Fantastic! I had her in my first year and she was so good at making students aware of all of the facilities available to them. Lectures were really interesting and so were the tutorials (we deconstructed an Eminem video in one of them!)V. helpful.
Amazing instruction, really forced the class to challange the traditional views of the city, and to critically analyze the future of our growth.

One of the best profs I ever had, very interesting and obviously she's really interested in what she's teaching. Her intelligence and knowledge is scary at times. Tough, but in a good way. Glad I took this class with her, because learning is fun!
Holy smokes! She is the best prof ever. Highly intelligent, really knows her material. Plus, funny & passionate about her subject: this definitely makes learning fun. Treats students with repsect, is helpful and approachable. Take ANY course w/her, wow!
She thinks way too highly of herself, and talks down to her students. She uses intimidation and makes it difficult to respect her, or the class.
she gives brutal midterms, has no idea how to communicate in a communications class, and i recommend that students should avoid her at all costs!
shes pretty good. There for help when you need it. I found the midterms to be ok as long as you know your stuff. I think shes a good prof
My biggest problem with her is that she is often condescending.
Awesome! I will take any class that Dr. Sullivan is teaching. She is intelligent, lively, and kept me interested in every subject. You need never agree with her, you must only present a good argument for your opinion. There's a lot of material and the class moves at a quick pace. Lazy people need not apply.
She is a genius. Very insiteful and absolutely hilarious and cynical. I would recommend her to anyone who is up for a challenge.
I loved her! She is very passionate about what she teaches and as long as you pay attention, do the readings and go to class you'll be fine. She makes it very clear that if you seek her help via email or office hours you'll get a better grade, and you will if you do. One warning... SLACKERS BEWARE!!!
I took the class in block week and did not have big expectations. I was blown away! Best prof I have ever had! She is absolutely brilliant, and was able to keep everyone engaged.
For a theory class (and thus a bit complex) she makes it much easier to grasp. She is open to helping you if you are struggling and repeats complex ideas in different ways in lectures so that they are easier to comprehend. Applicable theatre productions and exhibits into class time "field trips" tend to arise which help understanding of content.
Super helpful. Excellent level of communication. Professor Sullivan openly accepts feedback from students and adjusts the course timeline to meet their needs. Very passionate about her job and literature. Outstanding!
Really intimidating at first, this is one smart woman, but she is exceptionally helpful. She genuinely cares about her students and is willing to meet their level.
Absolutely the best professor at the University of Calgary. She is an excellent lecturer and a very intellectual individual. She is a great helper, communicator, genuinely cares, and is always straightforward. She always replies to emails and is always open for office hours. Definitely take a class with her if you can. It's tuition well spent.
Best prof I have had in a long while! Very clear on what will help get you good grades, and willing to go over your work. Provided free scholarly articles instead of textbook. Provides ample material to study and learn from. Very smart woman, and friendly as long as you try your best. I found her fair, and enjoyable :)
On the contrary, I found this course to be incredibly interesting and I found Sullivan to be a great and funny lecturer. There were many assignments, but if the time and effort was put into them, it was possible to do really well! The quizzes were easy, and the readings were also fairly interesting. I recommend taking this class with Dr. Sullivan!
Dr. Sullivan expects her students to show up in class, pay attention, and put effort into the work. The first exam was difficult but she curved it and it significantly improved my mark after she received feedback. Sometimes she's tough but very knowledgeable about feminism and current happenings in the world. I would take another class with her.
Definitely one of the more enjoyable profs I have had. Very blunt which makes for entertaining lectures. She admits to her faults of poor test writing skills and tendency to go off on tangents and made up for it by curving exams, taking feedback and posting lecture podcasts. Very helpful with final assignment, extended deadline. Fair, empathetic
One of the most supportivededicated profs I've had, but the lack of clarity made this class frustrating. Assignment instructions are vague, and she changed her mind about what would be on the midterm the night before the test. Lectures are interesting, but you need to attend them all and ask for a lot of clarification or else you'll be lost.
