HARD. STAY AWAY. Takes forever to get grades back. You won't know what you have until a few days before the final and it's hard! Tests on super specifics and teaches broad concepts. Hours of extremely hard homework that doesn't really help. STAY AWAY. I wish I would have listened to the people on here.
I really liked Dr. Yngard's class. Yes, it's difficult, but you get out what you put in. As to her accent, I had no problem understanding her. Do the online homework! It really helps. Also, go to the S.I. sessions if you're unclear on anything. The only drawback is that her grading is pretty slow.
She just teaches by just reading straight off of power points from the book. Also, the examples she does in class are extremely easy and the loads of mastering chemistry that she gives to you is extremely hard. It is near to impossible to get A's on her tests and I'm an honors student that used to love chemistry.
Not the best teacher, but not the worst either. She gives a ton of Mastering Chemistry homework, some of which is rather irrelevant and is worth only 10% of your final grade. Attendance and clicker questions make up 5% of your grade. The tests are tough. She is nice and will help you out...sometimes. I got a B so I'm not going to complain.
This professor is TOUGH!!! I sailed through chemistry in high school. She moves around the due dates of Mastering Chemistry a lot, so watch out for that. I found it really hard to maintain interest in her class. Watch out for tricky iClicker questions. Tests are HARD. I was able to pull off an A on the exam, but ended up with a B in the class.
I took chem in highschool and thought this class was a breeze. There is a ton of homework, but if you understand the homework, you will do well on the tests. A lot of her test questions come from the homework or examples she gives in class. Go to class! She's not very helpful so don't bother with office hours. She curves tests about 3 points.
She is tough! If your answers wrong, you get at most 10% credit so practically NO partial credit! She's nice though and not hard to understand even though she has a strong accent.
good teacher. decently hard tests. helps you out alot on the final. great test reviews.
DO NOT TAKE HER!! She is a surefire GPA killer. Her tests are nothing like the mastering chemistry problems and old tests from previous semesters help very little. She also assigns way too much Mastering Chemistry homework! Stay away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Her tests seemed absolutely impossible to make a good grade on. Mastering Chem (online homework) was overwhelming, took hours to complete, and some of the work was unrelated. I had a decent understanding of chemistry prior to taking this course and failed. If you have any other option for a professor, I STRONGLY advise you to take them instead.
One of the easiest Chem 1 teachers at Auburn. I don't know why she has bad reviews. Go to class and study your notes, you'll do fine. The MasteringChemistry boosts your grade and if you know how to do those problems the test will be a breeze. She is also extremely helpful in office hours and goes out of her way to hold review sessions before tests.
I loved her class! She wants you to do well and goes out of her way to help. The homework helps your grade and she often extends the deadline. Her tests are very fair if you can do the homework problems and have looked over the concepts in the notes. Chemistry is hard but she is probably one of the easiest Chem 1030 teachers at Auburn. Take her!
Pros. Yngard is an okay professor. The class will be pretty easy if you have a solid background in chemistry. Her tests are pretty striaght forward and she allows for some corrections. The final is not bad. Would recommend!
Unless you have already mastered Chemistry, do NOT take her. Her tests are not at all like the simple chapter slides, nor are they similar to the homework. I remember getting back her tests , and seeing 50's and 60's on most of the exam papers. She has no interest in helping anyone even if you talk to her after class or send numerous emails.
Do not take this class lightly. If you have Dr. Yngard go ahead and drop the class while your grade still lives. If you are the sorry soul to be stuck with her then your destiny is to fail the class or come extremely close to it. The lectures are not anything like the tests. She doesn't post your average on Canvas either.
Difficult class. Doesn't really care to help. I went to her office ours to discuss a test and she kind of hurried me out. SI review test is nothing like her test, she briefly goes over the material on the board and has detailed tests. Her TAs are extremely inconsistent, my friend received more points than I did for same exact problems.
Failed the class the first time and GAPed it and failed again. She is horrible. She switched to using ALEKS which is awful because it never loads on your computer. Unless you are a teacher's pet, you probably would be better off not taking her. The tests are impossible so have fun. She also thinks she is funny but she is not. She is terrifying!!!!!
This is not a hard class at all. All of the homework is on ALEKS, and it's actually pretty useful. Her slides in class provide a solid overview of information, but be sure to read the textbook before tests to get a little bit more explanation.
If you work really hard you may pull off a D. Her exams are nothing like the lecture or Aleks so while you feel like you're learning you still fail the tests. Do not take this class if you care about your GPA.
She is not a good professor. I worked my butt off, never missed a lecture, spend over 43 hours on homework over the semester, and pulled a C by the miracle of God. Aleks, and her lecture examples are nothing like her exams. If you can switch to a different chem professor, do it.. if not, prepare to work your butt off for little to no reward.
Tests are long and somewhat difficult. I ended up with a high B, but she wouldn't round up my 89.7 to a 90 which really annoyed me. Do the online homework because it will help you on the tests. Take good notes in class and if you have an SI attend their sessions. All in all not so bad.
Chemistry is a difficult subject. I felt like during the lectures I understood the material, but then when it came time for the tests it was difficult. She isn't the worst, but be prepared to work hard.
She is a great teacher and makes class very interesting. I sat through every class and understood it when she taught, BUT when it came test time, I bombed every time. No matter how hard I studied or how well I thought I understood the material, the tests are rough. I will be retaking it next semester with another teacher.
Great professor, accessible via email and during office hours (though you often have to wait your turn). After reading the chapters and studying lectures carefully for the tests, found the tests very manageable. Tests reflected ALEKS and lecture problems well. Pay attention to detail! Recommend highly.
I can't speak to her helpfulness and I never attended the reviews, but in class she was happy to answer questions and/or expand on ideas. She did not, however, take a great deal of time to truly clarify the concepts (in line with most professors). You'll have to gain a deeper understanding on your own. I got an A in the course without a hiccup.
get ready to work hard. doing the online homework is a must to have a chance at passing. her lectures are relatively basic, takes iClicker questions for a grade, but they are NOT like the tests. tests are always tough, class average always around 65, no curve. make sure your tests are graded correctly I always found I earned at least 5 more points
Coming into Yngard's CHEM1030 class I took AP Chem in high school. After taking class, I still like chemistry, but I don't love it. She made easy topics I already understood confusing & I wasn't a fan of her lectures. Do the Aleks hw, That's how I learned everything & made a B in the class. I wouldn't recommend her,but she's not terribly awful.
She is one of the worst professors I have ever had. I should have listened to the people who told me to drop her class because now my GPA is shot because of her incredibly hard tests that are nothing like her lecture problems. DROP HER IF YOU CAN. I worked my butt off and did not do well at all.
She was one of the worst teachers I have had in a long time. Her lecture problems are nothing like the test problems. If you are concerned about keeping a good GPA drop her if you can.
This is a very hard class. Her tests are pretty hard, but if you study all her notes you can make a B no problem. Her accent is a little hard to get used to, but after a week you get used to it. She curves some of her tests, but not all of them. And she is very unwilling to give you points back on tests, even if you deserve them.
Did all my ALEKS, went to every class, and came out with a 79, which she would not bump to a B. Her tests were all the exceptions so learning the normal rules of chemistry was pointless. Took the old tests to my high school chem teacher and he said it was cruel to give a test like that. Go to SI, it was the only thing that kept my grade at a C.
She is a vast improvement over my high school teacher, and is clear most of the time. however, make sure that you take detailed notes about everything she writes and says because the tests will sneak up on you otherwise.
Worst teacher EVER!!
Test are are very hard. I felt like I did pretty well on most of the test only to get back my grade as a C or D. Turns out her grading is just awful. She won't give you much partial credit at all even if you deserve it. Doesn't prepare students for test and grading is insane.
Yngard's test are rough. You won't do well unless you do all the Aleks and go to every class. Her lectures are the most boring things in the world. Drop if possible.
Terrible, terrible, terrible. She was put on probation two years ago for not passing enough students if that tell you anything.
Yngard is an OK professor. Does the minimum in explanation in lecture. Office hours, she is a really easy to approach person and helpful. Her tests are crazy hard, and you will need to really really know your stuff to make a good grade. She can be hard to understand at times but it is not that bad. I mainly taught myself and used ALEKS.
