I loved Mr. Appleman. He was a bit intimidating at first, but as the semester progressed, i learned that he's a sweet guy. He takes English seriously. Make sure you show up to class and do your assignments. He goes on rants about current events and i definately learned alot from his class!
You can't play a player.
Professor sets high standards for his students, as he should. Always come to class prepared! He likes to see that his students are giving their 100% effort. Highly recommend, he was a great Professor and you will learn a lot in his class.
Mr. Appleman, is a great teacher! He keeps you motivated and tells you exactly what he wants. It's because of him that i am now minoring in English.
One of the best teachers at DCC. Demands a lot but he will make you excel if you are serious about learning. If he is one of the teachers available for your class, take him!
You learn a lot, but he's definitely not one of the nicest people in the world. Very sarcastic, and picks on certain ppl constantly. If you're that person, you should just drop the class.
Mr. Appleman is definitely the best prof. I've had at DCC so far. He's super smart & knows a lot about a lot. He pointed out things in my writing that H.S. teachers seemed to overlook. He made me a better writer & critical thinker. If you're serious about learning, mature, and driven, take his class. He can be a little intense though.
Mr. Appleman is easily the best professor at DCC. He has a true passion for the subject he teaches and a genuine interest in the success of his students. He sets the bar high and challenges you to explore and perfect your abilities. Though I am a science major, I believe that I gained more tools and insight out his his class than any other at DCC.
Mr. Appleman is a very good teacher! You have to show up to class everyday. He never cancels. He expects alot from students and if you try your hardest and take his advice you'll do great. You have to pay attention and actually read to pass.
Mr. Appleman is a true college professor. He is demanding but you will learn the most from him. He is always available for students who visit him to receive further guidance in their writing. Do not be late to his class, be prepared by reading all assignments, and just do your best. He is truly interested in the success of his students.
He's a difficult teacher, but if you do your work then he will love you. He is a bit opinionated, but keeps it relevant to the discussion. Probably not the best class to take if you're a conservative, he tends to have liberal viewpoints on just about everything. He loves the textbook and you must bring it with you. Be on time or he'll freak on you.
He is a difficult teacher and a bit intimidating but he does truly care about his students. He is very clear with his assignments and as long as you come prepared, you will do well in his class. He is a bit opinionated especially about current events, but at least you learn what is going on in the world. Don't let him change your opinion...lol
Mr. Appleman is fair, flexible, but NO BS. Show up to class, do the assignments, and you can get the A. He is always understanding and fair about extending due dates. Don't be late. Excellent teacher, but you will have to work...and in turn learn. Positive experience.
He's a bit of an acquired taste. If you have interest in the course you will like him, if not you will probably hate him. He wants a lot from each student and wants participation from everybody. He really likes a full discussion and appreciates what everyone has to say. i personally recommend him for anybody actually interested in English
Mr.Appleman was a delightful professor. He pushed you only hoping to get the best out of you. He was very understanding and was easily accessible if needed. He was big on class participation. His class helped me to be more vocal on my opinions. Overall, he was a great professor.I would recommend him to anyone who will be taking this course.
Mr.Appleman is really a fantastic teacher. Not only does he truly care about each student's success, but he makes you appreciate classic literature. His assignments are straight forward and sometimes require you to move beyond your comfort zone. We read a lot of short stories, I loved them. All in all, an amazing teacher. Take his class.
Mr. Appleman was by far one of the best professors I've ever had. Not only does he give you diverse material to learn from, but he really wants you to do well. Show up to class and put real effort in and you're guaranteed success. I took this class years ago and it is still one of my most positive educational experiences. Take his classes!
Before I mention the great things about Professor Appleman, I will first mention one slightly-negative comment; he is fastidious. Anyway, he is very passionate about the course and wants all of his students to succeed. He is very challenging however and expects a lot for you. If you enjoy English, take his courses.
