Talked about himself most of the time. Learned more from the book than I did from him. I fail to see how in 16 weeks we can only learn about 3 countires (GB, Germany, Japan). Very condesending to people who asked questions.
He was TERRIBLE but easy. He does always talk about himself and he is very opinionated and teaches with his bias views. He is not helpful and is rude when you ask for help.
Mr. Salas kept his lectures very clear with the reading material which if you listened and read the book, you should pass not problem. But he is poor in answering questions. Good class if you don't need to interact with a teacher.
FJC just doesn't have quality Poly Sci teachers. Look somewhere else... Sat in three Poly Sci classes so far...Jodi, Conforti, and Salas. Ened up taking the class at the University..they are not anal about attendance... :)
He gives you a packet to fill out and that's about it. You learn nothing from his class cause he talks about himself and dumb issues. He will give u about 2 questions a meeting from the packet of about 300 questions. Memorization and self teaching Class
Mr.Salas is an interesting teacher.Part of our requirement for the class is this huge study guide which he has students pay $2.50 at a place in Fullerton with a rude manager.Strange, bc no other professors charge students for study guides.
There is some truth to the negative posts, the study giude was not what I expected. However, he lets you replace your lowest test with an essay, keeps the lectures intersting (I dont mind people expressing opinions,) and was never rude or "unhelp
I took Prof Salas' course during the summer a few years ago. How hard can the class be? Read the books and do the study guide. I went to class since I enjoyed hearing his discussions.
The only thing I remember from his class is that he is Catholic, grew up in the barrio, and is a Democrat. He talks and talks and talks and all you have to do is memorize your study guide. He's very knowledgeable, though, and a very passionate man.
Get ready to teach yourself, and come to class to hear a bunch of meaningless crap. Yeah this class is easy, but the teachers a chump.
If there wasnt a penalty for not going to class then there would be no reason to go to his class. One day he spent 20 minutes talking about periods, kidney stones, and how much it must hurt to give birth. seriously.
The class is simply reading the book and filling out (and memorizing) the study guide. His lectures rarely, if ever, reinforced the reading.

You don't need to take notes from his lectures--his study guide is replicated on all his exams. If you utlizie the study guide and know the material from it, you should pass with an "A". I got a kick out of his class! I would take him again and get another "A".
I am currently taking this class for winter session. exam ?s r 95% on the study guide. I have some questions that i marked on my study guide that are on the exam. If you want to be more precise on whats on da exam.... [email protected] other dan dat, dis teacher is not as bad as they say.
Not sure what these people are complaining about but he is NOT as bad as these one's say. He's actually pretty nice. More importantly, his tests are EASY and all you have to do is study the study guide. Sure, his lectures suck but do your study guide during class, he doesn't care.
I really like Professor Salas! Not only is he very witty and funny but he has a passion for what he does, which is honorable. He doesn't give you anything you can't handle and is very leniant with grading. If i can endure five hours with him a day he gets an A in my book.
Was in his class 10 years ago, and couldn't stand him. Having now finished my own MA & PhD, I realize how ignorant and maybe dumb this man is. I had really hoped FC would have gotten rid of him. Does a real disservice to the students. Does not know his subject. Or doesn't teach it. Horrible.
Class is easy, study guide is an almost photocopy LOL of his exams, just a little switching around of question order and context, but all words in study guide are in tests. Hes fantastic if youre a LIBERAL yourself, but bring ear plugs if you identify yourself with Rebulicans.
Funny teacher and NOT A JERK! He talks about things and you will have no clue what he says but he can be easy. The answers are right in front of you. If he still teaches the same then the worksheets are pretty much the same as his tests. I passed the class with ease.
Hey, his class is easy. He gives you a workbook and the test duplicates the study guide. All you have to do is study it and you'll get an A. Class lectures are based on current topics. For those who are "conservative" they might be offended, but that's what political discourse is all about!!!!!
This guy is so obsessed with bashing the Bush Regime, that he forgets to teach! His lectures ignore the chapter reviews from the books, instead he goes on for hours about how the U.S. is coming to an end. A nihilist who believes we will be nuked by Bush's successor. As a Liberal, I am just ashamed.
the questions on the test are a direct representation of his study guide.he does not focus on the material itself but incoporates it into what is going on in our society today. i think that his lectures are very interesting because he talks about the real issues that the media does not focus on.if u do the study guide you will be fine.
Students were so sick of this guy that they dropped out like flies. Every lecture was a biased tirade aimed at the Republicans or the USA. I'm a liberal: Tell me something I don't know. Does not instruct, simply preaches. All he does is show videos to kill the time otherwise. Does not expect more than a C because he does not teach. AVOID THIS NUT!
Study the guide and get an A. Simple as that. The answers are literally handed to you in the compendious guide. As for the lectures, expect to be entertained. He has plenty of stories and video clips and RANTS. If you can't stand the (liberal) mirror opposite of Republican talk radio, stay clear. If you can't read a guide, drop out of school.
Tenured teacher on burn out. It is true, you purchase a study guide with all the answers however if you want a class to teach you, this isn't the one. This professor speaks the truth and his political opinions( This is what this class is about) and some republicans get upset by it and leave negative feedbacks. Easy to understand and test materials are based exactly on books and lectures
TERRIBLE! I would not recommend this teacher to my worst enemy. He gives out a study guide containing 300 questions for each test! There are only 50 questions per test! There's an opportunity to do an extra credit essay. He is boring and VERY opinionated. He counts absences and tardy's...DON"T DO IT
The absolute worst teacher I've ever had!!! If I hadn't read the books that go along with the class I would only have learned this man's insane political views. Do not take this class because this "professor" doesn't want to teach, he wants a captive audience. Also there are penalties for being late and absent.

