I haven't finished the class yet, but so far I have a D. I was hoping other people would have rated him, but they haven't, so I added him hoping others that have had him will offer words of advice.
Carretero is VERY self-absorbed. He thinks he's God's gift to the world and will call you an idiot if you don't get what he's talking about. His lectures are fast paced and the test material is WAY hard and doesn't reflect homeworks or lectures.
Impossible tests & HW, pompous, thinks we know material already, always promoting own (boring) research; the rest of the time lectures come from book, SPEEDS through class, may need to buy a new wrist after this semester, a PhD doesn't mean a good teacher
Carretero is smart, but not a great teacher. He speeds through lectures and everything comes right from the (very terrible) book. He really gets off on seeing his students suffer by giving us difficult assignments and impossible tests.
His lectures are too fast, too long (always plan on starting early & ending late), and he assumes that you know as much about the material as he does. Tests are eccrutiatingly difficult.
He literally tries to cram 2 semesters into one; we've already done a decent amount of subject matter from Math 342B. Posts on the website that final won't be cumulative and changes mind a week before final. Thinks we know everything (because he does)
hard teacher, but very fair. expect to work in his class, but you will learn a lot if you do what is expected of you. if you want an easy A then go elsewhere, but if you want to truly learn and understand the material, carretero is a good teacher .
Very hard teacher. He is helpful out in office hours. Expects that you have already taken classes that are not prereqs. Has a funny accent.
Although Ricardo is attempting to give us a break, by adding an extra mid-term, he continues his fast paced lectures that are word for word from the (@@@@)book. I wish he would do sample problems instead a derriving the formulas as printed in the book.
Very hard teacher, Very hard teacher, Very hard teacher. You will cover 4 years worth of material in 2 semesters... He will expect that you can apply what you learn to "new" applications. NOT EASY!!! But he is fair and is getting to be a bette
good teacher, you will have to learn. he is very fair adn open to all suggestions. has a funny accent but it is not that bad. keeps you entertained through the class. very helpful.
Great teacher. Very good at answering questions, and giving examples where students in the physical sciences will use the material. This is a great class and he makes it very interesting when with excellent computor simulations.
horrible teacher...expects you to know everything and cant teach at all cause he copies striaght from the book...anyone can be teaching this course....hw and tests dont relate to anything lectures......
ATTN: He rated himself! the comment posted on 2/19/04 was his own comment about himself.
If you are like me, and had a choice between 342A/342B and some other class, take the other class or suffer the wrath! The class moves very fast, and the book is the WORST I have ever used. He’s a tough prof, but it’s mainly the curriculum in the class.
You will have to learn and do your work if not youll fall back. I got an A in his class (I like math a lot and i did it in high school in india). If you will be needing math in your major you better take this class cal III gonna be harder.GET THE BASICS
Ricardo is the chillest teacher out there. He has a thick costa rican accent, talks alot about chorizos and sometimes weird mexican things, but he is funny as hell, talks a mile a minute so its hard to keep up with his words but its easy to understand his notes, i reccomend mucho
this guy really sucks, he cant teach , and his test are really hard. He works you really hard and at the end just to get a low grade, stay away from these guy. He cant teach he goes word by word from the book, not helpful at all.
Does not make the class interesting, and is very hard to follow along.
Got a bit of a Mexican accent, explained things pretty well. talks very quickly, but its good becuase he covers a variety of examples. If you can, get a TI-86 to help figure out the hw. if you can get 80% of the hw, you will have an A.
Good professor. Fair, animated, helpful one on one. Has slight Mexican accent, but understandable. Uses online homework system, Webworks, gives 5 chances to get answer. Homework worth 25% of grade. Tests are less difficult than homework. Calc II is a very hard class. You cant bull your way through.
TAKE HIM if you can. He is not easy at all, but knows his stuff and will explain it to you even if he does make you feel dumb.
I though he was an excellent teach for calculus II. This was my second time taking the class, and I actually understood the material when he taught it. It's a hard class even with a great teacher, so don't expect it to be easy. He does talk very fast and has some funny moments though.

This class can be difficult if you've never taken pre-calc, otherwise it's really not that bad. Carretero is a way beter teacher than Chavez-Ross, if you have to choose between the two. I had her for lab and she is no help.