Test are extremely difficult, you can study for hours on end and still not be able to know what to expect on it. No test review or study guide given, refuses to give the class average or the exam averages on canvas because they are so bad. I will advise everyone I know looking to take CHEM-1030 to avoid this professor at all costs.
She goes over everything that will be on the tests in class. If you want a good grade you have to pay attention in class and read the book. Know the material very well and an A is possible.
Class is boring, she mainly reads from her PowerPoints and doesn't really explain it. She will work some problems, and most she will just give an answer. She isn't the easiest to understand since she has an accent. Her tests are hard. On the last test she wouldn't give us credit for a problem she graded wrong, even if we got it right. Don't take!
This class is absolutely awful. AVOID HER. AVOID HER RIGHT NOW. She talks down to her students and then expects them to respect her. She loves to talk about how awful you are because she knows everyone failed.(but doesn't tell you the averages on the tests)34ths of my class has to re-take Chem 1030. I don't but may the odds be ever in you favor.
She is a tough teacher, no way to sugarcoat it. She expects a lot out of you from an individual student level. Does not spoon feed you the information, if you want to learn it then learn it. She's tough but will respect her after it. Work hard and do not back out on taking her because people can't handle college chemistry.
she was an awful teacher
I took 3 years of advanced chemistry in high school (got a high A in all) and could not manage an A in her class. Her grading and tests are ridiculously hard and she is in no way helpful. It would be worth switching out of her class and into an 8AM. She gives iclicker quizzes as a grade and for attendance.
Difficult class but a good grade is achievable if you try to really learn the material. Ended up with a B with lots of effort -reading the book, and by attending the SI sessions.
Dr. Yngard's accent is a little hard to get used to. Her tests are tough, but true to the material she covers. Be sure to write down and know how to do the examples she does in class. Random iClicker quizzes to check attendance every week or so. Make sure to complete your weekly ALEKS assignment for easy points.
Yes, you're reading this right. If you are willing to sit down and ACTUALLY study thoroughly, the class is absolutely manageable. However, you will notice that the class has people who simply won't do do the work. That's why it's so "hard." It's all about work ethic for this course. So grab a textbook and study hard. You can do it.
Do you ALEKS, go to all SI sessions, DO NOT skip class, and read the books. She requires attendance via iClicker and you really work for your grade. One of those classes you get what you put into it. Don't expect an easy A or even B for that.
Acent is hard to understand, writting is not legible on board, test are extremely hard, hard grader. Changes dates of homework unannounced.
I had Yngard for CHEM1030 as well & I wish I had learned my lesson. I did badly in both & it's my fault because I procrastinated ALEKS (homework) & didn't study well enough. She uploads the powerpoints, but it's best to be in class so you can see how problems are worked out & get the iClicker questions. She's pretty okay if you aren't like me.
This class is do-able but you absolutely must go to class and do that homework to get a good grade regardless of your test scores. She does i-clicker quizzes most days that count as a quiz grade so go to class! If you go everyday and study, you shouldn't have much of a problem.
Yngard is one of those professors that students either respect or they hate. I did not do well in her class because her lectures and slideshows show very basic problems, but on the tests she asks questions that I had never seen in my life. I went to every class, took great notes and studied almost everyday. Expect clicker quizzes and lots of ALEKS
She assigned 10 ALEKS topics. ALEKS was 10% of the final grade. There were 3 tests and 1 final exam. If you end up borederline after finals, she will round up if you did your ALEKS. There were clicker questions for accuracy every class (attendance check). She is a very commanding speaker and her tests are tough. Tests are multiple choice and math.
Good luck taking Yngard. I put 100 percent into this class and did not even pass.
HORRIBLE class and teacher! This is the worst class I have ever taken at auburn! I tried really hard. I did all of the homework and studied. I went to every single class. Passing the tests was impossible!
I am a pre-pharmacy major and really enjoyed Professor Yngard's class! She gives a clicker quiz in class most days which will help you out with some extra points if you do well on them. It is also how she takes attendance. Tests are tough. To study, I went through all of the in chapter problems and came out with a high A.
I had to take this because it's a core class for my major, and someone had recommended Yngard to me. Personally, I really enjoyed her class. Just make sure you do all your ALEKS, know how to use the formulas (she gives you a formula sheet on the tests), AND MAKE SURE YOU GO TO CLASS. She takes attendance with an iClicker. Overall, I liked her.
Good professor overall. It is a difficult class, and you do have to study, but her lectures are pretty clear.
She's really cool but this class is no joke. She's tough. Theres a lot of homework that you do though ALEKS and its possibly the most annoying thing ever, but it does help you understand the material. Tests are pretty hard. She doesn't scale. Chemistry is a tough class and she's a tough teacher, but she really is nice and helpful.
She's tough and hard to understand at first. She flies through material and the material is hard to understand how she teaches it. And she also uses every minute of class she has. TAKE A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR. I made a 100 in CHEM 1030 and I'm struggling in her class now.
Worst professor ever. Boring lectures, annoying quirks like taking 5 minutes to go over why 6 minus 5 is 1 and not -1. Boring subject, boring professor, lame class. Maybe someone else can make chemistry interesting for you, but she cant.
Worst class of freshman year. Went eveytime, study days before and couldn't pass a test. Avoid her class
Boring lectures for the most part, though she can be funny at times. Tests are hard.
Professor Yngard is most definitely the hardest professor I have ever had. I spent entire nights in the library the entire semester and could not pass a test. She grades extremely hard and does not believe in partial credit or test dropping/curving. AVOID HER CLASS!
You won't learn anything in class, but you need to come since she gives pop quizzes. As long as you get your ALEKS homework done, you should be able to know enough to get by. If you can get another Chem teacher, go ahead and switch.
Dr. Yngard is great. She knows what she is talking about in chemistry and she is pretty funny. She uses the whole class time and it can be boring but go to class. she takes clicker quizzes for attendance plus you'll miss a lot if you skip. Tests aren't easy but SI practice tests helped a lot.
I have never studied so much for a class and managed to fail the tests. Also, I still haven't figured out what she based her test on because I'm pretty sure it wasn't the book and it wasn't Aleks. I looked at some of my friends chem. tests from other professors and they weren't nearly as hard as the ones in Yngards class. PS. Aleks takes forever.
Go to class! iClicker questions every day that are for a grade and will help bump your average up a bit at the end of semester. I thought this class was a little too tough for an entry-level chem class. I studied hours and hours for every exam and came out with a B+. Final exam was curved and easier than her other 3 exams. Also, DO YOUR ALEKS.
Tests are impossible. Studied hard for each one and made C's and a B. ALEKS takes forever and doesn't help much. Only 3 tests and no extra points opportunities. GO TO CLASS because she gives i-clicker quizzes every day for a grade, and they tend to be difficult. Went to office hours, but they didn't help at all. AVOID HER.
Dr. Yngard is a good teacher and a nice person. However, her tests are very difficult. I studied more for this class than any other. My highest grade was the final exam. ALEKS homework counts as half of what other professors count it (so don't expect it to help your grade much). IClicker quizzes are tough, too. I wouldn't advise anyone to take her.
Good lecture. Difficult tests. An A is possible. I studied a good bit and received a B. In order to make an A, you would most likely have to study every day after class. She really knows what she is talking about, and she is very clear in describing everything. ALEKS due every week. Random iclicker quizzes are given as well.
Took her for Chem 1030 and 1040 and they were by far the most difficult classes I've taken. I am not the greatest chemistry student, but her texts are extremely difficult. If you struggle with chemistry avoid her at all costs.
I took AP Chem in high school, so I didn't find the material too difficult. With Aleks, I believe a student new to chemistry could do well if he or she wanted to. Her tests are straight from Aleks, the homework site, so make sure you study that and your notes, and you will be just fine.
She is a teacher that does not care how much effort you put into the class. I went to class every single day, read the book, went to every SI, has multiple meetings with her, and still failed the class. She is a terrible professor, that does not care about her students.
Do not take. The problems she goes over in class are flipped on the actual test. She moves fast as well. Iclicker questions are almost ever class and they count towards attendance. Her clarity on problems are poor and you pretty much have to teach yourself.
She is a great professor. She may be a little intimidating, but she is extremely helpful during office hours. Her tests can be tough because she will put exceptions to rules on there (like electron configurations). Definitely glad I had her. The uniform final was a breeze because she made sure you knew everything.
