very clear in lectures. personable teacher but difficult tests
Too bad the guy only talks about movies... way to teach
Clear and concise. Knows his stuff! The course was a six week summer course. It went quite fast.
Guy knows his stuff, changes it up with real world stats. Good students should have no problems in his class. Very personable, highly recommend.
You need to know some tricks from previous Math classes. He likes to test students from details, though he is a nice man. He is helpful and funny.
I'm very happy to take classes from a instructor like him.
A little bit hard, but absolutely one of my all-time favorite teachers. His goal isn't to get you to get the right anwers on the test; it's to get you to UNDERSTAND what you're doing and stretch your mind, and therefore will get the right answers.
He is the best math teacher there is at Butte College!~
Nice teacher..
He's a good teacher and a very nice caring guy. He cares about his students and wants them to do the best possible in his class, but doesn't dumb down the subject matter.
I don't like math. But Mr. Bigler made statistics interesting. Clone him!
I am horrible at math and dreaded taking Stats. But his summer class was very interesting, fun and I actually got a B! Not that much homework considering it was a short term class. Great at explaining how to work through problems. Great film critic too
He is very good. You don't want to miss his class. He is Awesome.
Bigler made it very clear on what exactly we needed to know...especially for tests. His tests were very easy. Very easy to approach and very funny! It's amazing on how up-to-date his is on the pop culture!
he is the best teacher I have ever had in my whole life. If you have a chance take his class. You will love math!!!
This teacher is so full of himself if he got anymore full he would burst. He has personal issues that get infused in the class. He creates competitive attitudes and refuses to be accountable for this. He thrives on suppressing those medium level math majors. Unless you are a wizard, don't take him.
one of the best instructors i have taken in butte. he has a nice sense of humor and makes the class interesting yet we are still learning. gosh he knows more pop culture than i would ever know, i recommend this teacher, he's very helpful ^_^
Easiest class ever! He is very interesting so you will love the class.
Dood he is the best teachers ever... he passed me because I tried hard... I respect this dude.. he is the ****en man good luck bigler much love to ya homie..
I found Mr. Bigler's style to be very effective for someone like me who is mathematically challenged. He's a sharp, funny, nice guy. Put some effort into his class and you will do well.
Statistics is not my favorite subject, but Mr. Bigler made it interesting. I had to work my butt off to get a B (summer course).

This is the teacher that stimulated and promoted my love of math and made my goal of being a mth professor very real. Helpful, interesting, interestED, and totally enjoyable. Everything i want in a teacher.
He is the best instructor ever. He makes the class interesting with his funny stories. He takes care of his students and try to help them as long a he can. If you have a chance jsut take his class and you wouldn't wanna miss a lecture.
he looks like the kind of guy that belongs at a grateful dead show but he is the coolest math teacher in the world. he is also the nerdiest and admits to doing math for fun on the weekends and gets excited over a new math book. he knows so much cool stuff that he inspired me to actually look through my textbook on the weekends and check out the math section at Barnes and Noble. everyone should take his classes he will amuse the hell out of you.
What can I say about Mr. Bigler? He is a nice guy, and he's good at helping students understand the concepts. He keeps his political opinions outside the classroom, which is good. He can be a little (for lack of a better term) passive-aggressive with certain students who sit in the back and neglect their work, but I can't complain. Take his class.
Really great guy, totally interesting. Not always clear enough in teaching, sometimes spends too much time talking about current events. But he took away a lifetime of math anxiety, and made the class fun to attend (even though it was early in the morning). Understanding. Pretty easy grader. DESERVES your attention!
Best math teacher i ever had. Sometimes you forget it's a math class, which could be annoying to some. But the guy is the kind of teacher who relates that stuff to the real world. He is one of the teachers you'll remember the rest of your life in a good way.
Mr. Bigler is an excellent teacher. I highly recommend him for stats, even if it's in the summer. He is a very fair grader and keeps the class interesting and he's very funny. He is by far the best math teacher I've ever had.
