Rambles but is funny some times
No Comments
Self-absorbed. He was a significant scholar in the mid-80s, but has badly faded. Tends to ramble, about both material and self. Uses unnecessarily complex and elongated sentences to communicate relatively simple ideas.
All he does is ramble! Good attendance benefits you so just use the class for sleeping time. Two essays for the whole semester. Can be considered vulgar to some.
Very funny man, however he does ramble on and on at times. The class is easy, he cracks some good jokes and tells some good stories. I'd recommend him.
Rambles on and on... His lectures are unclear and so are his assignments.
This class starts out slow but then gets harder as the midterm and final approaches. Dr Ashley gives good points for attendance and outlines very well what one needs to do for an A. He does talk alot about nothing sometimes, but is very funny.
Don't take his class if you're easily offended. Encourages student discussion, and actually seems to prefer discussion to lectures. An excellent professor if you're majoring in polisci, but non-majors might find his classes too involved.
Go for the attendance and for the few times he'll call a student names. Discussions are over most peoples heads, so you'll sit there and look clueless unless youre a POS major. Even if you have no clue what the hell is going on though work hard and you can still pull high grades. Not too fun.
Amusing teacher, quick witted, almost vulgar. Tells lot of ancedotes. Very disorganized. Dropped after 9 classes because he hadnt taught anything or given us a clear idea what we were doing yet. Just sat there listening to his jokes Said he was going to grade us on our ability to get "a following".
I hated this class with a passion, but ironically got an A. Ashley is one of the worst teachers I've had. It's easy to get an A if you go into his office hours to help you clarify for the midterm and final. He's disorganized, not funny and offensive. But it's an easy A.
Worst class ever. Worst text book ever.

Very intelligent and entertaining.
Very smart, but extremely liberal.
I'm a polisci major & looked forward to this class before it started, but I can't say I learned anything about IR, nor did he attempt to teach us about it. All I really learned how to do was analyze four movies (bad ones) about which we later had to write pointless papers & regurgitate his catch phrases for each theory on tests or be graded down.
Worst class I have ever taken. It was a painful experience. The text book is horrible as well. Make sure to throw it at Dr. Ashley on the last day, and if you don't do that, at least burn it.

Dr. Ashley is one of the most biased and unfair teachers currently teaching at ASU.
Had him as part of a learning community. . .He's very smart and nice, but generally went halfway into other teacher's lecture time, and his watch interrupted the class every day at the same time. . . Very disorganized and has an interesting conception of
He goes on rants which are off the subject. It gives me a headache. How am I supposed to pick a film to write about? It's too soon in the semester. And I hardly watch films. Everyone I talk to hates him. Why is he still teaching? I've looked to him for hel
Dr. Ashley makes me hate Political Science! He can't teach for nothing!!
came into class with high expectations due to his previously published works but was let down by constant ranting
I hated his teaching methods, or should I say preaching methods. He was incredibly boaring and I could have sworn that he had mood swings.
no one should ever take this class and he should never teach , oh wait he doesn't teach he just goes off into insane tangents while everyone goes to sleep from confusion and boredom. Than, he has the nerve to grade harshly and give difficult midterms and finals!!!! dont take his class
While it is sometimes hard to follow his lectures he really knows his stuff, he loves when students come to see him in his office hours, but be careful what you ask; open ended questions will have very, very long answers. He loves to rant. o yea the mid term was graded very harshly.
Class can be very boring and somewhat difficult. Ashley is very intelligent although many people will find him very biased.
A lot of people don't like him because of the intellectual level of his lectures, and they also say he is not a very fair teacher. I personally thought he was brilliant, extremely intelligent, and although his class is difficult he was the most lenient of all my teachers by far. This is not a free ride class, it takes maturity.
i thought this was going to be my most interesting class, but now i will never take another polisci course. wont directly answer questions (which is why he is unhelpful), would rather spend time stiking down people who disagree with his politics than teaching class, and the book he chose is ridiculous. funny guy, but not worth it.
