Very interactive
Great for people new to chemistry.
Dr. Frey was an excellent teacher. There are not many professors that are willing to meet with students individually, especially when there are so many kids in the class. I would definitely recommend her. She is great if you are new to chemistry.
Frey is the best. I have never had a techer as helpful as her in all of college and i'm sure I never will again. If you have a choice at all take Chem with Frey. She will make it easier to learn and she cares if you learn!!!
best chem prof at WU
By far the best professor in terms of teaching ability. Huge difference from those who put research first and teaching is secondary. We need more profs like Frey at Wash U!
If you want to ace Chem, then she's good, because she teaches to the test. If you want to deeply *understand* chemistry, she's not so hot. It may be tempting to take the easy road, but it *will* come back to haunt you in orgo (if you're premed)
Enjoy her while you've got her, folks...next semester you get ZORG.
She literally saved my A$$ in chem. I was below the mean until her, I couldn't have gotten my B+ without her wonderful help sessions. She's a bit brash and direct to students at times...even downright snappy, but she helped out so I don't worry about that
the tests are really hard, the curves are kinda hard, don't take the class unless its required, but shes a good teacher
she is one of the finest professors at wash u! She really knows how to teach, and she's not easy, either. I remember most of the material from her class, and she made even dry stuff seem alive. Go Episcopals!
If teaching means repeating the book wordd by wword then she's good.. as far as I am concerned she was unhelpful, full of herself and boring
she's beyond amazing
I found that she wasn't so helpful when I went to see her. She seemed more interested in bashing my apparently lacking study skills than suggest helpful changes. She also teaches to the test, which wasn't so helpful in Orgo because I had to re-learn material on my own. Bah.
AAAAAAAAAA!! Talk about a weed out class.. this class seriously made me develop a panic disorder. Ridiculously hard.. She is a nice teacher but they purposely make this class hard as hell so that people get out of pre-med. DON'T TAKE IT!!!!
If you are good at the art of sucking up this is your prof. Otherwise you'll see her as the mediocre prof she is. All she does is teach Chem111, no research. Awfully boring, tries to weed out pre-meds. I got an A in the course but never went to calss b/c all she does is repeat the book. Snobby+dull
super
Amazing!!! So helpful even though its a really hard class...go talk to her if you are hating the class..that really helps:)
Does an amazing job of explaining topics
Yes, the class is hard, the teacher has nothing to do with that. This course is meant to show all the pre-meds that they aren't all that anymore when it comes to college. But, Frey is an EXCELLENT teacher, very organized and clear. If you have to take this class, take it from Frey.
omg... this class blows my mind. frey is superb though. she does a good job of presenting her notes so it all flows and is interrelated and she has LOADS OF patience to answer questions and explain things again.
Frey did an awesome job of explaining the material. She did a help session before every exam that helped soooo much. She made extra problems for us to work and she explained all of the material clearly. My roommate skipped her chem 111 lectures to come to Frey's lectures because Frey is so good.
Awesome teacher, hard course.
so good
Professor Frey is incredibly organized and very easy to understand. Overall, she's a great professor.
Frey wasn't my actual prof. but I would skip my lecture to come to hers. She's a great teacher and really tries to explain the material. Of course, the class is still mind-numbingly hard, but she tries to keep you from failing.
very hard course, but she breaks it down and does her best to help you succeed. she really isnt out there to fail you; very personable. i heart her!
Awesome teacher, probably the most organized you'll ever have. I recommend the front row!
Frey is cool, but Loomis was better, glad i went to loomis' lectures.
Never learned more than middle school chemistry before, but prof. made it semi-understandable for beginners. A well organized class.
This class is HARD but Frey takes it upon herself to teach in an efficient and organized way. Although she can be very intimidating and sometimes quite outspoken (to the point of rude), her intentions are good. She wants to see her students do well... and if that's not possible, at least to pass.
Awful class. Not too hard... must study a lot. Tests are pretty hard and curved on a bell curve. Final was impossible... But the lectures were good, information presented well.
She is the most intimidating teacher I've ever met. Speaking with her actually makes your knees shake because she is so condescending and critical of the students. I hated this class because no matter how hard you study you are unprepared.
