Amazing teacher, really enthusiastic and funny, even if it is about earthquakes. Great lecturer and has cute British accent. Class is relatively easy if you do your assingments, don't worry too much about midterms.
Great teacher and very helpful. Explains things in an easy to understand manner.
Got me interested abt earthquakes..
cute british man. had some problems with the homework policy in this class. lectures are alright but the textbook is incredibly boring - but uh, read it. it really helps on tests.
Very good. Fun. Good for a intro class. reallly interesting. This is the New Nutri Sci 10. It is kinda scarry though because you learn about how you might die in a quake. Allen is very clear and uses class website effectivly. Best Prof. I've had so far.
Cute British professor. Really interesting material considering we're in a seismic area. Class was a little harder than expected. Make sure you get a GSI that speaks English and is easy. Homework can be a little hard. Easy, multiple choice exams. Students should definitley take this class
I didn't go to a lecture after the 4th week and I still somehow managed a Pass in the class. The assignments are easy, the midterms are doable with a little studying of the lecture note and the field trips were manageable. You really don't have to go to your assigned GSI time either. This class was a little interesting, but I didn't learn that much
most of the stuff you learn in lecture. helps to print out the slides then jot down notes. class isn't really that hard. the hw is slightly difficult but manageable. there isn't too much reading but you don't really need to read. know every single detail on the lecture slides and you'll do perfect on the exams.
Not as easy as you think. I went into this class thinking it was an easy way to fulfill the physical breadth, I was wrong. The class involves some difficult tests and assignments. Still, the class was interesting.
Great lecturer. Have to pay very close attention to lectures and take good notes because the exams hit some details that you may miss easily. Exams weren't that easy and assignments were kinda long, but all manageable. Learned a lot about earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis. Oh, and not to move into a soft story building.
best class ever.
My only wish is that I had changed my grading option to P/NP. Although the hw/assignments were off-the-charts easy & I had a solid A early on, the 2nd midterm REALLY hurt my grade. Now I'm borderline B/B- for a class that's not even required for my major. Lame. But otherwise, take this class. It's podcasted, easy to follow, and the teacher is nice.
Great professor, interesting class, midterms and final are difficult though. curve helps a lot
Great Professor. ESP 20 requires a lot of small, simple assignments. Just make sure to keep on top of all of them, for the missing points really add up and hurt. Go through lecture notes for finals/ midterms. They help the most. Take good notes on the field trips.
One of the best classes I ever took at Berkeley. Awesome professor. super nice and a very interesting class indeed. highly recommended
Fantastic teacher!! 5 stars. He encourages class question (great!), he is not a whacked out liberal (is he a US citizen?), has a cool British accent, LOVES his subject matter, is friendly, and is very very helpful. I highly recommend this class. If you don't want to be indoctrinated in your general ed's, take Prof Allen! You'll learn a lot :)
Allen is a cool guy who loves his earthquakes. He has the best powerpoints and class website I've ever seen. He posts his podcasts online which is really helpful. The GSIs are all amazing too! There's only one assignment that's difficult, but you have ample time to get help.
Overall a very organized and clear lecturer. You do not need to read the book, but do listen to everything in lecture (or listen to podcasts). The only downside for me was that exams were fact- and detail-oriented, and I studied only major concepts. Do the extra credit, though you may not receive the full five points.
Very informative class. He's from England, so he likes the room really cold! Print out the lecture notes and take notes on them! very useful. Exams are very detail-oriented, so study hard if you don't have a great memory like me! But overall, the class was pretty interesting. Everyone should take it to learn about the growing concerns!
one of the best classes I've ever taken. Prof Allen is an excellent teacher and he makes the class extremely enjoyable and interesting...and he's cute too ;) the midterms are detail-oriented so you do have to study but the material isn't too hard and the amount is reasonable.
Allen is enthusiastic and the class is pretty good overall. Definitely not a complete "easy A" and requires some studying, but easier than most Berkeley classes. 2 hours of lecture and no discussion for 3 units makes up for the annoying field trips.
Incredibly intelligent, comedic and very obviously invested in the subject. Trouble was I simply couldn't find myself interested in the subject by nature, as earthquake science was made clear fairly early on to be a subject that couldn't be taught with certainty. Nonetheless, a good class.
great
Recently started teaching the course again and restructured his criteria. For a breadth course this class makes you really work for the grade. Also, there were so many readings, but they're all provided. Course stressed me out more than my major courses. I wouldn't suggest if you want an easy A, but if you're going to PNP then go for it.
