Great teacher, great lecturer. Take him
lectures are long, tests are all essay, attendance required
Had him all year, he's a really good teacher. Makes getting through history a whole lot easier. Very Nice Guy!
Easy tests, if you have any ounce of college level thinking, then you'll have no trouble pulling a solid B with no effort whatsoever.

Boring material made extremely interesting. Wish I had known about him when taking world civ. Very smart. Give him a raise!
An excellent teacher. I took him for both 101 and 102. Good lecturer and makes the materials interesting. Exams are essay questions but very doable.
He made a subject I loathe very interesting. I realize now why some people might "want" to study history. Great lecturer!
Bowler was a great professor that was very good at keeping his students interest.
A great teacher!!!! All his tests are in essay form, so take good notes. He'll help you out as much as he can, but you have to meet him 1/2 way, so make an appt. with him, and it'll make your life so much easier!
TAKE this guy! he will make history interesting. take his "Hitler and the 3rd Reich" class. very good class, we watched vidoes everyday, alot of lecture too....but its history so thats expected. he is always willing to help students GREAT GUY!
Great lecturer, knows everything possible on the subject and more. Decent amount of work but overall class is definitely worth it.
Alright teacher. LONG exams, 5 short answer, 3 short essay and 1 long essay. Lectures aren't too bad and are right out of the book. Strict attendence policy. Extra credit paper that can add 5% to your final grade, Do It!
Bowler rocked. He made world civ 101 and 102 interesting. Thank god for Richard Bowler.
Great teacher! I hate history so the class dragged a little now and then but he kept it as interesting as it could have been. He cracks me up. Don't get caught cheating but you shouldnt have to cuz the tests are doable. Take this teacher for sure!
This guy is really good, knows his stuff and is always willing to talk to you after class and explain stuff. he is limited by the sylabus and wants to go into more detail, a great prof.
i really liked how he made everything clear as to what the tests are like. the class is all lecture, but that is good cause you dont have to read the text book! nice guy and knows what he is talking about
He is great as a teacher... History is my least favorite subject but he made it bearable and even pretty interesting. I strongly recommend Dr. Bowler for class.
avoid avoid avoid he does know what he talks about but i tihnk he was beaten up as a highschooler becasue he grades very hard and is a bit arrogant about history almost kind of like he has something to prove
Bowler is a great teahcer. itstead of whipping dates at you he simply tells the story, so its easier to remember events and their significance becuase everythings in context with the general time period. tests are huge essays, reading portion is separate... good teacher.
GREAT teacher..he's kind of dorky but very clear on what he's trying to teach. Make sure you read the comparitive reading book..the reading quizzes will kick your ass if ya don't. Other than that, he's great!!!
i really hate history so i did not like this class at all. his tests are all essay which makes it kind of subjective. i would rather have multiple choice like some of the other teachers. he's a kinda weird guy. but you can tell he's trying. gives a extra credit essay that can add 5% to your grade.
Prof Bowler is a fantastic teacher who knows his stuff and is very clear in his explanations. He is also always very willing to help after hours. I totally recommend his classes! Habe das!!

He is the man flat out. He makes history very understandible and I am taking him again second semester.
Dr. Bowler is an awesome guy, and he is one of the smartest people i've met. he grades hard, but if you go to class and pay attention you'll do fine. He helps out a lot out of class if you need help. An added bonus is that his name has bowl in it.
Just take good notes and you will be fine! The Reilly readings are kind of pointless but the tests are easy as long as you study his study quide. Final is even easier. Hes so smart and a great teacher.
he gets alot done in each class and makes everything clear and in enough detail, a very easy class
Good teacher-all he does in class is talk and show slides of pictures, but he is still very intelligent. Do the readings because you will be tested on them. Even if you just skim them, you'll be ifne because if oyu know what the readings about, you can use your knowledge from class
pretty easy class, 3 tests...all essay questions but he doesnt grade that hard, juss write a lot..a bit of history dork, but good professor.
