He is arrogant, opinionated, self-centered and abrupt. He thinks he knows everything about film. He doesn't. He certainly does not know how to encourage students!
Great teacher... funny
Needs to cheer up! Stuck-up at times.. Needs to realize he doesn't live in Hollywood or Beverly Hills. Seems like he's surrounded by Negative/Bad Karma.
this guys is a total ****... he is so full of himself... he is not helpful or clear on what he is teaching....
this guy is lost in the sauce. He is so into himself, he cant even look back at the class. what...a...loser

Handed out "pretests" or lists on what to study to prepare the class. I dont know why so many people dont talk about the teacher's methods vs. their personality. He was overall a straight forward teacher, not for the lighthearted, but then again, aren't we in school to challenge ourselves?
Don't take this class, if you think its easy. You're not going to ride through this class by just watching movies. His personality is somewhat funny, if you get him. And I personally don't think he prepares you enough for the 3-4 quizes and 2 exams he gives. Bottom line: not a happy ending.
He was a stuck up prentious git who was so full of himself that he couldn't go out on a limb & get the students interested. He had no compassion for anyone or anything other then himself & his "brillant" films that were usually so odd that you couldn't write the paper you were supposed to on them.
HE DOESN'T CLARIFY WHAT IS EXPECTED ON TESTS AND QUIZES. CLASS LECTURES ARE BORING AND SOMETIMES OFFENSIVE TO OTHER STUDENTS. OVERALL I WOULDN'T RECCOMEND THIS CLASS OR TEACHER.
Don't listen to these other reviewers. Boeck may have a somewhat stuck-up air about him, but that's just part of his schtick/appeal, and he's a pretty funny/cool guy. He's not really all that hard; he grades fairly, and if you pay attention in class, you'll do well. Give this guy a chance!
man oh man, all these reviews were right on the money. hes arrogant, and not very approachable. he scrares me haha
It’s true that he isn’t the most helpful teacher one-on-one. But he does know his stuff and is clear in lecturing. His classes aren’t too hard but they’re not EASY either. If you show up, pay attention, and keep up with the reading you should be fine in any of his classes.
Interesting Class
Boeck is AWESOME. all you people just don't understand his sarcasm. he's fair and tells you ahead of time everything that is expected. if you watch the films, go to the lecture, and just pay attention every now and then your cool.
He was my Adviser for the Connection. You gotta meet those deadlines.

HORRIBLE! being opinionated is one thing, but being such an a$$ about it, as he is, is another.i needed the credits, but he made it so UNBEARABLE that i had to drop... look for another teacher, but a fair warning, ms. gulati is not much better.

Boeck is awesome. Its funny that everyone hates him, its only because he knows his stuff and all his students want to think that they are his intellectual matches. Umm, i don't argue with a guy who has a master's degree in soemthing that i don't. Leave him alone, guy is awesome.
The class was fun most of the time. I took it about 3 years ago, and really cant think of anything remarkable that I learned. I did get a B in the class even though I didnt turn in one big paper for the class. He thought he lost it I guess. Oh well, it benefited me!
I felt as if he truely cared about the learned thoughts and opinions that his pupils formulate as they increasingly understand the nature of how the communications operate. He doesn't pick on you if you are a little tardy, but respects a student's good attendance. He's got a subtle little sense of humor that I really enjoyed, too.
mr.boeck is a great teacher. he actually cares about what and who heis teaching. I really enjoyed his class although he did talk sometimes it was well worth my time. If you are considering journalism or communications the mr.boeck is the way to go! GREAT JOB MR.BOECK
Professor Boeck is a bit on the weird side. He goes off of subject sometimes and talks about the weirdest things, that kind of creeped me out. His lectures aren't very clear and gives study guides that are just waaaaay to long, I ended up dropping the class.
Loved the class, loved what he taught! I still catch myself noticing the things he taught us when I watch movies. It's hard work, but it's worth it.
i have act taken two of mr. boeck classes film history and mass media and i did fine in both classes i didnt read the book i came for the review for the tests an as long as u do that u will do fine in his class hes a cool guy a lot of people think hes has a sick sense of humor i think hes funny an honest sometimes the truth hurts!!
He's an easy teacher, but you'll still learn a lot (a hard combination to find). He does tend to belittle the class as a whole, but doesn't single out any individual. Attend all of the lectures and you'll do fine. He didn't use the book much. His reviews tell you everything that'll be on the test, and he only assigns two simple research papers.
