ok, easy material, no point in coming to class except grades on participation, unclear when she talks, confusing at time, scary personality
Take the class if you want to take a rather simple class. No need for notetaking so it is a good nap time cuz she does grade on attendance and participation, but her class is worth it for an easy A.
The class is not hard, for a 300 level class. She's kind of a silly lady. The course material is interesting, but her teaching style doesn't cover a whole lot. No final, though.
The class is realy easy. She isn't a good teacher, but she posts the notes on D2L. She gives you a study guide before the tests, and if you study the parts mentioned on the guide you'll get an A. The writing assingments kind of suck, but if you try at all you'll probably get 20/20 on every one.
Easy class. If you are looking for a good class to sleep in that requires attendance this is your class. Class consists of powerpoints with the lights off, all of which are online so you dont have to take notes. Possible 50 points of extra credit, take advantage of them to secure an A.
The class would be pretty easy if effort was put into it, but I could not force myself to try very hard because the information was not interesting to me at all. Grading scale is easy, but I bombed two tests because the info was too boring to study. Weird personality, talks about sex, lesbians.etc
I've taken all of her classes. If you have a basic interest in asian history and studies, I recommend taking her classes. She knows what she's talking about. Although her lectures can get a bit boring, she does try to make them interesting.
This class is so pathetically easy that it is scary
She is a horrible professor. not helpful and very unclear. Good luck trying to locate her on campus she hardly makes it to her office hours. thought it was really bad that she talked about sex and incest and lesnianism during lectures. really easy because she does not grade anything herself.
Class is extremely easy but very boring. Almost every class is a powerpoint presentation. Teacher is dull. Possibly the worst teacher I've ever had.
Boring and a poor lecturer. 158 is a huge slack class though, all the notes are on D2L and the tests are a joke. No reason not to get at worst a B in here.
One of the nicest professors, but students don't respect her enough. Learn a lot in the class, but all the notes are online on D2L. If you're interested in Asian history, Shinno is EXTREMELY intelligent. Interesting assigned readings. Do-able writing assignments, extra credit opps. She's a great person to have as a reference. Very outgoing woman.
can be hard to understand at times. class is easy, but you still have to put in the effort to earn an A. No such thing as an easy A. Shinno presents the material in her own special way which may make some students uncomfortable, but she's a great lady. Plus the readings she assigns are very interesting. Intereted in Asian History? Take her.
Dr. Shinno knows her material, however her lectures are essentially read verbatim off her Power Point presentations.
horrible horrible horrible
Seems to do better in upper division. If you follow her guidelines for papers and ask questions, you'll do well in the class. Just act interested. She can be a bit spacy, but really knows her material.
She know a lot about the subject she teaches, but she never rubs it in your face that she knows more. It's great to get a historical perspective by someone actually form that country. It's an "easy" class if you take responsibility for your reading and assinments.
This class is so interesting. I went into it dreading the class and now really enjoy it. Shinno is a very good teacher and always can answer any random question that comes upon her. The class is not an "easy" A, you have to study for the exams, but there are a lot of other easy points plus 30 points extra credit :)Awesome class for foreign cult.
She said this regarding the Tiananmen Square incident, 'Yeah, in retrospect, the kids probably deserved it.' How can you teach a subject when you dont support education and free thought?
tests are super hard. esp the fill in the blanks! you better have a good memory if you want to do good on the tests. lectures are really slow and boring. hard to understand most of the time. but the papers are okay and she grades them pretty easy.
no, she CANT answer any random question you ask her. she is a horrible proffesor. she didnt even know what the statue of liberty was; she IS a disgrace and the tests are impossible. i suppose if you can stay awake during her boring lectures and memorize the information you could do ok.
Some times her lectures can drag on, but most of the stuff she talks about is prety interesting. She sometimes gets confused on what she's saying, but she is pretty funny. there are alot of papers, but the grading is very light. The tests are worth alot, but if you study you'll do fine.
