She's Crazy! But she knows what she's talking about, and she will talk with you individually, and she's open to criticism.
Best math teacher I've had so far. Fair on tests and quizes. I want to take all my math classes with her.
shes nice
The best math teacher I ever had! She really cares about how she can present the material in a way the students actually understand. For once math wasn't torture.
I took the online stats class. It was hard, but any stats class is. As long as you keep up with your work and try to understand the material you will do well. I feel behind on a lot of the homeworks, but studied hard and still got a b. The class is do-able. Enjoyed Rene very much. She is very helpful and is available to help you in person if needed
I took the online class which was difficult, but doable. Rene is extremely accessible through Webct and expect in the beginning homework twice a week and quizzes following it (60 mins).Homework is first come, first served, so whenever she posts the hw first person who logs in first gets choice of any problem (I dont like it).Midterm n cumul. Final
The best math teacher I have ever had. Explains why everything works the way it does unlike other math teachers who throw a formula and say "There's the formula use it." Very helpful and really cares about students.
She's really helpful and a great math teacher. She cares about the students really getting the math, she will help you all you want. Just do all the homework and listen to her and you will do fine.
Stats itself is hard. Stats online is even harder. Ms. Sporer was extremely helpful. She was very responsive to emails and answered all questions posted. There are online quizzes every two or three chapters and the homework is done by posting a problem and explaining it. The class is hard but Ms. Sporer will help if you ask for it.
At first i didnt know what to thinkg of mrs. Sporer and then i felt like she hated me so the class wasnt all that interesting but towards the end of the semester i really liked her and would deff. say she is a good teacher just a little hard to understand and def. a hard class
Rene' is an excellent teacher. Her lectures are crystal clear and the book, which she wrote, is very easy to follow. The homework is optional and minimal (about 15-29 problems a week *which is nothing for a math class). Tests are exactly like the hw. She is very helpful in class, math lab, or office hours. I don't recommend anyone else for stats.
Pretty easy class. She explains everything in class pretty well. HW is optional and no one really does it. Tests are just like class/HW. She even offers extra credit. Very approachable and truely wants you to understand it. Material isn't too bad for this class.
She is Awesome. I was not so thrilled about taking stats. Well at first I like she was going to be mean. As long as you put in the work and she knows you try she is more than flexible. She is one of the best math teachers I have ever had. If I could take all of my math classes with her I would. Homework not too much.Tests true to homework.
GREAT TEACHER!!!! I hated stats in High school, but she made it so clear that it ended up being my favorite class! She is crystal clear in teaching and is extremley helpful!! TAKE THIS CLASS!! you wont be disappointed!!
best teacher
I love Mrs. Sporer. she is knowledgable about her subject and makes something hard easy to understand. shes a great teacher and i acutally learned alot.
DO NOT TAKE STATISTICS ONLINE! I spent too much time figuring out how to type equations on Web CT rather than solving problems.Takes days to get simple responses via email.Bryan, the author of the book, also stars in the class videos. He is hilariously quirky.2pgs of notes are allowed for final exam and midterm.Be one with your TI-83 calculator. Ohm!
If you need to take a math course at DVC and go to the SR campus you have to take Sporer or Julia Walters simply the best math teachers I have ever had and if you have two brain cells you can rub together you can do exceedingly well in their class. I cannot rave enough about these two ladies.
Sporer is one of the best math teachers I've come across. She is very helpful and always available to help you when you need it or if its just to go notes to reexplain something. I took both of my math requirements with her. She grades kinda of hard but she makes you work for your grade and makes sure that u have an udnerstanding of what your doing
She's a hard but fair teacher. She answers questions on homework, and will work with students in the math lab. My only complaint was that she moved a little too fast. Her exams encompass everything that you've learned in the class up to that point. She does review before an exam for points. She offers some extra credit for going to the math lab.

191 is review of material you've learned, but applied in different ways. She teaches really well, is willing to help, and quite clear. Weights on her exams for the class was 40% (not counting the final-20%) which is my only complaint bcs we only took 2 exams, which means if you didnt do well on them-hard to get that A. Definitely worth taking.