I went to FC, then transferred to UCLA and got a BA and MA in PS...I know my stuff...and I know what teaching methods are effective. Ricardo Salas is a joke of a teacher. He gives out 300 questions before a test and pulls them out and puts them on a test - what type of teaching method is that??!?! He need to check himself.
This teacher is horrible. FC has many outstanding teachers and this guy doesn't fit in. Not willing to help and talks more about his opinons than the material. Very intelligent but lazy. I got an A in the class but still think he is a poor educator. Just do the study guide, memorize and your good to go.

If you want to learn anything, do not take this class. Salas should not be teaching honors courses. I didn't pay hundreds of dollars to sit and listen to his banter about how Bush and Republicans are evil, or his pathetic life.

Very unclear style of teaching. Rambles and strays from topic often. Odd sense of humor. Best bet is to buy the Study Guide and memorize the questions. The questions from Guide are word for word in the test.

this may sound odd, but i took this class more than once, not because i liked it, but because i didnt do well enough to pass. i took prof salas again because after the first time i realized what was needed to pass his class--just study the guide and dont take the energy to listen to his lectures unless you wnat to know about his personal life.
Tests are straight from the study guide. He is a POSC professor so you should expect his strong opinions to be expressed. Overall, it's an easy class to pass just go by the study guide because that's where all the answers are.

His lectures are meaningless, so I did other work on my laptop. This class is good if you want an A. He gives you the test questions via the study guide. They are taken verbatim from the study guide. It is a lot of material to study, but ultimately, 100% on all tests is pretty attainable with a little effort.

HE is realy good teacher. He lectures the current politics too. If you really want to learn and interested to know about politics,go with him. Everybody told me to not to go with him, but I just look at my time convienance, I feel godd and I am getting 'A' grade in his class. He is so helpful too. I don't know why people hate him.

The cool thing is that you can kick back, relax and sleep in his class if you want. You can text on ur cell all day if u want, the only thing he asks is to show up. He even gives u a study guide, all you have to do is follow it. Every question on his tests is from that guide. He also gives u a review day where he pretty much narrows it down for u.
This guys loves the sound of his own voice. do his study guide during his lectures, that's all they're good for since he rarely talks about anything even close to relevant. Test questions come right out of the study guide...memorize it and you'll be fine.

