Subject is easy, but beating the curve is tough (everyone knows the material).
Easy class, curve kills you. He sure loves marketing.
He is a very cold person. I have never encountered such a professor in my life like Rex.
Rex is really not a friendly person. He also tries to make his class hard...but it's all a bunch of shibai.
his class is challenging but he does a great job of clearly explaining everything and he does whatever he can to keep his students entertained. his tests are hard though. make sure you go over the study guide!!
Such a horrible class. I also dislike Rex's grading policy for the video presentation. He should quit his job because he plays favoritism with certain students.
I didn't like the way he left all the grading to the TA. Because of my experience with Rex, I dislike Marshall B-school.
This was a horrible class. It was unecesarily hard and he is so boring. I couldn't stand being in the class. No matter what you do, if you don't memorize all of his thousands of slides and the entire book, you can't get an A.His tests have a review sheet that defined is 23 pages long. Just a warning
Easy Class just study your handouts and show up to the quizzes
Very nice teacher, but leaves the grading to the TAs. Tests are hard.
Tough to get a good grade b/c of mega section. Nice guy but could have done better
Other than the retarded Marshall curve (which kills you because this class is easy), I had nothing against Rex. The final project was a joke too.
Tests are very hard. Project is easy as long as you get a good group. Lectures are okay the first hour but then they get boring. Have any teachers here heard of a break for long classes?
He's a very cold person. always plays favorism with certain people. He dislikes foreign students. renowable **** among international students. not friendly at all.
He really has a favoritism. He is always knid only to girls. Discussion is aimless. He doesn't want male sudents to come to his office hour. His job seems so easy. What he does is just giving us hard test. He talks about his family which we never care!!
I enjoyed his class, and never felt discriminated against for being male as some of you have suggested. Ranked in the Top 5, even though I wasn't a business major. My secret was participation...I would come with good comments and questions during his Friday meetings.
Rex was an awesome professor. Sure he's not easy but he definitely knows his stuff and appreciates it when class participation reflects we know our stuff as well. He tries to explain everything clearly and when he didn't, he sent out an informative email to us before finals to clarify some confusing topics. Take him!!
Rex is an awesome professor. I first had him as the leader of my Taipei business trip and now as my marketing professor. He is a competent and knowledgeable businessmen and he is an excellent speaker. Kept me interested in lecture even when I thought the topic was dry. Also, he did not require us to write a 10-page paper which the other class did.
Great guy, very enthusiastic. Willing to help you out with anything. I never really went to lecture but wish I had more. Go to every discussion he gives participation points out. You pretty just go over pp slides all class. One of those classes that's a breeze to get a B in but really have to work to get an A.
perner is easy but not helpful, kalb is a bad choice, but kovacevitch is a great professor. he incorporates humor into his lectures, the midterms aren't that bad as long as you put effort into it. you don't really need the book at all. great guy.
amazing teacher, great person. class was very entertaining. kind of a difficult grader, but overall a great class.
if you are a male international student, forget it. the best u can do is a B. he seems nice at first, but eventually u realize that he is super biased. if u don't have skills to be his pet, u'll get a B or lower no matter how hard u try. it's in ur best interest to take another professor.
He is not an "easy" grader, but he is amazing! So nice and he genuinely wants to help his students.
Great teacher and great guy. Not the "easiest" of the marketing teachers, but if you attend lecture and discussion you'll do fine. I'm not into marketing, but the materials and videos he teaches with make it interesting. Highly recommend!
Great professor, he tries to make the class as interesting as possible, grades based on: attendance (to discussion sections), midterm, project and final. He is the best marketing professor
Kovacevitch is the BEST 307 teacher. I heard he was good but hard prior to taking him. After taking him, I'll say he's is just as good as advertised, but not nearly as hard as they say. Just read the chapters, make a study guide, and work hard on the marketing project and you'll get an A. Also, he doesn't assign a long paper like the other profs
Rex is a good teacher. Definitely interesting. Has good stories to tell. Very straightforward. Grade is based on participation in discussion, midterm, final, group project. Group project sucks because it is mostly graded by your peers and if you get the lowest score, it can kill your grade. Nevertheless, it's a good class!
Plzzzz, the Professor is so average. The book does all the teaching b/c it's straightforward. There is nothing special about this guy. He's lazy. His grading is whack especially since he lets the students grade each other; Marshall should not allow him to do this. I wish I took someone else, ugh.
Great professor and great teacher but the group project is horribly constructed. If you care at all about your GPA, don't take Rex.
All around average. Theres not a lot of points in the class and his tests are hard.
