Best prof at vcu!! He is very clear when lecturing. This was my favorite class to attend bc he is funny and makes it sound so interesting. There's 4 exams and a paper that make up your grade
Funny, sweet guy. Just go to class, his test are directly from lecture. Great teacher especially for someone not majoring in psych. Take him!!!!
Really funny guy. His tests are a little tricky but all questions come pretty much directly from the study guide. Final is not cumulative makes class interesting and cracks a lot of jokes during class
great teacher and funny guy! Just make sure to study the study guide he gives you and you will do fine on all four tests.
best professor ive had at vcu!! very cool guy
At the risk of sounding like an echo...BEST PROFESSOR AT VCU!!! Funny, knowledgeable, and definitely cares about his students' progress. Would recommend to others.
Funny dude who really cares about his students. Likes to keep a laid back atmosphere in class. He's all about the real world application of material, and is not afraid to laugh at himself. The kind of professor you want to grab a beer with sometime, very down to earth.
Class had absolutely nothing to do with the History of Psychology and he just rambled about himself the entire class. Class was more on his opinion of different philosophical topics. Horrible, horrible professor but the class was a super easy A.
One of the worst teachers during my time studying here. I enjoy professors with a sense of humor but all he does is ramble on about himself and his life. He is very pretentious. His subject matter rarely relates to the course topic. If you want an easy A take his class. If you want to take a class for content avoid at all cost.
enjoyed his class, easy A , loves the topic of psych not so big om implementation. I would recommend.
This class is horrible. An easy A if you do the assignments, paper, & project, but he does not give clear guidelines for either one. All he does is ramble on about stuff that is not relevant to Psychology or the study/history of it. He thinks he's funny but he really just likes to hear himself talk. Most horrible and boring class I've ever had.
I don't know what everyone is talking about saying how awful Bardill is, he's a great guy the class is just boring and he tries to make it fun by talking about life stories. No tests, quizzes only grades are weekly assignments a paper and a group project. Required for psych majors and I'd reccommend taking him!!!!!!!!!
class is stupid and a waste of time but it is mandatory. guy rambles about nothing and has nothing to do with class. no tests all papers and projects which is good. has corny jokes that he expects people to laugh at.
class was extremely easy as long as you do the assignments, but the lecture itself was horrible. He rambles on about absolutely nothing related to psychology and he is extremely opinionated. And he forces you to come to class. My advice take the class, do the work, bring something to do in lecture because its pointless to listen to him.
The class is very very boring. No tests and quizzes, just weekly assignments and paper/presentation. He calls random names everyday for attendance. He can also seem very obnoxious at times.
He rambles too much about himself. First half of class has nothing to do with psych, second half's better. One paper, one poster project, 12 mini assignments from book. Keep up with paper, assignments and start project early. Easy A just entertain yourself in class b/c he's boring/random.
He really loves what he does. Takes attendance everyday, but might not call your name. 4 tests, final isn't cumulative...(thank goodness!) He does kind of talk about himself a lot, but he might ask about it on a test, so it's important to pay attention. Overall, a pretty great teacher!
GREAT Professor!! Only class that semster i actually liked. Lecture is interesting, Tests are not that hard, and he gives study guides. I never used the textbook and got an A on tests just form studying my notes from lecture really hard. Attendence is mandatory. I would DEFINTELY recommend!
I really enjoyed this class. He provides a study guide for each exam which helps a lot. I hardly used the textbook and still got an A in the class. He called random names from the roster at the beginning of class for attendance (points got deducted from your grade if you were not there). He is a very cool guy.
Dr. B is super easy and hilarious. You need the books, as weekly online assignments and paper require them, but you can just skim. Takes attendance, weekly online assignments, one paper, and one group poster project.
I absolutely loved Dr. Bardgill! A teacher who really cared about what we took from class to help our own lives. He is funny, witty, handsome, and keeps class interesting. Material is related to psychology b/c it highlights questions of human behavior and advice over centuries from great people. Great guy and teacher!
Prof. Bargdill is super funny, goofy and obviously loves what he does. Althought he claims that he wants the class to participate, he usually tells crazy stories that go on and on, often not relating to the course material. He put his own spin on the course to make it more interesting and I think it def worked. He's great.
