This was the worst teacher I have ever had... He was not approachable, and completely off his syllabus. We had no idea what we were being graded on. 1/2 the class reported him to administration
This was a great class. Mr. Markham is kind and understanding. Speeches in his class were fun, there wasn't the dread of having to speak in public, he never made anyone feel bad about their speeches. Take this professor if you need speech, he's the best!
Mr. Markham is not a hard professor. We only had 5 speeches to do for the entire semester. He is very soft spoken and doesn't make an effort to speak over anyone. It's your responsibility to listen and pay atttention. Attendance not mandatory, but with class one day a week, you lost if you miss. Overall, not a bad class...not hard at all
this teacher was absolutely ridiculous. they should have never hired such an insipid monotonous person as a speech professor. he was very vague whenever i tried to ask him how i was doing in his class, and he was completely unorganized. he actually lost my mid-term report. i tried to e-mail him about my grade in his class twice and got no response.
I would not say that this class is hard but he does not ive alot of time for some assignments such as going to watch an out of class speech. I would not go as far as to say not to take him but be prepared for short time periods.
This instructor is by far the worst I have ever had. He does not speak well, he's not clear with assignments, and has no control over the class. Students who want to learn have to shout to be heard over other disruptive students who are having their own conversations. I would recommend another professor for this course, which is mandatory.
I have taken classes from many professors. This professor is one of the best professors at DBCC- he is well informed, interesting, dynamic, and presents information that will be useful for life. Unfortunately we had some high school students in the class who don't understand what college is all about. He dealt with their immaturity very well.
This class offers great advice for speech and for life- fantastic teacher
A great class for students who want to learn about speech and communicating effectively. A poor class for dim bulbs looking for an easy A.
Super teacher- learned a lot. Some high school students were a little distraction- need to stay in high school-try college when they grow up.
This professor actually teaches the students useful information- a wonderful, challenging course.
Not a bad class. Prof M is very nice once you get to know his teaching style.
Nice guy. Overall enjoyed the class. Monotone voice. Wished he would just give us the assignments and let us go home. We would sit in class for almost the entire time in the evening which most of us are working parents and were dying to go home. A lot of group discussions which I enjoyed but could have done without.
If you get a bad grade in this class then you did not put forth ANY effort. Simple class if DBCC would keep the imature Dualers to themselves.. they are a distraction and COMPLAIN about EVERYTHING.
This guy has ZERO personality. Very monotone. Honestly, I don't think he's a very good speech instructor. The class is easy, but not very stimulating.
great teacher!!!!he is very helpful and if u talkin a speech class i say you choose him he's awesome!!!
Great teacher. I took the class in the summer and it went really quick. He was really easy and graded on completion with the assignments. If you attend the class and do the work, you'll get an A. Also an easy grader on the speeches. Had a lot of fun in his class. I recommend taking him for this class.
Riddle student here...easiest damn teacher i've ever had. You gotta go full retard to fail this guy's class. Yes he's boring and yes you have to sit through the whole period drooling on yourself, but you'll get an A.
Easy teacher. You literally have to Never come to class not to pass. Not very exciteable but hey an easy A or at least a B
BORING. He really enjoys and believes in the subject, but the class was really boring and unorganized. He often assigned homework or other assignments but then didn't actually pick them up from us. His instructions were often vague or unclear, making it sort of annoying to figure out how to please him. The class is an easy A, but it was irritating.
Took this class in the summer and it went fast. Great teacher, He made passing easy. You should pick him.
Awful class. No control, no time to do assignments, and not a cool guy. He gave terrible feedback on everyones speeches- usually had no feedback at all. He chooses favorites. Just because he's a "published" author on Amazon, doesn't mean he's the god of public speaking.
Stupid class he is very monotone for a speech teacher
I am literally DISGUSTED right now. Just found out I got a C even though I did all my work and EXTRA CREDIT. Hope he enjoys my email and if nothing is changed by this weekend, I'm walking right into administration. Don't take him, ever.
