I highly recommend this teacher, she was extremely helpful if you had any trouble. All of her questions for exams were directly out of lectures and readings. She was very animated and obviously loved her subject. Attend the class and ask questions, either in class or during office hours, and you will do well.
Great teacher, very passionate and approachable. Loves the subject she teaches and knows a lot about it. One of the the best teachers I've had thus far.
I understand that some people found her hard to understand (she's French and often warbles her English) but I'm French myself so it wasn't so hard. Tough on grading, but she's passionate and animate about her subject so you'll have great fun learning about the Romans ;)
Made roman art interesting! She great, passionate! Made morning classes go by super fast!
She is a great teacher and will help you if you have trouble with the class. She talks VERY fast, so you have to really listen and you'll probably end up taking 6 pages of notes per class. However, I really liked her and I recommend her.
She is an amazing prof! Really passionate and funny. re ignited my love for the topic. straight forward teaching style. just take good notes!
It is truly astonishing how someone can make a Roman History class so brutal and painful. The book is so much more interesting and comprehensible than her poorly prepared lectures actually are. So, for some outdated, old school teaching methods, you might as well take the Sanders class.
Amazing prof. Extremely helpful and speaks with enthusiasm. If you are interested in the romans she is the one to take. Highly recommend. Not an easy class but if you do your work she will grade you fairly
Great teacher. Knows what she's talking about and is fun to engage with. No final, midterm 50%. Worth taking. Interesting class, and she's nice too.
Very poor grade distribution, with only 3/12 lectures of the syllabus taught, we'd already received more than three quarters of our final grade.
answers students questions with 'look it up and tell the class'. horrible instructions for assignments. says one thing, wants another. no chronology within emperor's reign. constantly makes mistakes. expect 6-7p of notes written every class. on the quiz even if what you write is a fact but its not what she wants its wrong. should no teach...AVOID
Tough marker and didn't approach the course subject matter the way I thought she would have. I still learned a bit but wouldn't take another ARTH course with her. Classics is more her thing than Art History. She never gave good comments on assignments and for so reason always gave me the same grade even when I did what she wanted. Weird.
Terrible professor.
Must attend ALL lectures and take extensive notes, however she is very clear and all of her exam/quiz questions come directly out of the lecture. Very animated and interesting, definitely worth taking.
Lectures are poorly prepared and organized. Topic-jumping is common, so confusion is inevitable. Asking for clarification is useless, as questions are answered in an equally erratic manner. Textbook unused. Outside study required for comprehension, but exams are based solely on in-class notes. Exam requirements unclear and erratic.
Unfortunately, taking this class almost made me hate the subject. Roman history is something I've always loved but this class made me resent it. The lectures are not only fast-paced (which is expected) but also very unorganized. The prof doesn't really seem to know what she's talking about and commonly makes mistakes concerning dates and names.
Quizzes are straightforward. Assignments however, are not. You must attend ALL lectures or at least have a friend to lend you notes as she does not put anything on Moodle. Go see her for help if you think you're confused because chances are, what you think is right is not what she's looking for. Follow her directions and you'll get an A!
If you miss one class, you're toast. She lectures and writes all over the board in no orderly fashion making it very difficult to follow. She goes way too fast, and then she'll test you on the most insignificant terms after constantly hinting to focus on one topic in particular. I would STRONGLY recommend avoiding any of her classes.
Renee teaches in a different way than most teachers, her structuring of the course content only makes sense to her but once you get to know her, you understand. Her exams are terms from class notes, make sure you know your events, names and overall outcome. She does not care about dates, if you have a good memory, you will enjoy this class.
Madame Bouchard gives a lot of opportunities to improve your knowledge . Her grading criteria are clear as well as she gives a lot of useful instructions before the exams. If you go to the class and listen, you will not have any bigger problems with having a good grade. She has a good sense of humour.
Personally loved her lecture style, but I admit it's not for everyone. I found lectures to be gripping and interesting. It's a lot of info and she goes through it quickly, but she clarifies very well if asked to. Just don't skip class - her quizzes are based on the lectures. Pay attention, take meticulous notes, and you'll do fine.
I love her classes and will take any other available at 6:00pm. Classes are very interesting and teacher friendly. Patrticipation and everything you hear in the class metters .
Worst teacher I've ever had. I literally was all my elementary, middle and high school in an Italian school, learnt about the Roman Empire for years; could teach a lecture, and I still got a mediocre grade. Her quizzes are not even about history, she just tests you on remembering random irrelevant names of a city or one minor historic figure.
By far my favourite professor at Concordia. She is very clear in her instructions but is a very hard marker. Once you have taken one of her exams, you will know what to expect. No essays, just 3-4 quizzes worth 15-20% each. She gives at least one bonus work per semester. If you want to fall in love with Roman/Greek history, she is your lady!