Very interesting class, she's very helpful and tests are not tough at all. Almost everyone foind it's interesting and easy.
Class is not very interesting. Grades assignments hard, but her grading scale is very easy. Lots of writing. Terrible book report required. Nice woman.
She teaches interesting information, however, the way the class is run is more like high school. You get participation points for raising your hand and saying something, and the class discussions and papers aren't very in depth at all.
One of the worst professors I have ever had.She talks to the board, treats us like we are in high school, and cannot answer an abstract question.I dread class every day we have it.too bad I need this class to graduate.I hate every minute of it.Do not take if you dont have to.We are adults and she fails to realize that every single day!!
She can take a little getting used to. She lectures very fast, and her accent can be a little tricky. However she has a great command of the subject matter, and I loved the class.
As a Japanese lady it's great to get East Asian history from someone that used to live in that region. Though she is slightly biased at times, she tries to present the whole picture from an Eastern and Western point of view. The class is very clear cut and she tells you exactly what you need to do to get an A. I'd take her again in the future.
Worst professor I have ever had! Interesting subject but she ruined it. She doesn't know how to lecture, she just reads her powerpoints. Do not take this class!
Class seemed interesting, but she is a bad teacher. Gets side tracked too much and panics over little things that are pointless.
I have read all the other ratings of this professor, and I think everyone needs to back off big time. One gets out of the class what one puts into the class. Read and study the textbook, do the assignments and follow the requirements, and respect her for the scholar she is. I did, and I liked the class and the professor. Extra credit: good.
Reicko is an ok professor. She is obviously interested in the subject she teaches. She knows a lot about the topics she teaches. Lectures are very boring and drag on. Tests are not too tough but are 250 points each so studying is a must! Do-able class and professor. But if you have another choice, probably take the other choice
Absolutely terrible teacher. All it was was powerpoints, and all of the powerpoints went against what my high school teachers said was good. She also forces us to study via notecards. She forces us to write papers in the 5 paragraph BS way, which my previous ENGL teach told me to eliminate from my mind forevre and burn. Cant respect her, cant learn.
This class is extremely boring. She reads off powerpoints the entire time. Each test is 250 points so if you don't pass them there is no hope. She requires you to participate for points, just like a high school class would. I wouldn't take this class again.
Should not be allowed to teach at UWEC...mispronounces words when she reads them word for word off the powerpoint. Requires participation from all 70 or so students, a difficult feat for a large classroom. Also requires attendance, yet her teaching style makes it more tempting to skip. Makes her TAs correct papers, so it's a crapshoot for grading
Absolutely ridiculous class. She didn't know anything about what she was teaching and got most info off of wikipedia. She doesn't know answers to questions. The only thing that was good was the fact that her assignments and tests were super easy. TAs graded everything though so if they messed up, you'd have to convince her to change it. Worst prof.
Worst professor I have have ever had!! Reads directly off of power points which she gets from the internet. She does not know the material she is covering and is extremely unhelpful. Do not take this class unless you wish to waste 3 hours a week for an entire semester. Just don't take it.
This ended up being a very boring class! Dr. Shinno can be very hard to understand and at times its clear she has no idea what she's talking about and frequently doesn't know the answers to questions. The two short papers she assigns are easy As but the tests are hard! Also requires way more participation than is possible in such a big class.
Easy Class but bad Professor. Has TA's correct assignments which is based on their opinion. Discourages you. Had a lot of points taken off on history paper because she claimed I didn't cite my sources on my family history in which I interviewed my parents and did cite them. Don't recommend. Loved Southeast Asian history until she taught it.
most boring class ever...but easy. 3 tests, 2 are with a partner. She really has no idea what she is talking about, kids in the class know more about asia than she does. absolutly terrible teacher but you don't need her to teach you anything, study powerpoints a couple nights before class and you'll do fine, didn't pay attention once, got an a-
Very nice woman. She is from Jap. and studied Chinese hist in school, so she knows a lot about both countries. However, she does not have good classroom mgmt- the students run the class. Make the ID cards - easy participation and they actually help with the exams. All the info for the exams is on the ppts, don't really need to read the text.