One of the worst classes I have ever taken. Nothing like what I thought it would be. The lectures and the textbook gave me a headache and the class seems to have no real point. The TAs grade most of your work and they do not do it fairly at all!!
His lectures are pointless. He spends 80% of his time telling made up stories that take him forever to finish and have no relevance to the material. He spends the rest of his time attempting to make sense of his absurdity by degrading students, telling them how stupid they are and boostin his ego. The book was much more helpful and less bullsh*t!
ok..this guy has definitly got some issues. He does rant insanely like everyone here says. All he takes about is Myths and Untruths and lies and etc etc..I cant stand him
A little crazy but I greatly respect him.If you just want a grade, get another teacher, especially for 160, but if you want to learn from a master of IR politics take his class he is nationally renound! His books are famous. If you figure him out, you will get a good grade, but there is the task!
Dr. Ashley is brilliant. If the other people who commented had actually done research for their papers, they would have realized that his work is cited all over the place. Maybe he does know more than you after all. His class is challenging and you have to read and think but it is worth it. Don't take for an easy A Gen Studies credit though.
Ashley has a lot to offer his students but you need to be patient to understand him. He is a brilliant man and I recommend his class to anyone with an interest in theory.
He may be a "brilliant" man who is cited in many books, however you couldn't tell by taking his class. He was incoherent and unhelpful and that was when he actually decided to show up. Don't waste your time with this class or with him.
Hard to keep your head above water but if you actually put in some effort don't get offended because he made your opinion seem like it came from Dr Suess, you just might come away with some extremly valuable knowledge. one student asked him if he was conservative or liberal and it he got mad and said "i am beyond that, you can't fit me into your bo
He failed to show up for many classes with no notice. I spent a great deal of time preparing for this class and felt I learned little or nothing. I'm sure he is brilliant, but not all brilliant people should be professors. My other complaint is that his TAs do most of the grading, but are not present to hear what he lectures.
Great teacher. Very important in the Political Science community. Smart. Funny. Casual. Tells you exactly what is on the test. Watch lots of movies. Listen to his lectures and you won't need to read, and vice versa. Recommend wholeheartedly.
This class was a breath of fresh air. Dr. Ashley is incredibly brilliant, and much more easily understood than people make him out to be. His lectures are clear so long as you don't mind the occasional tangent. He's INCREDIBLY liberal, but hilarious. Great class, challenging. I recommend it, although not to the faint of heart.
very sarcastic and will not help u at all! he gets joy out of using big words and building himself up on a pedistal
Dr. Ashley is very talented in the English language and can guide you through the class and its fun.
Here is the type of an extraordinary professor that will get a bad review from a generic ASU student. I think he is to good to be reviewed by ASU students. If you really listen carefully to the arguments and actually read the textbook instead of daydream while doing so, you will find out why he is the most well known professor in his department.
This guy is a space cadet. I'm awaiting his mission to planet Jupiter. Take the class if you want some nap time because you'll never discern any meaning from his long hopeless tangents. Do the reading, and you can still get an A. If you suck up to him he'll give you benefit of doubt on the essays. You'll just have to sit through him talking though.
confusing
He is a hard teacher, but this is a rewarding class. You learn alot from him and as long as you study for the tests you will do just fine.
He went off on wild tangents constantly - usually about his own life. Although very funny to listen to, I can't recall a single thing about the class. He uses a grading technique that offers the benefit of the doubt and renders impossible an F. Incredibly stressful though because I never had an idea what was going on - and I never missed a class.
This was a night class that met once a week on tues, I used to booz it up at the bar next door only because I knew it was the only way to get through this weirdos class. I still struggle to remember what I actually learned from the class. I remember him acting the fool but not saying anything useful.
Dr. Ashley lectures each class, most times he gets so far off course you can get lost. His T.A. is a difficult grader, who tries to hard to be like Dr. Ashley.
Great Guy. Has a cool T.A.
