She is a great lecturer and makes things interesting BUT you have to pay close attention during the lecture and write everything down and read the textbook thoroughly which is the worst part. The textbook is terribly boring and long but lectures are interesting. The tests are kind of weird. Just work hard and study and you'll probably be alright.
Love prof Ybarra, she has great lectures that are super interesting and easy to follow. The class is super easy if you show up, pay attention, and take notes- there will be a lot of notes!!! her tests come from the lecture notes and the book, but not everyone uses/has the book. She's a great teacher and i really enjoy her class!!
I took Professor Ybarra for PSY 2301. Boy! She is a great professor. The way she teaches forces you to participate in class. I loved her teaching methods and personality. Inspired me a ton to change a lot my major. If you write down everything from the powerpoint and just roll your eyes over it, you will get a easy A!
Professor Ybarra actually cares for her students and goes above and beyond to teach them.
I would take her class again. She is definitely nice and understanding. That being said, she is not organized nor clear with her rules. Our class struggled with our final paper due to not knowing what she wanted. At the end, most of us did make decent grades. Study and read the text! Take really good notes in class to do well on her tests!
This was the worst class i've taken. She was so unclear in what she wanted and gave different members of the same group different instructions. When I would ask her a question, she wouldn't actually answer it, instead told me what's wrong with my question. She's so frustrating and everything I learned was pretty much self taught.
Professor Ybarra inspired me to become a psychology major. This class was so interesting and she is so fun in class. I looked forward to the lectures every week. I also loved that the class used a free textbook. That definitely helped and just shows that she cares about students
Great professor! Had to read a lot for class and study, but really enjoyed coming to class. She made difficult material easily understandable and made me think.
The textbook is not mandatory and she never talks about the textbook, but she will surprise you with odd forgettable material from the book. lThere are 4 exams and the last one is counted as the final. For a NEEDED class in psych she or her student teacher doesnt offer many options to do better in the class. shes nice tho-what u want in a therapist
Professor Ybarra was a fair professor. In Exp projects there are short papers you have to write that will be combined into one APA research paper. Professor Ybarra was helpful outside of class and her feedback was clear.
I LOVED her!! She was an amazing professor and made lectures hella fun. That being said attendance is mandatory because she doesn't post the lectures online and participation is 10% of the grade, the tests are hard and are a mixture of lecture and textbooks, extra credit was available(super easy), be ready to read and take great notes!
She does a really good job of getting the concepts through to you; the class itself is interesting so you learn during lectures. You can get an A if you read the textbook and do reading assignments on time. Sometimes the readings feel tedious & heavy, but she gives drop grades for assignments and extra credit! She really does help out students.
Dr. Ybarra is an amazing professor! If you have a chance to take her please do. I was initially very skeptical based on her reviews but I honestly enjoyed going to each of her lectures. Theres a lot of extra credit opportunities and the tests are pretty straight forward. One thing I will say is that theres a lot of monitored reading online. Easy A
Who doesn't love abnormal psych?! Dr. Ybarra is intelligent, knows what she is talking about, and lectures in a way that keeps you interested. Her background as a psychologist makes for some interesting anecdotes. Seriously, just do the work and you'll pass. Many extra credit opportunities. Take them! I enjoyed listening to her lectures. A+ teacher
Dr. Ybarra is great, I enjoyed her class and I learned alot.
Ybarra is the sweetest, most understanding prof! Every week, there is textbook reading (Perusall), applied applications, and RSVPs (summary of what you learned that week) due. It is really easy to make an A on all of these. The tests are open-note and open-book. She truly wants you to do well in the class and cares about her student's well-being.
THE Sweetest prof! Truly cares about her students, extended the deadline for one our exams due to election stress and gave us the option for a final to replace lowest grade. Exams are open note/open book. Every week there are Perusall, RSVP and applied reflection assignments which takes a few hours each week. If you put in the work, its an easy A
This professor cares about the mental wellbeing of her students. She understands that we are in a global pandemic and she lessens the work load which I think is incredibly helpful.
