Great teacher! super helpful, gives extra credit, homework level isn't too bad
Really great teacher, take him. REALLY fair on grading, smart/passionate. Overall good.
he is an amazing teacher. Very clear and fair when it comes to grading. It is easy to understand everything in his class.
Great professor! Really enjoys his subject, and is very willing to help. Fair grader, and gives extra credit. Definitely worth taking!
Nice person. Easy understand. Tests are not hard if you listen the classes.
LOVE THIS TEACHER. explains difficult concepts in a simple way. challenging quizzes and exams but isn't that the point, to challenge the students? he gives many opportunities for extra credit. will explain as many times you need until you understand the topic. don't take if you don't want to study.
Nice professor! Very helpful and exams are easy as long as you do the online homework.
Good teacher, hard grading however he is just passionate about you learning math right. Sometimes an ass, but its funny. I Would definitely recommend him!
This one of the hardest teachers at BC he dosent know what He is doing and the tests are so hard not even close to the practice on the back of the chapters. His grading is so complicated and more than 60% of students in his class has an avarage of 60 to 65% I recommend you guys to take it with someone else if u don't wanna struggle
He is a nice guy, but not a good teacher. his grading is hard and test are completely different than the book problems. they way he teach is only for people who are really good in math, i recommend taking it with a different teacher if you don't wanna fail the class or not good at math.
i took Chavez for both 141 & 142. in both classes, the quizzes, tests/exams are hard because they don't reflect the hw or worksheets he hands out. you really have to know your material thoroughly to pass. he gives extra cred only because the averages are low and those points save students from failing. he's nice but his style wasn't for me.
This instructor really doesn't know what he is doing. he latterly fails most of the students in his class, if you have an A and after final you end-up with a B or B+ so confusing with grading. The way he teaches so many people in the class doesn't know anything and he tries to give extra credit to boost the average of class. do not recommend him
He does a good job at explaining material clearly. Always available during office hours for help. Trig is a class that you have to study for, and is not a class for slackers. Mr. C is challenging to some degree but is good guy and extremely helpful. Looking forward to Calc with him next quarter!
Instructor Chavez is new at BC and he takes it really hard on students. his teaching style has a really negative affect on students because he teaches calculus from Slide Show, and his test are hard because he bring questions that is not even close to the book.
This instructor is defiantly not made for teaching. he has attitude toward students who asks question or want to clear of what he is saying. his teaching style is totally different. i recommend you guys to take it with someone else if you don't wanna encounter problems cause he really makes problem out of really small things too.
Chavez approach to teaching is flawed. He will lecture about irrelevant things for 40 minutes and then will try to cram in the content in the last 10. I learned more from reading the book than his lectures. His exams were difficult because none of it was based on what he taught, but instead, the book. Avoid this professor.
BEST TEACHER EVER!!!!!! He explains very clear and makes all cal things easier than I thought. As long as you do the online hw, you will be fine!
simply perfect
The only people that have a problem with him are those who want to pass without really studying the material. tests are difficult but challenging, if you understand the concept, it wouldn't be a big deal.
Horrible teacher. Uses power points and hardly does problems on the board. When you don't understand something and he explains it to you again and it still does not make sense, he says "i dont know how else to explain this". ?? He is a math teacher. He is supposed to know how to explain things different ways. I love math but he ruined it for me.
He is the most IMPOLITE teacher I've ever met in BC. Rude to students! His teaching is just so-so, however his ATTITUDE toward students is a big problem. NOT EMPATHETIC,IMPOLITE and NOT HELPFUL. He made easy stuff complicated .I won't trust the positive comments below cuz I was fooled by them to take his class. NOT HELPFUL AND RUDE that what I felt
He has a really Rude and mean personality. i took his class beacuse of some people who rate him good but he is the worst math teacher. he teaches from slide show and make u struggle throught the quarter. take with anyone else but not him
Beware: This is a really hard class. Chavez gets annoyed when you don't understand and is super unapproachable. He seems annoyed to even have to explain things. I attended class every day and did all hw and review sheets and was still getting a D. Tests are way harder than the HW. He doesn't even know students names! He should not be a teacher.
Calculus is a challenging class for most people. I think that Chavez did a good job overall. I received the most help one on one during his office hours. He was always very polite and helpful.
This instructor is really nice and friendly at the beginning. After the 3rd week once he know that it’s too late to drop the class, that’s the time were the students see his real face very rude and unwelcome to students who ask question. He expects you to know everything from his explanation no matter what. don't waste your money on him.
Teaching method is not very well structured. ALWAYS do homework ASAP, the quiz will come before the homework is due. He claims that attendance isn't mandatory, but isn't consistent on posting test days, and won't allow retakes/makeup. I ended up teaching myself from the book and WebAssign.