Terrible teacher. Does not know the info that she is actually teaching in the class. She doesn't even know the answers to the quizzes until after (since she gets the quizzes straight from the internet). If you want to get educated in a history class, this is not the one for you.
Horrible professor. Doesn't know her own material and doesn't utilize her TA's for uses that would benefit the classes ability to learn. If you're going to take a history class, don't take it with her.
She said she's never taught this class before and it shows. She is God awful. Don't take her if your taking this class. Students teach the class, TA's grade everything and she wanted the students to write the test too. Students do the lecture and she just sits there.
She's a nice lady but an awful prof. Lots of out of class work. She doesn't do anything. Students teach the class and TA's do the rest
Pretty funny lady. Doesn't seem to know a whole lot about this specific clas though. Weekly writings and tests are fairly easy too.
Worst professor ever. Made iClicker quizzes in the beginning AND end of lecture to keep people there. Weekly assignments took me upwards of 3 hours, more than 2,000 words and still only got 70% on them. She has groups teach the class and never actually teaches herself. So unorganized and unclear.
She is incompetent. She has very good intentions, but from my point of view I sincerely question the authority of the University if they allow such an absent-minded person as a professor. Very inefficient, very tedious.
Worst history teacher at UWEC
Reiko is disorganized and stutters alot. She gets off tasked. Iclickers is everyday so attendance is mandatory. She doesn't really help you. I recommend to look at the powerpoints on D2L but she always post it up after lecture, so just sit in class and take notes on what she says not the powerpoints.
Dr. Shinno is very knowledgeable. She is a tough grader on papers. However, she is fair if you follow the directions. Great personality. Not the most organized, but her syllabus is very specific and concise. I really enjoyed the class.
Professor Shinno knows her stuff, but often goes off topic and into her own, usually weird, rants. If she doesn't understand something you say in class she just assumes you're wrong and don't know what you're talking about. Class isn't really lectures either, the entire hour and fifteen minutes is class discussion along with a quiz everyday.
Shinno is a very knowledgeable professor, but often goes off into her own little world. There are no lectures, it's essentially the class teaching each other. iClicker quizzes everyday, and if she doesn't knowunderstand what you're trying to say, she just brushes you off.
So to begin with I would say this is an easy class and for that reason I don't regret taking it. However, myself and I'm sure the majority of my classmates wonder how she got a doctorate. Sometimes I feel like I know more about this class than she does and I'm not alone. Still, it takes minimal effort to get an A so I get over it.
Professor Shinno is very unorganized, she has very long, pointless lectures, and has her TA's grade everything which sucks. On the plus side, its very easy to get points. There is a website of all the quiz answers that you can just memorize, and the tests have those questions as well. She also gives extra credit. Overall, easy but VERY boring
Kind of interesting class. Shinno is pretty funny. Test are very easy if you study.
Pretty simple class. Everything is straight forward. If you don't like talking in class this isn't the class for you. Participation matters. Does take time to study for tests though. Be prepared for clicker quizzes often. Other than that Shinno is a good teacher but can sometimes be hard to talk to if arguing, relies on her TA's too much also.
Dr. Shinno is very nice and passionate but quite disorganized and grading requirements were often unclear. Tests were difficult but there was no cumulative final and easy extra credit was offered. Assigned readings were reasonable and interesting, and Dr. Shinno usually gives good lectures and tries to create good class discussion.
She is pretty clear on what she wants from you but you have to cater to what she wants to hear. The class is a decent amount of work, but that's expected for a 300 level history class. The biggest problem I had with her was how harsh she was on citations. If your citations and footnotes aren't flawless, she will take around 20% off your paper grade
Class is challenging. You have clicker quizzes every other class and attendance is mandatory. The tests are challenging and you have to know years.