Outstanding, Passionate about the material and he wants all of his students to succeed. If you just want to squeeze by and are indifferent to your education (which you are paying for by the way), do not take his course. He is the ideal professor for students who want to expand their knowledge and who care for their education.
Mr. Appleman is passionate about English, expressive, and interesting. He puts a lot of effort into this course and will expect the same from you. The class discussions are thought-provoking and the short stories are relevant. ENG102 has been my favorite course so far at DCC. If you love English, take this course!
Tough, but fair. Very clear in what he expects and wants from you. It is plain to see that he is passionate about his work. He is always willing to help students and will seek them out if he feels they need it, but are not asking for it. He is personally invested in his students and wants them to succeed.
I loved this class. At first he was intimidating. But he expects the best because he is extremely passionate about this class and his work and that really shows. Overall, this class was a great experience and I wouldn't mind having him again.
Take his courses! Great literature with provocative discussion and lectures. Mr. Apple knows his stuff. He's firm but flexible where it counts. And funny/ironic--when you get to know him. Slackers need not apply. One of my all time favorites!
He's a great teacher. Comes off tough but it keeps you on top of things. As long as you do your work and put in a good effort you will get a good grade. In his discussions are relevant and often relate to current events.
Professor Appleman's class inspired me to go beyond and reach new levels of understanding. We read an impressive variety of contemporary and classic short fiction and he gave us free reign on poetry. I'm a much better writer and thinker for having had him! Consider yourself lucky to get him, but if you do --make the most out of it. A treasure!
Excellent professor, very friendly and involved with class. Read material and be ready to interact. He wants to hear from the students and have a discussion. Offer your thoughts in class and he will appreciate it. Do not be late! Always willing to work with you on extensions and extra time, very easy to work with as long as you put the effort.
Professor Appleman is simply an amazing professor. Once in a while I get a great teacher who loves what they do, which helps you to love it back, & he is one of them. My whole outlook on reading and writing has changed...and sometimes everyday life. He's very inspiring, motivational, and entertaining. HIGHLY recommended! Take his classes!!
An excellent and passionate teacher, Mr. Appleman approaches the curriculum with great zeal. Be prepared to read the required texts and engage in thoughtful discussion. Appleman encourages both creative and realistic thinking, something I greatly appreciated. Take his class!
Professor Appleman is ideal for those who want to kick it into drive. Had him several years ago and vividly recall his mind expanding lectures and course readings. There was an inspirational give and take in our class. I use what I learned on a daily basis. Very cool guy. Major Respect!
Professor Appleman taught me valuable information on writing a well written college essay. He is always willing to help you if you need extra help and cares for his students that put in the effort. He is passionate about what he teaches and makes the lectures in class very interesting. I would choose Mr. Appleman again as a teacher.
English was my weakest subject. Professor Appleman taught me valuable information on writing a well written college essay. He is always willing to help his students if they need extra help. He is very passionate about what he teaches and makes the lectures in class interesting. If I had to take another English class it would be with Mr. Appleman!!

Professor Appleman has been my favorite professor at Dutchess. He's truly passionate about what he teaches and is very inspirational. You need to be serious about this course or you will struggle. He tells you exactly what he expects and if you follow the assignments, you'll be fine. I highly recommend him as a professor, you wont be disappointed.
Professor Appleman has energy to burn while teaching that when it comes to writing--less is more. Loved his literature class which doubles as a history lesson. I remain forever grateful!
Prof. Appleman is an excellent teacher. I found his class very informative. I learned a lot about myself and life through the literature he covered. Prof was very upbeat and clear on what was expected. As long as you are open and prepared the semester should be a insightful journey!
English 101 was a great course that consisted of real life occurances and a journalist style of writing. I went into this class knowing very little about the world, but came out with a new perspective. I recommend this course to anyone.
He's the best Professor in a sometimes challenging department. He gives you so many ways to succeed by letting you explore, research and write about the most complex issues of the day. I learned A LOT. Do yourself a favor; wake up and feed off the energy. Take his courses!