GREAT teacher. She explained the material extremely well, and she made it clear what would be on the tests/quizzes. It is not an easy class, but if you work at it you can get an A especially because she is so helpful. Highly recommend.
I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with majority of these comments. She isn't a good teacher at ALL. She isn't clear, she expects kids to know everything ALREADY but really, that's the point of why we're in her class...so that SHE can teach US. I hate going to class because she is just so unclear and just so RUDE for no reason.
She answers hw questions. She gives extra credit for people who show up to class when a lot of others don't. The quizzes and exams problems came from the hw problems (the same idea but different values) so do your hw. She collects hw every week so you need to work hard. She really loves math! Go to the math lab for credit and get help. She is helpful! Some times she runs with the martial and she unclear but just ask her questions after class or at office hours or at the math lab.
Sporer can come off rude, but I think in the end she just really wants us to pass. Her teaching ways are a little off, sometimes they aren't clear at all, but she can help you anytime. She is mean at times, but funny too. If you wanna work hard, take her.
She is very good at what she does. Its a fast paced class, but if you pay attention, do the work, you will be fine. She is a very good educator and is passionate about what she does
I am terrible at math so i was deathly afraid of taking this class! thanks to mrs. sporer i survived and would have to say shes pretty good. there is a HUGE stats project towards the end in 3 phases (50,50,150, points), hw weekly, tests, quizzes, final. some extra credit, get all you can. take her for stats
I don't know if she is just off her game...but this professor is a hot mess this semester! She answers questions wrong (all the time!) she is unclear when instructing...Oh, and she doesn't grade homework nor did she give us answers for the test review...The instruction feels careless...Not happy about my tuition going to this.
Knows her stuff. Tests are hard but she doesn't dock you too many points for stupid mistakes like dropping a sign. Maybe difficult to ask for help because some mistake her for being rude, but she isn't. She does a good job helping you understand the material if you are struggling. Throws curve balls on tests so be prepared for anything!
She is an amazing teacher. She goes through the materials very well. She will answer all your question that you have even when you are in the middle of a section. she answers all homework questions before its due even when its the day of. due all the homework and study for the test you should be fine. there is a stats project its a group project.
Actually an excellent teacher. I ended up really liking her. There was a point where she was rude and condescending at times.I don't think she realized it. Then it changed. I think people complained and she got nicer and more helpful. She means well, but doesn't always know how she comes across. She wants people to like the class. I actually did!
Basically she speed reads from the book she wrote then you get massive amounts of hw on the work. Essentially if you are bad at math you're screwed best shot is make friends with the smart kids and you get them to show you the stuff. I got a C and I swear I learned nothing from her. She's nice though. And definitely not unfair
The work load in her class is manageable. There are HW assignments, tests, and a project. If you stay on top of everything than this class is easy; just devote a little time to HW and studying.
You must attend each and every class to keep up! Take good notes and watch the videos that are produced by her partner that co-authored the book. He is easier to understand than she is. Though she is hard her tests are pretty fair. She does go through the material pretty quickly so you will need to go to her during lab hours or get additional help!
I dreaded going to her class. She's cool but her teaching style was definitely no good for me. She's too general and expects you to know what she's talking about right away. She made me feel stupid whenever I asked her a question. But that's just me. I don't recommend her. She's nice and cool though.
She's a funny person who's GOOD at teaching and will make you work HARD for an A. However, there are badly worded questions on her tests once in a while. I thought her summer stats class goes by a bit too fast; if its a major requirement for any of you, i'd HIGHLY recommend just taking it in the fall. but overall, it still was an excellent class.
She's very passionate about statistics/ math, and it SHOWS. She is a very understanding person, but she is far from a "push-over." If you're going to be absent, tell her before the class starts (e.g. if you wake up sick, email her), don't leave during class, and NO TEXTING. Extremely interesting person too! Definitely the best teacher I've had.