This guy is an idiot. His class is easy though as long as you pay for his study worksheets. Just study straight from those and you'll pass. He just talkes about his own opinions and doesn't teach at all so just work on the worksheets in class. If you can stand his talking for 3 hours it's a rather easy class.
I mostly disagree with the bad rap the rest of the students give him. If you STUDY the study guide he gives YOU, there would be no problem about passing his class, come on! he gives you the answer to the questions he will be asking on the tests how easy is that! duh!
This guy is not a good teacher. Talks about his opinions for 3 hours, which doesn't match the homework assignment at all However, buy his study guide because that's EXACTLY where his tests come from. Only really need to take notes on what he says will be on the test. Study the study guide and you should be able to get a decent grade. Only have to do a paper if you need the points.

I took him last semester. The tests are directly from the study guide, which makes the lectures nearly useless. He goes off into random stories out of nowhere. He also makes a seating chart and takes role. Very opinionated, but if you tune him out and do the study guide in class, you should be fine.

Basically you go to class to listen to him ramble for a while and watch irrelevant videos. The test questions come directly from the study guides he gives out. If you just want an A and can easily memorize t/f, m/c, and fill-in questions, take this class. If you want to learn, too bad! He's the only one who teaches Comparative Political Systems. =(
Dont take Mr. Salas. if you could memorise about 200 questions per section and can memories fill in the blanks and can stand him talking about his whole life than take him. This guy talks so much, but nothing about the material! He has study guides that are basically the notes and its question and answer form, the tests are directly out of that, the packets are usually thick, if your good at memorizing lots of questions, youll do good, otherwise, youll end up like me, an F on my transcript =(

ummm.... not a good teacher but it's not impossible to get an A. I got an A and didn't even study that much. Scan the multiple choice in the study guide, memorize the fill in the blanks, if you have a partially photographic memory you can get it in a couple rounds, if not, look it over 2 more times. Easy A
You will NOT pass Mr. Salas classes unless you complete and study the Study Guide. It's not necessary to take notes, because what is on the test is taking directly from the reading and the study guide. If you don't complete the study guide, you won't complete his class!! I had him or three different poli- sci coureses, & passed w/ Bs and As.

Lecture is completely irrelevant to Political Science. BY sitting in class, you'd think you were in a theology course because all he talks about is being Catholic and how it effected his childhood. I took his winter session and got a B,BUT it was a lot of work. He is a good teacher, funny and likes to get a little off topic. You need to be in class and KNOW the study guide. Don't even bother attending lecture, his test questions ALL come from the STUDY GUIDES. I recommend keeping on top of the study guide because it is about 200 questions total for EACH test. Other than that the class should be a sinch.

I took the online class. Exams were easy, so long as you read the chapter - however; he never answered students questions on the discussion board after saying he'd visit twice a week and some exam questions were marked wrong when you really got them right.

His tests are insanely hard for his online class. He asks questions about tiny details that nobody is going to memorize and completely ignores the big-picture concepts that people should actually learn in an American Government class. Avoid this guy at all costs and take Conforti's class instead.

Stay away!!!! He doesn't teach the class very well! He just talks about his life, and other stuff that dont have to do with anything regarding the class. I Dropped it because he was very difficult, this was the first class that I have ever dropped. His test are long, hard, there are multiple fill in the blank questions and gives you 45 min. to take

All the class is memorizing the study guides, If you do and memorize the study guide you will get an easy A, he doesn't care about attendance, he said it himself, and his test are exact replicas of the study guides, and gives them all in the beginning of the semester

He is really hard!I took this class online. The study guides are very long.I printed it out and it came to 9 pages for one exam!I have a feeling the online class was MUCH harder.The study guides had questions like "what are your thoughts" or "what do you know" and if you dont study the right thing you will not know the answer when u get to the exam

