Great Teacher. He so smart, answers all questions asked in class. Homework is tough, but exams arent that bad. He is very fair.
Professor Alarcon is a brilliant lecturer! He has ways of presenting material so that the class understands, and he'll answer any question you throw at him no matter how off-topic.. He chooses his words carefully and speaks in ways that promote independent thought. Excellent professor.
Interesting, fair teacher, and just a nice guy in general (rare in ASU sciences). Tests are reasonably difficult, but graded fairly. Quizzes are easy, and the TA goes over the solutions so you're always well prepared for tests. Only bad thing is online homework. Only the final answer is graded, so a page of correct calcs with one error is a zero.
Taught class like a 300 level. Thick accent, and wasted class time. Tough quizzes, and tests. Mostly conceptual even though all homework is problem based. TA Raman sucks, and grades unfairly. Alarcon is a fair grader if you point out Ramans mistakes. Take this class with someone else if you actually want to learn physics instead of riddles.
Cool Professor. I enjoyed his class. He has a bit of an accent when he speaks, but it doesn't really make it hard to understand him. Instead it just adds a little to his personality. He was always willing to stop and explain concepts during lectures. His tests are usually easier than the homework. Overall a good guy and a good professor.
Descent Prof. He keeps you engaged at lecture. His HW is pretty difficult and the tests are mostly conceptual. Hard to stop when lecturing but really helpful during office hours.
His enthusiasm for physics combined with his accent make him hilarious. Homework is all calculations and they most are difficult. Tests are mostly conceptual with and not as difficult as the homeworks. I don't think any professor can make physics enjoyable but alarcon tries hard
Professor Alarcon is one of the best physics teachers at ASU. He holds a help-study session every week to ask questions and get help on the homework. His tests are multiple choice and free response. He assigns weekly online homework that isn't too difficult. He is really interested in physic and definitely shows it!
He seems like a really good guy, and probably is really smart. But they made him teach a general level physics class and he cannot explain basic things for the life of him. The class is passable, but in general he is one of the worst teachers I have ever had.
He is enthusiastic and knows his stuff, but does a bad job of teaching it. The weekly homework is very difficult; he makes things more complicated than they have to be. His tests are mostly conceptual; you MUST understand whats going on to do well, not just memorize. Was rude when he replied to my emails expressing concern. Class avg very low.
He has an interesting accent and is incredibly enthusiastic! He has issues teaching what he knows. The weekly homework is ridiculously difficult while the tests are mainly conceptual.
He does tend to obscure the point with his thick accent and pages of projected scribbles. The weekly assignments are very easy and rarely require more than plugging numbers into formulas or maybe substituting one equation into another.
He is funny and his accent makes him hilarious. His tests are a little tricky but not too hard. HW is a little tough but look for all formulas and plug them in. Overall not a hard class if you study for it
Alarcon does a decent job teaching the material, and he's a pretty funny guy too. I don't think anyone can make physics fully understandable. But his tests are so easy and the curve is so steep that you can get by not really knowing the stuff. Just make sure you go to recitation for homework help and get the rest of the hw solutions from him onlin
He knows physics but has NO IDEA how to teach. None at all. I wouldn't recommend him but I hear all of ASU's physics department is terrible. Good luck. :/
The professor was knowledgeable but he's not good at teaching. He's funny and entertaining at times but the exams do not reflect what he teaches. The exams are so much harder.I had to self-teach myself for the most part by reading the book, but even that wasnt too helpful.Homework was really hard!He curves though and I was able to get by with a B.
This teacher can be hard to understand due to his accent, but he's not too bad (especially in comparison to the other physics teachers). The online format is useful for replaying videos, and the teachers/TAs are usually responsive to questions. Tests aren't bad because they're open book
Online, 4 tests, get to drop one and a cumulative final. Exam 2 and 3 are the most difficult. Use your TA to get questions answered. Joel is a great and helpful TA. Lots of tries on the hmwk, those boost your grade.
The class was difficult, especially the section on magnetism. However, the course was interesting and applicable to an electrical engineering major like myself by integrating the physics behind components and their use in basic circuits.
