Very passionate about what he is teaching. will make you think differently
His tests were all based on his opinions, very fun, i cant read minds
I'd like to see where he gets his test questions.. there are no right answers!
interesting class...I was thinking about changing my major to envi!
had about four classes with him, very smart, passionate adn entertaining
His classes will make you stop showering and love it. And it will make you admire a 60+ year old farmer. Andrus for president!!
best class i've taken at bing. he's a wonderful teacher and his course is very cool.
Great class. Probably the most interesting class I have taken. The few readings are interesting, and the work is not hard. He is a very interesting and passionate man. You will learn alot!
awesome professor! he is one of the few professors i have found to be this passionate about what they teach. he is the reason envi is my major.
This was the most interesting course I've taken at bing. I never met a professor so passionate about his work. The one downside to this course is the exams are based on his opinions.
Great teacher. His lectures are very interesting and often very humerous as well. Like most environmentalists, he is very biased, but if you're taking one of his classes you probably agree with him anyway. He is also very easy to talk to outside of class
Very interesting and thought provoking class. He makes you think differently about the world. He is very opinionated and his tests reflect that
this has been my favorite class so far at bing, his lectures are always interesting and for the discussions we get to walk around it the woods.
The best professor I've had so far at Binghamton. I highly recommend this class and anything else he teaches.
The class material is interesting, but I can't seem to stay awake in his class. Taking notes is hard as everything is oral. But Andrus is very knowledgeable and well respected in his field. Also - a lot of work for a 101 class.
By far one of the most engaging and interesting teachers I have ever had. I learned a lot in this class.
This guy makes the class material come alive, he is incredibly interesting, and the class is well structured.
Best teacher I have had in SUNY Binghamton.
Andrus knows his stuff, plain and simple.
Andrus is awesome. He is so passionate about what he does. He's a tough grader, doesn't curve. I took his Tropical Ecology course in Costa Rica - amazing experience, the tests were difficult though, but so worth it.
This guy rocks! Great teacher!
i really wish this guy could teach more classes. i have gotten an A in each class i took with him, he has always been helpful, the guy is great.
Andrus knows his material very well. His class makes you open your eyes and realize how ignorant everyone is to the world around us. Be prepared to walk in the nature preserve. His tests are not too easy but in no means hard.
i definitely recommend taking this class... there's 3 tests that are OK if you study, and a final. the books are good, and the TA's are really cool.
Very helpful. learned alot in this class
probably learned the most in his class than any other class in college.
Andrus is undoubtedly the best prof I've had in college. This class raised so many important issues that most people don't know about.
great class. great professor. andrus is a hippie and he makes you care about the environment.
I took five courses with him. He was the best professor I had at Binghamton. Too bad he doesn't take grad students...
This guy rocks! Great class!
Andrus is an amazing professor. He has taught me so much and I'm glad that I'm getting the chance to TA 101 for his next year! :)
good teacher if you pay attention its easy to get good grades on tests, you learn alot, TA's takes attendance in discussion, in disscusion you have assignments
I learned a lot of interesting things in his class. I always found the topics helpful and relevant.
Andrus is a great teacher, and his class is easy if you go to all the classes and discussions. He's very passionate about the environment and social problems, and is an overall awesome guy. Take Envi 101!!
yo, no lie, Andrus is the most influential and awesome teacher that I've ever had in my life, and i've taken 3 classes with him. Too bad he doesn't teach anymore that I can take.
What a guy-- Andrus rocks! He's a little rough around the edges, but it's part of the charm that makes him special. I love you Andrus!
Andrus means well and he does indeed raise some valid points but he's burnt out. LEFT WING PSYCHO! Anti-business, anti-anything American. It's painful to have to listen to his rants on how America sucks. I think it's terrible.
This man should not be allowed to teach. I found his class to be politically oppressive and extremely anti-american. Also, he manages to digress into his own political agenda in every class, and fails to tech the material. Fortunately the material is so mindlessly easy that good grades are a given
This man is fighting the good fight. If you want to learn what's really happening ignore the Binghamton Review and take his class!!
despite conservative schools of thought regarding big business and overconsumption in ratings, the man teaches an ENVIRONMENT class, which just follows that he will bring up important socio-economic points that readily destroy ecosystems and habitat. And the man is definitely not a BURN OUT.
