Energetic, funny, well traveled and down to earth. He know his stuff too!
hes super nice but he is the hardest grader in the world
While he is obviously very well read, I felt that he was too hard to understand, as if he were much too sophisticated to be teaching at GTC. Harvard Eng Dept would benefit from this man. Grading very hard, and lesson very abstract. Study hard. Kind man.
One of my favorite teachers. He is a very interesting man, but very smart. I felt more intelligent after being taught by him. He is a very nice man. I definitely recommend him to any student.

Although his grading policy is kind of hard for a technical college....He is very easy going on due dates(jus gotta ask him to delay) and no hw
Gave me the basis of writing for the rest of my college career. Excellent teacher. Class requires work, but if it is done well, he is fair. I learned a lot in this class.
Rambles on about unrelated material, but overall a good teacher.
Tough but fair - will give you help if you ask for it.
I enjoyed his class although he is too qualified for a Technical College. He loves his job it shows in his willingness to help students achieve their educational goals. He is a little stiff and I didn't quite understand his jokes. Good choice!
Great teacher! He is tough on grading papers, but he expects college level work. He gave great reviews for tests. For those of you who say he is too hard to be teaching at Tech, must have forgotten that it's still a college! And like all college classes, you get out what you put in.
With the exception of Ross Wagner, he is the best english instructor at Greenville Tech.
He is a great teacher. I took 101 and 102 with him and I enjoyed English class for the first time in my life. I did not mind working hard for his class because I looked forward to his lectures.
Great instructor! His lectures were very interesting and entertaining. THIS IS NOT A CLASS FOR SLACKERS! If you commit to reading the assignments and asking for help, you'll do fine. Assignments ranged from short responses to oral presentations. I Highly recommend Dr. Bruster for any English class.
What can I say? Dr.Bruster is the best teacher at Greenville Tech! His lectures were fun and you knew what to expect on every test! He does grade the papers pretty hard but if you have any questions or concerns he is willing to listen! I actually overcame shyness with doing his oral presentations so that's a plus! If you need English 201. Take him!
Dr. Bruster is a great teacher. He is always willing to help get you on the right track with your papers, and I am a better writer after taking his class. He does expect you to do the work so don't expect to do well if you don't plan to work for it.
I dropped this class like a hot plate along with everyone else. He's waaaaaay too critical and needs to move to a higher up English class.
he would really be a great teacher at usc or clemson... not at greenville tech. he goes wayyyy in depth on things that he wont test you or make you write about - rambling i guess you could say. today was the last day to drop, and there are about 6 people left. i guess that says something... good luck.
Dr.Bruster is way too critical of everything. We turned in our rough drafts for him to comment on. When I received my draft back, he left no comments. So,I just used my draft for my paper only to receive a "C".He then had comments to tell me in person. He does not give directions and he expects you to figure everything out on your own.
Dr. Bruster is a very smart man who knows a lot about what makes a good paper, reading response, oral presentation, etcetera. Unfortunately, he isn't very clear about what he expects and grades everything VERY harshly. You'll be sure to learn a lot if you apply yourself but your GPR may suffer.
His class was pretty easy, but VERY boring. He does make occasional jokes and makes everyone laugh. I honestly felt like I left his class not learning anything. He does grade harshly and is not clear on what he wants for assignments so if you are not good at english I would not suggest this teacher!
Dr. Bruster is a hard teacher. He teaches at a graduate level. There is alot of interpetation required of you because you don't know what to expect from him. He grades hard on speeches also.
I loved Dr B's American Lit class. He does require a few speeches but it makes sense why he wants you to do them. I learned so much from this class and I highly recommend him. He's not an easy A but he will teach you a great deal.
Dr. Bruster is a good teacher but his test are very hard.He is very funny and willing to help but you are going to have to work hard!