I have yet to meet a professor that is as caring as her. It seems like a lot of work at first, but after a couple of classes, you will realize how easy it is to get a good grade. Weekly assignments and 4 exams (multiple choice). Weekly assignments are: annotating the book, an easy reflection and a summary assignment. Ex. credit is also given.
If you have the chance, definitely take Professor Ybarra's class. She is actually amazing and it is clear she cares for her students, especially during a time of adjustment. Has very clear guidelines on how to earn credit and lectures are considerably interesting. Overall a really understanding professor and even better class. Exams are easy too.
I really enjoyed lectures; Ybarra had good stories to tell. The lowest 2 grades of each assignment were dropped. There was more work, but expected for a 4000 lvl class. Extra credit was available from the start of the term. The textbook was good, and the assignments were engaging. The 4 exams + one final were open note / open book. Favorite class.
Great prof! The class was super easy to do well in especially if you listened to the lectures and did the homework. There was a lot of busywork, but the exams were fair. Also, there were Extra Credit opportunities.
SHE IS AMAZING!! I took her online class, it was easy. You have reading assignments, applied assignments, and quizzes every week. She is very caring and wants you to succeed in the class, you have PLENTY of extra credit opportunities!! Take her she is DA best.
Reading and quiz for every chapter. Assignment for every chapter. 1 Chapter per week. Quizzes are on lectures and reading. Open book quizzes. Information is very interesting, keeps students engaged.
If you procrastinate, yes this class is a lot. If you manage your time wisely then this class is worth it while also being very interesting. Her lectures and the reading can be very long, but she makes it very clear what she expects from you and gives you plenty of time. I took the online class-all the quizzes were online and we didn't have a final
Her lectures are incredible and engaging. You will learn a lot from this class. Yes, this class is a lot of work in that you have pretty long reading assignments w online annotations and a quiz due every week, but its 100% doable if you manage your time well. Final was easy as long as you studied well.
The class consists of a lot of weekly work, so make sure to stay on top of it. Outside of that, the material was really interesting and Dr. Ybarra's lectures helped with understanding the material. Exams usually have you giving a diagnosis to different scenarios, but there are small details in the book that often show up too. Highly recommend her!
Dr. Ybarra makes a clear-cut class unclear. There were multiple times throughout the semester that our group sought help, received an unclear answer, enacted her advice in our paper, and then ended up losing points on our final paper for doing exactly what she told us to do. Don't expect any real help from her, but definitely expect nitpicking.
So in this class(online), there are weekly quizzes and there are some textbook discussion material which you would have to type. You have to read the textbook and watch her lecture videos to do well on her quiz. There are no Tests. Also, reach out to the TAs if you are not sure how to study for this class. I think that A is doable. Good luck.
Dr. Ybarra is a very engaging professor. While the homework seems like a lot, it is ultimately there to help you succeed in class. She has carefully constructed her course to help you learn the best. She also listens very well to questions in the class and keeps you interested.
This is the most interesting psychology class I've taken. I really enjoyed the material, and it didn't feel like homework to me. She uses Perusall, which I find very helpful. I personally did not find the tests difficult. There are participation assignments in class sporadically, but she provides out of class options too. She really makes you think
Professor Ybarra made this class so interesting and fun to learn! We only had one final test that counts for a majority of your grade. As long as you put in effort and study, this class is an easy A. Take her if you can, highly recommend.
This class was very interesting. Exams weren't difficult and weekly readings and quizzes were easy. Perusall helped me understand the material. Overall great class
Dr.Ybarra is an amazing professor. Her lectures are engaging and very informative. She cares greatly about her students. As for assignments, we had weekly perusall readings which were easy once you got the hang of it, weekly quizzes, midterm, and final exam. The exams were not hard at all, just know all the information on the study guide.
honestly she was my favorite professor at UTD. take her courses, she is so sweet and if you struggle in the class its probably because u need to literally just apply yourself and read something.