Richard Allen is not a super easy A at all but his tests are very straight forward. I went to class 0 times but watched the lectures and never struggled on an exam
Thought this class would be sooo easy but then there was a professor change up. Richard really cares about what he's talking about but this class was not easy by any means. The material was confusing for non physical scientists but you don't have to go to class though. I had to P/NP but didn't have to do much work.
A great class and a great professor. Class was recorded and as long as you watched all the lectures and paid attention, assignments and tests were very easy. The mini quizzes were very easy. Lectures were very well done and interesting. Definitely an easy A if you attend/watch lectures. Highly recommend this class!
Dr. Allen is very knowledgable about seismology and is always ready to field questions, no matter how "dumb" they may seem. He is always enthusiastic even though students may not be. Great class: pay attention or re-watch a course capture and you should be fine. Probably the best class--3 units--to get the L&S physical science breadth over with.
Professor Allen is funny and is super fascinated by earthquakes. There are course captures that allow you to not go to his lectures. Really recommend re-watching his lectures before taking exams. Midterms and Finals are fair, GSIs are really helpful too.
Professor Allen is amazing! His class is actually pretty interesting, especially since he is quite clearly very enthusiastic about his work. The class is very easy, as the assignments don't require too much work. If you go to lecture and have a decent memory, you will get an A in the class. He also has an English accent!
Richard is the best!!!
RICHARD <33 made me love earthquakes so much, such a good prof, take him please!!
asynchronous class but made a lot of effort to keep certain synchronous zoom field trips. always available and EASY EASY class for physical breadth. learned a lot about earthquakes too v good class
I dislike science, but this is the best breadth course!! I learned a ton of important info also. Attendance not mandatory, but definitely watch the lectures. He's super helpful, passionate, and knowledgable, willing to answer any and all questions! I highly suggest taking this class.
Professor Allen is super enthusiastic and knowledgeable about what he teaches! He works hard to engage with all of his students and the lectures are always well-structured and never dull. A great class to take!
The BEST physical science breadth you can take!! Super knowledgeable, lectures are interesting and he was super accommodating to student's circumstances because of the pandemic! Highly recommend.
The nicest physical science professor Ive ever met at cal. He cares so much and is more than willing to accommodate and be flexible with you. The class is really interesting but you have to want to learn the material. The only negative is that assignments sometimes have really unclear grading policies and take a while to get back
Prof Allen is an amazing lecturer, EPSC20 is perfect for people who aren't very good at science, he was very understanding and accommodated coursework multiple times during the pandemic. Work is very easy, just stay on top of it and you'll be fine. I didn't do the readings and still passed. Just make sure you understand concepts and history.
Great professor!!!! He was willing to accommodate during the pandemic and workload is super manageable. Material was easy to digest and exams were pretty easy. I highly recommend this class to non-STEM majors. The one negative thing I can say is that feedback was not given on assignments and I was often unclear as to why points were taken off.
This class was organized well especially with online learning and the workload was very manageable and flexible to be done on your own time. This was a great physical breadth especially for those without much science background and lectures were relative and engaging.
Professor Allen is super funny and his passion for seismology makes you love it too. Class was an easy A, they give you study guides for all the exams and most of your grade comes from homework anyway. Loved the class!
His lectures a very interesting and very easy to follow. There is no discussion class and overall a good course to take in order to be prepared for earthquake safety. Midterm and final are multiple-choice and T/F. There are also short quizzes after every lecture (5 questions)
british king! richard was great, his lectures were super informative and I learned a lot! there's a lot of assignments, but they're fairly easy as long as you watch the lectures and he gives you a lot of time to do them. two exams (midterm and final) that are online and multiple choice, lecture quizzes too. overall just a really nice, caring guy
Please take this class! Very interesting and extremely easy. Find a good study group :)
Easy physical science breadth. He was passionate about the topics, even though many of the students weren't. Everything was online and could be asynchronous. Lots of busy work, but it's straightforward and doing well gives you a cushion if you're not strong in tests. Not a "rocks for jocks" class but still very easy if factual recall is your thing.
Loved Prof Allen! He's a nice guy who's very passionate about and involved in seismology. Earthquakes is a super chill class and an easy physical sciences breadth. Lectures are in person but also broadcast on Zoom, recorded, and posted later. Lots of assignments that aren't hard, just time-consuming. Online open-note midterm and final!