I absolutely loved Dr. Ashley! The class picks what's going to be on all the tests, he tells you how to answer to get full credit, and he looks over the midterm paper if you turn in in early with the option of correcting it to get a better grade. If you do bad in this class it's because you're lazy, I got an A.
This guy is self-absorbed and does not teach anything from the book. Rather, he babbles on (occasionally bringing the topic back to Political Science) because he is tenured. Take him if you don't actually want to learn about Global Politics.
Dr. Ashley is one of the most entertaining and charismatic lecturers I've had. This was helpful since the class met for three hours once a week. Expectations were clear, and everyone had a chance to submit the paper early and find out ahead of time exactly what to study for the exam. The book was average, but he brought things into clearer context.
He is nice and fairly flexible with turning assignments in but it is not an easy class.
Dr. Ashley can be acerbic and opinionated. Still, I enjoyed his style. The book was very clear and interesting, and tied each theory to a popular movie, which we then watched in class. Read extensively and be prepared for discussion. However, if you have a short attention span, you might not like his lectures. Overall, very good class.
He is a great teacher and he knows what he is talking about. I was in his honors class and i got an A because you need to be serious if you want to pass. The book was okay and i liked the way he tied a theory to a movie. We got a chance to turn in our final essays early to get a grade and improve it before the due date.
I love him! the class is a little hard but totally worth it!
Dr. Ashely is the worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. His teaching style is horrible. He only uses one major assingment and two test which are vaguae and very hard. It is impossible to take notes from him. He speaks in sloppy Iambic Pantameter which is impossible to follow. Futhermore it is impossible to cantact him. DONT TAKE HIM!
Definitely has a different teaching style, can be entertaining. His lectures help guide students through the text book. Although, just a few people had a hard time following. He respects students who make the effort. He will not tolerate stupid questions.
He is so so.
If you are inquisitive, and like to make decisions for yourself, this class is not for you. Ashley prefers to passive-aggressively promote his ideals from his bully pulpit. He is impossible to contact outside of class/office hours. I do not pay to hear my professors' personal political beliefs, even if i am a poli sci major.
He is definitely an odd man. Probably the weirdest I've had at ASU. He is quite bipolar and goes off on tangents a lot. You forget what subject you are in. The only really cool part about the class is the relation of IR theories to popular film.
Dr. Ashley really knows his stuff and makes the class engaging and interesting. He's really calm and helpful, and however sarcastic he seems, he does care about helping students succeed in the class. He does teach his own bias, but at least admits that he is biased, and there's no need to adopt his viewpoints to do well.
a lot of people in his lower level courses go in thinking they know everything and refuse to see otherwise, which is probably the reason why there are some students who don't like him. while he does have a tendency to go on tangents, not a lot of people realize that he is one of the modern most respected theorists on realism in academia.
He's hard to understand, but very fair and very fun.
Dr. Ashley is an awful teacher for 160. The very first week, and according to the syllabus, we were supposed to watch a film every time we discussed a new theory. Well, finals are in 3 weeks and we haven't watched any! He uses 20 minutes to take attendance. You're grade will depend on his mood that day. Doesn't answer e-mails doesn't want to help.
At first he comes off as a jerk, however, in time you learn that he is one of the best polisci teachers at ASU. He creatively connects movies to political theories and provides several examples in his lectures to help you understand. Take notes in class, you will need in-class examples for the two tests you get.
A lot of the things that irk most people is his condescending demeanor. However, he knows his stuff and makes his exams easy to study for. His lecture gets a little boring since he goes off on tangents, but he can be pretty funny if you accept his dry sense of humor. The main problem with the class is the lack of blackboard updating.
I would like to defend Dr. Ashley and say that he is one of the most intelligent and down to earth professors I have ever had. I may not have had him with all of the POS160 students in big lectures, but in our seminar group of about 25 people he was able to get an entire class of strangers to go out drinking with one another. Thanks Dr. Ashley
This class is easy if you take good notes. I got an A in his class. There is two exams and one essay, study guides are provided. Ashley knows the material very well, and those that wrote bad about him are the kids that didn't receive the grade they wanted. In his class good notes = good grade.
