I really enjoyed having her, she made biology interesting and fun. Also, she gives a printout of her notes and slides so you can take your own next to them in class.
Wonderful, I learned a lot. I highly recommend her. Her teaching style is very helpful and she makes it easy to learn the difficult material.
A very helpful teacher, with a clear desire to teach her students. The class was a little difficult because it was hybrid, but when we were in lab, she did a great job of making sure we were all on track.
She's a great lady and loves to teach and does it VERY well. She understands that things happen in life, and she is willing to help. Great teacher...even though its a hard class. I worked my butt off for an "A," but I feel GOOD about my "A." I'd recommend her to ANYONE!

this is an AMAZING CLASS! rene loves her students and understands that life happens! she is clear and wants to help you! work hard and you will do very well!

Rene is full of knowledge. Seems genuinely interested in making the class enjoyable. She is slighlty distracted due to many other bligations. Sometimes grading gets behind and she is not easily accessible. Might just be this time. I am looking forward to taking her for Micro. I love that she still gets excited about the topic!
really a great teacher, but returns graded assignments very slowly also her test questions are odd in comparison to the material???
Rene is awesome and super helpful. Her class is challenging, but she is not unreasonable in her grading or expectations. I am really looking forward to taking her again for micro.
Rene is a very nice lady. That being said, her lecture and the book hit one level, the test questions hit an entirely different level. Test questions are unclear, she wants a specific answer to a broad question so you loose points. Still haven't graded most of our stuff and it's almost the end of the quarter. That isn't acceptable at all.
Very unorganized. Most of our stuff has not been graded and given back and it's the end of the quarter. Test questions are very poorly written, not clear AT ALL. Actually likes the test averages to be in the Mid C range! Can't ever get her for office time, doesn't make micro students a priority at all. Don't take her.
I signed up for modern disease thinking it would be fun. WOW was I wrong. There is constant busy work, she never graded anything, and if you asked her about it she'd go off on you saying how she was too busy. Maybe she should teach less. There was no hope in knowing how you did on things so basically everyone averaged about a C on tests. DONT TAKE!
Rene is an amazing teacher! Very clear in her explanations of the material. Very clear in her expectations of the students for each assignment! Tests are hard because she expects you to use critical thinking to determine the answer... just what we need to do to be successful outside the classroom! I would recommend her to anyone, she's great!
The class has ended four day ago and there are still assignments from the third week of class that have not been graded. It was impossible to calculate how you were doing in this class. Hopefully this is not normal and the instructor was simply overloaded this quarter.
Great teacher really made the subject clear and understandable. She was hard in the way she made us think about the subject matter and apply it, but that is what learning is all about. I would highly recommend taking her class.
Rene is a very nice and sweet instructor. She will help you anytime you need. Overall the class has 4 exams (no final) and some online quizzes, prelabs and labs and icliker questions, and thats it. If you study well for her exams, u should do good. Rene makes bio interesting and understandable. take her.
Very unorganized. It was the end of the quarter and I had to track her down to get a stack of work back from her, some that had not even been graded yet. Her lectures are very confusing, and she does not spend enough time lecturing on exam material. Bounces around from chapter to chapter in the book. Not a great teacher. Would not recommend!
She is nice enough, but procrastinates on getting work back in a timely manner and cancelled class multiple days-- enough so we didn't cover everything we needed to and quickly went over important information for tests that we should have spent more time on. Would not recommend.
WORST instructor ever. She was always late or would miss class and have random subs. Unorganized. We got back 4 assignments before the last week of class. Her quizes are not what she teaches. BAD BAD BAD Instructor!
I found Renee to be a very helpful instructor! She didn't always get things graded quickly, but she was always very approachable and showed enthusiasm for what she was teaching. Many instructors could careless about you once you left their classroom, however Renee was always interested in how I was doing, even after I was no longer her student.
Renee is very nice and knowledgable about microbiology. Her lectures are interesting and clear, and she's good at providing extra help if you're confused on anything. She takes a long time to grade assignments, though, and has missed class a few times. I know she's writing a book so that may be why she's spread so thin. Overall she's a good teacher
Very interesting class but there was trouble with online homeworking being opened, reviewable, and graded. More lectures would have helped, but prof was good at explaining things. Slow in grading, some absences. Lots of homework, some seemed redundant. Learned a lot though!