She is one sassy lady. Condescending but a good teacher. Does make you feel stupid.
She's a great profesor and tries to make the material interesting. It is obvious that she loves teaching and chemistry. The tests are brutal but she does a great job explaining concepts.
Her lectures are well organized, but she has no time for the average student. Become one of her pets and you will be o.k. As for her tests, get off of the alternate universe thing...we don't get it, the TAs don't get it, and the other professors don't get it.
Great teacher, lectures are very clear and she will take the time to explain things, but the tests are excrutiating. This is definately a weed out class.
Dr. Frey was seriously amazing. This chemistry class is definitely the hardest class I've ever taken in my, life, but Dr. Frey's help got me through it. I warn though, don't take this class unless you really want to; it's painfully difficult, and will make you miserable if you don't love chemistry.

Good lecturer. Take her section if you have to take chem
Dr. Frey is a fine teacher, but not spectacular. I've gone to both her lectures and Buhro's, and now only go to Buhro simply because he explains it a lot better. Somehow Frey is slower, doesn't get through all the notes she is supposed to, but still doesn't explain things as well. Plus, she's very high strung and Buhro's a bit more relaxed
If you just look at Frey's lecture on the surface, you will find her responsible and knowledgeable. But what you get is an illusion. For some reason, she has trouble explaining difficult concepts. She does teach in a more lively manner than Buhro. But most of times their lectures just fall flat. Maybe it is time we get a new professor.
This is a **** and a terrible professor. She has no concept of critical thinking, and as thus the Premeds Idolize her. Her approaches to the material are often incorrect and she clearly does not understand the material sufficiently to explain it. Thank God I am in Engineering!
Dont know why all the bad ratings. She is usually willing to help and always has help sessions. Buhro is probably a better lecturer though.
Dumb Premeds!
Frey seems to be a very polarizing figure, but personally I loved her class, and I don't even like chemistry very much and struggled just to pass. She is an excellent lecturer and makes concepts very clear. Her office hours are also very helpful.
I personally thought she was a very good professor. Sure lectures were sometimes boring, but I thought she was good at explaining topics. Her office hours were extremely helpful, and I think they were the reason I did well in the class.
Really great about answering questions. Cares that the students actually understand. Encourages participation even in large lectures.
Good professor for lecturing, I had no trouble understanding. However, the class is hard due to the harsh curve + hard exams. Really tests for understanding. Challenging but rewarding class.
Extremely rude and arrogant. As others have said, she has a huge chip on her should about pre-meds... she must not have gotten in. This class is not designed for people to show mastery of the material. Tests are ridiculous, but much easier if you came from a good math/science high school.
A good teacher overall, extremely hard class though. She also has a duality in her character that half the time is perceived as a maternal/caring figure and the other half the time can be a little condescending. Good, but hard class, don't take it unless you have to
Frey's entertaining and very into teaching chemistry. Her class is fairly difficult--this is not the chem you took in AP. This class teaches you the theory behind it all. She is very available and will help you if you ask.
111 is an IQ test. It focuses so much on thinking "out-of-the box" that students who don't have a lot of natural talent will get burned regardless of dilligence. Don't feel bad if you can't make the grade - the other classes in the premed sequence are easier.
Chem 111 could be an IQ test; but you need to work even if you're smart! (So many details) Any way, Frey is as close as you can get to a high school teacher for Gen-chem. She movies slowly and explains a lot.
I agree, Dr. Frey is just like a high school teacher...she only covers those components that she will test on. If you really want to learn the material, however, go to Loomis' lecture. (They encourage you to go to either lecture, and they give common exams.) Go to her reviews, she will give you exact problems that will be on the exam.
Professor Frey is absolutely amazing! She does an excellent job of teaching the material and makes sure all of her students understand the material before moving on. Best professor I had thus far! I highly recommend listening to her lectures. She is nothing but helpful.
Frey is amazing! She is energetic during the lectures&keeps the class engaged & participatory-quite the feat w/ such a large lecture. She is always willing to take Q's during lecture or stay after. She formats her notes organizationally&simplifies the learning process. Some disliked her notes, as it took her time to write them, but it helped many!
