He should retire
No Comments
Yeah, he should retire.
When students asked questions he would defer to the other professor because he didn't know the answers. But even I knew the anwers with no more background in bio than a basic high school class!
So boring. It's impossible for me to stay awake in that class. He never really answers questions, just hops around the topic.
All right guy. Lectures are boring... Easy tests!
I didn't think he was all that bad. In fact, I thought he was funnier than St. Clair. But I liked St. Clair, too, so that's ok. Get a good TA, and you'll be fine.
If it's not bad enough that you have one boring teacher, you have 2! This guy is worse than St. Clair though. Seriously, don't even go to class because all you'll end up doing is sleeping the entire time!
I hate Biology period. But I did fine in this class. Stopped going to lecture afte the 2nd test. Its a joke. Just went to lab every week (get a good TA) and attended a TA review session before every test. Don't make this a more difficult class than it is.
Very knowledgeable guy. Intersting to listen too. Really cares about students
This class has gotten harder. They've made the tests harder and have made more work, which is totally unneccesary. Lectures aren't fun at all. I've slept through nearly all of them. But it's a GE, so get a good TA.
Just plain boring. Ocasionally when I wasn't asleep I thought he was kind of funny. The class in general is just awful. It's badly organized and they're trying to make it way harder than it should be. I hated it.
Terrible class. Badly organized, repetitive, very basic material, and stupid projects that don't teach you anything at all. You don't even really need to go to class -- it's just a very dumbed-down version of what's in the textbook. GE, unfortunately.
The evening course is easy because there are no labs to attend or anything like that. The tests are easy. It's just like taking a high school bio class. I highly recommend this class if you aren't a big science fan.
I slept under my parka during lectures.
Class was horrible. I didn't learn anything. Didn't keep it interesting...useless projects. Tests were over stuff never even talked about. The first 10-15 minutes of class he talked about what we were going to talk about that day..but he didn't even do it
What a boring class! I hate Biology as it is, and this class certainly did not help. He is boring. The projects were useless, and the tests were dumb.
He was a good professor. I enjoyed his lectures. He explained things well and took time to work with students. There were a few off the wall questions on his tests. But overall it was a good class. I enjoyed having him as a teacher. Don't be swayed by the previous comments. HE was not that bad!
Class isn't very fun but he is a way nice guy. He helps students and really wants them to excell.
Bio 100 with Cates and St. Clair is overall a boring class. St. Clair is more interesting but Cates gives you more information to take notes on. Lectures are boring, tests are difficult, and Labs are pointless. Not my favorite class.
Nice guy, but terribly boring. Cannot learn Biology in that environment from him. Waste of time with hard tests that do not reflect what is taught.
This class made me very frustrated. I listen and study HARD for the tests but the questions are impossible. Didn't learn very much the whole time. Hard to follow when assignments are due. If at all possible, take different class/teacher or take night class.
If I could do it over, I would have taken a smaller class, like a night class or an honors class. The tests are ridiculously hard. I usually attend class, but I learn best from reading the textbook.
The whole class was about stupid memorization of words and phrases. Nobody cared whether or not the student understood the system. And so were the tests
very boring lectures, prof takes it upon himself to wake you up if you are sleeping in lecture, (there are 500 kids in the class)labs are pointless, as are projects.
This class was extremley dull. The only entertainment was watching Cates wake up the students who had fallen asleep. The TA for my lab thought that this class was as pointless as much as myself. I would avoid this one at all costs.
The class from hell. The lectures were boring, the tests were hard and TAs were useless. Cates and St. Clair nice fellows but their class is terrible. Alot of busy work, reminds me of a high school class (and we are treated like high schoolers). All I can say is, I'm glad this class is over!
Very boring class...lectures are incredibly easy but the tests are really hard and very particular...reading the book and lecture material doesn't help very much. Labs have NOTHING to do with lecture...I would recommend a different class.
PLEASE don't take Bio 100 from him. I know that for non-majors, it's a GE requirement, but I'd do anything to get as far away from him as possible. He and his parter, St.Clair, are horrible. The TA's are just as bad. This is the worst class I have taken in my educational career. Stay away!