ONLINE. Compared to other Physics professors at ASU, this man is awesome. Accent is manageable, he has office hours every week that coincide with HW. Tests are very difficult mainly die to the fact questions are all or nothing. No partial credit(online duh). Tests are multiple choice. IT could be worse with others, recommended.
Very great at making video lectures.
the fact that its online made it much more hard (i think). Self pace (dangerous because i got behind) and the tutorials help but they make a lot of mistakes which results in hours of pain. Do not buy the book! the online material and sample problems are enough. the word problems are insanely hard (conceptual physics always is)got an A- though
He's pretty decent with his online lectures and also has extra videos that help with homework problems. Recitations are mainly for help with homework as well, which can be nice. It's physics 131 though, so don't expect it to be easy at all. Exam review tests (not graded, answers/work supplied) are very helpful.
Not a good teacher. The concepts are pretty hard to grasp to begin with. Then his online lectures are done through this horrible program called vimeo that screws up all the time. Half of them don't even show up on certain browsers. Thick accent. Tests are conceptual, homework is problem based. You're going to be teaching yourself if you take him.
Pretty easy, he doesn't like to curve. Tests are conceptual, so you have to know the material to do well. I would recommend this guy if you just want to get through it
Online video lectures were nice to re-watch for clarity. HW is worth 30%. Tests worth 45%. Final 25%. you must know your material very well to get high grades on the online exams. the average exam grades were around a 60%, so dont expect to get a good grade.
Dr. Alarcon is awesome. No surprise he became a President's Professor. I took him online. Tests were in testing center. Videos are clear, he has online test review and plenty of sample tests. No reason you can't get an A.
Great professor! Video lectures were very clear and helpful. Tests were difficult, but the lowest score is dropped. The class average was pretty low, but he curved like crazy at the end. You should have no problem passing if you do the homework and put some amount of effort into the course.
HORRIBLE teacher but the online class was set up well. Online lectures were nice for review but he is hard to understand and simple does a horrible job explaining. I emailed him four times during this course and he only responded to one of them, so don't expect any outside help from him. The class was curved like crazy for the B and C students.
Great Professor! The online course is set up in a way that makes it easy for the student to pass. Assigns an exercise and hw assignment each week but has online videos posted that help with the hw. May be a little hard to understand sometimes, but he does a good job explaining the subject.
Ricardo is a decent teacher. He moved through the material in the video lectures so slowly that I elected to read the textbook instead. Homework was able to be done in an hour or two a week. Tests were reasonable and similar to the practice tests. Recitations were unhelpful-even though they were "required" I didn't attend and still got an A+.
The PHY131 iCourse is wack. How I got a C+ I have no idea. The test averages were terrible, the reviews were nothing like the exams, and the lectures were vague. The class is PRE-CURVED so that a D is a C... Let that be a warning to how poorly this class is taught. This was an important class for my major (EE) and unfortunately I learned nothing.
This class is full of cheaters. Students cheated on every single exam and Alarcon didn't care. Honestly, I'm starting to think thats the only way someone can get an A in his class. The exams are hard and his lectures or reviews don't really help. Take another professor, trust me. This class was horrible. I don't really know why he's teaching it.
The best class ever , everything was clear , easy and obvious to learn. Even that the instructor is so helpful and ready to answer any questions that you may get confuse on. the tests were based on the lectures and the notes that were posted in the blackboard. You have to keep in top of every single assignment and you will be fine
do. not. take. this. class. Physics is had enough as it is, but when taught online its even worse. I did all of the mastering assignments and kept on top of the lectures and received 40s on my unit tests! The tests are very conceptual and are all mulitple choice, which can be good or bad, but its hit or miss. The class is precurved so a D is a C.
His online setup is ok. homework is helpful, and his lectures are pretty clear. I had a problem with his exams. They are done in a supervised room. the issue I ran into was I would submit an answer, and realize I messed up some simple math and could not change it. you cant fix mistakes you know are there! He grades on a heavy curve thank goodness.
Lectures, practice tests, and Mastering Physics, the three things you have to get through in this class, don't prepare you for the tests at all. Tests are based off of a multiple choice test bank on BB, so cheaters completely ruined the curve for the rest of us. Curve was 5%, so 86% was an A-, but missing one question drops your test grade by 8%.