Barely made it through. Long awful lectures. Hardest test I've seen. Must go to class for iclicker. AVOID!!!
Go to class. Dr. Yngard's lectures are very helpful & include practice problems. iClicker questions are randomly given throughout class, there are a lot of Aleks assignments, and there are 3 exams and a final. Overall, if you take notes in class, read the book, and do your Aleks/practice problems, you will do fine in the class.
The worst chemistry professor i've had at Auburn. Doesn't care how her students do. She's a very tough grader and can be rude. Seems like she has a definite complex and loves to assert her dominance in meaningless ways. Do not take if you actually want to learn from a decent teacher.
Dr. Yngard... Such a hard class... Her tests are VERY CHALLENGING and most of the grade. So if you do bad, good luck because she usually doesn't scale. HW is easy, but only tiny portion of the final grade..
Honestly, I thought Dr. Yngard was a great professor, but my grades did not reflect. I studied days for her tests and just could not do as well as I wanted to. Everything is straightforward, but it was definitely a challenge.
You have to study outside of class to get the grade you want. Her tests' questions were sometimes worded weirdly and could be hard. You don't have a lot of opportunities to raise your grade, so be careful. Does not believe in scaling. Personally I would not take her again.
I actually really liked Dr. Yngard. She is a great teacher, explains the material really well, she really cares about her students. I went to SI sessions weekly and did my ALEKS, but I never opened the textbook and came out with a 99.5. The tests are fair and come from her notes and she prepares you for the final. Overall great teacher!
If you want an accurate review, do NOT listen to the negative reviews below, a. Dr. Yngard is a very good professor and cares about her students. Her exams are fair and come from problems we did in class. Prepares you for final better than the other chem profs. Exams aren't curved, but the final was! Finished with a 98%!
This is one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. She is not very helpful and doesn't know how to explain things in a way you would understand. If you understand chemistry and study early on you can make a good grade, but do not expect this to be an easy class.
If you know what you learn and how to solve the problems, you will just be fine. But her tests are hard and she is really tough grader. She knows what she teachs exactly. You should understand her i clicker questions because she uses them on her tests too.
Lectures are sometimes a bit confusing, but her tests aren't near as difficult as people act like. She is stingy with test points. Overall would recommend and take again.
Dr. Yngard is a good teacher and makes class fun, but it's when you get to her tests. Her tests are very hard. You definitely have to study a lot for tests and go to SI and study partners. I would have taken someone else if I had the chance. Shes not the worst you can get though.
She can be a rough teacher because she grades pretty strictly. However the trick to her class is knowing how to do the Aleks and knowing how to do the problems on the powerpoints if you know that you will get an A on every test. Getting old tests does not hurt either lots of the questions are very similiar
hard grader. If you get chemistry you will do great but be ready to study! make sure you know how to work out all her questions on the power points and do the questions she tells you to go home and work on bc those questions WILL be on the test! but she doesn't explain it next class so go to SI and they normally work it out.
no scaling no extra credit tests are insanely difficult
This class is very challenging. Her wording of problems is much different than the homework that is assigned which makes doing them difficult. Tests are difficult and partial credit is barely offered on them. She has high expectations that almost everyone cannot meet. Many people have dropped her class this semester and failed exams
Yngard knows her stuff she just doesn't know how to word it and teach it to others. She teaches you a topic one way and quizzes you that way, but then the tests are completely different. It's hard to figure out sometimes what she is even asking on the test. Solid B right now, just hoping it stays that way. If you have another option, take it.
She is the best chemistry teacher I have ever had. Test are pretty straightforward if you have studied which at this point you have to do if you care about your grades. Test questions are similar to the iclicker (which you must have) and powerpoint problems she goes over. I have learned a lot and feel very prepared for the final. Would take again.
The only reason her score is so low is because Chemistry is a hard subject. She does a good job of explaining what you need to know. Read the book for concepts you don't understand and go over problems from the slides, book, and iclicker questions. After taking this class (and failing) with Squillacote, Dr. Yngard's class seemed like a breeze.
This is not a class that you will be able to simply show up and ease through. Yngard teaches you the material and tests it in different ways on her exams. Most of the test questions come from clicker questions and power point examples. Other than that, show up to class, do ALEKS, have a clicker, and you should be okay.
If you can avoid her, do. I went to SI and had a tutor, but I made a C on every test. She is a good teacher, but the way that she words her test questions is very confusing. She does not curve or give any bonus opportunites.
She isnt a bad teacher. She delivers the material well in a way we understand & quizzes you on it in class. However her tests are hardly like examples we worked in class/very hard. I went to almost every SI & had a B in the class (better than most students)-before the final. I worked VERY hard. The final was RIDICULOUS. I hope I can still get a C.
She is difficult to understand. Her lectures are scattered, and so it is necessary to study the book thoroughly. Tests are hard because she words questions oddly and she doesn't give much partial credit. The class requires a lot of studying, but it is possible to do well.
Gives "partial credit" on tests, but took tons of points off for simple mistakes, even if all the math was correct. She explains things well, but I felt like the material on the test was completely different/way harder than what we ever talked about in class. Barely passed all her tests, but easily made an A on the final (which she didn't write).
She known what she's talking about but she explains it like you should had already learned it. I'm assuming many of my fellow class mate will be taking this class again but with another teacher. To be honest this class took away time from other classes causing grades to be significantly lower. I suggest choosing another chem teacher.
You really have to work hard in this class. She knows what she's talking about. Test can be tough but they are certainly doable. I never studied for her test and my lowest test grade was a 70. Made a 93 on Final. iClicker questions everyday for attendance grade. No extra credit or a curve. I honestly think she's a great professor.
I went to all classes, studied extensively, and had a tutor. Three of the four tests were scaled but only about 3-5 points. I ended one point from the grade I needed and, even with great attendance and working so hard, she would not entertain the idea of giving the point.
Dr. Yngard is a hard ass but a great hard ass at that. She doesn't take stupidity lightly and isn't a professor to give in. She stands her ground. She is an excellent teacher, and it is obvious that her ultimate goal is for the students to understand the material. If you're use to memorizing in order to get an A, I would not take this class.
You will hear a LOT of folks say she was aweful, but the course itself is very hard. If I studied the book harder, I would have done better. PREREAD! iclicker questions matter, study the theory from the book, and the majority of the test questions are directly from the book, iclicker, and lecture. practice practice practice problems.
She yells at students and you never know when an iClicker question is for attendance or a pop quiz. However, she's a great lecturer and makes the material easier to understand, but her tests are nothing like what she teaches and are really hard to pass. She has also been on probation for failing too many students. Avoid like the plague.
Yngard was not the best professor I've ever had, but was definitely not the worst. The class itself is difficult. My Professor at the school I transferred from for Chem 1 was ridiculously easy. So I had a little transfer shock. The one gripe I have is that I made B's on 3 tests and a D on one and got a 79 in the course and she won't bump.
Dr. Yngard is a professor that is not well-liked among most people at Auburn. I never had any sort of problem with her. Her lectures were helpful if you took notes and paid attention. Some of the questions on tests were difficult, but certainly not impossible, and if you try hard enough, you will pass this class with at least a B.
If you do not have a strong Chemistry background, avoid Yngard at all cost. This is my second time taking CHEM 1040 and I have been stuck with her both times. You must know every type of problem back to front if you want to make a B or higher. I-clicker questions are used for attendance but also counted for right and wrong which is unfair.
She is a decent teacher but she is never clear of what is going to be on the test. She puts her notes online but they do not help much. Most people I know have a C or below in her class. It is a very tough class and I would recommend another professor.
Dr. Yngard is by far the best CHEM teacher I've had at AU. Her lectures are pretty easy to understand, and she explains both the mathematics and concepts behind the material well. As I have a strong background in Chemistry, I did not find the class too hard. As long as you attend class and do the problems given in class and ALEKS you should pass.
For some reason chemistry professors have a talent at making really easy information seem hard. Yngard is no exception. The class should be easy, but she makes it hard. If you aren't good at chemistry, don't take her. If you are good at chemistry you probably aren't reading this review.
I thought her tests were fair and the problems came directly from the lecture slides she posts online. She gave plenty of partial credit too. My only complaint is that she will not budge an inch if you wanted something like your grade bumped from an 89.99 to a 90. Any help like that is not going to come from her.