Very monotone. Every class was really boring and he could never control the class. Most people barely showed up. We never used the book. I'm sure he knows a lot about the subject, but he does not make it interesting in any way. He never checks the homework he gives.
This teacher is very mono tone and doesn't show a ton of excitement although the class is extremely easy as long as you attend and do the homework. If you plan on skipping, don't pick him for your teacher. Easy A if you go to class. Overall, he is a very nice fella and the class is fun! :)
Great professor. Easy class. Speech is a non-desirable class but he makes the class enjoyable. Relaxed, calm guy. Must take him!
Awesome professor. He is also very helpful with scholarships and job interviews.
I would like to echo that last comment. Great teacher. I learned a lot.
He needs to follow a real lesson plan.
Easy Class. He is very soft spoken, and class can be boring. He is very helpful, if you have any questions about your speech, and need ideas. He is also not very organized.Overall, he is a good Teacher.
The first couple of weeks he made us do team exercises which made us all very comfortable with each other. You will still get nervous but Markham makes it a stress free environment. Does not post any grades online, midterm+final assignments were very unclear (majority of our class had to resubmit) so make sure you ask him LOTS of questions
This class is SO awful. Everything is pointless and I dread going to this stupid class. I would drop it but it's required for my AA. If you can do ANYTHING to avoid him, do it.
He was not organized at all, Frequently missed days or changed around dates of your speech presentation and then you would get blamed when something was not due on time. In the beginning he told the class to speak about whatever they were interested in but he shot my ideas for speeches and others down saying it was unoriginal.
Worst teacher I've ever had, gives very very unclear directions(half the class didn't know what they were doing)It would be an easy class if he wasnt such a bad teacher because the work is moderately easy. Im going to dispute the C he gave me after I completed all but one 90%+ speeches/busy work. I would not recommend him to anyone.
He was very unorganized. Too softspoken. He gives extremely unclear instructions and penalizes you heavily for doing something even remotely incorrect. I got a B in the class, but he shouldn't be teaching any communication classes because his communication skills are terrible. Like I said, I got a fairly good grade but the class was terrible.
I do not know why others have had problems with him. I DO NOT like to talk in front of people but he made it very easy by setting up the class so that we all got to know each other very well, so when it was time for speeches it was very comfortable. Did not care for the midterm on connect though, would have rather had a speech :)
It was not that the class was hard AT ALL, but he was extremely hard to understand, each assignment he told us to do was extremely unclear and he did not help at all when asked. I missed an important deadline because I had trouble loading it on my computer and I emailed him, yet it took him four days to respond and he still blamed me. Very monotone
Terrible teacher. Doesn't explain any of the assignments clearly. We basically had to figure everything out on our own. All we did was busy work that half of the time didn't even relate to any of the speeches we were doing. Missed a major assignment due to the fact he didn't say the end date for it. Bottom line I will not take his class again.
Awesome teacher. I took this class over the summer and found it extremely easy. He is very passionate about the subject and will always help you to improve.
It was an easy class but the teacher was not clear on any of the assignments. I received all A on everything but I didn't know about an assignment that needed to be turned in. This dropped my grade from an A to a B. Plus I wasn't the only one in the class that didn't received that memo.
Really enjoyed the class. I was completely terrified and dreading speech but am so glad that I stuck it out. I learned a lot and feel more confident with my public speaking abilities now.
NOT CLEAR ON ASSIGNMENTS!!! GOOD LUCK WITH THIS ONE.
He's a super easy grader and we had a total of 4 speeches the whole semester, a few of them were even with a group. Take him if speaking in front of a class isn't your thing because he makes it as painless as possible.
His policies on tardiness and absences are tough. If you were absent 3 times, your grade automatically drops to a C. 6 absences and and you fail automatically. 2 lates equates to one absence. If you are even 1 minute late, he will mark you late with no remorse. Speech outlines are necessary, but he does offer makeup assignments usually.