Great Teacher! Take good notes and the class will never be boring. His tests are all essay and he is not a hard grader. Knows a great deal about the subject. Don't try cheating in his class. He is a Hawk. But you won;t need to if you just use the study guide and read the small textbook. Take him!
hes kind of a dork... he will trip on desks, chairs, steps... whatever you put in front of him. however he is a nice and very intellegent guy and the tests are not that hard with a little studying... take him
The class was almost 3 hours long...so keeping that in mind, his lectures were somewhat boring but he was very good in answering questions and helping out students. In addition to lectures, he also had power point slides and videos to show. Tests are all LONG essay, but thats typical for history.
This class was SO interesting! It was really long, but really informative. You have to take a lot of notes but then you get to watch movies. Prof. Bowler is really smart and knows all of his sh**.
I hate this class and i fall asleep all the time...
Good teacher and knows his stuff about history.
Dr. Bowler talks very loudly and can be somewhat intimidating at first, but he is a great teacher and as long as you attend class and take notes you will do well on his tests, which are all short answer/essay.
Bowler is an amazing teacher. You must go to class and take thorough notes in order to be prepared for the exams. His exams are in 2 parts that are all essays, long and short, but he is a very fair grader. You get to watch videos and he usually has powerpoints of pictures/maps for further understanding. His notes are outlined for you. TAKE HIM!
AWESOME!!!! Just make sure you take really good notes! :-)
Dr. Bowler is a really great teacher. I think that his essay tests were a challenge, but he is a very fair teacher. Opportunities for extra credit were given and a few in class assignments. He really knows his stuff and I would take him again.
one of the worst teachers ive had. the tests took 2 class periods and were all essay and he wants a lot of details. i ended up with a 69% in the class and he wouldn't round me up to a C and now i have to retake the class. very hard and i don't recommend him at all!
he really knows his stuff! there are only 3 tests total and one of them is the final itself. he gives an extra credit paper which is worth 5% of your overall grade-seems like nothing. but that paper gave me a B. take him-he isn't painful and this is coming from someone like myself who hates history.

Nice guy, you have to actually go to class and take notes, but hey we're college kids, we should have to do that anyways. Only a few tests during the semester, they are long and tedious, but if you do the readings, and take notes you should be fine. He is a fair grader and will explain why he gave you what he did.
I loved this guy. He made everything so clear. He wrote a whole outline on the board everyday so we could follow what he was going to talk about. We watched a lot of videos. His clothes are all way to big for him but he is cute ; )
VERY BORING CLASS. Then again I hate history. He only grades on midterm and final, and they are looong essays. no multiple choice, or matching.
he isnt very helpful and his exams are HARD!! all essays. studied my butt off and still barely got a C, with 3 pages of essays he said I "didnt give enough detail". defintely would not recommend him, especially for a 101 or 102 class!
Good teacher in terms of making the material understandable. Kind of a boring class but usual lets us out 10-15 minutes early. Makes an outline everyday. A lot of reading outside of the class. He is a really hard grader. All his tests are essays which kind of stinks.
Writes outline on the board before class so you know what to take notes on when he lectures. Lectures can get boring, watched 3 "movies" during the semester and had short, easy writing assignment after each. Tests are all essay which sucks. Reading quizzes on like 10 different things sucks too but if you actually read it should be easy.
Bowler is great. I wish all my teachers were like him.
Talks the entire class period, only writes a small outline on the board. He's alright if you can write down everything he says in 50 mins but if not your basically screwed.
He writes an outline on the board and goes through it. All you have to do is show up, take notes and pay attention. It college, what do you expect? The textbook wasnt referenced much but we had quizes on Reileys. Highly recommend
He is relatively interesting, but can get really boring as he repeats himself a lot. He requires a lot of reading, and is a pretty tough grader. If you don't like writing or aren't good at him, by all means don't take him. That is all you get graded off of.
He's a pretty nice guy. Goes through everything in the guidelines that he puts on the board. There are 2 papers on two separate books so if your not a good writer he may not be the best guy for you. But overall pretty clear and easy to follow.
Took over the winter term, easy class. 3 books, 1 you don't need to read, papers on the other two (5 pages?) Half the class was note taking (outline is on the board), short break, then videos for the rest of the class. 2 exams, 2 essays for each not difficult (I hate essays). Barely read the books, wrote the papers in a couple of hours and got B's.
Every class he puts an outline on the board which helps since all other notes is writing what he says. There were two tests, two quizzes, and a paper based off a book as our grade. It requires studying but overall I enjoyed him as a teacher and he made the class interesting. He incorporates a lot of pictures and videos.