Do not take him.The study guide was very long and very hard.But that isn't even why you shouldn't take him. His lectures have nothing to do with what he tests on. His tests are based on memorization rather than understanding the concept. I would not recomend this class for anyone!
If you're taking the class for an easy A, then this class is it. All you have to do is fill out the questions from the packets and memorize - the unit test is exactly like the packets. The professor talks about politics, but it's mostly opinionated and the discussions are not on the test. Be prepared to be bored if politics aren't your thing.
Typical liberal ranting professor. Lectures on actual material for about 10 minutes, talks crap on anyone who disagrees with him for the rest. He is also fond of making it sound like anyone who disagrees with him is a total & complete idiot with 0 brain functioning capacity. But what else is to be expected from State run education?
Well his lectures are pretty much useless. About 90% percent of his lectures are completely off topic. I wouldn't recommend this teacher to anyone.
It's an extremely easy class. do the study guides and then memorize them and it will be a sure A. He does get off topic most of the time, but his lectures if you pay attention have some good points.
This is honestly not a hard class. people complain how his lectures are useless, these are the same people who are scoring below average because they are too lazy to read the chapters. He gives study guides and the tests are the exact same thing as the study guide. if you want an easy A take his class. he is kind of funny as well.,
The Class is easy, but the Mr. Salas teaching ability is very limited. Most of his lectures don't have to do for what's on the test. One simply needs to memorize those study guides. Attendance is mandatory, but it shouldn't because its simply a waste of time to go. Mr. Salas really needs to find a new teaching method. I do not recommend him.
He doesn't teach whatsoever. He lectures his opinions on political issues and once in a great while will talk about something semi-related to what you might have on an exam. Attendance in mandatory, and he takes it before class starts, and after breaks to make sure students return. DO NOT ASK questions, he will humiliate you entirely.

I took his class eighteen years ago and he has not changed at all. He is very strict! Also, the amount of homework he assigns is ridiculous! He thinks that you are only taking HIS class.
This teacher sucks. He has over 40 pages of study guides per 75 question exams. So we get about 500 questions to study for when we only are tested on 75 its ridicilous. On top of that he sure likes to comment on the fact hes not gay lol anyone know what im talking about! DO NOT TAKE HIM UNLESS YOU WANT A HEADACHE AND WANT TO FAIL. You wont learn!
More concerned with forcing his political opinions down your throat than teaching. He lectured for entire classes about his veiws, none of which were on the tests, and left out important information that was on tests. If you do not read the book very carefully you wont pass

If your poli sci majors and value your education in any shape or form take this class somewhere else. Attending his class reminded me of the times when my mother made me go to sunday school,utterly useless but you HAVE to go. Make sure you let him know when your tardy too. Do that and those long study guide and you have an easy A.

I'm taking his online class and it was terrible.He gives you 4 tests with 100 questions and you only get 60 minutes to finish them. The study guides are long and his tests focus on little details no one pays attention to. Very useless class. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!
Class is very difficult if you dont use the study guide. I relied heavily on answering the questions in the study guide (using the book to help) and very little on the notes from class. If you can ace that study guide, you`ll get an A in the class. I got an A, with no sweat.
Lectures are nothing like what is on the test because he tends to go off topic a lot.His class is mandatory though.If you miss up to 4 classes he drops you and 2 tardies=1 absence.He gives you huge study guide packets with exact questions on the test.He gives all the odd answers but you have to find all the odds yourself in your textbooks.

One of the worst classes I've ever taken. He never answers your questions and he rarely makes scene. Off the wall discussions and hand written overhead notes make this class boring and difficult to navigate. Mr. Salas is a nice guy but save your self the semester and take someone else.

This comment applies to POSC 100 online course. The whole course consists of four curved online tests based on assigned chapters of the book. You must check in online twice a week or get dropped. This course is quite easy if you're literate. If you need your hand held don't expect to pass and certainly don't expect to get past your associates.
DO NOT TAKE! He has you check in online twice a week, you have to read the whole text book, and doesn't assist you in any way online with questions. He is very short and rude in his answers back and expects you to take a 50 question test on HISTORY with long questions in 60 minutes. Very hard and unrealistic with his expectations.
The test are exactly what he gives out on the study guides. His lectures don't cover ANY of the material on the test so you have to read!If you follow the readings you'll do fine. I got a B. Could have gotten an A if I stuck with the reading in the beginnig
He is very nice and if you make the effort to communicate with him, helpful. His class is fairly easy if you keep up and read the text. Id recommend him, he uses a very fun textbook too...

Believe the overwhelming poor ratings for this class. It is ridiculous. Lecture is 90% his talking about his views on politics, absolutely nothing about the material we are studying. About 10% is material lecture...10%!! What a waste of class time.

