Dr. Kelly is very nice and somewhat funny, all in all the class is easy but the final is completely irrational. Have a good grade before going into the final or else you probably wont do well.
This intro to chem/phys class was harder than it should have been. She does not grade fairly. When writing up you lab report, make sure you have ALL the infomation down, otherwise, she'll take off points for the smallest thing. There was barly any extra credit opportunities. As long as you do the reading, you should be ok with the quiz/midterm/fina
I learned a super lot about CHemistry. Dr. K is very, very helpful, and explains things as many times as I need it. She's fine, but I was still able to focus on the lecture.
Dr. Kelly is an excellent teacher. She really cares about her students, and she shows a great deal of enthusiasm for her subject.
Even though I do not have her for the lab part, her lectures are clear and actually understandable for a hard subject like Chem. The class does come with alot of work, but the lectures are understandable.
A LOT OF QUIZZES ABOUT 20 PTS EACH. BUT THEY ARE TAKE HOME AND U CAN WORK WITH ANYONE. IN THE BEG. I WENT TO ALL THE LECTURES BUT I RARELY PAID ATT. FROM THE MIDDLE TOWARDS THE END I ALMOST STOPPED GOING EXCEPT TO TURN IN THE QUIZ. JUST READ THE TEXTBOOK AND READ HER POWERPOINTS. I GOT A B ON ALL MY MIDTERMS. SHE TELLS YOU WHATS ON IT. PRETTY EASY
Dr. Kelly is the best teacher I have ever had.
Dr. Kelly is fantastic! She really gets into her lessons. It makes me want to take more chemistry classes.
she's awesome!
Dr. Kelly puts so much energy into her class, and she really loves what she does. I think she's awesome.
Dr. Kelly is awesome. She makes class interesting and is always willing to help. Some of the concepts are a bit tricky if you dont like chemistry or are new to it, but she makes it so clear and easy to do.
Dr. Kelly is a great teacher! if you ever need help, she'll be there to help you. she tries really hard to make the class interesting and fun for us
For lab, she is totally cool! Wants everyone to get an A and wants to be done with class like everyone else. funny too!
Dr. Kelly totally turned me on to science. I was never really into it before, but now I'm really psyched about taking more science classes--because of her!
She's so incredibly nice! Her weekly quizzes are a bit tricky, but if you have the book and internet access, you should be fine. If you're not the book-reading type, just attend her lectures. Everything is in the ppt, and the ppt is posted online. Very helpful and tries hard to make lectures interesting. Extremely approachable. Study for exams! :)
I wish she was teaching another class I could take next semester b/c she is one of the best profs I've had here. And when I thought that I would take a chemistry class, I was petrified. She worked wonders in easing my fears and breaking through to how interesting all this stuff really is. Besides, she's young + pretty. That doesn't hurt!
Dr. Kelly is amazing. She's extremely helpful and is an all around great teacher. She grades a bit tough, though.
She shows a lot of enthusiasm for chemistry as well as her students. It is quite difficult to follow her lectures at times because she goes off tangent with what she is actually trying to teach. Other than that, she is a great teacher.
It's obvious that she likes chem and she wants her students to like it too. Lectures are full of fun demos, but she herself is disorganized and the material is not layed out in a straightforward manner. Usually some extra credit if you go to lecture. Quizzes and exams were horrible. Decent teacher, but take Chichester if you want to make it clear.
She loves chemistry and her lectures are not too boring. I hate chemistry, but with her witty humor she actually makes this dull subject interesting. She grades hard on labs, so make sure your answers are thorough and clear. The exams are hard. You need to study. However, a 69% is a C- and 71% is a C. I got an 79%, but it turned out to be a B.
A teacher who loves chemistry. Nonetheless, her lectures are full of fun demos. Her teaching lacks clarity to be ready for the exams. The practice exams she gives are almost totally different compared with the actual exams. Nice person, but if you want to pass, take Singmaster, even though she's hard, she prepares you well for the exams.
Horrible teacher. She's nice but she thinks everything's a joke. She doesn't prepare you at all for her tests and her practice test are not even close to her actual test. She teaches through power point which is impossible with Chem. DON'T TAKE HER. TAKE SINGMASTER SHE'S HARD BUT PREPARES YOU FOR WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW.
Her lectures are too fast but you can find the slideshow online. BUT her class is always behind, so for lab you have to do extra reading so you know what you are doing.
