Franz is a GREAT teacher! A lot of students have struggled with his deep German accent but he will take all the time you need to understand what's being taught-He's very patient and tries to keep math "uplifting" :) I had him my second time taking 1050 and he was so patient with me and helped me get a good grade-He gives you the grade you work for.
Professor Franz is the best!!! My third time taking 1050. He was understanding, nice, and graded on understanding instead of right or wrong answers. The best there is.
A nice guy that is willing to work with you but he is not a good 1050 teacher. He would often teach us math theories instead of how to just do the math & the problems. He should still be teaching upper level math not 1050 as he does not know how to dumb it down to an understandable level. I would recommend this teacher only if you are a math major.
Has a heavy German accent so it is hard to understand him sometimes. His volume of voice makes it a lot harder to understand him because he is so quite. He's willing to go back and help class understand (if asked). Pace is really fast.
Great teacher, extremely helpful and accommodating. He cares about his students and wants them to succeed.
He was an amazing person and wonderful teacher. Face it 1050 is hard, but he takes time to help you understand. He worked my tests with me my homework, anything i needed. He wants you to succeed! One of the best math experiances of my life. Take him, do the homework go to math lab. you will pass no problem!
Professor Franz grades easier on tests than any other math teacher I've seen. Very friendly to talk with and is willing to work around schedules. Do the work and get an A. I took 1050 and Calc from him and did well.
Absolutely loved this class. Very helpful teacher. Homework was a bit lengthy but overall the best math teacher i have had at UVU
Hes a pretty good teacher, but he's from germany so his English is kinda not a strength. He will drone on about things that dont mean much alot but overall it was ok.
Prof. Franz is a great teacher. This is the first year he taught STATS. He is so willing to work with every student to make sure they understand. His accent was not hard to understand at all. Great Teacher!!! Loved his class
Reinhard is very knowledgeable with math. He knows the theory and the "why" behind what you are doing. His overall mission at UVU is to help you succeed and you'll be able to tell from taking his class. Very helpful and kind guy. Great if you're going into higher math classes.
Has thick, heavy german accent, but he knows his stuff. Very understanding, and helpful. Sometimes goes on tangents. Most of the Grade comes on tests, but the study guides are almost verbatim what the test looks like. Great Teacher.
Statistics is helpful for Community Health majors. Professor Franz had us read each chapter (main/important points), discuss, ask questions, apply to life situations/exeriences, and solve problems together as a class. Fair, friendly. Great teacher!
Very nice guy. Class wasn't always interesting and got confusing sometimes but he is willing to work with you. He preps you with a great study guide before tests and isn't a harsh grader. Definitely recommend.
Prof is kind and fair but difficult to learn from. Expects homework to be done before you learn the material and he'll review key concepts. Difficult to learn from, I could have taught myself the material.
Fantastic teacher. Go into his class expecting to LEARN trig and you will do well. You will be rewarded with a solid understanding of Trig if you pay attention, take notes, and study. It is clear his goal is education and is willing to work with those that struggle. I would recommend him.
Amazing Teacher! His native tongue is German, so he you have to pay good attention, but he will do everything he can do help you. He tries with all his heart. He WANTS you to succeed and get an A. If you try, its easy. His test are nice and short, about 5 questions each, and the reviews basically tell you what the questions will be. TAKE THIS CLASS
Has an accent, but you get used to it. He is awesome though! I got a B in MAT 1010 and an A in 1050. He goes fast. But stops when he knows his students are confused. Use the reviews, do hw often and you'll get a good grade in the class. Just pay attention and ask questions.
He is a very nice and fair teacher. However, I learned more from reading the book than I did in his class. He tends to confuse the students way to easily. Attendance isn't mandatory. His reviews are basically the exact questions on the tests. Have to be able to understand his accent.
OH MY GOSH nicest teacher ever!!!!!! TAKE THIS CLASS! He will do anything in the world to make sure you know the concept. He cares about his students and makes an effort to help them whenever you ask. He is German, has tiny accent but just go to class, pay attention, and you will be FINE! Most wonderful teacher I have ever had. L O V E D H I M ! !