Class is easy. He's okay, a bit strict with attendance and use of phone in class but other than that, I like him.
The tests questions are exactly what is used on the study guides. T/F multiple choice and short answer. He gives you study guides AND a review day where he tells you exactly what is on the test! Write what he tells you what's on the exam and use your study guides to circle what topics will be on the exam and you will be in good shape!
Just do the study guides copy/paste short answers to a different word doc so u can memorize and you'll be fine. Start early on those! The class is only an hour long. Easy! He tells you what exactly will be on Test on your test review day!
Horrible, he talks for 15 minutes then you watch a video. Everything is completely irrelevant DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!! The only positive thing is his tests are verbatim to the study guides.
Talks a lot about info irrelevant to the subject but tests are straight off the study guide, you may hesitate to take him seeing all these negative comments but he is a jokester too. Shouldn't be hard to get a good grade at all.
Honestly if you don't pass it's your own fault. Just do the reading and study guides and you'll be fine. Don't leave anything to last minute. You can sleep during lecture and still get an A. Just make sure you're always in class on time.
Very easy class, just memorize the study guides and you'll get an A. Although attendance is mandatory, you don't need to pay attention during lectures at all. The hardest part of the class is trying to stay awake during the many boring videos he brings.

If you are good at memorizing take his class. Do the study guides and study them early you should pass no problem. I dont know about online classes but I heard its hard.
Worst professor I have had at FJC. I learned nothing all semester which sucks because I am a poli sci major. If you want to learn anything then avoid him at all costs. A kid in my class actually withdrew because Salas made him feel so terrible about voicing his opinion. Easiest class I have ever had though. Tests are identical to the study guides.

The class consists of 4 tests. Professor provides very lengthy study guides and only tests on small portion of it. He provides odd answers but the guides are so large that finding the even answers is very time consuming. He is rude not helpful. Be prepared to teach yourself the whole semester. Avoid him.

I was in his online course, which is ONLY 4 tests, no hmwk/assignments. Make sure you know when the tests are and get work off. I thought it was the day after. He would not let me take intone day late, ignored my emails for more than a week and suggested I TRY FOR a C!! Thats 100% to get a 75 in this class. Thank u for wasting my time
I just took this class fall 2012..I do NOT recommend him as your teacher! His voice puts you to sleep & all he does is lecture, no notes on board just his overhead projector notes ( which are super sloppy) he gives 4-5 exams and thats it. do NOT take him. Save yourself.

This class is SUPER easy AS long as you do the study guides- Keep in mind the study MANDATORY but treat it as it is because all test questions are based off the study guides! During test time MEMORIZE the fill in the blanks, one test I got every one right and I aced that exam- This class would be excellent as an online course STUDY GUIDES ARE KEY!!

His Study guides are useless...took his online class during summer...must read all materials in a week and take 100 question test in an hour.FYI we started with 44 students, at only 22 remained in class and no one got an "A"

CLass is not easy. He has study guides but exams are 50 questions and you are study guides have at least 300 to 400 questions which can get you confused.On the exams he takes points away everyrtime you write whatever on the fill in part. I don't hate him but I've only got A's and B'.s for the past 4 semester and i got a C on his say goodbye weeends

Tests are taken directly off of study guides that you print. The day before the test he tells you about half of the questions from the test. He also gives a final that replaces the lowest grade on a previous test. Lectures are awful, honestly, but it's worth it. Just suffer through his off topic rants, and do the study guides, and you'll be fine.
Keep in mind while taking this course you will learn absolutely nothing about the government. He just rambles on and on about how bad the government is and how his democratic views are the only proper views to have. You won't learn anything in this class. Just do the packets he gives you, memorize the questions then answer them on the test

Mr. Salas is very passionate about politics. He may not seem like he teaches during his lectures but show up, pay attention, he gives you all of the answers, study and you will get an A. If you aren't ready for the discipline of being in college don't take this class. I work full time and go to school full time and still got an A!

AVOID PROFESSOR.You take a total of 4 exams and is exactly like the study guide. However, the study guides per exam have at least 350-450 things you need to memorize if you want to feel confident about about exam. So youre not actually learning anything. His lectures are 75% irrelevant. I plugged my ears to block him and do the work myself.

