Dr. Jin is the best teacher I've ever had/makes complex tasks easy to understand
He is so grea and helpful. Even the worst student can do well in his class!
Very clear and precise in his teaching which made it easy to understand. Enjoyable teacher and very easy class.
Overall, a good professor. Homework is the key in this course, as all quizzes and tests are based on them. Provides thorough review sheets for exams, but does not do in class review. Ask questions, and you will be fine
he's really hard for this class, and the tests are nearly impossible
The easiest grader in history. Dont listen to the other people. He is super easy and amusing
Easy class. Study two days before test and get an A. Didn't study at all and got a C. Funny in class too because he sometimes doesn't understand you. His tests are sometimes in broken english, the way he talks, which is funny as hell.
not very hard at all... reviews the previos lesson for about 10 minutes every class period... quizes weekly that are really easy... and as long as you have an understanding of material tests are a breeze... you will crack up b/c of things he says... TAKE
Dr. Jin is a wonderful, helpful teacher. He explains concepts very well. He is always willing to help a student outside of class if they need that. I enjoyed his class, enough though the material is hard.
Really nerdy but an easy teacher
His class is very easy if you watch his examples. He goes over everything and his quizes are straightforward. Definatly try to get him if possible!!! He has a bit of an accent, but it makes the class funny, not any harder!
such a nice guy and a good teacher. math was my hardest subject and i got an A. it took some effort but he was always willing to help. and if you look at examples from class, you will do great.
Lectures can be confusing because of a language barrier, but overall a real nice guy. Quizzes come from class notes and homework problems. Tests are based on the same. Helps you when needed. Strongly suggest as teacher!
i really hated this class, i've heard of other people who like this class with other professors but i thought he made it way to difficult
such a nice guy, always available, explains everything, and answers all of your questions. his chinese accent and suspenders will make you laugh!
Awesome teacher! Easy to follow and understand. EASY quizes and tests!!!!!!!! Go to class and you will easily have an A. He has a very laid back attendance policy, tells you how many days you can miss (based on your grade in the class).
great guy, smart professor, makes difficult concepts easy to understand. wish i could have him for all of my classes
The best math professor in the department. Really seeks to help his students - study notes, homework problems, and quizzes and you will be fine!
He is a fun guy. Cartoon caracterish. The class is easy so its hard for him to mess it up. If you just have to get math out of the way hes the man to take.
To all non-math majors this is the best professor for Elementary Stats! He is VERY straight forward, funny, and very very helpful! I made a D is math 103, but a B+ in here! He's great, get him if you can! :-)
Good guy, I recommend him as a teacher
I like him alot
Look under Renling Jin for other comments-- he's a great stat prof
When asked a question, he restates what he has tried to explain for 10min w/out any clarity, the language barrier is like the Berlin Wall unfortunately. I don't like the class very confusing and I'm a decent math student. You can't help but laugh at the jumpy quick movements though.
soooo funny to listen to... he refers to digits as "nice numbers" and is very quirky. he will explain things over and over again if you ask him, he's very helpful. he gives a decent review before tests also
Good teacher. Very straight forward. Writes step by step up on the board for you to copy in your notes. Give's study guides before tests. Tests mirror class notes. His attendance policy is tricky, you can only miss one class, and there is a HUGE LANGUAGE BARRIER! Only understands english math terms!
An extremely nice and funny guy. You'll get used to his accent very quickly. Explains concepts step-by-step to make it easy. Will explain fully if you have questions. Take him!!
Great teacher...I am not good at math at all and have struggled in the past, but Renling Jin took the time to give me extra help when I needed it. Makes class fun..uses funny examples, example bart simpson...take the class if u don't wanna take a boring math class!
Jin is a good teacher and an all around good guy. He doesn't quite have a great hold on the english language, but that doesn't effect your learning at all. He gives weekly quzzes and the tests reflect what was on them. A good stats teacher for sure.
I'm notoriously bad at math, and I'm getting a B in his class. Do the homework he assigns, study before each exam, and you'll do fine. He's a good professor: very nice and understandable, despite the accent.
