Absolutely wonderful. She will help you with your direction if you're confused, encourages students to e-mail her if having problems, responds quickly. If you're looking for an easy A, then forget it; but, if you work hard, she will reward you for your efforts. Big +: lets you choose what you want to write about. Can't ask for more than that.

I heard the rumor about her grading men better than women but it's not true. I got -A. She does take a lot of time and effort to help the students who have questions and she makes sure you have all the tools to get good grades on her papers. I would take her again. Assigns a lot of reading, but you won't regret any of it. One midterm, one final, one research paper. She gives you lots of freedom in choosing what you want to write about for the tests and paper. Goes out of her way to help her students. Answers your e-mails right away and doesn't brush you off at all. Shows movies that are relevant.

Great class - really interesting. You must do the reading and listen well. Lotsa movie excerts and readings. Would definately take her again.

She goes thru every detail of the reading material. She is helpful and quite brilliant. I have taken her twice and both times the classes were very interesting. If you have the opportunity to take her, do so...she is GREAT!!

She may or may not like you for reasons unknown, so roll the dice if you want. If you can stomach going to school on Sat mornings, then go with Carillo for 005W. He is a far superior teacher, not to mention more interesting as a person. One idea would be to go to her class first, if she doesn't like you (which you'll know quickly), then switch.

I didn't notice her playing favorites or grading based on whether she likes your or not. She is very easy going. We just had to write one 5 page paper for the whole semester and weekly writing assignment, which are about 2 paragraphs. I'd recommend her.

Just trust me... do not take this professor! Great material but professor has a nasty attitude if you ask her something, especially if you're not of her "favorites." She has a few favorite students in her classes.

Great Professor. I was really dreading this class and it turned out to be one of my favorites. She makes learning interesting and respects your opinion. Always available and helpful. Test are fine is you read the material. If you don't read, you will be lost.

Great teacher. But grading seemed inconsistent. It seems she grades on how she feels. Overall a GREAT teacher!! I definitely came out with an appreciation for the great work of literature.

I read so many ratings. Pros and Cons are both correct. Bottom line she is a very professional professor. She gives you room to develop. Sometimes she may not say things to please you. But we got to behave as an adult. We are students and ought to do our jobs. If you are only focus on learning, you will not be disappointed.

She tends to favor the bohemian/free-spirited/quirky types of people, I think that might be what she imagines herself to be. I don't know her story but I sense a lot of bitterness under the surface which comes out at some students for reasons unknown. Other than that she does know her stuff.

Dr Sirlin is a great professor. She's interesting, witty, open-minded, and fair. her class Midterms and Finals are usually essays but if you do the reading, take good notes you'll do great. I've taken 4 classes with her and got B+, A-, A+, and this semester I'm not sure yet but I got two A-'s on my midterm so it's looking like an A- overall.

She is great. Funny. Keeps your attention. The time flew in this class. Her choices in literature for assignments were spot on. Stickler for grammar and punctuation.

She's truly a great professor! I took a three hour class with her, and it was by far my favorite class yet. She is incredibly funny, and keeps the class lively with entertaining stories. The work load is fair, and she's always willing to discuss/help with papers. Fair grader, who pushes you to become a better writer. Definitely recommend!

She was excellent. Knows the material inside out and very funny . She expects you to work and too often younger students are too lazy . they need to pay attention because she is one of the best teachers at Queens College .

really good professor, lets you rewrite, overall if you ask her questions about your paper she will help you out. We had thanksgiving and end of the semester party.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Her style of teaching includes heavy dialogue. She does tend to go off topic, but it always ends up becoming a great conversation with the class. She likes to ask questions that get you thinking. We dig deep into the readings and have interesting conversations about every aspect of the material. She is approachable.

Very enjoyable class. I would be prepared to read because each class is based on a reading that she has assigned. Have yet to receive my overall grade, however I have so far received an A on my midterm. Overall, great professor and she is HILARIOUS. Loved her and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing her again for another class.

Every week, read 1-3 short stories. The class and the professor discuss each reading like its book club, the best part because she is hilarious and engaging. No writing in class, just lots of talking. But the midterm, final, and research paper is the real difficulty, She's a lil harsh on those but not impossible or unreasonable.

Her class was very fun and philosophical. Interesting texts with even more interesting class discussions. Take home mid term and final that are not hard at all, only 5-7 page research paper. Work for online learning was simple weekly paragraph turn ins about the text. She was helpful, fair, and overall hilarious. She's a boomer though, be warned.

This professor has her PHD and should not be taken lightly. She is serious about her assignments. Please read the material and participate. She does provide very interesting material that you will enjoy reading. Do the readings, and be articulate in your papers. She is not an easy grader, but I like and respect her. She is engaging in class.

Took her in Fall 2020. The class was centered around drama/theater, plays, etc. The plays were short, but we had to read one every 2 days or so which sucked. There were weekly discussions on BlackBoard and had to respond to 2 people each time for credit. If I recall, there were 2 or 3 papers, but she definitely reads them thoroughly.

She's honestly really sweet and caring. She gave 3 papers that were two pages each and a 5-page final research paper. If you listen to the tips she gives she'll definitely help improve your writing. She is extremely open-minded and there's a chance to revise your papers. She purposely grades papers harshly so you revise them and send them again.

Loved her so much for ENGL110 that I took her the next semester for ENGL152. She is very chill and witty and understanding of personal problems. Makes class feel like a book club with friends. Dr. Sirlin is great! Her class tackled complex issues while being inclusive of absolutely everyone. She expects that you read and participate, so the textbook is definitely a requirement. In class written midterm, and a take home Final. She never overloaded us with readings. All in all, a great addition to your schedule if you need a later class!

I took Professor Sirlin back in Fall 2022 and just now am getting to the rating.. she is so sweet. Literally the kindest professor I have had the pleasure of having! She helped me in so many ways in class and I could not thank her enough, she is a literal angel! I loved her!

This really felt like a book club! Three papers and she lets you resubmit for feedback and better grade. She's really funny and down to earth. I loved all of our discussions on different stories.

Best English professor at QC, and I'm not an English major, and enjoyed it. Just expect a lot of writing. You will not fall asleep in this class.

Dr. Sirlin is funny and laid back. She wants to see her students succeed and cares a lot. Her readings and questions really get you thinking and they are a bit on the daring side but I enjoyed that a lot. I had her for ENGL242.