He is a brilliant professor, he always comes to class prepared, jots notes on the board, and explains everything in depth. The way he lectures will keep one interested. The class is rather easy, if you do not procrastinate, and do all of the readings, and assignments.
I love history and Dr. Bowler is my ideal history professor. He's very factual and likes details, but always keeps in mind the big picture. He knows more than you can imagine and it's very easy to keep your attention in class. If you participate and go the writing center before turning in your papers, you will get an A.
Dr. Bowler is one of the most knowledgeable professors that I have come across. He puts an outline on the board before each lecture which makes it very easy to follow. Two essays and two exams. Exams are tough but he gives you all of the information you need to know. Definitely take him if you have the chance.
If you ask questions during his lectures he gets really excited. Essays are graded more on content then style so if you aren't the best writer he is a good teacher.
Very knowledgeable professor. He loves when you ask questions or participate in any way because most of the time it's just him talking. He expects a lot for essays and exams but that's only because he prepares you well for them if you take good notes and study. Laid back class and he doesn't take attendance. Glad I had him as a professor
Really enjoyed this class. An old school professor with straight lectures. First half of the class is lecture, take a break, second half watch a video. Two papers on two books that were fairly easy. Didnt like the all essay midterm and final but other than that a really approachable and friendly guy. The smartest guy at the school. Would recommend.
He makes lectures not boring, however the tests are VERY hard considering it's all essays. The 2 quizzes are also hard and there isn't a lot of room to bring your grade up. He is so smart and knowledegable and gets very excited when someone asks a question. I would take again if I knew how much I should pay attention and how much is expected exams
Bowler is great. He loves history and you will clearly see that when he lectures. I would definitely take him again. You will have two reading quizzes and a mid-term and a final. His class is great and he does not give any homework other than readings, but you can still pass without reading everything. Definitely take him, you will not regret it!
i had him for history 103, great teacher, enthusiastic about his subject and loves it when people ask questions or answers his. im not a big history guy but he really made the topic interesting!! i would take him again if i could! four essays and attendence are your only grades, but hes not a hard grader, class was fun and he made it easy enough.
Overall an interesting class. The class is lecture everyday with a few papers and two tests. Dr. Bowler expects a lot on the tests but I always enjoyed his lectures.
One of the smartest professors you will ever come across. A tough grader, but he gives good feedback so you can improve. If you are a history major you should absolutely take him because you will learn so much, but I would recommend him even if you aren't a history major. People complain because you have to work for your grade but it's a great clas
He is a nice guy and seems to be beyond knowledgable about the topic. But he is a very tough grader. Especially on essays on the books I am a senior and I got my first C on an essay in this class. His classes are pretty interesting usually lectures and a couple videos here and there.
Lectures are extremely boring and painful to sit through sometimes. His grading is there are two quizzes worth 5% each, a paper worth 20% and a midterm and final worth 35% each. All exams are purely essays, no multiple choice. If you show up and take decent notes you'll be fine.
Bowler is literally the smartest history professor I've ever had. He outlines his lectures at the beginning of class and follows them basically word by word. His lectures are pretty boring and he talks the whole class, but he is very intelligent and you can tell he is very passionate about what he teaches. He also never took attendance for my class
He is very smart and you can tell he really likes what he is teaching. He is very enthusiastic about the topics. His class is all lectures but he makes them very interesting.
He is a nice guy, very passionate and willing to meet with his students, however he is hard. I'm an honors college student and the best I would get in his class on all graded materials was a 79.5, which he wouldn't round up, only four grades. The class is very interesting, the first 1 1/2- 2 hours is lecture and then short break, then a video.
By far the smartest history professor I have had. Ive always hated history courses but he made me really interested in what we were learning. Theres a lot of reading and the quizzes and exams are ALL writing, no multiple choice. PPTs don't have any words and aren't posted online so you have to actively listen to get any use out of the lectures.
Very few grades. Lots of reading. Long and boring lectures. Attendance isnt mandatory and he does not have homework but quizzes and test at the end of the semester and mid term. Some lectures are interesting but not all the time. Just boring majority of the time
The best class I've taken at SU so far.