This teacher is very thorough. There is NO PROBLEM getting an A in this class if you listen to his lectures and memorize the study guides. I had no problem! I work 10 hrs a day AND took this class during the summer. Study, listen and it's an easy A. I learned a lot and was VERY THANKFUL for his study guides. He is a very intelligent man.
I took this class online and it is difficult!!! Not easy at all. There's a lot of study guides and power points and I really didn't find them helpful. The exams are 100 questions in an hour! Ridiculous! I spent a whole day studying for the exam and didn't even score half of the exam. Good luck with this instructor.
Absolutely horrible professor. I can't believe they let this JA teach, let alone be on campus. All he does is ramble on about his left winged views. He even bashed a Iraq Vet in class. Tests and lectures are all irrelevant and he only bashes conservative the whole time. I wrote a nice little letter to the dean about this guy. AVOID!
I was so excited to take this class and it ended up being the worst class I've ever taken. Read the book, memorize the study guides. Go to class and fall asleep; it makes no difference. His lectures matter nothing to the test, because the tests are verbatim from the book. He talks forever, and doesn't allow a lot of discussion. Just bring a pillow.
There are 4 exams, no homework and your entire grade is based on passing your test. He has about 5-8 review packets on line PER test but he chooses questions out of each 60 question packets. Unless you have time to remember 480 answers for each test than you might pass. Sidenote :only 4 from about 90 students passed his class.
I got what i expected, a 4 test only online General Education course. The overall grade depends on the average of 4 exams taken off campus online. The professor gives very specific details on when and how to take the exams. If you fail, you should feel awful, thinking must be difficult for you, and coloring is probably your only career option.
The class is divided up into four tests. Read the textbook and review the study guides and passing is easy. Online you can find Quizlets where people posted the study guide answers; review those. New textbook editions only apply to questions about Obama and stuff. The lectures are boring and useless, but spend the time reading and it's fine.
No papers, discussions, or essays--just 4 100 question tests and notes to read, which he probably prepared years ago. There is basically does no instruction for the online class, and insults you if you ask too many questions. NOT how a poli-sci class should go AT ALL. Took POSC 100 Online. Class only consisted of 4 exams and nothing else. These exams were like 100 questions each but you only got 60 mins to take them, so I usually never finished. Not forgiving if you miss a test but the grading scale is really generous. The lowest grade for a C is 62%. 40 out of 67 passed my class.
Test are tough but you know what to expect as you just memorize a long study guide. Now if you want to actually learn and debate and are interested in politics. This guy is a partisan political hack. I had a different opinion than him on the financial crisis and he said "you just believe that because you're white," and then went onto the next guy.

Mr. Salas speaks the truth and emphasizes on critical thinking. He shows us how to not to trust the rhetoric that is shown on news channels at times or said by politicians (particularity the ultra right-wing) I have learned that facts are often twisted to fit a certain politicians agenda. The majority of us Americans are uninformed about politics
I refused to go into the class believing the things I heard and read about on this site, but the first day he proved every rumor correct. The lectures have little to nothing to do with the material and are filled with him own, very apparent, often offensive, opinions. Bring a book or a pillow. Tests are pulled from his study guides verbatim.
I took the Spring 2015 online course and read the book without taking detailed notes for the first exam and ended up with a C but learned from my mistakes for the three subsequent exams and easily got Bs and As. Memorization of good detailed notes and the study guides makes an A for each testclass very doable.
This subject can be a bit tough and his long and irrelevant lectures do not help. If you have the opportunity to take this class with another professor, do it! Or memorize your lengthy study guides and you will fly with passing colors!
Online, 4 tests, nothing else. State-mandated government class is a joke. There are plenty of flashcards online. Use them. Tests are easy if you mindlessly choose the answer that most resembles a Democratic party talking point. Professor had no interaction with the online class, which is probably best.
Even from someone who agrees with him politically I must say he is extremely offensive (mostly homophobic) and as for his teaching he doesn't do much. He rants for hours without actually teaching the content. There are long and opinionated study guides that he uses directly for the tests, know those and they will be your teacher.

