Great Teacher! Really Helpful!
Becca is a really dedicated teacher. she is always willing to help her students outside of class. Labs are crucial so show up! theres a mid-term and a final exam, which are hard but study and you'll be okay.
Becca is such an awesome teacher!! her class can be demanding but only because i had a 3 hours class and we had to cover alot of info. All her tests are based on her notes. her test are somewhat hard but if you study..you will be fine. She is ALWAYS willing to help, and makes herself avaible to help with your grade or material. RECOMMENDED!
Prof Walker did a great job explaining concepts in our lab. Class atmosphere is very relaxing. Labs were tedious but they helped with lecture. Tests were not easy:Other professors I would recommend (great teachers but challenging coursework involved) (Franny Chan[BUSC1A&1B], Becca Walker[Geo8], Mark Boryta [Geo8],Olavarria[BUSL18], Mallard[SPCH1A])
dont even buy the book for this class, but take good notes. tests are all from lecture. easy class. take her. do NOT take J.P. for geo. take her instead. awesome person. new teacher, but youll learn alot.
VERY HELPFUL! VERY NICE. I THOUGHT THAT THIS CLASS WAS GOING TO BORING AS HELL BUT SHE WAS ACTUALLY FUN, SHES VERY DOWN TO EARTH. LOVES TO MAKE YOU THINK. TAKE GOOD NOTES, AND YOU WOULDNT HAVE TO USE THE BOOK. HAS INTERESTING LECTURES. CANT WAIT FRO OCEANOGRAPHY LAB WITH HER =] !!!!
Becca is so awesome! she's very cool & easy going. Her tests are based on short answers, m/c, & matching. It sounds hard but if u put enough effort u should be fine. read u're notes and book. I never thought natural disasters would be so interesting. It's fun to learn about scary hazards. She's just great! i hope to take another class w/ u becca.
Really down-to-earth teacher who cares about her cl****es; she loves to help you in any way possible, but expects you to do your part. Midterm and final are hard, but if you study and go to her review sessions you'll be fine. Don’t be afraid to ask her for help both in and out of cl****! She is cool, genuine, and honest!!! A+
She changed my opinion of science. At first I thought she was going to be extremely tough, but she is very helpful when there is a topic you do not understand. I would totally take a class of hers again. No book needed just take good notes. Tests are extensive, but come to class and participate!
Everyone here pretty much summed it up...Becca is awesome. De Fuca Beyoch!
I recommend taking becca for any class she teaches. She is new and hasn't been desnsitized by years of teaching. She is so into what she teaches and has the paersonality to pull it off. test and quizes are based on notes the labs are easy. And she will give you extra time to come in and study on your own or with her during her office hours.
Becca is a great professor. She is very kind, very knowledgeable, and pretty fair. You have to work hard and actually learn in her class if you want to pass, but it's worth it.
She is helpful and good teacher, but she is really hard and a lot of project and report. This class took me 3/4 to study and do project.
Becca is the best professor at Mt.SAC! I learned so much from her. She is patient and willing to stay after class to help students, but you have to work hard to earn a good grade in this class. NOT AN EASY A! I took her for lecture and lab in the winter and I enjoyed it a lot. There are required field trips, but those are very fun and interesting.
She is always willing to help even though the midterm and the final were really hard. i got a C on the midterm and a B on the final and i had to study really hard, but the field trip is fun. I would definetely recommend her.
She is a great professor, but this is NOT a kick back class.... your grade will depend completely on YOU!!! Attend class, take notes and study a bit and you'll do fine. She really tries to help her students and will make sure the class understands before moving on to the next topic!! Definitely recommend!
She is helpful and great teacher. Midterm and final are so hardest, but if you study to hard work and to do all lab paper, you' ll be fine. I really enjoyed her class and boat trip is fun.
Amazing teacher! A lot of work in class but she manages to make class very fun and interesting. She is really sweet and understanding. Loves what she does. Not an easy A test are difficult but if you study her material you can do great! I loved her class! I am going to miss her.
My goodness, this is one of the best teacher I have at Mt. SAC. You can easily approach her with any thing. She can sound a little sarcastic at times but that's what makes the class fun. I took her for in Winter for both lecture and lab. Highly recommend this teacher if you're trying to get a science and lab out of the way, or just for fun.