He has an interesting method. Talk a lot in the discussions .. He's funny
Awful Teacher. The students in my class saw the good ratings on here and thought it would be okay...he's terrible. If you have him: drop-add! He doesn't explain what he's looking for in papers or how to write them. I have learned nothing. He's a harsh grader too.
Bruster was tough and hard to understand at times, but he answered questions. He really likes his job, which makes the class more enjoyable. I made a C because I didn't turn in one paper. The tests and most of the exam were vocabulary (I made A's on all). Do the papers and know vocab and you'll do well.
Dr. Bruster is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He is very knowledgeable and has a real passion for teaching. I took 208 in the summer solely to lighten my load in the Fall, but the class actually turned out to be very interesting, and I now feel more educated and well-rounded. Bruster may not give an easy A, but he'll give you an education.
Very hard and seemingly opinionated grader. You'll learn something but have to work your butt off.Picky on writing and not always specific with directions.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! He never lets you know what's going on and you will be lost and you will fail. I have learned NOTHING in this class. It's suppose to be about how to write an essay properly, but I have yet to learn anything about writing essays. yet again DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! PICK ANOTHER TEACHER.
Very hard grader. references his life alot and is sometimes confusing BUT i have learned alot from him esp about how to write a good paper. He does try and give you the easier grade so you have alot of assignments to turn in but they dont impact you as much. critical grader.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. YOU WILL REGRET IT.
Great instructor for 101. He is a bit harder for 102, but is always willing to give extra help if you need it.
Don't take this instructor. Confusing. Talks about his life more than the point of the class. Hard to understand directions. Difficult grader.
Don't take this instructor. He's so confusing. He talks about his life more than trying to teach us how to write proper essays. If you write and essay and he doesn't like what you have to say, he'll give you a low grade. Oh and if you do have this teacher, good luck passing the final. The essay is a bunch of nonsense.
Very hard professor, taught on a graduate level. Very active and funny, but hard to follow most the time. Grades very harshly on everything. Really gotta work hard justto pass this class!
tough but fair
I am not the best when it comes to writing so keep this in mind. Dr. Bruster is kind and wants his students to do well but at times I found his teaching to be confusing. If you are confused about something, he guides you to the answer rather than tells you at times which didn't help me one bit. I did become a better writer in the end though.
It is very hard to get an A in this class. I would not take him if I had another chance at it. You can only get a good grade on the papers if you go to him for help. You may think you are a good writer but you are not. If you love to talk about Egypt you will love this class.
Take another teacher. He tells you he wants this but then wants something else. I went to him for help several times and did what he said and barely passed his work.
If you think this class is easy, then you need drop it! Do not miss any classes or you will be FAR behind. He is a great teacher and really makes you think, but you really have to apply yourself. You will write three maybe four papers and they count alot! He does not answer questions directly he answers them with another question!
He is very confusing. He tells you he wants one thing and when you deliver it, he says it's wrong! Instead of teaching us how to write an essay, he told us about his stupid trips. Seriously, the only thing I learned was if a woman goes to Egypt, unaccompanied, she will get treated like a piece of meat. That's it. If you take him, good luck!
He grades way to harsh. I should have dropped his class when others had told me they failed because of him. overall I would not have picked him for my English teacher if I would have knew.
Dr. Bruster is a great teacher. The reason he is so great is that he makes you think for yourself, as he transgresses outside the norm of just making you memorize answers. Not for everyone, but an amazing teacher if you enjoy thought provoking conversation and thinking outside the box. If you want something different, this is your guy
I took his class and made a 69. I have never had a grade so low in English. I took the class again online and passed with a b
He's very confusing. He tells you he wants one thing but really wants another. I think he would be great for English majors who can devote all of their time to his class, but as a nursing major I just wanted an easy A in English. I had to work for my B in this class, even though I took all honors English classes in HS (w all As).
Let me start by saying I love English classes, but I dropped this one quickly. Very unclear about what he wants, he is also unclear about grading and how he grades. BEWARE.