When I took phy 121 I was like, man this is thought , I was always lost during lecture and it got really boring but I still manage to pass the class. When I picked phy 131, I thought it was a great idea to take it online because than I can go back and watch the lectures again if I was ever lost. I did that for the first two lectures and that was it
Tests and the final count for 60% of your overall grade. They are usually 12 to 15 questions multiple choice. My biggest complaint is that the homework and practice tests do not adequately prepare you for the exam. Despite 60% being a C grade for the class, it's still hard to achieve a passing grade.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. I put in 15+ hours a week preparing. Understood every homework problem and example. Did homework and practice tests 3x over. Got a 37 test average. The tests are NOTHING like the homework. I only recommend if you want to fail and cry a lot. My only advice is that he should stop teaching.
Take this class if you're just looking to pass physics. It's really hard to get anything above C (unless you know what you're doing) but the curve is generous so it's easy to pass the class. Exams are very difficult and lecture videos are just there to explain equations and basic theories so rest are up for you to learn
This professor cares about teaching the material thoroughly, but focuses too much on superfluous topics. The homework was very difficult and, combined with the lab class, made for a crazy-tough semester. The tests were hard and many people failed. He said he will curve end-of-the-semester grades.
His lectures and the homework are not related to the exams in any significant way. I have never taken a class of such a poor quality. The exams are taken from a random collection of questions in an online database, and many students cheat. He is lazy in teaching and does not respond to emails.
This is a physics course, it will be tough. You must be willing to learn and not just skate by. Actually do the homework and you can easily work the tests. The tests are difficult, but not too difficult. If you just sit and google all your homework- you will not do well. This is college, put in the effort.
His online lectures woefully under prepare you for the tests and the tests are very different from the homework and make little sense. Most test questions could have been written by a blind caveman who doesn't know what a keyboard is. They make little sense and are way harder than the homework problems.
Take this class at your own risk. His lectures aren't clear, his exams are nothing like any homework or practice tests. Basically, if you don't know anything about physics 2 already, you're screwed. There is an absurd amount of cheating that goes on, and there is nothing done about it.
Do yourself a favor and DONT TAKE HIS CLASS. Tests are not even closely related to Homework, Practice Tests. Talking about Lecture videos, he likes to derive formulas for no apparent reason even though we get a formula sheet. 12 Questions each Test. If u get 1 MCQ wrong, 8% drops. No respond on emails or Piazza. Worst class I ever took in Mech Eng.
12 problems in 1 hour tests on concepts not taught. Compensating lower grading scale. Serious learning gaps impact students future job prospects. Professor rarely posts on Piazza. TA gives condescending, sarcastic, demeaning, late, short, unresponsive Piazza replies. Unfortunately he is the only professor for Physics 131, wait for new teacher!
It's a tough subject and compressed into an 8 week course, so it's going to be a lot of work no matter what. I watched the lecture videos, which were a pleasure to watch honestly - he's a good lecturer, but every time I went from the lecture video to try to complete the associated homework I felt unequipped. TA was useless. You'll work for it.
Tests are randomized from a question bank. You take them in a room with other students, sometimes there is cheaters using their phones. Homework and test reviews do not help with tests since they are randomized. Lectures are abstract and extremely few examples are covered. Honestly worst class I've taken. Professor knows his stuff but bad delivery.
Took modern physics online. Prof. Alarcon never responded to any of my emails throughout the semester. Test questions were completely unlike the homework and the average grade on exams was very low (tests were heavy conceptual, HW heavy formulas). HW solutions often incorrect (used classical physics to solve quantum problems).
His enthusiasm for physics was apparent. The material was hard, but he made it easier to learn than my last professor. I didn't have to contact him because the class was put together well. He answered questions on the class forum quickly.
Professor Alcaron lives in his own world where every concept is solved in his head but never communicated to his students. Id sign up for any other professor at all costs.
This class was one of the hardest I've ever taken. I barely passed, and I did all of the readings, watched all of the lectures, and studied for every single exam. It's not helpful this course is only a half semester long for online students. Prof Alarcon has been a very reasonable professor the entire semester, it's just a very difficult course.