All I can say is if your an 'A' student, stay away from this class unless you are a math genius and master, because the exams are very difficult and if you screw up you screw up bad. Ricardo likes to give out problems that are beyond the class average level.
He was extremely inconsistent with which days were test days, and he erases the board and skips steps when solving problems. His tests killed my grade and his reviews did not align to the test content. He was demeaning towards the students that asked clarifying questions, and also made it clear at the start of the semester that he had tenure.
This instructor is very rude and unprofessional. If you don't want to hurt your GPA and make your quarter worst try to avoid this guy. I am very good at math and i did my best he still give me a low grade. Take it with any other instructor i bet you will have better experience than him cause he is new unfamiliar with teaching methods.
Good instructor. I learned a lot about trig. It was a challenging subject for me so I did all the on line and book homework. You need to work hard if you want a good grade. He is not a rubber stamp. I appreciated his clear lectures and willingness to help students after class.
calculus is not an easy subject Ricardo is an excellent instructor who's still finding his teaching groove Expect to do intense studying on your own he expects more than the book will teach you. So pay attention to lectures they frequently have information not in the book. If i could i would take his 152 class, best for highly motivated individuals
Chavez is probably one of the best math teachers I've ever had. He is always ready when he comes to class and has the lessons formatted in a way that made it very to comprehend the material while taking notes. He can be cranky at times, and could probably use a bit more sleep but can be fun and is available for help.
The problem with him is that his tests are very tough. He is very willing to help you though. Yet if you want to get an A, you need to really work for it. You cannot fully depend on the review paper for the exams since the questions on the exams are basically everything you have learned from the chapter. Be careful before choosing him.
i won't choose him for the second time. lectures are clear but the tests are pretty hard, he wants his students to come prepared. the questions on his tests are totally different from the review sheet. thus you can't wholly rely on the review sheet before tests. if you don't understand about his lectures, you'll be pretty much screwed.
Mr. Chavez is an amazing teacher! I'm literally so upset that I can't take him for calc 2 since his classes are full! He creates his lectures in a student's perspective so that it will be clear for the student to come back to his or her notes and look at notes that make sense! He's a great teacher! Very helpful!
I would say that this professor is one of my least favorite. Unfortunately his tests did not reflect his lectures very well, meaning that in order to study for his tests I had to find other resources outside my notes and the textbook. He also did not have a very professional attitude towards students and frequently got upset when asked questions.
Exams are extremely hard, I got 4.0 before taking his class. Now, I am screwed.
If you are a student with a high GPA and a love for math, do not take him. His smug attitude towards students combined with his irrelevant and DIFFICULT tests are just demoralizing. He is irresponsible with tests, and puts his interests before the students.
Worst teach I've ever had. Do not recommend
Useless and arrogant.
the worst math teacher I have met so far. Irresponsible attitude for students, assignments, quiz, tests and everything in his class. his lectures are not match the homework assignment and test. You will have batch of homework online, test are difficult and have no idea how he grade them. Don't take his class until you have learned it before.
You never know what the question ask in the exam. The exam are more harder than everything. If you didn't do well in any exam, you will get a bad grade. No exact review in the exam and the final. Questions are confuse.
So far the best lecturer in Bellevue College! Calc 2 can be challenging for beginners, but Ricardo has done a very great to in explaining everything we need to know. Tests and exams are very reasonable if you studied well. You will learn A LOT if you participate in the class. If you wanna learn real math, be sure to take him!!!
I took calc 1 and got an A-, I took his class afterwards and failed it. He expects you to be as good at math as he is. Rude to students and is irritated and when challenged. He will even humiliate you in class.
If you are majoring in Any Engineering field don't take class with him cause he will screw your whole GPA in one quarter. I am a Computer science Major and i had 4.0 in all my math classes but he made hate math for one quarter. defiantly not recommend him specially for those who don't like math.
Tests are tough. SELF STUDY IS ESSENTIAL. He is also rude and unwilling to help students who are late or does not attend class. I did all the homework and almost every questions on the textbook and was still taken aback by what is on his tests. I feel like he takes pride in making students' life miserable. He will ruin your GPA !
He knows the materials inside out. Very simple & straightforward. Not the type that comes up with fun problems to keep you awake during lecture. Won't put up with slackers. Can be rude and cranky at times but I don't give an eff. He doesn't either. Bottom line - Want an easy A? Avoid him at all costs. Want a real challenge? Count on this guy.
Very simple and clearcut grading. Explains the concepts very well in class. Homework is optional, and if you do it, you're more than set for the tests.