Lectures were clear and interesting even though the subject is difficult. Prof missed 10% of classes and at the end of the quarter there were still ten reports and the term paper ungraded. I have no idea what my grades were on those papers. Very unfair. I feel that she broke her promises stated on the syllabus to the students. Wouldn't recommend.
She virtually disappeared for the last week before grades were posted. The last day to turn in our final papers, she didn't show up on campus until 12:20 with wet hair and one of her kids in tow. The papers were due at 12:00 or considered late! Very unprofessional. She called in sick four times, only once arranging for a sub. Never answered emails
Love her. My favorite biology teacher so far :) her test are extremely hard but she is fun and funny and handles labs very well.
She is a great person, helpful, but her tests are extremely hard. Her lectures are great but the tests questions are too broad. A students are lucky to get a B in the class. Would not take her.
Rene is a very knowledgeable instructor and she explains her lectures very well. I enjoyed the labs... learned a lot from the labs & practicals:) Exams were very difficult.. not straight from the text, you gotta understand the material and apply that knowledge on case studies. Overall, she was a lot of fun and very helpful - just ask! Recommended!
She's really nice and willing to help students stay on track with the class. The only thing I had trouble with was following the assignments just because she's not very clear. If you don't check the online side every day w/plenty of time to get the homework done you'll have a hard time in the class. Just make sure you have time and your good.
Dr. Kratz is an awesome teacher! It's not an easy class to begin with, but if you put in the time, you should pull a good grade! If you're having trouble, she's extremely helpful and will work with you until you have a good understanding. She explains everything in an interesting way, I definitely recommend!
Rene is a great instructor. Clear, knows her stuff, always willing to help a student. Yeah, the tests are hard but she really works to prepare you. I would take any class she offered.
Rene is by far the best professor I have had so far. She is very approachable, and doesn't get annoyed from her students asking questions, like alot of other professors do. I would definitely recommend her! Im glad women like her decided to teach.
You need to understand the material for you to do well. She was very helpful in lab also. My biggest complaint is she doesn't grade on time. It took over 1.5 weeks to get our tests back, and we only got 4 of our labs back, the rest were graded after the final. She ran out of time to grade everything, so just gave us full credit on the last few labs
She is 1 of the best instructors i have ever had, always willing to help students to understand and learn the material and the E-Z micro book she wrote is so easy to understand and read. She mades learning fun and interesting and she's always so full of life!!! so fab!!
She's a very sweet woman and happy to help. I had two issues though: 1. She doesn't get your work back to you, so you don't really get to figure out how she grades, and 2. Her test questions are ridiculously hard, and sometimes not covered in the lectures, book, or online material. I like her but don't think it's fair to withhold homework.
Rene is very knowledgeable on what she teaches, but her class is very hard. I would say it is more than twice the workload of any class I have ever taken at EVCC. Test questions are hard and vague and may not even necessarily be covered in the material.. You have to come to your own conclusions based off what you have learned and hope for the best.
Rene is smart and seems to be passionate about what she teaches, but I felt that this class was just too hard. This class has more work than any other class I've taken. The tests are VERY hard and highly based on lectures more than anything. The questions are tricky and vague and could have multiple answers.
My favorite science teacher by far. Very approachable, and explains things so well if you do not understand. She is an awesome teacher, and down to earth. Not the easiest, but worth it, learned so much!
She is a horrible teacher, if you have the chance to take it with another professor, I suggest you do so. She assigns an unreasonable workload. And I can handle a tough workload, I got an A in Anatomy & Phys. She does not get back to your emails, or grade your work for weeks. Horrible class, I was miserable all quarter.
I took her bio class online, and it's definitely not an easy class to take online. Heavy workload, and she didn't reply to my emails. Some deadlines are from previous quarters, so it can be kind of confusing. She updated grades maybe twice in the quarter. That was stressful.
I took bio 105 class online and the class is very hard. 3-4 assessments, 1 quiz, 1 discussion board every week. Lots of material. This assessment and quizzes are not easy at all. She also doesn't grade the work very quickly
Tough, her tests are brutal, her labs are stressful, but all in all it was all worth it.She makes her students work hard,as she should since most are pre-nursing students who are going to be put in tough and uncomfortable situations later in RN school. She's very available to her students(lacking in email though),even offers her lunch break to meet!
Does not grade. It is frustration and extremely hard to determine how you are doing in the course as she doesn't update grades until the course is over.
