Dr Branyon is a teacher that honestly has no other life besides english. He really cares for his students and wants them to learn. He wrote his own text book and is completly obsessed with it. He assigns loads of grammar worksheets and you have 3 library excersise worksheets to do they seriously take like 3 days at the library. He is willing to hel

Very Hard to follow.
This man is a grammer freak! He is very hard and assigns lots of work. The instructions he gives on papers is sometimes unclear. He will fail your papers over little things. Be prepared to work. I suggest anyone but him.

Teaches things that have nothing to do with the class.
Boring class, I want to kill myself everything I go in there. Nice guy, just lonely, likes to hear himself talk and needs to get laid. Is willing to help, if you are willing to have no life and devote all of your time to him and his class. Be prepared to spend 4-5 hours a week for this class and there is a quiz every class. I Don't recommend him.

His class was way to much work!If you can't get out of taking him, you better memorize his office hours. He is very helpful if you are willing to go to him constantly. I ended up failing this class. get out if you can! He's a nice, but he thinks that his class is the most impt one. Also, be prepared for the overload of e-mails he will send you.
Get OUT while you can. This class is so stressful. Dr. Branyon is such a nerd. He gives out way too much work. He acts like his class is the only class you are taking. I would advise you to get another professor ASAP if possible. He helps you out or whateva but he is tough when it comes to grading papers. All i got to say is know your grammar.
I would not recommend taking this class. Your advisor might tell you it is an easy "A"... Do not listen to them. I studied and did more work in this class then any of my other classes and still did not do well. If you do have him, good luck!
DONT TAKE THIS TEACHER! If your advisor tells you its an "easy A" its not! He's the worst about asking latin roots and crap you dont know, and he thinks his class is the only class you are taking. He gives quizzes on every book & grade them so unfairly.this man i think is one of the worst teachers ive ever had and this was the worst class at ECU
hes really smart and he knows that hes talking about but he would always talk to me in french and expect me to know what he was saying. if you miss a day of his class you get really far behind. i wouldnt recommend this class. its supposed to be a writing class but hes mostly concerned with quizes, the library, and his stupid SSG book that he wrote
Ok, so if you are in this class your best bet is to take notes on his class lectures - THEY ARE THE QUIZZES. A lot of people hated this class, and it is a bit of work, but I didn't read a single novel and still made an A no problem. Just pay attention and bookmark sparknotes. Best of luck!!
Dr. Branyon's class will be the hardest class you will take. If you are not a 100% devoted student, get out now. You will spend endless hours in the library if you take his class. I got an A, but it was only because I spent every waking hour doing English, and believe me if I could do it over again, I wouldn't. Drop this class.

The absolute worst teacher ever. It's a freshman class and he treats it as if it's a class for those majoring in english. Makes it so much harder than it needs to be. He's an english freak-it's all he cares about. Tries to teach so much unneccessary information and he does it in such a boring way. I also think he likes sausage-----A LOT

He's a wonderful man and a wonderful teacher. However, his quizzes are really midterms in disguise. He only assigns two papers during the year, but his readings are demanding. A good teacher, but only take him if you have the time to dedicate to his class.
This man is the worst professor i have ever had! I am not just saying this because he is ridiculously hard and gives out rageous amounts of work, I am saying it because it is true. I am a good student. I study, I read, and I go to class everyday. But for some reason, this man thinks that his class is a class for PH.Ds who's whole lives revolve around british literature. He has expectations that are way too high for an undergrad class. And he gets VERY anal about you writing papers the way HE wants you to...not the way you have been taught your whole life, but the way HE SAYS. Take it from me, if he is one your schedule, you need to DROP, DROP, DROP!!!!
I HATE this class. I think British Lit. can be taught with some fun to it, but Branyon knows how to ruin it! He is extremely hard and anal about his own personal style. This class is boring, and way to much work. Branyon is horrible. Its his way or the high way drop now while you can!

DROP THIS CLASS. you'd think a 1000 level course wouldn't be too difficult. Dr. Branyon seems to think his class is our only class and assigns CRAPloads of work! we read a book a week and have a quiz just about every classday-sometimes two! if you can help it, get rid of him! i'm a good student, and all i want to do is punch him in the face.
Good professor, just expects you to read and work hard. He is not nearly as difficult as many people make him out to be. A couple of folks in the class made "A's," and while this is an English major's course, it certainly was not the most difficult class. If you are willing to learn, to read, and to pay attention in class, you can succeed.