Great!

He is ancredibly clear and helpfull teacher. He really likes his students and it shows.
Bigler is very helpful and fun. I forgot that I was in a math class at 7:30 in the morning.
I really think that Mr. B is a good teacher and that he knows what is going on.
Mr. Richard Bigler can come off as weird, and tends to suck up to the females at the class...but I find him helpful teacher with good, clear instruction. Mr. Bigler requires, but is easy on the homework assigned, and tries to make all classwork understandable.
Spends about 30 minutes of class teaching unrelated material. He assigns HW that never picks up, but when he does calls it a quiz. Confronting him is not best idea, he takes your argument runs it through a truth table in his head then looks at you stupid. because of course he is right and questioning him is just obsurd. very closed minded.
He was very helpful. I learned a lot. He is very funny and uses his time wisely. He really tries to get to know you.
he is extremely helpful teachs it so it is clear and understandable...also teaches things that are about the world and interesting facts makes it interesting...very willing to help you out and give the class the best benifits possible learn a lot and understant it too
if youre on his good side he will suck up to you all semester, especially to girls. i was on his bad side and he hated me. on the last day he even yelled at me. he always thinks hes right about EVERYTHING, but he is also funny sometimes i admit. before your used to him hes like the weirdest guy on the planet. he goes off topic a lot!
this dude is by far the worst professor i have had at butte. he does not explain things well at all, and is very one sided. he thinks his opinion is superior to everyone and if u state ur opinion he will tell u that ur wrong. i hate walkin into that class....so everyone DO NOT TAKE LOGIC WITH THIS DUDE...GOOOO FAR AWAY!!!
I loved this guy! He is hilarious and always takes time to teach you something that has nothing to do with math, just something interesting about life. He tends to assume that everyone understands everything the first time he explains them but when asked he is very helpful. His tests are pretty easy and his quizzes are as well.
Mr. Bigler is a spectacular teacher, and it is evident that he enjoys teaching. I took his Logic (Math 7) class, and I gained a lot of understanding about the material. His teaching style is laid-back. Warning: Read (and understand) the material before you come to class. It is imperative because his teaching is based on the textbook.
best overall teacher ive ever had if you have the chance take this guy. people either seem to love or hate him i loved him.
He is an AWESOME teacher and i loved his teaching because he teaches very AWESOME!!! I like how he teaches and he is just AWESOME!!! I understood what was going on in math and he says everyone learns in different ways. COOL TEACHER!!! He doesn't even use the textbook and the teachings is understanding!!!
Least boring math class ever! This teacher is fun and interesting! He teaches the math in a way that makes it pretty easy to understand. He also starts very interesting conversations that relate to math. Homework everyday, but its easy-going. Take this class if you want to learn & have fun.
HAHAHA!! bigler's awesome!!!!
Let's see, I learned about strawberry jam and hard diamonds, heard a lot about his family everyday....lots of cool stories. Taught things that weren't on test. Homework everynight. One of the top 3 teachers I've had in 5yrs of school.
Mr. Bigler... What can i say? His class is very interesting you will never be bored. I like the guy personally, but just don't disagree with him cause he will shoot you down. He thinks that he is smart (which he is), but can be somewhat insulting at times. Very funny, old dude... Likes girls alot, don't miss lecture or you'll be screwed.
He is a really great teacher and i would recommend him to anyone who ask about taking math classes
Mr. Bigler actually made math fun for me to learn. I understood the terminology for the first time. Great teacher!
He's a great teacher. Likes to tell stories and can get off topic quickly, but he's funny and easy to learn from. His constant story telling makes it easier to concentrate in class.
Mr Bigler is an amazing professor!! He teaches in a different style..those who really want to learn will appreciate him most. He really challenges you to help yourself and discover things on your own. He likes to be a little tricky but he is forgiving in the end. One of the BEST professors I've had!
