Alright teacher, shes kind of bland, tries to get conversations started in class, but nobody talks. Shes a basic textbook kind of teacher, but over all she isnt bad.
Ugh.. DON'T DO IT!! She reads directly off the powerpoints which are directly from the textbook. Attendence is mandatory. She doesn't give you enough time to write down the whole slides - just the key words - so that you can go and look them up in the book later. WHAT'S THE POINT?!?! this class is painful, you should avoid it at all costs.
This class was a really good class, as much as you can expect from an introduction class. Attendence is mandatory but she plays movies that aren't boring at all. 3 tests that aren't hard, basically study text questions and review notes. She has no online notes but just go to class and write down basic notes or outline textbook.
Worst Teacher I've ever had
There's professors who want their students to succeed, then there's Renee Overdyke.
boring lectures and she doesnt give you time to copy the slides. her test are really stright forward easy to get a desent grade.takes attendence likes its her job.dont be late bc she will stop the class until you sit.
One of those pseudo-intellectuals, who thinks they're enlightened. honestly i couldn't stand listening her try desperately to be "insightful". She's dimwitted. And her class is a complete waste of time. There isn't a big workload, but it's hard to get an A.
Makes an introductory course way harder then it should be. Material covered is pretty much common sense, but if your after an easy A forget it. Attendance policy is rediculous -2 off final grade for one absence. For some reason she just really hates students.
Shes really nice, if go and actually speak to her. There is an attendence policy but it helps your grade at the end of the semester. She printed out a 30 page review sheet for me.Its an actual review sheet for the whole semester.
Not sure what people are finding fault with. Just show up to class and do your study guides and you won't have much to worry about.
She's not a bad teacher. Wants you to show up on time. If you're 2 minutes late, she'll watch you walk through the door and wait for you to sit down. Don't be late, take notes, read the book, and you'll do well in this class.
There is no excuse to not get an A in her classes. She passes out a study guide and the tests come directly from the guide. Show up on time, take good notes, and work the study guide and you will enjoy her class.
Overall her class is unpleasant. Her policies are juvenile at best. Frequently she makes unsubstantiated claims regarding course material. I don't feel I learned anything, even though I was always present because of the attendence policy.
She can be petty at times, for sure, and have an inflated sense of worth/authority at others. Still, such minor qualms aside, she teaches the material well enough, and simply enough. Her classes shouldn't be too difficult, all things considered.
She breaks things down very well and makes the course easy to learn. Attendance is mandatory with only one excused absence allowed. But there is no reason to get a bad grade in course especially since the tests are based on a 30 page study guide for the whole course she gave us at the beginning of the semester. She also lectures from the book alot.
Attendance is mandatory (in fact she gets a little uptight if you go to her class late), all of her slides strictly come from the TB so if you take all the notes you don't really need one (it'll help though because there are review questions at the end of each chapter), participation helps your grade a little, and tests are pretty straightforward.
She knows her stuff. as long as you go to class, listen to her lecturees, take many notes and read the chapters you should be okay. she only gives you 3 tests and attendance that result in your final grade. she doesnt give out much extra credit but does try to help out w/ borderline grades
Not bad. Loads her slides up with material and for the most part, reads them directly to you. Tries to cram in a lot of material into each lecture. Be aware, only 3 tests a semester plus attendance. Not horrible but sometimes it seems like shes a bit stuck up in her ways.
she is a very clear instructor. she gets upset if you are late, and takes attendance every class. 3 tests per semester. every question on the tests were on her slides in class. if you just highlight the textbook with the info from the slides and reread that 2 times, then you are set for an A in the class.
I found her class to be very difficult. She rushes through the lectures and tries to cram a lot. Attendance is mandatory, she even stops the lecture if someone comes late, and waits for them to sit down to start again. Her tests were kind of hard. However, she does like to here her students opinions, so speak up in her class, you might get 2 pts.
She's a straight forward teacher. Really knows her stuff. 3 tests based directly from text. I would have gotten an A but I missed a few classes. MANDATORY ATTENDANCE!!! Just read the book (or the summaries at the end of each chapter), show up to EVERY class, and be open minded. You'll surely get an A.