He's a chill teacher. The overall grading of the class is very confusing, but from what I have heard he's better than Chavez-Ross. He talks fast but answers any questions you may have. You're allowed calculators and an index card for the tests which help a lot.
he talks really fast so sometimes you can't understand him very well. he gives as many examples as he can. there were three midterms and a final. all homework is done online, and you get a week to do it. there are pop quizzes in the class where the T.A. teaches. curves all of the grades at the end of the semester. he drops the lowest hmwk and quiz
Talks fast and does work fast so sometimes confusing. All homework is done online which is difficult to enter in but you have a week to do it (don't wait until last minute).
Has good intentions and can be very funny, but do not fall behind lest you never recover. Midterms are difficult, but if you can do all homework then you will pass the midterms. Group finals at SDSU are a joke.
Speaks extremely fast and can be confusing at times. Teaches labs fairly well, and he's open to questions about tests. He goes over practice tests a week before a test, and it helps a lot. The grading for the class is confusing, because everyone seems to be failing, but they say the tests are curved. Index card and calc on tests allowed.
He is very energetic and makes learning math fun, he is much easier to learn from than Ross, and is more available.
I TOOK HIM MY FRESHMAN YEAR AND HE WAS PRETTY GOOD. I MISSED A LOT OF THE CLASSES AND JUST READ THE BOOK WHEN I COULD AND I STILL GOT AN A. HE DOES HIS HOMEWORK OVER THE INTERNET SO YOU ONLY GET SO MANY TRIES BEFORE IT DOESN'T LET YOU ANSWER THEM ANYMORE. BUT I LIKE IT. I AM A MATH MAJOR BUT THE OTHER PHYSICS MAJORS THOUGHT IT WAS EASIER THAN I DID
ONLY TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU KNOW CALC
He's a really smart guy, but this is class was exceedingly difficult for me. He moves at an extremely fast pase and doesn't cut any breaks. That siad, he's pretty fair and concerned about his students. Make sure you try really hard to undersand everything taught in 150 before moving on to this class or you'll be lost.
This guy has the most abstract and rediculous tests.I've got a 100 on all the homeworks, and... it doesn't help when it comes to test time. None of the problems have actual numbers they are all proofs for abstract variables with an extra wrench thrown into them. He's very rude in the office hours and he makes you repeat a question several times.
If two thirds of the class fails, i think its safe to say that YOU SHOULD DEFINETLY NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER.midterms are impossible, homework just as hard. doesnt focus on basic conepts of calc 2.NO CURVE
I liked this professor because he taught us that calculus is more than just number crunching(study concept problems for tests!). I got an A in his class (it was my first time taking it) because i would read the book and go to the tutoring room. If you can do the online homework then his tests should not be that difficult. The group final is cake!!!
I enjoyed and understood his lectures, and I expect to pass. But, I thought his tests and homework were all unrelated. To give you a sense of what I mean, imagine if you were taking an algebra class where you were assigned 20 solve for x problems, where you subtracted or added a constant. Then, for the test, it was all division and multiplication.
FOR THE LOVE OF GODDDDDDDDDD DONT TAKE HIM, he cant speack english, which makes it hard to understant him. He does not curve, LETS JUST SAY 2/3 of my class failed.
Guy is a genius and really knows the material, can't doubt that... however he is the worst teacher i have ever had in my life, speaks way too fast, doesn't believe in study guides, test are brutal, Hw is tough because its done online. Avoid if possible! i passed barely with a C, while 2/3 of my class failed. "Dumbest smart person i know"
Very funny professor. Just make sure undesrtand the HW (webwork), and go to the lectures. He throws alot of curve balls in the tests.
Carretero knows his stuff. He also expects his students to be very proactive in their studies. If you work hard, then you will learn a lot from him. If math isn't your thing, then you will have to work even harder. If you do not work hard, no matter what, you will probably dislike him as a professor, get frustrated, and write bad reviews.
The guy is a genius, but the problem is he expects everyone else to be too. He specifically said he would make his final harder because previous Calc 1 finals were too easy... then 2/3 of the class failed. If you know your math, take him, he was very knowledgeable on his subject. Otherwise, stay away.
He's bright. However, he has an accent which wouldn?t be bad but speaks too fast, and wants to get through the material as quick as possible. Homework is mandatory and on his website. If you don't get the right answer you are marked wrong with no help in figuring out what was you were doing wrong. 2 Midterms, 1 HARD final.PLEASE AVOID BY ALL MEANS!