I really like her as a person but i dont learn very well through power points which is the way she teaches so i didnt do well in her class
I hated her teaching methods. I loved her as a person but her teaching was just awful. Chem is not meant to be taught through powerpoint. Her practice exams had barely anything to do with her actual tests. I've taken Singmaster before and rather have her teach than Kelly.
Prof. Kelly is a decent teacher. Her lectures are based on power points. It was most helpful to go online and read them before going to class, and then take notes only on what she says (or you could bring a voice recorder). If you read to book and actually do the assigned textbook problems, you be fine.
WORST TEACHER EVER!!! OVER 65% of the whole class FAILED HER CLASS. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
Very nice teacher. But truely you HAVE to read the book, you cannot rely on her powerpoints only. All her powerpoints are straight from the text anyways. You can miss a lecture and just read the book and copy the powerpoint online and be okay. You just have to be careful, though do NOT get behind on reading. Start right away.
The class was hard and she had a tendency to go off topic every class period. Only show up for participation points and bring your laptop because she will put you to sleep. She also made Organic chemistry 25% of the final after teaching it for a week. 65% of the class failed that semester.
She's nice, but her lectures are worthless. If you read the book, look over the power points and sit in on Singmaster's class whenever possible, you'll pass. Her exams aren't hard, but they generally don't cover anything she went over in class, which is pretty frustrating. I say take Singmaster's class if you can, at least you'll be learning!
The hardest class I've ever subjected myself to. She went so quickly through the lectures that I found it pointless to go to class. Started reading the text on my own, studied for hours each day, and still barely pulled a C. She's nice, but I suggest going to Singmaster's lectures to maximize your learning time.
Pretty easy class, tests are all multiple choice. Lectures are boring power points. Focuses alot on concepts, so study the book. No homework.
Tests are difficult and her lectures are boring, but make sure you go to class. You HAVE to read the book in order to do well on the tests. Do not get behind on homework and reading or you're going to have a VERY difficult time! However, she is very helpful and a decent teacher.
Professor Kelly doesn' really teach. You mostly have to read out of the book and teach yourself. For the tests and quizzes you have to study two weeks in advance to pull a decent grade. Most of the class fails. Don't get behind in the practice problems and sign up for the workshop for extra practice. Don't take this class if you don't have to.
Kelly is a nice person but she is a bad teacher. She will take a whole class to discuss a simple concept and then barely mention the important topics. Most people including me dont do good. Although Singmaster is hard take her cause u will actually learn something. TAKE JORIE FEILDS FOR LAB INSTRUCTOR!!! She helped out so much!!!
Tests are based on the lectures--I've had no problems, seems pretty straight forward. She is very helpful and posts discussion summaries for us to review. Uses a mix of powerpoint and overhead--makes it easy to understand. I didn't find her boring, but that's me.
Her tests (multiple choice) are pretty much straight out of the lecture/powerpoint. She makes concepts just as/more important than calculations on tests. The quizzes are graded much more harshly since they are short answer. Kind of a slow pace of teaching so i would suggest going to workshop to catch up for lab and calculations.
Kelly is a nice professor but doesnt teach the material well. Singmaster may be hard but you will learn more. I liked kelly but i dont know if I learned anything in her class. Deffinatly take Chem 10 b4 chem 1a.
Definitely one of the best teacher I ever had. I took this class because it was required for my major (Biology) and I heard lots about it before I took it. I can't believe how scared my friends made me now that its over. Dr. Kelly made it EASY and INTERESTING. I hope all my fellow Biology majors take her for Chem 1a.
Very approachable. Seems to really like what she does. Makes chemistry fun.
Awesome. The best professor at San Jopse State.
Chemistry i understand but taking it with kelly confused the hell out of me she might seem like a nice teacher but don't get her wrong..she'll test you on things she barely goes over in class if I could i would have chosen another professor but due to my schedule had to choose her.second time around..first time i got a c- with her should have known
One word: AWESOME! I took another Chem 1a class with another professor and got a low grade, so I thought I would take it again to raise my GPA. I wish I had taken Dr. Kelly the first time because I feel like I wasted an entire semester, and lived through hell in that other class. Recommended highly!!!
Super nice. You can tell she likes what she does. She gives lots f examples that help you understand complex topics in chemistry.
You can tell Dr. Kelly has a lot of enthusiasm for chemistry and really wants to help students learn. The lectures are easy to follow, she gives plenty of examples, and she always makes time for students during office hours. One of the nicest Chemistry professors you'll ever have!