Rick is a phenominal teacher. His persona in the way he presents his lectures reminds me a whole lot of Garrison Keillor. From something as simple as film, I have and am still learning so much things I never observed before. If I could, I would definitely take his class again. Who knows? Maybe I will.
Rick was sarcastic and belittled us. I was intimidated! But determined to pass the class and I did!!
Mr. Boeck is an easy teacher. There are only 2 or 3 homework assignments. You do half to read the text book for the 10 point quizzes wich you should do because without alot of homeowork those quizzes add up. He has a different personality but all in all is a good teacher. Id recommend him!!!!! pay attention to his lectures too!
Assignments are few but are worth major points. And he is a tough grader. He has a dry sense of humor and is intimidating. Plus his tests are difficult. If you show up to class and make an effort you can get a C. Not a professor for slackers.
Tought Class and Subject. He is a bit to liberal and expresses his views as such. He is really funny though at times
Cool teacher. Very deadpan humor. He goes on these odd digressions alot, but it's usually entertaining, also quite a few good one-liners.
I can see why some may say he's intimidating or snooty, but he's actually a good guy. He really is understanding but doesn't have patients for dumb people. I learned and he's not as tough as some make him out to be.
Professor Boeck lectures for the first 30 minutes of class and then show really good movies afterwards, he's a really funny guy. Considering the choices of professors in the FMS dept, I definitely recommend Boeck over Perry.
Boeck is not a good prof. tries to be funny but isn't, hard to pay attention to, plays good movies but skips around alot and always on the good parts. dont recommend taking him....sorry
Not my favorite class. He does have an unusual sense of humor that I found entertaining. Lectures the majority of the time & its hard to pay attention to his long lectures = boring. Not too many hw assignments, but there are a few papers you have to write. Short quizzes on the txtbook readings & test are difficult. OK but not highly recommended...
quizzes every week based on reading from the book. must read book! never really takes attendance, make sure to keep ur notebook and notes organized, start your term paper early (7 pages). I never went, did horrible on the weekly quizzes, but did the term paper and notebook and got a B!
Guy is an artist of sorts. Very funny dude! He writes his own material, and that is the majority of the reading, I never opened the book (but it wasn't very expensive in the first place) and he allows a degree of freedom in interpreting comedies and tying those comedies into other aspects of humanity, sociology, psychology. It's a great class!
I loved this guy. Very funny and he doesn't take any crap from anyone. Only take this class if you are serious about learning about film because he makes examples of slackers-in front of everyone. Do the reading and see the films and you will do just fine, he is very good at teaching this subject.
He expects you to teach yourself basically through reading the textbook
At the outset I almost physically took arms against him, yet after a while it dawned on me that he was an eminently capable man. Not easy to get along with at times, but now I find myself looking back at him as a friend. Godspeed Mr. Boeck.
HE EXPECTS YOU TO TEACH YOURSELF FROM THE BOOK. HE COMES OFF REALLY RUDELY!! GET TO KNOW HIM & TALK TO HIM & HE IS ACTUALLY REALLY KoO. FOR THE 8 - 10 PAGE PAPER, GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. HE HELPS YOU A LOT!!! QUIZZES EVERY MONDAY. MIDTERM/FINAL: STUDY STUDY GUIDE. OVERALL: OKAYY TEACHER!
Comes off rude at first, but eventually you realize it's just an act. He's actually a good teacher with a great, dry, sarcastic sense of humor. His "exasperated" rants are very funny. Yes he'll bemoan the bad grades loudly, but if you do poorly in this class, that's your own fault! I got A's and B's without studying at all. Recommended!
took him for several classes. seriously, one of my fav teachers. he still cares about the material & is very intelligent. he also seems to take his students seriously. he keeps a sense of humor (watch out for "pals of the saddle" joke), & kept the learning fun. attend class & stay on top of the reading. oh, the mustache is gone.
I loved the class I took and learned so much! You weren't spoonfed the material and you were really expected to think and be critical and analyze for yourself. This made me appreciate even more that this is a field I want to go into. Thank you, Mr. Boeck!
When I first met Prof. Boeck I thought he hated my guts...Do not take him personally. I came out of his class forever enriched in my college experience. He is a wealth of knowledge and is willing to hand it to you as a student. He will not sugar-coat this knowledge. He is rough around the edges, that is all. I am sure he is quite sweet at heart...a
I came in first day super nervous. I have to admit he can be a **** at times. He literally made this girl run of class crying. He also calls people out. Just read the book, bring a notebook and come on time and he can be the coolest teach. He a hardass but he also funny (sometimes). At the end day I would take another class of his.
