This guy is not difficult at all as long as you show up to class, take a two trips to muesuems, and write your paper. Tests are directly from lectures- plus no final!
Take Koontz! 'Nuff said
No Comments
Easy to understand/learn from; enthusiastic about the subject; tests reflect material covered in class, required readings, and outside assignments.

rex is bad, he gives you too much work and his lectures are hard to listen to, i found myself sedating myself heavily before each lecture. between the ****ness and 40000000 word papers (no exaggertation) he was horrible
I liked him. People who are smart take him. Just because he makes you do work doesn't make him a bad teacher, it makes him an effective teacher. and I truly learned the beauty that man can create. He is a wonderful teacher, and it is a great class!
he was ok, if you dont mind doing work he's good. you gotta write two pretty long essays or "art cards." two major tests. 3 or 4 super easy online quizzes where you can use your notes and book, and a bunch of extra credit. i got an 87 and did ha
I loved his classes! He made them intersting because he has a wealth of information to give and he is passionate about it. Not only that, but he welcomes student comments during class, and he has a very dry,(very funny), sense of humor!
His easy to talk to when you don't understand something from the lecture, by e-mail or in person. His test's are online, so I was able to see my notes during the test.
Ive taken two of Koontz's courses, and I am crazy about him as an art history prof. Anyone who says otherwise is a complete slacker idiot. He has a passion for what he is doing, and he does it well. Papers and exams are easy so long as you attend class.
Excellent. Love his teaching style and especially his vast knowledge of art history. He definitely knows what he's talking about. Its incredible to be taught by some one with so much passion- can't help but rub off on you. All this kinda makes him sexy, too.
First off, I don't like art. But Rex is a great teacher! He loves art and is interesting to listen to. It's great to have an instructor that loves what he does and is not just there to get the day over with.
4 papers 10 quizzes 2 test = too much time
Dr. Koontz's lectures are fascinating and you should take advantage of them while you can. The best art history teacher at UH and the most approachable. The class is very user friendly and entertaining to boot! It also helps that he's the hottest hipster/academian around.
Class is boring, and seem like eternity but if you take notes it will help on the tests. Online quizzes are easy but are too time consuming. Essays require you to go to art museum. First two are easy, second two require almost impossible research. Resaerch early or you won't find any books. Not worth it for something you'll probably forget quick
I recieved an easy A in the class. I found the lectures to be a bit boring but it is important to go to the class since it only meets once a week. The online quizzes were very easy if you used all your online and book sources. The papers are long work but easy work. Do xtra sources on your papers and he will give you a lot of xtra credit.
fun class, only once a week, but tests are quite hard.
Verry Hott and very interesting!
He a very hard professor. Don't take him unless you are getting a degree in art.
He is SO CUTE. I love him to death. Plus, this course is a hybrid class, so you only have class once a week.
Great teacher and always helpful. Hard to take notes in class, but if you pay attention, all the info he covers is on the test. Two essays due, but neither are too hard and one has an opportunity for extra credit. If you have to take Art, take this professor.
Not a difficult class or teacher as long as you are willing to put forth some effort. The hybrid class format was nice - only one class a week. Honestly, I only went to class about five or six times the whole semester. I still managed to get an A. The online explorations are really easy and the papers are not difficult either. Highly recommend!
dr koontz is FANTASTIC. this was my favorite class this semester and I wish that he taught 1381. you have to do 2 papers, if you are a good writer and understand the material you can get away with not much effort. he seems tough at first but is pretty understanding if you're having an issue.
Very organized, best prof. I have had!
Good teacher, easy class, only go once a week. What's not to like? Not hot though. Who put that??? He wears the same blazer the whole semester. Kinda sad. We need to chip in and buy him a new one. Anyways, good/easy class.
Very good teacher. Class is very interesting. Take it. Easy A. Hybrid class, and need to buy a MP3 player, no book.
Awesome! Best prof ever!
How can you find this professor "hot?". He is bald, short, unattractive and wears jeans with suit jackets and carries a foldable bike to class. Anyways, I understand his lectures and learned from them but I did not like the tests since you have only a certain amount of time to answer them while the slides flash on the screen.