This class was definitely harder than my 1010 class, which baffled me because we seemed to be reviewing the exact same material. I liked Franz, and I hate to say it, but I think that he makes math harder than it needs to be. Sometimes he even seemed confused by all of it. I had to study at home a lot to try to make sense out of what we did in class
WE ARE IN COLLEGE! You will have to pay attention and do some homework. Prof Franz is so kind and just wants everyone to succeed and will do anything to help that happen. I received an A but you just have to do your homework. Midterms are around 6 questions and the reviews are almost exactly the same as the tests. He makes it as easy as he can.
I love Professor Franz he is the sweetest professor ever. The first time I took him for math 1040 and got a B+. I could've done better, but finals week got cray cray with other classes. Just took him for math 1050 and got an A. You have to just keep up. Sometimes learn it on your own in the math lab, but his tests are doable.
I've never met a more caring professor. He will do anything in his power to help you with his class. He offers extra credit and asks the class for insight on grading. You won't regret taking a math class from Reinhard Franz.
He was an amazing teacher. The tests and midterms were just like the reviews. He would answer any questions that you had. Study and you will do fine. I spent many hours in the math lab.
He knows math really well, The hardest part I had with this class is the lack of class participation, he really just lectures and firehoses you with information. And as he gets excited his accent gets heavier and his legibility drops as well. He moves extremely fast and is hard to follow, but I agree he's probably the nicest Prof I've ever had.
professor franz is very passionate about his students passing and being successful. however, his classes were boring, he lectured the whole time without including the class and does not review homework. Your grade heavily relies on your test scores. he also has a heavy german accent!
GREAT guy, very nice. PROS- Homework isn't collected, so do it till you understand the material. He's VERY nice and interested in the success of his students. He does have a German accent and is a bit softspoken. Our original classroom had a noisy AC and I couldn't hear him, however he understoo and moved the class :)
If you need a MATH 1050 credit, take him! He is German so you have to pay attention during class because of his accent but he is MORE than willing to help. He knows he has a thick accent so he tries as hard as he can. Class isn't mandatory but helpful especially during the review days. The Reviews are almost exactly how the tests are going to be.
He really wants you to understand the subject and if you follow along with the textbook and the class you will. The accent can make it hard to understand but he's always up to answering questions.
He's very passionate about math! He loves teaching at UVU and BYU. He has a heavy german accent so make sure you sit close! He trusts you to grade yourself on how much homework you completed then uses your rate as extra credit. He also let us make up some test questions for half credit! What teacher does that??! AWESOME! Go to math lab every day!
Professor Franz genuinely cares about his students. He doesn't assign ridiculous amounts of homework, only enough for you to get the hang of things and any extra problems you do he gives you extra credit for. I took the class in the Summer so we had 3 tests including the final. He tells you exactly what you need to know for the tests. Amazing prof
Professor Reinhardt is extremely intelligent. Some of the proofs or formula's that he just has committed to memory is incredible. His lectures are different, as in he likes to prove why things are they way that they are. He cares more about you learning the concepts rather than just busy work. His accent isn't bad, he allows some test corrections.
I took honors calculus from professor Franz, and I really liked this professor. He has a pretty strong german accent, but you can still totally understand what he is saying. If you show up to class, take good notes, and do all of the homework, it shouldn't be a problem at all to get a good grade in his calculus class. I highly recommend him.
He is the nicest math teacher I have ever had. I took his Math 1050 and 1210 class and I got an A in both. He allows test corrections, and his test reviews are almost exactly like the test. He just really wants his students to pass, so if you do the homework and put some effort into it, you'll get a good grade. Highly recommend him!
Franz is a great teacher! He know what he is talking about but he is human, just like us. Very sweet man. Loves his students. Doesn't give a lot of homework. He doesn't give a lot of tests either but his tests can be tricky, you just have to read carefully. Gives extra credit.
Professor Franz is such a sweet, and amazing guy! With that being said, he is very quiet.. Making it a bit difficult to learn. In this class, you kind of have to teach yourself a lot of the material. Your grade is also weighed heavily on your test scores! Study groups are helpful for this class. Loved the professor.. The class itself.. Not so much.