Cates is pretty funny- yah the lectures are boring, but you have to admit hes way better than St. Clair Just do well on essays and go to reviews and you should be fine. I only studied a few hours for each test and with the essay and few extra points given, I got B's on them- it's really not that bad
confusing, the class is nothing but busy work. the material is easy and you learn nothing, he mught mean well but teaching is just not his nich in life
the test questions are pretty specific to readings or lectures, but the review sheets are almost exactly like the test questions. the labs have nothing to do with the lectures, but they give good applications. the people that do bad in the class never go, or are too lazy to study at all.
Just read what the person on 01/24/05 said.
This class was miserable. All he did is read the notes off the powerpoint. He really likes huge words and likes to make himself sound smarter than you. I didn't learn much from his lectures. Tests were not on the lecture info, or from the book. Not the greatest bio class I have ever taken.
This class stinks. And because it's a GE, there's nothing you can do about it.
Nice guy, but the class was horrible. Lectures were incredibly boring; tests were extremely difficult; labs were absolutely pointless. I learned nothing from this class. It's a ge, but I heard that Honors 266 (or something like that) fulfills it and is not as torturous. This was the worst class!
Nice guy, but the class was so dumb. You have to take it b/c it's a GE, but I'd definitely take it from another professor just b/c Cates and St. Clair make you do the big poster project that other bio professors don't. The poster project is that bad, so yeah take the class from somone else.
Hated this class--he was nicer than St. Claire though--avoid class at all costs!
Not a particularly difficult class; nice teachers but boring lectures. The poster assignment is painful and unconnected to the rest of the class.
Your grade will basically be determined by the TA's. Make sure you have a good one!!! Professor cares about the students and the subject, but because of the size you will have very little interaction with him.
I never thought I could hate a class this much!!! Professor Cates is a nice guy, but I think his lectures must only be worthwhile if you REALLY like Biology.
A worthless class. You wont like the teachers if you hate tree-huggers. The tests are designed to make you fail, and to trick you into picking the wrong answer. The only way to get a good grade is if you luck out and get a good TA. Like everyone else says, the poster assignment is horrible. Take the alternate GE classes! Avoid at ALL COSTS!!!
it wasn't that bad. just study the packet the lectures are taught out of and you'll do fine. sheesh! just do the assignments for lab and you'll be fine. easy A.
This was the only class this year I hated! He has good intentions, and is a nice guy, but is so monotone in teaching and skips around. We'll be learning about the process of a cell and then that week in lab do a reading about Global warming. SO hard to pay attention, and so hard to learn anything. Poster project is ridiculous and so time consuming!
This biology class has a lot of work. It's not just reading and tests like other GE classes. Your grade really depends on the TA, because the papers and the other assignments are the only thing you can do really well on. Tests are pretty much ridiculously hard and have nothing to do with anything from the lecture or the book. Good luck...
I HATED this class. There were so many extra projects, I guess to keep us entertained. Prof. Cates usually just stands there with Prof. St.Clair and mumbles. Sometimes he doesn't know what's going on. I would rather have my teeth pulled than take this again.
Him and St. Clair are nice guys but this class is totally ridiculous. There is a ton of busy work that has nothing to do with anything. It's like a giant high school class. Media labs are ridiculous, they take forever and have nothing to do with the tests. Avoid if possible.
Dr. Cates is the best teacher ever!!! I loved his stupid jokes and he was always willing to help the students. I went to his office every week with 3 other people and he was always happy to help. He is a great teacher and I wish more of my teachers were like him!
If you like sleep this class is for you! Your grade is dependent on you TA, study!!
boring
Do not take this class if at all possible. It's busy work and the tests are ridiculous. Way too hard for a class you are probably never going to think about again. If you get stuck with a tough TA then your life will suck. THe poster sucks. This class sucks don't take it if at all possible.
ditto all the other bad comments- pretty nice guys, BORING lectures, pointless lab work...just read the book ..that's your best bet for passing
The teachers would forget to go to review sessions themselves, and on the same day get after students who showed up late to class. The lectures were not helpful at all. Ask a TA what the test will be like because Cates and St. Clair won't help, (unless you ask them in person) and I don't care to ever meet them in person.