He is one of the coolest/best teachers i have ever had awesome guy. Very Clear and very helpful
Clearly has class pets and shows little interest (almost disdain) for those he does not consider "deserving" of his attention. Casual teaching style, good real life examples and class is not boring, would still recommend class. He certainly knows the subject he is teaching, just wish he wouldn't pick and choose those he deems worthy of his effort.
Take him. Seriously. Trust me, just take him. He is brilliant. You will think at first that he is confusing and seem lost in the class, but he knows so well what will happen and helps accordingly. He sees your potential and grades accordingly. Interesting and very brilliant, honest man. Goes off topic in a fun way though. Makes stats fun. :)
I have great respect for this instructor. Great teaching style, excellent lectures(both entertaining and highly informative). Wants you to truly understand the material, not just pass tests...and helps you accomplish both.
Extremely difficult. Goes off on a tangent all the time, and his attitude, he is right, you are wrong. Worksheets are worthless, book teaches different style, and questioning him is just absurd. He will pull out his unreasonable logic and make it say you are wrong. What kind of teaching is, "Oh the answer is obvious", with no explanation?
Mr. B. is a great professor. I am an A student , however math is not one of my strengths. Mr B. helped me to feel comfortable in this clas and also helped me feel successful. I would recomend him to any student. If you don't do well in this class it's on you, not him. BTW- he does NOT play favorites, if you are dedicated, so is he.
Bigler is an okay teacher. He does indeed have favorites, and they are always women. Had him for calc 2 also. He is simply an average teacher. The people here shouting his brilliance are the few class "pets" he has each class...
Good teacher but his tendency for blatant flirtation with the younger women in the class creates somewhat of an unsettling learning atmosphere. This being said, if you can get past his arrogant personality and an endless flurry of esoteric rhetoric, then there does exist the potential to glean knowledge from his classes.
Got an A in the class. This class should not have been as tough as it was. The material was insanely easy. I just had to spend lots of time teaching myself how to do it because he lectured super fast so that he could probably have more time to rant about irrelevant material. He "Definitely" has favorites and they are "Definitely" always women.
Can be denigrating of students. Good teacher otherwise. He teases people occasionally which can be uncomfortable to some people without emotional fortitude. I was one of those, I got an A, so it's not grade related.
Bigler is a GOOD teacher. It Stats, its very important to have a GOOD teacher. My 1st time taking Math 18 was bad...Carey Kidd...(worst teacher in my life) But Bigler was funny, organized, clear explanations, easy to approach, loves math, & will work with you to help you pass. I give him an "A." C.Kidd..."F." Good Advice
Bigler is great. I had terribly boring math teachers at my high school, and Bigler made me excited to take the class from the first day. He makes Stats easy, which I've heard can be difficult for most. Hardly ever use the book, don't have to turn in homework, but have to show up to class to stay informed. Great teacher!
By far the best/my favorite teacher I have ever had
My unluckly number came up twice as a student in one of Bigler's classes, and I dropped both times. He makes inappropriate remarks on a regular basis. Doesn't teach math, just assumes we all "get it" before ever seeing the material. Uses the remaining classtime to poison young minds.
hard just really hard teacher
Goes through material way too fast. Just assumes that you know everything about stats. Lets the smart people do the problems on the board without showing how they got the answer. "The answer is obvious " does not help us. Waste class time talking about useless info. Also very full of himself
Mr. Bigler's calc 3 was prob. the hardest class I've ever taken, which includes a yr of calc based physics. The material wasn't too hard, and he was good at awnsering questions, but his test are brutal.
It was an alright class, whenever students tried to clarify, he had a condescending response. Almost disheartening to see hope go down the drain as the semester transpired.
Awesome teacher. Explained the content to the point where reading the text book wasnt even necissary. Kept the class very interesting with random facts and pop culture.
Doesn't actually teach math during lectures, just talks about other things. I took so little away from his lectures and ended up teaching myself Calc 3. Tests are abstract and impossible to study for. Highest grades on the first two exams were an F and a D respectively. Highest grade in the class at the end was a B. Take Campbell for Calc 3!