This was an Easy class but the professor wasn't always very clear and at times the class was rather boring, it was not one of my favorite classes to take because of the professor.
This class was a little confusing. Its easy but confusing. Professor isnt clear on giving directions so you have to ask questions or email which what I did most the time. Attendance and on time to class is a must to pass. Hes an easy grader and overall its an easy class. I got a b because I was late to class 3 times
Id rather walk down a flight of stairs blindfolded than take his class again. good luck with the class. may the odds be eva in your favor.
Class is okay but you won't learn anything if you have speaking experience...I'll sum it up: Markham himself isn't worth much. When the substitute prof that we had when Mr. Markham was absent was more effective then him, find a better teacher. DSC's speech dept. doesn't publish prof names until planning week for fear of "judging" prof even, sad.
Avoid if you can but one thing, don't buy the MindTap thing until he says you're using it. He "required" it but we never ever used it, I didn't lose 100+ bucks for it but some of my classmates weren't so lucky. All of the "he's confusing" and "lots of busywork" comments are accurate, doesn't matter how well u speak only that u put up with him.
Effective if somewhat boring in lecture, but how interesting can a speech class really be? Outlines all the speeches and their relative grade weight in the syllabus, no surprises there. Easy grader, give some good feedback on speeches. Makes the experience as painless as possible.
Over-explains concepts, under-explains assignments. No one can read his feedback because of his handwriting. Be prepared to show up and take notes if you want a good grade. However, he's an easy grader, he keeps his classes interesting by making the class participate, and he usually lets you choose the topic for your speeches.
This class was awful. The assignments themselves were easy enough, but half the battle was just figuring out what to do for it. Instructions are never clear, and are often given too close to the due date. He's an extremely picky/ harsh grader with unachievable standards. He made the class atmosphere tense, judgmental, and discouraging. DON'T DO IT!
I honestly regret taking this class. The assignments are easy enough but only if you manage to figure out the directions! He can also be rude when he critiques so it makes the presentation atmospheres tense/uneasy. If you have ANY knowledge about public speaking AT ALL, you won't learn anything from this class. Creativity is also reprimanded!
Professor Markham made a tough class bearable. Most people are terrified of public speaking, but he has a good process for making everyone get to know one another before any of the pain starts. By the first speech you know the class a little, and that takes the sting out of it.
We had two speeches for the majority of the semester yet the last two weeks he assigned three speeches to the class. He is very monotone. Only allowed to miss two classes without being penalized. Do not write in pencil or he may count you absent because he has terrible eye site. Good luck. I would not take his class again.
Do not take any classes taught by this professor! Very unclear instructions and grading rubric. Even in a hybrid class, does not use the online dashboard properly. Scribbles notes on the board in the last 2 minutes of class and then assigns homework as students are leaving after class. Very forgetful, waits until the last minute to grade assignment
I was TERRIFIED to take this class because I have anxiety. But, this class is not as bad as it seems!!! You do exercises before each speech that makes you feel comfortable with the class and feel prepared. But, If you suffer from anxiety you may need to take this class online b/c of the scary 40 min debate! DON'T BUY THE BOOK, YOU DON'T NEED IT.
This professed does not seem to care much about my success, he lectures down rabbittrails. And gives little to no feedback. He doesn't grade to hard, but he explains his expectations very poorly.
Terrible teacher. His grading criteria is extremely unclear and he grades unfairly. If you think you are an A student, DO NOT TAKE HIM. I've never received a B in my life, but I did in his class. I repeat: do not take him. You would think that a teacher who teaches public speaking would be good at it but he has the most boring, monotone voice ever.
Worst instructor i have ever had in my life. His instructions are unclear and he has no idea on how to grade. For the final group project, make sure you have a topic that is not narrow or old, or else you will get behind trying to find a topic to suit HIS liking. If you have is class in the fall RUN! RUN to a different instructor other than him
Super easy grader, makes the public speaking part painless. My only complaint about him is that he is not always very clear about his assignment expectations. He's very nice and understanding. Most assignments are in groups so be ready for that. This class was a breeze once I figured out what he actually wanted us to do for the assignments.
