Best teacher to have for my first year! The way she structured the class was great. She was always available to answer questions and answered them really well. Highly recommend.
Regan is an amazing professor. She loves to have participation, but does not force people to speak. The material she taught was relevant and interesting. I'd definitely choose her again if I had the option.
My favourite prof. She's the only person who has managed to make me interested in english. She's kind, intelligent, funny and she genuinely wants her students to succeed. Amazing feedback on papers, responds to emails almost immediately. Highly recommend. Will actively seek classes with Regan again.
Never. :(
Dr. Lipes is awesome. She is so caring and helpful. I enjoyed her class very much this semester. Shes a real gem. Take it for an English class you will NOT regret it!!!
A very perfect Instructor.
Love love love her class. She is the best! Best English prof ever
Dr. Lipes is the absolute best. She is smart, nice and funny. Her lectures are fun and engaging. Clear grading criteria and expectations. By far one of my favourites this term!
Regan always had good lectures. She knew how to keep ppls' attn. She was a fair marker. If you needed more time for something she was super accomodating and nice. She was really nice and helped make things make sense. If you did not understand your grade, she did a great job of clarifying things. Participating & showing up to class is important
She is an okay prof. I had troubles with her when it came to coming to class. She tells students she would wait five minutes after the class started to let people come in late to do attendance, but instead she does not do that and will do attendance right when it hits 8 am. She talks a lot of insight but does not really explain how and why.
I found Regan one of the best English educators that I have ever had in my whole academic career. She is very adament with attendance, as you get a participation mark for coming, but I did not mind it as I was going to my classes anyways. She is very clear in what she expects from you, and sets you up very well for what she does expect.
I am currently in her English 103 class and although she does explain the material well, she does not explain how she likes to have her papers written. She is a very tough marker for essays and will give you participation marks only if you talk in her class.
I was disappointed to find this prof different from the reviews I read here. She can be very kind during the lectures although can quickly turn into a triggered SJW if you displease her once. Be careful with this prof as they will bear a subtle grudge with you if you at any point disagree with her. Class is decent but the prof made it a worse.
She wasn't a hard marker for essay but she marked final really hard just go to class and you will get 100% participation marks, i never answered any question neither participated in discussion she gave me 100% for it but final was hard.
Regan is an absolute gem. She is one of the only profs that can made english bearable. Expectations were clear, gave easy marks for attendance and participation. Really helpful and kind during office hours. Overall a must take for intro english! If i were to take another english class I'd ONLY take it with her!
Regan is an excellent English teacher. She tries to make the class entertaining and engaging. Explains things really well. Would take again!
For her Comp lit 102 class she want to know your thoughts and that you are able to see connections between the material. I felt she was a very fair marker and is excited to hear your thoughts. I am not normally a good English student normally a b to b+, in her class I was about to excel.
Took the class with her last year. There was 3 books to read and a few poems. Only read The Kite Runner front to back and never read any of the other readings. EASY marker for essays, all 3 were in the 90s (and i suck at English), if you use a point-proof-argument style in paragraphs. Everything she says in class will be on the final. Everything.
Overall, Dr. Lipes was just okay. The online portion of the class was not helpful at all; there were discussion questions on the powerpoints, but no explanation. You basically had to fend for yourself in this class. 3 weeks before the final exam we only had 1 assignment marked that was worth 10%, so it was very hard to tell where you were at.
I had her for my online class, and she did not give us any supports. Her assignments' instructions are not detailed, thorough at all. Everyone felt confused in her class, and her marking is strict despite all of her careless instructions. Please rethink before choosing her class!
This is my second course with Dr. Lipes and overall I would say she is a good choice for comparative lit! There is a lot of reading but assignments are extremely simple with the longest paper requiring only 750 words. Lectures are important to attend if you want to do well on the final exam worth 30%.
she's very unorganized, slow to help. Her lectures are very unclear and she is unable to form proper sentences when teaching. She is a tough marker who gives minimal feedback.