Professor is really GREAT. She pretends to be scary at first but dont let her fool you. Attendance mandatory but seriously if you go and take her notes you will never have to read the text. Dont even bother buying it. Tests somewhat difficult but if you study the notes it's literally word for word out of them. Did very well in class. I RECOMMEND IT
Overdyke did not teach sociology in a way that did it justice. Her overloaded powerpoint slides were a bore and she rushed through them in class just to get through the material. Overall, I didn't enjoy her class and I would look for a different sociology teacher.
This was an easy class. You have to know how to write fast because she goes through the slides fast, but those good notes will help you ace the exams so don't even buy the book. She does take attendance and she HATES when you walk in late. Overall easy class.
Well Overdyke's class is a real bore. She teaches well but sociology is so boring i can't stand it. I found the class easy, but most people seemingly seem to struggle a lot on her exams. Attendance in mandatory. Overdyke has a lot of sex appeal for her age, so i guess that might keep things interesting
Loved her. 2nd class I've taken with her. Goes through the notes fast, but manageable to keep up. Her tests are super easy and straight forward. Just study the terms from your notes and you will get an easy A. Attendance mandatory but lets you out early almost always. Honestly very easy. I recommend taking her!
This was the class I studied for the most throughout the semester because her tests are 1/3rd of the book each. Very difficult if you don't study over a long period of time.
The class is not difficult as long as you read & utilize the mysoclab tests that come with the book. She goes through slides very fast but if you read it doesn't matter because her notes are the book verbatim. DO NOT SHOW UP LATE, NO COMPUTERS, NO CELL PHONES. she will stop the class to wait for lates & ppl talking, texting etc. She is nice though.
TERRIBLE professor. Attendance is mandatory, lectures by reading her slides (boring), and stops class to stare down anyone who dares to walk in late. Also she is very biased, interjecting her own opinion into a social science class whenever possible. She claims her tests are "straight-forward, no tricks," but the wise will be skeptical of that.
attendance is mandatory. my section met 3 times a week and after the first absence 2 points were reduced from your total score for every additional class missed. coming late and using electronics isnt guna fly either. overall it was an easy class as long as you take notes in lecture and read the textbooks chapters the night before the exam
Good class for people who like to only take notes. Don't listen to her just copy the notes, you'll get an A. You won't put your pen down the whole class. Iff you study the notes and just do a once over on the online practice tests you'll be fine. Would have an A instead of an A- if I knew that before the first test. She let me reschedule the final.
Ok professor, attendance is mandatory and she gives a lot of notes, but the tests are pretty much straight from the text book. She will give you the grade you deserve, overall okay. No papers, just a few tests. Participation not mandatory, but you will get extra credit for it.
Her class was interesting but she flew through the notes too fast on her slides. And she doesn't let you use your laptop. Overall an alright teacher and pretty easy class.
She seems intimidating but she's actually really sweet. You're not allowed to use cell phones or computers in class but her discussions in class are very interesting. Attendance mandatory. Don't bother writing notes, highlight in the textbook. Overall a decent class, just read the book and you're good
I struggled in the class a bit because you have to take a lot of notes and study really hard, and having carpal tunnel this didn't work for me. But Overdyke is thorough, enjoys teaching and loves her students, and is very compromising. Makes things interesting - use your book and highlight to make taking notes easier. You DEF need book.
YOU HAVE TO GET ON HER GOOD SIDE. GO TO CLASS AND PARTICIPATE. IF SHE KNOWS YOUR NAME AND YOU SEEM PLEASANT IT WILL HELP YOUR GRADE. DONT BE LATE. I MEAN IT.. DONT BE LATE. THE TEST ARE MEMORIZATION. IF YOU READ AND GO TO CLASS YOU ARE SET.
Don't come more than 0.000021 seconds late. She's not too scared to call you out. And for the tests most of the answers are from the quizzes (that come with answers) in the back of the text book. I found that out after the first test. Couldve gotten an A or A-. Don't be crazy. Practice/read over the quizzes. Good luck. You shouldnt have a problem.
Guys its not that hard to not use you're phone during class. Just don't be late, participate once in a while, and you're good! Shes very bluntly funny and keeps you interested in the topic.
Loved her! Attendance is mandatory and you can't use electronics or she'll kick you out. Do the readings and takes notes in lecture. There are three tests that are very straightforward, she won't try to trick you. Raise your hand and give a meaningful comment and she'll give you two points which is equivalent to one absence. Take this class!
I hated this class. She rushes through her slides and caters more to the students who don't want to be there. Extremely annoying when it comes to cell phone use. She doesn't make the class interesting much. If you can avoid taking this class than do so. Material for each exam is about 5 to 6 chapter. But material is not difficult to understand.