I took this as a 5-week course over the summer asynchronously. This class is extremely time-consuming if you do it this way but the content was interesting so it didn't seem as overwhelming. If you read the chapters and watch the lectures then the quizzes are easy. I thoroughly enjoyed this class and is in my top 3 best classes ever taken.
Dr. Ybarra was an amazing professor and really made psychology loads of fun. She made the material easy to understand and was very good at giving time for the class to discuss their thoughts on the material. One thing to note is that other psychology professors let their students use their textbooks on the exams but Dr. Ybarra doesn't.
She is a wonderful professor who likes to have fun with her lectures. The lectures are also informative, but a majority of the material is in the textbook. You'll be reading it a lot, a little bit too much imo. The tests are fairly straightforward, though. I only found trouble in the textbook assignments cause of their length.
I took this as an online class, so you do not hear much from the professor throughout the semester. However, she responds to her emails very fast if you have questions. There are 14 quizzes, 14 chapter annotations, and 14 additional readings. This class was really easy and interesting to learn. Would definitely take this class and professor again.
I loved taking this course with her! The content was interesting, and I definitely could have done alright without attending (if I looked at lecture videos) but attendance made this class enjoyable. The textbook is free, and the assignments that come with it are a bit tedious but not hard. She really cares about what she's teaching and it shows.
Good teacher but she doesn't allow open note exams like the other psychology professors. Please keep this in mind.
This was a very interesting class, she really is passionate about psychology. Her format of the class is great and works well for people who have busy schedules. She does drop 2 grades to help you out, but overall no reason to get a bad grade unless it is bc of a quiz. Overall super easy!
Every week you have to annotate a chapter, do apply hw, and take a 20-minute quiz. There are no tests in this class, there are just 14 online quizzes. I recommend group collaboration for the class assignments as questions can be repeated! Pretty doable and interesting. I highly recommend taking the class online.
Dr. Ybarra cares a lot about students and wants them to learn the course content well, as well as help establish healthy course habits for young students. While the course isn't hard however, there is an abundance of small assignments that make the class feel somewhat tedious and time consuming.
Won't bump your grade.
I took PSYC 4343 over the 5-week summer period. Very fast past and time consuming, but manageable. There's a total of 12 modules, each containing chapter annotations (similar to discussion boards), chapter assignments, and a 25-minute quiz. Start early on the assignments so you do not fall behind! She also drops two of your lowest grades.
I just took her 5-week course and I had a few things to say. 1. There is a lot of reading to do! Beware. 2. She has a lot of drops but I do recommend using them when you actually need the drop 3. Her quizzes are not things you can find on Quizlet so easily and make sure to do her lectures because they will 100% be on the test. 2x them.
While there is a lot of textbook reading and annotations, I would highly recommend Dr. Ybarra. Her lectures are really clear, interesting, fun, and engaging. As long as you put in the effort to keep up with chapter readings this class should be easy to pass.
This class is super interactive and very lecture heavy, you should be there every class. If you're in it for the grade take an online/hybrid class because she's one of the only prof who have exams in person. They aren't hard but you actually have to know the content fr. Overall amazing prof and planning to take abnormal with her.
3 assignments due ever Tuesday. Your assignments are based on how many annotations you make on the reading as well as a multiple choice quiz. Overall the class is an easy A if you stay on top of your work
I loved Abnormal Psych with Dr. Ybarra! She really knows her stuff and cares for her students. Textbook for weekly Persuall annotations, 3 in person tests, optional cumulative final, infographic project, some extra credit at the beginning of the semester. Skim the textbook, go to class and review sessions, and follow her study guides for exams!