Be sure to attend and ask questions. Chavez is very friendly and nice when given the chance. His grading is fair and reasonable. Study for his second midterm heavily.
Professor Chavez has a great way of making difficult concepts seem very simple. He's always open to feedback and is overall a very good teacher and I enjoyed the quarter
Quality Calculus Three Professor. Go to class, review calculus 1&2, and you'll do excellent!
Expect to work for your grade! But he's humorous (sarcastic, which I enjoy) and very helpful. He simplifies difficult concepts. His tests are challenging but do the homework, participate in class, and ask questions, you'd be able to figure it out. and even if you don't get an A, he's an amazing inspirational instructor. Love Math because of him.
I normally dislike most of my math professors, however he has changed my outlook on math. He makes it fun and truly cares for his students. He shows true compassion and patience when helping his students with math! will definitely take him for all of my math classes and recommend him to anyone who has problems with math.
So I came into his math class passing my high school Algebra 2 class with a D+, and I and I thought I'd never understand algebra or math ever. This man changed that. He clears up issues and answers any math related questions. Be respectful and do the homework, and this class will be an easy A. He HATES CELLPHONES. Highly recommend taking him.
The worst math teacher ever. He is very rude if you start asking too many questions. Expects you to know everything. Be ready for Pop quizzes!
Mr. Chavez is a great teacher. While he goes through material quickly and it takes some work to keep up with his lectures, he is always willing to go back and clarify. The saddest time of the quarter was when we had a substitute teacher for a few days.
I thought it was easy to get an A in his class if you show up and attempt to learn the concepts. If you are a visual learner you will like him. He is quirky but a decent professor. Would take him again.
I had Mr. Chavez for math 098 and he was so enjoyable! Math lectures are boring no matter what, but he really made them interesting. Its a very fast paced class and he gets picky on attendance, so skipping isn't really an option. There's homework almost every night, but he is a very generous grader so you can earn 100 for just trying.
By far, the best math teacher I have ever had! I took him for math 098 and he was amazing! There are weekly that you take the first 20 minutes, then after you do corrections with your classmates to get some credit back. DO THE HOMEWORK. He drops the 3 lowest homework scores which is why he does not except late work.
Really love his job. Great at explaining everything in more than one way. Make sure you do the homework and keep up with the online and it will be hard not to pass. His exams are solo and then peer corrected for partial credit. He wants you to pass. A great professor!
This guy is not meant to be a teacher. He has the worst teaching style that makes students hate Math. Even though i like math but his pop-quiz, attendance is too much. I don't have to show up to class everyday if i know the material. Yes if you talk to him about your grade he gets very emotional and defensive.
Ricardo is the greatest teacher I like in BC. His lecture is easy-understanding if you prepare for the class before. Homework is needed to be well done, if you cannot figure out the details of the homework, then you probably will miss some points in quiz or exam. And extra credits are a lot, you can save your score by those credits.
Professor Chavez rocks! Even though math 98 in summer quarter is fast paced, he made sure that we had the material down pat. I loved his teaching style, which was dynamic with lots of visual aids. Although I hate math, I was able to retain the material and get an A+. He was also very accommodating of my disability (DRC students take note) Amazing!!
Its really on you to show up and pay attention as well as do the work. He doesn't care if you late or don't show up. Homework is graded on completion which is a plus, he gives good feedback on your homework as to what you did wrong but if you tried you'll get 100% overall he's a sarcastic chill teacher. Teaching style is straight up and blunt
So glad I had Professor Chavez as my first calc teacher. Everything he said made perfect sense. He uses a combination of graphs and equations to explain concepts on the board and is happy to clarify things if you get confused at any point during the lecture. Doesn't grade on attendance but you won't pass if you miss the bomb lectures.
His teaching style may not be the best but if you do some outside work before or after class, then you would do Okay. His grading policies are nice. He is understanding and helps you with the web assign problems too. In the last month he extended the web assign dates to the end of the quarter which gave a lot of time to work on the problems.
Good lectures, very clear, shows all work in explanations. Optional online hw with 15 tries so you can get a guaranteed 20% of your grade as an A too. Almost too lax on hw to learn it but that just leaves it up to students to find problems to do and make sure they've got it.
he's a good teacher I took already 3 classes with him. I like the way he use to teach but he's lit rude and direct . when you ask many questions he gets mad or tell you he can not waste all time to explain you what you want to know.
Professor ricardo is wonderful and really like teaching math take him and make sure to put in the effort. Also, he can sometimes be rude if you ask to many questions so just ask after class!
Best math professor at BC! Explains things in an easy to understand and intuitive way, rather than in confusing math jargon. Goes through lots of examples and gives great feedback to help you improve on homework. He can be a little blunt, but only if you are not putting in effort.