Here is a professor who cares about educating people, and encouraging those around him to educate themselves. I am glad i took his class and will be sure to register for another one of his classes in the future. I did not take full advantage of my first semester, and Appleman is the one who really made me realize that.
A brilliant, organized and inspiring professor with the personality of a very cool dude. He rocks the scarf in winter! You're a fool to miss his classes.
Sometimes your life and a course and a Professor intersect as the fates allow. For me, this happened with Prof. Appleman and it changed my life for the better in so many ways and levels. Deep Thanks to him--and the stars.
Professor Appleman is a great professor. He wants the best for you. He really made it easy for me to enjoy the class and excel. He is a bright man and is easy to go to for help. He can be hard at times but i would deff reccomend him.
In addition to being a fantastic educator, Mr. Appleman's dedication is second to none. Through class conversation he found out what our interests were and brought related articles to class for us to further our understanding. He has high standards, but if you're willing to work hard, this class will turn you into a writer.
My favorite English teacher. As opposed to just learning and reading standard material, Mr. Appleman really taught us much more than that.
He's tough and challenging but also the best English Prof out there. A solid human who will open all kinds of doors for you. I took every one of his courses last year and he made getting up early a pleasure. Anyone who doesn't 'get it' isn't paying attention. Sign up.
With his encouragement i transferred to Columbia after DCC. I was totally motivated by his classes. The range and cultural diversity of his LIT choices was as rich as any I''ve encountered in the Ivy League.
Do you care about your mother tongue? Seriously, do you? If the answer is yes, he's your Duuude! Not only will he offer specific feedback where others let you skate, you'll get a much needed tune-up for better academic mileage way down the road. Just do it. I'm glad I did.
Singlehandedly awakened my passion for great American Fiction. There's an app for that: Appleman! Great Course.
Professor Appleman was phenomenal! He is genuinely passionate about his work and truly wants his students to be successful. You will be reading the literary works of some inspirational and talented authors. You be required to read, write and proofread. Prof. Appleman has office hours available and encourages his students to visit him with any ?s
He's serious in what he's doing, it's fair that he asks the same from you. You'll be exposed to a variety of LIT choices, & inspired in many perspectives. Don't waste anyone's time if you don't really want to learn. He listens and tries suitable ways to connect with different types of students. His door always opens in office hrs. Attitude is key!
I truly appreciate this professor. He was there for all of us and made it clear what was expected of us. Gave us ample time to complete the assignments and support to go over the papers we completed. I personally could have done better by using him more with all of his availability and willingness to assist our writing process. Stay prompt!!!
Honestly, he is the definition of a true professor. I am a better student person for having taken his classes. Major props.
My first impression was that he was condescending. However, he turned out to be a very down to earth professor. He was very clear with what he expected and how he would grade assignments. He offered a lot of food for thought and kept us thinking. He was always helpful and willing to work with you if you had any extenuating circumstances.
Beyond the great works of fiction you will read--all of his courses emphasize and encourage media literacy, a huge benefit for all underclassmen. Prof. A is a great guide. I say, clone him. He makes you think harder and write smarter.
Great Prof! Do not miss his classes. He lays the rules down from "the get" so be there and take notes because they're key to your success. Not just in his class, but for life. He's very smart and available so get to know him. He definitely abides. And yeah, thank whatever mysterious forces of the universe have led your road to intersect with his.
I am thrilled to have him this time around and I'm very hard to please. Start your papers early!
Seriously changed my semester and life. Would take him again in a minute. A great wake up call for me and most I've talked with.
Mr. Appleman is a really great teacher. I took his English 102 class this semester (Spring 2015) and thought it was great. I'm not really a fan of English classes but Mr. Appleton made it interesting. The stories, videos, and even the play I went to see, were all really great. I absolutely recommend taking any of Mr. Appleton's classes.
Professor Appleman is an excellent teacher because he's quite invested in his students. I would recommend this class to anyone who loves literature and is open to challenges because he's not the traditional teacher. He encourages thinking outside of the box. Textbook use is expected and also watching a play during the semester.