I tried watching the lectures but found Prof Alarcon difficult to listen to. He jumped around a lot and made the material more confusing in the end. I did all of the homework and worked hard to be sure I understood how to solve the homework problems. Even with this much effort, I still tanked one of the midterms and got only a C on the final.
Professor Alarcon teaches in his own way that is incredibly hard to understand. He is lenient with class grading but in order to learn the material, you must do the HW THOROUGHLY to understand course material and do well on your exams. I had to teach myself the material in order to get through this class.
Professor Alarcon, although is very passionate about the subject, is just not a great lecturer. They are very bland, confusing, and fast. When he shows examples, he will derive formulas out of nowhere and not explain why (skip steps). Tests don't relate to lectures very well and the practice test and formula sheets are also very unhelpful.
It didn't take long to get used to his accent, but I never got used to his style of teaching. He seems to prioritize deriving equations above making sure his students understand what he's talking about, making most of his lectures incomprehensible. Because of this, homework is nearly impossible and tests are a nightmare. Good luck, you'll need it
I would not recommend this professor to anyone. His lectures are very confusing and he is not understanding of the students needs. He spends more time deriving formulas for no reason than explaining how or why he has values on the screen. Halfway through the semester, I stopped attending lectures and just focused on the hw and ended up doing better
Alarcon seems like a sweet guy but the instructor blindspot is huge. He doesn't seem to understand how little most of the class knows and therefore doesn't explain clearly. Mastering Phy hw is hard and I never came to understand his teaching style. No mandatory iclicker tho, all hw is due at the end of semester, and lecture videos on canvas.
Without a doubt the worst professor that I have ever had. His lectures are impossible to understand and his tests are nothing like any of the examples that he gives. I highly recommend not taking this professor for PHY 131 if possible.
His lecture is hard to follow because he loves deriving equations instead of showing how to apply them in situations. I had to teach myself the class by reading the textbook and looking the hw answers online when it was impossible to do. The final had a formula sheet but 20% of the questions didn't even have the formulas I needed.
His lectures were very difficult to follow both because he spent too much time deriving equations and because it was incredibly boring. Definitely the most difficult class I have taken, doesn't explain applications of formulas, and I spent so much time teaching myself. Only upside was that all homework was not due until the end f the semester.
Professor Alarcon seems like a very nice person at heart, but I don't love his teaching style. If you only attend his lectures you'll probably land a 50% on the test, which was the average for all 3 midterms, 48 average for the final. The class has an extremely generous curve at the end though, an 81 was an A, 65 was a B.
Professor Alarcon definitely seems nice, but this class was not taught well. I know people who have taken this physics class in the past, did well, and still struggled in this class. I personally only got my grade because of a significant curvemy grade before the curve was a 70. Dont rely on a curve, dont take this professor if you dont have to
Long and boring lectures that were hard to pay attention to- even when I did manage to follow along I still was left confused and unprepared for the homework which is about 10x harder than any examples he does in class. He does examples but doesn't explain the process or the concepts used pretty much at all- tests were also unlike the reviews.
This professor does not make much effort to ensure the class knows what he is talking about. He assumes you have knowledge that you might not, skips lots of steps in problems, and gives unclear explanations. Has good energy and passion.
This class was one of the hardest I've taken. The professor is helpful if you ask for help. This class shouldn't be half a semester long though, it is way too much work for that. Be prepared to spend the majority of your time reading and practicing hw problems to be able to understand what's going on.
Do not take Dr. Alarcon for PHY 131! He is the hardest professor I have ever had. The first test had an average of 40% as his lectures did not cover anything on the exam. I highly recommend taking physics online or with a different professor! You will not learn with Alarcon and it is extremely difficult to get a decent grade.
I thought this professor did a great job! The lectures are clear and a good compliment to the book. The class is very test heavy. Overall I learned a ton and would recommend it! Put the work in and you will do well.
The lectures were painfully long and I got nothing out of them. I started doing better on assignments after not going to class anymore and figuring out the material myself. The professor seemed clueless as to how much the class was struggling. Every test average was around 50%, along with the final.
Considering that the average exam score was around 45%, he weighs the exams in a way where it does not do too much damage to your grade. Homework is worth almost half of your grade which is really nice so make sure you do all of it. He drops the lowest quiz and homework scores. Lecture can be boring, but he is a nice guy and genuinely cares.