Worst teacher I have had so far. Impossible to understand and most of the time tests have problems that we have never learned. Go ahead and switch out before you GPA takes a hit
Every one makes it out to seem that Yngard it such a terrible teacher, but she is honestly one of the best teachers I've ever had. Every thing you're tested on is in her slides and she is very fair in her grading. If you pay attention in class you should be able to do well, but if you lazy you won't make it out alive.
Not an awful teacher like everyone says. Her tests are very straightforward so if you put the work in, you'll do fine. There are i clicker questions in class that account for 5% of your grade. Aside from that all you really need to do is read the textbook and do work her math problems on canvas and go to class occasionally to succeed.
She is what you would expect from a science professor. No nonsense. If you study, you will be fine. Dont be scared to ask her questions in class. She warms up after a while, but she hates when you don't study or make silly mistakes because she can tell when the class didn't pay attention.
One of the best professors I've had here. Tests are very straightforward. If you study and go to class, you'll do well. This is a weed out class so a lot of people who aren't meant to be in science fail and drop out after this. A serious student will not have a problem. Aleks is time consuming but helps. Scales 1-2 points. Made a 100 on the final.
Contrary to popular belief, Dr. Yngard is a great professor and she gives you all the material you need to prepare for her exams. If you attend class for iClickers, complete Aleks and go to SI you will have no problem. Her exams are pretty straightforward and most of the time she takes calculation problems straight from her ppt.
Ignored wants you to succeed so if you put in the work and are diligent, you will love her!
Thick accent, but that is not the problem. The problem is she is the hardest test giver for Chem 1 at AU& is TERRIBLE at teaching. She has no empathy for her students (told me I should change majors). However, I made a D with her, took it the summer after (w/ diff professor) & made an A. It's not the material, it's the professor. Avoid at all costs
Let me be clear. She was hard but a good professor if that makes sense. Not an easy A but you do learn a lot so at the end of the day she is a great professor but hard.
Her lectures are pretty strait forward. Her exams, however, are not. It is rare that she will tell you what will be on the exams and they are heavy on just a few topics. Attendance is non-negotiable, if you have a schedule conflict or ever have to leave class early she will most likely not care. I would suggest avoiding her class if you can.
Y'all, this is a weed out class. You have to work for your grade. I'm studying for the DAT now and I am so thankful I had her because I actually LEARNED chemistry and feel very prepared. The Aleks is annoying but it helped a lot. Go to class, study the book, work the chapter problems! Common final was easy because I was so prepared for it.
TBH, Yngard isn't as bad as everyone says she is. Just pay attention to lectures and take your time with ALEKS and you'll be fine. Everything from her tests are covered in lecture. iClicker questions are for attendance. 1 point for answering, 2 points for answering with the correct answer. 25 iClicker points total.
Her lectures are entertaining and she clearly cares about what she's teaching. Do the aleks homework and pay attention during the lectures and you'll do fine. Put in the work and you should get a good grade.
Please, do yourself a favor and do not take Yngard. She doesn't communicate with her SI instructors therefore, you are not properly prepared for the tests like you should be when you take the time to go to SI. Sure she's funny but her tests will kill you. There is NO extra credit. There are so many wonderful professors at Auburn. Take them instead!
Dr. Yngard is a a pretty good lecturer and a nice person overall, but her tests are really hard. They weren't very much like her lectures. I found SI a literal grade saver. So overall, love her as a person, but everything else...
Dr. Yngard is an amazing professor! Don't get me wrong, her tests are hard and she expects a lot from her students, but her lectures are always clear and very detailed. She gives plenty of examples and does her best to make sure students understand. You have to come to class because attendance counts, but if you come and study you'll do fine!
changed grading policy 3 times during the semester. Attendance is "mandatory" but you get 4 absences & as long as you aren't failing at the end of the semester she doesn't enforce it. Lectures are her just reading straight from the powerpoint & not explaining anything. the only reason I passed this class is my SI instructor.
There is a lot of Aleks homework which is mostly unhelpful and tedious. The lectures are entertaining and funny so, it is easy to stay attentive during them. Review the lecture slides and work the problems on them and you should end up with a "B". The in class iclicker questions can be difficult, but it doesn't count much towards your grade.
Requires a lot of effort, but very nice and helpful during office hours. Some multiple choice questions come right from her lectures.
Worst professor I've ever seen. Lectures are not helpful and very boring. Textbook is the only reason I learned anything. Her tests are extremely difficult, and she does not teach the material well enough to help you pass. I strongly advise against taking her if possible. (I have all A's in my other engineering classes, and a D in this one.)
Yngard is an amazing professor!! Chem 1030 is a hard class no matter who you have. Yngard's lectures are long but she makes them engaging and funny. Her tests are really hard but always fair based on the lectures. If you're willing to put in the work, Yngard teaches you more than enough to be successful.
This class is insanely difficult for an entry level class. You have hours of hw a week but it only counts for 10% of your grade. Your grade really only comes from the tests, which can be very difficult. If you dont make an A or B on the first test do yourself a favor and drop the class. I pulled out a B by doing really well on the final
Overall, I do not think Dr. Yngard is a bad professor. I can tell she knows her stuff. As a student coming in with little to no chemistry experience, her class was quite difficult and I am going to have to retake it again next semester. If you have a strong chemistry background, then take her class. If not, stay away.
Dr. Yngard is tough but fair. She is a great lecturer and you will learn. If you're looking for an easy A, find someone else. If you want to learn chemistry, take her. Don't take her if you can't handle blistering sarcasm for breaking class policy. Don't let her catch you eating or using a cell phone unless you want the whole class to know.
She wasn't available that often outside of class hours and when she was, she was rude and not helpful at all. She is a very rude and non understanding person and isn't good at lecturing.
Yngard is a caring woman and honestly knows what she is talking about. Chemistry is tough - no other way around it. I got a B and wasn't totally thrilled but that was due to my own doing. If you work hard, go to SI, read the book, an A is possible. KEEP YOUR GUARD UP AT ALL TIMES - 3 tests, iClicker, and ALEKS.
Her notes are just crudely written powerpoints, and she relies on the homework to truly teach you the material
Her lectures were very informative and entertaining, and I rarely left feeling confused. The tests are hard, but compared to some of the other chem professors here, they aren't unreasonably so. This is one of those classes that you get what you put into it, so if you are halfway decent at chemistry and are willing to put work, you should do fine.
Few people made A's in my class. Not awful but I felt that the there were a few questions on every test that were unfair because they had material we didn't learn or confusing wording that made almost everyone miss the same question. Online homework sucked and I didn't find the lectures very helpful, but Dr. Yngard is pretty funny
Dr. Yngard is no-nonsense, has a hilarious sarcastic sense of humor, and expects you to work. Tests are tough, but not impossible, and I was well-prepared for the common final which was comparatively easy. Lectures are a bit heavy; reading textbook helps. A lot of ppl don't like her, but I'm voluntarily taking her again this spring. ALEKS homework.
Dr. Yngard is underrated. Yes, her class is not a walk in the park, but an A is possible. Her tests are easier if you work problems in the book and read through the chapter. You will thank her later after the final exam. Her tests are 10x harder than the common final at the end of the year and I completely overstudied for it. She is so funny!
Your tests matter with this professor. If that's the main thing you get out of this, hear that. I am now taking Dr. Yngard for CHEM1040 only because I already know what to expect from her. She expects excellence and you better give it to her. She has a good sense of humor and her lectures make sense, but be prepared to put in the time and effort.
Dr. Yngard is pretty tough and can come across as really stern. If you study her examples from the powerpoints and keep up with your ALEKS, you will be fine. But--the tests are pretty much your only assignments, so do well on them.
I knew she was going to be hard going into the class, so I was at least a little prepared. Chemistry is not my strong suit, but I thought she did a pretty good job at explaining the material. There is a lot of outside work for her class though in Aleks and it only counts for a very small portion of your final grade. If you work hard you'll be fine.
Yngard is by far the best chem teacher I've ever had - and I've taken chem for 3 years. She is super straightforward and the test often has questions that are word-for-word from her notes. She has a great sense of humor, but doesn't like laziness. YOU HAVE TO WORK TO GET AN A. IT'S CHEM. If you're willing to put in some effort, take her.