Lipes was not a good instructor in any way during this spring semester. She screamed into the microphone for the lectures and also does not know how to articulate her thoughts whatsoever. Her communication was terrible and half the time I did not know when the discussion posts were due. She is also a hard marker and gives rude/unhelpful feedback.
From day 1 she rated my content very hard, I got 0s. and no helpful feedback. Her rubrics are so broad with zero detail. I asked her afterwards how can i get a passing grade because of her very strict marking, she did not reply. I told her I was frustrated because I feel like Im thrown in with the wolves and need guidance, she was only offended.
Very unclear grading criteria and extremely vague assignments. I'm a decent academic writer and found this class confusing. The prompt for assignments is very short and basically doesn't tell you anything about the assignment. Would not recommend if you struggle with unclear instructions.
Overall, I found that she could not articulate any thoughts whatsoever. She constantly read from the PowerPoint without elaborating on anything and essentially used student's discussion posts to teach the course for her. As well, she did not upload the PowerPoints to Blackboard once we returned in-person, which made in-person absolutely mandatory.
Good teacher. Likes to hold classroom discussions about the content.
Professor Lipes is a sweetheart. She ALWAYS has a smile on her face and leads great class discussions during lectures. For future students, note that she's blind and won't always notice your hand raised in the air if its not raised high enough. She'll also require you to hand in hard copies of all assignments (no online submissions) in large font.
Class is absolutely mandatory for a good grade. Her essay questions can be difficult for a 100-level course. Not to mention her PowerPoint do not include a ton of information, so if your classmates don't answer the question, you are sol. Not to mention, she lets students go on religious rants that should be saved for therapy sessions, not class.
Regan was the absoloute worst professor I had in my entire time at macewan. In Pre covid times, I was extremely sick ( with strep throat) and she proceeded to tell me I could not submit my final paper over email and could only come in person to hand it in. I ended up appealing the course, and ended with a B plus :)
Regan was a great professor. Her lectures were clear and applicable to what we were learning. She always gave prompt feedback on my essay and encouraged me throughout the process. The only downside was a group assignment. I would have preferred to do it on my own. She is legally blind so follow her requirements for font size and spacing.
Her policy for accepting late work is entirely hypocritical. Nothing is accepted unless printed and handed in before class and that's it, no exceptions. But she will hand things back weeks late and not post grades so you can at least see them. If you intend on having a life outside of English 103, I would not recommend taking her class.
She has a strict attendance policy, but her lectures are extremely dry, and it is very hard to focus. You are reading lots of novels on your own time and are expected to keep up and finish them on time.
As soon as she sent out her introduction email, I knew I was in trouble. Her lectures are extremely boring, dry, and hard to make yourself go to, but her attendance policy is harsh. Passing is very dependent on you. Get ready to read lots of novels and have to write essays on them, where she grades hard but doesn't give good rubrics to follow.
Lots of readings and writing in her class, but she is an easy marker. Attendance is mandatory.
Dr. Lipes is a good English professor and an easy grader. There were many assigned readings compared to other professors, however. I got an A+ in her class and had never got this grade in an English class before.
Dr. Lipes is funny, caring and super enthusiastic about English. Her lectures are easy to follow and she covers everything you need to know for her papers and exam. If you show up to class, pay attention and ask for clarification on papers, you are guaranteed a good grade. She is a very fair market and goes out of her way for students.
Super easy marker. Mandatory attendance which is an L. Group projects were also kind of hard to finish in time I found, but she literally throws A's like there's no tomorrow. Slay.
Dr. Lipes is the most passionate engl prof I have ever met. I have a classics background so this class was a breeze. She is very specific with her lectures which help immensely for the essays. Essays are 1200 words. She will go out of her way to make sure students are succeeding, she makes a point to remember your name which many profs don't do.