Rebecca is a wonderful person who genuinely cares about her students and getting to know them. Very flexible with deadlines and always willing to talk with you and give feedback. The class is very interesting and there's a lot of discussions, so get ready to participate. Tests are easier than she makes them sound. Too many readings, tho.
this being a theory class I had expected it to be hard but she made it harder. It was a year long course and we only had one midterm, one group project and a final essay. So if you were to fail one of them, you'd fail the class. I found her intimidating. Midterm was hard and so was the essay. Would not recommend, take it in the spring instead.
Required: openmindedness and critical thinking abilities! Such a fun class and gave me tons to think about, I have recommended her women's studies class to my male science peers... And they actually seem a little interested.
Her tests are all on D2L. They're word for word on her power points. As long as you do the written assignments and know how to use key word search on her tests, you'll get an A. Her TA will watch you like a hawk the second you look like you aren't paying attention. God forbid you go on social media even once in this class.
The mark you get is proportional to the effort you put in.
I am a new transfer and this prof intimidated me a lot. She's intelligent and knows her stuff, but she does have selected few students that she would talk to even in the middle of her lectures. She definitely teaches with an iron fist, and have strict rules about when to see her for help. There's a lot of reading which her tests are based on, hard.
Dr. Sullivan is extremely enthusiastic about what she teaches. I find her lectures are clear and her powerpoints very helpful. Dr. Sullivan will often provide extensions for assignments because she understands the pressures of being a student. She is a very compassionate human being and will do everything she can to help you understand the material
Rebecca can get very passionate and head off on tangents, but the class itself is very enlightening and a great option.
All tests are online and are super easy. The lectures are really interesting and I really enjoy all of her classes. She is a fair grader and I would recommend her classes
Ms. S does a lot of open book online tests that are easy enough. She also has a couple of assignments that take time but are not difficult. The class does carry some heavy content though, like abortion and sexual assault.
Dr. Sullivan is wonderful. She made sure everyone was comfortable and approached topics in a way that was revealing, but not harmful. This class truly is eye-opening and I recommend to everyone. She is hilarious when she talks about her stories but gets down to it when she needs to. Great prof. Passionate. Easy tests online. Fair assessments.
Rebecca is an amazing proff! She goes off on tangents sometimes during lectures, but in general is a very inspiring proff! I'm taking another womens studies course with her this year, and I'm very excited about it! She doesn't make anyone feel uncombortable, and welcomes class discussions. Midterm and final was online open book from notes.
I don't know how Professor Sullivan has such good reviews.. she is one of the worst profs I've had. She talks about being respectful and having a "braver space" but she cuts people off constantly and doesn't like an idea unless she thinks it came from her. If you do end up in this class make sure you run every idea by.
terrible prof. course taken for options. she only respects her opinions, and does not allow for discussion or looks into facts.
I took 315 with her and found her very disrespectful towards students. Her "braver space" concept is not followed by her as she regularly is rude and has called certain graduate students dumb. She takes more than a month to look at submitted assignments and insulted all of us about our writing abilities within the first week of class.
Does not grade assignments in a timely manner (at least 2 months). She rambles during her lecture (porn, Natalie Wood). Doesn't inform you of "assigned" readings listed as additional on syllabus. Is discouraging and berating. When she gives you feedback & you make changes you'll still get a C. Only she can be right. Do not take her class.
While her classes are easy, I would strongly suggest that any male students avoid her as she is blatantly biased. If for some reason you do have to take her, just keep your head down and avoid any logical discussion. Do this, and its an easy course.
The classes are propaganda where critical theory, which is completely lacking in critical analysis/thought, is emphasized. Due to the nature of the course, the material isnt particularly challenging. I would strongly recommend avoiding the course if you are looking for intellectual engagement/debate.