Well there is much to say about Prof. Bouchard, but unfortunately most of it is bad. Her lectures are all over the place, does not follow any particular timeline and focuses on minute details that you will forget the second that the exam is over. Did not enjoy her style of teaching and would not recommend. If you do struggle, go see her, she helps.
Professor Bouchard is one of my favourite teachers I've had at Concordia. Yes it's true that she goes through lectures quite quickly and going to class is a MUST but if you attend class, listen, take notes and ask for help (if needed), you will do great.
Professor Bouchard was not my favourite prof unfortunately. The majority of her lectures were verbatim from the textbook which was frustrating for me because I expected something extra from her lectures. She does make sure everyone in the class is following what she's saying but overall just not inspiring.
Had her for Greek History from the Bronze age to Alex, and man was it fun. She's wickedly funny, and adds her own commentary on events that would seem otherwise dull. Yes she goes a bit fast through lectures, but she always slows down when asked. Reading the book and attending lectures if necessary to get good grades, but it's not that much reading
Professor Bouchard is my favourite teacher and even if my grades for her classes weren't the best, I am going to take another classes with her. You have to pay attention what she is saying, because you won't find everything in the book. The only problem for me was the quantity of the material- too much information;)
Lectures are heavy and all over the place. Will jump forward many years then go back. Gives lots of irrelevant little side comments to try to make class more fun and interesting but just confuses everyone. Her tests are done in a way to trick you. Watch out in the multiple choice. Used to love history before this class!
I had her twice. If you want an A, focus and take notes very carefully, learn them by heart and you will be very fine on quizzes. At the beginning record her if you feel it goes too fast. No pop quizzes, no final exam. Only 3 quizzes and one midterm. Hilarious and passionate about the material! Very knowledgeable and comical
Very knowledgeable, energic and hilarious. Makes you feel good about heavy subject but very accessible in class and outside class. An A on the exam comes from your ability to take great notes she lectures carefully. Record lecture at first and review notes taken but you will become a great note taker after !
Teacher goes off track and loses her place, quick talker and sometimes very unclear. follows text book but loses context cuz she skips parts multi choice tests, beware trick questions be ready to memorize names and relationships, concepts and actual event aren't important to her more than half of the questions on tests involve remembering names
Renee is kind and approachable. Unfortunately, her grading criteria is abhorrent. There are three multiple choice quizzes and a midterm. Questions do not reflect a conceptual understanding of Republican history, rather she tests your ability to recount trivial facts pertaining to obscure historical figures/events, many of which are trick questions.
I did pretty well in this class but I really had to work for it. She gives quizzes frequently and there's one midterm that (from what I recall), has a combination of multiple choice, short answers, and 3 long answers. She talks really fast, so be prepared to bring your laptop and write as many notes as you can. Renee does care for her students.
Renee is very energetic and enthusiastic, and often quite funny. She lectures quickly but I managed to take pretty good notes. Lots of quizzes/tests with some tricky questions but she really wants her students to do well and gives many make-up opportunities. I liked her a lot, and learned a lot!
Renée is definitely not a bad teacher, she just included weird questions in her tests and exams. She likes to trick you by asking question about a subject you briefly talked a bout in only one lecture, so like show up or your screwed. Other than that, shes chill and its relatively easy to have a good grade in her classes.
To do well in this class you must memorize names, places and relationships. No detail is too small. Organize and memorize notes, a conceptual understanding of the Roman Republic is not necessary AT ALL. Tests are specific and tricky, read questions carefully. Bouchard does care for her student's, go see her if you're struggling.
No Moodle, no slides, and she talks fast. You're not getting anywhere unless you write/type fast. Exams are almost entirely trick questions, and you will lose marks if you spell any Roman name incorrectly. She avoids complaints by giving people bonus marks for participation. Good luck to all Classics majors; she teaches most of the courses now.
Renée is a wonderful teacher. She is very invested in her lectures and makes the class laugh a lot. She makes her expectations very clear early on. In CLAS 242 all the material came from lectures, and to study all we had to do was memorize our notes.
Worst professor in the department of classics. Try to avoid her!
Absolutely ridiculous grading procedure to the level of unreasonable
I took this class as an elective. She was by far one of the best teachers I had at Concordia. Yes, you have to go to class. Take note of everything she says and I mean EVERYTHING, even if it looks useless, it's most probably going to be on the exam. The tests/midterm is very specific and they all count for a lot so you can't screw up any of them.
Funny sense of humour, entertaining. Does not have powerpoints, you have to go to every class. Everything written on board will most likely be a question on quizzes/midterms. Put the effort into seeing her regarding any questions, she will boost your grade. I made a major mistake on the midterm due to a misunderstanding, she boosted my final grade.
She doesn't know her history. Your better off looking at wikipedia. Unorganized lectures .