This was the worst experience I've ever had with a class. I devoted most of my time to this class and got no where. She forgets that you are a student and not a master in the subject. She also discourages giving the test back if you believe there was an error in grading because she'll re-grade it and find a fault that she originally missed.
Ppl complain about her, but she's great. She tells you exactly what to read before class, gives practice problems, and I-clicker questions (she puts these on the test). Yes, it is a lot of work, but if you keep up with it, and do what she tells you to do, an A is very obtainable. Only thing is that she doesn't give very many grades, so study hard!
Dr. Yngard is all business. She has high expectations of her students- only take her if you are serious about the class. I enjoyed her class and made an A and I did not think the tests were hard IF you had studied her in class problems from her powerpoint + the book examples. The common final was a breeze. Wish I had taken her for Chem 1!
VERY tough class. Lots of ALEKS hw, but she would move the due date back. 20 q tests. 16 multiple choice, 4 open ended with multiple parts. Gave partial credit on some of those if she saw that you actually tried. The tests were really hard and you only have 50 minutes to complete. She did go over tests in class and worked everything out though.
Yngard is not as bad as she used to be; this semester she began curving tests and giving bonus points that we honestly didn't even deserve. It is chem ii, so you should know what you are getting into when you sign up for the class. The lectures are sub par but you have to go to get attendance/quiz points and for some reason ALEKS is due saturdays??
She is good, but a tough teacher. She expects you to do your homework and read your textbook outside of class to make an A. Dr. Yngard has a sense of humor and is fun. DO NOT BE LATE TO CLASS. Take iClicker questions for a rade and as attendance each day. Dropped our 3 lowest quiz grades if we had less than 3 absences.
Yngard is the best science professor Ive had so far in Auburn. She teaches directly from the book so you know what to expect on the exams. Her lectures are good and understandable. She makes you work for your grade, and trust me, you will get what you deserve. The final was not too bad and it was curved. She also curved all of our 3 exams 3-5pts.
Prof. Yngard is funny, but the PowerPoints she gives tend not to help. For years, according to my advisor, she's been putting things on exams that she did not go over in class. If I had to take chem 1040 over again, I'd take anyone but her.
Lectures are pointless but the daily clicker questions force you to go. She is strict about phones and computers out which is annoying. Her tests are MC and short answer. I never missed a single point of short answer, but would consistently miss 4-5 MC which would unnecessarily hurt my test grades (in the mid to low 80's). ALEKS heavy as expected.
Lectures are pretty good. Stuff she covers in lectures is pretty much all thatll be on tests. Tests arent terrible either; about 18 MC and 3-5 show work problems. If you read the book, do the practice problems she gives you, and study her lecture powerpoints you should be ok. She has review sessions before tests. Final was pretty easy.
Dr. Yngard has a difficult class, is no nonsense, and tells you her expectations and expects you to meet them--but I loved her class because of that. An A is possible if you put in the work for it. Best tip I have is study her slides and example problems in particular, the test is very similar to them.
DO not take this course
Do not take this professor! She is very nice and helpful, but her tests are very deceitful!! It is not that hard of a class but she makes it hard. Only grades are 3 tests, a final, ALEKS, and iclicker. If you end up with her class go to office hours, read chapters, attend SI, and study notes! Do this and you may end with a okay grade.
The hardest professor I've ever taken, the amount of grades is so little that if u mess up on one test, or only get Bs on exams, u won't get an A. I really heavily relied on the textbook and that worked out really well for me. Also go to SI for sure. She is crazy smart, just does not care how her students do. If u can't teach yourself, ur screwed
Barely cares how her students do: doesn't tell class test averages, doesn't scale, will not help in office hours. Highly recommend avoiding her, expects you to have lots of background info. She expects you to read the chapter before class. There are few grades and tests are oddly graded therefore one bad grade screws you over. I dropped this class.
Very hard course, she makes u work for the grade. Worked my ass off for the tests and only got Cs.
She gives lectures from powerpoints but the majority of the tests are from ALEKS homework which you are basically expected to teach yourself. The tests are super difficult and graded super harshly, especially with the majority being multiple choice. Do well on those tests because those basically determine your grade. Do NOT recommend AT ALL.
You get graded on 5 things all semester. Expects you to know things before her lectures, therefore she doesn't teach in depth during class. She just breezes by it like everyone knows what she's talking about. If you are advanced in chemistry already, by all means take her class, but if you are not good with science then I recommend to avoid.
Very rude, will treat you like you're stupid if you come to office hours for help. Not very accessible outside of class. Would strongly recommend against taking Yngard's class.
Doesnt give examples.
The WORST chemistry teacher I have ever had. Includes things on the test that she specifically points out in class and says it wont be on the test. Aleks is a pain and she is rude and expects you to know how to do a problem when she just gives you the answer and no clues in how to do it. Never again will I take her.
She is not a good teacher she is about to fail 60% of her class for the eighth time
She gives out attendance quizzes everyday. Does share your grades so you have to calculate them yourself. Tough grader. Uses ALEKS. So much information 1/2 of it isn't even on the test. Don't take her if you have the option to. Nice but no thanks.
Ms. Yngard is the hardest chem teacher at Auburn. She teaches really well but won't work out example problems. Her tests are beyond hard from MC to long answer with no partial credit. Make sure your clicker works or you also get counted absent. Unless chemistry comes naturally to you, avoid her. She also refuses to round. Said that the first day.
She is really bad. I am really good at Chemistry and had a great teacher in high school, but struggled in this class. Ria does not prepare you at all for her test. I made a better grade on the uniform final than any test in her class, which shows how bad her test are. She does not want to help her students at all.
Dr. Yngard is an intelligent lady and makes the class seem super cake but once you get to the tests, they seem almost impossible to accomplish. I would not recommend anyone to take her class unless you're incredible at chemistry. Also, she will not help your grade at all and does not replace the final with the lowest test grade. ALEKS used.
I enjoyed having Dr. Yngard as a professor! Many say that she is really hard, but it's just because the course itself is harder than what they were used to in high school. Also, she is not as mean as people say. She actually has a really entertaining and dry sense of humor. Just do your work and apply yourself, and you'll be fine. It's college.
Dr Y is great. She is tough though. If taken AP Chem, class is not hard. It moves fast though if you have little Chem background. Kind lady willing to help. ALEKS HW is a lot, so allow time. Only a little curving. Study PPTs. Have good algebra skills. Make yourself fall in love with the subject. Ask questions. Work hard.
Dr. Yngard is a good teacher, but her tests are absolutely impossible. No matter how hard you study, you won't do good. I studied for 2 weeks before tests and still never made above an 82. She won't tell you the class average EVER, so you can't even compare to see how you're doing in the class. She has no interest in your success.
probably worst prof ive ever taken at auburn, literally avoid at all costs. aleks takes 5 years to do and her lectures are 1) boring af, 2) dont help AT ALL with tests & 3) she uses mini quizzes every class to take attendance. do urself a favor and take someone else
THIS PROFESSOR IS THE WORST. DO NOT TAKE YNGARD. The tests are too long and almost impossible to take in 50min!! I went into the test knowing the material really well and came out feeling like I failed. Do not take this class!!!
Do not recommend. Lectures aren't very helpful. She's a bit intimidating. Tough grader. Don't go to class, you won't pass. She uses iclickers for quizzes at the end of every class. She once yelled at us in Dutch because no one responded to her question. By far the worst chem teacher I've ever had.
every single year she tells her classes, "I will fail you all before I curve" and let me tell you, she takes that s*** to heart. honest to god probably the hardest class i've ever taken simply because she makes it so unnecessarily difficult. Will scream at u in another language if she gets mad. tests are absolutely impossible; grade only from tests
DO NOT TAKE! Hardest grader Ive ever had by far, extremely difficult and long tests; it did not matter how much I studied and felt confident, I walked out feeling like I failed. Our test average for one test was a 68, will not curve.
Do not take her class. This is honestly one of the hardest classes I've taken. STRONGLY advice you to take a different Professor.
Do not, and I mean DO NOT, take this class with this woman if you can help it. I fully believe that she seriously does not care to see students succeed. Had to drop this class along with many others in my class. I find it hard to believe that she is still allowed to teach here.