Worth it
His way of teaching math is just the best. He explains things clearly with examples. and what he is teaching is what is going to be in a quiz or test. i would recommend him if you want a teacher who can explain things clearly where you can understand and not rush.
Quirky--think stereotypical engineer. Seemed uncomfortable/intimidated by us, especially in the beginning. Can be a little rude at times, but give him respect and he'll make your classroom experience enjoyable. He's full of interesting facts that even I find interesting, and I don't even like math. Very methodical teacher.
Hes not bad when he is teaching you math BUT... try to ask questions and he makes you feel stupid. Students in class would sometimes ask questions and I would feel bad for them because he seems like he is annoyed by questions and pissed off sometimes. Not trying to mean but from experience, he is awkward. He also laughs at his own jokes...a lot :/
Chaves teaching style is alright. He is very rude, arrogant, and becomes annoyed when students ask for clarification on something or even asks multiple questions. His attitude towards students is very negative. He will talk down to students and he will make them feel bad about themselves. I would highly NOT recommend this teacher.
This was the first time he taught MATH107 and he was literally throwing A's at us, every exam or quiz was either open book or take home quiz. If you're consistently late to class he won't like you, and the same if you don't show up. Probably the easiest class I'll ever take in college
By far the easiest math teacher yet. he knows his stuff. easy A. one down side is he does get frustrated when you ask math questions below the level you are at or if you consistently interrupt his lecture to ask math questions you should ll ready know how to do. but offers plenty of office hours for questions before and after class.
Professor Chavez is great at explaining the material and provides ample practice in class. He assigns minimal homework and grades on completion. He is very helpful in class and responds to emails quickly. Make sure you study with the text book because the homework is not enough practice to master the skills for class. He also doesn't curve tests.
Ricardo is a great guy. His lectures are very straight forward and easy to understand. If you pay attention and take notes and do practice problems you will get at least a B. His tests are very very difficult. If you study for the test you are still going to fail.
All I gotta say is Disrespected. He's though grader and if you're targeted, there's no way for you to succeed.
Want to self teach your self calculus and ruin your gpa? This class is for you. I have always been good at math until I got into his calculus class. He's a horrible teacher and half the stuff that are on his tests, he doesn't go over in class, which makes tests impossible. He also gave us a worksheet in 151 that had problems that require calc 152.
He typically gives worksheets to practice before the test. The worksheets are somewhat helpful but I suggest practicing problems from the textbook. Sometimes his answers can be wrong on the practice worksheet so double check with a partner. Homework is easier than quizzes and tests. Tough grader so I suggest studying and working hard to get an A.
He really nice, he always available in his office hours to helps you. His lectures in class are easy for you to understand but his tests not. However, he will gives you a lot of online homework, which can help you practice problems that may include in the tests. So, you just need to do those homework and you will be fine.
Chavez is the worst teacher I have ever had in my 11 years of education. He does NOT teach well and expects you to know everything before being taught He is unsympathetic, rude, and shows no morsel of respect for his students. Please do not make the mistake of ignoring ratemyprofessor. He made me feel dumb and he made me hate math forever.
I hate math, but I took him during summer quarter, and I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. Many say that he's rude, but I think he's just disrespected. Going out of my way to show him respect, though it didn't impact my grade as far as I can tell, went far in making my experience much more enjoyable than other people's. I hope to take him again!
He was okay. He did get upset when people asked him questions, so I can see how some could feel disrespected. Personally, I didn't enjoy the class. I relied on Khan Academy heavily, but this is college anyway so I think studying outside of the class and not understanding the material right away is rather normal.
Ricardo was one of my favorite teachers, people give him a very bad rap. He was raised in a different generation, so what most people find disrespectful about him, he probably finds normal. You can tell he's nervous sometimes, so just try to make him feel comfortable, and he will reciprocate! I took him for MATH099 and got over 100% in the class.
Ricardo is a great teacher! Go to class and listen to his lectures otherwise you might not understand the content. His tests are hard but he always curves them and if you study you will be okay. He grades homework pretty hard but gives an extra 5% if you work on it with a partner. It's a pretty hard class but Ricardo makes it fun.
What an amazing teacher! Ricardo did an excellent job of explaining the material in a way that was understandable and relatable to the real world. Attendance is not required, but he is a lot harder on you if you are not engaged during the class. Show up, do the homework, be engaged and you will do very well. Very caring and willing to help out.
His lectures are easy to follow. He really loves math and it shows more if you, as a student, show interest and curiosity. He makes use of MathLab for quizzes which you can take 3 times, and the highest score will be retained. His exams are fair in difficulty. You get 100 for doing enough items in homework, and he leaves useful notes on your paper.