Very clear expectations. Fun lecturer. Very straight forward. Do the readings and review the power points, you'll have no problem. Offers about 3% extra credit but better then nothing. Put effort in writing assignments. Tough grader. Participation is graded. Gets annoying. Overall pretty good class. Would recommend.
iClicker quizzes every day. Goes over the homework in class the next day. Puts you in groups to make you do four papers on different chapters in the book. Participation matters. Has office hours. I didn't have any issues with her so I'd say she's an okay teacher. She didn't really stand out either so she's not terrible
Dr. Shinno just goes with the textbook, so its a must to read it, but she never gets through the whole chapter. So half of the questions on her exams are things that she did not get through and the book has a lot of information that's little but it ends up being on the test. AND you have to do writing assignments that she takes forever to grade.
Professor Shinno is disorganized in class, and it shows through. She rarely lectures, and just makes her students do questions out of the book-she spends the last two minutes of class rushing through them, so you hardly learn any material. It's frustrating to be forced to attend a class that I feel I could pass without ever going to class.
Professor Shinno's quizzes/exams were based off of the textbook. Lectures were also based off of the textbook and didn't give a lot of new information. Part of your grade includes attendance, participation, and numerous 5-question iClicker quizzes, so make sure you show up. Gives lots of opportunities for extra credit.
She might be the worst professor I've ever taken. I've never seen a professor so unorganized and late. Very rude about answering questions or getting questions wrong. Almost a ridiculous amount of iclicker quizzes that you have to review for, and the exams are hard. Don't take her course if you're shy because her participation is worth 80 points.
I was not a fan of her at all. I could barely understand a word she was saying and she didn't understand the material she was teaching either. She did have times when she was funny, but they didn't happen often. She is a tough grader and makes you read a lot, which I don't mind, but she didn't know what she is talking about.
Ms. Shinno is one of the worst professors you will ever have. It is clear she is not very knowledgeable about almost anything. A favorite memory of mine is a student asking a very clear, intelligent question and her declining to answer it because she didnt feel like it. She gives a lot of iClicked quizzes and is stupidly unorganized.
Ms. Shinno is unclear of how to fulfill her requirements to be met. Lots of iClicker quizzes. Hard to understand at times. Overall a horrible professor to have.
I felt as if I was performing well, but my grades were not to my expectations. It is hard to know exactly what she wants from her students, but still grades easy no matter how you perform.
Towards the 2nd half of the semester she starts grading tougher and shes condescending sometimes and doesn't care if she's rude to her students. Doesn't seem to care about her students very much. Class overall is easy if you put in the smallest bit of effort. If you do absolutely nothing your grade will suffer. Talking is a part of your grade.
Heavily relies on clicker quizzes, you will have at least one almost every week, but as long as you review her power points you will be fine. Make sure you participate in class and ask her questions that way you get participation points that can either benefit or hurt. Doesn't stick with syllabus often which is very frustrating. Didn't enjoy class
Puts a lot of emphasis on class participation. If you don't ask/ answer questions in class you will suffer. iClicker quizzes are given every other class period and graded heavily. Tests are easy and she holds review sessions as well as office hours to help students if needed. Lots of extra credit opportunities given out to keep up grades.
She really emphasizes in-class participation which is dumb. Study her power points for the tests and do study guides and you'll do fine. Class is a little harder at times because it is Asian history so its unfamiliar. Also take clicker quizzes every week and i would cheat of my neighbor most of the time. #lit #bangbang #sosa
super long lectures, tons of homework and clicker quizzes, weird system on getting participation points, lots of reading.
Professor Shinno does give out a lot of assignments and you might get frustrated at first but later on you will understand what she wants from you. She is overall not a bad professor. Participation is important and it is easy credit. Just raising your hand to ask a simple question counts as participation.
Hello, welcome to history one fifty-two, how r yu? Get ready for a boring lecture and confusing quiz questions. Oh, and you need to participate or you will not do well.
it really changes you, it really changes you, it really changes you.