She rushes through notes, and class gets out early. BUT, she does a bad job covering all content in class. Her tests seem easy, but there are a lot of details she doesn't cover... she's kinda lousy, but her classes are interesting. Your hand will fall off soooo many notes.
This teacher is awful, she doesn't curve the test even though in the beginning she said she does, and you do the same thing everyday. All in all she is not a nice lady at all, try to avoid her a teacher and even as a person at all cost.
best professor I've ever had, really passionate about the subject. make sure you go to class & take notes, use the textbook to study. overall material is pretty interesting. she's really sweet and pleasant to listen to but has no lateness, no cellphone policy. she wants you to pass and like the subject so make sure to ask for help if you need it.
I really liked her. She was very helpful and informative. Really passionate. Fun class. DO NOT USE YOUR CELL PHONE OR TALK DURING CLASS. But she is a great teacher. Would take another one of her classes if I could
She runs her class like a strict high school teacher. Technology is prohibited. If you have your phone (laptopipadetc) out you will get yelled at. She goes through the slides very quickly and she doesn't post them on blackboard making it very difficult if you're not fast at writing.
She is very intimidating. NO CELLPHONES or she will call you out in front of the lecture and make you leave. You have to give a speech in front of the entire lecture. That is a required assignment and you can't get out of it. If you are terrified of public speaking don't take this class. The tests were pretty tough.
The quicker she gets through the lecture, the faster you get out of class which is a plus. Make sure you get everything out of what shes teaching though. No electronics or talking. I give her a 7.5/8 out of 10 because the lectures aren't bad. If you study the material, you will pass the test.
Dr Overdyke acts tough, but she really just wants you to get something out of the class. People complain about her no electronics policy, but I like it. Classes very full so don't take her if you have a problem being on time. She really knows her stuff. Learned alot. I will take her again.
Attendance is an absolute must. I cannot stress enough to BE ON TIME, but she only holds class for an hour or so. I never got the textbook but I went to every class and paid attention so the tests were pretty easy for me. She gives extra points for participation so speak up. Probably my favorite class I've taken since my fm year. I'd recommend her.
Like the funniest teacher ever. Don't take your phone out or else she'll take it away, but you'll focus better.
Overall I really enjoyed Professor Overdyke. She does state her opinion however its only in context to the information given and usually based off of facts presented in the textbook. Encourages participation DONT USE YOUR PHONE IN CLASS AND DONT SHOW UP LATE! Attendance matters and class is a study session for the test so youll want to show up
Doesnt post up her slides and has enough notes to keep you writing the entire class. You HAVE to read the book if you want a decent grade and you cannot for the love of god miss a class bc those 10 points will make a major difference. Extra credit good questions and responses in class.
I deeply hate this professor. No matter what you do she tries her best to make your academic career a living hell. Her class is really boring as well. All she does is read from the textbook and waste time trying to make stupid jokes. I have to drop this class. If I could give her a 0 I would. Do not take, do not take, do not take!!!
She does not really teach the course that much, its mostly all on you. You really need to read the textbook and pay attention and go to class or you will fail.
She's a great professor, but don't even bother trying to text in class because she WILL kick you out if she sees you on your phone. The class is difficult and you really do need the textbook to do well. It's very lecture-heavy but she is open to discussion when it's relevant. She has a clear love for the material and it makes the class interesting.
I am an A student and received a C+ in this class. She ONLY grades you on 3 tests, and attendance. She expects you to write down all 30 slides, and goes fast. Slides are full of definitions, rather than actual content that sticks. She doesn't post the slide, just wants you to read the text book. Don't recommend if you care about your grades.
Renee can be strict sometimes. No technology. The thing I didn't like about taking her class was tests were worth 90% of your overall grade and 10% was attendance. With a grading criteria like this, my overall grade stunk and I worked so hard in that class. I would not take her course based on her grading system.
I took her previously for ASOC115 and I liked her. Taking her again, however, has completely changed my mind. This class was way harder than any 200-level elective should ever be. The exams were ridiculous and I couldn't get above an 84 on them despite being an A student. Also her grading scale requires a 95 for an A so good luck. Worst class ever.