Dr. Cates is a good teacher. Go into this office if you need help and he is always willing to meet with you. I was always gone because I am involved in sports at BYU and Dr. Cates always helped me. He is a good guy.
the class is not worth it. take some other class to get rid of the GE requirement
Prof. Cates is a good teacher, but the class sucks. Bio 100 is riduculusly hard. They expect you to know way more than you should have to know from a 100-level class. I never met one-on-one with Prof. Cates, but I'm sure it would help.
Totally unorganized class. It was like a Jr. High. Avoid this class if you possibly can because you will spend a lot of time doing rediculous busy work.
Class is a GE so you will have to deal with it, but the good news is that it is not curved. You will basically get out what you put in. If you hate Biology and have no desire to learn, then this class will suck. But if you put in some minimal effort then you should do fine.
YAWWWN!! Sorry, ever since I took this class, just hearing the word "biology" makes me fall asleep. Horrible lectures. Impossible tests. Perpetual busy work. Disgusting class. Any questions? Oh, and don't forget about THE POSTER! If you offered me $10,000 to take this class again, I wouldn't do it. Yes...it's that bad.
I thought Cates was a lot more interesting to listen to in lecture than St. Clair ever was. The class wasn't too bad...just lots of work. The tests are fair, I usually got in the 80-85 range. No curve, but the lab grade will bump it up some. This is one class I'm glad to have behind me.
The class takes some work. You have to actually apply the material to questions and learn how to think instead of memorizing everything. It ain't high school. When I needed help I would talk to Dr. Cates. Email him he is great with doing reviews and helping students out.
Funny & nice, but not hands-on professor at all. Busy work in labs.
It's been a year and I'm still recovering.
Very nice guy...not the best class. Its a lot to handle, but not so much that you can't get an A with hard work. But hard work will be the key - quite a bit of busy work. Hope that you have a good TA. The exams are challenging, but measure your knowledge well.
I'm offended by the person who said that the people that complain didn't work hard. I worked so hard and took time to talk to my TA's and I have to say i learned WAY more talking to the TA's then in lecture. I would rather the TA's teach it. this is a hard class with too much busy work involved. Plan 5 or 6 extra study hours than normal 100 classes
ahh, the joys of Bio 100...Just a few things about the class: 1. Tests are impossible 2. Although lab seems to be just busy work doing the work really helps your grade 3. Poster presentations are pointless by easy 4. Hope for a good TA 5. Lectures are useless and so are exam reviews
Boring, belittling and non-helpful.
I took the evening class and he covered the material in the syllabus to a T. The lab was way more helpful, even though most of the work we did in there was pointless. Go to your lab because that's the only way to make up for any bad test scores.
I don't know what these people are talking about. Dr. Cates is very clear. He covers material on the tests to a T. His syllibus is straight forward. He is funny. He is willing to do whatever to help. Take Him!!
The class basically sucked and I didn't really enjoy the teachers either. That what I get for taking this class as a junior and not when it was still in its experimental year.
If you're thinking about taking this class and reading what everyone's written, don't have second thoughts. They all have no idea what they're talking about. If you study a tiny bit, you can get B's or A's on the tests, and the lab work is all an easy A. I'm an English major who hates science and I easily got an A in this class. It's not that bad.
I took a team-taught section from Cates and St. Clair. Cates only taught one or two lectures. From those times, I think he's an okay lecturer and very good at answering questions, but I would take from a different professor if possible.
Realize that all of the babies who complain about this class probably hate biology and science. If they knew anything about science and were really going to study it, they wouldn't be in a Bio 100 class. That said, if you are a baby about science, you will probably hate it, too.
awful teacher. take it from someone else if you can.