Mr. Chavez was a good teacher when it came to knowing the material he taught in class, but sometimes when students would ask questions he could get rather annoyed. One time a student asked a question about solving a problem using a more advanced method and he rudely responded that he should have never asked the question.
Something new was learned everyday- If i missed one or two classes i had no idea what was going on Teacher was nice, sometimes was rude
tests were extremely hard compared to the rest of the material taught. the only time you could meet outside of class was immediately before class because he taught so many other classes. he was sometimes nice but would get rude or offended if you ask questions.
Chavez was an okay math teacher. He expects you to know precalc and calc 1 topics, so if you ask a question relating to those, he can get frustrated at you. His lectures are different from the textbook, so even though attendance is optional, go to class. Had 3 quizzes and 3 exams. Pretty flexible with the changes made in the school year.
Sometimes it just gets uncomfortable to ask questions. I did a lot of studying outside of class and with tutors. Be careful, everything he teaches you is in the worksheets. Even if you have done one practice problem, it could be on the test. Not enough to understand. Sets up for success on HW and Quizzes, that part was nice.
Every class is a lecture so participation is essential. The textbook isn't necessarily needed but the online thing that come with it are needed to take quizzes and do the optional homework. He can be a little bit rude but he has pretty lenient policies and is very helpful.
Professor Chavez is a bit all over the place sometimes, but I think its because he's so busy he never sleeps, let alone has time to be organized. Math 099 was an easy class, and he taught it very well. He was very clear about expectations and made the class not too difficult to pass. 3 tests + final and all quizzes are online. Hw only takes 10 mins
Mr. Chavez is a very unique and blunt teacher although in my opinion his in class time was well spent and I had a good time taking this class. I was always entertained and felt prepared for all test. Overall with Mr. Chaves just show up, do your work, pay attention and you should do great.
Chavez is a good teacher. His 99 class sounds way better than the calc classes. Several HW assignments a week graded on completion and not too hard, quizzes on MyMathLab with three attempts. Two in-class tests pretty hard plus college final. Lectures are easy to take notes on but easy to fall behind if you miss a day. I feel like I learned a lot.
Mr. Chavezs Math 98 class was only graded on how many topics you complete throughout the quarter. He gave no mandatory homework and your grade in the class was based off of tests. If you missed a question in the tests he would just roll it over to your next test and he gives you many chances to improve your grade. He also has captivating lectures
He adapted speeds to fit the class which while slow, helped me prepare for the weekly test on Friday so that I would not have to study outside of class. He also gave opportunities each week to redo specific questions missed as well as make up tests in general. He provided many examples when lecturing that appear on test. His class is an EASY A.
Mr Chavez is a fantastic teacher, and I would highly recommend taking him if you have the opportunity. However, he only teaches in person, and if you take his class online it's actually taught by a 'replacement instructor', so be careful. Classes were every day, and a test was every week, but you were allowed a 'cheat sheet' and able to retake it.
Chavez is a fantastic teacher. There are lectures every day that you absolutely have to attend otherwise you'll miss something and fall behind, but he always makes time after class if you have questions or need to catch up. He recently changed his teaching style, and if you're trying to decide which prof to take, pick him, you won't regret it.
He's a good teacher. I like him a lot more than the other professors here, and I'm going to take all of my math classes with him. The tests have weekly retakes and he helps you out if you're struggling with a topic.
He's a great prof. I would def take his class again.
He gives a exam every Friday, but if you get something wrong it will be on your next exam so you can try again. (if you keep getting it wrong its okay, it will keep being on your next test until you get it right)
Chavez was nice and very open to helping with a grade, but most people in his class were struggling including me. I'm currently afraid of my grade even through the tremendous amount of hours i put in to studying for this class. Don't recommend taking this professor unless you have free time, though the professor is still very nice. :/
All topics are relatively easy to understand, he slows down when the class is struggling. He has lots of office hours and has extra credit topics at the end. He allows a notecard for tests and homework is optional. He provides lots of examples similar to his test questions. His expectations are very clear, don't miss class, lectures aren't recorded
Lots of office hours. Slows down when the class is struggling. Great grading system. When you don't get a topic correct, you're gonna be tested on it the next week. Topics add up and you have a lot of attempts to get a question right. Optional final. Doing homework doesn't affect your grade
He does MBT (Mastery-Based Testing) every week with no required HW. Homework is assigned for studying, but its not for a grade. Questions are marked as different assignments in Canvas and have a grade of 0 out of 1, unless you get it right. Questions with 0 out 1 show up on future tests for retaking purposes. Started course with F, finished with A.
The professor was awful. Normally, I do not struggle with math, however, Professor Chavez's testing style is horrendous. Avoid this professor at all costs if you want to feel confident about your testing abilities.