He knows his stuff, but he is not a very nice person. When he puts videos on WebCT and it doesn't work and the tech people can't help you, its your problem not his. He acts cold and his friendliness is fake, he doesn't want to help his students in such a large class.
This class was the most boring class I have ever taken; but it was extremely easy.
If not interested in Art DO NOT take his class!! Class 1 time a week and had to drag myself to class. Lot of outside class work, thought class would be easy--i was wrong. Teacher is cool, but class is not. Online test every week/2 papers. 1 really easy, the other,a lot of research to do. More work than expected for freshman level class!!!!!
He is a pretty cool teacher. YOu only go once a week and since it's a hybrid class it's pretty simple. Group up with people to study and DON'T leave the essays for the last minute. Every semester he teaches is basically the same so know someone who's taken the class before you.
If you're taking this class then you better be able to listen and write what he's saying because that's all that's really on the test. The first paper he gave was easy, but the second was freaking hard. He wants you to analyze but he won't explain how very clearly. If you take this class then proceed with caution.
Really easy. I got over a 100 in the class. 9 online quizzes [easy, you get a week to do each], 2 exams [semi-easy], and 2 major papers [start early]. He does offer extra credit, and you get 2 tries on each quiz. The final is not cumulative. He's a very good prof and made class really interesting. I liked art history because of him. :)
The class was fun, he is a funny guy overally so thats always nice. The hybrid class is good but you have to read the book before the test in order to do well. The essays are easy grades. The two "real" exams are easy but he gives alot of notes but you ultimately only focus on a few areas. Studying is essential. Just do your all your assignments.
The lecture was great! Very informative. School is for learning folks...you have to write papers, take tests..that is what it is all about. Too much work for a freshmen class? Get a grip. Upset because you actually had to attend class....good grief!
I loved this professor and his class so much that I'm doing my own independent research on the art we covered. He's enthusiastic and appeals very much to visual learners. What I loved most was that he made us go to MFAH and Menil to see real ancient art! If you want enrichment, this is the class to take and Koontz is the man to teach it.
Dr.Koontz speaks clearly and his lecture is what will be on his test. If you attend class and do your essays you will probably get an A. He's also really friendly and will fix your online test grades if there's a problem. :)
I took his hybrid class, and it was kind of repetitive. What you read in from the book for the online quizzes was basically what he tought the next week in class. He was sort of interesting but personally I zoned in and out a lot. He's fairly forgiving though, giving everyone extra points on the final average and 2 attempts for each open book quiz.
I took the beginning art history class. It's hard to hear him from that auditorium. He isn't clear on the papers. I found him to act arrogant and rude on occasions where I had to ask him questions at the end of class and at his office. I didn't like the way he treats students and his class was EASY!
He's an ok teacher, very passionate about the subject. The class is not hard is just the 2nd essay is hell!..so start it ASAP!!
EASY CLASS, You have to do some work, but it's easy. Go to lectures, because pretty much everything from the Major Exam comes for it. Start early on essay 2... Because it'll kill you if you don't. (Trust me I know... I started it the day before it was due... I stayed up all night and some doing it, but I got an A)
A LOT of reading since it's a hybrid course. Quizzes are not so easy, but not too hard. Tests are both easy, although i did study 15 hours for it in one day. Research paper #1 is easy, Paper #2 is time consuming and hard! You need to find acadamic sources on boring materials. This class requires you to go to the museum twice. very time consuming.
No textbook, but there are very helpful podcasts and websites provided in addition to lectures. Online quizzes are easy (and open book), in class exams are just as easy as the quizzes (same format, but closed book). If you can do your research well, you can do your essays without going to the museum (I never went and I got an A on both). Great clas
class and 2 tests are pretty easy but must take notes, lots of research for the second paper!
I recommend, easy grading, lots of outside work. Only met once a week. Very negotiable and very nice and understanding. Keep up with the slide IDs, that's all you need to know! Just read the paragraphs they are in in the book, study the CD if you have it, the practice quizzes are some test Qs and do the online exercises
i took a hybrid course which linked ARTH1380 to ENGL1304 with Mary Gray. both classes were EXTREMELY EASY because they were both linked to each other. Dr. Koontz knows his stuff and if you take down the notes that he says REPETITIVELY you will basically know whats on the test. oh yeah! MEMORIZE THE SLIDE IDs! you will totally ace the tests!