Hard subject. Very condesending and scary to approach. Seems like a nice lady outside of class and is on top of her material and paperwork. Gets your exams back in time.
She may come off as really rude and sarcastic, but you'll learn to understand her humor. She LOVES her job and is always willing to help. You may not understand it the first time, but if you ask she has a million other ways to explain the concept. Show up, take notes, ask questions and you'll be good.
She's great at statistics and math in general. She knows her stuff and is open to questions all the time if you do not understand. Her tests and quizzes are pretty fair. Attending every lecture and doing homework is important. If you keep with the pace it should be a doable, not an easy class, but if you slack it'll be hard.
She can be intimidating. It helps to get into study groups and be sure to do the homework and practice at home! Everything is equivalent so you need to start soon. See her in her office hours, she will acknowledge. She is very direct. it's right or its wrong, there is no grey with her. Overall it wasn't bad for a math class
great teacher! i really struggle w/ math &she was always willing to help gives extra credit, i think people are confusing rude 4 blunt but still she is very nice! will return amount of effort & respect that you give her. she goes at the pace of the classe's understanding & doesnt make U memorize tedious formulas hw/tests/quizes are fair,TALK 2 her!
Shes very clear as to what she wants. She wrote the book you use in the class & for HW. She knows the material. She is great at teaching yet not so much when asking Qs. She has you go find out for yourself and then come to her. Go 2 class! her notes are great and you use them 4 your HW. She gives labs in class if youre not there you miss 50 pts
I liked having her as my teacher. Shes great at answering HW Qs when you come prepared. If you dont, she doesnt like it. She has a project for the end of term, picking a good group is crucial. Study groups & studying hard helped me. Cheat sheet is allowed for test use wisely. Doing extra practice probs as review helps. Final is comprehensive.
Hard class to understand. She gets off topic easily, leaving less time to actually teach. Tests are pretty hard. Final is a killer. If you have to take this class study your booty off and get as much help as possible from other people in the class. Everything helps. Wish I would have taken my own advice
rude to students, not clear, does not answer questions, assumes students should know answer, not approachable, very cold.
does not encourage learning, not approachable, rude with students, does not answer questions, not encouraging.
Hard class! Show up and do the work. She isn't the friendliest but she is passionate about the subject.
Absolutely incredible professor. She is really fair. She doesn't make her students memorize an unnecessary amount of things. Her teaching method is very direct and easy to understand. I'd highly suggest anyone to take a class with this professor. I absolutely love her!!
It's a hard class so you need to study constantly but she is very helpful and her tests are based off of her textbook. She grades very fairly (too nice to be honest) and like I said the questions are based off the textbook
Good instructor who really wants you to learn and comprehend what she's teaching. Would rather take her time to let everyone understand the material, rather than rush through it to get it done. Offers extra credit in the math lab. Do your homework, and pay attention in class, and study for the tests and you should get at least a B, if not an A.
If math is second nature to you, this instructor is just fine. However, if math is not your strong point, you will need to study hard and constantly to get a good grade. She is one of the few teachers that puts students ahead of materials, and she will slow down the course if people are struggling. I would recommend her.
Shes the best math teacher that i have ever had in my LIFE ever, but the exams, and quizzes are hard because its a lot of critical thinking and its nothing like the homework, you really need to understand every concept and apply it to very different kinds of problems. I would recommend her but don't expect to get an A unless your a genius
I've never been good at math in my life til I took this class. Superb teacher, she explains everything so well and goes with the pace of the class. 3 quizzes, 2 tests, 1 take home. Offers e.c. and attendance points. Exams are tough but she provides a good practice exam prior. I got an A, and I've always been awful at math! (LOTS OF HARD WORK THOUGH
I really liked Prof. Sporer. She is strict, but she goes witht he pace of the class. However, if the rest of the class is ready to move on but you're still confused, she has specific times when she's available for help and stats tutors in the math lab. I'm very happy I took this class, just study hard, do the homework, and take notes. Good luck!