No textbook, no powerpoint, rare use of blackboard, talks too fast, unclear, no structure, ridiculous exams full of spelling errors. This prof needs to step it up. Almost impossible to get a good grade unless you're willing to interrupt her, and even then she barely takes the time to hear you question before assaulting you with an unclear answer.
She's a funny and enthusiastic prof but she has no powerpoints and talks way too fast. It's hard to keep up with the notes and she jumps from one subject to another. Her exams are very specific so make sure to read your notes thouroughly. Would not take again
By far the worst teacher I've come across at Concordia. She removed grades on the midterm after having been asked to review the grades. Unbelievable. That amounts to penalizing students for being asked to do your job better.
Terrible experience. The exams are difficult and too specific on the most unnecessary details. She goes too fast and there are no powerpoints. She is really harsh on grading too and the average is significantly low, she doesn't seem to be worried about it. Wouldn't recommend her for a history elective.
Impossible to do well in this class even if you attend all lectures. The exams are difficult for nothing and doesn't address actual events of roman history. Instead, she tests you on the most useless details. She goes too fast over the material with not powerpoints and she takes off points if you go see her for questions about your exam. AVOID!!!!!
Entertaining BUT she talks way too fast No powerpoint so you spend the whole class taking notes like crazy. You must take down EVERYTHING she says because her exams ask you for the most random/ insignificant detail. She never goes twice over the same material so if you missed it too bad for your exam! Avoid if you can, the cons outweighs the pros.
This is probably the worst class I have taken at Concordia. I adore archaeology, but the professor takes everything from the textbook and legitimately expects you to memorize every detail of every artifact (of hundreds) for her BS tests. Over half the class failed the midterm and she "didn't understand why". Will never take her again.
AVOIDDD!! She's such a nice lady, and in the beginning of the semester the class seemed very doable and fun. quiz 1 was a complete joke but the midterm... over half the class failed. she wanted us to memorize everything word for word which is absolutely impossible with the amount of information! saving grace was doing the rest online
Enjoying class so far. She talks quite quickly and it can be difficult to get down everything she says live. Material is engaging, and she is very passionate while lecturing which makes content more interesting. Bouchard is also very funny and made me laugh while watching recordings. she also shows us her cat on zoom and he is very cute :)
I think she is one of the funnest professors I have ever had. Her classes are lecture heavy but if you take good notes and are good at memorizing, her classes are amazing. She is so funny, she knows her stuff. I honestly took all the classes I could with her. Would recommend if you have good memory skills.
Great prof. Nice person. Cares about her students. Posts recordings of lectures online. Exams are multiple choice. If you listen in class, you will be ok. Her papers are short and precise. Gives detailed instructions on what she wants from you. If you need help, she'll help you. My fav prof so far at Concorida. Corrects exams fast.
One of the most useless profs at Concordia. For the assignment, she literally only tells you to "give the historical significance". Other than that, literally just read the book.
Professor Bouchard is the best choice if you have a good memory and want little exams/quizzes. Never skip a class and pay lots of attention to what she says because all the details matter, even those you think are not that important. Once you get used to her style, any class you take with her will be an easy A+.
She's one of the most fun teachers I've ever had. This was my first classics class and she made everything so interesting. Her lectures were long and there was a lot of information to learn for each quiz. I feel like the class is hard but she made it so enjoyable so it was worth it.
Bouchard is the most positive, enthusiastic, and captivating professor I have ever had. I loved her class so much in the first semester that I changed my schedule to have her in the second semester. Her tests are based on lecture material, she is a little tricky with the phrasing of exam questions, but her exams are in no way difficult.
I have taken every history and archaeology course with the department and she is by far the worst professor. This women literally forgot which direction East and West were in the middle of a lecture. Her broken English combined with erratic lecture style results in an extremely unprofessional learning environment.
Prof. Bouchard is an excellent lecturer and makes the material interesting. She grades hard and on small assignments, 1page assignment for 20% of your grade. This doesn't offer students the best opportunity for success. She's one of those professors who don't believe in giving work 100% even if deserved. Won't take again! Stay away if u like ur GPA
A great human being but terrible teacher. She's a classicist, and this class is cross listed with the classics department, so history is not her strength. Her lectures are all over the place and she leaves vague (and very little) feedback on assignments. Don't expect to learn anything in the course, it's all memorization, and for naught.
She gives the worst feedback and is a very tough grader, I had to depend on my quizzes rather than my assignments.
Her fun personality made each lecture really fun to watch. You can tell she loves teaching the history of the Roman Empire. Given it was a 3-hour class, it did feel like a lot of information was given during each lecture, but I tortured myself by transcribing EVERY word she said using split screen - it's the only way to get an A in this class!