Dr. Lipes was a hard marker, be prepared to write 1200-1500 word papers (citations not included in word count). If you didn't show up to her class, she did not post anything online so make friends to get notes if you can! She is passionate about what she teaches but can be harsh at times.
I haven't finished the course yet but so far it is going really well. She is a fair marker, expectations are laid out in the assignment guidelines and in the course outline. Her lectures contain a lot of information, so going to class is a MUST. The lectures are interesting and the group projects are fun. Dr. Lipes really cares about her students.
Regan is one of the best humanities professors I have ever had. She is passionate about comparative literature and always has a smile on her face. I enjoyed taking this class with her. I would highly recommend taking classes with her.
made a 100 level course feel like a 400 level, very tough marker, and difficult person to deal with. She got offended and upset when I asked her questions via email. She's very passionate about what she teaches, I'll give her that, but comes off very harsh. I would not recommend this prof to anyone.
I actually really enjoyed comparative literature with Regan. She is very kind and approachable. She cares a lot about her students and is passionate about the lecture content. I would recommend everyone to take the course with her if they can!
I've taken COMP102 with her twice now and have had to drop right before the final (BOTH TIMES) or I would have failed. Good luck if you miss a class because she doesn't post anything online. No powerpoints, no notes, NO GRADES. Also if you miss her class she will fail you and have a personal vendetta towards you. Lectures very dry. AVOID THIS PROF
very caring and gives great feedback!
Regan was a very good instructor. She was always bubbly, kind and patient with our class. I do not like english but she made it interesting and engaging. She is also always available on campus for questions and feedback. Overall a very good lecturer and professor.
Dr. Lipes is probably one of the nicest profs I've ever had, but she is a tough grader. We're expected to read around 5-6 books throughout the semester which is impossible while balancing other classes. she's very passionate about English and makes class fun, I found myself struggling more than I anticipated, but she is always open to meeting up.
She is too sweet, cares for her students and an easy grader. Definitely recommend her for English 102.
She is a tough grader, lots of reading for English 103 but she cares for her students and tries to help as much as she can. She will tell you what to except on the final exam (all written).
Dr Lipes was one of the most engaging professors I ever had. Lectures are fun, thought provoking and definitely deal with topics out of the ordinary. On a cautionary note, this is not a freebie class. Be prepared to read A LOT and come to class. Overall, highly recommend!
This was a really class but I gained a lot from it. These were readings i wouldn't have picked myself but I actually liked them a lot. The teacher knows her stuff and she was happy ti give me help with what I didn't get in class. I sent her drafts of my essays while I was working so I was supported. I would take her again definitely.
Regan let me borrow all of the books I needed for the semester because I wasn't able to buy all of them. I appreciated that a lot. She also gave me help while I was writing my papers, so I felt like I turned in good work. The readings were unconventional, but that's the point I guess. She cared about how I did in the class, and I felt respected
Dr. Lipes was extremely helpful and very kind. Would take any class with her again.
This was a great class, and it made me wish I'd taken the first semester with her too. It was a time consuming workload, but worth it.
I took this class because I had to for my program, but it was great. The assignments were very different and I had fun with them. The lectures were heavy on info, but she covers everything you need to know. Regan was very supportive when I asked for help. She expects a lot but is fair.
I really enjoyed Regan's lectures. She is kind, helpful and caring. I am looking forward to taking more classes with her! I wish she taught upper level classes.
Amazing is an understanding to describe her. She is inspiring, motivational and actually cares about her students. She is genuinely the best professor MacEwan has.
She is really nice and is easy to talk to. I liked her class because if wasn't the same old thing. The readings were all new to me, and I found them interesting. This was a class I wanted to go to.
I do not like her, she only cares about certain students
I'm in this class right now. She makes us read The Hebrew Bible and The Quran. This is really challenging, but it's teaching me a lot, and I appreciate learning this. She does it in an easy to understand and respectful way.