I am an A/B student and am hoping for something in the C range it's that hard. No technology and WILL throw you out for using it, she did it to a kid who was texting his mom back 30 seconds after class started. Her lectures are only definitions and her exams are overwhelmingly difficult. This was the hardest class I have taken here and I'm a senior
Abrasive, rude, and downright useless. You'd be better off trying to learn sociology from a dog.
Her class relied heavily on the textbook, so definitely get the book and read. And she doesn't upload the slides to blackboard. She has strict rules about not using technology; if she catches you, she might call you out or kick you out. Also, attendance is 10% of the grade while the rest is tests.
It's a good class, but your grade in the class is based on 3 exams, 1 presentation, and mandatory attendance. So if you don't do that well on the exams, you'll receive a low grade in the class
Prof. O was very rude when approached, spoke in a manner where it was clear she needed to display her superiority of "I'm the professor with the Ph.D, and you're simply the student who knows nothing". Although not her exact words, they may as well have been! A lot of her own thought based opinions, where she should have been focussing on facts.
Personally, I think she's kind and funny in general. She's very thoughtful when listening to your responses if you participate in class. However she is strict about technology usage; she will call you out. I took another soc class w her last semester and it was much more pleasant. Study terms and pay attention in class and you should be good.
Youre a grown up now go to class take notes I took her for 115 and 342( Soc of Organizations) may be wrong code. She if you go to class you get 10 points automatically on your grade. Just get Bs on the test and youll do fine.
An amazing person. Was my own fault that I had to withdrawal. Very steep grading. 25% for each of three exams, 15% for a final project & 10% for attendance (she takes attendance everyday, but allows one skip). I would take her class again, I would just have a clearer mind to pay attention to my grades before it's too late. Must be aware of grades.
Professor is very smart and seems like she cares about relationships with her students. That being said, this class is odd in the way she passes around a sign in sheet in a lecture hall, attendance is almost 100% mandatory, and three months is just student presentations. Her slides are exactly what the book too, more boring.
Prof Overdyke is an overall nice person, but the way she organizes her class is ridiculous and basically sets students up for failure. The content of the tests is pretty much unknown until you sit down for the test. You're left confused on what exactly to study, which is probably why everyone gets bad grades on the tests.
Horrible human being. She should not be a professor. Dont even bother taking her class. She will drive you crazy.
Good teacher. Three tests based on her power points, the last test is based on classmates presentations but she puts the ones she uses on blackboard. No cell phones/laptops. She curves grades at the end of semester. No showing up late or leaving in middle of class. Aloud to miss one class before it starts hurting your grade.
Shes definitely someone you have to warm up to. Shes extremely strict on technology use. She will stop the class just to call out a student and make them leave. Shes good at explaining things and creating a discussion. She can be incredibly intimidating at first, but once you get to know her you see how much she cares for her students.
Her class was fairly easy as long as you keep up with the notes you will be fine. I got to do my final project on Megantheestallion so that was dope. She was also very lenient this fall semester and ended up changing a lot of due dates for tests and even the final.
She has a no technology rule that she's strict about but other than that as long as you go to class and pay attention you will pass the class.
There are 3 tests that are 30% of your grade each which can be overwhelming. Professor is passionate about what she teaches but is very strict, follow by her guidelines in the syllabus and you will be fine. The textbook is available online and it is helpful to have an idea about the chapter before going to the lecture (what tests are based on)
Prof Overdyke makes Sociology interesting. You can tell that she is passionate about what she does, and she makes lectures fun by adding in a few jokes & stories. Grade is calculated by 3 tests, which are fairly simple if you study and pay attention in class, and attendance is mandatory and raises your grade 10%. Tech isn't allowed in class.
Pushes political views. Does not prepare students for exams. The entire grade is made up of just 3 exams that are so difficult no matter how much you study, take notes, or come to class. Not helpful at all. If you take this class good luck.
the way she sets up her class is TERRIBLE and basically setting you up for failure. You only get 3 exams so if you don't do well on the first 2, you're done. The class average for one of the exams was a 66, that should say something. I went to office hours to discuss my grade and she basically said you'll be fine and didn't care to help at all.