Easy class. Cates was the only lecturer in my class, and he was obviously passionate about the subject. He tries to make things relate to life and make sense. He seems scatterbrained sometimes, but he tries hard and will go over things if you need help. My TA was horrible, but I still aced all the tests. The syllabus is detailed and so are lectures
You don't need to go to class to do well. Just go to the TA review sessions for each of the tests, and you're good. Writing sections of test are hard. They're not too bad. Multiple Choice is a joke.
Prof. Cates cannot teach simply. I would not recommend this class to anyone. Take bio from someone else. Didn't learn anything from his lectures. You won't either!
Lecture is useless, long, and really boring. Most likely you will not understand anything until the TAs teach you.
Professor Cates is really passionate about Biology, but he probably shouldn't be a teacher. Very hard to understand and confusing. Random tangents were frequent and often the material talked about in lecture wasn't clear. GO to the lab reviews with the good TA's or you will hate this class. They saved my grade!
Find another bio teacher. Seriously. Prof Cates is a really nice guy & he's really into Bio - but the tests & assignments are ridiculous. I didn't learn anything except that there's no way to ensure a good grade. I was suprised (negatively)by my grades too many times. If you do take him, have fun trying to read his mind.
This professor is a very nice individual and cares a lot about biology, but his lectures are confusing and nowhere near helpful. I felt like I didn't learn anything.
You rarely if ever use the book. The class is fine, but he doesn't go very in depth with the information. The class has very little homework though. Usually just one assignment per week that taks 20-30 minutes.
So boring time seems to flow backwards as you sit in a thoughtless stupor. After 40 minutes of class, you still don't know what is going on. There is no direction or focus in the class. I'd say scatterbrained is a good adjective to describe Dr. Cates. He's a great guy, but pretty incomprehensible. The class wasn't hard though, so that's good.
The teacher was ok but the class is a waste of time. It's a shame it's a GE. It is really easy but I didn't learn a thing. My high school biology class was much better and harder.
lectures were absolutely pointless, as was the textbook. rediculously easy class and all you need is the syllabus
Easy class if you can overcome the complete disorganization of the course. Cates' lectures are pointless and boring, opened my book once, never touched it again. Take notes in your syllabus every now and again, just go to a TA to explain the simple concepts and you will get good test grades and HW scores
Get help from the T.A.s if you don't understand anything and it will be the easiest A ever.
Worst class I've taken in 5 years at BYU. I got 90% on the multiple choice parts, the 50% on the short answer. Problem: 2 short answer questions make up half your test grade. Each time, he told us 1 of the short answers wouldn't be on this test. He's really a useless professor... you don't learn anything. Really, he should just quit.
There are no words to adequately explain how horrific, banal, and irritating this class was. Cates co-taught with St. Clair... what a disaster. Glad it's over. Wasn't hard - just... sigh. My TA was great though, kudos to him for helping me pass this asinine class.
Dr. Cate is an awesome teacher! I went into his office all of the time to get help. He is so nice and willing to help you understand. There were probably 8 of us in there once or twice a week and he spent an hour or so helping us. If you don't get a good grade it is because you are lazy and don't listen. They tell you everything you need to know.
Lecture is a waste of time. Class is very disorganized. He talks about Lipator way too much. If you dont get a good TA to explain everything...GAME OVER.
It was hard to stay attentive during lectures. I really didn't learn anything. After a while I quit going to them, and just made sure I paid attention in the TA lab. I learned a lot in lab. Kristin is a great TA. There is a lot of extra credit, so take advantage of that. It is fairly easy to get an A, not much work or studying required
Some students would say that he goes off on tangents, but it's because he's trying to apply biology to our every day lives. (Sometimes what he said went over my head.) Class discussions really are more like discussions, allows for a lot of participation even in a large lecture class. Treats class as if everybody loves biology as much as he does.
Although you usually don't learn that much, it's an easy class, which is nice if you're only taking it for a GE credit. The final is a paper, and after each quiz you can basically forget everything you just learned. the quizzes are only worth around 30 points too, and they're super easy. if you're looking for an easy class, here it is.