I was scared at the beginning of 104 b/c I suck at math and his accent didn't help, but I stuck w/him and got an A. He is so nice and his tests are not tricky at all, just like the homework. He is so adorable and will make you laugh. I loved him, one of the best math teachers I have ever had! I would highly recommend him, such a nice guy.
The suspenders made my life. Every day, rain or shine, he donned the suspenders. Renling is a good man, and makes up really funny names of towns for his math problems. You got to give the man props that's for sure, and compared to whatever stats teacher my suitemate had, Renling is a good teacher.
Suspenders...nuff said. great guy. he dosen't have the best grasp on the english language but math is pretty straightforward anyway. Does not give any tricky questions on tests or hw's. even better, he dosen't even collect hw. definently a winner
Accent=BAD news had to drop the class
Probably the BEST math teacher I have EVER had. I am AWFUL at math and I have an A in the class. He is so easy and helpful I actually enjoy going to his class. Hes so cute with his suspenders and he tries his best to make the class laugh. DEFINATELY TAKE HIM!!!
I LOVED DR. JIN! he is so cute and funny, plus he is very helpful and his class is easy. He lets his students use a formula sheat on a some of the tests, and was overall my favorite teacher first semester.
Dr. Jin is awesome! He has an accent, but you get past that. He is so cute and funny and makes the most off the wall analogies. Take him if you get the chance!!!
he's a good teacher but his first language is not english and it is quite humorous/distracting
Statistics is not easy for me in general, but he definitely helps make it easier. You are quized weekly on the material, and if you know how to do the quizes then the test should be very easy. I definitely recommend taking him!
he is a really good guy. he is very nice and helpful, he really knows his stuff.
Hard class. I love math, but stat was really hard for me. Jin's accent didn't help. Quizzed weekly, which helps. Tests are hard.
Class is reallu easy. I went in not knowing anything about stats but I got a 100 on the first test it didn't get too much harder from there. He isn't the easiest person to understand with a bad accent but he trys. Quizs every friday but he goes over everything that will be on it RIGHT before you take the quiz so easy 100s. I reccomend him.
I love him! He is a great teacher. He doesn't move on until everyone understands the material. He does have an accent but it doesn't inhibit his teaching. I would definitely recommend him! He's great!!!
good professor. he has an accent so just make sure you take lots of notes. goes over quiz problems before the quiz. there is a quiz every friday and he drops the lowest one. highly recommend taking this professor.
TAKE HIM! He is awesome. I would take him again in a second!
Really liked him. He made funny little jokes here and there. Some tests are hard and his accent was tought to understand at first but he helps a lot and goes over problems before taking the quizzes and gives study guides for the tests.
Professor Jin makes Stats SO easy, and I'm not a math person at all! Once you get past his accent he's an amazing professor, crystal clear, and helpful. I didn't do a single homework problem and have an A in the class, don't waste your money on the textbook. Come to class and pay attention and it will be a breeze! he's adorable too!
Tests are easy if you take the time to study. He provides all the material for the test in his online notes. He reviews the material before each quiz. Amazing Stats teacher. He has an accent, but goes out of his way to make the information clear to everyone.
He's the best professor I've ever had at CofC! I got an A in his class, and I never even thought I could be good at math. It's the way he teaches, he is amazing! 1 quiz every week, drops the lowest one, puts his notes online, explains everything until we get it, makes jokes all the time; best class ever.
Best professor at CofC!! I got an A in his class, it was definitely the best class I've ever taken! Take him.
Best class ever! He puts his notes online so you can go back and review everything. He is such a great teacher, I understood every single thing in his class, and I wasn't even good at math. Take him :)
He is my favorite teacher at CofC! He loves teaching, and you can tell. The lowest grade I got on his tests was a 96, and that wasn't because his tests were easy - they are actually challenging, but because he knows how to teach hard subjects like math. Take him!