Dr. Ashley is one of the best lecturers at ASU. He goes off on very detailed tangents, but once you learn the concept, thanks to the tangent you'll never forget it. His lectures are very thought out. Go to his office hours and talk to him about the paper, he really helps. Don't bother with the TAs.
Best teacher ever, hot a huge fake lib
Dr. Ashley seems like a great lecturer. I think that he really does know what he's talking about, however, i found this class to be dreadfully boring. I was interested in Realism, but after that, i could barely focus beyond attendance. Tests are fairly easy to study for with the study guide he gives.
He knows what he is talking about but he takes literally 20 minutes to get to his point. It is incredibly hard to pay attention in this class because he speaks incredibly slow and rambles quite a lot. Doesn't help that I'm not completely interested in IR theory. If you are interested it might be a better class. Depends on your preference.
He knows what he's talking about, but he takes forever to get to it! I had no idea what to take notes on and what not to! My suggestion do not take this class, but that;s just me, I still left the class with a B, but that's through a lot of very very hard work
Fantastic professor, with a great TA. The class consists of a midterm, research paper, and final exam. He takes attendance by dividing the class into five groups and randomly lists one off during each class period by means of a question. Unlike other professors, he bends over backwards for students and is very helpful. There's only one book, too.
If you have to take POS 160, find a different teacher. His lectures are unfortunately, terribly boring. He does have some what of an "old man" temper, so if you can find another teacher, I recommend doing so. I would never take one of his classes again.
Has very high expectations for homework and grades ridiculously harshly. The work itself is interesting, but is quite demanding. Most frustrating is the fact that no matter the effort you put in it is unlikely you will receive a good grade.
Professor Ashley is actually pretty awesome and funny. His lectures may be a little dry but he is a really nice guy and willing to help. I thought his assignments were fair and he grades very fair as well. Studying is crucial for the midterm and final and reading is important to do well but it is generally not that hard to get an A.
Class is relatively easy if you study. For each exam there are study groups that are EXTREMELY helpful, attendance to these is necessary if you want to do well on the exams. Be prepared, he takes up every minute of the class for lecturing.
Best professor ever! He cares for his students and does everything possible for them to pass his class. didnt buy a book the whole semester, i based myself on notes from lectures and still got an A for the semester. pretty easy class if you are willing to attend lectures and study for exams.
Tangential. Boring. Uses the word "acquiesce" too much. He was funny for a minute, but got old very quickly.
I thought at first this class would be fun or easy, talking about politics of the globe. But however, that's not the case. DO NOT take this class if you don't need to. This professor is also totally nontransparent, and is very inconvenient to seek help with. I withdrew from this class after missing 2 assignments due to depression. He didn't care.
Dr. Ashley was my favorite teacher from Freshman year. He will do anything for you, as long as you talk to him early about it. He's a very smart man, and is funny both inside the classroom and out. He does like to go on tangents, but they make the class interesting. He also shows movies to make things translatable! A+ teacher!
Great teacher, class is quite difficult and requires attendance and discipline to study to receive a high grade. He likes to talk about "random" things and go off on tangents, but if you take the time to really listen, everything he says makes perfect sense and is relevant to the discussion. The man is beyond brilliant and deserves great respect.
An excellent class for learning the fundamentals of international relations theory. Dr. Ashley knows his material quite well. In-class film screenings. If you're serious about Political Science this class will be very valuable and you will probably grade well. If not, it's probably going to take more discipline and reading than you'd prefer...
This man is a wonderful professor. He's about as knowledgeable as an international relations professor can get and you learn a lot for a beginning class. The reading is dense, but if you're serious about political science you'll eat it all up. It's not an easy class, but if you put effort and thought into it you'll do great.
From the start, this class was not what I was expecting. It is a class about International Relations, and it is not an easy A; it is quite difficult. However, he offers tons of help, especially with the final exam. He truly cares about his students, and he is incredibly knowledgeable in his field.