She's enthusiastic about what she teaches & her lectures are extremely clear. Her exams consist of multiple choice/fill in the blank questions and sketching &/or explaining a topic in a few sentences. They should be fairly easy if you pay attention to her lectures, study your notes, & read the text book.
I took her class with the lab at the same time. It was very fun and interesting. She teaches at a good speed and only the notes are used for the test, if you take all the notes and study them before the tests, you will do fine. Very fun and interactive class, the filed trip is awesome! I enjoyed her class very much and would take her again.
Becca is an amazing professor. She explains things clearly (Unlike other professors). Very blunt and sarcastic which I thought was a good thing because it clears out the dumb people. Not an easy A for sure, but you learn a lot! One field trip, midterm, and final. Do what she says and you'll do good! I recommend Becca!
Very cool teacher. She is super chill as long as you do not disturb her during lectures. She is one of the best teachers I have ever had. She was very helpful and tries to make lectures fun. I got an A but I worked for it.
Very good teacher. Basically all you need to do in the class is copy down the notes she writes on the board. She only tests you on those particular notes... Nothing else. They are short and simple as well. Only 3 assignments and 2 projects the whole course (and 3 exams). Super easy and chill class. I'm a slacker and I got an A (but I did try).
She made the class fun and you are pleasantly surprised with how much you learn, and how much fun you have. I really liked how she taught the class it flew by and she was helpful, friendly, and if you studied you did ok.
i will not sugar coat it, this class is A LOT of work and very long lectures. you should know basic algebra. i am not a nerd, not highly intelligent but i am a hard worker and didn't miss a day so if you're this you can count on a grade better than a C. don't need text book and exams are only 10-15% of total grade. professor is awesome.
Becca is great! you learn so much in her class. the fieldtrip was great! but you do have to work very hard to get a decent grade!
She is a very dedicated and great teacher. She can get a little anal but it is necessary sometimes. Gives a thick stack of in class work but hardly any homework. The reading is not needed but will help clarify stuff. Pay attention and youll be fine. I reccomend her.The field trip is fun too, so dont sweat it.
I say take the linked class with the lab... it is much better. You really get to know the people in your class. U need to pay attention. She gives you a study guide for test. She is a very dedicated teacher and want you to learn. May seem hard but stick with her. The field trip is very long.
Becca's awesome! She is dedicated to her students & its obvious she loves her job. Theres a lot of in class work but nothing unbearable. This means there is little to no homework, except for studying for tests. She drops your lowest test score along with your lowest lab grade. There is a mandatory over night field trip that you'll love! TAKE HER!
Becca is one of the best teachers i have ever had! I learned so much about geology in her class and really enjoyed what i learned! She really cares about the success of all her students! she can be a bit tough but its just because she wants to make sure we do our best! If you have to take earth science take Becca you wont regret it! Fld Trip rocks!
Becca is the best science teacher I have ever taken! Before Geology, I had very little interest in science, but now i'm a changed woman! (: She gives a lot of paperwork, but everything is connected to the class and is extra helpful on the tests! By the end of the semester, you would know almost everyone in your class by name. I highly recommend!
She is a great teacher both easy to understand and helpful. She will go out of her way to help you in anyway. She makes it so you dont need the book, and her test are not too hard if you pay attention. The field trip helps you learn a lot and its fun. She is a must take teacher because she makes you want to try harder. I highly recommend to take her
Becca is such a great teacher. I took this class simply because I wanted to stop hating science. It worked. She made me appreciate it a lot more and I actually found myself interested enough to come to class, do all the work, and listen intently. The field trips are surprisingly fun, you meet a lot of people and she's fun and cool to converse with.
Becca is super dope! Very chill class. Her notes are simple and relate directly to the test. Mandatory Mammoth field trip was whatever though. Only the biggest dumbass slacker can get less than a B in this class. Overall great teacher and person. She wants you to read but I never even opened the book and got an A.
she's great doenst give alot of homework.