Dr. Bargdill is awesome! I looked forward to his class every week. He is smart, witty, and SO funny. Class discussion was engaging and applicable to life. He can be brutally honest, but I found it to be rather refreshing. He talked to us like we were equals and while at that, gained the respect of a room full of college kids. Take his class!
hw assignments weekly on two books he assigns. no test no final except a final poster project presentation. calls names for attendance randomly. not hard class at all.
Aah, to have a spark in my soul like this man... He knows something.
What everyone says about is personality is true. He does make it easy to pay attention if you care about what he's trying to teach. i think this is the most boring class in the world - but it's not his fault. the midterm exam was difficult, he doesnt do a good job of telling you HOW to study for the test at all. HW assignments were easy.
Made a boring class interesting! Tests are MC and on point to class discussions. Should be an easy A. Takes random attendance- best to attend
This class was a huge waste of time. I learned nothing about history of psychology. I learned his opinions about things that have nothing to do with psychology. He is very vague when it comes to assignments. He doesn't post anything until 1-2 days before its due. He doesn't return any emails.
Great
Sometimes Bargdill's notes/tests/emails/expectations are unclear. He is sometimes VERY accommodating and sometimes not at all. He is the 'black sheep' of VCU's psych dept - he doesn't like stats, prefers qualitative, humanistic/phenomenological research, talks a lot about social justice, HATES the DSM, etc. Can be frustrating but awesome.
Absolutely terrible! So unwilling to help students or work with them to accommodate special circumstances. A very "my way or the highway" type of teacher. He can't stand to be wrong even tho he often is. His writing is very poor and hard to understand. Overall, TERRIBLE, do youself a favor and take ANY other history of psych professor!
I thought Dr. Bargdill was stellar! He is very open to student's interests: he let our class do research on topics of our choice, and I did mine on 'spirituality and the surreal.' Too cool! I think everyone going into research should take Qualitative Research Methods, because this stuff doesn't get taught otherwise. Great teacher, great class.
In lecture he promotes critical thought, but he fails to follow his own advice. Approaching him for help working around a problem, I was met with nothing but resistance and even hostility. Never have I blamed a professor for a grade I received, but in this case my final grade definitely did not fairly reflect the work I invested in the course.
If you want to take a history of psychology class with a professor who doesn't believe in mental illness and who talks about philosophy more than history, I'd say take him, except his grades don't reflect what he states on the syllabus, and attendance & participation are mandatory in a 200+ class. WORST CLASS IN 4 YEARS OF COLLEGE, DO NOT TAKE
Mildly a conspiracy theorist no doubt. If you follow his random phrases on the study guides you will do great on the midterm & final. As far as the poster, it's honestly about getting lucky with the judges. Didn't quite learn a chronological history of Psychology more like random philosophers and extreme/insane tangents to his life. Have patience!
The worst. Ever. Never went to class and still got a B. His notes are useless because they never make any sense, he doesn't discuss anything of relevance in class, just goes on insane tangents and will scream randomly for no reason. Most irritating class I've ever taken. But easy. You won't learn much about history of psych though.
He really tries, but comes up short. I would rather pull my teeth out than take another class with him again. He is boring and the test questions don't even come from the power points. You might as well just read the book and try to decipher the study guides and not even bother taking notes. He is funny, but makes an interesting subject very boring
A pretty nice guy but the class itself is awful. Didn't learn a thing about "history of psych." His lectures were more like random stories about his life, nothing ever pertained to the class. Weekly homework assignments are easy. No idea where the test questions came from. Poster project sucks. An A is attainable though.
His material on the exams are straight from the slides. Attend class and you'll do fine, and if you miss get the notes from someone. I didn't buy the book, but only like 2 questions from it are on the exam. He can also get a little catty when you ask him a question, it's kinda funny. He tells many stories during lecture which takes up time.
At first I thought I would hate his class, but I was pleasantly surprised. He's NOTHING like the other psychology professors, and I mean that in a good way. He's got so much to say, so much to offer. TAKE HIS CLASS! Follow his phrases on his study guides and you will do great.