He is very complicated and indecisive. He is never specific about what he wants but grades you harshly if you don't write to his expectations. He teaches the course as if he's trying to teach graduate English students. If you are taking 101 or 102, DO NOT sign up with him as your professor. He is awful.
Let me make this clear, I am a good student and I work hard. This class was very difficult and I struggled to make a C. I regret not dropping this class. Do not take him unless you are an English major and really know how to write, even then you will learn that you do not know how to write. Dr. bruster very kind but grades ridiculously.
Dr. Bruster is an amazing instructor, however, he is a very harsh grader. His writing assignments appear easy, but he grades them very closely. He is very easy to understand in lecture. He will definitely keep you interested in class. I would take him again if his grading were different. He expects you to learn at an ivy league level.
Dr. B is a tough grader, and sometimes seems unclear in what he expects of his students. It does seem he wants us to be Ivy League Eng majors, but if you listen to his lectures, and put in some hard work, you can pass his classes. I did get 2 As on papers, but all Bs on his tests to end up w an 89 in the class. Study for tests!
I had Dr. Bruster last Spring semester. He sets aside days to answer essay related questions (sometimes answered with a question unfortunately), but gets his point across. Overall, he is a great lecturer and helps you understand the content. Study for those tests. Easy A's to cushion your grade! As for essays, put in the work and ask questions.
In the entire semester I spent in this class I honestly have to say the ONLY thing I learned was to not take another class of his. His grading criteria & expectations on papers are nonexistent, & he honestly just rambles on about his personal life every class. He "teaches" this class like he's at an Ivy League institute. Don't take - SAVE YOURSELF.
I just finished fall semester with Dr. Bruster. He is a tough grader and he is not very clear in his directions. If you ask him for help, he will help you. You ultimately decide what you make by how much you interact and participate in this class. He will call on you to read, so just volunteer. Recommend to those that want a tough class.
Took me 2 months to figure out I wasn't taking Egypt 101. Also, Dr. Bruster is the most pretentious person you will ever deal with. Don't take this class.
You'll think its Egypt-101. Compares rising action to foreplay and climax to when a man cums, gay sex is a daily topic, invasive, doesn't answer questions unless he answers with a question, not clear, never precise, minimalistic, grades ridiculously, rambles, changes due dates to holidays, no regard for family life since he doesn't have one, weird
Dr. Bruster is very nice but he is not very clear in his directions. He talks a lot about his personal life in class. His lectures are very confusing. He is a harsh grader and gives very little feedback on essays. He expects his students to learn at an Ivy league level. I do not recommend him at all
Incredibly difficult to learn from. Most of his lectures are off-topic and awkward. One time he took the entire class into the men's restroom with no clear reason and gave strange commentary. He didn't have clear instructions for the essays and his study guides did not match the material for the tests. 40% of the final was not covered in class.
Dr. Bruster is a great professor and I would take his class again. He is very interesting and a bit quirky. No extra credit so make sure you write all the papers he assigns. He makes class interactive but not in a forced/uncomfortable way. Sometimes he will change due dates to help the class out.
I very much enjoyed this class. Dr Bruster is a smart man, has great philosophical tidbits scattered during the lectures, and gives good feedback.
Dr Bruster is like the coolest teacher ive had so far at greenville tech other than like Professor Uhall. He does some weird stuff but its really funny and its not so weird when put into context. I think hes the best english teacher the school has. The greenville tech english department just all around sucks but he always does a good job teaching.
Dr. Bruster certainly makes you work for your grade. Attendence is very important because he gives terrible instructions online, and will often explain the assignment in more detail in person. Very, very tough grader as well. The only positives are hes pretty funny and very nice, thats about it.
Read, come to class, learn his grading style, and pay very close attention to blackboard due dates. He is very funny but he is not your friend and will not let you make anything up, no matter how much you make him laugh.
He goes off tangent during lectures and likes to talk about traveling a lot. He barely talks about the assignments that are due while making you work for that A.