He's truly the sweetest old man. But he has a thick german accent and he speaks so quietly it's really difficult to understand. I pretty much self-taught myself the entire semester. That being said, his tests are almost identical to the study guide so do it and you should be fine. If you're motivated, you will do well. I ended up getting an A.
Professor Franz is truly inspirational. I had trouble during my summer semester & I had been in a car accident and he was so understanding and he really cares about his students understanding the subject and getting the help they need! He's a wonderful teacher and mentor. He's got a heart of gold, and is so incredibly intelligent. He's the best!
Professor franz is such a sweetheart he will spark up conversations with you to see how you are doing. He is very inspirational with mathematics. Some lectures were a little hard to understand with his teaching methods, but he is very understanding and lots of extra credit is offered.
Professor Franz is an old quiet German man. You know that he knows a lot about what he's teaching, he is just ineffective at teaching it to you and keeping your attention. I basically taught myself all of the material in this class. He didn't really seem to know what was going on, and we would often sit in silence for minutes at a time. Strange.
A little bit of an accent, but is very nice and is willing to work with students on tests and due dates sometimes. Would take again.
Franz is an awesome guy. He really cares for his students. Over the course of the semester he'll learn your name, major and even a few things about you. He's an easy teacher as well, he grades very generously. Don't get behind cause calculus is not so easy. His lectures are hard to follow sometimes without looking at the chapter beforehand
Professor Franz is such a great guy. His lectures can be difficult to understand sometimes but he is willing to help out. He does not give a lot of homework and he gives an option for extra credit that can raise your grade if you do it. I am so glad I took his class. Math is difficult for me and he taught me well enough to pass Math 1050.
Professor Franz is a super easy professor. HE's clear and concise and really does love what he teaches. Show up, do what you're told, you'll be 100% fine.
He is a great teacher! He really cares about each student. He is hard to understand but a great teacher.
Professor Franz is the best math teacher I've had! He was very understanding, and offers extra credit in case you don't do well on the tests. He really wants his students to succeed, and I feel like he taught the material well. (Well enough for me to get a B, at least!)
Doctor Franz is a lovely person but a terrible teacher. He understands math VERY well, so well that he skips steps during problems and uses math shorthand and terms never taught before and expects that you know it. Could never really answer a question directly and needs to learn how to teach to non-math majors. Really nice though.
This professor is AMAZING He loves it when students participate in the lecture and will sometimes have a student teach for a day (only if they want to of course) He wants you to succeed and is always willing to talk about test questions. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Very, very few professors want you to succeed as much as Professor Franz does. He makes you work for your grade, but he gives you every opportunity to do your best, ex. if you do twice the amount of homework, he'll give you an extra 5% and he grades generously. You pretty much get a reward proportional to what effort you put in and then some.
Definitely does not teach to the level of a student. Rather, he explain things in very technical terms that only a PhD in Math would understand. Lectures are like watching paint dry because of this. Hard to follow. Hard to understand (old, accent). Look for test reviews, those are what saved me. Youtube, Khan, etc were my real teachers.
Franz is a very good man, and is very kind toward his students and cares very much. His teaching style wasn't my favorite, and he likes to use proof language. Since I took ODE's in the summer, and he doesn't normally teach that class, it was a little more difficult than it should've been, and I didn't learn as much either.
He is probably one of the nicest teachers I have had. However, he is not good at teaching. All he does in class is examples, but he is not that great at explaining them. This means I had to read out of the book to learn. Take him if you want a nice teacher. Do not take him if you actually want to learn. I heard he is the same for calculus classes.
Super nice old man, really wants you to understand math. Only grades off of about 5 tests, so no graded homework, attendance doesn't matter. Lecture heavy, very into jargon that only individuals who are sound in math will understand, and doesn't do a lot of examples using actual numbers on the board. Lots of studying on your own.
Professor Franz is one of the nicest professors I have ever had. He cares about each student, and if you reach out he is more than happy to help you understand better. The class is tough, and his teaching style takes a second to get used to. He focuses most of class on using examples to teach. Your grade is based on tests and homework.