Just to start, I hated this teacher. Couldn't understand him through the thick accent. Had heart for the class but didn't help at all. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Here's the deal: I took Calc 1 from this guy in Fall 2010. If it weren't for him there is no way I could have made A's in Calc 2 and 3. He was tough, but don't you think you should have to work for an education?
only rating cuz i see he has a lot of bad ratings, which he doesnt deserve. hes a good teacher. knows his stuff and knows how to teach it. the TA sucked, but the prof was awesome n helpful. id recommend him, but ive had better professors. curved a lot.
A wonderful prof. if you are willing to put in the time to learn. If you study, you will do well, but understand the material. I was lucky because his tests were easy this semester, but I could sort of understand if other people had difficulty problems. Do the homework and understand the subject matter, and you will get a fair grade. Honestly.
STAY AWAY..talks super fast and the tests are impossible. I got at least a B on all the HW and failed all his tests. 60% of the class failed!!! Basically expects you to have passed calc 1 with an A to even have a chance in his class
this semester 50% of the classes failed. I was lucky enough to get a c+ its not that he doesnt teach good. his tests are tough, and his curve is very small. If you are going to take him, put in the work, or you will die
Stay away! I like math, but having this class was so stressful. Before the final, I didn't know what my grade was because he did not grade all the homework assignments, he only graded about half, so I couldn't use the homework to study. He is hard to keep up with during his lectures. It's sad to say that the textbook is a better teacher.
LOVED IT, seriously he is a great and fair professor he will ask a lot of you but that is because he expects you to understand the material. If you can't grasp Math well try getting a professor that just passes most who should fail as you will get what you earn in his class and will definitely be prepared for follow on classes!!!
Hard teacher, don't expect good grades if you're not willing to work a lot each week. HW takes 3 to 5 hours per week. But the guy is smart, friendly and passionate. You will learn (a lot) the hard way.
Knows his stuff, and expects you to learn it. Prepares you for tests, reading the book will be extremely helpful as that's where he gets all of his examples. Homework is online and not too bad, tests are very similar. With slightly above minimal effort and a good math intuition, this class isn't that bad.
Really hard class. I was not required to take this class but, Carretero is the best math teacher I have had at state by far.
He is a tough professor but his tests are based on the homework so his tests are fair. Note: if the averages from the second or first midterm are considerably low, then he will give you a third test based only on differential equations (which are not that hard). Also most stuff on the final will be based on the homework and differential equations.
Class was insanely difficult (obviously, it is calculus). Teacher was not very good. It's hard to teach calculus well, so he might be alright but not gonna help you understand the hard topics.
Carretero is a great professor, he is extremely considerate and a pretty funny guy. He teaches pretty well and his lectures are enjoyable, his office hours help a lot and although Math151 is a difficult subject he get's you through it with a pretty good understanding. He relates concepts to real life and you can tell he wants you to succeed.
This class was insanely difficult and i got an A in Calc 1. The tests are extremely difficult and nothing like the HW. Dont take this professor he rushes through everything and grading is never uptodate. The last mid term had an average of a 42 lets just say that
I struggled a lot in this class. Was not ready. About failed all the exams and got out with a C . He isnt up to date on blackboard so was worried all the time about my grade. He is insanely smart and I think he had trouble trying to dumb things down. Dont wait to long to ask ?'s because you will get lost. He talks extremely fast and has accent.
Anyone who complains about him is lazy because he literally tries his best to make you understand through lectures, homework, and office hours. In my opinion, that's minimal effort, what you should already be doing anyway. All the other professors had lower averages, Carretero's was always the highest. Go to class, do hw and you're good.
He really knows his math and it's clear he cares about making students succeed but I had a hard time with his class because he expected students to be more successful, tests were tough and had low curves, and he went too fast with lectures. His class requires lots of studying.
The homework, tests, and in class problems are written by different people and online programs. It's impossible to be truly prepared for what to expect.
Prof. Carretero is a very enthusiastic professor who explains the content pretty well. He does however go over the content at an extremely fast pace, so do not get behind! He gives a lot of hints on what to study for the exams(he writes the exams), which helped tremendously.
