I took pcb2099 & the lab online with professor Brinn and I absolutely hated it!!!! Its not an extremely difficult class but the tests are very hard, nothing like the quizzes he gives. The professor is also not helpful whatsoever and would take days to reply to me if I had a question about something. I would not recommend this class, take it on camp
I took this class plus the lab and it was a great experience. The class is not the easiest but the professor is willing to healp and listen to any concerns at all times. The tests are not extremely hard but you need to study. I would recommend him!
i took him online for physiology and the lab, hes super boring, tests are difficult even with studying and the book in front of you. he takes days to respond to questions, and he always seems to have an attitude. Frustrating class, not worth it. Try not to take this course online, i would not recommend it.
dont take this class online!!!! you will probably get a higher grade if you take it with another teacher on campus!!!!! Brinn is terrible and was not prepared to handle an online class!!!!
I actually thought his online class was pretty easy. The tests weren't that hard and neither were the quizzes. Some answers were a little harder than others to find but other than that, The class was easy. And he responds to your questions pretty quick too.
Worth the trip to BBC
This class covered a lot of information but the 2 exams only covered the "important stuff" I would definitely take him again. Try to make the field trip it was a blast.
GREAT PROFESSOR! He will keep you awake throughout class that's because he is loud. His tests are super easy. Easy A for an upper level course.
His online class isn't as hard as everyone says. He responds fairly quickly to emails, and was understanding when I submitted something late. The only downside is that the entire class is tests and quizzes! You WILL need the book, and one important thing: DO NOT do last minute reading! It is hard to look up everything in the book during the test!!
GREAT professor!!!! Go to class & take notes & you'll do great on the exams. Dr. Brinn made the class very enjoyable.
Great Profesor. Very clear and specific on what he wants. If you want an easy A, attend class, record lectures, and review powerpoints while listening to lectures... TADA!!
Dr. Brinn is a great professor.. animal physiology was not an easy class but he makes it enjoyable to learn.. and u can make a A in his class.if you want to learn about animal physiology.
do not take this class.. waste of my time. class was useless.. everything was online- gave random quizzes about articles that no one undertsood and got graded.. horrible.
Dr. Brinn is the best! He makes you more confortable in class, and allows you to understand the material before moves to the next topic. I took him for two class and i will take him for 20 more if possible. Take him but study hard...his exams are written...no guessing game! So you actually know what you talking about when you asked about it.
great professor, very knowledgeable and willing to increase easy assignments in order to help other students pull up their average. very reccomended.
He is the BEST teacher. Very funny and helpful always willing to help students raise their grade. 2 tests and an optional final exam. Extremely knowledgeable makes you love marine bio!
Excellent professor. Passionate, intellectual, yet not nerdy. Great class whether this class is related to your major or not. Will be required to learn phylum and class of various organisms and learn the abiotic factors of the marine world.
Brinn teaches directly from power points which are all really long and have a lot of information. Although his tests are short (about 20 questions or less) his "reviews" don't help and you never really know what to study. attendance not mandatory but if you want to pass you should go to EVERY class! its not pie but if you try you can do it
Took him for Endocrinology. Great professor and person. He teaces well and gives you everything needed to get an A. He is very fair in grading. Bottom line: You put forth effort and come to class, you can easily get an A
Prof. Brinn is the BEST!!!! The material is not easy, of course it's endocrinology!!! But he makes it as easy and enjoyable as possible...attendance is not mandatory but if you want to do well, as in every class, it will help if you do go to class. I would take any class with him, he is extremely fair, you dont get an A if you really dont study
Great class to take whether you are a science major or not. Dr. Brinn is a great professor you will never get bored in his class. Although he does not take attendance you should not miss class. Exams are essay format so you need to know your stuff. Overall you will truly learn about animal physiology. I highly recommend this class.
Dr. Brinn is a great professor. Dont have to attend class, but I suggest you do and record his lectures. His exams are essays, but if he asks if you want mc, DO NOT say yes b/c theyre not the typical ones. Have a couple of article discussions, which are easy; and theres a presentation that you should not leave to the last minute. No book needed.
Great teacher knowledgeable and always willing to clarify. As long as you do your job of coming to class you will do very well. He has an interesting and i think better approach to teaching bc he continually interacts with the class so we actually know what the heck hes talking about. To endocrinology and animal physiology and both were excellent
I enjoyed skipping this class every single week and only going to class on test days, while still ending up with an A :)
Richard is a really good teacher. I had him for Intro to Marine Bio, and Prior to taking his class I didnt really have an interest in the subject, but now, I literally find myself understanding so much more around me! I totally recommend him as a teacher! (Oh! and please dont wait til the last minute to read those discussions! He will call you out)
Very clear teacher, he involves his students in the lecture. I never had a problem understanding anything that he taught.