He is a good teacher and I think you do better in the class if you have an easier time with math. He makes it interesting, but the class will be difficult if you do not attend. Doesn't really collect homework, but it does help when you do it. Is very personable and easy to talk too. Overall I am glad that I had him for my stat teacher!
He talks too fast, test are insane, and he talks about himself and his "best friend" Campbell all the time. If you're not a math geek and straight A student, you're gonna struggle.
It's Calculus 3 and he managed to relate the material to me in a manner of which I am truly appreciative. Now that I am in Vector Mechanics I laugh at the puny homework that lies ahead. Thanks Mr. B, I took pattern recognition and problem solving to heart and now am reveling at the ease at which I am finding the classes I am currently enrolled in!!
Probably one of the best math teachers I have ever had. He spends a lot of time using analogies that bring the math to life and make it fun. Which is what it is for him. Example, Mr B teaches upper lvl math. he teaches beginning algebra for fun. He flirts and he teases, but I see it as a means to ease the anxiety that most have for math. "A+" MrB
Great teacher who really knows what he's talking about. If you know the material you will do great on his tests. Just can't fall behind.
Bigler is a very funny and entertaining professor who thinks he is always right. He always has great stories to tell, though. And he teaches really fast. If you are bad at math, keep up on all his assignments and seek clarification from someone other than him as he is not very eager to explain.
Not a teacher. Not an instructor. Not a professor. Do not be fooled, he is actually a guy who gets paid to crack jokes during a bi-weekly comedy hour while you teach yourself Calculus 3 at home. You are then given exams that do not cover any of the material in class, the book, or the homework. 100% of my peers received F's for all but one exam.
Teaches what he wants you to know for ~20min then talks about life lessens for the remaining time. Really funny and interesting stories and great at teaching when hes teaching. There is actually very little for him to go over so he can get away with it
I did not like taking statistics, but Mr. B does thoroughly explain things in the lectures; if anyone has any questions, he explains it. He assigns homework, but doesn't collect it. The homework will help you though if you choose to do it. Lectures are kept short. He does like to talk about life and what not... keeps it interesting :)
Great teacher, leave your ego at home.
I have read through the reviews on here. People saying "the highest grade was a B" and "exams had mostly D's and F's" makes me laugh, since I got an A and many of my peers did. He teaches you what you need to know to form a mathematical basis. Then, you need to go home and READ the textbook and do problems. He's tough, but made better.
He's a great teacher, he knows how to push you to do better than you ever thought you could, in my case inspiring me to do better in every facet of my academic pursuits. He's also very approachable and understands life happens so he'll take certain things into consideration. Lectures can seem off topic but always come back to the math being taught
I had Mr. Bigler for statistics. He would come into class 10 minutes late everyday, and was never prepared. He taught our class more about magic tricks, and his family, rather than actual statistics. Our grade was 100% based on tests, no homework, and no extra credit. A LOT of self teaching and tutors are very necessary. I would not recommend him.
Great professor. Hard class, but that was because it was Calc 3. He comes to class every day, and can sometimes go off on tangents while talking to the class. He is funny, nice, and does his best to make sure you really understand the material. Absolutely recommend. Overall grade: A
Bigler could have been a plank of wood in front of a whiteboard and I'd have gotten the same grade. And that's the point. I had to teach myself calc III and calc I and now I've lost the real meaning behind the math; what you're supposed to get from the instructor. Everyone who got a good grade in his class didn't even need him to be there AVOID HIM
The class is a high level math class so skip a day and you would do better to learn German solo. He does a very exceptional job working you through the problem and then explaining what you just did in simpler terms. Yes, the class gets off topic often. It somehow rebounds back on track. The whole grade is test heavy so study with classmates.