Carretero is very enthusiastic and extremely intelligent. However he should not be a professor. He has a thick accent, goes at a very fast pace, goes on frequent tangents, and often uses incorrect grammar, making it difficult to understand his teaching. You should only take Carretero if you are capable of teaching yourself all of the material.
I understood his Spanish accent perfectly. He's a crazy calc prof who does indeed talk fast, but I enjoy profs like that for they keep my attention. He writes the tests for every calc 2 teacher's classes. Very nice to talk & ask questions to during office hours. Quizzes do range from easy to difficult.
Carretero is a unique yet enthusiastic character. He has a slight accent but teaches relatively well. You need to study and go to the lectures in order to get a good grade. There is one homework assignment due once a week. MESA made me take a workshop class that was very helpful. I would recommend looking into the MESA program for extra help.
One of my biggest mistakes in my life was taking this class with Carretero. He is the head of the Calc department at SDSU, but nothing he says in lecture makes sense to anyone.
Calc teachers at state are awful but I actually learned the subject w/Carretero. I simply went to class and did the hw (& i don't mean copy, actually did it). Very helpful at office hours if you're still stuck. Exam material is nothing you haven't seen before and if you keep up, you won't need to study/cram so much. Did well beyond test averages :)
Carretero's the best there is. Yes he has a slight accent/speaks quickly, but he's very enthusiastic and loves what he does. He's a genius. He writes the exams for all MATH 151 classes and there's nothing you haven't seen before on them. Review practice problems/homework and you should be set. Lectures optional, strongly recommended.
You could obviously tell that he loved his work and is amazing at teaching it! As long as you do the homework you should be fine.
He's a good professor if you're willing to learn Calculus. I'm a laid back type of person myself but you have to put in work or you're going to fail. Quizzes, weekly WebAssign homework, 3 midterms and a final.
He is an amazing Prof, he makes the material seem so easy :) Attendence is Mandatory due to the iclicker which isnt a bad thing since you learn so much from the lectures. His Quizzes are set up so that as long as you answer the questions youll get an A on them( you dont even have to get the right answer). Overall solid CALC 2 proffesor
Calculus II is not tremendously easy, but Prof C goes out of his way to be super enthusiastic about it. He is a great teacher and explains concepts in easy to understand ways. He constantly finds ways to bring humor into the classroom, so you are in an awesome environment. Definitely recommend.
Out of all the Calc 2 Professors this has to be the best one to choose. Just want to let you know that this class is HARD. You really have to put in the work to pass this class and also get some friends to study with, it really helps!!! His notes are super confusing so I would just teach myself the material. 3 midterms 1 final. Lots of curves!!
Calc 2 is the hardest of all 3 but he writes the tests so you have a leg up on others and unless you want an 8am with Manchester (also really good), take this guy. Speaks pretty fast with a sorta thick spanish accent but the dude is fun and you won't fall asleep in front; do and you get called out. You really gotta do extra problems to study best
Carretero is very passionate about teaching and is very energetic. Quizzes will come as a surprise in lecture so be ready for them. The class is very challenging, if you don't put in a ton of effort, you won't pass. Be very selective of your TA's, they will make or break you. Hardest class at SDSU so far. Grading is unclear and only updated twice.
Carretero is very passionate about the topic. Honestly, Calc II is not the easiest class, but Carretero made it the highlight of my semester. Out of all the Calc II professors, take him! I received a B- in Calc I and I thought I was set up for failure. Just make sure you keep up with the material and do all of the homework. Study groups also help.
I don't know why carretero has such a low rating. He is a great teacher and is super passionate about math. He is very energetic so it's easier to stay engaged in what he is teaching during lecture. I wish he taught calc 3.
Carretero is the best professor for Calc 2. This is a difficult class that many people fail, but Carretero manages to explain difficult concepts in the minimal amount time he has. Also for this class asking questions during small section is very important. If you don't understand a previous concept you can quickly fall behind.
Professor C is an amazing professor! He really cares about his students. Sometimes he does go a little fast since 50 minutes is a bit short to teach a complex concept, but the TA sessions, SI sessions, and his office hours are all super helpful. Going to SI is key if you want to do well in this course.
Carretero is one of my favorite teachers I've ever had. He is ridiculously passionate about his material and he is very funny/animated which makes paying attention in lectures easy. Theres a good amount of homework and the tests are hard, but that is just how calc 2 goes. He writes the tests too so Carratero is your best option for 151.