Rick Boeck is a great teacher! He means everything that he says and is super funny if you're into sarcasm. Bring your book and actually read it and participate in discussions. He's very blunt and I've seen him make a girl cry, but he wants to be respected in his classroom. I would totally recommend him.
take it only if you are majoring in film. If you are taking just for GE req, i wouldn't recommend him, there are many easier/nicer prof than him. He is super hard, harsh, and uses dry sarcasm.
this guy is great. he is straight up and will call people out on stupid stuff like textin during class. He is funny in a dry sarcastic sort if way. He loosens up even more as semester goes on If you come to class you shld do well. I got an A w/o reading most of the chapters because he is so comprehensive in his lessons. gives a study guide b4 tests
He's a great teacher! He's also really funny if you like dry humor. He also holds you accountable for reading and knowing the material - but hey you're in college so you should be on top of your studies anyway.
I also had him for FMS 300 and he was just as fantastic! Reading your textbook is crucial for quizzes. He gets into his work and works just as hard as his students a lot of the time. The paper at the end of the semester is very clear and he gives you a rubric of what he wants in each paragraph. Read your textbook and take notes during the movies!
He had a good sense of humor, although kind of ****. I was one of two girls in my class and felt a little awkward some of the time. Fun class though.
He came off as cold in the beginning but as the semester goes on he seems more loosened up. He says it like it is. Very blunt. Calls you out if you are being rude or using your phone. (You shouldn't be texting if you want to pass anyway) You have to read the book, it might not seem like he is very clear at first but if you just read the book and st
I LOVE THIS PROFESSOR! He may seem like a tool at first but he is one of the best teachers that i've ever had. He's blunt & straight up! If your wasting his time he'll tell you to leave! To pass his class all you gotta do is make sure you ALWAYS have your note book out, Do the assignments & get atleast a b- on his tests & you'll do fine! :)
He was my teacher long ago and inspired me to enter my profession. He was challenging, fair and very funny. Newspaper advisors are often put in tough positions- between their colleagues(that will be there for years) and students who leave at the end of the year. It would be easier to always side with colleagues-Instead he sided with journalism.
BOECK IS RATHER STUCK UP BUT IN A FUNNY WAY THAT MOST THEATRE/FILM TEACHERS ARE. THE COURSE WORK IS RATHER SIMPLE AS THE CLASS IS MORE INTO PAYING ATTENTION TO DETAILS. HES A VERY GOOD TEACHER NONETHELESS..AND UNTILL FURTHER NOTICE IM STILL A FILM MAJOR :)
WORST TEACHER EVER. Tries to call students out and make them feel stupid- he's just plain rude. He tests you on stuff that he never teaches and it's not even in the textbook.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. He's over-dramatic, rude and picks on students. His tests are incredibly hard because he tests you on stuff he never taught, plus you can't find it anywhere in the text. He tries to trick students because he doesn't like to give out A's - if he has too many A's on the first exam he will make the next one almost impossible to pass.
This professor will come off extremely rude, rational, boring, blunt, and super anal about reading the text, but he as been my most beneifcial professor so far. The man clearly knows what he's talking about and holds high standards for a good reason. He's all about hard work, so I recommend only taking him if you want to work hard.
He is arrogant and proud of it. He also enjoys picking on students and singling out them out. Must read the book and attend class. Also have to always be "paying attention". Strict. Tests aren't as bad as people say, asks similar questions to past quizzes. Don't recommend.
Hilarious humor, this teacher is hard only if you dont read any of the chapters, if your getting a bad grade bring him some wild turkey but keep it on the under, i enjoyed this class more than other ones because the techer will clown you if you dont do the work
On a good note: This professor knew what he was talking about, would answer questions you had fairly well and he has a good sense of humor. On a not so good note: You have to read the book or you'll get a C or lower, he likes to give pop quizzes on the reading material, and he can be fairly rude to you if you happen to do make a mistake.
Professor is not very friendly, and does not say good morning when he approaches his students. Kind of rude.
He was cool. Fair sense of humor. I took him for 3 film classes, and I failed his film history class because I did not do his analysis essay that he has for all his film classes. Otherwise, cool teacher. All you do is watch films for all classes, and talk about them. Not much hw. I would recommend.
he's super pretentious and not very good at communicating either. only positive was we spent the majority of classtime watching films.