Okay, so for the few comments below me...what a bunch of liars! Dr. Kelly analogies on electron configs...about how the "older siblings are always on the first level"...she pretty much left her students in the dark when it came to her lectures. I mean she only goes over 2 problems that takes up most of the lecture. P.S. Her teaching+slow=Fail.
The Good: funny lady, extra credit opportunities, curved multiple choice tests, some quizzes are take home. The Bad: her pace is either too slow or fast- briefly goes over things that are much more detailed on exams or overcomplicates things that could be summed up in one sentence. The Ugly: class average on exams <68% with curve
Don't listen to the whiners, two hours a week of lecture isn't nearly enough to cover all of the material, that is why you read the book and get outside help. That said, I busted my a** for a solid A. Remember kids, this is a weedout class, maybe you should switch to the mickey mouse business major if you can't handle it
Very nice teacher. Always willing to help. Has the students in best interest. I would definitely recommend her.
Dr. Kelly is a really great teacher and I wish she taught more chemistry classes because I would like to take her again.
LOL please take Singmaster for CHEM1A, you'll see a HUGE difference. Singmaster>Kelly + Mayor.
Kelly is probably one of the least helpful teachers I have ever run across. I went to her office hours to get some help for our exam and she made me more confused, by the time I left her I was worse off then I was before going in. I stopped going to her class and my grade went up? enough said, she sucks
She knows what she is talking about... disagree with other ... her tests and exams are based on concepts that were lectured on! She assigns practice problems form the book! Do them if you want to do well on her tests. Going to class helps in the end... students always want similar practice problems as exam problems, not happening with her!
She was an okay teacher. The grade is based solely on tests. She recommends some homework problems, but it isn't collected. Her lectures follow the textbook and doesn't really go in depth. She only solves easy problems and gives hard problems on tests. You mainly have to self-study.
Professor Kelly is a great teacher. She's nice and dorky, she makes the class go by fast and her demo's are cool! The material is challenging but you can pass if you put in the time to study!I definitely recommend her.
Terrible professor. Take my advice and avoid her at all costs.
ignore the terrible comment. she is a great professor. i never read the book and i just follow her lecture and go to workshop. i ended up with a good grade. i don't even like chemistry. she try to be funny all the time which is dorky. she teaches fast at the beginning and fast at the end. test are fair. it just stuff you should know from lecture.
She's good at teaching, but many students were given a shock(including me) by the first test. It seems easy enough learning the topics in class, but make sure you do the homework questions she posts online, or you will struggle on tests. Don't bother trying to justify your answers in office hours, she doesn't take kindly to it =/. study hard!
she's a good teacher during lecture but the tests are insanely hard, and she doesnt really provide any clarity or help during office hours. She should also realize that if 75% of the class is failing she's making it too difficult
Seems like a good teacher at first but as time progresses and the concepts become more difficult, you start to realize that she's not that great of a teacher. Goes on many tangents, lots of analogies, and overall, is never truly helpful. Tons of worthless powerpoints so take good notes. Overall not too bad but not good either.
The class is fun, and she does in class experiments that are pretty cool. Lectures are interesting. The problem are the tests. I did the homework, and pay attention in class, but the tests are too hard. Most of the time, they're so different from the homework or class that it shocks you when you read the problems.
chemistry is a very hard course! i found kelly to be very friendly, funny, and uses a lot of analogies to help clarify some confusing concepts. chemistry is a course not many love, but her in class experiments and her dorky (funny)sense of humor kept me laughing day after day. she is very passionate about chemistry, and tries to get you to be too.
She was very clear about what she expected us to know. She does powerpoint slides and many test questions came from them. It was nice that she gave online homework and gave us weeks to do it. Her pace was a bit behind the labs. She is very friendly and treats everyone fairly, doesnt make exceptions for anyone.
She is a nice professor. Her tests are a little hard so u have to do all the online homework. Her slides are very helpful. She responds to emails very quickly. She keeps the class interesteing with her somewhat entertaining jokes. Her demos are pretty good too. You should take her class.
General chemistry is difficult to understand but Dr. Kelly describes the concepts so well that it connects to the calculations. I really like her teaching style because she connects our material to the labs. Although her exams may be difficult, they are very manageable and easy to do if you pay attention in class. I got a B- in this course.