he was hard as crap, assigned loads of work and reading, but in the end, as long as you act like you tried, he'll give you an A. I didn't do a few of the assignments and I managed to pull an A out of it...you just have to be able to put up with him!
He writes his own text in addition to a required anthology. He expects a very specific style of writing for essays (If you've taken Sidhu, you might be okay). He often teaches about Latin/Greek or other obscure phrases. He calls people randomly to answer questions, so completing the reading is important.
He is satan on a power trip. Seriously. A) he makes you buy a book from HIM (which i don't think is exactly acceptable) which means definintely not optional since he keeps a list of who has/has not got it. He assigns far too much work--seems to forget his students have Other teachers and assignments. His paper grading is ridiculous. Avoid!!!
Do not take any class under this man. He is heartless, His life revolves around his work, which he will tell you himself, and expects his students' lives to do the same. If you get on his bad side, he will make your academic career a living hell. Do NOT take from this man!
HE IS A NAZI!!! He grades papers unreasonably, and then will call you out in the middle of class about your faults. I have never hated a class as much as I hate his. And he picks favorites, so you better be one. Oh and brush up on your latin and greek as a second language you'll need to know it.
Dr. Branyon genuinely cares about his students and wants you to do well, he takes the time to learn names by the first day, and is available for help any time. He does give a lot of work but does not grade too hard, and if you try at all there is no reason you should not make an A. I really enjoyed the class and ended up with a 98 average.
He is the worst teacher ever!!! He starts sending emails in June and fills your inbox up. Assigns ridiculous amounts of work and on top of assigned quizzes he likes to have pop quizzes too. He hates tardiness and absences-no matter the excuse!! NEVER take this class!!! EVER!!!
Dr. Branyon is the nicest man. He is very helpful and gives plenty of opportunities to make a good grade. He does assign a lot of work, but if you read the books or even the booknotes, you will do fine. He does send lots of emails but it is only because he cares and it is very helpful because it reminds you of the assignments!!

Lets just say Dr.Rick Branyon is one of the hardest teachers you will ever have at ECU. He teaches his class like it is a graduate English course. If you can dont take it unless you also LOVE english. He loves what he does, but if you dont know grammer your pretty much screwed. Have fun
Dr. Branyon is an amazing teacher. He truly cares about his students, and he is extremely helpful. He assigns gammar activities regularly, so if you are not into grammar, I advise you to stay away. But if you like a sweet old man that listens to Pink Floyd, take him!
He loves his job and will do whatever needed to help you succeed, however he give alot of time consuming worK. Make sure you look at anything he hands out because it will on a quiz or test. Great class and you will learn alot
His life seems to revolve around his work. He honestly loves english and gives plenty of work. Nice guy and enjoys teaching english. Usually 3-4 major papers and 2 drafts before turning in the final for each. Attendance for his class is mandatory if you dont attend, your grade will suffer.
branyon was aweomse! i hated english & managed to pull an A yes its alot of work but its worth it just be sure to stay on top of things & youll be fine if you have common sense u can handle this class if i could do it over id take him and id prob actually read the material instead of being a slacker he really does care about each individual student
Get out why you still can! English is his life! He assigns lots of grammar exercises and three major papers which require two drafts for each! He cancels scheduled appointments and offers little help! I would never take him again.
It's true u have loads of work in this class but hes a nice guy. U will have long papers & assignments due at the same time & he will e-mail 2-3 a day. He writes his text so its cheaper but it does not provide u w/ everythng u need to kno like he says it does.He is VERY hard but VERY nice. Attendance is required, he knows u by name after 1st class.
Dr. Branyon is really helpful!! If you can not pass his course then maybe you have a problem.

very hard and confusing, expect a good 3-5 a week spent on home work, and any where from 8-12 on papers.

Although he is a enthusiastic professor he is doesnt give clear directions as far as assignments. He may learn everyones name but he at times tries to humiliate students. He constantly refers to his students as ignorant fools and rambles about greek and latin roots. DONT TAKE HIM...SAVE A GRADE REPLACEMENT!!!!

this man dedicates his life to making yours a living hell. work load is outraegous. i understand its a WI course but its worse than an honors course. tons of reading and impossible worksheets. quizzes are out of this world. doesnt hesistate to call you out and make you feel dumb. also makes you buy his personal text for $50 that goes in HIS pocket.

1st of all the work load is anything but impossible. Dr. Branyon is very clear in his expectations & while they are high, they're maintainable. Don't take him. He took up all of my first semester in College. I was doing WAY more work than any other english 1100 student i know. I made A's in AP English and struggled to maintain a C.