Professor Franz made taking calculus enjoyable. He is a very sweet and caring man that wants you to succeed. Homework isn't mandatory, but you will want to do it all to do well on the tests. He is a generous grader and has extra credit options on every test for every test. I liked his class enough to take Calc 2 from him next semester!
He really does care about his students, but there are times where he goes too quick and is difficult to understand. The class is almost only graded on tests, which have partial credit for showing work. The class needs the textbook and if you don't do a lot of work outside of class you will not get a decent grade.
Great Professor! Professor Franz knows what he is doing and can really teach the materialjust make sure to stay awake and take lots of notes. He is very big on tests, and homework is mostly just so you know the material, but is worth a few points. Honesty is very important to him.
Absolutely loved him! He is pretty easy on grading because he wants to make sure you do well in class and pass. He is extremely caring and wants to make sure you succeed! I would attend class and pay attention because most of the tests are based off what he shows in class. The homework is meant to help you understand the material better.
He is a great person who really cares about his students. He offers some extra credit and helps you prepare somewhat for the tests. He will often fly through the material and not leave a ton of room for understanding. Find a study group for the class, you need one. Study guides were not super helpful for the tests. Very difficult but good class.
He is a good professor. He really knows his stuff. The class itself is difficult, but the professor doesn't make it harder. I think he makes it easier. Pretty easy going. Likes to joke around. Tests are short answer. Once you understand his teaching style and his accent its not bad.
Professor Franz definitely has his own teachings style that is may be hard to follow at the beginning. After the first test he got a feel for how much we knew and spent the whole semester trying to help us understand the material rather than going through the material. He cares about his students and will try to remember names. He's Great!
Very good professor! His German accent is a little hard to understand at first but once you get used to it, he can easily be understood. He is always willing to help if you don't understand something and offers extra credit to get your grade up. Tests are what your grade it made of so be prepared.
Probably my favorite math class I have ever taken. He really wants to see all his students succeed and pass. one bad test does not ruin your chances for a good grade he will work with you to make up credit from the test if you show you can learn and understand the materiel
Very nice and funny person. Knows his stuff. German accent but you can still understand what he is saying. expects you to know a lot of the pre req. stuff that I had to review again (algebra, trig). Homework not graded but doing it helps you do better on tests. he does random attendance quizzes for extra credit. I am signed up to take calc 2 w/him
Him and his teaching is above level 1 calc and the problems on the test are out- rageous
I LOVED this professor. He is extremely kind , understanding, and is one of my favorite professors. I had to adjust to the way he taught. He focuses a lot on proofs, so the homework is where I learned to apply theorems and compute problems. He offers a ton of extra credit! If you do the homework and read the book you'll do good in the class.
Professor Franz is one of the nicest teachers I've ever had. Whatever he lacked in teaching, he made up for in how nice he was. He really wanted each of us to learn the material. There is quite a bit of homework you need to in order to keep up, but that should be expected in a 5 credit class. You will definitely have to teach yourself some though.
He has an accent, super nice guy, hard to understand. I didn't show up to a single class after the first class. Instead I watched Professor Leonard's lectures on YouTube and he covered the exact material on the same schedule we were on in class, I got 100 on every exam and got an A in the class. Do the HW. He offers Extra Credit. Professor Leonard.
I took his summer class, very very easy. Didnt make you turn in any homework, take home tests. I left not truly grasping the concepts but left with an A in the class. Would take again, but he was pretty hard to actually learn from, very nice guy
Our homework was graded on completion, but you have no idea if you did any of it correctly not helping you prepare for the tests. He made some typos on a test or two making it extremely difficult to solve the problems. Never had interaction with him, he got behind posting his lecture videos and made up for it by posting assignments during breaks.
He has a accent that can be hard to understand but he is a really good teacher and i likeed him and would take a class from him again
Professor Franz is German. This makes understanding difficult. But don't worry, bc you won't be watching any of his lectures to actually learn. Barely covers topics, then presents test with nearly impossible questions a beginning calculus student can accomplish. Do yourself a favor and wait to take calculus in person, and don't take it from Franz.