Would not recommend! She missed a lot of days. Doesn't grade until the end of the quarter. Doesn't answer e-mails. She grades very tough, even though she doesn't teach the material. As a person-great lady. As a professor-unreliable and inconsistent.
This class was very tough but it is made that way to prepare you for future classes you will have to take, such as in Nursing School. Her Exams are extremely tough, so do not slack off. She assigns a lot of work so be prepared and don't fall behind. She explains things well but it takes her forever to grade assignments.
Though Dr. Kratz's life was pretty crazy when she taught my class, I still learned so much! She is a woman of science and it's awesome! She is an instructor who cares about learning. The emphasis on complex lab work in the class was fascinating and challenging. If you have a passion for science you will enjoy her class, though it can be stressful.
Would not recommend as a professor. Rene is an amazing women and is a very nice person, but she does not grade most assignments until a few weeks after you did them and does not take into consideration that most community college students have jobs. This class had the most homework I've ever had in a non math 100 level class.
Took it in a "Learning Community" arrangement so I also took it with Chem121 Don't need the textbook unless you want to clarify something she said during her lectures. Lectures are recorded so you can listen to it at home. Tests are based on the lecture. Took proper notes? you're good. Enncourages to talk to her when in need of help.
She is a harsh grader despite your best efforts to ask her, what she is looking for and working hard on it. Her exams are not by the book so be ready to read between the lines, as far as the exams go because they are completely irrelevant to one another. I love MICROBIOLOGY but she made me hate it the whole Quarter. I would NOT take her again.
Lectures were boring and there was too many in-class activities and small group discussions that no one wanted to do. Most of the work was online and it took hours every night just to watch all the video clips and listen to the podcasts alone. There was online quizzes about EVERYTHING. Way too much work. The most miserable not math class I've taken
Online prelabs and exams are very difficult. Labs are interesting, but a lot of work. She records her lectures so you can go back and watch online whenever you want, which is cool. Rene is a nice person and is passionate about Microbiology, but not an easy A(or even B).
I have mixed reviews. Rene is nice and very smart and has an obvious passion for microbiology. But I have a few issues. One is grading everything on time. She withheld most of our assignments until the end of the quarter. One of our big projects, 'The Unknown' didn't even get put onto canvas so none of us got to see how we did. Tests are very hard.
Rene is very passionate about biology! Those that complain probably never asked for help, you will do well if you are committed and get in the habit of getting everything done. SLOW grader. Online was 4ish assignments, 2-3 annotated lectures, DF, & quiz every week. Two books & the midterm & final were a test and an essay. I learned a lot!
The best way to study for this class is to attend lectures, really try on the clicker questions, print her power points , go home and listen to her lecture recordings, do her practice problems, && go into her office hours when you need help. For the unknown project type up your report as you go, start with sugar fermentation tests if applicable
Good class with a very organized workload which helps get all the work done better. Not an easy class necessarily but the teacher is nice.
Rene is a really tough teacher. Expect a lot of work, difficult prelab quizzes (that she assigns LAST MINUTE) Exams are brutal, her office hours are always full. Don't skip lectures, she has clicker questions. She's honestly the worst teacher I had and everyone struggled.
Tests are multiple choice BUT all critical thinking For pre-lab quizzes, read lab WELL before taking quiz Labs were long and most of the time, you are working on more than one lab unknown prepping stuff for next lab so dont expect to leave early on lab days Start unknown beginning of quarter write along the way don't procrastinate the unknown
Good class, spend the time reading outbreaks and studying and you will do well. Class felt easily accessible. Lectures are put online and i found that very helpful.
I took this class during spring 16, was a very difficult class. Tests are multiple choices based mostly on critical thinking and lecture aren't helpful in repairing students for the test. Read the book to really understand the it along with her lecture or visit her office our as much as you can.
Do not take any classes with this professor, she does not respond to emails in the time period that she states in her syllabus. The amount of work that she assigns is unrealistic. She also seems very unorganized when posting assignments. Stay away, find another instructor. I would not recommend this instructor on my worst enemy. I give a her a zero
The class is very interesting, but the assessments are all based off of articles and movies online that you have to watch, on top of her lectures and all of the reading (from four books.) The assessments are very non-specific, and even if you fill out the worksheet that is supposed to be filled out before the assessment is taken, it isn't enough.
