Pretty funny guy... his midterm was tricky.
He's a pretty funny guys and easy to follow. He keeps you relatively interested and sometimes goes on humourous little tangents. I would recommend his class. Probably one of the better profs i've had
I took his course in the summer. He knew his stuff and kept the dry material as interesting as it could be for csc225. Rich realized it was summertime and took it easy on us. He admitted he'd rather be golfing.
Really nice guy, boring subject. Did his best to keep us interested. Not too organized, lectures like he's carrying on a conversation, perhaps better in a one-on-one situation? Good at explaining tho. Labs for this class are a pain in the butt. (Note: he's actually a grad student, not a prof...)
Rich is a sweetie! He's a good teacher and inserts his personal life every now and then - ask him about the time that he tried to communicate with a computer that was supposed to speak back to him. Awesome guy, not a prof, but he is better than some profs i have had!
Tries his best to keep us interested, even though this subject is boring. The TA is hot!
good teacher
This class was very boring if you regularly work with computers and simply never bothered to take a class. Rich did his best and usually had everybody laughing. If you need this course then Rich is your man.
I love rich! He is so nice, funny and down to earth. He makes lectures interesting despite the dull material. Talks to the class as he teaches rather than reading off slides or lecturing. He made the class funner than it was, labs were a lot of work and worth too little. Midterms were harder than expected but easy if you study. Recommended!
Easy course. Good prof. Go to class and labs and you will get an A.
What a great guy!
Awesome prof. I only took this course because it was a requirement. He made going to class fun and poked fun at the kids who didn't show up rather then take his anger out on the kids who did. Go to class because he tells you all the stuff that's posted that you really don't need to know. Labs are easy as long as you read them thoroughly.
He's got this quirky sense of humor and always inserts his personal life into lectures. I swear he uses his children against us sometimes ... Definitely had some good times in CSC 105. He seems to really enjoy it when people actually say something in class!
I didn't come to lecture often. But for the few times I did, I can say that Rich is a great prof, he makes the material interesting and he's pretty funny. Put the work in and you shouldn't have any problems. I dreaded the labs, but they actually turned out to be fun and informative. If you have to take this class, take it with Rich Little!
Some of the lectures are dry but Rich has a good sense of humour to liven them up. He is very approachable so make sure you ask his questions in class! He will appreciate it. The lab portion of his course was incredibly useful. Make sure to do the practice exam questions in the txtbk and on the website.
Rich is the man..... you'll love him for sure!
my favorite prof to date. one of the most confident speakers i know.
So great!
Exactly what the other reviewers said. Boring lectures but he does try & he is humorous. V helpful if you go see him, & if you go to all classes, he is v fair with marking. Projects suck but I don`t think he has a choice. I wouldn`t hesitate taking him again, tho. Wear Leafs merchandise if you want to impress him, I`m not kidding.
Very funny and helpful. The lab assignments could be brutal sometimes but he did his best to clarify. As someone who does not enjoy computer science, I thought that he did a great job.
SUCH A BORING CLASS! Really nice and funny prof. I felt bad for him because he knew it was boring and tried to make it interesting but no one ever showed up. It's not a hard class though. Do the lab assignments early and do the readings. If you have to take this class take it with Rich.
Can't explain any concepts, assumes we learned it in first year. Avoid as much as you can. Too lazy, can't believe he gets paid to read out some other teachers slides to us.
Rich was great, he's super nice and friendly and his assignments and quizzes are fair. His writing on the board is bad but if you comment he will correct it. He also goes fairly quickly with a lot of his explanations and some of his slides are wrong (but he will, again, correct them).
Used another prof's slides, which were terrible, and was all over the place with both his explanations and his white board writing. Next to impossible to take notes in class, but the course content was short and straight forward. Nice guy though.
Great guy, not the best professor. Explanations of concepts weren't the best, but it was pretty easy material for the most part. Terrible writing on the board. Assignments were at a good level of difficulty. All negatives aside, this class is pretty slow and easy, you may as well have an entertaining professor for it!
The good: Rich is a nice guy first and foremost. Very approachable and willing to answer any questions. Exams, quizzes were very fair. The bad: Seemingly unprepared for lectures. Lectures often ended early and on multiple occasions he seemed to have literally no plan or agenda for that day's topics. Didn't feel like I got what I paid $600 for.