Good lectures and good effort put into the material but super unprofessional attitude every day. So passive aggressive and defensive about everything makes every class period super uncomfortable. I would recommend steering clear of any of his classes it's just unpleasant to feel like someone is super angry at you every day for no reason.
Prof. Chavez was available for study hall 4 hours total during the week. He doesn't grade hw but provides lots of resources and practice problems. He gave us a quiz via canvas once a week, and we had about 4 days to complete and two attempts. Exams have built in extra credit. If you fail this class your honestly just not making an effort.
changed grading syst from MBT, but still very fair, he wants everyone to succeed, grades fast and not super harsh, don't miss class, go to OH and ask questions, curves exams + offers a lot of EC, do the optional hw and worksheets he provides, almost weekly quizzes 5pts-2 attempts and 3 midterms w/ optional final that can only inc grade
Mr. Chavez is a great professor. Optional homework and final. His new grading system is amazing and his lectures are informing, but if you don't attend class, you can learn from the online textbook. I would take him for all of my math classes!
Very effective at teaching his subject, and has very reasonable expectations which he communicates clearly. His grading style is generous, allows for some second chances to get your grade higher, and has multiple extra credit opportunities. If you put in a little bit of effort you should easily get an A, and be well prepared for future classes.
Proffesor Chavez doesn't suffer fools lightly. If you're an overly sensitive person who can't handle a critical opinion from time to time, or don't want to work then don't take his class, otherwise, he is awesome. If you're easygoing, capable, & willing to put in any effort then you should be fine. He makes learning math easy.
If I could I would take Chavez over and over, math was never my favorite but he made sure I loved it! he's sweet, caring and really lends a hand. He made sure the class understood before moving on to the next thing! TAKE HIS CLASSES!
He only grades quizes and tests. On top of that, he is extremely passive-aggressive and people are genuinely afraid to ask him questions. The entire class failed test 2, and for an entire class period, he wouldn't stop berating us about it and saying how it wasn't his fault.
His tests and quizzes did not reflect what he lectured in class. I found that I would do the online homework (that was not required) and still, I didn't know much on the tests. The average grade on the last test was a D so it's not just a couple of people doing poorly. He also makes a lot of passive-aggressive comments.
took him for 141,142 and 151, overall nice person, wants you to succeed- optional final can only inc grade and has a lot of OH, some EC. lectures everyday, practice a lot, ask q's. his tests can be hard and only 50min but it's not impossible to do good- 93 points for A (not %). make sure u know pre req things quizzes:~35pts 3 tests: 70pts, ~9pts EC
Professor Chavez gets a bad rep for being passive aggressive, but I personally found that he just wants his students to do well. Ask questions about the exam review so that you know what to expect on the exam. Homework is not mandatory though I did most of it anyways to help with my grade. Don't be afraid to ask questions he is a great teacher imo.
Professor Ricardo is a great guy. However, his class is Really challenging. There is no homeworks. His quizzes are hard. Always go to his study hall if you need help on his quizzes sometimes he even gives you answers. The tests are prolly the worst thing bout his class. (They are hard.) But try to do your best and avoid doing the optional final.
So easygoing and amazing. Also such a kind person. An awesome professor would love to take his class again. Attendance is not mandatory, homework isn't mandatory, and quizzes weren't mandatory. They were all considered extra credit and it was simultaneously the easiest-to-understand class and also the easiest class to get an A in.
Many people rating him favorably are taking below 100 level math. Of course, a below 100 level math will be easy. If you are taking a hard math class like pre-calculus 1 or 2 or calc avoid this prof. Because he only grades quizzes and tests if you do poorly its really hard to bring your great up. Tests are hard and he is passive-aggressive.
Final is optional and you only take it if you didn't do well on your other midterms. Exams are relatively easy and reflect his lectures. GO TO LECTURES AND TAKE NOTES EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE OPTIONAL. My favorite math prof took him for both preclac/calc and he is a great prof. He does come off passive aggressive at times but honestly just ignore it.
literally so awesome, his lectures are amazing and his exams reflect them. Took him for 2 quarters and enjoyed every part. He actually enjoys math and you can tell. His grading style is impeccable and he even rounded my grade up a few percent just so I could get an A. Plan to take him again soon!
I normally don't struggle in math, but this Math class was a NIGHTMARE. The professor teaches poorly, rushing through the material and making mistakes. Expects you to know everything. Grades heavily depend on exams, which sucks because his exams are BRUTAL. About half the class got a C or below on exam 1. Avoid it if you care about your grades.
The best.