Dr. Ashley loves teaching and it shows. He goes off on long rants, but at the end he ties them into the theory and they make sense. I had this class as a once a week, 170 minutes class time and I definitely recommend NOT doing this. The class is entertaining how he ties in pop culture movies into theories but do NOT take it as a once a week class.
Don't do it if you don't have to. Very little from his lectures prepared me for the exams. Often I left class thinking what a waste of time. I still got an A because of the study groups. If you do take it go to study group.
I adored Dr. Ashley. I had NO interest in international relations/foreign policy until I took 160. I loved it. He's hilarious and will relate basically anything to IR. There is a midterm/final and a term paper. Take notes in class-tests require in class examples and read the book. Can turn paper in early for early feedback. He's such a great prof.
So far he's really cool. I'm really liking his class. I'm finding the information super super interesting and I have never had any interest in politics
I took two classes from Dr. Ashley back in the mid 90's. I was a business major and not a poly sci major. I really enjoyed his classes and the manner in which they were taught. I had no interest in political science until I took the classes from him. I remember that attendence was not mandatory but he would randomly take role.
This man is unbelievably pretentious. He relentlessly pontificates in class with no real direction. There are no power points, directed teachings, or anything useful. He usually limits his lectures to senseless crude jokes and poking fun at other students. I cannot stand him, and if you are looking for an education, do not go to this tenure slacker
He's rude and incredibly hard to follow in class. I don't understand what in his life gave him an entitlement feeling but he's plain rude.
If you actually listen to him, this man is an excellent professor and is incredibly knowledge about the subject he is teaching. Discussion board, midterm, paper, final. Really straightforward. Read the textbook and lecture notes. Not an easy A but definitely an interesting class!
Very pretentious and his lectures do not benefit your understanding of the material at all. It is obvious that he is very knowledgeable and is very intelligent but as far as Global Politics goes, do not take this professor if you don't have to. Learned more from the text than his lectures.
First half of a typical class is Mr Hand from Fast Times at Ridgemont High.Very entertaining.2nd half:preaches Occupy Wall St. propaganda, calls 9/11 a "myth" created by US govt, and is w/out a doubt a devout communist. He disgraced US troops in uniform to their faces!1st half of class only aspect worth going to.2nd half sucks the life out of you.
As a POS major, I was very excited for this course. Needless to say, I was disappointed. The course lectures are lackluster, dull, and wander hopelessly off topic - over half of the class over time did not show up. The tests themselves are challenging, but doable. Read the book and tolerate him - I just wouldn't suggest taking him again.
There are a lot of negative comments on here, simply due to his style of teaching. The class itself isn't difficult. He does go off on long tangents, but everything has a point. He is an extremely intelligent man, though he can come off as arrogant, he teaches the subject very well. Those hungry for the subject, will love him. The rest, hate him.
This teacher is awful. He tells stories and goes off on tangents that have no relevance to the class. Class is boring and not helpful. Then you have to take hard tests.... after being taught nothing. You will need to rely only on yourself and read the book extensivly
Dr. Ashley means well. You can go 2 his office hrs anytime and he's helpful. However, he won't respond to your e-mails. The class has a final and a midterm, which is HARD, and 1 HUGE essay to write. You watch a lot of movies and link the movies to theories in the text and post to discussion board. If you work HARD you will do well.
I loved the course, along with his style of teaching it. True, he does fall off topic a lot, and he explains things through stories and metaphors - I take Ashley as an old-style lecturer, as a a philosopher. If you can't grasp difficult concepts, you will hate him. Simple as that.
Dr. Ashley is a very nice man, but I dread attending his class. I get so bored when he goes off on tangents that he barely manages to relate to the material. It's so hard to pay attention and honestly I don't learn anything from him. Relating theories to movies we watch seems pointless and a waste of time. I used to like gov't until this class.
Yes, Dr. Ashley does go off on tangents. Often it can be difficult to tell the point of his lectures, but there's usually a meaning somewhere. He's a very intelligent man and you can tell he really cares about his students. If you want help he'll gladly meet you in his office hours. Reading the book is a must! Only way you'll learn the content.