Rich is a good guy who prepared lectures, but only seemed slightly interested in the material himself. He doesn't like to speak to students outside of class, so don't bother saying hello to him on campus. Group projects were long and grueling. Exams were actually very easy, considering the types of material covered.
Nice prof but didn't seem super interested in the material. The group projects were frustrating because sometimes the hardest thing we had to do in it would be explained in lecture a day or two before the due date and so you'd just be left to figure it out. Felt kinda thrown to the dogs.
He is fun!!!
Good prof. Clear explanations, nice mix of overhead slides and blackboard. Seems like a nice guy. Pretty good for first time teaching this course, would recommend.
Really good prof. Course material was comprehensive, explanations clear and he motivated me to learn in this course. Also he's a fun guy, which makes it easier to get to the 8:30 classes. Impressed that this is his first time teaching the course.
Rich makes this course easy and fun, I learn a lot. There are many iclicker questions, but the participation is not very good. Slides are clear and the tutorial is useful. Great course as elective!
Did a good job of teaching CSC 349A. Test questions are similar in difficulty to the assignments but not as long. Assignments are very long with lots of MATLAB. He is a very funny teacher and does a good job keeping the students engaged. Would recommend.
Great prof, funny guy. Made the class really interesting. Great during office hours. Would take again.
Ok class, boring at times. Rich is pretty good though. Made a few mistakes with quizzes. Easy course, fair mark.
The content of CSC 349A is pretty dry, but Rich Little made it interesting. Funny guy. Always used up the full lecture time. Finished teaching the content early, which allowed for final exam prep in class, which was great. He does like to speak to students out of class, contrary to another post in here. Very clear explanations. Fair assignments&tes
This class was a little boring I must say, but I don't think it was the professor's fault. Rich Little likes to talk fast and his lecture notes don't contain that much information, so I highly advise you take notes on a computer. This class is also more difficult than one may presume, so as hard as it is to pay attention, PAY ATTENTION.
Awesome prof. The material for 226 was just about various algorithms and its super easy to follow. He posts everything online so you don't need to go but he's funny so its worth your while.
I took Rich for CSC 225 and CSC 226 and he is probably the best teacher I have taken at uVic. He is down to earth and has a good sense of humour and somehow is able to keep the class engaged on such a dry topic. He is very helpful during office hours. The midterm is usually hard, but the final exam for both classes I found was fairly easy.
Overall a great prof. I found the lectures to be quite boring, so i stopped attending... however participation is a good chunk of your grade and I could've done better if I attended more often. None the less, the class was fairly easy and can be an easy A if you attend class and pay attention.
Great prof, easy course!
great prof, very helpful in and out of class. read textbook for tests. encourages group projects. funny person and very caring
I didn't like him at first, but he really started to grow on me after I went to his office hours. He's super helpful when you come to him for help and his slides explain things really well. The assignments are pretty fair, but his 5 in-class quizzes (worth 1% each) were grade killers if don't keep up with the material. Overall, a good prof.
Rich had a few issues teaching this course as he was given it last minute, but he did well and tried to fix all issues that arouse.
Easy course, willing to help you succeed
Rich is an amazing prof. One of the best I have had in csc/math. Just make sure you never miss class and always approach him soon as you feel like you are struggling. I actually did not do well on 349A but it was just my fault for missing leactures. Rich will help get a great understanding and a good grade.
Easiest class ever.
Such a likeable, funny, and easygoing guy. Really solid prof too. He knows what he's talking about
Uvic needs more profs like him! He is one of the best profs I've had so far.
He made a class I was dreading to take interesting, engaging, and motivating. He adds great personality to his lectures and is very generous with helping you if you need it. He was patient and respectful whenever I needed assistance. He's a great prof.!
Only had Rich for one lecture when my prof was at a conference, but he made that one lecture of a BORING course so entertaining and bearable. His public speaking and audience engagement skills are incredible - but just be warned, he will lecture and yell while standing DIRECTLY in front of you, so if that makes you uncomfortable, sit in the back.
really friendly prof! really helpful in his office hour
Rich is the type of professor you'd want to grab a beer with after the final. Funny guy who can make the boring nature of CSC 349a more interesting. Assignments involve solving more difficult versions of examples you do in class, and making MATLAB functions. The midterm is like in class examples, so practice variations of the problems he gives you.
Very important to attend classes in order to pass. This course is lecture heavy and his examples are a life savior. His assignments are challenging but are able to give a good understanding of the concepts. Midterm was super hard imo. But a super funny prof
Solid, personable prof who can make relatively boring content engaging. His explanations are clear and only as complex as necessary. Tests and assignments are fair leaning to easy. Would definitely recommend. As others have said, make sure you go to his lectures.