He is a nice guy and I liked the group mrk project. Study guide is useful.
Amazing professor. Content of the class is really easy and he presents it in a way that you don't ever really have to read the book. He gives you a comprehensive study guide before the midterm which as long as you go through, you should get a good grade. The group project is a lot of fun too.
His grading system SUCKS. I'm a 4.0 student & I regret taking his class bc I worked way too hard to only get an A-. His tests r difficult & his study guides r not always helpful. It's a shame bc as a teacher he's respectable and I enjoyed his lectures, but u get screwed over on the group project because ur peers essentially control 40% of outcome.
Rex is an old school kinda guy, I would say one of the better marketing professors for 307. He teaches mostly Grad school. I enjoyed the class, learned a lot, but disliked the multiple choice style of learning. Easy to get a decent grade. Very lecutre-book based. However, I will admit I entered without much interest in marketing and left fascinated
Learned a lot from this course. However, horrible grade system that ended up screwing up my GPA. Seems really nice inside lecture when he jokes around, but outside the classroom he's not very understanding on circumstances. Was impressed in the beginning but now in the end was extremely disappointed.
Rex is a cool guy with a bunch of great stories and pretty clear lectures. Use the study guide and you should know everything on the exam. Word of wisdom: DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE TEAM PROJECT. It is a lot of work if you plan on pulling off anything that's good quality. He's an understanding professor and a cool guy so just do the work for an A.
Great prof! I forgot it was a 2 hr. lecture at night, he's a great teacher and introduces material in engaging ways. Put in the work and you should do fine. He is straight-forward and his tests really test whether you understand the material- applying it to marketing situations, etc. So it was definitely helpful & I learned a lot.
Take this guy. Father figure. Knows what he's talking about. Last class what where he told stories and said he was glad to be a part of our "educational journey". Always incorporates jokes in lecture to keep it light. Take this guy seriously
Rex is a great prof. He's got a lot business experience, has a good sense of humor to keep lectures interesting, and you get the sense that he really does care about his students. I would highly recommend him if you are taking 307. As far as grades go it's what you're used to with Marshall: easy to get a B, hard to get an A. No busywork.
Class is pretty boring. Usually didn't take attendance but participation points count towards your grade. His lectures make sense but won't help you pass the relatively difficult midtermfinal. Study with the textbook and his lectures and you should be fine. Hard to get a high grade because of curveamount of students in class.
Zero correlation between his study guides and the actual exams. Exams are too hard for a marketing class.
Rex is the best kind of professor - cared about his students and about the material. Made clear his expectations, fair grading style (about 70% exams, 30% proj and part). Exam questions constructed such that those with only topical knowledge would miss a good amount, which is good because it allowed students to distinguish themselves
Epitome of a good professor. Very easygoing and very understanding.
Rex is a nice guy - genuinely interested in his students. However, there's a preference to people in greek life. My team had struggled a lot during the marketing simulation (which is HORRIBLE) - and he barely helped. Also, he gave me NEGATIVE participation grades in things I had clearly been or done at least 75% of. All in all, disappointed
easy A, take notes and ask questions you will be fine
If you memorize everything - you'll get an A. Lectures are pointless.
He tries to make his lectures funny. One of the best professors I've had in SC. If you read the textbook and go to lectures you will easily get an A. Group project might screw you over though depending on who your teammates are. Definitely recommended. Uses Arkaive check-in randomly.
Incredible professor in Marshall which is rare. Very easygoing, class makes sense, and you know what is expected of you. Midterm, final, and group project. Other than that go to lecture, study the slides and you'll get an A in the class. Tests are relatively easy if you read the book and memorize the lecture slides.
Overall an average class and average professor. Personality-wise, he's a nice man, but teaching-wise, meh. Unclear expectations for participation, yet a huge portion of the grade. Group project also can affect how you do in the class. Ended up with a B despite doing well on exams, so if you prefer test-based classes, don't go with Kovacevich.
Rex is a really kind professor. His teaching is a little bit boring but you can always is easy to approach and he would try his best to solve your problem. Not only the marketing content would be taught but also other true meaning of life would be told during his last class. Very helpful on your focus and inspirational for your whole life!
I was not particularly interested in marketing but I think the class is fine for most people. His lectures can be kind of boring but he tries his best to make it more interesting. Attendance is not mandatory but he occasionally takes attendance quizzes.
Really nice and caring professor. Extremely knowledgable. Father figure. Tests are pretty average--read the book/go to the lectures and take good notes and you'll do fine. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he gives out random attendance quizzes. *Important group project at the end of the year*. Overall, pretty good class/typical for Marshall.