Easy fun class. Quizzes after every lecture so be sure to pay attention. Few projects and I actually learned something
Great class for a breadth requirement. Fun lecturer who's genuinely passionate about his work. He tries to make the subject matter relatable and relevant to the students. There are a good amount of assignments but all of them are straightforward and easy to do well on. Post-lecture quizzes are also easy as long as you paid attention.
Amazing professor. He is genuinely very passionate about earthquakes. This class is fairly easy if you pay attention to the lectures but they can be a little content heavy at times. There are a lot of assignments but they are graded easy based on who your GSI is.
Professor Allen's lectures are very insightful he is very knowledgeable in this area: you will definitely learn a lot from him. Assignments are mini-projects but are easy and entertaining to complete. As long as you follow along and take notes you should do well in the class. This class put an end to my fear of earthquakes!
Great class and a superb lecturer. Very passionate about his field, and makes content accessible to newcomers. The class format was easy to follow, and after each lecture, there was a small pop quiz, which is a great way to build your grade slowly. Midterm and final were super easy and online. Take this class for Allen, as he is super interesting.
A great class to learn about a very relevant topic to cal. Includes field trips, light material, and a good grade distribution.
Professor and GSI's were very understanding and kind. I took this class solely to full fill a breadth requirement and enjoyed it. Grade is mostly made up of weekly quizzes that are easily available on quizlet and easy assignments. Midterm and final.
Absolute g in the community, him and Mrinal got me a sense of immunity, from earthquakes, they now feel like frosted corn flakes, I would highly recommend, pink vette and I'm ready to bend, this course, because King Allen is a dawg and a horse I love EPS C20!
I took this class to fulfill the physical science breadth and I loved it! The professor is very passionate about what he teaches, which makes the lectures super engaging. The midterm and final exams are open-note, which is great, and there are small open-note quizzes after every lecture which helped me keep up with the material I was learning.
Prof Allen is amazing and passionate. lectures are engaging and interesting. mini-quizzes after each one. weekly or biweekly assignments that are usually pretty interesting. midterm and final are MC and online. Mrinal (gsi) is very caring and helpful 24/7 and holds review sessions. perfect breadth class, easy and interesting A. take it!
HE'S BRITISH!! love. He is extremely passionate about earthquakes which is so cute. There are a lot of assignments & quizzes after each lecture but they're all take home & fairly easy. Just keep up with the work & go to GSI's office hours bc they will actually help!! It is def an easier class to take as a breadth especially as a non stem girly.
really good lecturer--you can tell how passionate he is about the topic a bit slow at getting back grades for anything that isn't auto-graded and there won't be much feedback on any free response/essay assignments even if you lose points overall amazing breadth class & really easy to get an A if you try (pretty minimal homework + fair exams)
Really good guy.
Very passionate about his field and lectures well. Field trips are entertaining and learnt a lot in this class. Would take again!
So kind and intelligent. I learned a lot and stayed interested even though I'm not into STEM. You can watch the lectures from home but still get interactive assignments and even a fun field trip. A super relevant class, totally recommend!
love that he's British, it adds character. he's literally so passionate about MyShake and guys he met Gavin Newsom. We got a tsunami warning and it was the best day of his life. He's just a cool dude 10/10 reccomend :)
Great lecturer, funny charismatic guy who really knows what he's talking about class is more interesting then i thought, its great and easy, mostly online, and has extra credit by going to study sections, 10/10! would love all my breadths to be like this one
The best professor, cares about his students almost as much as he does with his app MyShake
Great guy! Engaging lectures that were super easy to follow. This class is really easy even for people with 0 STEM background and he makes it that way on purpose. He just genuinely wants us to learn about the subject rather than slamming us with unnecessary assignments and tests. There are assignments and tests but they help you learn & are easy.
amazing, caring, knowledgeable professor! super easy, chill class. i 100% recommend taking this course, especially if you're looking for an easy and interesting course to fulfill the breadth (even for non-stem people). super relevant information, easy extra credit, and very few assignments beyond the open note lecture quizzes.