Frey is a clear lecturer, and she makes it pretty obvious want she wants you to know for the exams. She sometimes has a hard time giving alternative explanations of concepts. Overall, don't be afraid of Chem 111 since they no longer curve. They use a straight point system.
Professor Frey is a great professor who explains difficult concepts in an exceptionally clear way. Exams were very tricky, but as a whole, the class was not as difficult as I had expected based on what I had heard from other students/faculty.
One of the best teachers I've had. I had heard a lot of talk about how this course is the worst but she made it interesting and understandable. Strongly suggest taking her section, Lumus guest lectures did not compare and left some scratching their heads.
Frey is very clear, and spells out everything you need to know. I wish she would have pushed us a bit more in terms of applying the concepts. Overall, not bad though. It is a bit annoying that students talk throughout lecture.
Of the three gen chem teachers, she is the best. She teaches everything you need to know on the test in a clear and understandable manner and will answer your questions well.
She will tell you exactly what will be on the exams. Lectures are a bit boring though. She has a tough to e explaining several topics. I went to other's help sessions to get better explanations. Overall she's ok, and you can get a good grade, even if you don't understand the material.
Although this is a very difficult class, professor Frey is an excellent teacher. She is usually very clear and always concise. Her lectures are always the fullest, because many students enrolled in the other sections prefer Frey's teaching style.
Dr. Frey is always very energetic during her lectures, especially when she hops around and pretends to be an electron. I love it. She moves at a fast enough pace that the lectures don't get boring, but slowly enough to allow students time to process and understand what she is teaching.
Professor Frey is a very good lecturer. She explains hard topics well and is approachable for questions after class. She also writes down almost everything she says which makes it much easier to take thorough notes. Her help sessions are not my favorite, but I do recommend her lecture.
Her lectures are fine, a bit dry and I wish she would not just read from her notes. She struggles with explaining things beyond what she has presented. They preach that the exams will push you, but I didn't see it. Just memorize the problems from POGIL or PLTL and you will do fine.
I don't understand the praise for Frey. She is ok, at best. After the first class, I started going to Buhro's section-wow, he's much better. They are absolutely opposites. She seems to care only about test scores, and not how the students are learning the material. She is also not patient with questions and way too rushed.
Super enthusiastic! makes gen chem interesting. not boring like other professors who teach the same course. if you have the option, take it with her. she is also super nice and approachable.
Amazing professor that makes lectures interesting. Dr. Frey is highly energetic, once pretending to be an electron by running around the lecture hall. Cares highly about her students. Make sure to understand the material and do the problem sets. This is not a memorization- heavy class. Utilize all resources: RPM, POGIL, PLTL, office hours
She is pretty organized, but it seems like she is reading a script when she lectures. Her fake enthusiasm is annoying and condescending. My father came to one of the lectures and left disgusted by her antics. What is with the candy? We are not 5 yrs old.
An incredibly sweet professor who genuinely cares about students' academics and their personal wellbeing. Her explanations are SO helpful and she breaks down the material so that you understand it very intuitively. Gives out candy during help sessions!
Frey is very awkward. She reads from her notes in a cold tone. It is not clear she understands everything she is saying. She does not answer questions well. Then she insists we work together on simple clicker questions. I strongly recommend you take someone else for Gen Chem. Overall the course is good, but she is not.
Professor Frey had supported my friend and me through very tough times. She was very caring and I very much enjoyed her class. I am very happy to have taken my first chemistry class with Professor Frey. In a sense, she helped me grow a healthy mindset towards college. I couldn't thank her enough.
Frey is the worst of the Chem professors. She just plowed through the material, and she seemed to no care if we learned anything. Daschbach was much better. Frey was also useless at help session unless you asked a question about a specific hw problem, and even then she would just read the key, which we already have. Really frustrating semester.
She managed to explain difficult chemistry concepts in a clear manner and seemed to really care about her students. I credit her help sessions to getting an A in chem 112 because Sobotka's teaching was so bad.