Good professor, her lectures are pretty organized. Sometimes she replies to inquiries after a deadline, rendering her advice useless and she assigns ALOT of homework. I took her online class, which means she tended to leave assignments ungraded, which is frustrating. And the discussions are bad but the class, is pretty easy if you do the work.
I thought the class itself was interesting, as I love Biology. The class is pretty organized through Canvas. Unfortunately, the communication is poor. Don't expect a message back if you have a question. The way she grades is horrible, as she does it when it's the end of the quarter. You will have no clue if you were doing something wrong.
An awesome professor! The online class was very organized. It was very clear what you needed to read for each assignment. The labs were interesting and simple enough to understand. I love Biology so this was an enjoyable class.
This is her first class teaching Botany and she was terrible. Missed class, didn't know the material herself and used trick questions. This is an easy class made difficult by her lack of caring.
This review is for ETHNOBOT, her 1st Q teachjng it--it shows heavily!! She's disorganized, constantly changing the schedule, doesn't grade anything (It's finals week and more than half our work isn't graded yet), the labs are bullocks, study guides don't represent what's on the test, she's nearly impossible to get a hold of... the list goes on!!
It's only half way through the quarter and I feel obligated to share my experience. There is a ridiculous amount of homework. It seems as though she is overcompensating for it being an online class. If you're like me and have to take a bio, find a different professor. If there isn't another option, be ready to spend 20+ hrs/week!
Rene is very passionate about her field. I took this course during the summer along w/ 2 other intense courses. This course did have more assignments than a regular online course. It's doable if you manage your time wisely. There are 3-4 assignments, 10+ hrs of reading, discussion, and a quiz per week. There are 2 essays and 2 exams. Work for it.
Difficult course, no matter the instructor you will need to put in a lot of work. Kratz is knowledgeable and loves biology. There are in-class participation questions and she is really good about explaining any concepts you have questions about in class. Takes a bit longer than most to grade. With effort and engagement you'll be golden.
I am halfway thru my last quarter for my AA and although I have so far carried a 3.87 GPA I am honestly not sure I will pass this class. The information is fascinating but there are an outrageous number of assignments that are not even available to see until Monday of the week due. I have taken 10 credit classes that were less work than this class.
Syllabus from prior year was given. When questioned for real dates she was defensive. Online format with heavy busywork assignments which most remain ungraded. I have spent more study time in this class than any other. She is slow to respond to questions or post her lectures. Frustrating when she extends due date after deadline.
I'm Halfway through the quarter and it feels as if I am drowning in assignments. You really expect me to read 100+ pages a week, watch your lectures, and do all 10 assignments you have posted? try grading some stuff it would be nice to know my actual grade.
Nice teacher, horrible class design. 7 assignments a week each with outside sources (hour long lectures) that don't work half the time. Sporadic grading, but will change your grade if you email her asking about why you got a question wrong. Overall, too much work that is accompanied by inconsistent sources and minimal grading. Take a diff class.
Ridiculous amount of content for an online class. 6+ hours of videos each week not to mention about 7-10 assignments on average and 10+ hours of reading. So much more than you'd ever be doing in a regular class.
Do not take a class from this professor. She gives an unreasonable amount of homework, and I don't say that lightly. Every assignment has a sub list of its own assignments. I am a straight A student, but this class was the hardest class I have ever taken. It is easy to spend more than 15 hours a week doing homework for this class.
She is the SLOWEST grader. She graded nothing until after finals and my grade dropped a whole letter and I didnt get an opportunity to fix it. She hadnt graded my midterm by the time I took my final. Half of the links to materials didnt work and the worksheets werent the same as the modules. She doesnt respond in a timely manner.
Four weeks into class instructed half by Rene and half another instructor. People in class who have had both before say frustrating aspects come from Rene. Poor study guides, lazy grading, oversimplified explanations. Disorganized, buries assignments in Canvas, makes them hard to find. Even other instructor seems unhappy with her at times.
Rene made the class pay 15 dollars for a program to answer questions during lecture, instead of using something like surveymonkey to poll us, and we've used it once in 8 weeks, AFTER we had to pay for it. She's incredibly defensive and blames students for failing when she obfuscates content to artificially make class more difficult.
This class was way harder than I anticipated. Tons of homework. Three reading quizzes & problem sets every week. There are 60 question study guides to complete every two weeks, & a big exam, plus a practice quiz. The one plus is that there was no final, but this class was tough. She does offer help if asked and her problem sessions saved my grade.