Great prof
Rich is a neat guy, funny, helpful, and cares. He had 150 students in this class and still made his office hours seem unrushed and focused on helping you. The course is tough and super long, he didn't write it, but he cherry-picked the most important pieces and lectured on them, then tested on ONLY those pieces. Lots of hints before the exam!
I have taken two different classes with Rich, and although I am a dummy he always helps in a friendly manner and makes sure you get it. Material is hard, but Rich is doing his best for it not to look that bad. You may be suffering if you are not into discrete math. Taking one more course to have his lectures (+ credit, but mainly for teachings)
Funny but tough grader. He even said himself he would have marked more generously if he knew the whole class was going to fail but "oh well, it's too late for that now! Haha." Then a huge debate breaks out over the class with the prof about how questions were unfair and his reason for making unfair questions is bc "he's the prof." Yeah, you get it
Rich is really passionate about both the material and teaching. His lectures are easy to follow and really help get a good understanding of the material covered. I would definitely recommend him.
Caring is a key term when it comes to Dr. Little. He understands that students face many challenges in university and he helps them when possible. His methods are like no other; Informative, interactive, with a dose of banter, his lectures are captivating. I hope other professors take notes from Rich, as he is the best professor I've ever had.
Rich is the best computer science prof I've ever had. I had him for 2 classes and he made material which would normally be challenging to understand with other profs interesting and easy to follow. His lectures are SO GOOD that I barely had to study for tests when normally I spend 20+ hours studying because I'm not naturally smart.
Rich was a great prof, clear in explanations and the lectures were really helpful with regard to the material. Assignments and tests were tough but fair, and while he wouldn't give marks away easily, he was very fair in the grading and clear with what was and wasn't wrong. Would definitely recommend.
Rich handled the switch to online courses so well. His lectures were engaging and well thought out with clear explanations and lots of examples. He also provided a lot of extra resources (notes, practice questions/exams, etc.). He definitely put a lot of effort into the course and made it easy to do well. Funny guy too. 10/10 recommend.
This is my 5th year at UVic, and I think Rich is the best prof I've had. The material itself is not particularly exciting, but Rich's lectures are perfect. He explains things very clearly, and only tells you what you need to know. Plus, he's very entertaining.
Rich is a very nice man who tried really hard to make lectures not so boring. CSC 105 isn't the most fun class, but Rich really tried his best to make the class more enjoyable. Definitely recommend classes taught by Rich!
Funny guy, great prof.
Posts the wrong assignment and makes students redo them because of it.
This is his first time teaching this class online so we are his trial run. I would recommend not taking any class with Rich if it's online because he makes his exams very difficult. The class average for the midterm was around 60%, almost half the class failed, but Rich was happy because the average went up from previous semesters which as low 50s.
Rich has extremely clear lectures, answers questions well, and has clear grading criteria. He provides everything needed to do well on the tests and assignments and every word said is important. His assignments are heavily based on his lectures. Is strict in terms of student expectations.
He enjoys making students fail it seems. The grading of midterms is ridiculous. Denies accommodation. Doesn't seem to care in general.
Taking this online was brutal. Everyone in the discord just wanted to pass the class because a good grade is improbable. The midterm was very difficult, we were given 4 hours to do a 50mins exam and most people took the full 4 hours. Rich is a good prof but not just for online format as he makes everything extra difficult, the mean is 72%
Great lectures. Went over the material slowly and answered everyones' questions. The midterm was tough but you could get through it if you did well on the assignments. Overall pretty fair I think.
I've had Rich as a prof in person for other classes and online for this one. My best advice: don't take an online class with Rich. He's one of the best profs in lectures but online format doesn't suit him. The B I got was a struggle. Probs the class I spent the most time and effort, all my other classes were negatively impacted due to this
If I could sum up Rich in one word it would be mediocre. He's fair and is very knowledgeable about every topic he teaches. His issue is laziness and becoming jaded from teaching. Short and rude in emails, threatens your mark will be lower from a regrade, and really does the bare minimum outside of lectures. Just meh, not good or bad.
I have now taken 2 courses with Richard Little. He is a straight forward man, makes boring topics more exciting in lectures. Exams can be tough but fair. He provides an abundance of resources and always answers questions, bluntly sometimes, but an answer is an answer. I really respect him as a professor and person, he really knows his stuff.
