Hilarious and great at teaching. The material is sometimes a bit dense, but he is very clear, provides great notes, and is just interesting to listen to. The projects and exams can be very hard if you fall behind (if you're not good at C programming, you will have to learn, but optional discussions help a lot).

Going to repeat what others have said: best professor in the dept. hands down, and would be a serious contestant for best teacher on campus. Clear, concise, engaging lecturer, very helpful in office hours, and always ready with a joke. The projects and exams are difficult, but never overwhelming. Take this class!

Favorite CS professor i've had. His lectures are clear and useful and the programming assignments are very helpful to learn the material. He is also writing the course textbook, which is clear and very helpful and will always be available free

Okay, everyone knows Remzi is the best. But taking Starting a Software Company with him is a different experience from OS. Phenomenal teacher who more or less, demands you start thinking outside the box to be successful. Highly, highly recommend.

Hands down best professor in the CS department. Maybe best at the University. Had to change the way the COW award was given because he was winning it too much. Speaks very clearly and makes sure everyone knows whats going on before advancing onto new topics. I recommend every CS major take at least one class with Remzi here.

If you take a CS course in Madison, you can't miss his class. Excellent lectures and great jokes, great projects and loose due times, great TAs and --- great & free textbook! His delivery is just fantastic that you will want to come to class for a two hour per week and refresh your mind. Awesome! Simply awesome!

One of the best professors on campus. His lectures are very engaging and funny. This actually makes you want to go to class for a change. He's also reasonable and understanding with deadlines. I highly recommend taking a class with him. Also, his textbook is probably the best written CS textbook I've ever seen.

Best professor I've ever had. He's hilarious, made the 3 hour lectures go by fast. Records lecture, so you can watch on Youtube later. Doesn't make you buy the textbook, he provides you with the pages, also he wrote the textbook. Hands down the best professor at UW-Madison

This man is amazing, every lecture was a treat, and I had 3 hour lectures, literal god of a teacher. His class is hard, its not easy at all but its all worth it, if you get the chance to have Professor Remzi, DO NOT MISS THE OPPURUTUNITY.

Nice person, but he did a very bad job at managing exams and hw grading. Too much vagueness in the exam actually once led him to accept multiple answers for those questions. Horrendous job at grading our hw in time and the rubric was never clear, which I think it was completely unfair for many of the assignments. A waste of tuition and a disaster.

Remzi's isn't necessarily an easy professor, and there will be some projects and test that will leave you frustrated, but I can safely say he's the best teacher I've had the pleasure of learning under. During this class I figured out that I don't even really like operating systems, but still I somehow enjoyed learning and listening to his lectures.

Remi is a nice guy, but hes a really terrible professor. This semester he just seemed to be too packed with his tasks as the chair of the department. I heard Bart Miller teaches way better than he does

By far the best lecturer I've had at Madison, and by far the best CS course . A ton of work, but all interesting. More than fair as far as regrades on projects or tests, as well as extensions on nearly every project's deadline. 100% take a class with him if you get the chance. Read OSTEP if you take this course, it will help a ton.

No idea how my fellow classmates are giving Remzi such bad reviews this semester. By far the best CS professor and lecturer I have had at UW. Yes there is some vagueness in the overall course grade but you can easily gauge how you're doing. Also the fact that he gave us an extension on almost EVERY project, something unheard of in CS. Take him.

Hands down one of the best professors I've had. Like most others have mentioned, Remzi gave us generous extensions on almost all projects. Although it does take a great deal of effort to do the projects, you should be fine as long as you don't procrastinate. Don't miss your opportunity to take Remzi's class!

The professor spent lecture time explaining things (badly) that were tangentially related to the course and when asked a question about something actually important would laugh at you and tell you to read the book. No wonder every project got an extension; he didn't explain how to do projects until the day they were due.

Remzi made one of the hardest CS course (presumably according to my advisors and peers) the easiest CS course I have taken. He explained the concepts so well that you don't even need to read the textbook. He wrote the textbook and is published for free (and is being used by 100+ unis across the GLOBE). He's generous in scoring and listen to student

This class has a lot of stuff, and it's definitely not easy. But I really enjoy prof Remzi's lectures and his advices, he is so far from being 1/5. Maybe he can do a better job this semester, but he is still the best professor I met.

It was very hard and when I went to hisoffice hours he wouldn't show up. I never understood him in class and I would ask questions, but still would never understand. He is a nice guy, but not a very good teacher.

Remzi is the best professor I've had at UW. His sense of humor may not click with everyone, but I personally found his lectures both entertaining and informative. The book (Google "OSTEP") is readable, expands upon his lectures, and more than sufficiently covers the content on the exams. A solid understanding of C is important for the projects.

Most 1/5 ratings here are simply not true. He is very accessible outside class and cares about students. When I reached out for a time collision with his office hour, he immediately opened another one. Very accessible through email as well. Reply to emails incredibly fast. Also the best lecturer I have had at UW, made hard content very accessible

Remzi is the guy. The best. Definitely a professor I'll remember having and enjoying long after college. Gave great lectures. The only textbook that I've ever looked forward to reading and learned a lot from (he also wrote it, and it's free). So happy I took the class with him.