Its difficult to articulate the depths of rubbish you will encounter in this class, suffice it to say that if you have any other option, you should give it serious consideration. Its unclear if Sullivan's disrespectful attitude is simply her character or the result of her many bigotries.
While Dr. Sullivan is very passionate about the topics, she can go on crazy off topic tangents. Like class long. Very biased course, so beware if you have an opposing view. Very unclear on projects and essays, and told to refer to the sylabus when asked questions, or she sends a rude mass email with snarky responses. Quizzes are extremely hard.
Boring lectures that usually consist of her rambling on about randomness. Never have I heard someone promote themselves as a good person by proclaiming she'd love to pay more taxes, not to forget the countless amount of times she goes on about being privileged. Went to her office hours once and was treated with disrespect.
She won't mark until the end of the term, so you won't really know whether you did good in the class or not. A lot of readings, (like 20-30 pages) for one lecture. Gave us a take-home test as a final, had 1 required question (quite hard) and 2 more from a choice of 4. Overall, the prof is strict but has a good humor.
Harped about privilege almost daily, claiming she should pay more taxes and insulted her son regularly in front of the lecture. Vaguely on topic tangents ate up most of the semester and when asking her for help she berated those seeking it for not looking at the syllabus. Extremely hard marker, and I am very disappointed with my experience.
DO NOT take WMST with Rebecca Sullivan. She is a caring and kind professor, but she is not ready to teach. For WMST313 she gave us 3-4 readings a week each 20-30 pages long . Then online, open-book, untimed quizzes are HARD because one cannot pinpoint what exactly should be studied. No review. No study guide. She rambles and leave you confused.
While I agree that Rebecca rambles on and her classes are material heavy, I am extremely baffled by these reviews. This class was the highest grade Ive received at uofc, everyone in my class received an A on papers and projects, and quizzes are not hard if you skimmed readings and knew key words.
Dr. Sullivan is an amazing individual, however, her classes are HARD. You get assigned 2 readings/week that are anywhere between 5-65 pages long. She doesn't mark things throughout the semester so you really have no idea how you're doing until the end. The final is also really difficult. If you like reading, go for it.
Rebecca is downright one of the worst profs I've ever had. She rambles every class without fail for 30 minutes and then tries to finish the lecture as fast as she can. She even said "I don't care about the USRI's because I am on a 10-year" while laughing. Take that as you will. Oh, and she gives you sometimes 2 60 page readings every week. Have fun
The participation aspect of the class with reflections is helpful to understand the weekly readings, but the two large quizzes we did were absolutely redundant. filling in the blank and remembering authors names does not test knowledge in any shape, way or form. im coming away from this class with nearly no new ideas or understandings.
She's not a bad professor, puts notes online but doesn't read from all the points (goes off on tangents a lot). She puts all readings online, you're expected to read at least one a week for reflections (these aren't hard). Instructions for a project a bit unclear, she's nice outside of class but you need to be clear when asking questions.
Rebecca is an wickedly intelligent, inspiring, bold and blunt human being. She isn't afraid to be honest and say what most wouldn't. She cares about her students more than any prof in that school. I took her class in my last semester of uni & am so grateful for it. Be receptive in this class & you'll get tools to use for the rest of your life.
makes fun of students, goes off tangent a lot then tries to rush the whole of the class into the last 15 minutes, very knowledgeable but doesn't put effort into her job, rude to students
I hated this class. I agree with a lot of Dr. Sullivan's opinions, but her style of teaching ruined everything for me. She is rude, can not stay on track for the life of her (will ramble on), and with assignments you might as well ask exactly what she would do bc otherwise, it's wrong. One of the most disrespectful and worst profs I've ever had.
Everything she believes is based on either her personal experience, or news articles. There were so many things she said that were against science. The most resent one is that there is no evident for overpopulation. Im not so sure what kind of evidence she wants for overpopulation, perhaps the same evidence people want to prove god doesnt exist.