AMAZING teacher! I took Math 120 in the fall with a different professor and dropped, I decided to retake it this spring with Sporer and now have an A in the class due to her amazing teaching skills. She is strict but will do just about anything to make sure you understand the material, and always makes herself available. Great professor overall!
Great teacher!!! She is very strict, but she WILL teach you algebra in a clear organized format. Take good notes, do all homework and study for tests. She also offers extra credit for doing your homework in the math lab.
Sporer is an excellent teacher. Her personality scares a lot of people off at the beginning of the semester, but don't be fooled. She is sarcastic, funny, and the best calc teacher I have ever had. She wants you to understand the material and is willing to do many examples with you until you do. I left her class feeling prepared for calc 1.
She's alright, talks about her horses a lot, but alright none the less
Awesome teacher! Accessible (tutoring and office hours) - she wants you to learn the material. Not too hard, but a fast-paced pre-calc class, so get help ASAP if you are confused. Enthusiasm for her topic help keep a positive atmosphere in class. Highly recommended teacher.
Terrible at explaining things. Her examples and notes are useless. I am putting in so many hrs at math lab and having to hire a tutor. Everyone failed the first quiz. I quote "you should be able to just figure it out" ok let me figure out something I've never done before. Take Walters, got an A over SUMMER in trig, wasn't easy but it was possible.
I came into the class LOST, but I came to class everyday, listened, did the HW and studied and eventually I started to understand. You have to make sure you get everything in the beginning of the course because the topics are cumulative and build on each other. Tests are HARD! you must STUDY. Not an easy A. She is a very good teacher tho!
Shes a very nice professor, We get side-tracked alot and the lectures take FOREVER but shes extremely helpful if you ask nicely. The study guides are similar to the tests, and it is possible to get a B with routine studying.
She may seem mean at first, but once you get to know her. Shes nice. She gives out labs to prepare for tests. The group project was difficult at first, so start ahead of time so you can email her for help. You need to study for the test and quizzes. the notes helps you understand the material. She will explain it until you understand it.
Really good teacher, I felt like I learned a ton and was really prepared to move on to Calc. Gives homework out of the book which I hugely appreciated and will give you feedback on it when you turn it in so you know if you're doing it the way she wants. Posts really good practice tests and always has in-class reviews for all the tests.
This teacher is unreasonably challenging. Her tests are alot different from her review. She often takes a while to email back which can be annoying. If you don't like word problems, AVOID HER!!! She will help you in her office hours though if you need help.
I don't know why anyone would say she's mean, she's just very straight forward. She also makes you WORK for everything. There's no slacking in this class, but she does know her stuff so it's best for you to pay attention. Best math professor I've had at this school so far.
Excelent.
She may be tough at times, but does actually care about students and tries to help everyone pass. If you ask for help when needed she will help.
Professor Sporer is an amazing math teacher. She makes the material easy to understand. There is a lot of homework , but she gives you a week after the lecture to complete it. There are group labs and a group project. The labs are really helpful, but I personally don't like group projects, so that was my least favorite part of the class.
Best math teacher I've ever had. She gives help in the lab when I need it, and is very nice. She is a great person, and I like to hear her talk about her horses :)
I was very nervous about taking Statistics, but I am very pleased with this teacher. She did a very good job with lecturing and opportunities for success. She really cares about he students doing well in class. Gives many chances for extra credit which helps a lot. A lot of group projects but she lets you choose your groups. Best math teacher!
She accused me of cheating several times because I got A's on tests & perfect scores on homework and quizzes. Offers some extra credit, but won't impact your grade that much. I don't ask questions in class anymore because she tells me I'm dumb in front of the class when I do. One major group project that takes 3+ months to complete; not easy A!
Sporer may seem intimidating, but she's very sweet and caring. She makes you work hard so that you'll be prepared for calculus. She is very accessible before and after class and will gladly help you with anything. The textbook is free and online. She has one take home exam, so you can make up your previous test scores. Study hard and you'll pass!