Though he does go on hiw own political rants, everything he says is complete FACT. The reason that he seem anti-american is because the american lifestyle is ruining the planet, and he's smart enough to see past the ****
Lacks any objectivity. Uses classroom as political soapbox. This class is not about the environment, it's about how much Andrus doesn't like the world around him. Thinks that everyone who doesn't agree with him is evil. Makes Karl Marx look like a conservative! DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS! Doesn't deserve
Gives Liberalism a BAD name. I'm a liberal and can't stand him. He has no objectivity, doesn't understand the world. Thinks everyone who is a conservative is evil. Overly critical of everything. Doesn't allow dissent. Class is not about the environment It's about his political agenda Don't take it!
Andrus is a GREAT professor and very smart. About the class: 1) A lot of work for an intro course, 2) Lectures are VERY interesting, even when he goes off on tangents, 3) Tests are almost all from the lecture, 4) If you keep your mind open, this class really makes you think and examine how you live.
He is an aweful professor. Does manage to stick politics into everything. I tried to stand up for reason (i'm liberal, but not stupid) with no luck. What can you do? Avoid him if you can!
He's a lovable old hippy. VERY liberal. I found him funny. He made me passionate and aware of many things I hadn't known about environmentally. This class is great to fulfill your G. Don't take it if you're not a nature person though. The labs are all hikes up in the woods.
good class
He is so passionate about his beliefs. Unlike any other professor out there. Agree or disagree with him he makes you think and that is what matters in college. Take his courses to experience a compassionate, caring, unique professor!
He is very opinionated, to an unhealthy extent, but he has a lot of interesting and important things to say. Don't trust his every word, but look into it. Labs are great fun. Very easy class. If you're conservative, only take this class if you're very open minded, otherwise you'll explode.
very liberal understanding, one of the best prof in Bing
I took his classes in 1992. I am now an EnviSci professor and I constantly refer to the crazy prof who would come into class with icicles in his beard because he would ride a bike, not a car. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being extreme in his views, Andrus was a 12. I can never be such a hippy, but he presented his case well. Thanks- you crazy hippy!
This guy is ultra-liberal and is not affraid to show it in his class. He makes his lectures interesting but his tests are all memorization. Interesting character for sure... (He hates G.W. Bush!)
Opinionated, brilliant, a great and active mind to have at Binghamton University.
He is a smart man. Very active mind. Hates coca cola and monsanto. He goes off on tangents alot but cares greatly for the material he teaches. His tests can be difficult so u have to study, but just put the work in and u can get an A.
really easy class because all he does is rant about how conservatives suck. the class is rather informative, though (as long as you use it as a stepping stone and not as fact).
One of the best professors I've had. I highly recommend taking a class with him, he is passionate about beliefs and whether you agree with him or not, he defintely makes you stop and think. The class is easy, all you have to do is memorize the lecture notes. Don't buy the textbook, I only opened mine once all semester.
Teaching this course has got to be the greatest job for Andrus. It's an oppurtunity for him to spout his outdated, unsupported opinions. We found a mistake on a test and he wouldnt give the pts back because he didnt want to change 165 exams. tests.stay away unless u r a crazy liberal and you want to take tests on different types of leaves
He makes his points known. Take anything the guy says with a grain of salt. He has a point sometimes but he puts so much spin on the facts. He's like the anti-Bill O'Reilly and about just as much of a blowhard when it comes to his views. The guy is a good teacher when he's teaching science and not why Bush and his administration are total morons.
tougher then it was supposed to be. Its possible i didnt study enought, its a bit hard to stay awake even at 1200 in his class, but labs are fun. Dont markthis as an easy A class, itis not. I ended up wit a B+, messed up my gpa. All in all, hes not that crappy, can be funny at times, and not nearly as easy as reputed. Just go to class/listen!
not easy, dont miss one class, read everything he assigns, look over old tests, and PAY ATTENTION in class, that is much harder than it sounds with this guy at bat. Stay away if your looking for the esasy A this class was supposed to be. Oh, and he could care less about you, you are a number to him.