Bargdill is great! He can get distracted during lectures and go off on tandems but they are always about how the information relates to his experiences and almost always there are questions on the tests about his stories and how they related to what we learned. He doesn't post lectures and does take attendance but the class goes by fast! Take him!!
Required course for psych majors, but more like a philosophy course. I didn't find the course content interesting, so discussions were boring. But weekly assignments are easily graded, and the 2 tests are fair as long as you use his review sheets and listen to his storiesclips in class. Poster final is tedious but graders seemed fair. Got an A!
FUN! I loved him! I would take another class with him! Detailed lectures, with funny stories, he does recommend you read the book but I read the book once and still got B's on most of my test. Just pay attention in class. He has few assignments and 4 test . He randomly calls names for attendance so make sure you're there the day he calls yours!
I noticed with students, they either love him or hate him. It is no "in the middle." I do not see why it is a capstone class, but still enjoyed his lectures. He takes attendance sometimes which sucks. 2 exams, final project (worth a lot), and 13 assignments due every week that is super easy, also you get a bread based on attendance.
I never found his class boring, and he always had lots of fun stories to share. He does not post the PowerPoints online, which I don't mind, and includes questions on the tests that are from the stories he shares. The tests are mostly based on the PowerPoints, with a few questions from the book. He also provides a very helpful study guide.
I took this class over the summer, so my experience may be different than others. But I really enjoyed his class though! It was interesting and really made you go home and just think about life, literally!! He had us do fun activities and thorough class discussions, so it was kind of cool hearing different stories from everyone.
Professor Bargdill is a very funny professor, his lectures are interesting most of the time sometimes it's easy to find yourself completing other work during it. He has very interesting stories and there is homework due before every class. If you have any issues email your TA first she is easier to work with.
Dr. B is probably one of my favorite professors at VCU so far. He's a very very funny guy and he goes off on a lot of tangents that lead to funny stories. Sometimes his slides aren't very clear and it doesn't help that he doesn't put them online. There is one paper which is optional if you have a C or higher by the second test.
Would not recommend, nor take again. Tends to go on rants, easily distracted.
Dr. Bargdill is extremely witty, smart, and humorous. I learned about so many different psychologists in his class, and he always made his lectures interesting. He also informed students about current events as well as other relevant news. I thoroughly enjoyed going to his classes and would say it was my favorite class this semester!
Dr. Bargdill is great. He is very funny and offers a lot of insight. Would recommend going to class because things he mentions in class will be on the test. Only downside is that sometimes the lecture slides can be unclear and he doesn't post them online. Overall, great professor and great class.
Bargdill is a great professor. He goes off on tangents a lot but still gets through the material. You'll learn a lot outside of the topics, first 15 minutes he talks about his FB psych page. If you go to class and listen, youll learn a lot and do well on the tests. His goal is to make us laugh and be astonished each class, usually does it!!
I loved his class!
My experience with Dr. Bargdill was great! He does take attendance every class, but his lectures are pretty interesting and he always tells stories that make the concepts easier to grasp. I will say that his slides sometimes are worded in a confusing way, but overall great class! If you simply do the work and study your notes, you'll get an A.
The grade came entirely from the exams. Sometimes the questions would be about random stories he told in class. I had to write down almost every detail he said in class because it was all fair game. I ended up doing well, but it was a stressful class. Do not skip class.
Dr. Bargdill is a great professor! He does go on to tell funny stories (some he does mention on exams). Make sure to study the book and his lecture notes for exams because he does ask questions from both. Go to class because he takes attendance and he does not post his notes to Blackboard! Lastly, pay attention to due dates because no reminders!
Dr. Bargdill was literally and undoubtedly my favorite teacher in my time at VCU. First of all, he's definitely a little 'out there' (kind of ADD, goes off on random tangents, etc.) but he's brilliant and incredibly wise. Light homework and easy exams, but make sure to put in work on your capstone project.
His class was fine as long as you study you can get an A. Lectures were boring and he went on tangents, which did show up on the test. His tests are fair, as long as you do the study guide you'll definitely pass them. He does give an extra credit paper which is pretty easy and can help boost points. If I tried harder I would've gotten an A.