He is a nice professor, but I thought the class was a waste of time. The tests were really easy, but I didn't learn much in the class.
Great teacher. Extremely helpful. I went to his office with a bunch of students for more help and he was always super helpful. Took extra time to explain things. Great guy!
Really boring
Dr. Cates is a really great professor. He cares for his students and wants everyone to learn. If you ever need help just talk with the TA's or him personally and they will really help you out!
Nice and easy class for a GE. Dr. Cates outlines everything in class so it's not hard to understand. The tests are pretty easy, but you HAVE to go to the Friday labs to do well. The only annoying thing was postings on Blackboard like announcements or reviews. They did things last minute sometimes. Not a bad class though.
He cares about his students, but he can't explain anything. Lectures were never relevant, informative, or interesting. I stopped going but got an A because I crammed for the tests using his incredibly useful study guides. Study guides are the key. Don't do the assigned reading; it is also pointless.
Cates cares about his students, but his lectures are hard to follow and understand. The key to pass the midterms is to go to the TA's review sessions. Attendance is not mandatory, but he has a few iClicker quizzes that will count for your grade. Class should be fairly easy overall.
Easiest class ever. He makes the topic interesting for those who aren't planning on majoring in bio. The iClicker quizzes are a joke and very easy. Great class to fulfill GE--take it!
This class is awesome, they have completely redone how they teach bio 100 and i loved it. Take it for sure, it is a pretty easy class but it is really interesting and actually applies biology instead of just memorizing stuff. there is no textbook, but attendance is mandatory.
This class is pretty easy, but I also learned a lot. Professor Cates is enthusiastic about his subject and tries to get the students involved in their learning. Two lectures are with him, then you have a Friday discussion lab with a TA.
Dr. Cates is an excellent professor! He and his TA's changed this class around to make it more interesting to the students. Everything actually teaches you how biology works. Best GE class I've taken at BYU.
great class! You have iclicker quizes every lecture, so go to get points. Lectures are usually interesting. Tests are easy because you know exactly what is on it. Every week, a paper is due, its not hard though :) 3 tests total, no final. easy class. take it from cates!
The TA's really revamped the class. They made it so biology is applicable to everyday things so you actually LEARN. Dr. Cates himself, is pretty entertaining too (he really likes plants, so don't diss them). Have your IClicker ready for attendance points and go to your labs. Tests aren't too bad, you know what's on them. Take this class!!
Dr. Cates teaches a great class! It was really a great experience learning biology from him. He is such a personable professor and his TAs are so nice and helpful. The course material was easy to learn and very comprehensive. Not having a textbook and just studying from powerpoints was amazing!
Dr. Cates is alright. I really liked the TA's. I feel like they did a lot more than the professor did. Attendance is mandatory because you use an iClicker. No textbook, which is nice. The class is a little boring though.
The class is really easy. Dr Cates and the TA's do their best to make the class student friendly and interesting.
The class is one of the best I have taken at BYU
If you have very little interest in biology, this class is for you. I hate sciences, but somehow the TAs and Cates made everything seem so straight forward. In fact, during the semester I enjoyed this class more than the classes I was taking for my major. ha!
He gets a bit rambly and is hard to follow sometimes. But the set up of the class was interesting and he tried to make the principles applicable to our daily lives. I liked this class a lot and I hate science classes.
Dr. Cates was one of the most amazing professor I could have asked for! He trys to make class interesting and makes it apply to everyday life TAKE HIM!!!
I did not like this class at all. Professor Cates was extremely boring and I didn't learn anything. I attended class every single time and did all of the homework. I had to cram for the tests using the TAs reviews and nothing that I learned in class. No text book (which was nice) but the class is political. I did not enjoy this class.
Most boring class I've taken at BYU. Most useless and unorganized too. Cates doesn't know anything about Biology and it shows.
Don't really know what the last few were talking about. Cates has taught biology at BYU for a long time I think so he obviously knows it lol! TA reviews were way helpful. I talked to Dr. Cates once about a personal thing and he was way more understanding than any of my other professors (english major). Take Cates!