If i could give 0 stars i would. She is the worst prof i've ever had. The hardest grader ever. Always needs size 18 font double spaced NOTHING can be online. Will crash out when you don't follow her directions and won't accept any reason, made me hate english.
Made us read the Qur'an, Bible, and more complex texts. I Needed to actually read the texts to do my essay or group project (dw, it's easy) since her lectures covered the readings nicely. Her assignments are less about writing and more about using creativity to show understanding/perspective. Criteria is broad, as she wants your interpretation.
She really connected everything we did to what goes on outside of school. The guest speakers were helpful, and I liked getting advice from MacEwan grads. She is really helpful, but you need to ask.
Fantastic class, cool topics, fun activities. I wish I could take 103 with her too. Best lit prof at Mac by far.
Attend every class and read the texts given by her after every class, and the result will be reflected in your grades. Always visit her during office hours and discuss your ideas with her about your essay, and she will help you out in every possible way to succeed in this course. She is a wonderful prof but strict about the deadlines of the assin..
Regan is a very upbeat, enthusiastic professor. Her assignments are easy to complete if you just show up to class and follow the rubric. She is very understanding and accommodating, you just have to approach her ahead of deadlines.
Professor Lipes is my absolute favorite professor I've ever had! She's very interactive and engaging. I love her readings and the discussions that come from them. Professor Lipes is incredibly supportive and creates a very safe environment. I would absolutely take another one of her classes
Lots of material, but if you go to class and do the work, you will do well. I liked that she connected the material to the outside world and to all the ways studying English is helpful in our careers. Would definitely take another class with her.
Passionate and inspiring, I looked forward to class every day. Assignments are thought out and well done.
If you are not a strong reader DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. There are five novels she will have you read, and she gives zero timeline as to when you are supposed to have them read. Be prepared to show up to class unprepared due to a lack of communication. She does not use the syllabus for the timeline of assignments. Strict marker in a messy class.
Prof Lipes is super passionate about what she teaches, which makes for a great instructor. However, I was really disappointed to see multiple of my emails being unanswered for a few business days, and multiple classes cancelled last minute. My biggest issue was that all assignment grades are not uploaded to Meskanas which is extremely frustrating.
Regan is a very kind, and engaging instructor. She truly wants her students to succeed and do well in the course. Fair marker, the assignments are broad and can be hard to get started. If you go to her office hours, she'll explain it very well. She's also very upbeat and cheerful. I'd take her again and will take upper level classes with her!
The topic of this class was challenging, but I wanted to go to class. She knows a lot about the Holocaust, and I felt like I learned so much. I thought this might be a depressing class, but it ended up being my favorite because it had substance. This is a unique course.
Take this course with Lipes! Best prof at Mac, and I'm not into English!
She was really helpful and patient. I felt very respected by her.
This was the most intense class of my semester but it was worth the workload. I felt this this was a topic that really meant something and had a purpose. I would like to try taking other courses with Regan because I'd get a lot out of the experience I know.
This was a difficult class, but fair. She let me borrow her books because I had some cash probs, no judgement. I liked the extra credit assignment. The class was very professional and put together well because she knows the subject. I would have liked the essays to be marked easier because I'm in first year.
G-O-A-T! Loved this course and the prof. I would recommend her. She takes the time to get to know her students, and is so friendly. She was accommodating of me and listened. I felt like she wants me to succeed. I hope I can take other classes with her. The readers were way different than what you'd expect.
She's really organized, and I liked that she communicated clearly what was expected. The extra credit meant that even though the class was very difficult, I got a great mark.
I was stunned that I was able to take this intense of a course as a first year. I thought this sort of class would only be open to advanced students, and it was such an incredible challenge. I was grateful for the challenge because it made me think more deeply. The Holocaust is a hard topic, but I feel like I understand things better.
Im in this class now and it's great. The lectures are so energetic that I kinda have to pay attention, but it's interesting.