His passion for his subject is contagious. His sense of humour keeps the class lively and upbeat. You will walk away from this class with a first rate knowledge of Pre-Columbian art and culture and a desire to improve upon that knowledge.I would recommend this professor to anyone interested in art, not just Latin or Pre-Columbian.
Great lectures and powerpoints. Says "um" too much though. Quizzes are hard. Tests are easier. Essay1 is easy. Essay2 is hard and requires lots of time. Although the subject is interesting, he has a way of turning a student off due to grades.
Great lectures and powerpoints. Says "um" too much though. Quizzes are hard. Tests are easier. Essay1 is easy. Essay2 is hard and requires lots of time. Provides a couple extra credit opportunities. Although the subject is extremely interesting, he has a way of turning a student off due to quizzes and grading style.
He's fantastic, especially if you're already interested in art history. He makes you take several trips to one of the museums, but he gives you days off from class to do this. His 1381 and 2000-level class is hybrid, so he gives you off one day every single week (If it's MWF, you only come MW, and if it's TTh, you come T.) Take him!
I took his hybrid class and got an easy A! Go to his class every time because most of the test materials come out from his class. Just listen to him and take notes.. and heck, we only meet once a week!! The essays are not THAT hard, just be sure you go to museum and do some research.... TAKE THIS PROF
Excellent lecturer. He makes his information very interesting and has a good sense of humor. My only complaint is that he can sometimes seem somewhat distant when confronted by students for help. However, it was a very large sized class. I definitely recommend.
One of the best professors out there. Assignments and essays are all related. Requirement to visit museum is an awesome idea. Learned so much in this class. Vivid lectures. He makes use of computing resources very well. Definitely recommend. If you are punctual in all assignments and classes, you should do well in the class.
easy class but i took it on a saturday (not recommended) bc his lectures dragged. if you're not interested in art then don't take this class. 2 easy essays, 2 easy tests and weekly quizzes.
Excellent prof but a little standoffish if you talk to him, although he's still pretty friendly. Very enthusiastic, knowledgeable. His 1380 & 2000-level AAO class are actually hybrid courses, which means you show up only once a week. Interesting lectures too. Take him!
Koontz is an excellent lecturer. He brings the history of the period to life. You have to go to the MFAH for a paper twice, but you can get extra credit for having your paper proofread. Weekly quizzes, and you MUST attend class, or else you won't know anything. You can take a hybrid English class, and you'll make a better grade. TAKE KOONTZ!
Absolutely amazing! I loved his class. The 2 essays are easy if you pick art objects that are interesting and easy to research. Online exams are easy if you do the assigned readings. YOU MUST GO TO EVERY CLASS in order to pass the 2 in class exams. He highly encourages use of the web ct discussion boards, so you'll get all the help you'll need!
KOONTZ IS A THUG!!! NAH hes great loved trhe class hes funny the online quizzes are easy use webct take the linked english course 2 essays. I got a 99.79 average GREAT CLASS!! TAKE IT seriously.GREAT PROFESSOR
I adored this class. Even when the subject matter was not the most interesting, he made it so. He is very nice, very inviting, and crystal clear. If you work hard, go to class, and try your best...you will do great. 4/6 of the tests are online and you get TWO chances to take them!
Hes awesome! this was a hybrid class and it was worth my while. Koontz is an awesome teacher, directions for assignments are clear, his lecutres are clear, and his expectations from his students and this class was clear. Take him regardless if you are an art history major or not. Best art history teacher Ive had thus far!
Pros: Only has class once a week, offers extra credit. Cons: Online quizzes are VERY hard. Tip: Take the online quizzes with a group from your class, this is extremely helpful. For the 2nd exam I cut my textbook up and made flashcards and that was incredibly helpful. Not too hard of a class but there are prob easier fine arts credits.
he is very good. Very helpful and understanding of students. If you have any difficulty he will help u out. Extra credits available. Highly recommended.