I took this class and was sick for three classes. I emailed him and he told me I missed 6 classes when I have notes from class that day (when my attendance sheet says different). Cannot read handwriting on feedback for speeches. Very monotone voice & very confusing teacher.
My least favorite class so far. I see the value but its just a bunch of busy work. He is very nice but kind of disorganized and unclear. Everything could have been taught in two weeks.
Very unclear instructions. Speaks in monotone. Assigns homework, makes you print it, then doesn't even check it. After the final speech, the debate, he added a ton of assignments to the portfolio due the last day of class. He's nice but I wouldn't take the class again. He barely gives any feedback and makes you do a group project on the textbook,
As the previous review said, he is very unclear and monotone. Not like he isn't nice or anything, but for a public speaking prof, he doesn't talk much or communicate well. He's a harsh grader when it comes to speaking even though he knows we are all still working on becoming better speakers. That's why we're here. Take a different prof if you can..
There is a lot of research for this class. I took it in a mini term and got an A. If you put in the effort and ask questions you'll get an easy A. I liked his organization and assignment break down. I would absolutely take him again if I needed to. There is a lot of papers but, it's a communication class.
This was probably the hardest "elective" class that I have ever taken. Directions were not clear and it was hard to get clarification. Lots of unnecessary busy work. He initially gave me the wrong grade on one of my speeches. Overall, I just don't recommend Professor Markham unless you want to be stressed out all of the time. Take someone else.
nice guy, bad teacher. this class is a hot mess. easy A but watch your grades because he makes mistakes and then gives everyone the same grade anyway. he needs to retire. would not recommend but if you must take him then do yourself a favor and take it accelerated so it will be over fast.
Honestly one of the worst teachers I've had in an online class. never gives feedback so you don't know what to improve on. his due dates are a bit ridiculous, along with the discussion posts. definitely don't recommend it!!!!!!!!!!
This teacher does not seem to care about his students what's so ever, with unclear grading and horrible feedback you never really know what your doing wrong. He is extremely rude and seems to hate being asked questions about anything. Speeches were not difficult but again extremely unclear on what he wants to see from you.
He makes giving speeches in class really easy; there's lots of participation in class so you get to know your peers before. He is very caring and lenient with due dates given you have a good excuse, either way, he is understanding. Gives really good feedback and is a great help if you need help with a speech. His class was my favorite. Take him!
This professor was amazing. There was a paper due every week but it was very simple. As long as you do your work, show up to give the speech, and follow the rubric you'll be good. There were times he let me even submit my assignments through email. He did require a book, we only used the book for the quizzes (which were open book quizzes).
This guy... Not a terrible professor, but there's a lot he could improve on. He rarely, if ever responds to emails. I told him I would be out one day and he scheduled my speech for that day. He doesn't communicate well. The work is fine and manageable if you know the deadlines (which are insane) and criteria (which is unclear). Take someone else.
Mr. Markham was understanding and patient. This was the best class i have taken because it was challenging yet simple. Just show up for class and your speeches and you'll earn an A. I will say his responses through email are hard to get, i'd say it is best to talk to him after class or in person.
Worst teacher ever. Was never clear about assignments. Never told us when the quizzes were scheduled for and wouldn't let you make them up. Horrible about actually answering emails. Never mentioned any discussions until after they were due.
This class was amazing for me. Professor is extremely clear on his expectations. Attendance is the most important thing, he makes it clear if you plan on missing a class or two, you might as well drop the course. I had anxiety about taking it because I have stage fright but it really helped me open up and I actually made a few friends.