He is such a sweet man. Unfortunately the class can sometimes be a little boring, but the TA reviews are extremely helpful. This was a great science class, and you learn a lot. You learn how to make an educated opinion on a lot of touchy subjects.
Dr Cates is a good professor. Sometimes he will forget to include important topics in his power points, but as long as you go to the TA's before each test you'll have a guaranteed A. This is one of the few professors that i have ever had that taught me how to be a person instead of just memorizing useless information
Best Professor ever...this dude knows his stuff and trys to make it interesting! Take it from Cates!! Anyone who hates him obviously didn't try even a little
I'm not a science person and I found this class pretty boring and confusing. Lectures were difficult to follow because his slides were essentially googled images of biology stuff that sometimes pertained to the the topic at hand. His attempt to connect it to real issues was nice but sometimes felt like a stretch. Your TA makes all the difference.
Study and you will do well.
Good teacher. He cares about his students and is willing to work with you outside of class if you are having problems.
Great class. If you put in the time it will show on your tests. The TA reviews are very helpful and Dr. Cates is willing to work with you if you are having troubles.
Dr. Cates is interesting. He refers to the TAs a lot, so he might not actually know what he is talking about. Class attendance is mandatory because of the iclicker questions that count as participation points. Dr. Cates is really helpful and provides help for struggling students. The tests are all about application. No text book!!
This class wasn't that bad. There is a weekly assignment and iclicker quizzes every class day. No txtbook. The tests weren't too difficult if you put the time into studying for them. Your TA grades everything and so if you get a good TA then you will be able to get an A.
Dr. Cates is the man. Class deals with real life biological issues. Not just tedious textbook application. You study before the tests, you'll be OK. Not hard, not easy.
BIO100 is a pretty easy class. There's no textbook, so that's saying something. Just go over the powerpoint slides and know the keywords for the tests and you'll do just fine. His lectures are pretty scatterbrained sometimes and he'll refer to the TA's a lot to confirm something that he probably doesn't know... but overall he's not bad.
I don't consider Cates my Bio teacher because his TA's do EVERYTHING. Cates just goes through the lecture slides but the TA's really teach you. So if you get a good TA then you'll do fine in the class. Memorize all the slides and know EVERYTHING because his tests are tricky story problems. This 100 level class will take up most of your time.
No text book. Weekly assignment and online quiz. The lectures are kind of pointless except for the iclicker questions. go to the review sessions before a test and know the key terms and you will do fine.
Tests are all off of powerpoint slides, which are somewhat unclear at times. Each test is has 25 multiple choice questions and two short essay questions. Your grade on the essay questions will really depend on your TA. Some are way easier graders than others. My best advice is to go to the TA review sessions. Overall, not too hard.
There's no textbook, which is nice, but you might have to borrow one if you don't know a great deal about biology to begin with. You have to go to class for the i-clickers. The whole class is based off a series of PowerPoints, which are unclear at times. TA's are super helpful, just go to them before the tests and you'll do great.
Cates isn't hard. Just attend class and study the slides/voc words for the test and you'll do fine. I would recommend visiting your TA, since they grade written part of the test. There are weekly assignments too but they don't take long and if you do them, they'll boost your grade. Easy IClickers for class participation as well.
He's not as easy as people think but he's also not like super hard. Everything from the tests comes from the powerpoints. Just memorize the powerpoints then you will do good. He's retired after this semester btw.
I absolutely LOVED his class. He teaches his class so it is more applicable to real life. His lecture questions basically provided a study guide for the test. As long as you go to class and lab, do the assignments, and study his lectures before the test, you will do fine! I learned so much and even considered a biology minor after taking it!
No text book, so hard to study for tests. Tests are very hard, and only has his power points to study. Cool how he applies biology to life. Have to go to class to get i clicker points
Prof Cates was pretty good. He was a little confusing when he was trying to explain certain topics. But it was cool how he applied everything to real world situations. Lots of TA reviews, and he tells you what essay questions are going to be on the tests. i'd recommend him.