Almost the entire grade relies on test scores, but Bigler is happy to help during his office hours
Im HORRIBLE with math & after failing statistics for the first time I took stats again with him & I passed with almost an A. There was very little homework and a lot of in class work which was what I needed. Idk about his other classes but statistics is really enjoyable with him & thats coming from someone whos math inept lol
I had him for Calc3 & Diffs. He will make you work for a good grade. He goes on tangents often which are insightful/funny but still covers the material. He rarely collects HW as 90% of your grade is test based. Skip class/don't do HW and you will struggle. Seems difficult to approach him but he is helpful.
Great teacher. I enjoyed going to his class . He seems scary to approach, but he is a nice and very helpful. His tangents are often funny and make you think in a different ways, and he still got through all the material.
He was able to teach the content while also offering interesting insights into other topics. Ive taken him for stats as well as a calculus class and differential equations. He is one of those professors that really make a positive impact and youll probably remember that impact the rest of your life.
If you don't want to spend the semester teaching yourself what your teacher should have taught you in class, don't take Bigler for Calc 3. He wasted 90% of our lectures going on unrelated rants, because apparently "everything has to do with math". Your entire grade is based on the tests and the few homework assignments he has you turn in with them.
I enjoyed Bigler overall and would 100% take him again simply because I really enjoyed his teaching method. Frankly, I understand why people dislike him. He can be crass and rude, but he's a solid professor and I genuinely think he cares about his students. Take him, but be prepared to be self-motivated. There's no roll no homework only tests.
All your grade depends on tests and a couple hw assignments. That may sound good but legit half the Q's on tests he gives do not mimic examples he's given in lecture nor homework. His lectures were also challenging 1/3 of the time due to insufficient explanation. Through learning on my own time, the concepts weren't too bad, but his tests were.
Take Bigler if you want to teach yourself. Half of lecture is spent talking about his idols, from Taylor Swift and Adele, to Newton and Green. Tests are 100% of your grade. Do the homework and handouts, they make up approximately 30% of the test. Be neat and organized with your work. He will drop your grade if work is not easily followed.
Mr. Bigler gave great statistics in real life situations and future possible situations. What he gives you is what will be on exams. Communicates easily with students whether struggling or staying on path with the course. Has great recommendations on outlets for students to use. Would recommend if needing course to graduate.
Bigler, man what a teacher. A lot of the time we don't even talk about math, but when we do he tries to have some fun with us. No online homework; its all on worksheets. Never regretted taking this class at all (besides the one time he roasted me.)
Every day is a rollercoaster. Story about his awesome life? Discuss an NPR puzzle? Infinite series & ODE's? Who knows! Test in 3 days or 3 weeks? You'll find out! Will it cover recent topics? Maybe! Tests are inversely proportional to lecture difficulty. If you're good at math, go for it. He does have a sense of humor. No clue why he's rated high
Math is a course that I struggle the most just attend his class and show him you want to pass. In my experience Great teacher! Enjoy all the statistical knowledge. Half of the time we don't do math but I'm okay with it because I'm not a math person but most importantly enjoyed all the things he talk about in the beginning of the class.
I feel like I've learned more about history in his class than Calculus. He's a cool guy, but he's always distracted by random thoughts that are not math-related at all. I think he would make a good History professor instead. Also, he tends to write really difficult/messy math problems on the board and then the entire class would always get confused
Class with Rich was probably one of the worst experiences I have ever had. He hardly teaches, complains about this generation, and talks about how we should already know what he teaches when he actually teaches. About 20% of what he talks about is actually on the test, the other 80% is random curriculum that was never taught.
Great experience.
Classes with Bigler are a real challenge. He is brilliant and clearly knows what he's doing, but he's very bad at helping us understand him. His lectures are confusing and he frequently gets distracted and will waste half of classes talking about literature or world news, but still expect us to know what he skipped teaching. Avoid him if possible.
Bigler is a cool guy. His lectures were pure entertainment and I believe he would have been fired in 5 mins if anyone evaluated him. What he writes on the board might be related to math. He uses examples that are impossible to solve. For my final, I gave it to him, he closed his eyes and weighed it with his hands, then shouted a grade (B) out loud