30% average on a test shouldnt be happening
Carretero is a phenomenal instructor. I loved his lectures, he made difficult concepts make sense. He used clickers for attendance, but I would 100% recommend to show up rather than share your clicker. He cares about making concepts easy to digest, and he is really funny. I went into the class dreading calc, but he made the class amazing.
If you have another professor instead of Carretero for 151, Carretero will barely help you. He teaches like a philosophy teacher and conceptualizes the material too much. He draws nicely but barely derives formulas. He is very picky with how students should work to pass. You are lucky only when it comes to knowing what is on the exams beforehand.
Great/funny lecturer, makes hard concepts understandable. Math 151 is a very tough class and meant to weed people out, averages on tests are very low but there was a decent 5-10% curve my semester. To pass, you have to study. I failed once with too many units so I spent more time and went to almost all classes. Lot of library hours for final.
Let's just say don't take his class if you're a woman or he'll see to it that you won't do well. He made that very clear to me.
This guy does not care about you whatsoever. What does he do when his students are in an extremely stressful situation, being forced to move home due to a pandemic? He ramps the class up and makes it harder, still requires attendance at all lectures and gives out more homework than before. if u dont work as hard as u ever have for a class u fail
I would consider myself a math person, but after taking this course I'm starting to have second guesses. Calculus 2 is already a difficult subject to grasp and Carretero does everything in his power to make it even harder. Especially right now in the midst of this pandemic, he has 0 empathy and understanding for his students. Horrendous Program.
Prof. C was a good professor in the beginning of the semester, but completely fell off due to the COVID pandemic. He has made a point of making the class even harder by giving us more work with less support. Interaction with him is nonexistent and all the lectures we watch are from previous semesters. Don't take this class if Fall is online!
Decided to drop this class because of the stress caused by the way Carretero handled the transition to online. He is an egomaniac and doesnt even pretend to care about those in tough situations. He gave us a midterm while classes were supposed to be on pause due to many being forced to move home. Who does that?
In my opinion one of the most evil and terrible professors at SDSU. Does not give a damn about his students and should honestly be fired from his position. Sets up students to fail as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and has had a terrible transition to online coursework. This man should lose his job and never be allowed to teach again.
Calc 2 is well known for being a class where many have to retake, and each semester it seems to get harder. Carretero has in a way stated that he does this to weed out the weak and have the students better prepared for Calc 3, but so many F's might indicate the professor is at fault. He also wasn't able to transition smoothly online during Covid19
Professor C is on one. He refers to himself as "supreme leader" and can be quite nasty to students when they ask questions in class. Aside from that the only good thing about this class is the TA's. they are helpful and basically your only resource.
I only had him as a class coordinator, and he was still terrible. Sent out many condescending emails and made the class harder during the COVID-19 pandemic. Gave an online midterm when everyone was moving out, claimed that he caught "dozens" of students cheating, made the next midterm much harder because of it. Take this class at community college.
This guy is one of the most stubborn and inconsiderate professor's on the campus. When the class moved online due to COVID-19 he gave us a midterm on the FIRST DAY of Online instruction, he also stopped lecturing all together and forced his students to learn calculus 2 from pre-recorded videos. Absolutely terrible professor please Math151 at a CC.
Carretero is formidable but he has his charm (and designs the exams). Make sure you utilize all the online resources and study regularly as the material can be overwhelming. You must be punctual, the TAs are your best friends. The exams are pretty exhausting, make sure your internet connection is solid. Cheating will result in your crucifixion.
Carretero is super energetic during lectures, he clearly explains topics, he has a passion to teach, and you can tell he really wants the best for his students. He also expects a lot from his students so the class probably isnt going to be easy. If you dont work through the problems during lecture and do the homework youre not going to do great
Carretero is easily the worst professor I've had, he gave us a midterm the first day of online classes in spring 2020 while everyone was moving home. He is literally useless if you ask him anything related to course logistics and is so condescending. Only good thing is he makes the tests for M151. He made class harder after COVID, who does that??!
This man is literally the most mean professor Ive ever had to interact with. He isnt teaching lecture for my class but is still in charge of tests, and is making them really difficult with nowhere near enough time. Every student who has emailed him (myself included) has been met with rude responses and absolutely zero help. Avoid at all costs.