On the first day of class I just knew the class was going to be boring but it actually turned out to be really interesting. If you're not the type that likes are you will probably still be interested because he talks about very interesting works of art. The only thing I didn't like was the fact that the tests were timed. Great class!
Yes this class meets once a week BUT if you want the A you HAVE to stay on top of your work.Online Exams are 30% of your grade & are VERY DIFFICULT you have two papers in this class(not bad) and two in class exams which are based on his lectures take descriptive notes and you should be fine. I came out with an A+
Dr. Koontz is awesome take him, for ARTH 1&2 real easy A. 2 essays 1 short on long. 2 exams 4 online quizzes. HYBRID COURSE ONCE A WEEK!! Tuesdays great class he's funny you'll enjoy it i really neve like Art but now im considering a minor in it!! great class im a Political Sciene Major Junior year. PLEASE EM!! EASY!!!
Dr. Koontz is awesome take him, for ARTH 1&2 real easy A. 2 essays 1 short on long. 2 exams 4 online quizzes. HYBRID COURSE ONCE A WEEK!! Tuesdays great class he's funny you'll enjoy it i really never liked Art but now im considering a minor in it!! great class im a Political Sciene Major Junior year. PLEASE TAKE HIM!! EASY!!!
This class was really hard because we had like tests back to back, just about every week, but the tests were actually not that hard. I would recommend this professor because he is fair, gives extra credit, and he actually teaches. I never thought i would learn soo much from this class. If you do your readings, you'll get an A. He is nice too.
I took his saturday class and it was very easy, you dont have to go to class, as long as you used the book and myartkit you are going to make an A, in fact i made a 100 in this class, and the essays are not that hard at all. I put medium effort into them and still made A's on them. Class is very interesting. Would Recommend his hybrid classes.
He is an amazing teacher! The quizzes help you prepare for his tests. His essays are not that hard. My class was a hybrid class, so we only met once a week but he covers alot. So you don't want to miss class. He makes art history interesting. You also get to go to the museum for free with his essay assignments. I really do recommend him. Easy A.
Freakin HATED going to this class. somehow i got a B but i alwayyyyyyyyyysssssssss felled asleep in this class. 2 essays 2 major test and 9 online quizzes that you will learn to hate throught the semester. if you can take another subject, if not then i guess he is good, if art history is your thing...if not...take something at hcc
This is the most interesting course I have ever attended. As a matter of fact, I declared this as my minor because of this excellent professor. I cannot thank him enough for all his teaching and inspiration because now that I'm a teacher I have been able to connect everything he instructed me in some way to my class. THANK YOU
Took severalcourses w/Dr.Ktz back in 98-01 & would have freakin hated myself for missing out on the knowledge, passion & enthusiasm thatshares. Loved the way he delivered & described any particular item. Right mix research, material taught & evaluation towards class. Gives u tools for individual, indepdent study essential for future.visualcult=fav
i really enjoyed dr. koontz class. 4 online quizzes based on readings and museum visits and a 10 page paper, 2 major exams. Emphasizes what you need to know for exams. take notes in lecture and do readings and you will do fine. take him! :)
The online exams are easy, but don't be fooled about the inclass exams. They are HARD and you have lots of material to study, but it seems like he focuses on two or three week. So, don't miss class or day dream!
Dr. Koontz is extremely pasionate about Latin American art he provides a wonderful insight to the stories behind the neglect of Latin American art and new ideas which are still developing in Latin America. I highly recommend this course and Any with him my 3rd. no test only 4 online quizzes which are timed & 2 attempts 1 Research paper
I really wish I could take his class again, too bad I just graduated. His class and knowledge really reached out to me as an anthropologist and we found much to talk about after his lectures. Wonderful professor. He can point out an anthroplogy student anywhere.
Mr.Koontz is a GREAT teacher! I'm so glad I took his class. I have learned so much! He explains his material well. He also has a cool sense of humor! I would highly recommend for people needing to take Art history class to take him! He's AWESOME! =)
Terrible professor! Hardly available for help. He has you submit any questions on webct and he answers a week later or not at all! Also, he tells you that certain things will be on the exam but they don't show up and things that he says are not going to be on there are actually there. The material is not difficult and is actually interesting.
okay professor. you kind of have to study, especially since most of the questions given are usually random or not even talked about in class. there are online exams which you have 2 tries to take but you don't get to see what you did wrong (which i think is stupid). overall you can get an easy A if you just do the work and do the extra credit :)
Take him, this man is awesome and you will learn a lot !!! No books required just need to visit the museum a few times. Test are online and you have more then one try. Over all I loved this class !!