Great professor and thinker out of the box person. Tests are hard but if you do assignments and readings you can have a great grade in the class. participate and you will be rewarded. This class is not easy but an A is achievable.
He was so funny and made it extremely easy to learn. I didn't use the textbook and I did fine in the class. His tests are mostly what is taught in lecture, but there is a little stuff from the book. He takes attendance rando
He's a good person but his lectures are very repetitive. He goes on so many tangents you end up only going through 1-2 powerpoint slides a class. But I didn't get the book and just dealt with his lectures and got a good grade
Bargdill was one of the least enjoyable classes I've taken. I had to take this for my major and I wish I took literally any other professor, he goes through like 3 slides in an entire class which is ridiculous. His slides aren't on BB but they're so abbreviated and written in short hand they're hard to even read. Take someone else.
Bargdill is a sweetheart, but he goes on many tangents and each lecture usually only gets through 3 slides which can be annoying. The slides aren't posted online, and they are very broad so his tangents help sometimes, otherwise read the book. He asks questions on the tests about things he talked about in class, as well as from the book.
He's an okay professor. The class is made harder than it should be and his exam questions are tricky. He also takes forever to get through one slide during lectures and go on tangents.
I'm surprised that he doesn't have better reviews. The class wasn't too hard, and the lectures were interesting. He does take awhile to get thru them, but as long as you look at the study guide and use the book, the exams really weren't bad at all. You just have to put in some work . He gives extra credit. I missed a paper and still got an A.
Lectures are interesting if you have read the material and have a sort of understanding of it interpretations. Lecture are long winded, he lectures the entire time. Test are challenging if you miss class and do not take notes to what he says and not much so on what is on the presentation. SO MUCH MORE I CAN SAY TAKE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
PowerPoint slides are jam packed & useless. Basically getting our info from the books and his lecture by mouth. He's funny but if this class wasn't required I would of dropped it well before hand. So far , everything is unclear on what I should or should not focus on for the exams. we have to sit in groups every class I absolutely hate it
He teaches with ppts, but he takes a long time to go through the powerpoints, he goes off topic a lot, and his test questions can be a bit tricky, you might feel like you got an A on a test but you actually got like a C. He also has a tendency to express his own opinion a lot, rather than be objective about certain things. but not a terrible prof.
I'm surprised Bargdill doesn't have better reviews. It's true he only goes through a couple slides a class, but his lectures are funny. He tells lots of stories, which show up on exams. You have to go to class for this reason (plus he takes random attendance). If you pay attention and do the study guides, you'll get a good grade. Little hw.
He has long winded lectures. Honestly I think that he's fine you just have to study outside of class. In his PSYC304 class has 4 reflections, but they take like 10 minutes to do and they are an easy A. His tests are pretty hard so you have to study. If you miss class make sure to read the chapter you miss and get the notes.
One of my favorite professors! So funny, I also dont know why his reviews arent better. Some classes drag, but he tells stories to make it more entertaining. As long as you use the slides and study guides for tests you should do fine! Textbook isnt that necessary...
Pros: interesting personality, not very strict, not many assignments, allows phones/computers. Cons: injects irrelevant political perspectives into conversation (watch out if you're a Republican), goes off on long tangents, some of which will be on the test.. you're stuck trying to discern what you need to know, does not cover a lot of material
Bargdill is a great guy and he is super funny. However his slides make 0 sense and are not posted to Blackboard. He does not make you read the textbook, but his tests are based on the textbook not lectures. Additionally he takes 5 million years to grade anything so good luck knowing what your grade is.
Dr. Bargdill was a fantastic professor! His lectures were what we were tested on (Including personal stories). The grading for this semester was done by the TA who was VERY lazy and never took the time to grade. His class was great and he's so caring and a good person at heart. Definitely take his class, IDK why he doesn't have better reviews
Professor Bargdill is great- he always made me laugh during lecture which helped me learn material. He does get into story telling but it is usually related to whatever you're learning and can even end up on the test so be sure to pay attention. Tests can be hard but just take good notes, listen, and study. One of my favorite professors for sure
He makes this history of psych course a philosophical discussion about finding Meaning and Happiness in life! Lectures are entertaining and inspirational. He gives minimal homework and the tests are easy with little effort! I LOVE this guy and this class!