Incredible professor who brings in real life experiences into his life. Get to know him and he will make your life super easy.
Pretty good class overall, it's basically common sense with vocabulary. Show up to lecture, skim the readings, and memorize all the terms and you'll be fine. However, group project is pretty crucial in determining your grade. Professor is accessible, knowledgable, and decent at making a boring subject interesting.
The professor is extremely kind and friendly. He cares so much about his students. The class itself is very easy but I did not feel like I learned much from it. It is an easy A but it will not challenge you at all. For the exams, which are the bulk of your grade, do the study guide thoroughly and you will get good grades.
Overall, a very good professor. Even though I'm not interested in marketing, Kovacevich definitely taught me useful knowledge that can be applicable to my future. The final, midterm, and group project is work 28.6% each. The remainder of your grade is participation. Midterm (MC & short essay) and Final (MC) were tougher than most would expect.
Man is the GOAT
ok choice for marketing but wouldn't say it's an easy A due to the mt and the final which were both a lot harder than anyone expected. Attendance isn't mandatory but he checks for it randomly. The group project is a significant portion of your grade so try to do well on that. Use the book to study for the exams! exam q's apply theory to real life
definition of average professor. rambles on about his life and family and barely references topics in the textbook, which is what makes up 99% of the midterm and final q's. he randomly checks for attendance, is fairly nice, but there's probably better teachers out there if you're actually looking to learn/be inspired
This professor is absolutely incredible! My favorite at USC by far. He makes his lectures fun and relatable, talks about his family and remembers mostly every student. His tests are tricky but not too difficult. The group project is graded relatively easily. This is an awesome class, 10/10 recommend!
This teacher is extremely passionate about what he does! He loves teaching so much you can tell!! But I have to be honest the lectures were fun and interesting but didnt help much with the tests. The tests were straight out of the textbook. Just make sure to read and reread!
Nice Professor. Boring lectures. Be prepared to study by yourself. DO NOT STUDY JUST THE SLIDES. Group project where you market a new product. Grades are based off tests. All Qs are situational and require a-lot then knowing the definition. Study Guide is basically learning objectives from book. Hardest class I've taken at Marshall. He's nice doe.
My absolute favorite professor in Marshall. Rex is such a gemI've rarely met a teacher so caring, and he works incredibly hard to make his lectures interesting and applicable. I'd recommend this professor a hundred times over. The class isn't hard at all, as long as you show up and do the work. Attending lectures definitely helps on the exam.
Rex taught the class really well. He clearly cares for his students and gave fantastic concrete examples for every topic he taught. Attend lecture and put in a reasonable amount of work and you will do well.
There is a group project he assigns that is difficult to navigate if you don't have an original business idea ready. His lectures are somewhat fun; however, his lecture material doesn't cover most of what is on the midterm and final. Would recommend reading the book and trying to ask what topics to study before exams.
Rex is such a gem. Very knowledgable and he really does a good job at making marketing interesting! The group project was not nearly as bad as I thought and all you need to study for his tests are the textbook objective summaries at the end of each chapter. Very good guy and a very caring professor.
Rex is a nice guy and all, but his lectures are pretty boring (I've fallen asleep on more than one occasion). If you keep up with the readings, pay attention during lectures, and do well on the group project you'll probably do fine. I'd still take him if you have the choice cause the other marketing profs don't seem much better.
One of the best professors at SC. I'm surprised Rex doesn't have a higher rating. He is engaging, friendly, and knowledgeable. Outstanding at explaining concepts and providing concrete examples. The material covered in the course is fascinating. You're golden if you go to class, read the textbook, take notes on slides/readings, and study for exams.
Rex is a super nice guy that really tries to engage with students in discussion and tap into his personal experiences during his lectures. However, his lectures can be somewhat boring and drag on, but it is only once a week and I've definitely had worse. Compared to what I have heard about the other professors, he is definitely the best choice.
Prof. Kovacevich is a great individual, as he is always enthusiastic and interested in both his content and his students. However, his lectures and slides aren't the best, which makes it really hard to grasp the concepts and material well. Tbh though, you just gotta read the textbook and memorize the terms and concepts to do well.
I think that of the 307 professors, Rex is a solid choice. He has been teaching for a long time and is well respected. His lectures often drag on, but the class material is almost all common sense + a couple of models. The grading system is extremely unclear so I really could not get a sense of what my grade would ACTUALLY be until the end. Not bad
Very solid professor and nice guy. Does inject personal anecdotes into lecture pretty often. How to succeed on exams: have the "eligible topics" he gives you open. Rewrite everything relevant to those from the slides, then fill in the rest from the textbook. Attendance occasionally taken - come to class even if you don't pay attention.