Really great professor. He's very helpful and hilarious. Lectures that would have been boring, he made hilarious and interesting. His analysis paper was probably the easiest paper I had to write. He also has funny side stories.
Hard, but great professor. I took him spring 2011 and enjoyed class. He may be a jerk but you learn from him and I would take him again, if I could afford the class.
I'm a film major and I have to say, I dreaded coming to class. He talks more about politics than he does film and it gets really annoying. Also, if you don't have the same political views he'll scoffs at your opinion. Do the reading, don't text, and you'll be fine. Overall it's an easy class.
He's a good teacher. People complain about him, but he is fair. Just listen to what he says and you'll be ok.
Best teacher in my college experience. Runs his class how a professor of college should. Doesn't allow college drop-out mentality and attitude in his class. Take good notes and record the test review lectures and you should easily get an A on the exams. Don't procrastinate on writing the paper and think ahead of the movie you'll be writing about.
Professor Boeck is a nice guy. I liked his class where we spent some the first 30 minutes or so taking notes/turning stuff in. Then, we had a 5 minute break and watched a film. Not that many assignments, but attendance is a must to know what's going on. Class is only 3 hours and 5 minutes, one day a week. I would recommend him to a film major.
If you pay attention and study and come to class you will pass. Some people don't like his humor but I found him funny. Dont expect an easy A. Midterm comes with excellent study guide and work hard on your paper. Overall interesting class, learned a lot about film.lots of pop quizzes. Extra credit offered.
strict on attendance and phones, class is pretty boring. you watch movies and skip most the good parts to it. he didn't take anyone in from the wait list at the beginning of the semester and only 12 people including myself went to the end. its his attitude the deters most students
Boeck is a great teacher. Lectures are interesting and he shows great films. Make sure you READ the text and come prepared to participate in lecture. If he knows you don't read, he will call you out. He's hilarious. Don't slack off, it's already a pretty easy class. Just show up, take notes, and READ the text. Take if you love film!
Weekly lecture-Required seating certain rows. Must have a ticket-(open notebook or U R out). Wkly reading req'd,book boring, large chptrs, discuss in class. Be ready quiz wkly.Study guides do not follow 100 % w/ lecture or book. No use of D2L, tests hard-no notes 4 exam. Fast pace, write fast & Invest hrs4 study.Prof avail office hrs only unorganized
Lack of respect for students. If you dont know something in his lectures, dont bother asking him to clarify. He'll just make u look stupid and tell you to look it up n dict.Study Guides are a sure way to fail.Complete inconsistency. Tests on things never discussed.Uses opinion as fact instead of facts.Worst textbook ever!Dont do it!You'll regret it!
I have taken Boeck enough times to know you don't have to read a single page in the books. It helps, but I still don't do it. Quizzes and being called out in class will hurt, but if you pay attention, they're possible. Study guides are extremely helpful especially with proper notes. Show up & you should be fine!
Easy class. Books are recommended though not necessary. Attend class and be able to answer all questions on the study guide and it's a cruise from there.
It's not hard as long as you attend class, read the books, do the essays, and STUDY BEFORE TESTS. As long as you do all that, you'll do fine. He gives you a study guide before the midterm and final. If you study from that, you'll pass with an A or B. He's a really awesome professor. I passed with it with a B.
He is such a great professor who keeps class extremely interesting. He is so nice and so funny! Show him and his class respect because he works really hard to put his classes together. I have so much respect for this professor.
Don't take him. He's strict about cell phones in the classroom and he wants students to sit in the first 7 rows. Its a large room and students should be able to sit anywhere they want to sit.
He made me hate college
I have taken almost all of his classes, and none are impossible to pass, especially with a decent grade. IF YOU DON'T TRY, YOU'LL FAIL. Don't take his class because you want to watch films, but you are actually interested in films.
Enjoying the philosophical and theoretical approaches to understanding different parts of the horror genre
Enjoyed the readings and the in-depth understanding of the different aspects of the horror genre. The philosophical and theoretical reasoning used to create interactive discussion in class. Not a lecture, the student actually participates!
I have taking Boeck more than any other professors and what seperates him from others is that he challenges you to follow his instructions. He never lies or sets you up for failure, he is strong on what he likes and dislikes and his papers strictly ask what is needed and nothing else should be placed into it.Don't take this class if you won't work
He is overall a good teacher. He might come off as rude or mean at the beginning but towards the middle of the semester he isn't so bad. His jokes are funny. This is not a class to just sit back and chill. You have to participate! Good luck! :)
Very interesting professor and lectures are very entertaining if you kept up on readings. It is not an easy A but he makes the class really fun. i found myself laughing half of his lecture.
