lack there of) are just her talking and writing key concepts for you to read later in the book. Pretty easy grader, make sure to read, random attendance
Lectures get WAYYY off subject and some of the material doesn't make sense. Her test questions are confusing. She randomly takes attendance. She's always happy and excited about class. Weekly discussion posts. Honestly, if you do the discussions then you'll pass and I never studied for test but still passed them and she lets you have a cheat sheet
Really cool lady, with lots of cool stories BUT pick a different professor. Most of class is random topics that have nothing to do with concepts that are tested on. You are expected to read the WHOLE textbook by the end of the semester, yep all 530 pages. It would help if there were powerpoints that are gone over in class, but nope just doodles.
you NEED the textbook &you have to read the chapters &teach yourself. she lectures by just talking & what she lectures on is pointless. she is HORRIBLE at responding to emails. Takes random attendance but after the first test let us have a page of notes for exams. grade is 4 tests & attendance. if it wasnt for that page of notes i wouldve failed.
Absolutely do NOT take this class with Dr. Powers unless you enjoy reading a boring textbook and learning absolutely nothing from the professor. At least 3 students in my class, myself included, sent emails to the dean about her and nothing changed. She gets paid to make you read the book and do absolutely zero teaching of her own.

While Professor Powers is a very sweet person, she is a nightmare of a professor. She provided literally no instruction whatsoever. If you don't have the book, good luck, all the tests/quizzes are based on direct textbook passages. She also grades very arbitrarily and words all her questions in a very convoluted manner. Barely made an A-
a terrible teacher got her doctorate from a 50 cent store if you want to feel like you are setting in a high school woodshop class take dr powers students out of control and you will learn absolutely nothing and I mean NOTHING waste of time I was required to take dodge a bullet and take methodology with literally anyone else or you will regret it
REQUIRED textbook!!! You have to use it in discussions and for all the quizzes/exams. You will NOT learn anything, all you do is read a textbook. Don't go to her help, you won't receive any. She doesn't curve any grades AT ALL!!! Nor does she drop any lower grades!! If you want a easy "A" class, this IS NOT the class.
Professor Powers is the absolute WORST. Try to avoid her class at all cost. She doesnt teach and the tests are only based on the textbook and assigned readings. The problem with her is that the questions she makes for quizzes/tests are impossible. Her choices for the answers are the exact same concept/idea and its a hit or miss to get it right.
4yrs @ ECU, BY FAR WORST prof Ive had the displeasure of having. Did absolutely 0 teaching. In an asynchronous online class, made a point to ask us NOT to email her. Gave us a list of chapters, thats it. 0 communication, empathy, caring, or help during a PANDEMIC. Highest overall grade: 93, 1 A in ENTIRE class. Also vry subjective answers to Qs.
Ive taken her class this Spring 2021 semester for Social Inequality and if I could go back in time I would choose a different professor. This professor was rude and unprofessional and when asking questions regarding material in her class it always came back with a disrespectful reply. She should be fired from her job! Would not recommend her!
The whole class is textbook heavy and with very few quizzes. There occasionally things she goes over online with videos but there are so many links. I would never recommend this professor.
Be aware that you're mostly graded on quizzes and packback participation. There is no extra credit or anything of that sort. I wish I knew this before hand. I wouldn't recommend this Professor to anyone.
This class wasn't too bad. Only things graded were 5 quizzes, 2 exams, & packbacks. Do not skip the packbacks. Exams & quizzes were difficult. After first 2 weeks, no notes were provided. You MUST have the book, all the answers are in there. I didn't read it, just skimmed. Very few questions were study-able on quizlet. Quiz/Exams were open note.
Professor Powers is pretty easy to get along with and as long as you actually read the material you should be fine. Tests are open book and the final is an essay that you are given the questions beforehand. Now the text is a thick one with some hot topics. But overall an easy class.
The program she used was confusing and heavy with assignments. Basically taught yourself through reading. I do not reccommend
Please don't be like me and take a risk just because you see a difficulty level of 3. I don't recommend this professor. She grades based on all exams and tests, no extra work and the tests are extremely hard.
Honestly, every test was like "do people deserve rights y/n" and that was the basis of almost every question. It's extremely easy which could get boring but Dr. Powers played movies in class to display a point and used personal experiences which kept my attention. Because the exams were easy there wasn't a lot of stress in lecture.
Overall was a good professor, and isn't too hard on grading. You just have to pay attention to when things are due and submit it on time and you will do well in the class. She is very sweet.
Dr. Powers is a really great professor! The assignments aren't really difficult. It's pretty much reading a book and taking notes for the weekly assignments. The exams are a bit challenging but as long as you study then you will be fine!