I was always good at math and I have always enjoyed my math classes. However, I am not a fan of this teacher. I have taken this course at my old University ( transfer student) and I had an A in the class and understood exactly what was going on. NOT WITH THIS GUY. The quizes each week bring down my GPA and I hate attending this class.
Great professor. Knows the subject well, knows how to teach it, knows the problems students often run in to, and helps to fix them. There are 3 quizzes before each test, the the test is the combination of quizzes with different numbers. Found this math class to be very easy where I have had difficulties before. Not sure why he's getting low ratings
I hate math, but I really enjoyed this class. It was really easy. GO TO CLASS, take notes or print them out beforehand. 3 quizzes before the test. Tests are the 3 quizzes with different numbers. Drops lowest quiz and test. Attendance sign in sheet (just get a friend to sign you in if you skip). Lots of review before test. Super helpful
Very sweet man but his accent was little hard to get over. Very funny! I don't think he meant to be though...
Such a great teacher! Definitely one of my favorites, he is extremely nice and tries to be funny during class! He makes it easy for you to understand the lessons, and then puts he’s exact notes from class online for you. The quizzes are exactly what you need to know for the tests to do well
Jin is straightforward, and easy to understand in spite of what some people say. Like most math teachers he just flows through the powerpoint and does problems on the board. Test n quizzes reflect notes. Precal sucks but he's a good teacher.
He has a very strong accent, hard to understand often. I went to him for help several times and he was still no help to me. I would NOT recommend this professor for this class.
got As on all the test and failed the departmental final. he's really boring and gives no extra credit. im sure there are better pre calc teachers
This class is pretty difficult but he is a good professor. Make sure you pay attention and do practice problems out of the text book. There is a quiz every week which can make or break your grade plus three tests and a final. Homework is optional.
Thanks for my D+, Renling. I really appreciate the fact that your class ruined my GPA.
He was very confusing (hard to understand). There were quizzes like every other day so if you didn't do well on them it hurt you. There were only a couple test. No other grades so if you didn't do well on the quizzes and tests .. oh well.
He was very hard to understand during class. Not helpful at all when I went into his office hours for help, told me the formulas to memorize and that was it. Failed the class with a 34%. Taking it again and have an average of 95%. Horrible teacher. Do NOT take him.
Prof. Jin is great for a Stat class. He might nit be the best explainer, but he works out several examples of each type of problem which is really helpful, and asks to make sure that everyone understands. He lets you use your notes on the weekly quizzes, and the final. No HW. Easy A. He is also very sweet and is readily available for office hours.
This class has hard material, but he made it easy. Open notes on all the quizzes, exams, and tests. The tests come straight from the quizzes. He is good at explaining, though he might get confusing sometimes, but he made this hard fairly easy. As long as you do all of the hw, you are guaranteed an A on the quiz and just about everything.
There are at least 20 problems out of each section of each chapter that are suggested (and if you don't do most of them you pretty much fail) The class is 4x a week and 20 problems per night really adds up if you get behind in anyway. The class was HARD! Quiz every week and he breezes through material like you should already know it.
Oh, Renling! Absolutely loved him! Very quirky and passionate about Stats! He grew up Shanghai so his English not so good, but easy to understand. He assigns quizzes one a week, but is very thorough in class about exactly what each one is, and tests come after 3 quizzes. All material comes straight from the quizzes. EASY. Great professor!
Renling is a very sweet man. There are 11 quizzes total and he drops the lowest one. After every 3 quizzes there is a test on that material. He is very flexible when it comes to outside help. If you don't come to class then it's harder to pass. He has a bit of an accent, but I was able to understand. He's funny and tells jokes to lighten the mood
His class is fairly easy, but the material can be challenging. He uses multiple examples and breaks down everything into detail. You can do almost all of it on your calculator and he teaches you (unlike some other professors). I would definitely take his class.
Professor Jin is awesome. All of the grades in the class are either quizzes or tests, the homework (and textbook) are optional for practice. Jin is Chinese so every now and then he can be hard to understand, but he's also hilarious and he likes to make silly jokes and stuff. I highly recommend!