She's a great professor, good at creating discussions. The class isn't really hard. Only 3 exams, if you just study the powerpoint and your notes you'll be fine. She's strict on electronics, so stay off the phone or else she'll kick you out. Also, come to class on time. She has the tendency to publicly humiliate you even if your just a minute late
3 exams and they are all multiple-choice questions. Just show up to class because she does take attendance and makes you do reaction statements. As long as you review the PowerPoint, it will be very easy. She is also very easy to talk to.
very strict on technology, do not get caught on your phone because she would kick you out for being "disruptive". Loves giving unsolicited political opinions. Can ramble all day about nothing and expects you to give a presentation in a LC class. You have to purchase 2 textbooks and of course one of them she wrote. 3 exams and 1 presentation.
heavily favors female students when giving extra credit. Extremely boring and painful to sit through class
Long lectures, no homework, all grades are from attendance and 3 tests the whole semester
Beware she is tough with her rules, like electronics, attendance, and etc. However, if you can get past that and if you do the ungraded readings or study the slides well it is an easy A. She is also an amazing lecturer. She grades on a few things so it is risky but I found it to be a blessing, especially with how easy the tests were.
She is strict but the class itself is super easy. Attendance is mandatory and taken every single class! NO HOMEWORK, 3 exams which are straightforward material straight off the slides (posted on blackboard), and 1 final presentation that she prepares you for in class. Literally one of the easiest and least time consuming classes I have ever taken.
WORST PROFESSOR. She does not allow electronics in class which by this point in the 21 century, get over it, electronics are part of younger peoples lives. She makes you buy her book that she wrote and no you cannot find it anywhere for free. Lecture slides are not helpful but she is very into her work so she will work with you on the presentation.
This was such an easy class. You just show up and pay attention to the lecture. I just skimmed through the slides before taking the exams and did well. There are 3 tests and they are all mc questions. She is available after class to go over the test so that was good.
Her exams are like 70 multiple choose in class so we get hour and half and the questions it self are long like reading paragraph. She doesn't give study guide or anything. She doesn't care if anyone if anyone is struggling or not all she cares about the attendance sheet should be sign in
According to her if you show up to class you will get 10 extra points but she doesn't understand the fact that 10 points can not save you if you do bad on the exams. Half of the time she is arguing with students for coming late. Her exams are hard to pass plus there is no study guide and she care less if your struggling in class
Professor Overdyke comes off as harsh but as long as you show up on time and pay attention you will be fine. You only have 3 mc tests and are graded on attendance. You are not allowed any electronics or she will kick you out. You do not have to participate in class, but if you do she sometimes will award a few extra credit points.
I did not like this professor very much, and my peers felt the same way. There are no electronics allowed in class, attendance is mandatory, she doesn't give homework. She honestly treats us like children. Made us buy her book just so she can profit but the slides already had all the info.Overall not a great professor and I regret taking her class
First, if a professor says not to look at the ratings on this website, they are lying. LOOK AT THEM. Not only she is a terrible lecturer, she is also rude and disrespectful to her students. She is also childish. It should be really crazy that after the first day of class, more than half of the students drop the class. That really says a lot.
The class is basically used as a review for her tests. Your grade is made up by attendance and the tests she gives throughout the semester. If you don't show up to class it heavily affects your grade but if you participate you can earn free absences. She has a very clear no technology in the classroom rule and has a strict lateness policy.
Grade is 90% from three exams and 10% from attendance. Each exam is 60 questions and very difficult. Strict no technology rule. I recommend taking someone else and avoid this class at all costs.
Don't take for your own good.
Don't take this class if you need it for a GENED/because your interested. The amount of times I went to class and felt uncomfortable and upset with the professor was frequent. Her tests were not difficult, but she threw many confusing questions not in the textbook/notes. This class gave me more stress than upper lever classes. Not worth it
Professor Overdyke is very lecture heavy. No electronics at all or she will call you out and kick you out. She is nice overall, just strict. The course is mostly based off exams. Which sucks because if you slip up on one, it can ruin your grade. Lectures are interesting if a soc major... as long as you attend class and look engaged, you'll be fine!
Amazing professor
She is very passionate about Sociology. Strict no technology rule in class. You are graded on 3 tests only, no homework. No extra credit offered, because there is a class curve at the end.
Professor Renee Overdyke is unfit to teach, acts childish, extremely temperamental.
I was excited to take this class last sem, but I 100000% regret signing up. Her teaching style isn't great at preparing for tests. She reads off slides, I can do that myself. And her tests are somewhat easy, but she throws in hard questions just so you don't get an A. Also, she made me feel uncomfy with her vibe and rules. She was also very rude.
Had her at albany. She is extremely childish and doesn't know how to teach a class. supposedly she got arrested and fired. Not a surprise as she wasn't the brightest person