Ignore all negative reviews. OS requires a lot of self learning, that's the nature of 500 level course. Remzi is really inspirational in class, and really tries to test your code in projects. You do become a much better programmer through his class. And he's funny too. I don't understand why people are mad when they don't understand the first time.

Pros: He's a smart guy and really knows what he's talking about. Cons: He doesn't know how to teach it. He doesn't explain things very well, flies thru lectures, and gives poor examples that don't translate to the projects. Somehow I did well on his tests after teaching myself. If you're taking his class learn to teach yourself

Don't take this professor whatever you do. Lectures are straight out of textbook and he doesn't know how to communicate information. Technical difficulty every day, sometimes it's his pencil, sometimes it's his ipad, which shows how unprepared he is. If you do take this class and you're not a grad student, expect a C. Extremely disorganized lecture

Remzi is a fantastic lecturer. I could feel the mental knots in my brain (of half-baked understanding and conceptual misconceptions) untangling every lecture. This was by far the most valuable CS course i've taken, and Remzi is extremely accommodating and helpful, and maintains an amazing class atmosphere to keep his students engaged.

Very tough projects with very little time and insructions to complete them. Final was supposed to be cumulative but it only tested the last piece of the class. What a complete waste of my stduying time. He should start taking his class more seriously, he spends most of the time joking around in class like that hopelessly loud train outside

Don't ever pass up a chance to take up a class with Remzi, no matter the subject. Genuinely cares about teaching, and sets challenging yet doable assignments which really clear up the material. The class probably isn't suitable for those who aren't willing/able to put the work in, as obvious in some of the other reviews.

While Prof AD understands the material well and explains it ok, he is unapproachable outside of class and is very unhelpful if you have questions on your project grades. Good course but he is very unhelpful. One time he rudely laughed at my question and I couldn't go to his office after that

the most unfair grading I've had in my 5 years of college. Gets defensive when students aren't understanding the assignment. Forget trying to get a good grade on the performance based assignments. I implemented threads for the concurrency project yet somehow I got worse grade than those who didn't even implement threading. That makes total sense.

He's the worst professor I ever had. First of all you can't understand a single word he says. He never explains what he does and expects us to know everything before class. In the first day of class, he directly starts to teach programming without telling us what or why he used those commands in the first place!!!!. He goes off topic all the time!!

He is a good teacher and a nice person. However, his class was not well organized this semester. He canceled almost all discussion sessions and used videos from previous years instead. There were also long delays in releasing grades with confusing grading criteria for some assignments. Final exam grades were never announced ...

The BEST cs prof I've ever had! He has such a charming character and his lectures are amazing and intuitive, he makes OS actually fun to learn. However, you do have to put in the work. He also makes changes to teaching schedules and homework deadlines to our benefit. I personally haven't read the textbook and I got an A. Definitely recommend!

Great prof who is really good at condensing material into the lectures along side live examples and chances to figure things out on your own. He also wrote the world-standard textbook for the class. Hardest part are the projects, but if you start as soon as they are announced, you will get 100 on them. Also the textbook is nice, but not necessary.

I don't really understand the hype for Remzi here, but his classes are just mediocre at his best. Yes, OSTEP is good but his lectures, assignments, and exams are unbelievably unorganized compared to other CS professors. Would recommend his book, but not his class.

Not only is he very skill and knowledgeable about CS and his courses in general he also wants his students to learn and cares for them. His lectures miss a lot of important information and will just tell us to read his book. So get ready to read them! His homework is insanely hard, almost impossible at times. My friend and I spent 30 hours on one. Very dry material. He's willing to meet with students though but tends to get into cringy boomer humor.

Remzi is great at telling jokes and has a good sense of humor. I highly recommend his lectures to get entertained. However, when it comes to teaching, he is just like other OS professors with no big difference. He can also be very condescending during office hours which I found really annoying.

I legit don't understand Remzi's negative reviews. OS is a tough class with complex topics and long projects. But this man is hilarious with engaging lectures. He and his wife literally wrote the OS book. Only complaint is that he didn't keep his TAs on top of releasing projects (and their tests) and giving grades back on time. Get Remzi for OS.

Remzi is good at teaching, but his projects are awful. 1-> unclear, vague project description. 2-> unresponsible TA who often responds in Piazza with wrong answers for projects. 3 -> an extremely heavy project in the final weeks. Clarification on an important point in this project comes after 5 days of release so we have to modify our code a lot.

OS is going to be a tough course no matter who you take it with, but Remzi knows the material like the back of his hand. His lectures are really fun and the textbook his wife and him wrote is very easy to understand. His office hours were accessible and he was able to answer any question I had easily and kindly. I highly recommend him as a prof.

He is fine at teaching. In class, he comes across as quite showy, often sharing good jokes, but it seems these traits only scratch the surface. If you visit his office hours, you may find that he can be rather shallow and condescending.