Get ready to read A LOT, or be smart and get 99% of the answers from a useful website ( I won't name it). Why do this? Because Mr. Salas' lectures are 1% useful information and 99% ranting about how much he hates Republicans. His test are EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE STUDY GUIDES. Just practice about 200 Q's before each test and it will be and easy A.
Don't buy the book. Don't read. Don't listen to his annoyingly biased lectures. He takes test questions exactly from the study guides, so just find all the answers on Quizlet and study them. Its possible to get 100% by doing this. If you want to really learn, don't take him. Other than that, it was pretty easy to memorize Quizlet. Only 4 tests.
Don't take this class with this professor. Lectures are terrible. He talks mostly about his opinions and his life. Barely talks about actual material. If you have to take his class, find the answers to his study guides online, and not the book. There is just to much material to study without his help during lectures. $130 on books I never used.
I'll be straight up, I've taken 4 of his courses (POSC 100, 120, 215, and 230) and got A's in all. The grade is based on fourfive exams and a make up exam on the last day of class. If you're lazy, DON'T take this class. Other than that, no reason why you can't pass (C is 65%-79%). Book is a must (prefer online text). EXAMS MIRROR THE STUDY GUIDE!
if you want a professor who rants all day long, teaches nothing, expects you to read, memorize and comprehend "study guides" which are roughly a total of 350+ questions in a matter of a couple weeks along with fill in the blanks that have 10 blanks per question... then take this class i do not recommend this guy for any full time workers

If you memorize EACH of them AND ALL of the fill-in portions then you will get an A. Test is composed of the study guides. Test is composed of the study guides!!! This professor is a joke. He's self absorbed, biased, and doesn't care about our actual absorption of the material. I've never paid attention in a single class. Literally just complete and MEMORIZE THE ENTIRE STUDY GUIDE for each chapter and you'll ace him. My major is political science so unfortunately I'm forced to take him for multiple classes.
His tests are 100% based on the reading. He will even tell you himself that his lectures are completely irrelevant. Do the study guides ans there is no reason to fail. Super easy class, super bad prof. You can miss 6 classes without him dropping your grade.
I started this semester taking his on campus class but he allowed me to switch to his online class. I'd recommend taking his on campus class if you want the tests to be JUST LIKE THE STUDY GUIDES. I DONT RECOMMEND his ONLINE class if you aren't prepared to read and DO THE STUDY GUIDES. His online tests aren't the exact same as studyguides but close

A LOT of studying, but it is so easy to get an A+ if you do it. memorize all of the questions on the study guides and you'll get 100% on the test (there is always a curve). he talks about his opinion a lot, but its a good one. gets boring though.
Ricardo if you read this know that I like you as a person but I do not appreciate you as an instructor. You do not lecture, you go on rants that span different subjects including ufos. this man will not teach you anything, you will read the pages assigned and fill out the study guides. 4 exams - thats it... go through his study guides as he pulls directly from them on the exam. Attendence is mandatory but paying attention will not benefit your grades. Rambles about current events rarely tying them into concepts we are currently learning. Study guides are too long to fit into one pre exam cram session so work them early.
In the Online Class there are only 4 tests and that is the only credit to receive. The tests are 100 questions and you only have 60 minutes to finish them. Its not enough time unless you know every answer right away. He is terrible at explaining his grading criteria and shows little to no empathy for students, and treats you like an idiot.
Salas as a person is funny and has a great personality, but that is as far as it goes. I wouldn't recommend him to my worst enemy as a professor. I have never had a professor who went over lecture material only about 3 times out of the entire semester. He doesn't cover anything other than his extreme hatred for Trump. Don't take this class!!
Took his POSC100 online course Fall 2016. Did my reading, read his study guides, viewed his PowerPoints and still barely passed the class. All 4 of his tests were conceptually based rather than factual recall based. Website crashed on me during my final, when I asked for help he told me he was going on vacation and could;t do anything for me.

Ok. So when I took POSC 100 OL1 with Ricardo Salas , I did terribly on the first Exam. USE AND FILL OUT THE STUDY GUIDES ON HIS SCHOOL WEBSITE AND YOU WILL BE FINE. This professor does not give homework but gives 4 Exams . If you take the online course, expect this to be a very independent class where you're pretty much on your own.