Great teacher, try's to be funny, strong accent but he will tell you at the beginning to leave if you can't understand him, he goes over all quizzes, and re goes over what is on the quiz before you even take it, gives quizzes every other class, hw optional, class was easy, on final exam you get a full sheet of paper to write on and bring in!
Super nice and grading and tests are super straightforward.
Really nice guy. As long as you follow along and ask questions you should do well. He will go over things as many times as necessary.
He is a really good professor, but his accent is really thick. If you have never taken statistics before or have no knowledge of statistics, I would recommend taking a different class with a different instructor. It is really hard to understand him and he doesn't do very well explaining things.
There are quizzes in class every week on the material you covered up to that point. They are not bad at all if you pay attention. The problems he goes over in class are EXACTLY like the ones he puts on the quiz. Total of like 12 quizzes, 2 tests, one is the midterm, and a final. It is pretty easy cause all of his notes are on OAKS & easy problems
Renling Jin is the best professor at CofC! There are weekly quizzes, but he teaches everything you need to know on the quiz right before it. He always has office hours and is willing to reteach in class so everyone understands. Even if math isn't your thing he makes it so simple. Easy A, it would be a mistake to take another stat professor.
Jin is kind of frustrating. If you do plan to take this class understand that before a quiz, he will teach you a brand new lesson right before you take it. I didn't do his homework (it's optional) it would just confuse me even more. I relied on his review before the quiz which did help. Also, be prepared to memorize a bunch of equations....
His class is calculator based so if you do not have a TI 83 or 84 calculator you will fail. With the calculator it's a easy course. Assigns homework but it's not mandatory but I highly recommend doing a couple of the problems a night. You have quizzes like every other class period but he goes over the quiz before you take it.
I have nothing but positive things to say about him! He really cares about his students and I recommend going to office hours if you do not understand and he will explain everything. All on calculator and Hawkes homework. Easy A if you actually show up to class and try.
I loved taking Renling Jins class because he made sure students understood the material and what he expected from a student was extremely straightforward. Gave study guides, formulas, and allowed you to use a calculator for everything. Would take professors like him for the remainder of all my math classes if I could.
He is a super sweet older Asian man & wears suspenders almost every day so who cannot love him?? His classes are very lecture heavy & asks questions people do not usually understand. He is very excited about math & willing to help in his office hours. EASSSYY grader but the online homework was nearly impossible.
Uses a free online textbook. Quiz every week. English isn't his first language so sometimes you may have to ask him to reexplain a concept differently or more slowly. Gives partial credit if you show your work. Doesn't grade homework.
Such a sweet man. Some people may complain about his accent being hard to understand but to me it wasn't difficult at all. Statistics isn't easy as is but he is ALWAYS willing to help. During this online learning he has been super accessible and understanding. He posts all the notes and quiz/test answers onto oaks after class.
Ringling Jin is an okay professor especially for math. He gives quizzes between each tests so theres around 11 quizzes and 4 tests. He gives homework but its optional. All of his lectures and notes are posted on OAKS so if need to go back and look at things, its easy to. I would take him again.
For a math class being taught online this semester, I really enjoyed it. I will say we only received two grades this semester + the final, but I am pretty sure he changed his syllabus due to Covid. Overall, he did a good job at teaching clearly and always posted notes and lectures on oaks.
Dr. Jin is super nice and is a very fair grader. Expectations for the test are very clear and all questions on the test follow a similar format to that on the study guide or homework. I was very nervous to take my first real analysis course, but he made it a good introduction into the field.
Professor Renling was a great teacher and took attendance a few times throughout the semester. His study guides perfectly matched the two tests given during the semester so if you go over them to figure everything out you will be fine. Use the material such as the study guides, the quiz answers, and Minitab Express and you will get a good grade.
I have never been a math person but have done very well in this class. All you have to do is go to class and take the notes and ask questions. You have a quiz once a week which is nice because you'll have other grades than test. He is super helpful if you go to his office hours and ask questions. You can tell he really loves teaching his students.