I think he is a great teacher. His lectures are long and he can get distracted but it is always interesting. He teaches by powerpoint but doesn't go through many so just make sure you take notes on what he says and study for the test. He has little assignments where you can get easy points but other than that he doesn't assign homework.
LOVED this class. I always knew that whatever would be discussed would be insightful and applicable to life. I feel like I have learned more of the material specifically because his teaching style is so captivating. HW is reading chapters of real books and writing what you found interesting. Super easy. Gives a couple extra credit opportunities.
He tends to go off topic a lot and his slides are a hot mess. He's funny but the classes are just boring. His tests are kinda hard, some questions aren't in the textbook or his lectures at all. The extra credit helped me get an A in his class.
Kind, funny & a little eccentric. 2 tests, a final (was supposed to be a poster project but covid19 prevented that) and 11 very easy assignments. You will learn interesting things in this class. Highly recommend.
Goes on too many tangents. A fun and chatty professor is cool, but not when we only get through 3 slides in a 75 minute lecture. He falls behind in the curriculum almost immediately, and told us to look up the info in the book for whatever he didn't get to. Doesn't post the powerpoints online, so it's class or the book. I'd choose the book.
Guy think's he's a unicorn. Needs to show more intention and social consciousness with his endless spiels of nonsense. Other than that, easy class.
His tests are hard! I remember studying for days before a test and still not getting a decent grade. Paying attention in class is important, because he throws in questions about stuff he talks about in class and doesn't post power points. His study guides are very disorganized + confusing. He is a funny guy but takes forever to go through one slide
This professor is a mess. A complete mess. He is extremely disorganized, his PowerPoints are all over the place with multiple errors, he rarely responds when you email him. He clearly doesn't care about his students. He definitely displays classic signs and symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder too!
Bargdill's online class is a disaster. Your "lectures" will be audio recordings attached to powerpoint slides that ramble on for 10 minutes per slide (and no option to speed them up). So many typos. He's also into humanist psychology, so be ready for a lot of lame holistic aphorisms as he struggles to explain the science.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. worse class ive ever taken. Bargdill makes you buy this terrible book he wrote that makes no sense. His lectures are 4-5 slides a chapter with messy notes and he rambles for 10 mins every slide, then asks questions from personal stories on his exam. "what happened when my wife was giving birth."Ive never been so frustrated
I took this class as an online asynchronous course. There were multiple (easy) homework assignments due each week based on the chapter that was covered & extra credit was offered more than once. The class only had a midterm & a final. For a capstone, this was a really easy class.
These reviews are extremely wrong and are written by people who want to breeze through powerpoints, not digest the material or use it in their everyday lives, and forget they're in college learning about their future career. Bargdill makes sure you digest each point on his slides and him using his experiences are only to benefit you. GREAT CLASS!
Weird that it's an asynchronous class and his tests have questions asking about his personal stories that he talks about in optional online lectures. But as long as you study a little bit before the tests and do all the easy homework, it's an easy class.
I honestly feel like I didn't learn much in this course. The professor isn't super helpful/accommodating and the online lectures were soo dragged out. The exams were a bit tedious but as long as you complete the assignments and watch the lectures you should do fine. He does offer extra credit that's very helpful too.
Even though he is online, he is very good at teaching. In his slide shows that he posts weekly, he inputs audio within each slide and he explains all the information on the given slide. Barely any work for this class besides a reflection due once a week and the notes. Only 3 exams in this class, the third one is the "final".
There are weekly assignments that occasionally require the textbook. It is easy to find the textbook for cheap, but I wasn't able to find it online. The exams are based on what he talks about in lectures and slides so if you don't write down just about every comment he makes about a topic then you'll get at least 5 questions wrong on each exam.
Like other reviews said, his tests make almost zero sense if you aren't in his lectures. Which you obviously aren't if you take him asynch, so his tests are pretty much guaranteed to get you points off. Look- if you're expecting to learn something and/or get an A, his class is not for you. If you wanna get a B or C while gaining nothing, go for it.