Brinn's lectures were animated and clearly given. He made students interested in the subject.
Great professor! He is funny and makes learning easy, understands and know a lot on the subject!
Richard Brinn is a great professor. His lectures are very engaging. The knowledge that you will receive in his PCB4805 Endocrinology class is priceless, especially if you are a future medical student. He organizes group discussions of the fascinating scientific articles which helps you to build the reasoning required to excel on the MCAT.
One of the best professors! His exam are straightforward from his review. Make sure you study the review and her ppts.
Dr. Brinn is a friendly guy one-on-one, even if he does crack jokes at students in lecture. He was helpful going over old exams during office hours. My only gripe was that he hinted repeatedly at a curve and then there was none. I suspect the co-teacher played a role in that decision. No curves on any of the exams or grades.
Amazingly knowledgeable about the subject material and he cares about his students! So refreshing. Take this class, you will learn A LOT and enjoy it as well!
Dr. Brinn is a good professor overall very knowledgeable about Biology had for first half of semester for Bio II. Tests came straight from review which he gave prior to each test. Made class interesting even though his jokes were corny at times.
Dr. Brinn is an amazing professor! He keeps class extremely interesting with his jokes and definitely helps you understand class content. There are 3 exams total but the 3rd is optional if you are content with your first 2 exam grades and a presentation and article discussions throughout the semester. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM :)
Prof Brinn is really good. If you have some interest in marine life, def take this class. 3 exams (last one is optional), couple discussions, and a group project which was very easy. If taken with the lab, its even easier... also u don't have to come to class, just come on discussion and exam days.
He is the best, he gives 4 test and 1 final, Iclicker questions and articles discussion. He is always willing to help the students!! he is the BEST!!!
The only problem with this class if you have to show up for the clicker points. The professor makes the class really simple. The material isn't hard. It's all easier than BSC1010.
Explains things clearly in class, but will help you big time if you GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. He asks questions in class that count towards the grade sometimes, so I highly suggest attending every class. Study his powerpoints and reviews, his tests are not really based on the textbook. Any extra credit may save you in the end!
The key to passing his class is simple. Read the chapter before class then pay attention and make notes in the lectures.
Brinn is super friendly and knowledgeable about his field. More than willing to help students, practically begs you to go to office hours so he can get to know you. Class consists of 4 exams, final, and article discussions. Lectures sometimes include somethings not in the book so show up. Overall very straightforward professor.
Took bio 2 with him Summer A. AMAZING professor. Honestly, I have never enjoyed a class as much as his. His humor and personality kept me engaged during even the most boring lectures (the material, not him). 3 exams, article discussions, and participation are part of your grade. Make sure to do well on all of them. YOU'RE THE BEST, DR. BRINN!
Brinn is the man. Put in the work and you'll get an A
He was a very good lecturer! His reviews went perfectly with the exams! As long as you paid attention during the lecture and studied the reviews you will pass! He is also very funny and playful. He keeps the class going and makes it easier to understand the material.
"Where do you get your fish from?" "Publix, yeah." He is actually so funny and this makes his lectures very entertaining. It helps a lot if you attend his office hours before any exam so you can get a better feel for what might be on test and a summary of the main topics covered in class. I definitely recommend him!
I loved this class. He's cute.
Brinn is the head of the biology department at BBC, what am saying is that he's very sarcastic with his lectures but he really knows his stuff which makes the material easy to learn, clicker questions are big like 30% of your grade big and exams aren't easy so expect to study for them, also he's always available to meet with you just email him.
Point blank if you don't study I can PROMISE you, you will not pass this class. Me myself, I really had to get it together after the first 2 tests. Make sure you read the articles he gives for clicker questions because those can literally make or break your grade more than the tests will. Study a chapter each day and you will get an A
He is the best I ended with a B bcuz i didnt really study for the final because 3 classes for summer A but hes reviews for the test is everything u should know. the best bio professor ever might be the only one at fiu that really cares about student after test u can check for grade for error about 15-20 students in hes office its remarkable awesome
currently sitting in this class. HORRIBLE. Makes you work very hard even though we are not science majors. every week is an exam/project/paper or some other BS that takes ALL your time, Don't do it to yourself...I'd Rather have Charles Manson teach me.
he's a great professor but when i took him he was trying this new thing of flip course, so it was hella hard but if you study & read a lot u can do good. but honestly if u care more about getting a good grade, take another professor.