His political rants are annoying and a waste of time. However, you will learn a lot if you pay attention and take his extreme opinions with a grain of salt. Lots of work but not horribly difficult. Nitpicky tests so study hard. Easy discussion assignments compensate for hard tests. Overall, you will earn a good grade if you study and do the work.
He is a really nice guy, but class is pretty boring. He likes the material, but speaks in somewhat of a drone. I had fun on fieldtrips with him, but he is a tougher grader than Shepherd. Pretty difficult to follow, but not a terrible teacher overall although I don't think that he grades well.
Awesome professor! He really knows his stuff, and his lectures are interesting and funny. Just study the notes from lecture, and the tests will be easy. Everyone should take this class! A+
Super cool prof! you actually learn things that really matter in life. he knows his stuff thoroughly & is very intelligent. but this class requires more work than other 100 level courses & takes time. lectures are cool, he jokes quite often. the thing is that some questions on the tests come from the textbook so it helps to have it.
Andrus was an amazing professor. he was passionate about all of the information that he teaches his students. easy to earn a good grade in the class. i failed 2 exams and still managed to get a C+.
Professor Andrus is one of the best professors I've ever had. He really changes your way of looking at the world by encouraging you to question assumptions made by our society (including educational institutions) on a mass scale. His lectures are great, the reading is excellent, and the field trips are a blast. Everyone should take this class.
took it for my G gen-ed. class was interesting at first but by the last few weeks it was like the world is dying and there is nothing you can do about it. exams are easy but some of the questions are terrible (TA's make them). i got an A-. if you are politically conservative don't take this class.
Andrus is a cool guy like everyone said. He can be a bit repetitive but is overall interesting. The books he made us read was not bad except for one really boring one. The discussion does boost your grade. I think Andrus is pretty lenient with the grading...he added like 8 more points to each test since the average was low...pretty nice.
amazing proffessor. life changing class. he tells you about the real happenings of the world, wheter you like it or not. what he speaks is the truth, but sometimes the truth is hard to handle, and actually very scary. he tells us our society needs to change and it really does. take his class and use the knowledge you obtain to improve our world
Everyone at BU should be required to take one of his classes. He's nationally awarded by the sierra club for his dedication and he has a serious but hilarious personality. After taking three of his classes, I find that one can do well easily but more importantly, one will begin to see how mankind has affected the world.
A very influential teacher. You can learn A LOT from him if you keep an open mind. He is very good at explaining connections between society and the environment and you will start seeing the world and your place in it differently. Very interesting, funny, sweet old man. His intro class should be a requirment.
if you are thinking about taking any class with this professor, do it. you will not regret it. this man is a wealth of knowledge from whom you will learn amazing concepts. ecological agriculture will make you think critically about life as you know it.
He is a very smart man, but EXTREMELY boring! Mumbles throughout the whole lecture which makes it impossible to stay awake. Entirely too much busy work for the discussion classes, even though the readings aren't that bad. Tests are fairly hard and very specific. I would not recommend taking this class for just a GenEd.
He's funny and entertaining.
This class was a fairly easy A for me...and it was interesting. Andrus is extremely biased in his social views; however, if you take it with a grain of salt, he does open up your eyes to many different issues...but we'll see if the world is in a state of panic in 20 years because of oil prices/supply, because according to him it will be...
I say this about very few professors, but Andrus OWNS MAD NEWBS. Take this class.
I enjoyed listening to Andrus' lectures. They were all passionate, and he seemed intent on exposing us to all the problems and corruptions in the world. However, they were repetitive and got old quickly. His tests asked questions on facts not mentioned in lectures, but it was still easy to do well. Also, there are a bunch of books you need to read
Really passionate about his subject, and lectures are rarely boring. Unfortunately, he also tends to get stuck on the evil of corporations or shrimp or whatever, and repeat himself a lot. Test questions are sometimes written in a confusing way, but as long as you study and pay attention to lectures class isn't hard.
awesome professor very insightful about the globalization of the world and the effect of large companies on other parts of the world as well as our own, extremely intelligent,
I have taken 3 classes with him and also spent my entire summer abroad with him. He is the one of the most influential people in my life. If you can take a class with him do so, it will open your eyes! He knows his stuff!