Acts like he knows everything there is to film. The class is not about films, more like how you make the films, styles, and periods. skip through movies and expects you to know the answers to questions that were skipped. doesn't even lecture the right topics to cover what he is testing and the book does not cover as well. overall terrible prof.
Very sarcastic and full of snark. Was interesting enough during his lectures. Doesn't assign alot of work besides reading in the book and quizes almost every class session. There were 2 papers during the semester but they were pretty easy mainly because he basically structures the paper for you. But he knew his movies and I enjoyed the class.
His class is pretty challenging if you don't do the work. It's not a class to just watch movies, far more complex than that. He can come off rude and snarky and likes to choose people at random too. PARTICIPATE. Interesting but not a class I'd retake. This class made me nervous.
If you cant stand a sarcastic teacher DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I thought he was funny even though it was at the expense of making certain students look stupid but it was their fault if they were not prepared. He kind of acts like a know it all but he does know what he is talking about. Overall he is an average teacher but dont get on his bad side.
This Class is very educational. The reason he has you sit in the first several rows in the middle because it is easier to see, you can't text, SO you actually learn something. If you haven't seen these movies before hand you must just be taking the class because you have to, you can easily answer all the questions whether he skips parts or not.
Subject matter is interesting, professor is not. If you have the "uncool" dad at home, expect to have a second one in campus. 5 pt quizzes per week. Very awful, because you're expected to read the book which I actually did but still got 2-3 pts per quiz. I have 4 classes this semester and sure to have an A from all of them except for this class.
Did not care for Boeck's teaching style and sarcastic personality. I did learn, but at a cost to my happiness - if I could dropped I would have. I stuck it out and got a B - hated going to his class every single day.
I love Professor Boeck. I think he is a great professor. A lot of people think that he's standoffish; I think he's just annoyed of the typical student who comes into class thinking they don't have to put in much effort and participation in class to pass. Participate and attend class regularly and you'll find that he's a really great professor.
The most interesting professor that I have had at CRC, but you probably need the right mindset to take him. I though he was great, but my friend took him and hated him. Mostly, I think you need to be smart and capable of getting through a class without getting out of class help from your professor, because although he offers it, I doubt its helpful
Boeck is a professor you either love or hate. I thought he was a blast to take, so i took his classes more than once. I think he will be difficult if you don' t know how to pay attention or you just suck at college. Would definitely reccomend
Professor Boeck is a great professor,at first he seems unbearable but then he grows on you. All he really ask is for people to participate, take proper notes, read the material, and do well on the work that he does give.
This professor is as condescending and patronizing as they come. He rags on students for the most trival reasons and wonders why nobody participates in class. Interjects his political views into every topic covered in class. He gives pop quizzes you're lucky to get a 3 right out of 5 even if you do the reading. Avoid taking at Sac State if you can.
He good.
All of you that say Boeck is strict or hard or mean just arn't trying at all! I've literally thrown together a paper and studied good for my midterm and I'm riding a high B with hardly any effort. Boeck cares, he was always helpfull and personable in his office hours.
Very good. His class is not difficult. Read the assigned chapters and pay attention to the movies as the exams are on them. 10 page paper assigned on a movie also.
If you're taking him at Sac State fine, but he gives off the vibe that he does not want to teach at a community college. He tends to embarrass students are caught not paying attention. If you're a film nerd, can handle his sarcasm, and have enough self esteem to be picked on, you'll do fine. Otherwise look elsewhere.
The class is pretty straightforward, but the main issue involves the professor. He constantly patronizes his students whenever they make a mistake, and he also does a relatively poor job at lecturing too. He has a type of "I don't want to be here" vibe with him as well. If you want a professor who actually enjoys his students, look somewhere else.
Professor Boeck comes off mean and strict but if you put an effort in the class then that's all he cares about. Be sure to the readings because they will be helpful in a pop quiz. The exams and the paper are pretty straight forward. Most of the class time you are basically watching a movie. Overall do the work and you will be rewarded.
I came into this class liking film and left loving the art form. Prof Boeck is great at pointing out all of the nuances of the films he presents and he makes the class enjoyable with his dry humor. Make sure to read the textbook chapters because there are quizzes at the beginning of class usually, especially in the beginning of the semester.
