The goal of the class is for you to get a B. Either you do really poorly on the midterm (multiple choice), or the paper. Be prepared for a great lecturer, but not a very helpful prof. He knows his stuff very well, but since the class plays to everyone's weaknesses, it's hard to differentiate yourself. I would'nt recommend the course, maybe the prof

SO many quizzes that are super long and really hard, not sure if it was just because the class was online. Each one felt like a mid term and there were 5. Lectures were pre recorded and readings were all from the textbook. Prof is extremely smart and passionate and funny, wish classes had been in person or live sessions. Final was fair.

Loved the class and loved Prof. Brynen. The prerecoreded lectures were clear and information packed. Live sessions are worth attending for extra quiz info. Quizzes are quite challenging but feasible if you keep up with readings and lecutures. Research paper topics were fascinating. The prof is extremely kind, understanding and easy to reach.

Before taking any course with this Prof, I would highly suggest looking through reviews about his work on McGill Daily and other platforms. Well worth looking into. Interesting background. Quite a harsh grader too. If you are an A student, it is never in your best interest to take courses with him.

I wasn't sure what to expect in this course, since I had never designed a game before. However it was very interesting and I learned a lot. The game project involves a lot of work, though (and you can't leave it to the last minute).

The material is really interesting. The quizzes and exam are quite easy, but the group project can be a challenge unless you assemble a good group. I like the in-class exercises and extra-curriculars (more courses should do this).

Different from many poli sci courses, more focused on how policy actually works, coordination, and practical challenges. The prof has a lot of experience in the field, and he often illustrates lectures with examples which are useful. The "textbook" and readings could be better, but they're all free online.

Lectures, lots of readings, quizzes, research paper, and final exam. Lectures are good, and Brynen is always willing to answer questions on anything about the Middle East. The course could have been more interesting if it didn't have the country case studies (and associated long textbook chapters), but if I'm honest I learned a lot from those.

High-calibre professor, and an amazing lecturer. Information is dense, but workload largely manageable, especially as lectures are recorded. Devotes time to current affairs in the Middle East in addition to class content. In all, an enriching, and highly informative class!

Lovely guy and really passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. You cover a lot of material so it's good to have an understanding already as he goes quite fast, but he's very helpful and the textbook has everything you could need. Not entirely necessary to attend lectures but helps a lot. Although tough, probably my favourite course this year

He always goes into tangents making it hard to focus on the already material heavy class. It also does not make any sense for a 300 level poli class to have 2 in person tests (multiple choice purely based on memorising the textbook) + a 4-5000 word research paper (harshly graded) + a 2 final essays

Brynen was a great teacher. His lectures are really interesting but most of what he asks on tests comes from the book. The tests aren't hard but if you don't do the readings you won't do well. MAKE SURE TO DO THE READINGS. Unfortunately the readings are VERY long so if you can get notes from others it helps. He's understanding & gives extensions.

You can tell Prof. Brynen knows so much about the subject area from this class. However, as someone with minimal knowledge about the MENA region, I struggled a lot at the beginning to grasp the important details of the class as Prof. Brynen goes off tangents and it is hard to differentiate the important material from such tangents when studying.

I certainly learned a lot from the class. However, the reading is way too much. The two midterms were mostly based on readings, which is two textbook chapters per week, which you must read IN DETAIL to do well. It took me about 2-3 hours per reading including taking notes. It is also hard to differentiate what is important and what it not.

Prof Brynen is incredible. Hes passionate about what he teaches and is very smart. He talks a lot & fast so its hard to keep up but what he says is interesting. In my experience, its hard to remember all the info for the tests but try to make comprehensive notes for each topic. Overall tho hes super sweet and the class is definitely worth effort.

Professor Brynen sets you up for success. He makes sure that your chances are the highest they can be. He knows how an in person exam is stressing and how it affects your answers. That's why he wants to make sure you get as much time and stress-free environment for your exam making it take home. He's the best there is.

I really appreciate his efforts to be fair and objective with so much going on in the Middle East. Struggled a bit with the first midterm (there's a lot to read and remember) but second one was interesting, and the research paper topic I chose (Arab youth politics) was really interesting. Very helpful outside class.

An amazing prof, one of my favs @McGill. So enthusiastic and engaging in lectures even if 1h30, and also very talkative in OH. Very clear on what he expects from students, but the multiple choice can still be difficult. Has it so the paper(s) are worth more than the multi c you can still do well. Class was so enjoyable.

Conflict simulation is one of the most interesting and unusual classes I've ever taken at Mcgill, and perhaps the only one where I felt was really having to apply my poli sci learning to practical challenges. The game project is group work, which I usually don't like, but my team was great. Make sure you start working on your project early, though!

Prof. Brynen is an amazing professor. He remains available for students and provides great feedback and guidance. The game project is pretty content heavy and takes lots of time, I definitely recommend taking this class as it is a interesting class with a unique project but would advise avoiding taking it if you have another heavy content class.