The only thing that is time-consuming in this class is the perusal readings. If you pay attention and watch the optional online lectures she posts (I say fill out the exam review sheets with those), then you will be absolutely fine. It's not a hard class, you do have to study, but it's very good and interesting. Ybarra is funny + enthusiastic.
Ybarra was the absolute best! Please take her! The only thing to really worry about in this course are the exams as they are a big chunk of your grade and are slightly challenging. Just read the textbook carefully n take notes in class that's really all I can say. She really cares a lot and makes class really enjoyable never a dull moment with her.
Never met Dr. Ybarra in-person before, but she's nice and funny. The class is really interesting, but get ready to read a lot. Weekly reading, homework and quiz. No exams for the online class. It's very easy to get behind so make sure you stay on top of it. Great class.
Very good professor! She is very funny, and knows how to work a crowd (the class)! Keep up with the Perusall annotations and thoroughly read through each chapter. Focus mainly on the exams those can make or break like with any class. If u don't think u should study something in a chapter, study it anyway in my experience it always showed up.
Amazing professor! I'm actually sad this class is over because of how much I enjoyed it. Ybarra is extremely caring and only wants the best for her students. The grading criteria is clear and organized, and the overall course is well-designed and engaging. Homework is reading the textbook (kinda time consuming). Exams are simple if you study !! :)
She does grade hard and the grading criteria wasn't always clear from the beginning, but she does give good feedback on how to improve. But I also had her for abnormal psy and intro to psy, and she's an amazing lecturer for those, so definitely take her for those classes.
Hated the class, love the professor! Dr. Ybarra made this class bearable and did her best to prep us for everything. I was dreading this class, but she helped out a lot and was always ready to help every group with whatever they needed. Her classes were more workshops to work with your group, there were minimal lectures. Amazing professor!
stubborn and not understanding at all especially for a psychology professor. make sure to get qr codes for attendance the second she puts it up even if you are there and have proof otherwise she will not care if you got it. super frustrating even though she teaches fine. ive been to all of the classes and received no attendance credits.
This teacher requires a tone of reading for her class; on top of that, the content she puts on her exams is lecture-heavy, so be prepared if you do end up taking this course because I went from a B+ down to a C+. Which at UTD matters and is draining for students.
The professor is amazing, sad the class ended fast. Her class is scheduled on weekly Persuall readings, 3 exams (optional final cumulative exam), and 2 small-projects. Be sure to attend her classes, watch the optional online lecture videos, attend the review sessions, and follow her exam reviews for each module!
Really good professor, you can tell she cares and is interested in what she is teaching. Homework is mostly just reading and exams are from a combination of the lectures and reading. Definitely recommend taking her
A lot of reading in this course! It did feel draining for a while because it is so much work, but you do learn a lot and the material is super useful. She does drop a decent amount of assignments. I would tell anyone to take this course, but do mentally prepare for the hard work going into it.
Great class with interesting, informative, and enjoyable lectures. There is a lot of reading required weekly in Perusall, 2 written assignments, and 4 exams (1 dropped) which are straight forward but comprehensive of both lectures and reading. Overall I'd highly recommend, but be prepared to put plenty of time into the reading and review for exams.
She's amazing! Her lectures are great and while there is a lot of reading, it's manageable. There are four non-cumulative tests throughout the semester and a cumulative final, lowest grade dropped and two projects. There are review sessions before the tests which basically give you all the answers. 15/10 would take again, she's great.
definitely a great professor, but this class was quite difficult! the perusall activities were so annoying and time consuming that i wish i could have just spent that time watching the lectures instead :(
dr. ybarra is a good professor. her lectures are very helpful and engaging. you should get an A in the class if u do ur readings + assignments on time! just make sure to use your time wisely since they are time consuming. tests are okay, they aren't like no-study easy, but they aren't like i'm-crying hard yk?
Dr. Ybarra is okay. However, I recently had a two-week hospitalization, and she was NOT willing to give any help without getting certified by ARC. There are NO leeways at all. I would say Dr. Ybarra is a great professor, but know that if you have any extenuating circumstances, you're cooked.