Class is a joke. Tests are straight out of lecture and i mean straight out. There is usually a couple of questions from the lab, but the TAs tell you what to know, EXACTLY! Some of the questions on his tests are just opinions but its not like rocket science. Youll get to know what he likes and what he wants you to say.
I took envi 101 and I am taking 326 now with Andrus. He is brilliant and hilarious. He likes to make make up long rediculous answers for stupid questions but you get used to it. I highly recommend taking a class with him. He's spot on when it comes to environmental issues and politics, whether you like what he's saying or not.
Andrus is definitely as interesting prof. He's very liberal and often complains of the evils that corporations do, and a lot of his lectures are just him ranting on. The class was pretty easy, go to discussion and do the work. Test aren't necessarily easy, you have to study. You may hate this guy, you may worship this guy and follow him everywhere
andrus is the grandfather i wish i had...he's really liberal, funny and unbelievably smart. His class was entertaining and a great intro into my major;environmental studies. DEFFINETLY take a class with him if you get the chance, but go to the lecture more than i did a lot of the test is based on it. Tests aren't hard but read the book!
Great person although he is not for everyone, but if you actually listen to what he is saying you can learn a lot! The tests are easy although the TAs usually do a pretty bad job writing them. He is apparently pretty hard to find during office hours but once you track him down he is very helpful. Great guy, good class.
You will actually learn practical things in this class... He's extremely knowledgeable and the class is all concepts... Tests are not very easy and you have to pay attention to what he says.. Definitely take this class, it's very interesting.
Andrus is either a prophet or blasphemer depending on your political point of view. Come in with an open mind and get ready to have it blown! Not only do you learn plenty about environmental issues and science, but you also learn about practical solutions and policies. He may not be for everyone, but I loved this class.
Amazing teacher, amazing experience, not like any teacher you've met before.
There is not a real structure to his lectures which bothered me. He jumped around a lot in lectures as well. And he did not blow my mind either. The food industry segment was interesting but again his thoughts were scattered so I didn't learn anything much besides a fun fact. Be prepared to buy about 4 more books on top of the textbook.
Andrus has great intentions - and I believe that people are more interested in those than what he teaches. This class is a little more of his own personal agenda than a class of intro level environmental science.
Lecture is more like a political rant. You will probably find you either adore him or loathe him based on your political leanings and beliefs. He can be quite funny at times though, and does encourage you to see past the garbage that we are being fed so often. Just don't oppose anything he says in class.
At first i took this class because of the rating he had. You have to do a large amount of work just for a 100 level class. I thought the test was going to be east like come on its a Enivirment class but i was sadly mistaken. his test are hard and you have to study for them if not you will be screw. I fail1 test and i should be getin a C
Fun, easy class that is definitely worth taking. Just go to class and pay attention. I studied the night before each test for 2-3 hours max and had no problem getting an A.
Dick is an amazing person as well as a great professor. My personal experiences with him have been great in all respects, but I will warn non-science type majors looking for an easy science A, this is NOT what you're looking for (unless you grew up on a farm and your parents are hippies). Dick has a completely unique approach to intro ES, enjoy!!
Make sure to go to class. His tests are tricky and ask for minute details he mentioned in lecture for 5 seconds. Test questions are also sometimes opinions, so make sure you put HIS opinion. I enjoyed his lectures, but I did not think he was very personable.
going to class is absolutely mandatory. I didn't buy the textbook, and still got a B+. Some of his exams are unfair (though all multiple choice), questions are very heavily based off of his own opinions. Really good guy though, and cares a lot about his students. Lectures are always entertaining.
Amazing human being. I spent 4 weeks with him in a rainforest in Costa Rica. Learned more than I have in my entire life. He's passionate about his subject, and extremely knowledgable. If you're not interested in his subject do not waste his time, he will fail you.
great guy! very helpful, VERY knowledgable and actually cares about what he's teaching.. haven't found a teacher I love more than him in my 4 years of college.
GO TO CLASS. Take as much notes as possible. Test are based entirely on lecture and discussion. do not use the textbook. Discussion is a lot of work for a 100 level class. Consist of ten, one paged journals, you have to read two books, do a presentation, bring in prepared notes. and do a nature project.
He likes to pull numbers out of his ass so listen to his lectures diligently. Even though most students do not read the textbook, I strongly recommend you to buy and use it; the old editions work just as fine, if not the same. Just take lots of notes; a B is wingable.