Quizzes after every lecture, few easy assignments, final & midterm are online, open note, open book, not proctored. He's a very engaging and passionate lecturer and I say that as someone who's not a STEM person. Things he taught are very applicable irl!
super interesting and easy breadth class! lectures were easy to follow and are offered in person, online, or you can watch the recordings later. post-lecture quizzes, online midterm and final, and projects that are all super easy, open note, and on material taken from lectures. extra credit for attending group review sessions which is def doable!
Easy, relatively interesting class. Definitely recommend taking to fulfill a breadth! Weekly assignments (typically pretty short and simple) and lecture quizzes. Lectures were sometimes slow or tedious with seemingly obvious knowledge but makes for an easy A. Prof Allen is a funny, reasonable guy!
Very good class. Super easy. Great Professor. Class is formatted so it is extremely flexible. You can come to lectures in person, attend online, or watch async-ly. Discussion sections are basically review sessions. There are 2 field trips and quizzes after each lecture. Exams were online and all mcq. Good choice for physical sci breadth!
Everything in this class was pretty easy. Go to lecture and do all the assignments as written and you are pretty much guaranteed a good grade.
This class really is as easy as everyone said with a take-home midterm and final you are kind of guaranteed an A! He is also British which is fun.
this guy is my 13th reason. people take eps20 because it's all online, but a quarter to the end of the semester and past the grade change/drop deadline, bro CHANGED THE FINAL TO IN PERSON. he claimed it's because he suspected AI use since the midterm grades increased by 2% since last year BUT BRO CREATED AN AI CHATBOT FOR THE CLASS TO USE. not cool
He's good at explaining the concepts and also makes sure to address every question he gets. With that said, maybe don't offer an unproctored online exam to 'a handful of students' when the last minute format switch (was online on the syllabus until after P/NP deadline) to in-person was allegedly to prevent cheating?
Great professor in terms of knowledge and passion but inconsiderate of students sometimes. He did us dirty changing the exam format last minute after the drop/grading change deadline
Maybe a great prof before, but this semester, he changed the final format from online to in-person only three weeks before the final. And on the syllabus it says the final will be ONLINE!!!! I take this class online, but he still changed the final format, and if you have a time conflict, you need to take the final during RRR week, which is insane.
Warning: will not reply to a single email. Good professor, but changed the final to an in-person format last minute. Completely get why, but cost me hundreds of dollars to cancel flights and change plans (I had no in-person finals so was planning on traveling abroad the last weeks of school starting dead week.) don't plan ahead anymore I guess!
Genuinely must not give a crap about lives outside of class. we are at Berkeley, so obviously upon our 4 years here we will take an exam in person. We aren't stupid. To switch the format this last minute is genuinely evil, especially considering he created an AI chatbot then accuses his students of using AI. The call is coming from inside the house
I would have given him a 5 if he didn't pull the stunt that he did. It feels like he really chose not to listen or care about the students' feelings or needs and just wanted to throw his weight around.
I hope he realizes how much stress and pain he's caused to students. I've talked to many classmates, some of who are in DSP, who are struggling to manage with this sudden change. And he seems to not care at all beyond offering a test time during RRR week. Honestly was a great professor until he chose to do what he did.
initially, i believed professor allen to be a compassionate, easy to understand lecturer. however, he changed the online, open note final to in person, closed notes less than a month before the final. he has also been very unresponsive to the hundreds of students reaching out
cancelled online final last second when i already had my flights booked as per syllabus. straight up snaked me. be aware of this mess!
booooooooooooooooo
yes lets change the final format from open note online to close note in person after a bunch of people had already bought plane tickets. lets also ignore everyone's emails about this subject. lets double down triple down quadruple down about how this isnt unfair and how "it was never confirmed to be online" EVEN THOUGH IT SAID SO IN THE SYLLABUS.
just horrible. just horrible what he did to the entire class right before thanksgiving
I love this professor! I think hes so great- wait im going to change my answer even though i clearly stated i like him previously. im changing my answer 3 minutes before submitting my rating. i dont. and if you disagree, that means you support academic dishonesty. "It is disheartening that not everyone feels the same way."
I must be psychic or something. Switched to P/NP last minute and dodged a bullet I didn't even know was coming. Well guess Allen teaches more than just earthquakes - he teaches you that life is a mess of uncertainties and you gotta stay ready anytime, anywhere.
This class was all good, until he decided to switch the final exam format from online OPEN note to in-person CLOSED note. I am not sure how we are supposed to take a 90 question final exam with no notes, as all of our quizzes throughout the semester were open note. Additionally, on the syllabus it was stated that our exam was confirmed online.