Richard Ashley is a great professor who is very helpful to his students. This is not a class for someone who just wants an easy A, you need to actually spend time and immerse yourself into this subject. Ashley does not suffer fools, but he is always willing to help his serious students. If you really want to learn he is an amazing teacher.
His class is so hard. The lectures didn't help me at all, and I miserably failed the first test so I dropped the class.
It is clear that he is very experienced in his field, however his teaching style was ideal for the subject, personally. His often when off on long tangents and I found it hard to pay attention at times. However, he does have a great sense of humor and a desire to help the students who ask. Not an easy A, but overall a good course.
Dr. Ashley is extremely intelligent & has a great wealth of knowledge regarding political science. Yes, he does go on tangents but he tries to tie them into the lecture. The book is not really important but the lecture notes are. Ashley is extremely helpful if you visit him during office hours. Warning: the final is worth like 40% of your grade.
This class does not have much work. There are two tests, a midterm and final, and then there is a research paper.. The final is 40% of your grade. so you need to take that into account and there is not many ways to get your grade up. He is really funny, but his teaching is hard to understand, he explains through metaphors and the movies you watch.
This class is an anomaly! However, it taught me to be resourceful, hard-working, and reliant on myself. No response to emails; he rambles forever; goes off on useless tangents; on and on. I did very well on the last paper because I synthesized the material on my own time. Expect to put in A LOT of work outside of class to get a good grade.
If you have any views that don't fall in line with his own, good luck. If you're republican or conservative be ready to be told how your views don't matter, and shouldn't count. He misses more class than anyone, but will fail you if you don't make an appointment to see him to write a paper. He is pretentious, rambles incessantly... DO NOT TAKE.
Often just rambles on about his personal life. Very boring. Will often cancel class. Atleast for his midterm and final he gives you open note, laptop option and he gives you a list of the questions that will be asked.
His class was a trip. He is one of those professors who loves to cuss and call out students. He can be a little inappropriate at times. for attendance he makes you answer random questions non-course related so be prepared. for the paper he says its mandatory to go see him but really he does not care about you or your paper- he has too many students
This professor is so incredibly brilliant, I hope to absorb all of his knowledge. His ideas are so profound, and he is very much respected. If you are easily offended or have trouble grasping complex theories, do not take this class. If you are up for a challenge, and care to engage in intellectual conversation, this class is for you.
Attendance system is odd. Randomly calls one third of the class for attendance. Incredibly intelligent professor but often tangents way too long. Uses profanity and is vulgar at times. Entire class is discussion based. Randomly calls on students to engage about readings.
Goes on rants instead of giving lecture. Bad at responding to emails & communication in general. Be prepared to teach yourself 90% of material. Lectures are USELESS. Loved the subject (Intnl Law), but HATED this professor. I'm an A student and I found going to this class really difficult. Would not recommend this prof. At your own risk.
POS 191 was pointless. 1 hour per week of arguing back and forth about Trump vs. Clinton. I dreaded going to this class. Would not recommend Ashley for other classes or take again. He does not respond to emails. Discussions random/long-winded/very partisan, so we learned nothing. Fairly easy A - just show up and turn in your schedule forms.
Very entertaining and fun to listen to/interact w/. Cares deeply for his students. A few disc. boards, term paper, & midterm + final exams. Good attendance can help your grade but bad won't hurt it. Easy to blow off class, but you should go anyway. Need a lot of patience to take him as he meanders in his lectures quite heavily. Learned a lot!
Dr. Ashley is a sweet guy, but an awful professor. He'd spend most of class either taking attendance or going on a tangent not related to the material. I didn't really learn anything in the class - I had to rely completely on the book for the tests. Don't take this class, you'll never want to attend lecture. But, getting an A wasn't that hard.
Told the class one time that students voting for Trump should go to ASU's mental health services and as a class, we spent more time talking about the election and how evil Republicans are than we did actual course material. Overall, the work load is pretty light, just don't expect to learn a thing about International Law while taking this class.