If you can avoid taking a class with Rebecca, do it. If not, WMST201 is an easy A+ if you just show up and do the assignments. She might call on you in class and mildly harass you. She might also invite in a guest lecturer and then not actually let them talk and she will talk the whole 3 hour class. She really tries, but I don't know what for.
Very easy course! You will get marks for attendance and easy/small assignments. Interesting content as each week is a different subject. Personally I wasn't a fan of Dr. Sullivan's teaching style (she scares me a lil). I had 3 hour lectures once a week (with no break) and they were too long and got boring part way through.
She comes across as very rude, if it was not for my major being in women studies I would never take a class with her again.
DO NOT EVER have her as your professor. She is disrespectful to students. She gives boring lectures that are often completely off topic. She will call students out for the stupidest things. SHE GIVES NOOOOO criteria for her expectations on projects, you will not get a good grade no matter how hard you try. You have to be at every single lecture.
Not understanding, does not answer emails to students because she simply does not like to. Expects her students group project to be done by a professor and it is worth a large portion of the grade. she expects work to be the level of a fifth year when it is a first year class.
Sullivan is an unfair marker and only pretends to care about the wellbeing of her students. Regarding a group project, that was created while social distancing, she marked us down on our inability to collaborate and our chosen activist that she approved. She belittles her students in class, her lectures are long, and she comes across as hostile.
SHOW UP TO EVERY LECTURE AND DO EVERY REFLECTION (easy marks). My biggest flaw with this class by FAR was the group project. We were unable to pick our groups (extremely unfair) the group project had the most vague outline I have ever seen in my life as a student and she marks insanely hard, we included a ton of extra info. and got an awful mark.
Honestly, she's pretty crazy. Listen very carefully to the things she says because she hates repeating herself and will probably immediately hate you if you ask her something that she's already addressed. Participation matters cause there's a large portion of group work. Her attitude seems to flip a lot so try to talk to her on her good days.
WORST PROF I HAVE EVER HAD. Unclear with expectations, disrespectful and thinks she's better than everyone else. If there was one professor I would avoid at all costs it is her. I dreaded going to this class, even if the topics were interesting that week she found a way to ruin them.
Worst prof. I have ever had, unfortunately. She invited guest lecturers and talked over them the whole time, was incredibly rude to students, and overall made the classroom feel like a very unsafe learning environment with her yelling, threats to dock marks if we asked questions about the syllabus, and overall felt like she hated being a teacher.
Is extremely condescending and disrespectful and talks over guest lecturers. Told us, during online classes due to covid19, that she wouldn't respond to questions about grades or projects. Had to submit a grade reappraisal to the head of the department to get a mark changed from an F to an A+. Worst prof I have had in my 5 years of university.
She talked over students and didn't really listen to what they had to say and instead just kept repeating what she wanted to hear. The class I had with her was 3 hours long with no breaks people could go as they please in a 200+ person lecture which was distracting. The content was interesting but lectures were boring, not enough discussion time.
If you're looking for a decent grade that doesn't come with an aneurism, avoid Dr. Sullivan (and call her Dr. Sullivan) at all costs. She seems to go out of her way to be as inaccessible as possible, and will tell you stories of how she got a D+ in intro to economics and was a solid C student when you question her grading.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Dr. Sullivan should not be a professor. She is rude, unprofessional, and an extremely difficult marker while having unclear expectations. Sent an email to our class after receiving feedback that everyone was having difficulty (COVID) that we chose to be enrolled and cannot accomodate for everyone's personal issues.
Her class is eye-opening and she presents the material in a super respectful way. She breaks down concepts and theories, which makes it easier to understand. There's a lot of assignments which help you understand topics better, and she gives great feedback. My only criticism is group work. It's super difficult during a pandemic and unnecessary.
Had this class for Fall 2020, online. So much reading. Do not take this class if it is not a requirement for you. Sullivan is very harsh at times. She will tell you that because she didn't do particularly well in undergrad, it's okay if you don't. I wouldn't recommend her as a prof.