Honestly, a nightmare. Here is how his course is structured: 1) He gives you the lecture video 2) He assigns homework with questions that he doesnt even teach you how to do in class 3) Does not grade homework upon being correct but upon completion which is okay, BUT he does not give the answers to the homework questions so you learn bad habits
Prof. Franz was a super nice and caring guy. Always there to help and gave out plenty of extra credit. Problem was his teaching style just did NOT register with me at all, so I had to learn on youtube. But his online class tests are open textbook, so he makes it possible to succeed. If you're okay kinda teaching yourself I recommend his class.
Professor Franz is a very kind man who is accessible and generous in grading. If your learning style doesn't match with his teaching I would recommend watching other lectures on Youtube to learn material. If you struggle with Calculus in person like me or need to take it online I would recommend this class in a heartbeat. Tests are open textbook.
This is the kind of course I wish wasn't required, considering what I payed for was a series of prerecorded lectures and not much else. There were homework assignments, but they weren't graded individually and had no answer sheet provided. As a result, I often had no clue whether I was doing the problems correctly or not.
Great professor! Lots of extra credit! I bought the textbook and the ANSWER KEY online for $40 each. He used textbook questions he didn't assign as homework for exam questions (with a little variation). And he gives partial credit for questions you get wrong! Watch professor Lenard on YouTube and you'll do great!
I took this class in a summer semester so it was in half the time. The work was not too hard, the problem was the professors lectures did not really teach me how to do the work. I taught myself from YouTube. The test are open book and take at home.
I had Calc 1 online with Mogilski, but Reinhard is not as good. Your only grades are take home tests with crazy difficult questions. He has 1.5 hr lecture videos that are too slow to listen to but playing it fast you'll miss something. The text book is overwhelmingly detailed. Teaching yourself is more work than you think. But he is nice.
Professor Franz is awesome. He does have a thick accent but all of his lecture notes are clear and easy to read. He is super kind, always asks if we have enough time to complete the exams and will adjust accordingly to our answers. Really cares about his students, take all of your calc classes from him if you can. 10/10 would recommend.
By far one of the best Math Professors at UVU. He is very kind and understanding. Yes, his lectures do take a little to get to use to (his accent kind of throws things off, and his notes are in mostly readable calligraphy.) Homework is doable. Tests are worth about 90% of your grade but he makes them very doable. He is eager to help you!
Professor Franz is truly amazing. He's so accommodating and considerate. He is super good with drop-in office hours and giving you the help when you need it. His accent can be a bit of a challenge at the beginning, but he speaks clearly, and it just takes a bit to get used to.
His recorded lectures didn't click for me, so Prof Leonard and OChem Tutor on YouTube did the most teaching. Tests often had problems harder than what we practiced, but they were take-home. Homework was 10% of grade and is worth the pts: wouldn't have an A without it. Free textbook w/ odd answer key was nice. If you can't get someone else, he's ok.
Was very nice and lenient with exam turn-ins.
Sweetest man who does all he can to grade with students in mind and take care of people. He has been really helpful in communication, and I have taken 2 classes from him and always recommend him. Gives time for the test and lays out the class schedule. Absolutely, get into his classes!
I took Dr. Franz's class in fall 2024, he is willing to help with any questions, provides feedback, and if you put in the time to practice the homework and take notes from the lecture- then you have everything that will be on the exams. Note that his class is graded by the exams mostly, the homework is only worth a small percentage.
I was really nervous to take this course, but Professor Franz made the material very approachable. He gives lots of resources to learn in different ways and he is incredibly kind. I appreciated how committed he is to helping us succeed in the class and offered help regularly throughout the semester. Highly recommend him.
Dr. Franz is very nice. I found that his lectures were useful but they were so boring and I struggled paying attention. He has optional hw, you can get extra credit, I recommend doing the hw so you learn the material. Your grade is based off of three tests which are open note and textbook. Just takes notes, reat the textbook, and do hw, youll pass.