This prof is a scientist and her passion for her subject shines through. Enjoyed this class as much as anything I've studied; well-taught; she double-checks with you to make she you get it before she moves on. P S. If you are a cheat, move on. She does not tolerate fools, but is extremely approachable. Great field trip.
great teacher makes sure you get everything before she moves on.doesn't give out much hw. the field trip was cool. you dont use the book maybe one or twice.
Becca is a great teacher! She's very thorough and her lectures are very clear. She has little tolerance for BS, and I love that about her. Take her!
Becca is an amazing professor!! She gives a lot of work but its always group work that isnt ever very challenging. Gives little hw and if she does it takes 30mins max. Shes very helpful and a lot of fun. Would recommend her to anyone. :)
Don't be late for class. Don't miss exams. DON'T use your phone. Put some effort in your work. She is fair, and she is great in giving lecture. She gives you the respect you give her. I would take any of her classes again given the opportunity, she is a great teacher.
Becca is an awesome teacher. I learned sooo much in this class and had fun too.The field trips were fun n put things into context. Now wen i hike i try to analyze the geology. In class work; almost no HW.Tests r kinda hard.Teaches so well txtbook is not really needed.I got an A but it wasnt too easy. Pay attention study ur rocks n mnerals.TAKE HER
Best teacher for science. She writes the notes on the whiteboard (very clear). Her tests aren't hard neither are her quizzes. I recommend her for class she is teaching. Very helpful!! And Super funny :)) Take her! ("not to scale" one thing you will hear a lot)
Becca is one of the best teachers Mt. Sac has to offer! Labs, 1 midterm, 1 final and a great overnight field trip in Malibu to top it all off! Very helpful and down to earth!
Very enthusiastic about subject, and extremely helpful. A little strict, but overall a great class with Becca.
This is my second time taking Becca. She's is very organize and literally one of the best professors at Mt.SAC. Don't need the book because her notes are on the test. Don't take any geology class without her because frankly the other staff of professors cannot compare!! Do yourself the favor and enjoy her witty and great lectures. YOUR WELCOME! :)
Grades are based on labs field trip project and two tests. As long as you do your labs and study you will do fine in her class! She is very very helpful and accommodates all of your questions. One of the best professors I have taken at mtsac. And no lab manual or textbook!
Took lecture and lab with Becca and she is a great instructor! It was quite a lot of paperwork but as long as you are organized/keep up, you'll be fine. Don't be afraid to ask questions! She makes you feel comfortable asking questions and makes sure you understand the material before moving on. Definitely would take another class with Becca!
Very confusing. Has a weird way of grading. I don't recommend her. Very rude when asking for help and visiting for office hours. Her study guides are confusing, and doesn't include everything on the test. This didn't seem like an intro to oceanography course. Oh, and she doesn't accept late work, whatsoever. Its surprising people actually like her.
If you can take his notes with 100% accuracy than there should be no reason for anyone to fail. She is fair and firm. Knows her stuff and willing to pass it all forward. If take her again without hesitation.
Becca is awesome!! I decided to take this professor because of her rating and it truly was the right choice. She is a tough grader when it comes to the labs and celebration of knowledges (tests). Don't worry, she prepares you for everything. Overall probably my favorite teacher at Mt. Sac.
Becca is amazing! She honestly makes the class. Sometimes it gets pretty boring talking about salinity and rocks but she makes it so interesting and holds your attention. If you attend class, pay attention, do your labs, and participate in class discussion, you should be fine for the tests. And the field trips are amazing!
Becca was awesome!!! She makes the class really fun. Some lectures can get boring but she keeps you engaged. I took the lecture and lab, it was not that bad. You have to show up, take notes and do the study guide. Everything in your notes is on the test. DRAW THE DIAGRAMS BECAUSE SHE TAKES THEM STRAIGHT FROM THE NOTES AND PUTS THEM ON THE TEST.
She was an alright teacher expect when it comes for asking for help especially with the labs, i always asked for help but she would just reread the question from the lab
Lectures are not that short. Doesn't really assign homework often, but just do the work that she gives you and there will be no problem. DON'T BE LATE and ask certain questions. She is really sarcastic, jaded, and snarky, so just deal with that as much as you can. Otherwise, just study from your notes from lecture and you'll easily pass the class.