Homework does not help your grade at al. Tests are 50% of your overall grade. The study guides do not line up with test material. Average test scores for the class as a whole were typically in the 50's. It is a lot of work that does not raise your grade. Worst class I've taken in my life. Do not take this class.
I have never experience more homework than I have in this class. There's so much homework that I feel like I have no time to study! I will not take this teacher again. Not necessarily because of how much work she requires, but because the sheer volume of work required inhibited me from really learning anything. It was just a rush against the clock.
sooo much homework... This is definitely not a class you can skate by in.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! Rene is such a hard grader!!! She assigns 5 45min-1hr assignments a week, and when you get to the end of the quarter you have a 5-page essay due that she gives a terrible outline for and no real help on. It's almost impossible to do well in, let alone enjoy this class if ur also doing full-time + stuff outside of school
This professor does not grade in a timely matter, ignores emails, last week of class and currently have 31 assignments not graded, I have no idea where my grade stands.
Prof. Fester is a very passionate teacher, but don't take Global Ethnobotany if you have 2 other heavy-duty classes. She assigns enough work to cover 2 classes rather than one, and on top of that she doesn't keep up with her grading. It's November and she hasn't finished grading work from September. Good news is the textbook is an accessible novel.
By the time I took my final, assignments from 2 months prior were not graded. Assignments that were graded had little to no feedback. For the entirety of the quarter, I had no clue where I stood in the class or if I was learning the concepts. Actual content of the course content is not very difficult. Lots of homework. Term project.
Rene is absolutely the best professor I have ever had. She is truly passionate about what she teaches. Her depth of knowledge and decades of teaching experience allow her to explain high level concepts so simply and concisely that a 3rd grader could understand it. I have never had a professor with such complete and up-to-date knowledge.
I had no idea where I was in the class or if I was learning these concepts. The course content is not very difficult, but there is a lot of homework. Rene Fester is an unfair professor. I do not recommend taking BIO260 with this particular teacher.
I would never take this class again. She doesn't reply to emails it normally takes her at least 2 or 3 days or just doesn't reply. I have no idea where I stand in this class because she hasn't graded 29 of my assignments and it's almost the end of the quarter. Lots of assignments. I don't recommend this class.
I would never take this class again. She doesn't reply to emails it takes about 2 or 3 days or she doesn't reply. I have no idea where I stand in this class because I have 29 ungraded assignments she hasn't graded. There's lots of homework and at least 3 or more assignment due Sundays. I will never take this class again. I don't recommend!
She's passionate abt her own teaching and your learning and genuinely wants you to understand even tho I feel lost just bc it's retention heavy. Lots of paper handouts and very repetitive and takes a long time to grade stuff not on canvas but overall love her class and makes labs fun by engaging herself. Grades mostly made up of labs + exams
Avoid this class if you can - the workload is heavy and the professor is unresponsive. However, the textbook is an accessible novel. Consider using Unstuck AI and other resources to stay on top of assignments since the professor falls behind on grading.
Took this as an online course and she didn't grade anything until finals week.
She was ok, We did a lot of in-class practice, but there wasn't really a lecture. We did get to use 2 pages of notes for each exam, but no one really felt like they knew what they were doing.
Amazing professor! Doesn't heavily lecture, mostly small group work "POGILs" and then checking with the whole class. Super kind and caring for the students, will talk to you outside of class hours and responds extremely quickly. Grading is very clear, though slow at times. Highly recommend her for beginning the biology series. Would 100% take again
Took 2 classes with Rene, kind and very supportive in the in-person class but difficult and distant in the online one. 2 books to buy too, one is cheaper than the other but one of the books was a poor choice - very repetitive and LONG chapters that were not always relevant. Extremely slow on grading. Poor feedback. Nice grace period for late work.
An okay class, lots and lots of good information and some assignments were really interesting. Lots of labs and you cannot miss more than two. I am unsure what my grade is currently which is giving me anxiety since it is the last week of classes. A lot of work but if you have the time and are interested in botany it is worth taking imo.
tight workframe and unreasonable amounts of homework
Professor René Fester clearly has a passion for biology, the lectures are simple and the assignments have detailed instructions. Weekly labs, discussions, quizzes and plenty of assignments. Do not reccomend if you have a tight schedule.