Class taught by his TA Ely K. Very good class easy, fun, and interesting.
The Spring 2017 was the first time he used a flipped class were you would do worksheets all the time in class in groups of 4. Attendance was mandatory for the clickers and the worksheets. If you read the book and study well you can get an A.
Very good professor. I had him for Summer A and he taught using a flip class where he'd give out worksheets and you'd work in a group. Clicker questions weren't too bad as long as you study and read the text prior to coming to class! He's always available to help in his office hours so I recommend using them!
Dr. Brinn is great, I do wish he would leave politics outside of his classroom. But aside from that he taught a flipped class, where you write (handwritten) notes that can be used in class assignments. Overall if you dont procrastinate you should do really well! BTW: TAs are amazing help during class assignments USE THEM!
His course consists of 4 (50 question) exams & a final cumulative exam. If you read the chapters, you'll get an A. He's a flipped course, so you only do group activities, clicker questions, article discussion in class & HW. He lectures that last 15 min of class. Go to his office! You can review your exam with him for points if you argue your answer
I'm not really a huge fan of the flipped class, but I am learning the material well. However, he is very very strict with attendance, notes, phones and laptops.
I'm not learning the material well. The class is very difficult. Not an easy A. You learn and read the material on your own before class, and you only go to class to do group activities, that don't help you learn at all.
It's a flipped class where you read the whole chapter and take notes (they have to be handwritten) before class and do a worksheet in groups of 4. He touches on some topics at the end of class. Very strict about phones and laptops. He drops a couple of your lowest grades.
This class is terrible. don't do it.
He's a nice guy but this class honestly just sucks
Good professor that care's about students, but will make you put work in to earn the grade. The class is a flipped class, which takes a bit of getting used to, but I have actually grown to prefer it. Lectures are short (20 min) and the rest of the time we work in groups to apply the lecture information. Super helpful office hours.
Class at MMC didnt fit with my schedule so took it at BBC Not sure why all the hate from this semester The class format was diff, but I liked it No wasting class time going over what we could just read in our own time Slept/read on the bus from MMC BBC is super quiet lots of library space Did lab here too boat trip & lots of time spent outside
It's pretty straight to the point. There are the clickers (you need the device not the online version), the articles (you can read the morning of if you have a good grasp in biology), the notes (a MUST for class activities), and the exams (there are a total of 3 with 50 q's each). Final is made up of the exams, go to his office to get the answers.
Terrible Professor. So unorganized and is a flipped course. Dont take him unless you want to fail. TERRIBLEEEE . Barely teachessss
Hard class, but good professor. flipped class, so you have to read a lot on your own. lots of office hour availability. labs get to go out on the boat which is cool.
The flipped course makes it difficult to understand the material. Get ready to read a lot. Do not recommend
The class is a flipped class so he makes you read and take notes and then go to class and work with groups. The professor lectures the last 10-15 min of class (wish he would lecture longer). The exams are difficult and you have to reallyyyy study to get an A. He curves some of the exams and drops a couple of assignment and homework grades.
This class helps you develop really good study skills. The text book is online , free, and has smaller chapters than other books. The class is centered around board games and packets based on the reading. The class is an easy A as long you you read the chapter and come to class, thats honestly it. He keeps the same questions for final.
Terrible professor and really doesn't know how to run his class.
Student below needs English classes. Anyway this is a flipped class and I must admit initially did not like the class but later enjoyed it. Professor is very available and we learned a lot in a short period of time. Much better than a regular class.
Class is flipped and we do a bunch of group activities. Some are fun other are boring. Exams a all multiple choice questions.
Dr. Brinn is a great professor. This class will be a lot of work. It is a flipped class, so be prepared to READ the chapter and take notes before class. I have come to enjoy this, as it is very helpful to grasp material in class when you actually know at least partially what is going on. He is very available, drops hw grades, and wants you to pass.
Dr. Brinns class is not difficult but if you slack off you will be in a rude awakening. Its set up as a flip model so he wont lecture too much. This means you will be reading on your own and do worksheets during class with the occasional iclicker questions. If you do decent on the tests and dont skip class youre golden and easy A.
Just finished the course and we do need to read but he gives a bunch of extra credit. Great class better than regular lecture.