Becca introduces the material in a way where it is real easy to understand. Assigns lots of class work. There is a mandatory fieldtrip. If you are willing to learn and put in hard work, then you will be fine.
Possibly my favorite professor at Mt. Sac. She gives very clear lectures and is obviously very passionate about the material. She is extremely helpful both in and out of class, and will go out of her way to assist you. Be sure to participate. It's worth it.
She is a great lecturer and very passionate about the subject. She is not the kind, which is why I would not take her again. When she teaches to the class, she is great. When she is one on one, she is unapproachable. There is a no phone policy, even for a small second and attendance is mandatory since there is classwork turned in most of the time.
Walker is an AMAZING teacher. One of the best classes ever taken. Make sure to make some friends - will be extremely helpful when you do your labwork! Two fun field trips that help in understanding oceanographic concepts. Several exams for each lab and lecture class. Encourages collaborative work and goes around to make sure everyone understands.
Awesome teacher. I took her for oceanography lab. She took the time to explain material and answer questions we went on a field trip. We have labs every day, the midterm and final are the only tests given, we had one project based off the field trip. gives extra credit. I recommend her definitely one of the best oceanography teachers! TAKE HER!!!
She is the worst lab professor I've ever had in my life. The worst professor I have ever had the displeasure of encoutering. Her labs are ridiculous and very difficult. She grades harshly and unfairly, her point system is set up in such a way where no one passes with an A. I am an honors student with a 4.0 and in my last semester, I barely got a B
SHE IS OVERALL A GREAT PROFESSOR. SHE REALLY EXPLAINS EVERYTHING AND HER LECTURE IS VERY CLEAR. I LOVE HER HANDWRITING LOL.. SHE DRAWS THE BEST OCEANOGRAPHY DIAGRAM... BUT HER TEST IS A LITTLE HARD IF YOURE NOT AN OCEANOGRAPHY MAJOR..... SHE GIVES STUDY GUIDE, BUT ITS NOT ALL ON THE TEST..
Becca is a great teacher. She is passionate about her subject. However, If you're not a geo major I would not recommend. Her exams are very hard. I had friends that had another prof. for geo 1 and I saw their exam (100 times easier than Becca's!) You cannot pass without studying. And mandatory 2 day field trip in the dessert!!
If you do the study guides and pay attention in class you're set. She actually teaches very well
Best advice I could give is that if you've taken classes before on the subjects she teaches then I think you could do fine but if you haven't then don't take her! She is pretty difficult to understand when she teaches and when you go to her for help she legit just repeats the question. If you know your stuff then she's a good challenge I think..
Becca is an amazing professor, the best I've had so far. She really made a hard subject easy to understand if you actually listen, participate, ask questions. There is a LOT of work throughout the semester. Just do the work and turn things in on time. The tests are kind of hard. I'm guessing she wants us to critically think about the topics.
I took her because of her good rating and i was right! She is an amazing teacher, she makes you love the subject. I needed her help sometimes amd she was very helpful I took this class during the winter semester so it was kind of hard but it was an easy A. If you study for the first 2 exams you dont need to study much for the final Take the class!
Awesome professor. She is PowerPoint/Lecture heavy but explains everything very well if you actually pay attention. Great teacher to take if you just want to get a GE out of the way. Pay attention and you get an A.
This is the hardest class I have ever had. There is a field trip that is quite difficult. However, it is fun.
She is a great Professor. The labs are fun. we work on them in groups and she is there if we need help. she makes you use your brain and learn a lot. I would definitely recommend her. But if you miss class you will fail because its a lab. there is a mandatory trip which is really fun. If you don't mind working for the class then definitely take her
Becca is so awesome, and an all-around effective professor. She's quirky and gets straight to the point in lectures, which makes it very easy to understand. She makes you feel comfortable and agreeable, which I think is such a great quality to have in order to effectively help students learn well. Love her!
I learned so much in the geo 1 class, very intensive work because she wont give answers to lab work so we learn to think for orseleves and trust our own judgment. allot of labs. this class changed me!