She's the best, very fun, easy tests
I couldn't select enough tags, but Prof Bouchard is super entertaining and gives some of the best lectures I've attended at the university level. I've never attended a single lecture in which she wasn't captivating and always does an excellent job of sharing information with us on any topic. She cares about the students and material she teaches.
Bogs down lectures with incredibly specific details, like the number of pillars on the Parthenon on one side, and expects you to recall these details. She's nice, but the grading scheme is brutal. Don't expect to remember anything after taking this class, unless you can recall specific details on architecture. 3rd hardest class i've had in 3 years.
Professor Bouchard is kind and enthusiastic, but her class is not worth your time or money. Her introduction to archaeology class is very poorly structured, and graded on a handful of quizzes. There's no textbook or any sort of supplemental material to learn from besides her own lectures, which are often scatterbrained and hard to follow.
Professor Bouchard's courses all have the same structure. You don't have to write long papers and do extensive research. What you must do is memorize her lectures! All quizzes and exams are multiple choice, so if you excel in courses like that...TAKE HER! Her lectures can be a bit hard to follow sometimes, but take good notes and you'll be fine!
Very few tests that are only 15 minutes long and a 24 minute final give barely enough time to read through everything thoroughly, let alone think. A very harsh non-curved grading criteria makes this course a very stressful experience. Avoid her if you value your grades or learning.
The prof is actually hilarious and makes the course super interesting and captivating however her evalutations are wild. Her multiple choice quizzes are insane, 25% each, 25 questions and only 15 minutes to do it and the questions are slightly unreasonable. Also, if you are a history major, avoid CLAS classes because I got 82% but it's a B+.
That class was hard. Pure pure PURE memorization. You did not need the textbook because the quizzes were solely based on her lectures but that class was rough. I have to thank my genetics and my greek ancestors for giving me a good memory because if it weren't for them, I would have failed miserably.
She was such a nice and caring professor but her class made me regret even thinking of majoring in classics. Heavy lectures that you have to memorize word for word if you want to think of doing well on one of 3-4 multiple choice tests.
I took this class despite the negative reviews here and I loved it! She is funny, sweet and overall a great prof. There is a lot to memorize but if you attend class and write good notes, you'll do well.
The major goal of a history lecture is to establish continuity. Starting with broad ideas then answering the specific what, where... why. The goal of a multiple choice quiz is not memorization, but to teach why the answers are important in the chronology of a topic. Although kind, and highly knowledgeable, Bouchard doesn't seem to understand this.
If you read this BEFORE taking Renee, I BEG you not to take her. If you're CURRENTLY in Renee's class, you are 100% better off dropping it. Trick questions every quiz, arbitrary testing, you cannot challenge her grading or she will get defensive. Lectures are a disorganized joke, you're better off with ANY other teacher.
You will either love her style, or absolutely hate it! You have to attend her lectures. All tests are based solely on the notes you take in class, so make sure they're thorough, and I mean very very thorough. She is hilarious, very open to joking in class. She has a great wealth of knowledge on the topics she teaches.
Love Bouchard - very funny and very passionate, answers even the dumbest of questions with enthusiasm. You've got to attend every lecture or know someone who takes great notes/records the lectures as your grade is entirely dependent on your ability to study and memorise her lectures.
Great professor with a lot of enthusiasm. Attend all classes and take notes on whatever she mentions IN CLASS!!! That's what she will put in the quizzes. She doesn't provide any notes it's just the textbook so TAKE NOTES!!!!, you'll save yourself a lot of time. She cares about her students and she's very reasonable.Would take her class again!!!!!!
Prof. Bouchard's entire grading system is based on 10MCQ quizzes. It can either be an easy grade or be an extremely frustrating experience, especially considering students ask alarming questions at times. Also, she loves trick questions and sometimes it does feel like I'm participating in a bar quiz rather than evaluated on my knowledge...
I was starting to like her even though she was quite disorganized in her lectures, its quite easy to understand because she makes the class sort of fun. However i was genuinely surprised when she failed me on my midterm even though i was confident of having a really good grade. Its a shame really.
She is a good professor overall; her lectures are really fun, and she loves to make the entire class laugh now and then. There are 4 tests, and that is pretty much your entire semester. The tests often include niche questions that refer to very specific moments from class. The lectures can get overwhelming and sometimes feel too long, though.
Very good teacher, make sure you go to her lectures and you will have a good grade.
Would not recommend her classes. All grades are based on rote memorization of the textbook. All lectures are simply repeating material from the textbook. Quiz content often involves obscure and unimportant historical information rather than the key material which you should be focusing on.
Amazing prof. Cares very much about her students, keeps lectures interesting. Textbook is useful, but not required as long as you show up to lectures and pay attention.
Fantastic teacher! If you go to class and take detailed notes, you will do very well. All tests are purely recall. Lectures are super funny and interesting, and fairly well organized. No need to read the textbook just go to every class!