I don't understand why worry and mess up over 700 students plans by changing the final to in -person at the last moment when you THINK there is some cheating. He just caused a bunch of students added stress for no reason other than a power trip.
crazy he was allowed to do what he did
irresponsible and not prepared
Professor and GSIs ignored student emails, concerns, showed little empathy to those with pre-booked flights, and overall caused a great amount of stress to students for a last-minute final exam format change. I have never seen such little concern towards students and will never recommend this class or professor to anyone again.
👎👎👎 i will not recommend anyone to take this class. i have to change my graded option at last minute. Worst class ever. NEVER take it! NEVER!
Worse instructor ever, changed the final from online to in person 2 weeks prior to finals. I have no clue how this was even allowed. Extremely unprofessional and I hope he understands how evil he is for doing that.
The final was changed to in-person and closed-note after the deadline to change grading options, which forced me to use a late pnp for this breadth. NOW, only a few days before the exam, the prof moved the final back online. Can't believe this sequence of changes is allowed under school policy...
Genuinely so messed up for doing what he did. Hate him so much.
i agree that this class is easy, but it was absolutely appalling for the professor to change the syllabus weeks before the final exam after he told us the entire semester the final would be online and then the final in person. also, as someone who registered to be strictly an online student this has just been incredibly frustrating.
OK class, except the professor changed the format of the final from online to in person, and a few weeks before the final, he changed it to online, but you have to go to the classroom to take it on ur laptop. Also, he randomly assigned seats for everyone after we arrived and were seated. Worst experience at berkeley.
The professor was pretty chill up until the last few weeks of class and seemed passionate about earthquakes. I liked the field trip and actually learned a lot about the subject. Quizzes were taken straight from the lecture. I just wish he didn't screw over possibly hundreds of students by switching the exam format to in person at the last minute.
Prof Allen is very knowledgeable in this area, willing to answer questions both during and after lectures, and a great lecturer in general. The class is truly inspirational, offering much, much more than what I expected when initially choosing it as a breadth course.
The class isn't too hard with weekly homework and quizzes. However, the professor pulled a total bait-and-switch at the end. Despite the syllabus promising an online, open-note final all semester, he changed it to in-person and closed-note just three weeks before the exam, even for those taking the async option. Be wary of the inconsistency.
wont reiterate what the bad reviews say, its ALL TRUE. let me just add that a GSI put memes and joked about the students who were genuinely stressed in their sections' presentation slides. heartless. this prof created an AI chatbot INTENDED to support his class, THEN CHANGED THE FINAL FORMAT BC MIDTERM GRADES INCREASED BY 2% SINCE LAST YR. bruh IHY
At the beginning, he seemed very chill and easy-going, until mid-semester. He bashed on AI use, but had an AI chatbox for this class? The final was misleading all semester long. The final exam was cumulative, 90 questions, and no curve. He stated, "If your eyes wander to the clock, I will ask you to leave, and you will receive an F in the class."
...... don't take this class ......
Prof. Allen is very knowledgable of the subject and is a good lecturer. The syllabus stated the exam would be open-note and online, but he switched it to in-person and closed-note a few weeks before the exam. I understand why, but the switch felt extreme. Learned a lot in this class but the sudden strictness of the final exam kind of threw me off.
This class is not hard in general, but when the class is labeled as online and allows schedule conflicts. He should not be able to change the final from online to in person closed notes right before dead week, when the whole class leading up to was online and midterms were open noted. Sucked at communicating when students reached out.
I was told this was an easy A online class. Workload was light, and exams weren't too bad, although the final was changed from online to in person last minute. I do feel bad that other students weren't able to communicate with him and didn't seem very reasonable to those who needed accommodations due to the change in the final.
Teacher is extremely unhelpful with him and all of his GSI's being extremely unresponsive to emails. He is extremely flippant with course policies and is prone to ignoring all previously stated rules. This semester he stated in the syllabus that it would be an online course only to switch the final to in person 2 weeks before. Extremely uncaring.
i'm torn. richard was truly great most of the semester and the class rlly is not difficult. however the last minute switch on the format of the final was extremely inconsiderate. the syllabus was very clear about an online open note final the entire semester. i feel as though we could have at least been allowed notes/a cheat sheet. disappointed :(
How hard would it have been to put TBD on the syllabus instead of 'online' for the final??