Terrible, just terrible. Shinno sits at the front of the room and lectures almost the entirety of the period, but she will go off on multiple tangents (and I mean LONG tangents) and fail to cover most of the material that will be on the exam. Not only that, but participation points are a ridiculous factor in your grade and are very hard to earn.
Professor Shinno isn't the easiest professor, however if you pay attention during lectures, participate, and listen to her instructions it is a pretty easy class. There are a fair amount of writing and reading assignments, but as long as you don't procrastinate them they are also pretty easy
Overall Reiko is a good professor, her lectures are super interesting and the tests are easy if you pay attention in class. However, the participation points are bogus and she doesn't always take note if you participated in class.
Prof. Shinno is okay, but she has a hard time engaging students in lectures and her class just wasn't fun. I'm a history major, so I enjoy the content, but her lectures were lacking in my opinion. Gives a lot of clicker quizzes, but the InQuisitive quizzes outside of class are open book. If you're taking her for a gen. ed., pick a different class.
I really like the way she teaches. She is always so happy to lecture and is very passionate about the material. The quizzes are pretty easy, but you have a very short amount of time to take them. She is a very nice grader, and it is very easy to do well in the class if you pay attention.
Hard to understand, does not give many resources. Long lectures that go off on tangents and hardly cover any of the material on the tests or quizzes.
Dr. Shinno knows a lot about her subject, but she tends to go off on tangents. I took this as an online course, and it was a lecture for the entire time each day. Most of the time, the lectures barely cover what is on the quizzes, so I would suggest reading the textbook and doing the study guides to pass. Overall, boring and hard to follow.
I really enjoyed this class and the content. There was no daily homework, just a group project and many mini essays throughout the semester. My only complaint is that she took forever to grade assignments, but she did move back due dates around a lot (which was nice). Also participation plays a huge role in your grade so be prepared to talk.
prof Shinno is a very funny professor, She is very unorganized, super nice lady, but really its best if you read the books given and then you answer questions based on that it will help you for sure. You dont need to take super detailed notes while listening to lecture just take some key things down. just be supportive to her on zoom she needs help
She is really passionate about what she is teaching. Her zoom lectures were very boring and hard to follow. She is really sweet and responds to emails quickly. Lots of writing assignments, quizzes, and tests are online and there are study guides. It was just hard to follow in the lectures because it wasn't very interactive. A good person though.
Ran into several problems with this professor. If you have a disagreement she won't have a civil conversation about it. You have to write papers without almost any information. If you can avoid taking an upper level class from her, I would strongly advise you to, but she is fine for HIST 152.
She SUCKS. I don't say that about very many teachers, but she barely did anything. If you want an easy class, take it online, but all of the material she has is from online resources. She copies other power points and claims them as her own. I was extremely disappointed and quite frankly, I have no idea how she has a job.
This was an online class that was easy to understand and she was easy to reach via email. The online website she used for this class always let you get 100% on homework assignments (had 3 a week) and 5 canvas exams.
The class was about world history but, 90% of it was just focused on Chinese history. I took the class to learn about world history not just Chinese history.
She's not that bad at all, I've had her for two history classes. She is very very unorganized and will update the course a million types, but if you can handle unorganization, none of her courses are that hard. She doesn't make history the most interesting, but you can get a decent grade without much work. Super nice.
Dr. Shinno seems like a decent person, but she's the worst lecturer I've ever had. She lectures on history while readings are on women's issues, which would be fine, but the lectures are full of anecdotal historical AND personal stories peppered with full chest belches (I am not kidding, prepare yourself). Very hard grader; available by email.
Shinno was an alright professor. I had her for HIST 152 online. She seems like a really nice lady but her class wasn't the most interesting. She posted all her lectures as videos and assigns a lot of reading. But considering the class is online you don't necessarily have to put in a lot of work to get a good grade.
She is just the worst ever.