Whoever said this prof is amazing I know u lying this man is so unclear with his assigment and he write the outline on the board in sloppy handwriting and says u wont find any other information about this online go look up another prof and pick them HE DOSENT EVEN KNOW WHAT HIS ASSIGNMENT ARE ABOUT AND HAS A HARD TIME EXPLAINING IT HIMSELF
This professor does not teach the class and is rude when you miss one day. I told him I was going to miss a class and he told me it wasn't his fault I am taking a vacation in the middle of his course. Then proceeded to cancel multiple classes. Overall not good at teaching, communicating, or remembering when assignments are due. Do not recommend!
I do not recommend this professor unless it's absolutely necessary. He's never clear on his assignments, he will remove points for being absent, and in most classes we did nothing. My recommendation: go to his classes, sit through them, and do the best you can. It won't be fun. Please try to get a different professor or at least online.
Unexcused absence is 100pts per day, I`ve never missed. You will ask questions, he`s not clear most times! Due to RMP guidelines I cant explain my experience, but in a nutshell he forgets major things like to open assignments for example. He also doesn't honestly grade, he randomly does and has joked about it (laughed about "staircase" grading).
He was very unclear in instructions, never gives 100, speaks low and in monotone, and more. If you are told to come up with a topic for a speech, he ends up picking for you because what you pick is never good enough. His handwriting is very confusing. He doesn't give enough time for his speeches, especially if you have to do an interview.
Draconian attendance policy: if you miss one class you lose 100 out of 1000 points. Monotone and extremely uninteresting.
Would not recommend this professor. He talks in monotone and his hand writing is not the best. He did not give clear feedback on speech's and takes off points for missing a single class. Does not explain assignments well and overall just not very helpful. I would say do the 8 week course because 16 weeks felt very long and drawn out.
he was very monotune. opposite to what a speech professor should be, he never spoke clearly or used proper speech techniques. he is a very tough grader and im convinced he grades us randomly. course outline was very confusing and he never had a proper schedule for the assignment. i would never take any other course with him again.
Terrible class. Poorly structured, unclear directions, and harsh grading. Won't give a 100 no matter how hard you try. Very strict on vague guidelines and speaks in a monotone totally unengaging. For a communications class, he's a poor communicator. Learned nothing new. Waste of time, energy, and money. Take this course with a different professor.
This professor made a class I was already dreading even more dreadful. He spoke monotone, was rude and snappy to people if they asked questions he didn't like, wasn't clear with instructions, never gave good grades, always found ways to take points off of my speeches for the smallest things, cancelled three classes, i would absolutely not recommend
Unclear instructions, will not clarify either, it is impossible to get a 100, you need the textbook for quizzes even though he doesn't talk about it once. Boring, monotone, he looks unhappy dude. And it's like he wants his students to be unhappy too. Don't take Reed Markham. This class has potential, but his teaching is lacking.
Probably one of the worst professors you can take. Speaks in a monotone voice throughout the whole class, and when you give your speech, asks stupid questions based on the speech. Very hard to please with grading. Attendance is required, as he says he will give you an assignment to make up, but he does not grade it. I advise against his class.
I recommend this class for anybody who needs to take speech. Professor Markham was kind, easy-going, and very clear with the criteria. Be on top of your work, give your best, and you will receive a good grade. I took this class accelerated, and it was very easy to manage with two full-time courses. Would take again if I could!
I really wanted to give him benefit of the doubt but he is truly the worst professor I have ever had. Very harsh grader and the feedback he gives on speeches can be very confusing. He mumbles and never speaks clearly. He essentially makes you feel dumb the entire semester and doesn't do much to actually help you or make you a better public speaker.
by far the worst professor i have had. really tried to give the benefit of the doubt but i just couldn't anymore. extremely tough grader and very VERY confusing and unhelpful feedback. super monotone and doesn't do anything to help students. please take another professor.
Absolutely diabolical class. Instructions are seen as 'rewards' for attending. Clearer instructions are not available online until AFTER the project has begun and sometimes completed. No feedback. Extremely monotone and constantly went off topic. No announcements on ANY speeches prior to start date, some completely done in one class. Save yourself.