She's super passionate about the course material and makes lectures interesting! Taking a 6 week condensed course, lecture-heavy but enjoyable so far! She makes Comp fun... I didn't think that was possible! Highly recommend.
Great class, cool discussions, lots to think about. This was a great experience after a hard winter semester. I'm gonna look out for more of her classes.
I think I could've done better if I didn't take three classes in one condensed term, but I wish I'd put more time into this one because she's awesome. I went and talked to her when I had questions, and she was respectful and patient. There is a lot of energy here, and my advice is to go ready to have fun.
I got my grade yesterday, and I'm happy. This was a lot of work, but it obviously paid off in the end. She is really nice and friendly. She doesn't mark on attendance, but you're gonna tank if you don't go. He assignments are kinda off the wall, but so cool! I just switched into her 103 for the fall, but I'm on the waitlist so I hope I get in.
This was an incredible class, and I highly recommend Regan over others… I tried taking this class with a different teacher before. I'm already signed up for 103 with her, and I couldn't be more excited! Don't get me wrong, she's incredible but she'll work you hard!
Kindest prof you could ever have, loves when you see her in her offices hours. Gives fantastic feedback that makes you feel like she wants you to succeed, lots of reading in the course but the books are ones she loves and thinks students will enjoy. Show up to class and enjoy it and you will do well.
Donnot take this class if you are unable to finish a novel a week. I was reading for this class in every spare moment I had. 6 novels ranging from 400-800 pages long (and yes, we were required to read everything). And if you think you can get away with just using SparkNotes, you are wrong. Weekly participation activities are specific and worth 25%.
Lots of reading and writing for a first year course. Does not enter grades online. She's very passionate. December 5th, and I have only received a grade for 2/13 assignments I've completed for her this term (prior to writing the final). Requires hard copies (printouts) of your assignments, no online submissions.
If you gotta take an 8am, she's the one to do it with. I'm in sciences, but this was pretty interesting. Not sure about my grade, but also not worried. If you go to class you can get a good mark without breaking a sweat.
Participation was 25% which is absolute insanity, get real please. It's literally worth more than the final exam?? All assignments (weekly discussion & essays) need to be printed out and she takes a very long time to mark them. A lot of required LONG readings. She's the kind of prof who thinks their class is the only one you're taking.
We are required to read up to 6 books and finish them almost every week. Her lectures can be unorganized and gets sidetracked, talking about personal things that are not supposed to be in lectures as they're not appropriate for academic setting. She had to pause lectures here and there cause there are a lot of people falling behind.
You'll work hard, but it's worth it! She gives lots of feedback and is always supportive. Everything is really organized, and if you pay attention there's nothing to be stressed about.
The readings are substantial, but not worth complaining about… it's university. She gives extra credit opportunities, and even will read your work before you turn it in so you can get feedback. She's great!
I didn't keep up with the readings, but I did most of them and still managed. She really goes through essay writing step by step which was helpful. For a required class this was great. She sets the class up that if you do the work you'll get good marks.
It was hybrid so I got why there needed to be weekly writing assignments, which were a lot of work, but kept me on track. I don't know what people are complaining about. We read some poems, excerpts from a novel, a few stories, and a graphic book. We only read two novels completely. I loved the readings because they were unique!
When EPSB striked she was the only prof I had that recorded her lectures from the day for those of us at home with kids. I dropped other classes because of the strike, but this one was fine because of the extra recordings she made for us.
Tough class, but got lots out of it! I have her next semester, so I'm looking forward to that.
I got my grade on Friday and I was very happy because this class was a lot of work.
OK, it wasn't difficult, but it was hard because there were lots of little projects and smaller assignments. That also meant that one bad grade didn't tank me, obviously. I recommend asking questions because she's patient.
A good intro to my first unit experience. I'd take her again.
I worked hard and learned a lot! Don't take this class if you wanna slack off. Work l, and you're gonna do well. Donttexoe t something for nothing.