I used to hate art history but he is awesome, he makes it really interesting. He gave us 6 online exam that are open book, and 2 major exams, 2 essays and no final. Major exams are extremely easy. He also gives partial credits. I made an easy A in class. I extremely recommend him. He is really good.
Koontz is very into what he teaches and it shows! He really is a fun teacher who knows what he is talking about. In this class you are very independent which i really liked. There were 2 major exams 2 relatively short essays and i believe 6 online exams. Pay attention to the online exams and read all the online materials and museum book(its needed)
tests are very easy. just have to understand his test layout. mainly over art pieces he often says certain things will be on there but they're not. study the image he discusses in class and the image from the mets website he gives you. midterm and finals are mainly over the art pieces he goes over in class. attending class isnt crucial but importan
Easy professor, exams were easy, never studied and many opportunities for extra credit. You don't really have to go to class but sometimes his lectures are interesting.
The best art history professor I've had and also the most helpful! His love of art and his enthusiasm on the subject is infectious. Very congenial when approached for guidance and advice, and always willing to help a student discover the answers. Term paper is tough, but Dr. Koontz is readily available for advice and guidance.
Koontz is the best. He is so knowledgeable and passionate. I wish he taught more classes. Best ARTH professor at UH.
Best professor at UH. I had no interest in this subject, but his enthusiasm is infectious. In the end, I had as much interest in the subject as he did. Very entertaining and knowledgeable professor. TAKE HIM!
I really enjoyed the class and Dr Koontz. He's entertaining and very knowledgeable on Pre-Columbian Art. Keep up with your readings and you will do fine in his class.
Dr. Koontz is one of the best profs I have ever had! He is super passionate about the subject and his lectures are really interesting. Don't be afraid to ask questions! The final paper seems intimidating at first but you spend the semester working on it in sections so its actually pretty easy. Stay on top of the course schedule and you'l do fine
1 long paper on any art or design from Latin America of your choosing that you work on all semester. If you turn in the sections when it's due, it's super easy. Tests every week over readings. Really awesome lectures about a subject not many people know much about. He's really passionate and knowledgeable as Latin American art is his focus.
Why does he have good reviews? He was absent the whole semester. I have a good grade thanks to the TAs.
The class was alright, lots of reading from a boring book. There's 2 papers, 2 "midterms", and a bunch of weekly quizzes. Everything is open book but gives you such a short time to finish that you might as well just read the book bc there's not much time to flip through pages. He doesn't talk much, most of the communication is through the TA.
The class was pretty easy if you are interested in Art History. If not I can see why it wouldn't be so fun. Overall he graded based on weekly quizzes, essays, and tests. The quizzes were open book, but you need to read the chapters or at least skim them. The essays were easy and had good explanations. Tests were half multiple-choice half essay.
I really enjoyed his class but I didn't interact with him only the wonderful TA I had. This class is lecture/quiz heavy and if you do not read the textbook, you will not pass. COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR TA, ESPECIALLY FOR ESSAYS! Watch the videos uploaded, read, and you are guaranteed an A. Lots of extra credit available also.
This professor assigns a lot of homework and essays every week. He was mostly absent the semester and was paid to reuse his instructions and lectures from last year.
Throughout the semester, all we did was read a chapter from our textbook every week and take a test on it and all other chapters covered already with 3 tries on the test and write two essays, 1 was about 400 words and 7.5% of our grade and the other was about 700 worth 27.5%. Overall, not that hard but not easy either, need to put in time & effort.
I failed this class. Weekly exams timed with 3 attempts taking the highest grade of the 3 and open notes/book, 2 Essays, and 2 Major Exam plus Essay. I would not repeat this class. The weekly exams are cumulative of what you learned from prior weeks. Just plain hard. Do not take.