First off, avoid this professor like the plague. His lectures are very unfocused, oftentimes talking about how bad Trump is, how ridiculous religion is, how bad the republicans are. He very rarely covers anything that is on the tests. Regarding the tests, the first one was about 75 questions, but the study guides... expect to have about 40 pages.
Lectures dont help, his notes r chicken scratch. If you want to pass this class all you have to do is finish the study guides and memorize them, but they take forever to finish and its a lot of material to memorize. Pulls questions directly from the study guide onto the test. Attendance is required, easy A if you memorize the SG. Buythe ebook trust
One of the worst teachers I have ever had. He's extremely opinionated in lecture, and usually factually inaccurate. He comes off as incredibly biased and ignorant within his own field by doing some light google research of his statements/facts. Get the study guides off his site, study them in class, you'll get an A.
Lectures were kinda of dreadful only because I'm not interested in the subject, but the class wasn't bad. Took it in the summer and really all you have to do is complete the study guide and memorize it for test. Couples days before the test he will mention most of the specific questions that will be on the test from the study guide.
Salas has been the absolute worst prof I have ever had. Every class he rambles on about Trump and completely disregards the subject of this class, IR. Nothing he says in class will help you on your tests. Each test has about 5-7 study guides w/ about 50 questions each. Do them or you will NOT pass your tests.
Take this class if you don't mind teaching yourself the material. Make sure you do ALL of the study guides!!! They are time consuming but you can always work on them during class while he lectures. Record his reviews with your phone. He lets you know which questions he will pull from the study guides for exam. SG are time consuming so start early
An absolutely horrible professor who doesn't know his own subject material. The fact that this guy is still teaching is an embarrassment to Fullerton. All he does is rant about politics and doesn't teach anything about international relations, but he makes attendance mandatory. Got an A by teaching myself. Doesn't care about students at all.
Nice man and very critical thinker. That being said, he probably has no concern for students. As many mentioned, his lectures review the material for the first 10 minutes of class, then become rants about his family or religion, nothing to do with the class at all. When questioned why, his response was "I have tenure." Study guides are key.
If you rate Salas as difficult, you clearly don't understand his grading. Ignore everything he says in class, just show up. Do the study guides in class. Study the study guides. That's 100% of what the classes is graded on. It's an extremely easy A. If you take him online, fill out the study guides, and you're good to go.
All he does is ramble on and on about random things that he CLAIMS are related to the text. But they hardly ever are. What's worse is that he's self aware of this and often cracks jokes about it but does NOTHING to fix it. Two major things you wanna do to pass his class: -Study the study guides -Go to class (attendance does affect your grade)
Hes a good man but as a professor, skip. Lecture is heavy &has nothing nothing to do with test material. Yeah, you can probably pass with just studying the study guides because they are the same as the exams but there is atleast 40-50 pages for each exam to memorize and half of the exams are fill in the qs with 8 blanks for each question.
This class is hard you need to be really self motivated, it's a lot of reading and doing study guides. Your whole grade is based on 4 tests that's it! and they are 100 questions to be answered in 60 minutes. But the professor sends helpful info through out the semester and is always helpful is asked. If you do the work you will pass.
Took this class my first semester of college a few years ago and dropped it. Lectures were complete nonsense and were often about stories from his childhood that were neither entertaining or relevant to the course material. He was not approachable regarding grades the grading scale and was quite defensive.

Don't be messed up. The man is doing his job just fine. Do the study guide and study off of the study guide and you will do for an A. You put in the effort you pass, don't blame it on the teacher. You learn you learn, if not you fail. Easy as that.
I took Professor Salas for POSC 120, 215, and 230. He is without a doubt one of the best professors I've ever had. If you want to pass, all you have to do is complete the study guide, memorize it and pass. It's an easy A. Other than that he's hilarious, he has strong views which makes class interesting. If you want an easy grade, take him.
Worst teacher ever!! avoid this guy, he doesn't teach. He'll give you 5 study guides each with 40 questions that might be on the test. If you wanna pass his class then you must buy both books and read them to find the answers to the study guides
He isnt necessarily hard... but doesnt help much. Rather he discussions are about political things isnt helpful. HARD AF for a Intro/100 level class. COMPLETELY on your own with no guidance.. this is the class for you. The material isnt necessarily hard but there is a lot of reading... and you have to retain it for tests.