His lectures can be legnthy, but for someone who isn't a fan of history, he knows how to keep them interesting. He is a tough grader on papers, and doesn't always provide much feedback. He splits the long class in half with lecture and a movie. The movies are very hit or miss with interesting topics but will help you in the long run.
Mr. Bowler is one of the best professors I've had so far at Salisbury. He really cares about his student's success in and out of the class and he is very enthusiastic about what he teaches. He is a tough grader but if you show up to class and take good notes you will pass the class.
Dr. Bowler is one of my favorite professors I've had at Salisbury University. Very engaging professor. Would absolutely take him again.
Out of all the professors Ive had here, Professor Bowler is the only one Ive had that was genuinely passionate on the subject and extremely knowledgeable, it was actually crazy impressive how thorough his lectures were. Thankful I had him, great guy through and through.
Very tough grader and does not give you notes visual so if you are not an auditory learner do not take. He goes really fast through the lectures. You have a midterm and a final which are both 2 parts that must be handwritten essays for both parts.
the class consisted of 90 mins of him just straight talking and us writing down what he was saying and the other 90 mins was a video we then had to answer a question. there are three grades in the class and then the final. two essays which he is a very hard grader. and then a test which was two open ending questions.
His lectures are him talking while there are pictures on the board and it can be hard to follow. While he is very knowledgeable about the topics, he expects you to be too although he does not always give clear details. Grade is based on a few papers and that's it, and he is a tough grader so it is hard to earn a good grade.
This was a normal History class, the only assignments we had were papers but we only got a couple. His lectures were informative and you could tell he was passionate. If you participate even just a little it'll take you a long way with him. If you want a class that you can do hw in this is it. Raise your hand every now and then and you got an A
If you are not an auditory learner please do not take this class. Professor only talks, and provides no written help. He is a fast talker so you must be an excellent note taker or you will fail. Preparing for the final is super hard as you must rely solely on your notes, so they better be good. Class is essay based. But professor is very enthusiast
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ARE SIMPLY TRYING TO RECEIVE A C FOR YOUR GEN ED HISTORY REQUIREMENT! He takes absolutely 0 interest in his students outside of the classroom. Your entire class grade is based on 6 assignments/exams which he grades ridiculously harsh for a class that does not directly associate with the majors of the majority of his students.
Prof. Bowler is compassionate about his subjects and his class is meant to make you pay attention. There are very few assignments, making you work harder on the things that are graded, but he covers the exam material in his lectures. All the grades are based on essays or papers. While knowledgeable, he's not the easiest to talk to or ask questions.
This professor's assignments are ridiculously hard for a gen ed history class. He requires you to read long material and asks very specific questions on details of these readings for his quizzes. The amount of work you have to put in this class just to get a C or B is over the top. Do not take it unless you love history or are a history major.
Dr. Bowler has a great way to lecture and even though a lot of people might not like to just listen and take notes on the lecture, its a History class. There's not really much else of a way for it to be taught. The only aspect that I did not like was that even though attendence was mandatory the grades were vey dependent on readings. Just do them.
Overall he's a great teacher, although he assigns a lot of writing. He's an easy grader as long as u have some idea of what you are talking about.
Professor Bowler's HIST224 is a tough but rewarding class. The lectures can be lengthy, but he keeps them engaging. Unstuckstudy and the textbook are helpful study tools. Be prepared for challenging essays, but it's worth it for an informative course.
Basically all of your grades are writing however, 2/4 writing assignments are book essays with very straightforward prompts. What I will say is he knows his stuff. Any questions asked in class are answered in GREAT detail and it made his class fun. Class is half lecture then second half watching a documentary reiterating the lecture. Must attend!
If you are taking this for a gen ed history, go the other way. If you are taking this because you love history and are interested in WWII, absolutely take this course! Bowler is a great guy, but the class is very lecture-heavy. He doesn't post slides. You have a midterm and final, 2 essays, participation, and 2 discussion boards. Good luck!
Lectures are enjoyable and informative. Quizzes require a lot of reading for just to be worth 5% each, BUT f you get the quiz material summarized, its manageable. Midterm and final are similar and manageable if you attend lectures and take good notes. Tests and quizzes are handwritten. One paper on a short but boring book worth 25%.