I hate the fact that we never used the textbook once. Get ready for essays and make sure you know how to write properly because he grades for specific mistakes. He sure likes to talk about Egypt and make the class uncomfortable. Stay away from him.
At first I thought that this class was great. Soon I realized that he doesnt actually teach anything. Instead, he rambles about traveling and different cultures with no literary context, then assigns work without teaching any material. I ended up dropping the class after he refused to let me switch a presentation day because I was sick. Be warned!
Makes me remember why I loathe English and enjoy math. Dr. Bruster is overcritical of every assignment; lowering your grade 15-20 points for minor errors. You will struggle to make an A in his class unless you are a world class author.
I had Dr. Bruster one semester and got a C. He is definitely a tough paper grader, but if you frequent his office, stay active in class, and frequent email questions, he will work with you. If you pass Dr. Bruster's class, you are ready to tackle ANY college paper. You may get a C in his class, but I have gotten As elsewhere because of his feedback
Dr. Bruster is peculiar with his teaching methods. He is a hard grader but he is really smart. He will help you if you need it without hesitation. He is so funny too.
Every day you show up, expect not much of him. You walk in and it feels like the easiest class you have ever taken, then you look at your homework and think it is the hardest. HE DOESN'T RESPOND TO EMAILS, rambles a lot about Egypt for no reason, grades very heavily, assigns a crazy ton of homework, and wants you to do things the old fashion way.
Last year I had a godawful experience with this class and failed and had to retake it this year. With Mr. B I felt like I was taking an entirely different class. It's not easy, but he actually gives useful feedback on your assignments, so you never feel like you didn't deserve the grade. He's super smart and has a lot of cool stories.
I've taken an online class with Dr. Bruster and he failed to be clear with the directions on discussion boards in the prompts. The feedback given on these discussion boards is often vague and unhelpful. The real instructions for the discussion boards can exclusively be found on the grading rubric, which was hardly mentioned beforehand.
Good teacher. Talks a lot. Can be hard to reach sometimes. Pretty solid professor however. Clearly very knowledgeable
I would not recommend Professor Bruster to anyone. If you are willing to consistently ask him questions then you can get by. The assignments are difficult and he is very critical. He doesn't go over the quiz content, only essays. He is unpredictable, he will says one thing but wants something very different. He is just very difficult as a teacher.
Dr.B is a very confusing teacher. He says one thing but means totally different. He assigns a lot of work and takes a very long time to grade. I skipped about half the year because I could not bare to be in the classroom with him. He is very out of touch with students. I wound not take his class ever again.
Dr. Bruster clearly loves english, but he is not great at giving instructions online. Make sure you go to class, so you know what is going on. The coursework is very straight forward, and you can work ahead since the work does not require in class instruction. Just do the discussion posts and find a topic you like for the essays.
By far the worst English teacher I've ever had. He's a cool guy but not a good professor. Just rambles for the entire class period. Grades your papers and journal entries as if you're in advanced English classes, not an entry-level English class. The only thing you learn is how to use Achieve online.
The lectures do not make sense at all. I barely attended his class because all he does is ramble about his life outside of the USA. His grading scale is 0%, 75%, or 100% no in-between. He does not relate any of his lectures to class work and does not go over assignments. The homework is due on random days of the week and does not make sense.
His assignments were confusing and instructions were unclear. He scheduled zoom calls on Sunday at 8pm and only 5 people would show up. He would use a word document to explain the subject and again, very confusing. I missed one essay that was 10% of the grade and went from A to a B in the last week. I would not recommend his class.
This man cracks himself up with semi colons, which was a great indicator of how this class was about to go. While I did ok with my grade, it was the most boring dry class ever. An online class with Sunday night Zoom calls was a joke, including one he scheduled during Super Bowl...granted he canceled last minute. There's got to be a better option.
Constantly talks about personal life and never relates in-class busy work to the ACTUAL assignments due. The workload isn't a lot but the grading is very steep and there is almost no room for extra credit or late work.Overall not bad but you will be your own teacher for this class.