Becca is so amazing at explaining things in a way that is easy to understand. I highly recommend taking this class. She is an amazing professor to talk to if you are interested in the Geosciences field. One of the best professors that I've ever had
FUNNIEST PROF! She was very funny and always helpful. She did everything she could to help me get a good grade, I passed with a B!
Professor Walker is a very hands on professor who always goes above and beyond to make sure that her students succeed. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone who's in-search of a lab professor. Please keep in mind that this course has a mandatory field trip in order to be capable of passing the class
There are 100 workbook pgs that you must print out (yes all of them). Grade breakdown - Celebrations of knowledge, Geography quizzes, Oceanside chats, Project. You may have the option to waive the field trip requirement because of Covid. BEWARE: this class involves using Zoom and Proctorio which you must install on your computer.
She grades harshly and unfairly. The professor I took for ocea lecture was AMAZING, but Professor Walker is a nightmare. I couldn't find an answer on one of her labs, so I googled it and paraphrased what I read, but she said that it was "academic dishonesty." I asked my English professor about it, and he said that it was not academic dishonesty.
Rebecca talks more about her new dog than what there is to learn about Oceanography. Please just avoid her at all costs. 5 quizzes, 3 exams and 2 Projects for a 1 Unit class. There are better teachers, just look for someone else I promise you will regret it if you pick her.
super easy lots of extra credit opportunities
Professor Walker is amazing she is clearly passionate and knowledgeable about her stuff. She was able to inspire me to develop an interest in geology as well! Not necessarily an easy class, but she isnt trying to trick you or make it hard. I am forever grateful for her support during some complications on our field trip. Take her class!
Way too much work considering its an online class during pandemic.
Do not take this as an online class. Study guides don't really help on the tests, and pretty tough grader. Probably the hardest online class I've taken at mt. sac. Lots of assignments due every week.
Becca wants her students to learn but also have fun. I took her lecture and lab class this past fall and the lecture was online and lab was on campus. I did feel at times there was an overload on the amount of work but it wasnt too bad. The test are hard but if you study youll be fine. There is a field trip at the end of the semester.
Amazing professor but you have to be able to love FAST!! lots of work to do all the time and memorization
Prof Becca was awesome all summer sem. You do have one lab due every 2-3 days, but the work itself never feels overwhelming. Her lecture videos and other materials are straight to the point and actually helpful. You will do a quick discussion post for each lab but it is either answering or asking a question, so work is minimal. Loved her class!
She always makes herself available if you are struggling. This class relies on you being hands-on through labs rather than reading the textbook (which is optional.) She explains concepts in a way that you can easily understand. Super fun class with a super fun field trip near the end of the semester.
She barely teaches anything and believes you know everything. No textbook, no google, no lectures, and wish you finish every homework. It's hard since you know nothing. you have to install exam tools to monitor your action since it is one credit. not recommend taking her. you will have a headache.
Loved her class! It was fun, interesting, and educational! Lots of assignments, but if you watch her videos and utilize tools she gives you then you will pass. She wants you to succussed, but YOU need to put in the work. Feedback and availability was great. Responded quickly to emails and was flexible. Would take her again.
Easy class to understand, and the required field trip was extremely fun. Lectures were awesome, clear, and no textbook was needed. She's easy to reach outside of class and even gives us time slots to come in to study the minerals/rocks. Her exams are a mix of hands-on activities, multiple choice questions, and short answer questions.
Professor Walker is very knowledgeable and sometimes chill, yet I am extremely disappointed in her teaching. I spent an entire semester confused as whenever you ask a question you get responses like "if that's what you think". Extremely unhelpful, very much a figure it out for yourself professor. I would never take again.
I took Becca's intro to oceanography class this summer along with another summer class. Becca's class has a lot of work and she is a hard grader. I was always stressed because there is just so much to do. Average 4 assignments due every monday wednesday and sunday. She is a great teacher but not what I was looking for, for an easy GE.
Ok, look. She's not a terrible professor. In fact, she is quite fair with grading, has easy notes, and some tests that can be accomplished with ease. However, if you are on the Spectrum: Be warned. She lacks patience and will be extremely judgemental with your behavior. I was targeted a few times even though I didn't do anything.