I can determine if I'm going to get the most out of a class before the end of the first day - that was the case with Professor Appleman. His passion for the course and the success of his students illuminated the room from the get-go, and inspired me to dig deep into our readings for maximized understanding. I'd recommend this course wholeheartedly.
If you have the chance do not take any classes with him. I showed up on time and ready everyday but I missed one essay because of a family matter and it dropped my grade tremendously. When I went to him to talk about it he said there was nothing he could do. But if you do end up having him as a teacher make sure you know your stuff!
Professor Appleman is extraordinary. He's clear, insightful and inspiring. The readings are carefully chosen and diverse. He opened more doors for me than I ever imagined. Yes, he is demanding. But the student who listens and takes advantage of all this course offers will benefit beyond words. Follow through!
Professor Appleman is the best English teacher I've ever had, but he's not easy. His classes challenge you to go the extra mile. In fact, he demands it. However, the rewards are quite clear when you enter the real world. I know.
If you're not a slacker take this class. Even if you are a slacker you need this class because he will push you. Professor Appleman was the best professor I've ever had, and everyone should take his class.
Professor Appleman is a great guy overall. For a strict professor he's very understanding of his students weak points. He's always willing to help as well. One thing I really like is he always pushed us to be the best students not only for his class but also ourselves. He's for real, and very respectable. This class will be no joke.
He wasn't the easiest, but he is there to help you out and understand the material. See a play and also make sure to reread your work and edit a lot.
He's a tough grader, but he gives amazing feedback. He may come off as strict the first week of class, but he's truly there for the students. Thanks to him, my writing has improved. Don't forget to edit! "Ernest Hemmingway edited his draft 50 times before publishing." I would definitely recommend him as a teacher.
The best teacher I have ever worked with. He made learning an incredible experience for me. He can be a tough grader, but it is only because he wants to push you to reach your full potential. The readings he assigns are inspirational and make you think outside of the box. This was the best English class I have ever taken.
Ivy League wisdom at a community college. I call that a bargain. Professor Appleman will challenge you to much greater heights...#bestprofessorever Would take him again in a minute.
Professor Appleman is a professional, helpful teacher who works hard to ensure his students are well educated. He gives more than adequate time for homework to be completed, and makes sure to return assignments in reasonable time, with good feedback. If you work hard and make sure that you turn in work on time, you will enjoy his class for sure!
Absolutely loved him. Fantastic teacher, made you work for the grades but was liberal with help and commendation. Gave lots of extra credit and wants students to succeed. Lets you pick a lot of the topics and directs classroom discussion. Is way more interested in content than the technical.
Professor Appleman is particularly but positively challenging. No stone left unturned regarding literature. I was never a reader, now I am. I enjoyed his class. The level of pride in myself after completing his course is very rewarding. He is tough but wants his students to do well. Offers limitless extra credit and help, its up to you to do it!
Professor Appleman was by far my favorite this semester. He isn't the easiest to please but gives good feedback on papers and gives plenty of extra credit opportunities. He opened my eyes to a lot of problems in society that I've never really thought of. I would definitely take his class again. I'm going to miss his lectures!
Prof. Appleman wants his students to be thoughtful, open-minded, and critically thinking. As an engaged student it should be easy for you to follow his thought process. Do your assignments (often just one paragraph) and take them seriously, because you will be required to hand every paper in. Participation matters.
Professor Appleman is one of the best English professors I've ever had and I would 100% recommend him, I'm taking him again for English 102. We had awesome discussions in this class and I really enjoyed his feedback on my essays. As long as you're willing to work for you grade you will love him!
Loved him!! Like all great teachers he requires you to examine the text more closely and write much more carefully. I will never forget his poem a day for reflection. The amazing authors in this course resonate for all time. AND you get the chance to write from your own p.o.v. to dig for greater personal truths.
My favorite professor I've ever had. very inspiring and encouraging. He was able to spark an interest in me when all my previous English professors have only put me down.