This professor was super nice and helpful. You have quizzes every other class but he always tells you what's on It before hand and answers any questions you have. He also assigns homework but doesn't check or grade it. And he also doesn't take attendance and posts his lectures.
He is a great person; very sweet and funny. But if you are hopeless at math, take someone else. He is hard to understand and I couldn't find a way to take comprehensible notes. I never understand the way he explains things and I never know what to ask when I have questions. I'm completely lost in his class. I might have to retake this course
He is the sweetest guy ever. He gives a 5 question quiz every week, but they typically are very easy. The lowest quiz drops at end of semester. He has 3 exams throughout the semester. If you put in the work you should do really well. He offers office hours like everyday.
I love this man with all my heart. Go to his lectures and laugh at his jokes, because he deserves it. He is so passionate about math and explains everything so well. If you go to class you will pass the quizzes and test easily.
He is one of the sweetest professors to talk to. If you miss a quiz he lets you take it whenever during his office hours. A little hard to understand sometimes but if you pay attention in class you will do well.
Very easy. Quizzes every week, 2 tests, and a final. His classes are incredibly boring but he's easy and he's such a sweet, adorable old man. I'd take him again in a heart beat. Love that man.
He wants you to succeed. Tells you what to expect on tests and quizzes so no curve balls! People complain about bad grades but that is because they never go to class, so go to class and everything should make perfect sense as his examples in class are just the quiz/test questions. I extremely recommend him if math is something you struggle with!
Prof. Renling comes to class with a smile every day and is super wholesome in general. Although I am not good at math and really struggle I am not going to give him a bad rating because he is a good prof. Super flexible and always happy to help during office hours. Quizzes are exactly like the tests so study those and you will be fine.
Professor Jin is such a great professor. He makes class fun and is very accessible after class. He also posts his lecture notes, as long as you go to class and pay attention you should do fine in his class.
Everything on notes is indicative on quizzes(11). Almost verbatim. Tests are indicative of quizzes(3). Goes over quiz before you take it 20 min later. No tricks. Never used book, only his lecture notes to study. Need TI calc. Hate math, he makes it easy. Very cheery and kind. Office hours are beneficial. Test 3 is not cumulative, just 3rd test.
As someone who is really bad at math, he made it super easy to understand all the topics. There's 11 quizzes in total but he drops the lowest one and 3 tests. The tests go over the quizzes and he reviews the quizzes before taking them. As long as you pay attention, anyone can pass this class. He also tells jokes at the end of class, he's the best!
I hate math but he made statistics seem easy. As long as you go to class and pay attention you'll get an A. Quizzes every week but he tells you exactly what are on them and the tests are all the quiz concepts combined. He is also so nice! Great professor.
Renling Jin was super funny. We love Orange Kingdom!
He was super sweet. His lectures were pretty boring but he makes it an easy class. He goes very slow and explains everything in detail. He does lots of review before quizzes/exams. Study the quizzes and you'll do good on the exams. There is no required homework just practice if you need it. Definitely take this class!
Just take him, he is so so sweet and is very knowledgable about statistics. Great professor and guy!
This is the best professor I have ever had. He genuinely cares about his students and their success. PLEASE TAKE HIS CLASS! He is so kind, very funny, and extremely intelligent. He is easy to access outside of class time and is always willing to help you. Never thought math could be so fun!
Professor Jin is a very kind professor, however his lectures are hard to follow and his gradebook is made up of 10 point weekly quizzes and three tests. I would not recommend this class for anyone who has trouble in larger settings or who has difficulty with test taking.
I usually hate and never understand math but he made it easy and enjoyable! Promotes calculator use, doesn't make you show work, weekly quizzes but they're easy and he goes over everything that will be on them, and you go over content before taking them. If you go to class and lightly study, you will be just fine!!
Professor Renling is a great math professor! The homework is not mandatory but helps, and the quizzes directly reflect the tests so super easy to be prepared. One quiz a week and 3 tests total but if you come to class and pay attention there is no reason not to get a good grade. He also provides the textbook and lets you use your phone calculator!