Loved his class. Very interesting and super knowledgeable. MUST take one of his classes if you want to go into an environmental career. You have to work to get an A in his class, but he makes the material interesting and has a genuine love of what he teaches. I will definitely be taking more of his classes.
This guy has a serious fanbase on campus, so i don't know if it's something wrong with me but I really despised this guy. He used terms falsely (such as exponential growth) and outright distorted facts (such as supply-side economics was first implemented by Nixon). He uses the classroom as a forum for his hippi political ideologies.
Do not take his class! You could not even hear what he is talking about, and his word is confusing. The tests are horrible, horrible. And he talks about his personal comments all the time, I don't know how many times I have heard some the same objective comments from him, and it doesn't help us to improve our grades at all. DONT TAKE IT!
I like the environment, I like learning about the enironment, but this man has the immediate assumption that nobody cares about what he teaches. A lot of his exam questions are a load of BS, highly opinionated and confusing. I still love the environment, but he and most of his TA"s are ridiculous!
I have conflicted feelings about Andrus. On 1 hand, hes brilliant, passionate about what he does, and HILARIOUS. He literally made me lol every class. But hes also incredibly hard. His test questions were insanely integrative and difficult and he doesnt curve. He wasnt helpful either and would give u sarcastic responses when u asked about exams.
HIGHLY opinionated. Lectures are ramblings. States a fact/opinion one time and asks Q on it. Tests are kinda hard but have a big curve. Discussions help a lot with grade if you get a good TA. Recommended? Yes. Why? I didn't have to do much studying, it fulfills a gen-ed and you DO learn some cool/interesting stuff.I like his ideas, but not rly him.
hated the class. so unbelievably boring and unorganized. he rants about nonsense. makes up random percentages and then puts them on the tests. tests are ridiculous and hard for no reason. discussion is boring but helps increase your grade. 3 tests and a final and big curve at least.
Andrus is definitely very passionate about environmental issues, but assumes that students are "just teenagers" who don't care or understand. On the bright side, I learned a lot from his class, especially from discussion. Relatively easy class, but tests can be tough. DON'T buy the textbook- its expensive and unnecessary.
Andrus is extremely hard to follow in class, he mumbles and is monotonous. He's a nice passionate guy but has trouble keeping his students interested and attentive. I took this class for an easy A and it wound up being one of my hardest classes because of how boring it was. His test questions are opinionated and frustrating, leaving you to guess!
Really passionate about the subject but also very repetitive and monotone. Has been known to give out some false info so be weary of that. Tests aren't the best representation of what you learn in class, so try to read the textbook. Discussions were by far the best part of the class, they were fun and the TA's were all extremely nice.
More than just a professor and lector if you get to know him. Great and passionate teacher, really knowledgeable about many topics, even technology which is surprising given his age! His smaller discussion-based classes are more interesting and engaging than his 101 lecture. He's also engaged in the community. Great guy overall.
Despite being 101, this is a class for people who already know about environmentalism. He's a cranky old man, but that's because he's an environmentalist. I really enjoyed this class and got a lot out but I think that's because I already cared. Don't bother with the textbook, just sit near the front and take careful notes.
Dick is the most brutally honest & eye-opening professors you'll encounter. Hes seen a lot and looks to share that knowledge and wisdom with his students. He also gives great reading material. As long as you care, actually put in effort & talk to him about stuff that matters, you'll be good. He can change your view of everything if u really connect
Andrus is a great guy. He tends to go off on rants in lecture but he's a fount of knowledge on various topics and can do a lot for you if you get into the class. If your not environmentally inclined, don't take this. Tests are EASY and common sense IF you GO TO LECTURE!!! First week preaching about environmentalism, after teaching.
Dr. Andrus is an amazing professor and he has inspired me to major in this field.
If you're an envi major you need to take a class with him before you graduate. He is incredibly knowledgeable and definitely makes you think in a different way. This was my favorite class I've ever taken and not too hard at all.
Amazing professor at Binghamton. Classes co-taught by Dr. Andrus and Dr. Shepherd were my absolute favorite! The banter and wealth of knowledge between those two was incredible.