I thought marketing would be fun and creative, but nope. Also, this professor can not lecture for the sake of his life. He always just talks about random anecdotal things or his personal life. Also his presentation slides are just visuals, so when you try to go back and study, you can't... This was class was hard, and the prof ain't helping it.
Rex is a nice guy. Lectures aren't mandatory, but make sure you go to the discussion sections. Tests were primarily based on textbook material from the eligible topics list but the information overlaps with lectures. On the final, he gave us way too much textbook material to have to study which did make it difficult to know what was gonna be on it.
not an easy A cause the final is hard, but very possible. Real nice guy.
professor is very kind and friendly however lectures can be boring. you will do a fun project and instead of homework, there is online marketing research which is very cool. the tests are honestly difficult and there is a lot of material in every unit so prepare for those.
Take Rex! He's very lenient and understanding when it comes to the assignments and pulls in a lot of examples to help you remember concepts. I would recommend going to class because a lot of his slides are just pictures so you have to go to class to actually hear his explanations. I would recommend in comparison to some of the other profs.
Prof. Rex is an amazing professor! The class is very informative and more of an experience you must have! I personally found scoring in this class difficult but the class was amazing so no hard feelings!
An average professor who seems out of touch with aspects of current marketing but really nice guy overall. Only two exams, but make sure to study the textbook because that is where all of the info comes from. One group project makes up a good chunk of the grade as well. Lectures can be boring, and go above and beyond for the project for an A on it.
Rex was a good professor but he often just rambles about his own experience and lectures were often really boring to listen to. The textbook is the holy grail for the class because you don't need to show up to lectures to do that well. 2 exams that were fairly straightforward and ended up being more of a vocab test from high school.
This class requires you to read the textbook forever. I spend at least four hours after class every week reading and summarizing key points by myself to get an A. Yet as long as you work hard, you can do well in tests. Professor Rex also gave a very kind curve. Hard-working students can take this class.
made marketing interesting. totally a managable class I took it first semester of my freshman year. he makes study guides with terms using chapter lessons from the textbook and from his lectures. DO THAT. fill that out like 3 weeks before the exam. It was a great class
Incredible Professor. Lots of us had him for both BUAD 307 and a higher-division marketing class, and he's awesome. Gives great feedback and is great at teaching the hardest of concepts.
One of the best marketing professors. He is very funny so it makes the lectures livable and memorable. Take notes because that's exactly what he tests you on. The two-part group project was very informative and just make sure your group is participating. He grades well on the exams. Take this class if you need an MKT course.
Amazing & inspiring lectures! This class was my favorite class at Marshall. He is so nice & has a great sense of humor and his lectures are very interesting and practical. All the assignments + exams are very doable.
Love Rex! Amazing lecturer who genuinely cares for students and material he teaches. Never much homework, but I recommend attending lectures because that's most if not all the material you are tested on, and he's a funny prof. If you have the chance to take him I would.
Lectures and discussion sections aren't technically mandatory, but he did take attendance a few times over the semester. The midterm and final exams make up most of the grade. Pretty easy course, but it is just graded by a few things.
Awesome professor! Great lecturer, funny and kind. 1 lengthy but doable mcq midterm+mcq final, barely any HW and some group work in discussions. Takes attendance randomly in lectures and discussion. Gives study guide before exams. Material was pretty interesting to learn too! 90% of exam material are from lectures/slides, 10% from the textbook.
Rex is an amazing professor. The material is a little dense, but it is expected to be used in an introductory course. He does a great job engaging with the material and keeping the class interactive and enjoyable. If you attend class, do the coursework on time, and put in some effort, the class is a breeze. Highly recommend.
Straightforward with what is expected of students, excellent and funny lecturer, he likes to include relevant examples which is insightful. the lectures though are LONG and sometimes feel monotone. group project is not difficult, the exams are pretty straightforward with what you need to study. super chill and nice too, i highly recommend rex!