He believes he is the funniest human being to ever exist. He spends over half the class time lecturing on his beliefs about society, how hard he has it because of his race, and never is able to finish a lesson because of these reasons. He also proceeded to go on a twenty-minute rant about women's clothing and his opinions about how it defines us.
Very in-depth and intelligent professor, if you're more of a superficial learner his style will challenge you to pursue deeper analysis of material. Very lenient grader from my experience, other professors specifically outside of English are actually more prone to criticism of papers.
He was a great person but he tended to ramble on with his lectures. He also tends to assign homework that is not relevant to what was discussed in class. The assignments feel like a upper level english class and not that of a beginner 101 class. I would not recommend him
He is really nice and extremely funny but he tends to ramble on random things. His lectures are very random and confusing. But overall he was a fine teacher.
Unreasonable to deal with in regards to mistakes. I was late in submitting a test by the due date of 8:00 PM, this is because every other assignment I've taken is always due at midnight. Upon reaching out to him I was met with a lack of care and respect in his response, which can be summed up as "get over it." I ended up dropping the class after.
Dr. Bruster is a very knowledgeable and intelligent professor. However, when it comes to actually teaching in a classroom setting, he simply misses the mark. I only went to class about half of the time because his lectures tended to not be relevant to the assignments. On top of this, his grading was very strict. He is a really funny guy though.
This professor grades like this is a much higher level course than it is. He would give good feedback, and then you would fix it, so he would find something else next time and the grade would remain unchanged.
The guy is delusional and forgets his own assignment instructions then refuses to increase your grade even after you show him that he made a mistake. He does not lecture properly and ends up going on long, annoying rants about his life (which would be fine if he squeezed in some teaching). He also goes against his syllabus too often.
NO IDEA WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT, RAMBLES, CANNOT HOLD A CONSISTENT TRAIN OF THOUGHT, FORGETS HIS OWN INSTRUCTIONS, GRADES POORLY REGARDLESS OF WORK
Dr. Bruster refused to call me by my nickname and it drove me insane. Imagine your name is Katherine and your entire life you have been called Kate and all of the sudden this one professor is calling you Katherine. You repeatedly tell him you prefer to be called Kate but he only calls you Katherine. It gets really annoying really fast.
Dr Bruster was inflexible and dismissed valid concerns. Gave me a low grade for alleged AI use without using the approved detection tools. Only corrected it after the department head stepped in. Group project policy punished me for a teammate's late upload. Course structure was frustrating and not adult-learner friendly.
Grades work based on HIS style of writing, and contradicts himself constantly. He rambles about unrelated topics, and half of the lectures didn't even make sense. We read a book, never discussed it, and then had quizzes on it. Lectures are disorganized and he doesn't know how to work a computer properly. We are held at higher standards than needed.
If you are looking for a sign to not have this professor, here it is. Turn around and run while you can.
Doesn't lecture good. Grades terribly. He is a Dr in English that's all you have to know. His fav person is ben franklin. Doesn't specially teach what's on the test or tell you need to focus on those aspects of story you just have to guess. Grades every DQ like essay.
This professor is the worst I have had so far. He is not proficient enough in technology to run an online class, and does not take responsibility for his own mistakes. There's no test prep, it's just a shot in the dark. He grades far too harshly for a class of this caliber and often the feedback is not available to view because it was a test grade.
I did not enjoy my time in Professor Brusters class. He really didn't teach us anything and would spend class time reminiscing about his time living in Egypt. He is a very tough grader and does not treat this course like an English 101 course. I can't recall one thing he actually taught us and he doesn't explain what he's talking about.
Professor Bruster's teaching is very mediocre. I didn't find his class difficult—do what's assigned and it shouldn't be hard. He rambles about Egypt during lectures, and you don't learn much from them. Assignments are manageable, though. Overall, his teaching style and lectures aren't the best, but the assignments and essays are easy to do well on.