This professor loves to see students suffer
Although Prof. Carretero wasn't the actual professor, he was the one behind the curriculum and the tests that make up a majority of your grade. Never have I ever taken a course as brutal and challenging as this one. Don't take this class at SDSU, you will be left to rot here. Unless you're already a master at Calc II, don't take it here please.
Carretero is the math coordinator for Math151 and honestly, just take it at a cc. Don't bother asking for help from him because he responds with sass every time and doesn't even help with the issue. He disregards students needs and made some test problems based off of nothing similar to what we learned. He is honestly so rude and unhelpful
He initially comes off as energetic, enthusiastic and passionate about math and learning. After taking his class twice, I can tell you this is very short lived. Although he is very knowledgeable on calculus, he does not set you up to succeed at all and does not care about helping his students, even through a life-altering pandemic.
Carretero was the coordinator for MATH151, which means he came up with the curriculum and tests. He made this class incredibly hard and my grade tanked bc of him. I got a 5 on the AP Calc 1 test and an A in calc 1 but probably got a C in this class despite having over a 90% in hw (which is graded for accuracy) bc the tests were absurd.
Save yourself some sanity and don't take this guy.
I swear Carretero is out to tear down trying students. i don't even have him as a professor and I was accused of cheating on a question when i didn't and there was absolutely no proof of it either. he basically told me to either admit to cheating i didnt do or get dropped from the class. ive had an A in this class & hes trying to say i cheated? ok
Carretero is out to get students in my opinion, he has a list of students that are blackmailed in a way, "confess or get dropped" for ALLEGEDLY cheating. And he hides all of these qualities while in large lecture. Super unprofessional and on a complete power-trip. STAY AWAY IF POSSIBLE. Like take it at your community college before clicking "enroll
stay away
Professor C is really passionate about what he is teaching. It is a really hard class that I had to take twice and he is the only reason I passed the second time. He is pretty intense sometimes, but he is a pretty cool guy and a solid teacher.
Comes off as energetic and passionate but after 2-3 lectures, that quickly fades away. Lecture attendance was mandatory and there is a lab section as well. HW consists of Labs, Worksheets, and WebAssign problems. Tests are very hard and don't match up with lectures or HW. He's also horrible at responding to emails and is fairly rude. Stay away.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! The class is made up of 4 exams, worksheets, and a final. The exam questions are nothing like the HW questions nor are they like the lecture problems so good luck. Carretero is rude, he does not care about you, you are left to rot. Despite the abysmal averages, he does not curve, so you will likely fail. Avoid him like the plague!
Carretero teaches in a very energetic and fast paced manner so I often had to rewatch lectures. The class is hard so be ready to work and carretero isnt a monster like a lot of people here are saying. This sem they were pretty leniant and provided test corrections so those were a big help. There is one homework due per week but it takes a while.
He is very passionate and very quick. His teaching is also very abstract and focuses on the fundamentals rather than specifics. He's not that bad, might as well take him because he's the test coordinator and there is often miscommunication w other profs. He is very short and can be rude but its almost charming. This will be your hardest class.
Calculus can be hard if you dont put effort into it. Currently taking this class, he is great at explaining and responds all your questions. if you miss a class you can still get notes from someone else but I recommend you go. He really cares that you learn and makes class engaging.
Not a fan of his teaching at all, I normally left lectures feeling extremely confused and stressed. It felt like my TA was basically teaching the class. Exams are 45% of your grade and final is 30% with no curve, no corrections, and no dropped exam. Super frustrating because the other section of 252 got a curve and amazing practice exams.
Lecture is super confusing and unorganized because he only use variables for his examples. No curves or midterms dropped unlike the other professors. Claims he is hard on his students "because we're all future engineers." Zero compassion towards students. Condescending. Tests are nothing like the homework/lectures. This class made me very depressed
The absolute worst class and professor I have taken in undergrad. He is horrendous, please avoid him. The class is made up of midterms, HW, a final, and discussion sections. His teaching is convoluted and his grading is harsh. He is ruthless, and condescending. He does not care about his students. The math department sucks here, take 151 at a CC :(
DO NOT TAKE Carretero. Worst professor I've ever had. The lectures were extremely confusing and only used variables. Only 1-2 examples per chapter so the majority of learning is done on your own. 75% of the class tests. They are extremely difficult and don't relate to the HW at all. The TA and youtube is the reason the whole class didn't fail.