Dr.Ybarra is wonderful! Literally just do the work required, fill out each module's review guides, study them, and you will do great. Exams match the reviews exactly. Perusall isn't fun but it does help you learn the material. Lectures are engaging and help with retention too. I'd take her for every class if I could.
Dr. Ybarra is a good professor. She knows what she's talking about and will make the content really easy to understand. Her exams are from review documents from each module and questions only come from there so if anything make sure to study that. She gives bonus points at the start do them! Overall, easy course to get an A in.
Her lectures and study guides were super helpful, i just didn't really enjoy the class and homework. Everything is on a textbook that you have to log on and read mult. times a week. I just personally like finishing my homework up in a day or two and moving on to the next assignment, so it was a lil annoying.
Despite having a bit to read, you get a whole week to do the assignment. She's an amazing professor, hate to leave her class. This class was technically mandatory for me as an "upper level elective" and I highly recommend it to everyone, especially if you are a BBS major. Her lectures are incredibly insightful.
Dr. Ybarra is an excellent lecturer and has a wealth of knowledge about clinical/counseling psychology. I would highly recommend this class for anyone considering a career in the field. There is required reading every week through Perusall, but the courseload is manageable. She is very kind, friendly, and supportive, but also no-nonsense.
Great class! Lots of reading, but it felt meaningful. She gave study guides for each chapter and were actually relevant to the exam. Exams were a breeze; as long as you do your homework and read the textbook, class is a breeze.
Perusall with lots of reading each week, but no other hw. I usually did other classwork during her lectures & jotted notes down on her exam topics docs during class to study those the night before exams. Simple/interesting lecture content, straightforward exams—answers could be narrowed down easily. Super nice and has interesting stories to tell.
I love Dr. Ybarra! She's super organized and knowledgeable in the field of clinical/counseling psychology! I want to pursue a career in clinical psychology, and this course was immensely helpful as she is an expert in her field. The lectures are engaging, and I learned so much! She has flexible office hours and helped me with my career questions!
PLS take some other course if you are a Bio/Healthcare Studies major trying to take an easy upper-elective, this is NOT an easy upper-elective. I am taking the 5-week condensed version of the course and it is very demanding. Weekly readings take 1-3 hours each, not counting the weirdly worded confusing quizzes each week that you will take.
Tough grader, but super fair. The course is intense (5 weeks, LOTS of reading) but very well structured and actually understandable once you settle in. Her videos for each unit are a lifesaver. Expect to work hard, but you'll walk away feeling like you earned it.
She is a good professor, but there's a lot of work. It sometimes feels like a literature class with the extensive readings and annotations. The quiz questions are pretty confusing so studying very well is a must. You cannot get a good grade in this class without devoting 5+ hours a week for the 5 week course. If you do take this class, do 16 weeks.
One of the best professors I have had tbh. The lectures are fun and interactive, she explains everything really well. BUT beware there's A LOT OF WORK TO DO! If you just wanna do the course for just credits, ITS A LOT OF WORK. You HAVE to read all the chapters and post 10-20 comments throughout the chapter, 5 exams, and random participation surveys
Fun class, learned alot stuff that I can remember and apply to my life in the far future. Her classes are easy and interesting. The HWs are easy to do and super interactive. The exam questions are almost straight forward but some questions are a bit tricky but not bad. Easy A.
Dr. Ybarra is so amazing, by far one of the most interesting lecturers who works hard to make her class engaging and fun. Go to class and take notes during the lecture. She doesn't throw any curveballs on the exams. People say this class is a lot of work, but it's so manageable if you just... know how to read lol
i love how she formats her class, everything is online and accessible. attendance is taken in class but you have so many opportunities to make it up. her tests are extremely straightforward and HW is just an online textbook annotations. LOVED THIS CLASS