Important Tip: You MUST listen to the audio on his slides to understand the tests. He legit never clarifies this (one of many problems with his exams) but the audio on the slides is very different from what's actually written on the slides themselves and contains most of the more specific answers to the test questions. Why? Idk. Terrible class tbh
Professor Bargdill wrote a book that he requires you to get. You will get 2 extra credit opportunities along with an optional paper. You have 3 exams that are open notes but they are timed I suggest reading the chapters and listen to his power points. He rabbles a lot in the power points and there are 10 reflections that are due every week .
This professor had an average course load. I think that if you take the time to go over the lectures and read and take notes on the slides the class should be somewhat easy. However, he does have specific things he is looking for within his lectures that can be difficult to remember if you don't closely and take detailed notes.
if you actually want to learn about developmental psych, avoid bargdill at all costs. he wrote his own textbook that he makes you buy, and it's all just preaching garbage with an obvious bias toward humanistic psych. his slides have typos and he goes on off topic rants saying nothing useful. he is funny, but it doesn't make up for anything
Lacks basic empathy and is self centered.
He seems like a decent guy, but his slides and lectures are extremely disorganized. He goes on occasionally funny/bizarre tangents in class and will ask questions on them in tests. The lectures don't prepare you for the tests imo. Other than tests, it's basically just reflections on chapters from the required book, which are easy.
Bargdill is certainly an oddball. The majority of his classes are him talking about random personal anecdotes which he eventually relates back to the material. Sweet guy, but I didn't get too much out of the class. Would recommend him for this class though because it's easy and not too much is asked of students. Only two, easy, open-note tests.
key points: - weekly homework with his textbook (99% quotes from other psychologists, 1% Bargdill jargon) - you don't do anything but listen to him read slides in lecture, but it's mandatory random graded attendance
Professor Bardill takes a long time to go over very little info. He takes a 1hr 15 min class to go over about 3-4 slides and will have test questions about his random personal stories. He wrote the textbook which is incredibly short and can be hard to follow. In addition, he sometimes says things that are not factual or kinda offensive.
The professor has a unique teaching style, but if you engage with it, you can learn a lot. The lectures can be disorganized, but the textbook and Unstuckstudy are helpful for study prep. Overall, not the easiest class, but manageable if you stay on top of the work.
He will make you spend around $100 to buy a textbook that HE wrote (for any of his classes). He has not responded to any of my emails, and has weird deadlines (assignments due at 2pm). This class is easy, but if you have a lot going in your life, he won't really care, at least in my personal experience. Weekly readings and assignments.
Overall easy class to pass. The way he takes attendance is randomly calling 25 names each class. He averages this out, so if you miss one day and that's the day he called your name, your attendance grade will show lower than just missing one day. He puts many questions about his personal life on exams. Completely unfair but will affect your grade.
He takes 1hr 30mins to get through 4 slides. Slides are abbreviated and don't make any sense. He rambles on and on and says some crazy offensive stuff. There is no communication outside of class and he doesn't care if you are struggling. The tests have personal questions that no one cares about. The attendance policy is way unfair too, just saying.
This professor could care less about students.Shows no empathy.Should a student have an issue or 504 medical this professor does the least required to meet State or Federal standard and will gladly fail any students even if they have a very high grade.
This professor does not care about his students and is very unreasonable. No matter how much you communicate with him, he will try no effort to understand.
Dr Barg cares about people. He may spend a whole day on 2 slides but you will learn more doing that then if you blew right through them. He's a very open soul who cares about what he's telling you, my favorite quote "This won't be on any test, except the test of life" applied greatly to the entire course.
He goes over like one slide per class, the rest of the time is spent telling personal stories and going off on unimportant tangents. The tests have so many questions about what he talked about in class and not actual material. He's also a tad misogynistic and says some ignorant things occasionally. Wouldn't recommend.
He'll take an entire class to go through a few slides because he gets sidetracked and tells an irrelevant story that you end up being tested on, and the slides are badly organized and have weird abbreviations that he doesn't explain. He also says some sexist and offensive things sometimes
Don't even know what to say. Useless lectures which went so slow, but also sometimes funny and interesting. Randomly called attendance but you can predict when not to skip. All exams online/open note. One a week easy homework assignment using his person textbook (only $10). Raffled off his personal items on Tuesdays. Bizarre but charming guy.