She was alright
Dr. Kelly is a great teacher but she makes you work! Lectures are very clear and great at explaining concepts. Tests are a little tricky and requires you to really understand the fundamentals to do well. For most people to get an A it will require some extraordinary effort. But if you put in the work you'll definitely get a lot out of this class.
Go to class for free iclicker participation points! She makes lots of jokes... laughs at them herself... One time she did a magic trick! It was amazing! You have to do Owl hw online to get homework points, and they help A LOT! Exams are easy IF YOU STUDY! She's pretty. She could make a good actress! She's not mean. Always prepared for class:)
Resa is not a good professor, she covers material in class but in order to even have a chance of passing you have to study independently. I do not recommend taking her. She goes off tangents as well when we are limited to 50 minutes in class. Resa also does not really care if you pass or not, she expects a good portion of the class to fail.
Exams are fair but she really does not care if you pass or fail. She can get very defensive! Not a good professor at all. If you want to stay safe, take a different professor as I know a lot of you do care about your professor and your grades! Also, you have to self study A LOT and she never really gives the answers to lecture questions.
Go to each and every class, get the iClicker credit (don't buy the remote, its free), do all the online homework, pay attention in lab, and go to each seminar for the quizzes. This class takes a large amount of time, but if you do all these things, you'll have no problem. First 3 exams are tough, but the final is multiple choice and a breeze.
The class itself was cake if you care enough. She always makes an an attempt to help students out during office hours. No pop quizzes only 2 max 3 online quizzes that give you at least 2 tries to get the best score. Class isn't mandatory but content is repeated very similar to exams. All online homeworks are easy and equates to 1 whole exam.
Do not take her
She has a dry sense of humor but it's great. She tries to keep things interesting but is still thorough with her explanations. She does assign homework every lecture and it is a bit pricey but i didn't even do any of it and still got a good grade.
Fun and upbeat. She does assign homework but that may very well be the reason why I was able to pass her class. If you go to all of the lectures and do all of the homework assigned, you'll be ready for the exams when the time comes. She also has things called 'Clickers' and uses them to give you participation points. FREE POINTS FOR SHOWING UP!
One of the best prof I had. She's very well organized. Made boring and hard topics interesting and understandable.
1)gives an outline of each lecture to help study 2)a lot of opportunities for extra credit 3)learn more from online homework than from her lecture 4)does not give enough time to answer clicker questions correctly (this can hurt grade) 5)confusing lectures because she jumps around from one topic to another without clear pauses in between
Lectures are organized very clear in what you are expected to learn. Overviews are posted in Canvas, that help you study for the tests. To prepare for exams, also review iclicker problems, examples in class, and hw problems. One problems is that she tends to over analyze simple ideas while more complexed ones are just mentioned. STUDY HARD!!!
So i've had kelly for chem 1A and currently, chem 1B. trust me when i say to only choose her as a professor if you are good at teaching yourself. i find her class outlines to be very unorganized and sometimes i even email her when she has mistakes on her quizzes (2 times this semester already). shes very nice in person but her classes are hard.
She never ended her lectures on time so at the end she would rush and give us new material and sometimes expect us to know it by the next lecture. The online quizzes she made us do every couple of weeks were harder than her exams. The online homework was actually more useful in teaching the material we needed to learn in class.
CHEM 1A: Slower than the other profs. No lecture ever ends on time, & she teaches new things at the last second. She'd show a powerpoint slide at the very end and say you're responsible to know it for the exam. Uses MasteringChem online hw, which kinda does a better job teaching you. She does have humor, and seems to care about students' learning.
Very dry humor. She will keep you a minute or two late. Cant finish her power points. She gives online homework and quizzes which will help your grade. Extra credit doesnt happen. She does clicker for attendance, can be done away from class. Test average every time was in the 50s. Have to teach yourself. Behind for lab. Will not take her again.
Very nice, but terrible at teaching. She tries to rush everything and introduces new concepts 2 min before class ends and expects you to master them. Final is cumulative and not as bad. Her exams(3) are very hard. Behind on concepts and teaches the content AFTER we do the lab. Avoid!!
I honestly learned everything in this class on my own. The only reason I showed up to her lectures was to have a broad idea of what I needed to teach myself. Also, she gives participation points in class through clicker questions. All her lectures are rushed, but It's able to pass this class if you do well in the labs.