If you would like to work hard, and understand concepts in detail, you are with the right teacher. He's really helped me to get my level away higher. However, he's a hard grader instructor and all grading will counted for only exams and assignments, there's no grade taken for homework or even attending classes.
He really helped get me on the right track in math. Made me enjoy math again. Your only grades are your quizzes and tests, no homework. Not many resources other than textbook (Pearson, iykyk), but wonderful lectures. Take notes, you'll refer to them a lot. Very pleasant and passionate! Great at explaining, and no such thing as dumb questions.
His teaching and lectures overall were pretty difficult to keep up, and his exams are pretty BRUTAL, although the only thing that allowed me to understand most of the concept was Pearson but it got more difficult as he kept teaching us. Although he provides exam reviews, the exam itself is hard and he throws a lot of curveballs.
He goes WAY too fast and barely answers questions. His class is very test-heavy and tests are horrible. The final is optional but you will NEED it if you get less than 20 points on your exam (20 points is the maximum grade for an exam)... Even if you do really well on the quizzes but even slightly poorly on the tests, your grade will die.
He goes way too fast and expects you to remember EVERYTHING. I have never struggled this much in a class before. If you don't want to kys then don't take him. Once he finds out he has 5 mins left, he crams everything and is super messy. Class average for exam 3 was a C. Cried myself to sleep before and after every exam :3
He's super caring and wants to help.GO to office hrs for ANYTHING you're confused on because he will help you, even for quizzes.Lectures go a bit fast but there's lot of material to cover, so take good notes.I found optional pearson ?'s helpful for practice. Know how do exam study guide & ASK ?'s. This is my 2nd class w/him and I plan to take more!
Chavez is awesome & wants his students to succeed. He gives more ?'s on exams than u can do so u can focus on what u know!Final exam is optional but an absolute life-saver if you didn't do well on one of them.I had to sacrifice studying for the second exam and failed it to focus on a bio exam on the same day but got an A because of the final exam.
As someone who is not the most math-passionate, this class made me enjoy math. He has great lectures, and you can always ask questions, no matter how 'dumb' you may think they are. You won't have to know your peers (as there's not much collaboration), but making a friend(s) is nice, as they can help you with notes and concepts. 2nd class with him!!
We all reported him to the dean for the insults he said.I don't have space to type them all, but I asked if I could take the final A WEEK early & he said "I've bent over backwards for students before & I don't want do that 'cause you'll either fail or leave it blank" but I literally never left one blank & he knew I tried hard in class. AVOID!!!
Comments made about stupid questions/assumptions made on quizzes were unwarranted and unproductive. I appreciate wanting the topics to be learned, but there are better ways to demonstrate expectations. We are at school to reach our goals, CONSTRUCTIVE criticism is great/welcomed however it crosses a line when it demeans and therefore unproductive.
He's pretty mean, but real. He set up my class in that the final is just retaking all/whatever tests you didn't do well throughout the quarter, an amazing system. His tests are a bit more difficult than other math151 tests I've seen.
He's a bit condescending sometimes but he's pretty real. Final exam system works great though.
Professor Chavez does everything he can to give you a good grade. His lectures are great and the final is just retaking any exam you didn't do well on. However, the exams are long and pretty hard- you are not expected to finish. Instead, there is a set 25 questions which dictate 100% and 15 extras on top of that where you can earn extra credit.
I can't overstate the benefits that Mr. Chavez offers his students. For the 142 class, the total points available are 105. 30 points come from quizzes and the rest from exams. If you're looking for a professor who is always ready to help with any issues and is passionate about teaching, Mr. Chavez could be a great fit for you.
He was good, lectured well and made sense. Was only graded on quizzes and exams so one wrong answer and your grade drops a lot.
Honestly his lectures are useless. He doesn't explain things clearly and is incredibly rude to students to the point where you can't ask a question without being humiliated in front of the whole class. I do love the way his test are set up and I love the quizzes, the only thing is the things on the study guide do not translate onto the test.
Ricardo was very forward in his teaching. He would sometimes get mad at students if they repeat a question that was asked a few classes back. His grading system for tests was nice, you didn't have to finish the entire test to get an 100%. His final in this class is an option for retaking 1-3 of the 3 tests throughout the quarter. Very moody.
You MUST show up to class for lecture and take lots of notes. Weekly quizzes- go to office hours! He's more helpful in office hours. 3 exams w/ optional final to retake for higher credit (won't lower grade) He is a good teacher but is passive aggressive. Overall ok but not the best. Get a friend in the class to share notes & help with quizzes.
He's not great at teaching and he doesn't teach the material on the exams. What he teaches in class is different from the weekly quizzes he assigns.