Very loud and annoying, cares very little for her students, shouts unnecessarily loud, obnoxious
Avoid at all costs. Worst professor I have ever had. Her class is so hard compared to other chem classes at Auburn. All other classes give extra credit or drop your lowest test grade but she will do nothing. Seriously awful never take her.
Under no circumstances take Yngard. I took her for Chem 1030 and made an A and decided to take her for 1040 and made an F on the first test. She doesn't release grades until after the withdrawal period forcing me to have a W on my transcript. Not kind, caring, or considerate. DO NOT TAKE.
This is the worst class I have ever taken in my life. She ruined my semester/year. DO NOT TAKE HER. The Tests are so hard and there is an unlikely chance of passing the class. Avoid at all costs!!!!!! Not sure why this woman still has a job
Yngard's class was definitely hard but not impossible. You must come to class as she has iclicker questions that are part of your grade along with 3 tests, ALEKS, and the final. Her tests are usually not very long and reading the book is essential because she may not cover everything in class. If you go to class and read the book, you'll be fine.
she's funny but that did not make this class worth it at all
the HARDEST class and professor ive ever had. Aleks takes forever and is barely helpful for her tests. Her exams are impossible; ive had graduate friends who had straight As throughout college and had struggled to get a B in her class. MORE FORGIVING for 1040 than she was for 1030, but makes little difference when everyone is still failing.
The only class that I had to drop was Dr. Yngards. I thought it was only my fault. I asked around and many have had a similar experience. I found her lectures unhelpful and when I asked for help she told me to read. I tried and still struggled. When I told her so she doubled down and insisted I wasnt trying hard enough. I really expected more.
She gives iClicker quizzes every class. Tests are extremely difficult. Way too much homework on ALEKS which is awful. Does not post grades on Canvas in a way that you can calculate your overall grade. She makes this class way more difficult than it needs to be and will not drop any grades or give extra credit like other professors. Avoid!!
super hard
The negative reviews this professor receives are ill founded. The class is hard, yes. However, a Gen chem course like this is meant to weed people out. As long as you go into this class with that mentality and work hard, an A in this class is more than possible.
the worst possible teacher ever. Took her because it was the only class available for the spring. I made a 90 in chem 1030 and i am not even passing in chem 1040. I truly dont know how auburn hasnt fired her yet. she is getting paid to do research for auburn so she really does not care about her students. DO NOT TAKE HER
Her teaching style is miserable, don't take her class. I was a A student at chem 1030 and A most of my classes. I look at her rating score at the beginning of this semester and though i could handle it anyway. But no, not at all.
She makes it so hard to try and weed people out, which sucks for you if your major isn't even specifically chemistry related. Dropped and took the same class with a different professor who was much better and my average skyrocketed TWENTY-FIVE POINTS. Twenty. Five.
If you are not goochem major or planning to take organic chemistry, DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. She doesn't use any resources on canvas, so I never know when things are due. She also expects her students to put her class before any others, so make sure if you are taking this course you have easy classes along side it so that you can focus on this one.
THIS IS A WEED OUT CLASS. No matter the prof, Chem I will always be a challenge. That being said, Dr Yngard is a challenging professor. Her accent can be tough for some to understand. She has a test drop policy where the final can replace your worst test, and ALEKS can save your grade. No matter who you pick, Chem is gonna tough.
Dr. Y probably can't offer love and care like your mama did. But she is a great professor after all. She will make you work hard because you should. Read the syllabus, play the game according to the rules.
Yngards tests were hard no matter how hard you worked. Had a high B the whole semester and failed the final ending with a C. I begged for a B and her only response was "It's not about how hard you work it's about how much you know". Avoid at all costs I've never had a professor as un understanding as she is.
A ton of people hate on Yngard, but if you take her lectures seriously and take notes, then the tests are not bad. It's a tough course, and Aleks sucks obviously, but overall I think she is one of the better chem teachers here. Her lectures are clear. I had Falcao for 1030, 1040 with Yngard was much better.
She shut me down once after she ASKED ME to email her. Chemistry is hard enough without having the proper help. She claims she wants you to do good in her class, but I have done nothing but fail. I would even call her lazy and repetitive because she has never changed her teaching strategy which is lectures and telling you to read your book.
Honestly this lady sucks. Worst teacher I've ever had. She made a clear effort to be cruel towards her students and could care less if they pass. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER.
I learned more using Youtube because her lectures were a waste of time. Don't take this lady unless you want to learn by yourself with the textbook because she's absolutely no help. I do not recommend.
If you complete the ALEKS, watch her lectures, study and work the powerpoints, and review some of the SI worksheets, you are on an easy track to an A. The content is difficult but Professor Yngard does a fantastic job of explaining.
She is a very hard professor and makes you earn your grades. Don't slouch off, and you'll be fine. I'm usually an A student but was lucky to get a B. Good teacher if you put in the work.
Yngard is genuinely one of the hardest professors I've had at Auburn. I'm going into my senior year, so I've taken a lot of hard classes. I struggled significantly more in Yngard's chem 2 class than I did in organic chemistry. She tries to trick you on tests so it's hard to make an A even if you know the material. Don't take her class!!
I learned more teaching myself by reading the textbook.
This class is made unnecessarily hard for no reason. The content is not taught well.
Ria is an amazing person outside of class and sure does try her best but LORD. I taught myself the material more than she ever taught me. She assumes you already know what she is teaching/talking about and usually only does one example with you. Lectures are long and boring, usually fell asleep in the class. Most of my classmates didn't pass.
If you're willing to put in the effort, you should find success in this course. Dr. Y was my favorite teacher this semester, not because of the content, but because of her character. She makes the class fun with her corny jokes and lively attitude. Tests are fairly difficult, but content is always covered in lectures. Slight accent, but not bad.
The lectures are useless. There is no help for when her students struggle. On top of all of this, she doesn't even let us see what our grade is in the class. I have never felt less motivated in my life. Don't take her class.
lectures are not helpful and after teaching a concept for 10 min you get 2-4 quiz questions, which she gets angry at if you get it wrong. tests are very very difficult and will not be curved (even if over half the class fails which in fact happened two times), lots of credit is taken off of homework for each attempt so you cant rely on your hw. run
this is my second review, i ran out of characters in my first. she is not sympathetic to students especially in this weird time we are in. she truly does not grasp that her class cannot be our priority every second of the day, as a biomed major thats impossible. no motivation to do well in her class because she seems to not care about us struggling
She is a super sweet person but not a good teacher. This is the most difficult course I have taken thus far, partly due to the material but mostly because of her teaching methods. I put in a lot of effort into this class and still did not do well. I recommend getting another professor if you can.
One of the sweetest people, but this class is something else... At the end of this semester 175/250 in my class have dropped. Get ready to teach yourself. A lot of the tests come from the textbook and are never taught in class. Rely heavily on outside sources for help.
Her lectures are less than helpful. She skimms over a lot of stuff expecting that you have already read the material, but what she says is even less helpful than what you can read in the book. She's a perfectly nice lady, but ita a really tough course that she doesn't really do much to help students succeed. A ton of people in my class had to drop.
Dr. Y has a great personality and is super sweet. However, I would avoid this class at all cost. Tests are so hard and make up a huge percentage of the final grade. The majority of my class withdrew. She gives no extra credit. My friends in the same class with other professors breezed by with As. Absolutely not worth the work and tanked my GPA.
Dr. Y is a hard teacher, but if youre willing to put in the work, you will do well. Read the textbook before class and do practice problems (conceptual too). Tests are hard, but your final replaces your lowest test grade. Shes a nice lady and willing to help if you go to office hours. This is a difficult class, but I feel prepared going forward!
If general chem isn't your subject, avoid this prof at all costs. Difficult to describe the amount of effort I put into this class and how little it seemed to have helped. Even my tutor was confused as to what she was doing. Tests seemed loosely related to what she taught and often had students in tears during test time. Respectfully, don't do it.
First day she was bragging about how half her students fail and its hard to get an A in her class, I can see why. The tests are extremely hard some stuff she puts on them hasnt been taught. The homework is extremely hard and takes points off if you miss anything as well. She has iclicker every day in class. I would not recommend this class.
DONT TAKE HER. Everything she could make more difficult/harder for students to do well, she does it. Only get iclicker points for getting a ? right, homework is graded on accuracy, & her tests (80% of your grade) are half short answer (she will give you 2/8 points of partial credit for doing a bunch of work and not getting the answer right).