Professor Walker is an excellent teacher to have if you are looking for someone to invest in you as a student. She is willing to help you make decisions about your education goals. She comes to you to see if you know the material, but also expects you to do some thinking on your own. If you take good lecture notes, the tests will be easy.
Took ocean1 & ocean1 lab with her: A LOT of work, almost like an honors class. 2 much work & information for a INTRODUCTION course. Slow 2 respond to questions probably due 2 all the work she picks through & grades VERY toughly. I am a 4.0 honors student & I think her class is 2 much for intro. Would not recommend especially 2 full time students
Loads of work for an intro class. Uses honorlock so Ipads aren't useful, and beware if you have an older mac- it wont work either. Uses one "free" pass for a workbook but it isn't actually a free pass, you still have to do it. You're better off taking an easier class if you have other stuff going on.
Little communication with her lab classes. Did not post modules timely, putting us behind on all of our classwork. I took this course on a 16-wk term, expect heavy labs with over 20 pages with no explanations. I have not received grades from week 3 and on, and term is ending next week. I do not recommend taking her class for gen ed requirements.
She is definitely a Karen. Highly recommend. Her tests are tough make sure to study. Memorize the rocks as work through labs your going to see them again during test and final.
She does not respond to emails, provides little to no direction or wkbk assignments, and strict policies I.e. if all the work is correct but not submitted vertically it is a ZERO! I have a test coming up but have no idea if the work I've previously done is correct because NOTHING has been graded. I implore you take another class!
A BIG no-no for people who care about their grade. Don't take her, especially in the intersessions. We have completed weeks of assignments (TOO MANY FOR A 1 UNIT CLASS) without a single grade... the semester is halfway over?!?! We continuously get assigned stuff with ZERO feedback. SUBMITTING THE LABS ARE RIDICULOUS. ALSO DOESN'T REPLY TO EMAILS.
What a joke of a course. Doesn't respond to emails in a course where it's so important. Little to no help on huge labs.
Before you take this professor, be prepared for these 3 things: 1. She barely responds to emails, or sometimes doesn't reply at all, even though she claims she will respond within two days. 2. Some assignments are only available after the due date—yes, you read that correctly. 3. Even with effort, some tasks are very difficult.
I would not recommend this class to anyone. She never answered any emails. Also assigns an insane amount of work for the intersession. She also opens assignments the day they are due and gives no time to complete them. You never know how you are doing in the class because she takes forever to grade, you don't know if you are doing things right.
Professor Walker makes geology fun and engaging. The hands-on labs and optional textbook make it a manageable workload. I found unstuckstudy really helpful for review and practice. Overall, a great class if you're willing to put in the effort.
lol don't. all needed to be said. Has an attitude and you don't know your grade til the end. You ask her about it she just tells you to calculate it. During labs she expects you to already know everything, so you're not learning. Basically impossible to pass the class idk how I did realistically.
I've noticed the worst professors have one thing in common and its communication which this professor lacks. NO COMUNICATION. Assignments due after the due date because material isn't available that week. Grades at the VERY end. Be warned the workload every week is heavy.
There is little to no leeway for assignments even when mostly completed. The class is extremely work heavy and the one time she offers help in person was finals week on a day a majority of people would already have a final, meaning you would have to miss the whole thing. The class acts like a late university class even though it's introductory.
First of all, she thinks we shouldn't use calculators because “your brain is your calculator.” Lmao. Doesn't respond to any emails. Made two different excuses separate times about what it was. The labs, based on a physical science, are somehow framed with vague questions. The material she gives for the “lecture”? Doesn't include anything useful.
You are required to take a field trip. Either take it with the class and meet at Mt sac at 6:45 am for a long day at the beach or go on your own. It's not accessible. If you are very busy or struggle with transportation access or even just physical mobility- take astronomy. You just go to a planetarium. One mile walk on your self guided field trip.
I just want to warn anyone considering taking her for oceanography online. She's awful. The tests are very ridiculous too. No notes for memorizing an obscene amount of information. Even in the field scientists have reference notes. WHY would anyone memorize the characteristics of 20 different types of rocks, not including ocean wave formulas?