Unless you already are familiar with physics or took the class before, you might be okay with him but for most of the class we struggle. The tests were difficult and not like the homework (avg. 50). The professor is intelligent, but I can't understand him. The curve at the end was generous and homework wasn't due till the end.
He's a nice professor, but I don't feel that he covered enough content in class for full understanding. You'll have to teach yourself. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he had to sub in for another professor that already left us behind. Gave a generous curve at the end of the semester.
I am a Mechanical Engineer that took this class as a Technical Elective. Here are my recommendations - Make your notes online on google sheets or one note, typed notes with the given equations sheet - HW is more difficult than the Exams - Exams are very conceptual so understanding the material is crucial - Each lecture video is about 10-30 min
Seems like a good guy who is so knowledgeable about physics that he can't imagine what its like to be new to the subject. Lectures are an audio version of the textbook. There are no solved sample problem videos or TA sessions, so it's literally just you and the book. Major curve bc most people bomb.
I don't know why all the comments are bad for this professor, but he made physics 2 make you go "ah I see" in a good way. I liked that he focused more on the concept instead of the equations. Also its an online class...read, and do the problems, go back to his videos even if its boring for some. Cool guy, fun class, makes you want to learn more.
Would not recommend anyone take his course. Homework and other learning materials given do not reflect difficulty of material on the exams. Lectures are worthless.
Dr. Alarcon was a very respectable individual and had some great lectures. It is tough dual-hatting the lab and main course if you are working full-time, but I was able to do it. The material itself is pretty interesting and Alarcon does a pretty good job of trying to clarify the concepts.
Copy down your tests into notes before the answers go away. Test questions and variants of them appear on the final. This class is test-heavy, prepare with lots of conceptual questions that aren't necessarily covered in the homework.
This professor gets a really bad rep, but he has either changed or people just get bad grades with him as his classes are difficult and then grade him poorly. I have had over 10 online classes at ASU and he has been the most responsive and carrying so far. He is brilliant, explain things well and the way he talks makes the lectures very enjoyable.
Tough tests with trick questions, wrong questions, and/or poor English questions that you have to interpret a certain way and can have multiple correct answers based on how you interpret the poor English questions, all of which make it impossible to get any good grades. There are 3 tests and a final. All multiple choice questions. Lots of homework
Lectures/homework were very hard to understand and did not go over much content needed for exams, which make or break your grade in this course. I only did "well" since I've had experience taking Physics classes, but would not recommend this class, especially if taking for an elective.
The questions are obviously wrong. Even more, they are all multiple choices so there is no partial credits. In one of the questions, two objects A,B were moving in speed of light, opposite side to each other. It was asking what is the speed of B in the reference frame of A. The answer was 2c.... Catastrophic class.
Clear and generous grading criteria, no late penalties on homework assignments as long as they are all completed by end of the term. Tests are a bit frustrating because they don't have a lot of questions and are designed to not require grading (multiple choice only), but it's possible to completely bomb one and still do very well in the course.
He is equation heavy, skips the important bits in his lectures and acts like everyone in his class got an A+ in all calculus classes. Does not do a good job of explaining what equations relate to the theories. On top of all this, his tests are extremely hard, and nothing like the homework. Ended up teaching myself. DO NOT TAKE.
Very difficult class, especially considering it was online. He relied very heavily on his TA (who happened to be good) to help the class through. Being able to miss a maximum of 3 test questions for the entire class to get an A+ is just a razor thin, unrealistic margin for error. His lectures also could've been better and clearer.
Exams are hard MCQs and there is no partial credit. STUDY THE MIDTERMS FOR THE FINAL! Prof found out students were cheating halfway through the semester + basically just sent out a message saying "don't do that". Beware sending messages to him because he will only respond to the first sentence. Small curve at the end of the semester.
Dr. Alarcon is an enthusiastic lecturer and the grading criteria for the course are fairly generous. Tests are tough, sometimes due to wording of questions rather than the material itself, and there were a few issues with questions that were set up wrong but that was addressed when raised. He is fairly responsive and a great guy, good TA as well.