Prof Appleman is one of the best instructors I've had. If you put the work in, you can do well; if for some reason you aren't doing well, he will ABSOLUTELY work with you. He puts in as much (if not more) effort for you as you do for him. Do the work on time, with effort and you'll be fine, no doubt. DON'T push assignments off until the last minute
Richard apple man is one of the rare gems at DCC he's caring and is devoted to his students. Don't expect to come in and not put forth work. He works with you and actually wants his students to succeed. Honestly if I could have for every class I would 10 out of 10 in my books!!
You get what you put in like any other college class. Appleman is a really nice teacher and offers extra credit from time to time. I strongly recommend
This class is for students who love literature or wants to learn to love it. Before I started his class I wasn't that big on literature but now I love it. He has a clear passion for literature and if you want a meaningful experience that is sure to have an impact on your life then take this class. It is for students who are serious about learning.
IMO Appleman is the definitive English Professor. He loves his subject, loves students who take his "challenge" (to engage) and he is there for you in an outside of the classroom. There is a great balance of lecture and discussion and we had a room full of early risers who were good at contributing their viewpoints. But it all starts with him!
Studying Lit with this man is a gift. What a totally rewarding course! Do the work, reap the benefits.
One of the best English professor. Really takes pride in his work. Following the syllabus and attending his classes I guarantee u will not fail.
one of the best English professors I've had. I would definitely take his class again. he takes pride in the literature read in the class, makes you work for your grade, encourages you to get out of your comfort zone, and chooses different subjects for the literature in which you will always have an opinion in the discussion.
Totally worth it. He's a great prof for Contemporary Issues and Literature. Manage your time for best results.
Professor Appleman challenges you to greater heights. No one in my previous education has cared as much about opening my eyes to a greater awareness of what's happening in the world. My writing and rewriting has improved in a big way. HUGE thanks.
Professor Appleman is a Great teacher of English. Encourages critical thinking, critical writing, and self-exploration.
You will not regret having him as a professor. He might be tough on you, but its worth it. At the end of the semester, I had a better understanding of writing. He pushes you to do your best and by doing that he makes you watch a lot of ted talks that makes you to want to succeed. Best professor ive ever had. You wont be disappointed! Trust me!
I'm going to be honest, the first day of class Appleman gives the impression of a hard-ass. Once you get through the first week with him, his style of teaching grows on you. Appleman is one of the best. I never seen someone so invested in each student to the extent he is. Even though he expects a lot from you, he still is willing to work with you
Absolutely loved him!! He may be a little tough on you, but its only because he truly cares and sees so much potential in each of his students. As long as you do the assignments as instructed and actually put effort into the work, youll be fine. Dont be afraid to ask questions either!!
This class is a comp class, an issues class, a history class, a context class, a psychology class and more. I mean, it's got everything. And it's taught by a man who wants to open your eyes to everything you may not have considered before. Get the point? I LOVE Professor Appleman.
If you get the chance take this professor. He is always trying to help and always provided extra credit. His lectures are engaging and fun. As long as you do all the work and put care to it you will have a good grade, just make sure you follow the directions.
I feel like I learned a lot but was forced to keep my own political views inside as he raged every class about politics. Got D's and C's on papers until I started writing from his political perspective then received A's.
Pros - Gives a lot of Extra credit Hes very passionate about the topics he teaches He becomes more laid back as the end of the semester Cons - can come off as a bit of a hard ass in the first class very politically biased
One of the best and most knowledgeable professors at Dutchess. Please take this man if you get the chance, you won't regret it. Very compassionate about his work which makes engaging in his class that much more great.
Professor Appleman by far is one of the best English professors I have ever had. I am honestly not a fan of writing at all, but the way he makes you think & challenges you with his assignments, makes you want to be a better writer. He gives tons of extra credit, so theres no reason to get below a B. 100% would recommend taking his classes.
This guy is churning out English language enthusiasts from all over upstate NY. Great professor!