Dr. Branyon is an unreasonable professor. Do NOT take any of his courses or you are likely to fail his course.I did all of the assignments and papers and did not pass his class. He will take off points for as many things as he can. DO NOT take his class he is the WORST teacher ever.
Hard to get along with
HORRIBLE! killed my GPA. Had perfect attendance, did all my work and still got a D. He picks on students.. basically called me a dumba** is front of the whole class but also said the same to other students. Writes his own text which is his Bible. absolutly the worst class I have ever had. If u want to feel like an idiot... take him :)

Dr. Branyon is amazing. He is one of the elite few who actually care about his students. He LOVES grammar though, so remember that, but if you get on his good side, and talk about old music, he'll love you forever. Take his class!!!
Dr. Branyon is a really good professor but if you plan on having a life, don't take his class. He assigns homework every night and he has a mandatory attendance policy but he genuinely cares about his students and actually tries to help them pass. He'll even tell you the first week of class that if you don't plan on working, to just drop out.
ten novels for 1 semester; ridiculous amount of homework; unreasonable; thinks he's your only class and the final exam is crazy. Daily discussions on topics from the books you have to read (in less than a week for each) and then have quizzes on the books. You are required to by his "textbook" that costs $49.50 and he keeps the money.DON'T TAKE HIM
This class seemed to be more of a grammar class than an actual English class. We spent more time going over parts of speech than learning different techniques and styles of writing.The amount of work that I did for his class was most defiantly double all of my other classes combined. All in all this class was ridiculous. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!

Dr. Branyon is the worst instructor I have ever had. Period. More than half the class has dropped halfway through the semester and believe me when I say I would if I could. He is very old fashioned and only pays attention to girls and those who kiss his ass. He will absolutely tear apart even the best papers and it is very discouraging. Easy F.

Dr. Branyon is the smartest professor i have ever had. There is a lot of work and reading but he always tries to help you no matter what. He knows everything there is to know about English and Grammar. I really liked his class. He has office hours and he meets with students every Tuesday and Thursday in the library. Take this class.
Often made students feel like they were incompetent, which is not at all what the learning atmosphere is about. His homemade textbook was more of a tribute to his own ego than it was a helpful tool in learning. Understandably, he was also facing a challenge but seemed to view all of his students as halfwits and blockheads.

Rick Branyon is the most amazing college professor I have ever had. When I was in his class I may have been annoyed by how serious he wanted everyone to take it, but I am so glad I took it now. I know so much more about the subject and he really cares about you and your grade. GO FOR IT! If you WANT to learn, Branyon is the professor for you! :)

I took Dr. Branyon's second semester Freshman English class at UNCP...perfect attendence and completion of all assignments on time are of no value to this man. Out of his three classes at UNCP, only a handful passed. For some reason, Dr. Branyon only taught at UNCP for one semester...

Definitely a LOT of work involved in this course. If you're not willing to put in the slightest bit of effort, don't bother signing up. He's a tree-killer with his abundance of handouts. Very meticulous, nice guy, helpful, but not fun to have as a professor. He calls on every single person every single class, so be ready to speak in class.
Really doesn't take into consideration your workload in other classes, assigns way too much meaningless work. Only helpful to those who see him in his office hours and doesn't have much sympathy for those who have a life outside of class. He's very insulting and questions everyone's education just because you can't answer some obscure question about the french revolution or define some latin term. This class requires a good deal of time dedicated to it. The work load overly exceeds what a gen ed class should entail. Unless you genuinely love English, find someone else. Half the class will spent on tangents discussing worthless information and the latin roots of words. I hated his class.
While his class demands a great deal of effort and dedication, you will emerge from his course as a more effective communicator. His required work is much more than most professors, but his affable attitude provides methods for success. If you want to learn, definitely enroll in his class; however, if you are unwilling to work, run away from him!
Although you learn a lot from this course DONT TAKE it if you aren't ready for the most work in the world. I'll admit I learned some helpful things but it doesn't make up for the massive work load you have to do! ALOT OF WORK!
Liked to listen to himself speak. Sent way too many condisending emails about how much work he does for us. Teaching a 5-week condensed class, he had no idea how to pace, what was important, kept reminding us that if we went to a "regualr" university, it would be worse (I can't imagine how). I cannot wait for this class to end.
Dr. Branyon is a horrible teacher. He constantly will make you feel dumb. I would put a lot of time into his assignments and get a 70/80. I used to be good at English and then I got to his class. He gave way too much work to keep up with and graded very harshly. He is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. 0/10 NEVER TAKE HIS CLASS
Workload wasn't that bad but writing essays for this man. Went on to take AP Lang the next year and had to essentially reteach myself how to write because his style was SO archaic 🥸 BEWARE!!!! do NOT take his class unless you want your writing to be bland and MEANINGLESS!!!