Best math teacher! She assigns the homework and its typically due 2 classes after. The first class she allows you to ask questions in class if youre struggling. Shes quick with her lectures but makes sure you completely understand before moving on. Attendance, the textbook, and a graphic calculator are all a must for each class.
Do NOT take this class during summer unless you have zero life outside of school. School officially started 6/19, three online discussions/two worksheets due 6/20, two homework assignments and a quiz due 6/21. This schedule is insane even by summer standards. You've been warned. As an individual I like the professor but this class is pure hell.
I took the online class for statistics. I hate how it is basically self learning for this class. She is terrible at responding to emails or discussions when we need it the most. We have homework partners which is stupid because it is an online class. I have never met my partner and they're terrible at groupwork.
PACE class. Very time-consuming class, must listen to online lectures, read textbook, fast paced, condensed in class lecture, worksheets due weekly, quiz every other week. Too much info, too fast. Tutoring a must. Weak tutor. Math lab must be used also. Very difficult class! group project also time consuming. can't gage final grade.
Doesn't provide an answer key for homework so we never know if we are doing our homework right. Her textbook complicates everything. Many of the students were using a stats book from a different class to try and answer hw. I have taken Stats before and it does not need to be this challenging. A genuine recommendation to avoid taking it online.
Run far and run fast. Her co authored "textbook" is not helpful, she responds to emails and discussions super late, its a self teaching environment, tests are extremely hard but more than 50% of grade. I took a 5 unit Algebra for Statistics course, got a B. Dropped this class. Statistics is NOT this difficult, she makes it harder than necessary.
Get ready to teach yourself everything about statistics. The only way to pass was to watch videos and study for over 25 hours/week on your own. Little to no lectures. More than half the class dropped off after a few weeks and those left were often in tears after class. The hardest class I've ever had to teach myself. You've been warned.
Hard grader on tests and quizzes. must do hw. lectures a lot.
Very organized, clear expectations for success. Fast grader. Lots of online and office hours dedicated for students. She is a great teacher. On the flip-side, she grades very hard. Lots of group projects, lots of homework. And she can be intimidating when you're confused on something.
Yikes.. Every week there's hw, a group worksheet, quiz, and you have to watch at minumum one hour worth of lecture videos ON TOP of going to class. Her lectures are given by some other guy in those videos who she's constantly rebutting. She takes forever to reply to help, and when she does she's super vague and RUDE (very temperamental). Stay away.
Rene is a fine professor. She really knows her stuff and is clearly very smart. I did not think this class was hard. However, I was not impressed by a few things. 1. She is really hard to contact and does not reply to emails or update grades frequently 2. She can come off rude . If you can handle that then take her.
Her lecture was awesome and very practical!
I was really nervous when I had to take statistics. Professor Sporer is the best teacher I've had for math. She holds office hours before class and she gives you credit for trying your best. She has a ton of outside source material in case you don't get it the first time. I feel like I really earned my grade in her class. She is so nice and funny!
She was very understanding and tried her best to make statistics more interesting. She was always willing to lend a hand especially when the material was hard to understand.
Lots of homework, hard tests, fast paced learning, tough grader, do not skip going to class if you are not a math wiz, she isn't very nice a good amount of the time, do not forget your book or your calculator to class. Minimally accessible outside of class, group projects, she got harder after the covid-19 online transition. GOOD LUCK YOU CAN DO IT
Challenges you to think! Also loved her home improvement/horse racing math analogies. Prof Sporer was very nurturing and really likes to see her female students succeed in the field of mathematics. Although she wasn't the easiest for precalc, this class is good preparation for calculus. She has inspired me to continue my studies in math and science
Prof. Sporer is the best math teacher I've had! YOU HAVE TO GO TO CLASS! Even if you miss one, it's difficult to catch up... But, she really cares about her students and wants them to do well. She's always there for office hours and offers extra credit if you go to the Math Lab to get help! She's the best math teacher I've ever had! TAKE HER!