4-6 quizzes a quarter on average. 3 exams a quarter with 3 extra points of credit, only need to get 65-70% of questions right on any given exam to receive a 100. Optional final, only take if you want to improve your prior exam grades. Not harsh at all, just put in the effort and he'll respect you.
Ricardo is a good teacher, but as a lot of other reviewers said, he's passive-aggressive. There are 7 quizzes, 3 mini exams, and an optional final. The professor won't allow you to take the final if you have an A. His lectures are very useful, so it's important to attend as many as possible to understand the material. Office hours aren't as helpful
I really liked his grading policies. Gave lots of extra credit and chances to make up points. The exams are very hard and you will need to study a lot on your own but if you have questions he takes time to explain them. He could be a little passive aggressive at times but overall a great professor.
I very much enjoyed him as a teacher! I understood him very clearly. Extremely easy if you go to class. I made the mistake of not going for a while and ended up not doing well on my second exam, so go to class!!!!
Attendance isn't mandatory but the lectures he gives are very helpful and are fairly easy to understand if you take notes. Tests aren't graded very harshly and partial credit is almost always given for wrong answers. Practice tests are hit or miss but generally are very helpful. Final allows you to basically retake ALL 3 previous exams.
Professor Chavez was passionate about math and clear on graded materials. Homework was optional, making the class test-heavy. Tests were difficult and didn't align well with study guides, but his lenient grading allowed grades to be replaced by the final. However, he was often rude, dismissive, and discouraging when students asked questions.
Basically don't take his class if you're taking Calc1 first time or it's your first math class. He doesn't really teach, he rushes to explain week long stuff in one class, so he can cancel next classes, he doesn't like questions, gets annoyed easily, be prepared to learn everything on your own. As mentioned by other reviewers passive-aggressive.
When I didn't do well on a test, he didn't offer much guidance or understanding. The class focuses on teaching formulas, but when it came time for the tests, the questions were much harder than what we covered in class. I ended up having to teach myself a lot of the material outside of class. While I was still able to pass. I wouldn't recommend him
In terms of grading policies- no better choice for math at BC. In terms of professors, his teaching style can be confusing and hard to follow. But u don't need to finish every question on tests for a 100, no HW, 2 attempts on untimed online quizzes, no-harm optional final. Sometimes mean lol. Show up everyday + try ur best, you'll earn his respect.
Everyone seems to like Ricardo but I personally despise him. His teaching is average, but he has this attitude of "I'm above all of you" that drove me up the wall. He felt insanely arrogant, seeing his students as below him and constantly making snide comments to reenforce this. I swear he only got the job for the power trip.
Pretty chill teacher but exams are pretty tough. Average for both exams especially exam 1 was so bad but the final policies nice. I wouldn't take em again because I'm just taking math for the credit at this point but it someone's passionate for math then this is probably the class to take
Lectures are disorganized and fast-paced, so it's very easy to get lost
Test heavy. Little to no guidance. Questions in class is a no go. Need to be in a study group.
i hate this guy.
honestly i don't know why he has so many good ratings, he either writes them himself or someone is lying.
I will be 100% honest with you. DO NOT TAKE HIM. He not good at explaining at all, He's extremely mean i thought everyone was exaggerating but no, he will make you feel insecure and not smart enough. If you are struggling you are a goner because he will not help at all. Self study course, crams a lot of lessons in 3 days. office hours are useless
Take this class if you want to FAIL. no matter how much you study you will fail. He is not good in explaining, doesn't answer question he makes fun of you instead. office hours are unnecessary because he will sit their and say "how do you not get it". self study, no feedback, if you are struggling you are basically failing because he wont help.
Really great prof, first class ever in BC and was really glad it was him. Clear and well-paced lectures, and the class environment was pretty good. Final can replace all test grades which was great, and can also do final for only 1st 2nd or 3rd test you already took so all grades can be brought up in the end.
aight so i was so ready to give this man a 1 star but he actually clutched in the end bc his grading criteria is so strange lol (not complaining bc it made me pass) his exams sucks tho they do not correlate at all with study guides so like lowkey just try ur best and u can fail 2 exams (i did) and still pass so thx ricardo u the man
His class isn't the easiest if you aren't the greatest at math, but as long as you work hard complete the optional online assignments, you should have a good time with his class. A quick tip for studying is to study for the review and the online homework but also his quizzes as well because he sometimes puts that stuff on his tests.
Great professor! Let's us use AI in quizzes, easy tests if you are good at math like me, and teaches very great! Bonus points for American First!!! Iykyk
Relies heavily on 3 exams. It's useful but does not often give feedback. I spent more time out of class learning the subject through tutors than I did coming into his class. A waste of time and money would not suggest taking this professor unless absolutely necessary. Makes condescending remarks to his students and doesn't care about teaching.