Class is 75% exams, and there is little/no prep to help students do well on exams. Doesn't give the TA's a look at the exams either when the other calc 3 professors do, because then everyone will do too well. The class gets progressively harder as the semester goes on so its easy to slip up. No curve or test corrections either.
Carretero has great lectures but the tests get progressively harder. The class starts out pretty easy but towards the end you do NOT want to miss a lecture or you will fall behind fast.
He is a very sassy man. Lectures are vital. Expect homework to take five hours each week. The tests were mostly conceptually difficult questions with simple numbers, so understanding the concepts ended up being more important than actually being able to do the math.
Awesome class, super interesting, but very tough.
Pretty solid professor overall, the exams are mostly based on what goes on during lecture and are mostly concept based, so as long as you know what's going on in all of his example problems, you should be pretty good for exams.
While the notes can get complicated, prof Carretero is a very enthusiastic guy and you can really see it. Many times he dives into more complex applications of the materials in lectures, and it is really interesting to see the use. He makes math lectures interesting to go to and I appreciate that. Gives you plenty of resources to be successful
He is a great teacher. Very enthusiastic and makes lectures interesting and easy to pay attention to, even at 9:30 (early for me). Tests don't involve trick questions and have easy calculations, so understanding concepts is more important than solving integrals/derivatives. He has a low rating because the class is hard but he is a great teacher.
He knows how to solve all the problems, but his extensive use of variables make the learning rather confusing. Weekly homework takes hours to complete since you are required to show work on all problems. Exams are tough and there is no study guide or review problems, so you have to review class notes and the homework and expect for the best.
Carretero is very passionate about math but he lacks effectiveness in the way his material is presented. He puts problems on tests that he never prepares students for. He uses constant variables for test probs and doesn't put them on hw. He also doesn't put the problems in review. Test problems will be ones you never thought were possible.
failed his class for calc II, decided to give him another chance for calc III, ended up withdrawing.... very exam heavy, HW is nothing like the exams, TA was lost on what to teach us since he doesn't communicate w them. like many have said its just variables and no actual numbers on the exams, can make it a bit difficult to check work.
Very pure evil person; doesn't do curves in the tests and no calculators are allowed during tests.
I took MATH150 and the course was awful. I emailed Prof carretero about my grade and he never responded the entire semester. He doesn't communicate with the lecturers or TAs so the tests made no sense and the questions were all abstract. The MATH150 course is poorly run and doesn't set you up to be successful at all. If anything take Calc at a CC!
Carretero's lectures are engaging, but his exams are concept-heavy and progressively more challenging. Attend class, use the free textbook, and try Unstuck study for exam prep - it really helped me stay on top of the material.
Professor Carretero cares deeply about his students, and wants to see them all truly succeed. The homework exercises are very comprehensive & thorough. Some homework exercises are very difficult, which was frustrating. Exams are very straightforward, with no curveballs. He is a fair grader, and very reasonable. Lectures are energetic and engaging.
He is a super nice teacher and is extremely caring and smart in math. During tests he gives helpful hints and going in to office hours/ talking with him after class really helps. The homework was extremely tough, but it's like that for every diffeq class. He uses a lot of variables instead of numbers during lectures which can be tough to follow
I took a year off of calc because my hs didn't have calc 2. You have to be strong in calc 1 to take this course. Professor Carretero is a smart professor that knows his craft very well, as well as a very funny guy who makes bonds to his students. It is hard to understand his Spanish accent and HH130 has a poor projector. 3 midterms and a final.
he cares a lot about his students and wants to see them succeed, however he uses a lot of variables in his lectures and can be hard to follow at times. He goes through concepts very quickly but is also extremely engaging in lectures
Funny guy, and kind, but really can't explain the subjects in a way that makes sense. Expect to need a lot of help if you want to understand. Tests grades generous, lots of partial credit. HW is a nice grade buffer, abt a letter grade or so. TA seshs not v helpful either, but mandatory. Attn for lec is taken 2x at random and hit total grade afaik.
he does not help his female students. literally told me i should get a tutor because he could not help me. would not recommend.