I'm not sure what Resa is doing teaching chemistry. She's basically doing psychology research to see how students visualize chemistry concepts. She seems to not understand real chemical reactions and products. She shows a mediocre understanding of chemistry, which is reflected in her defensive and avoidant behavior when approached with questions.
Honesty she seems like a nice person but she really doesn't know how to teach. She goes over things in class so fast that you think you understand until you get to the test. Online textbook and homework software is where you actually learn things. She also uses clicker questions which she doesn't give you enough time for and takes the percentage.
Please don't take. The one good thing I can say is that she's funny/entertaining as a professor. But honestly go to someone (anyone) else for chem 1A because its one of those things you need a good professor for and she just aint it. I kid you not, we "learned" new concepts 5 mins BEFORE CLASS ENDED bc she spends all her lecture time showing videos
Might as well be an online class. Teaches more about concepts when its not going to be on exams(60% of ur grade) Lectures consist of mostly clicker questions(graded& count towards grade.) Have to learn on your own. Powerpoints unhelpful. Lots of online hw. She is funny, but I wouldn't recommend taking her unless u have a very strong chem background
Lectures are all right and a lot of information is introduced last-minute (literally). We got behind lab, but it was OK. Homework and quizzes are online--don't slack off here. Dr. Kelly does care about chem/how her students are learning but her teaching style doesn't jive with everyone. Buckle up and do the work if you want to pass.
She really cares about her students, but most of us just doesnt prefer her method of teaching. Her lectures are very complex and hard to understand. She can just teach us more simply because were just Chem1A. I dont like how we are graded on clickers when she hasnt taught. She tells us to guess and ask out neighbors. But no one knows anything
Only take her if you feel comfortable teaching yourself because she rushes a ton of info last minute. She does upload slides that go over lecture, but theyre very unorganized and missing details from the book. To pass her class, read the book to understand the concepts, and then do ALL of the homework + practice tests before an exam.
Honestly, everyone who gave her bad reviews are all lazy. Her pretests literally cover the exams but y'all just don't try on it. Exams are easy. Her lectures are concept based because her homework teaches us the math. Y'all just don't do it. There's not enough time in the semester for her to teach everything. She's fair, always replies to emails.
Dr. Kelly is absolutely awful. Her lectures are composed of less than 8 slides in which she talks about in a 50 minute time period. As the class got further in the year, her teaching methods became way too fast-paced to the point where the majority of the class had no idea what she was talking about. Overall disappointment.
dont take her class worst ever useless for an engineering student
She is passionate about teaching but her style is mediocre. She jumps from one concept to another without finishing the previous one. New concepts are introduced five minutes before class ends and she never finishes slides. Expect to answer at least three clicker questions per lecture (counts toward grade). Homework is directly from the textbook.
Her lectures are kept very brief since 50min isn't enough time to cover things in detail, but that's what the modules & book are for. There's a lot of homework, but it's easy points if you actually do them. She's a very easy-going prof that is easy to talk to. The book isn't really required-- I never opened it and was still able to pass the class.
The class was asynchronous and most of the lecture time was used for group discussions. Depending on your mates, you might have a good time or a bad time. Lecture is mostly her going through the module and sending you into breakout rooms to learn the module together. Great conversations with this professor during officer hours and genuinely cares.
Professor Kelly is approachable, gives tons of feedback and is almost always available for questions. However lectures, while mandatory, feel unproductive and aren't effective in teaching students much. The Canvas modules are where the most learning happens, so prioritize doing them early. Once you get behind, it's really tough to catch up in Chem.
Chem 1A is probably one of the toughest courses in college, but Dr. Kelly made it a much easier and less stressful class. She's the only teacher that doesn't give midterms, but there's a lot of homework and it's really easy to fall behind. It's really important to pay attention in lectures because she tells you everything you're expected to know.
Professor Kelly is very good at making demonstrations and going the extra mile during office hours to ensure that you understand the material. There is a lot of group work in this class, so communicate with your group if you aren't there because you will be docked points. Overall she is a good professor, but be prepared to put in the work.
Dr. Kelly is a fascinating individual, although she comes with a few caveats. Her teaching style, while subpar, is a good catalyst for student learning. YOU have to put the work in, she guides you along.
Chem 1A can be hard if you're lazy and miss class, but if you show up, study for tests and quizzes, and attend her office hours whenever you don't completely understand a topic, you'll do great. She does a great job of helping you get a fundamental understanding over any topic. She offers quiz retakes, so you don't really have an excuse if you fail
