Great Person...Hard Professor!!! Very Very Hard!!!

She was a very hard and demanding teacher, yet I still enjoyed her class!

This prof can TEACH!!! She is passionate about what she does, very clear, and the best lecuturer I've had so far. If you have no interest in learning about sociology then do not take her. She is difficult, but you'll learn.

Dr. Matthews is a brilliant woman who is easy to understand..........

Dr. Matthews is intelligent and passionate about her subject. Her class is fun and interesting, but the exams are difficult.

She knows how to teach, her lectures are very fun and interesting and you get into some very unique discussions in her class. Defintely worth the time and money. READ and Listen and you'll get an A.

Awesome teacher, if you want to learn, you will, classes are never boring, but she expects that you take the time to read on your own, won't baby you, but the best professor i've had!

Very FUN Class to take. Hard tests but not if u do the reading required of you. Few chances for extra credit. Involves class A LOT. Lectures are passionate and keep your attention. Distributes study guides online. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Very hard tests

She is an incredible teacher but her tests are just way too hard. She has a lot of group discussions. She always has great stories and examples that explains what shes talking about. But the tests kill me every time. She is kinda sexy in a wierd way.

Interesting professor, knows ow to keep your attention. Exams come word for word from the text book. Wonderful personality and really makes sociology interesting. I would take her again. The class is only hard if you don't read.

i love the class. she makes it very intersting and tells it like it is. her tests are hard though and to hard to pass. i would take her. she is a good teacher

Fabulous teacher! Had her at Allegheny. You get out of it what you put into it, but she encourages everyone (regardless of race, religion, gender) to work to their fullest potentials. EUP is lucky to have such an asset and strong role model for women.

i loved this class and i love this professor. She would say the funniest things, understood the weather was bad alot and wouldnt stress attendance, but coming to class was always fun. Grading wasn't bad, make sure you do the extra credits.

she does count attendance (although she cancels class a lot if the weather is bad). going to class didn't really help because her tests were essay, and the study guide was just questions about the book. wasn't a bad class though, and nice lady.

made me more aware of social constructs - thanks helping me open my eyes and mind

Awesome prof. She does activities in her long classes that correspond to what you're learning in class and it helps you better grasp the concept she's presenting. Her tests are hard, but she's worth taking. She seems to have extensive knowledge and presents topics so they're easy to understand.

She's great, intelligent, open-minded,interesting - take her!!

Loved her. She is awesome, I would take her again, she presents material in a factual way, with great examples. She is excited about everything, not boring at all.

She is a great prof. Very helpful and funny. She will skip over sections if you don't have any questions, but if you don't then it shouldn't be a problem. She makes you work but is very helpful and her assignments were actually enjoyable.

awesome professor that makes you think about your role in society while introducing and clarifying aspects of society that aren't regularly examined but widely criticized. would recommend to anyone, as long as they're hard working and open-minded. some of her opinions are strong, but she's very interested in other people's points of view.

she cracks me up! im an art major and her sociology class is one of my faves! i had my first test in her class today- 60 multiple choice- total breeze if you do the study guide, which shes send to you through your email! (way convenient)

Dr. Matthews is an awesome woman! She's super-intellegent and class is EXTREMELY interesting - although, it does not provide enough to do well on exams, which are all essay. You must attend class and take notes, but read as well. Difficult professor in the fact that she expects exactly what she should from a college student, however most students are not used to putting that much into a class, especially if you take her for an elective course - in that case, may not be worth the struggle for a good grade

She is extremely interesting...I enjoy going to her classes!

Very intersting class i would take her again without question.. sometimes lectures will stray from topics so be sure to ask questions when you are unclear about something

i really like her as a person, she is very smart and nice, but her tests are just way too hard, but she is an awsome person, but i failed soc with her, took fiala and got an a in same class, so whats that tell ya, but as i said she is awsome as a person, just tests are too hard, but gotta love her.

HARD. That's the only way to describe it!!!! Great woman. Very intelligent. But HARD. Do not take this class if you are going to have a rough semester. TESTS ARE MIND-BLOWING. And whatever you do DO NOT TAKE HER AND DR. TAYLOR TOGETHER... WAYYYYYYY TOO MUCH WORK!

she doesnt go on until everyone understands. half the time you get let out early and she gives take home quizzes. if u listen to her and do her study guides you will pass easily.

Completely insane, but in a brilliant way! I personally loved taking class with Prof. Mattews, and didn't have too hard of a time with it. She is never afraid of students, and gives you whatever feedback you need after the class has ended. I would highly reccomend her...but beware of the website quizzes, they sometimes vanish!

The semester has just started, but I can already tell that Prof. Matthews is an awesome professor, and I am really going to enjoy her class. She seems very interested in her students, and very helpful. She seems to be one smart lady.

Dr. Matthews is an excellent professor who is very willing to help and discuss any questions and concerns.

Two take home tests and a social biography that absolutely consume all of your time during mid-term and finals. She is funny as hell and lectures are great though! Class would be better if she would spread out the writing thoughout the semester.

Smart, funny, reasonable

This is the third SOC class I've taken of Dr. Matthews. The first time I said I wouldn't never take her again but only because she assigns demanding writing assignments. She is very intelligent and funnyand knows her stuff! You really do have to work but you learn so much in her class.

She is a very intelligent lady. She does tend to express radical views very subtly. Other than that, she is a good professor.

I had her for Intro to Soc. Theory. There were a lot of writing assignments and it took her awhile to return things to us, but I ended up with an A. Never got our midterms back though. Long papers, but interesting class. Lots of fun discussions.

Dr. Matthews is a really great professor. She does like to "scare you" with essay questions. However, if you work, you will be just fine. Her discussions are easily the best part of her classes. She is understanding and knows a considerable amount in her field.

She is very intelligent has great stories and interesting support material. the paper was tough but she grades w/leniency proportionate to involvement in class discussion so speak up. She has her opinions on religion and politics and such but wont hold your beliefs against you as long you do not attack individuals/groups. great discussions.

The class is very interesting; there was not a textbook or tests--mostly just class discussions, lectures, and papers. The material we covered was very thought-provoking. Instead of a final we picked a topic for a case study, wrote a 5-pg paper and presented the topic to the class. She is very helpful, and is always willing to give feedback.

Dr. Matthews is an awesome woman. She's a great professor and she really wants you to succeed. Do not expect to be babied, though. She doesn't put up with slackers. Pay attention to lectures and study your notes well before the exams and you'll have no problem passing her class. One group assignment, one essay, and 4 exams. Don't skip her class.

I love Dr. Matthews, she is hilarious, and she is willing to help you succeed in the course. I typically hate politics but taking the course with her I have actually gained a better understanding of it.

Going in to this class, I had absolutely no interest in politics. But Dr. Matthews changed that with her enthusiasm and relatable lectures. Her voice makes you want to pay attention. People complain about the reading but at least you learn from it and have what you need to know for the test. Overall great woman.

I took this class in a 3 week online summer course. From the beginning I knew it would be difficult. However, she relates politics back to modern day topics students might be interested in, and manages to cover the important topics of politics through the use of the online textbook. It's a great class, and she's been super helpful.

Super easy papers due every Friday, took notes but didn't end up needing them. When I tried to communicate with her multiple times I never got a response. If you need a professor that answers your emails, don't take her. She's a great person and professor, this class was easy; the emails are my only complaint (Very democratic by the way)

I really liked this professor. She's good at having and controlling conversations without yelling or disrespecting anyone. This class specifically is new to Edinboro (2024) so she was a little frazzled but I expect it'll get better with the test semester out of the way.