The nicest and funniest guy!!! He is so passionate about the subject material that it makes a rudimentary class interesting. He cares so much about all of his students. You should definitely go to lectures and discussion sections and read the textbook because reading the slides won't help you prepare for the exam. Highly recommend him for 307.
this class was so boring, i slept through every lecture. just studied hard for the exams and got an A. his study guides are VERY helpful-- the slides not so much. i liked rex a lot as a person though! very sweet and funny. take him if you want a chill class with a few hours of studying before the two exams! sometimes does surprise attendance checks
Sweetest man ever. He's kinda like a dad. The class is kinda like 304- lecture heavy, easy exams (no cheatsheet tho), discussion participation mandatory. Please laugh at his jokes, he truly wants to engage his class and everyone around me had a soft spot for him. Solid 307 choice, and super accessible! He has background in finance and marketing!
honestly, the lectures were very dry and boring, but that is not on him. that's just marketing, which is just stating the obvious and pretty much self-explanatory. But Rex is a very nice, sweet guy that genuinely cares for you. He is very accessible so reach out and get advice from him. Overall not a bad class, but definitely not the best one.
Rex is kind and passionate, but the course needs improvement. Lectures felt outdated and lacked real-world relevance. Adding interactive elements like activities, guest speakers, and case studies could enhance engagement. The material often felt overly theoretical; more focus on modern, practical marketing applications would be valuable.
not the best. lectures are not recorded and presentation slides are useless- mostly pictures and no words- so if you miss a class you cant really make up. especially annoying bc exams are 80% based on lectures and 20% on textbook. Nice guy but avoid if theres a better option/ if you know you will miss class.
Don't listen to other ratings. Goated prof. No homework except a late-semester simulation, and the group project was a short paper instead of pointless presentations. I studied the night before for exams (all MCQs), skipped lectures, barely participated but got perfect score in participation by going to office hours, and scored 90+ on exams.
The sweetest and kindest professor I've had. He cares and wants to connect with every student. People are just lazy and expect to get an A without going to class. The lectures are actually interesting if you pay attention and care about your learning. If you go to class, pay attention, try, take notes, and participate a little, it'll be easy.
Took this class for Marketing Fundamentals. Kovacevich talks almost the entire lecture, all the time, with some random attendance quizzes in both discussion and lecture. His lectures can be kind of boring and long but exams are a big part of your grade. Content was very easily organized and is a very nice and kind man. Would take him again.
Make sure you go to the lectures since they are NOT posted online and the slides are really non-descriptive. Rex himself is really caring and goes into the material a lot during the lectures but is sometimes boring (I fell asleep multiple times). If you pay attention to everything he says and READ THE TEXTBOOK you will ace the exams.
Professor Rex is a funny, engaging lecturer who makes the material interesting. Lectures are long but worth attending, and exams are manageable with the study guides. unstuck ai was a helpful tool for exam prep.
The class is boring but thats just marketing. This guy is extremely nice and caring but has a tendency to get off track at times. Ur graded on 2 exams, 1 group project, participation, a marketing simulation, and a marketing certificate. None of it is that tough. Would recommend
His lecture style is not as effective for all learners. I only showed up for the discussions and found that much more helpful than sitting through the 2 hour lectures. The slides were long and unengaging. I also went into the midterm with knowledge of the material he taught, and still found myself with a bad score. Overall, minimal help
Good professor, but lectures can get pretty boring. Make sure to read the textbook before the exams. His slides aren't great as they're mostly pictures, so be sure to attend lecture and discussion.
Super sweet professor, but lectures can be a little long sometimes. Go to class because the slides are mostly images. The most important thing - exams are not as common-sense-based as you think. Exams are multiple choice, but definitely study.
Funny guy that makes great dad jokes, + he always lets out class 10-15 min early. Lecture can be boring but tbh that's just marketing in general. Def study before exams tho because it's not as common sense as you think; you really need to know vocab terms inside and out.
TAKE BUAD307 WITH REX!!! Genuinely my favorite professor. He cares so much about his students, and it is evident. The midterm/final is not difficult if you attend class and discussion times and take notes. You'll have a group marketing project (not bad, 4ish pages split between you and about 4 other group members). The best and sweetest ever!
The class is basically 90% lecture and can get boring as everyone says but seriously PAY ATTENTION to lecture, especially on the slides that have just pictures. I suggest copying down what's on the slides prior to lecture and utilizing lecture to add in what he talks about and then for studying to use those notes plus add from the textbook. Doable.
The class is curved in such a way so that it's really easy to get a B/B+, but hard to move up to an A-/A. Rex is a nice person and you can tell he genuinely cares about what he's teaching, but a lot of the times in lectures he's just rambling about things not covered on tests.
Professor was alright. His grading system was very confusing. I didn't understand how it was pretty much impossible to get a 100% in certain areas of my grade. The tests were pretty easy but included a lot of concepts that weren't on the list of concepts you should know.