Worst professor of my entire undergrad degree. She specifically asks her students to not email her, she had the most unclear assignment expectations but is also not forgiving in any capacity. Least compassionate teacher I've ever met.
Honestly the worst professor I've ever come across; she is rude, speakers over guests and is actively unhelpful. She is a difficult marker with unclear expectations, when she is asked a question she has a habit of talking around the question instead of answering it head on. You won't find anything pleasant in learning the material under her watch.
If you dont need to take this course, do not take it. Shes rude to students and extremely passive-aggressive with grading feedback. She is a harsh marker and gives ridiculous time limits on written quizzes. The content is interesting, but she often goes of on rants about other things. She encourages students to not email her about anything.
I'm in my first year, and second semester and this is by far the worst prof I have had. She is rude and talks over people in our zoom classes. Also discourages students from emailing her because she explicitly says she won't answer. very hard marker for an entry-level class.
Genuinely one of the rudest profs I've met. I've never been so terrified to ask a professor for help before (and then have those fears immediately validated). Content is interesting and relevant, but it all makes Dr. Sullivan look like the biggest hypocrite as she is consistently insensitive and disrespectful. Maybe try practising what you preach?
She has so far been the most rude professor I have encountered, she explains her awful grading system so poorly and will not mark certain assignments if youre below an A. Shes passive aggressive and spends a lot of time arguing with students. She will not allow you to email her or you will break her code of conduct. Never again.
She was an okay prof but very opinionated. Lots of articles to read that you'll be tested on and lectures can sometimes be confusing. The material was interesting, she just wasn't my favourite.
Dr. Sullivan is okay. She tended to get almost frazzled often as she would go off on these big tangents and almost be shocked when none of us would laugh. I appreciate that there are so many things to break up the grade but the group project was horrible. She was rude in emails when asking about people to do it on and belittled our idea.
Her grading rubric was confusing so my group put together an email trying to figure out exactly what she wanted. She said that it was exactly what she meant and even asked to share the email with the class. When we handed in the assignment she failed us and said that wasn't what she was looking for. I saved the email as proof. Don't take this class
The worst prof I have ever had. Does not care about her students. She is rude and puts essentially no effort into teaching her classes online but expects the world from us in every way. I would avoid if you can, she will make your life miserable.
She is very heavily opinion based when speaking in her lectures. Many of her takes are somewhat harmful and arrogant
Amazing prof, very funny always had a good laugh in her lectures.
do not take this course, unless you want an easy grade with a not-so-great prof. (not worth it) very opinionated. not accessible outside of class AT ALL. in fact, if you try to contact her, she reprimands and disrespects you. she gives unreasonably difficult projects to do in a very short time frame. overall, very very rude
The prof is good in the first few classes of the course, and very inspirational, but she gets highly tiring and heavy later in the semester. She also is not in a good mood most of the time
Don't torture yourself with this prof. Preaches accessibility yet is extremely judgemental and dismissive to accommodation needs. She does not care. Exams and assignments are a joke. Readings take days to finish for every module. Gives no additional support to help students succeed by any means. Disappointing prof for such an interesting course.
Sullivan is a great professor for a gender studies intro class. She did a great job at picking relevant topics to share and made me sign up for more classes in this department. She can be a bit stingy sometimes about how she wants things, she is particular, make sure to note her instructions in detail, or else she will threaten to fail!
THEE most guttural unflinching feminist I have EVER learned from. Feminist Media Arts Activism = best class in my Women's Studies degree. Period. Content = analyzing feminist films. Her candor. Finally a WST prof unafraid of RADICAL FEMINISM. Badass & you all hate her bc she does not people-please as a woman should not. Her work speaks for itself.
For 479. I love little women and she has ruined it for me. Content was fun and not difficult but she the meanest prof I have ever had. She is rude, yells, won't post slides, doesn't allow phones, doesn't answer questions, you're not allow to talk to her before or after class, deletes emails, and grades tough with very few guidelines/feedback.