Let me start off by saying I absolutely love this women to death. She is so kind and has an amazing personality. HOWEVER, her class is absurd. Your attendance is based on a quiz grade every day. So, you can show up every day and get a 0 for attendance if you cant answer the 2 questions that she gives per day. Never taken a test like hers. Ever.
This woman wants to watch the world burn and I'm not even kidding. I spent the whole class stressed because I was never taught the material on the test. The only thing that helped was outside sources. Also, I was told that I needed to just do better when I asked her how to improve my grade. AVOID THIS LADY AT ALL COSTS.
This class sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Literally had so many anxiety attacks and multiple days of crying because of this class. She is a very sweet woman but an awful professor. She is not good at teaching. She obviously knows what she is talking about but she does not do a very good job at explaining.
Dr. Yngard is a horrible communicator. She rushes through material, and she immediately expects you to know all of it very well. Her test material doesn't really match the material that she says will be on them. She expects you to read the textbook and understand what it says. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU CAN AVOID. HORRIBLE
I really want to like her because her personality is fine but, I am not taking a Chemistry class for fun. She is horrible at communicating the lecture in a way that us students can understand. I did not miss a single class this semester and I still struggled. If I could go back in time I would take it with another professor or online.
The only good thing about having her was that she let us replace our final with one of our exams. She is very difficult and not much help when you ask for extra time. I never missed a single class and ended with a C in the class which was my first C in my 3 semesters at auburn.
Dr. Yngard is by far the WORST professor I have ever had. I made an A in Chem 1030 and had to drop her class due to a D. She gives no guidance as to what is important in class and very briefly goes over topics. If you love yourself DO NOT TAKE HER!!!! I love challenges, but the challenge of being in her class is beyond disgraceful.
This is the only class I made a C in at auburn. She is kinda funny in class but a horrible lecturer and test giver. I have made an A in O chem 1 and 2 but could not even get a B in gen chem 2. If I could go back I would've never taken her and waited for any other professor for this course.
Dr. Yngard was a tough professor who doesn't want her students to succeed. She would give homework that would take several hours per week & exams that were extremely difficult. When the exam average was a 50, she refused to curve & blamed her students rather than her teaching. Ask questions in class? Prepare to be belittled. Avoid her at all costs.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. First week of class told us that if we all fail it is not her fault and she will just tell the department we are stupid. Horrible class and she almost thrives off her students failures. Whatever you do, do not take this class
DO NOT TAKE THIS WOMANS CLASS. unless you are a wizard at chemistry. Once you get to chapter 9 the course becomes impossible. She have never canceled class and never lets you out early. The homework is bogus because she doesnt create it and it is very time consuming so if youre taking a lot of hours, having her homework can become overwhelming.
Ok y'all Ria is such a good prof. I came into this class so scared because of Rate my Professor and she does such an awesome job. Her class is very test heavy, and uses iClickr, but her tests are very fair and the iclickrs are easy. Do not let her rating scare you.
Not the professor to take if you have never taken chemistry before. I took AP chem in high school, so I'm very familiar with the material of this class (CHEM 1040), but if you aren't it would be much more difficult. The professor is not easy to access outside of class and 80% of your grade is test-based. Definitely not the worst, but not the best.
Do not take this class with Yngard. I previously had taken AP Chem in high school and gotten an A. Decided to take this class and boy was I ready for a rollercoaster. Lectures and long and boring. Just constantly feeding you information. Even when taking notes, I barely understood anything. Basically ended up teaching myself the entire class, tough
Although her accent is pretty thick, she was extremely flexible and was willing to repeat herself if there was any confusion. She made her lectures interesting and fun. She also likes to have a personal connection with her class, making it a more comfortable environment.
Dr. Yngard is a sweet person but when it comes to teaching I don't think she is the best. I think she expects the student to already know some of this when we come to class but that is just not the case. The way she lectures sounds like more of a "review" than actual lessons. The exams are way harder than they need to be. I don't not recommend her!
Actually cares about your grade but she is a very hard teacher. Tests are extremely hard and she doesnt do many practice problems in class. Shes very difficult but very helpful if you use her office hours. Iclicker questions every class that count towards your grade.
As a professor, i wasn't impressed with her teaching style. it felt like she didn't explain concepts well, and her ppt slides were confusing to follow. she rushes through lectures, and expects you to know material before class, and gives an Iclicker grade everyday for attendance/quizzes, exams were hard. i would not take her class again.
Dr. Yngard truly knows what she is talking about but the class is extremely difficult. I was visiting her every week for office hours and taking four tutoring/SI sessions a week and still came out with an F in the class. You really have to have a good fundamental understanding of chemistry before taking her class to get an average grade.
Dr. Yngard was a pretty fair professor in terms of her teaching style: she clearly explains at the beginning of the semester her expectations for her students, and they are high. Her tests are hard, but if you have access to old tests, they really aren't that bad. Work out the homework and actually sit down and figure it out and you should be fine!
Dr. Y is funny and kind but I could not learn from her. She expects you to be able to work through new problems based on just conceptual ideas and doesn't fully explain a lot of things. I've been to every SI session and I'm still struggling. If you're already great at chem, her lectures are fun but for most people, she might be a little difficult.
This course is extremely difficult and Dr. Yngard is not ideal. I would recommend taking a different professor. The tests are very hard and she doesn't scale so buckle up. I've never worked so hard for a low C.
I was nervous before taking this class because of Dr. Yngard's low rating, but having taken the class she deserves a much better score. I started a minor that required chem 2 and it had been 3 years since I took chem 1, but I had no trouble following along. It is important to pay attention in class, take notes, and definitely do the homework.
I like her as a person, but not as a professor. Your grade is 80% on exams so you can fall behind fast. went to tutoring/office hours multiple times a week and she still told me, "it's not my fault if you fall behind so I can't do anything for you." She speeds through lectures without fully explaining how to do everything, so most of it is on you.
Simply not a good lecturer, she will expect you to already know the material when you go to class. If you want to learn chem 2 you will have to do it on your own. You have to attend every class or your iClicker grade will tank. Will leave you so unprepared for the final, she is funny tho, but I wouldnt take her. Really rushes through material.
Dr. Yngard was an average professor. Her "lectures" were just her reading off the slides and the tests always seemed harder than anything we did in class. I worked HARD and ended up with an A but just barely. Don't expect a response to your emails. She's a sweet lady just not a great teacher. I'd take a different professor for 1040.
The lectures are just read off slides. Tests and homework were unusually hard. Half of the time you do not complete the tests. I rarely made more than a 70% on the homework which was due at a strange time. Would not recommend taking.
She is a bad professor. Her tests are extremely hard and you have to put in the work for this class. You need to read the textbook chapters before every class and you need to study consistently throughout the semester. Get another professor.
Absolutely awful. She maybe goes over one example then gives you a question a million times harder on the exam. I have resorted to learning everything from the book. Even her review sessions are pointless. She was the only option I had this semester and I wish I waited. No extra credit. I made an A with minimal effort in chem 1.
bad. that is all I have to say. i went to almost every class and i still felt so lost. she barely explains things and kind of rushes through. chem is already a difficult course but i think she made it 10x worse than it needed to be. if you can get out of taking her, do it. she will replace your lowest exam grade with your final exam grade
Ria is not good. Her tests are so hard and you go into them thinking you are ready but she says sike. Reading the textbook doesn't help at all so don't recommend it. She has a lot of quizzes and homework but they don't really help you prepare for the test. Try to take someone else.
Would not recommend this professor. Course material is difficult and she does not do a good job of explaining. If you take this professor, you will mostly have to teach it to yourself. The exams are very difficult and nothing like the homework. Not a good professor.
I literally don't know why so many people hate Dr Yngard. She is funny, personable, and a good teacher. I understand her teaching style isn't everyone's favorite. I have a sneaking suspicion that most people who leave awful ratings for her just 1.don't like chem or 2.don't like that she has high expectations for us. Don't be scared of taking her!
If you want to succeed in chem, take a different professor. Your entire grade is based off of your exams and the other small portion is off of quizzes and homework which you get heavily penalized if you miss even one question. She only lectures in class, maybe going over one or two problems and expecting you to figure out the rest on your own.