Rich Little understands that live examples are needed and does an amazing job at simplifying and explaining complex topics covered in numerical analysis.
- Creates custom lecture slides, supplementory notes AND handouts (for walking through concepts) + recordings - Provides plenty of examples (real-life and theoretical) - Great pacing for lectures - Assignments are harder than midterms (but reasonable). Absolute legend. One of the best profs I've taken.
Rich Little is the best professor I've experienced. He made every detail of the materials crystal clear and I didn't feel like asking any questions after class as everything had been well explained. Take his courses and you won't regret.
Very mediocre. Lectures are dry and he often makes mistakes while working through examples. Assignment grading criteria is sometimes unclear, leading to marks being deducted for reasons that I consider unfair. As for the class itself, prepare to witness several proofs that feel unrigorous and hand-wavey. Midterm and final were fair, though.
Good Prof.
Rich is an amazing professor and one of the best profs I've ever had! Explained all the concepts very clearly and all the assignments and exams were fair. His lectures were amazing (although his writing is a bit messy). I learned a lot in this class and I would absolutely take Rich again!
Good prof, good lectures, good materials but the guy doesn't give part marks, he says he doesn't but it's a lie.
Lectures would be better if he used proper software instead of something equivalent to ms paint. Funny too. 1000% better than Zastre.
The only thing holding me back from giving Rich a five point rating is his handwriting. Now, that may sound petty on my part, but when you're trying to read his slides the night before an exam you'll see where I'm coming from. Otherwise, he's a good prof and a great lecturer!
One of the best profs I've ever had. Rich stays after EACH lecture (sometimes for more than 30min) answering everyone's questions. You basically get a bonus office hour after each lecture. He also explains really well and cares about students' alternative ways to solve problems. Very good prof, 10/10.
tests and assignments were difficult and graded toughly but he's an amazing teacher.
The assignments are not really difficult to complete. For his midterms and final, we are allowed to bring calculator and cheatsheet which is awesome. His first midterm was really hard, but the second was much better. I would recommend to take 349A with him if you are interested in math
On the first day of class, Rich seems like a serious person but actually once know him more, you realize that taking this course with him is a breeze. The assignments are super easy because he provides plenty of resources on BrightSpace for you to review. Exams are easy/doable if you practice past exam questions. Overall, I recommend him!
Pretty much one of the GOATs @ UVic - I would take any class with him as the instructor. Stayed after each lecture for an extended amount of time just to chat and help students with anything really. Cared about the material and the students. Ignore what everyone has to say about him being a "tough" marker - he is extremely fair above all else.11/10
Fair marker and entertaining in lecture
good prof with excellent lectures, tests and grades fairly.
Very relatable personality. He makes the material quite easy to understand, and me marks very fairly, though in an unusual manner. Great guy, good lectures, engaging, and understanding.
Decides to come up with his own marking scheme based on how he is feeling that day. He does not care about your steps to the question, all he seems to care about is the final answer. This is not fair in a math class as in every other math course at UVIC they give you part marks based on your rationale.
His lectures were very informative. As long as you pay attention in lecture and ensure you understand the material, the assignments and tests were straightforward and not very challenging. His grading schemes are very abundantly clear, and he builds automatic concessions in so you do not need to ask for them, they are given automatically.
Engaging lectures, but be prepared for a tough grader. Attend class, use Unstuck study for study prep, and you'll learn a lot from this professor.
The midterm was very unfair.. the class average was 56%. Yet Rich decides not to adjust marks or consider that he wrote a bad midterm. Questions on the exam are quite different than those you get the most practice on in quiz/lab/assignments. Studied a lot and got ~40%. His lectures are good otherwise, labs, quizzes, assignments are fine. Exams..no
Pretty poor overall, in class lectures were not upto the mark with what the midterm expected. Class average was 56% for the midterm and grades were not curved. Teaching style can be intuitive but lecture slides are terrible so if you miss a lecture you better hope you have someone to give you notes. Overall, study DSA from youtube its better.
Lectures are very engaging and I would argue against other reviews saying the midterm was unfair. The test he gave had questions almost directly from the notes and assignments. It's a hard course but he covers topics clearly and there's a lot of material to study from. Overall, one of the best profs I've had all year.
He is an amazing instructor. It's super important to utilize his office hours, but overall Dr. Little is an incredible professor and I wish all of my professors are like him.