I've had Koontz for a few other classes before and every time I have him, I am not disappointed. He's fun but definitely makes you work for your grade, which can be intimidating at first. BUT he sets clear expectations and a schedule that breaks things down for you. Just keep up with readings and weekly quizzes and you'll be fine.
This was an asynchronous course, all essays were graded by his TA's and you never spoke with the professor. However he was very well organized, had all the assignments laid out based on the week and would send an email if you were getting close to the due date and havent turned it in as a reminder. Don't take if you're bad with asynchronous courses
Prof. Koontz is probably one of the best teachers I've ever had. He definitely makes you work for your grade. BUT his passion and enthusiasm is refreshing and contagious. He gives you a set schedule and breaks down your papers into sections to help you along the way. All you have to do is show up and follow the schedule/assignments and youll pass.
Professor Koontz is great, and cares a lot about his students. There is a major paper due, but it is divided and you work on it throughout the semester. I was stressed about it at first, but Professor Koontz made it doable, reasonable, and fun.
Took Professor Koontz for ARTS1303 this fall semester. Course is hybrid, suggest attending all classes. He gives 4 major exam essays based on the lecture+quizzes every week. Didn't like the fact he made us answer 30 questions under 5 mins. Koontz is overall a flexible, entertaining and serious professor. His TA's were amazing and really helpful!
The class was fairly easy as long as you read the textbook and memorize the time periods of artworks. There are 2 major exams, weekly quizzes, and 2 major essays that require museum visits. He does give extra credit often and there's random pop quizzes even if attendance isn't mandatory.
One of my all time favorite graduate professors. He's incredibly inspiring and easy to talk to. I would recommend him to undergraduate and graduate students alike.
You rarely get the chance to communicate with him. I on multiple occasions tried to, but the whole class is basically ran by TA's, who are nice, but prof will shut you down for extra help. Ive dropped this class twice just because of how much harder that made it. Everything else is fine, except his lack of personal help.
lectures were interesting goes over most of the material in class, but if you read the weekly chapters and watch the videos then you will not struggle on weekly exams (more like quizzes) and you get three attempts and a thurs-Sun period to complete.1 research essay and two exam essays, but they're not super long and simple to answer
This class was horrible. Although his weekly tests are open notes, don't be fooled. He will assign 60 questions in 25 mins. It would be fine if it was easy questions, but the questions aren't in the textbook, lecture, or online. His class will make you want to do horrible things (If ykyk). unless you want poor mental health, don't take this class.
I took ARTH 1303. The assignments he gave were not hard at all, weekly quizzes, about 3-4 exams with the mid-term and final included and 1 essay which is not hard to do. He really goes based off of his syllabus. I would say attendance is mandatory just because you never know when he will take attendance.
He had online quizzes every week and a major project that recurred throughout the course. Pretty easy class.
AMAZING PROFESSOR!! Like no joke he actual teaches in a good understandable way. I actually learned alot about art history in this class. Btw weekly exams each week, open notes!. There are 2 major exams, along with 2 essays. It may seem like a lot but its not!. Overall easy class, take it. Lots of extra credit, bumped me to a A. His exams are timed
Kept coursework very straightforward, if you go to class and pay attention quizzes/tests are easy (and there's multiple attempts). Only issue is everything is TA graded, and they can be hit or miss as far as feedback goes, but I never received a bad grade. I loved his lectures and found the class interesting!
Professor Koontz's class has weekly online quizzes and a project that runs throughout. While the quick exams can be challenging, the assignments are manageable. unstuck AI was a great study tool alongside the textbook.
Honestly, I loved prof. Koontz. The first few days of class made me feel really nervous about this class. However, as the course progressed, I realized that he really does all that for a reason, and is actually very helpful, lenient, and forgiving. The essay is spread out and not difficult. Do the readings and show up, you'll do great!
The most amazing professor at UH. If you attend class you will pass no problem, he gives extra credit and allows notes on exams !!!!
This class is fairly simple but you MUST attend class. Important information about quizzes and the heavily weighted essays are only given out in class. There are a few extra credit assignments and there is an assignment that requires going to the museum. There are no phones allowed in class and all exams are in-person. The TA grades all essays.