She is a really sweet lady, but the majority of her lectures are math based and her tests are mainly conceptual questions which left most students lost, so I quit going to class and just read the textbook and made an A on all the tests. The book does a great job of explaining things so if you use that you should be fine.
Her lectures were very much based on math while her tests were conceptual. Her tests are so hard compared to the other chemistry classes and you will need to study your butt off to do well. She did help us out by adjusting our quiz grades to make them better at the end of the semester and the final replaces one of your lowest test grades.
Don't recommend unless you have taken AP Chem.
I love chemistry and haven't had a difficult time understanding chem before, however, Ria is not the best professor. The homeworks and quizzes are not beneficial in studying for her tests, so you have to take the time outside class to learn everything. The final is super hard so study extra hard for that.
Lectured everyday but the problems we did during lecture were nothing like the test. There are no curves on the test and she will not change your grades even if the test were graded incorrectly. I had to teach myself the material because she did not do a good job teaching it during class.
Do not take this professor unless you are very experienced in chemistry. Exams are filled with trick questions to purposefully trip you up. This is the only class I have ever taken where I have averaged a C, and then got a 98 on the final to pull me up to a B. Chem 2 is not very difficult, but Yngard will do anything to assure that It is.
Chem 2 is a hard class and it will be difficult regardless of the professor. Dr. Y reads off the slides and does decent explanations, but it's no use if you don't read or practice, which is what it's all about. I just read the textbook, did the homework, and turned out fine.
I ignored Yngard's poor ratings and I regretted it. Her lectures aren't difficult to follow, but her tests are SO much harder than they need to be. Her lectures don't prepare you for the tests at all. The homework is graded for accuracy and is also super difficult. I've always done great in chem classes, but her class was just so incredibly hard.
I have never struggled so hard in a class ever before. I attended every lecture and spent 4-6 hours everyday outside of lecture trying to teach myself the material to the point where I didn't have time to study for other classes. If you enjoy having a will to live and a decent gpa DO NOT take dr. yngard.
Very average professor. Does an ok job of explaining concepts in class but makes the tests incredibly difficult. I remember getting 8 points off on a problem because my sig figs were off by 0.001 which is insane. The only saving grace is the final exam which is easy in comparison. In short, if you haven't taken AP Chem, you're going to struggle.
Absolutely brutal class. Take her if you want to fail regardless of the effort and time you put in.
Painful.
Her lectures were okay but all of her tests are trick questions and she barely gives any partial credit. She requires you to memorize random things like the names of the people who discovered random things. Her participation grades are based on quizzes that she gives daily on content that she has barely covered. Brutal class, avoid at all cost.
Literally so hard for no reason lectures are hard to follow and confusing and tests are just ridiculously hard for no reason at all.
She is the WORST professor I have ever had. I don't even know my grade in the class because she has our grades locked and has a confusing equation that we have to use to calculate our grade. I don't understand how she doesn't realize there's something wrong with her teaching when all of her students fail her exams. Auburn needs to fire her.
Her exams are worth 80% of your grade so don't count on homework to help you. Your grade is also locked so you have no idea if you're failing the class or not. Anytime you ask a question she gives you a passive aggressive response that belittles you and makes you feel stupid. Everyone I know is dropping the class.
Never had a professor this terrible. Be prepared to teach yourself everything because you learn nothing from her even if you go to every class and pay attention. She asks questions that confuse you and are easy to make make mistakes on. Had an F in the course halfway through and decided to drop. I have to switch my major because of her.
Chemistry is hard in general, and some classmates and I agree she doesn't fully explain some topics that are prevalent on the homework. Her tests are pretty different from the homework and are worth a majority of the final grade. If you work hard and do your fair share of self-teaching, you can get an A or B, but try to avoid her.
PLEASE RETIRE!!!
just don't
Told students including myself that she didn't want A's on the tests or in the class.
Avoid at all costs - very hard. Her tests are brutal and you will study for hours and still fail the test. There is homework for every chapter that is also very hard. She does IClicker questions almost every class period that count for your attendance and then there is a multiple choice question after. Those are also hard and go towards your grade.
Ria Yngard is the most vile teacher at Auburn University. Frankly a disgrace to the chem department, I urge you dont take her class. Wait another semester for Chem 2 if you must. From daily quizzes, loosely related material to strict grading, Saturday night HW, and hard test, Ria Yngard is the worst thing to happen to auburn since Harsin. Stay away
Not worth your time. Lectures, homework, quizzes, and tests never line up. Everything is something different. Do yourself a favor and either wait for another time to take this class, or find another professor. It's not worth having a W or low grade on your transcript due to a difficult professor.
Dr. Yngard is a good lecturer, but her lectures & homework are not similar to the exams, which are a majority of your grade & unnecessarily difficult. She doesn't believe in curves, and has no sympathy if you don't understand a concept.
She lectures by reading off slideshows that are not nearly enough to prepare you for exams. It's a teach yourself kind of class. If you had a bad chem 1 prof you're screwed. Hw on pearson that takes hours and isn't heavy enough to help your grade. Requires hours upon hours of studying. Do not take if possible. Iclicker quizzes for attendance.
Do not take this class with this professor
Do NOT be afraid of taking Dr. Yngard! Dr. Yngard is a really nice lady and will help you if you TRY (ask questions). Go to class ready to pay attention to the lectures (which are often reading slides) and take advantage of practice problems. Understand why processes happen and how to find the numbers and your GOLD! I promise you will survive :)
Honestly dont take her if you have an option, she will seem nice at first but she doesnt care about your grade and doesnt even let you see your grade on canvas.
This class is super tough but Dr. Yngard makes it understandable. Quiz grades are through iClicker so if you don't go to class you're done for. She is not big and bad like everyone thinks, she is very nice when you have questions and is happy to explain something further.
DON'T take her unless you want to fail. First day of class stated she doesn't care what grade we make she still gets her paycheck at the end of the day. I went to every class, did every homework, went to SI sessions and barely passed. Exams are very hard. Asks quiz questions right after skimming material, will count against you if you get it wrong.
Literally the worst, went into the class thinking I could manage it due to a couple good reviews. NO, do not listen to those reviews! This teacher does not want students to learn, just wants to see how hard she can make you struggle. I do not see how she is still employed by auburn honestly. Just wait another semester for a different teacher.
I thought I would have been able to handle this professor more than I was able to. Do not take her if you can avoid it, I went to tutoring and SI sessions regularly and I still barely passed the class. It is just so test heavy and every practice problem, homework assignment, and test is so different. She is a nice lady but not worth the stress.
TERRIBLE! Avoid if you can. Thought ppl were exaggerating on here but she is awful. Doesn't round grades at all. Doesn't go in any depth and tests don't reflect lecture material. Confusing and really doesn't care how you do. Go to class bc quiz questions for attendance. Read the textbook and do the problems in the book. Study ACS packet for final.
AVOID IF YOU CAN. Her tests are incredibly difficult and nothing like the homework or any practice problems. The best way to study would be to find an old exam and study that. Her lectures don't teach you a whole lot so get ready to read and take notes on the textbook to teach yourself. You can't see your grade at all during the semester. AWFUL.
Dr. Yngard's class is not easy. Attendance is not required, but you will miss out on iClicker quizzes and possible points if you skip frequently. Tests are extremely important. She replaces one exam with the final grade. It's definitely possible to succeed but prepare to work hard for it.
Would give a 0 if I could. Hands down the worst professor at Auburn University. Her exams are nothing like her lectures, which are essentially the entirety of your grade. She refuses to work out problems and makes you feel ignorant if you ask her to. If you are a straight A student like me and value your GPA, DO NOT TAKE HER.
Professor Yngard assigned several homework assignments before every test however, she would ensure that anyone who attended her lectures was amply prepared to answer said questions. Her tests were a mix of multiple-choice and free-response, and she aimed to give as much credit as she could. She prepared me well for the final exam.
Dr. Yngard's class is no easy feat, but engaging with her teaching style can pay off. The lectures are crucial, so attend regularly and take notes. Leverage resources like unstuckstudy AI alongside the textbook to prepare for the challenging exams.
Made an A in every chemistry course at Auburn except this one. You will experience a very superficial lecture and then have in-depth exams. Almost nothing on the standardized final is taught in this class. I would say it is pointless to attend class, but attendance is basically mandatory. Try your best to avoid this class.