Super chill. Went to his office hours a lot to ask about the exams and work sheets and it really helps if you ask. He can be intimidating at first and that's only cus he takes can smell BS quickly. Read the chapter and TAKE NOTES before class day. Basic definitions help but a few times you needed more info. Exams can be tricky so read carefully.
lectures are actually funny and even if you arent really listening, you still learn something. his class is flipped so theres worksheets but Las can help you. the worksheets arent hard but you need to have notes from the chapter or your going to struggle. No electronics during class so read and take notes beforehand. He gives extracredit for exams!
EASIEST UPPER DIVISION SCIENCE CLASS EVER. No textbook, multiple choice and written response test, super easy because it comes DIRECTLY from the powerpoints! article discussions are easy, just participate and you get an A. presentation at the end of semester, he gives you topics to pick and then you just research. office hours were really helpful!
Textbook is free online. Show up to class and do the worksheet with your group. Pair up with people that do the reading (you too don't be one of those). Get MAD help from the LAs or him. Study what the LAs tell you, just ask them. Exams are a little tricky, just don't read too much into it. Clickers needed. Go to office hours. Easy, put in effort.
I honestly wouldn't waste my time reading the book when you can use his ppts that are super useful. He gives reviews on all chapters, which you should swear by when studying. Ofc go back to the powerpoints and the book for reference when studying from the reviews. He drops grades in all categories besides test. He cares and will help in any way he
Okay, but Richie actually made me enjoy Biology! He knows and cares so much about the topic. His LA's are well-chosen and extremely helpful. Will miss him. Def take his class if you're into fish.
This professor is rude and disrespectful. The class itself was interesting but the professor ruined it for me. I would never take him again.
Funny guy. His teaching method is amazing and def worked for me. As we transitioned to an online setting, he still made class enjoyable! TAKE HIM!
Professor Brinn truly cares about his students. He always tries his absolute best to be accessible and to provide ways for students to improve themselves and acquire the grade they merit. Brinn cares about his students and does not complicate their life. If you want a professor who cares about your education and success, he is your go to.
I took a remote class with this guy and it was a total waste of time. He didn't lecture AT ALL. You will learn nothing and you will have to work with silly groups at all times. If you want to learn nothing then go ahead and waste your money.
Great professor. He covers topics very well and is always willing to help you if you're struggling or don't understand something. One of the best professors I've taken at FIU. He's kind and caring and always wants you to succeed. exams consist of powerpoints and applying concepts that you've learned. I highly recommend him!
This is one of the best professor/course that I have taken at FIU. Online he made us have the camera on but it was honestly a great experience, it was one of the few classes this semester that I actually participated in and enjoyed. Don't let the bad reviews mislead you. Prof Brinn was even willing to advise/review the day before presentations!
He never really taught. Most of the learning has to be done on your own time. During class he will spend at most 15 minutes going over the PowerPoint and the rest of the time is you working on a worksheet with a group. I failed most of the tests and still passed due to the huge amount of extra credit and curves. I don't think I learned much though.
A really good professor, but he does teach through active learning so no lectures, rather he teaches through group activities and occasional article discussions. Homework is where you'll be doing most of your learning through the free openstax book. He's a fun professor and would recommend to those who don't mind active learning.
Dr. Brinn is an amazing professor who cares about his students. He makes tome to be available for students. This is one of the few classes that I have taken where I felt like the class as a whole was excited to be there to learn. Brinn is a fun professor, if I could take this course all over again I would it was that good!
His LA's write good reviews for him on rate my professor to balance out the bad reviews so he can stay at a 4.0 rating. That is how I got fooled into enrolling in his course and then noticed the big fat mistake I made. I only passed with an A+ because of his massive curves which he is known not to give. It was so bad that he HAD to curve. Goodluck!
Dr. Brinn is an amazing professor, always there if you need him. 4 exams, openstax hw before every class and 4article discussion quizzes. He drops 1 article discussion and the lowest 4 openstax! He is super funny and very knowledgeable. He does reviews before every test based on students availability. Office hours as well. 100% recommended!take him
Brinn is a really great guy and professor. The textbook is online and free so don't worry about that. He facilitated the remote learning and really seemed to care about his students. As long as you do the assignments (usually graded for participation), skim over the chapters, and pay attention in class you should be good. Curved a lot! Take him!
IF YOU THINK YOU ARE ACTUALLY TAKING HIM YOU ARE NOT This class was all taught by TA's which can depend on whatever you receive. It is like rolling random dice, but the class itself is super easy, in which there is a quiz every class and like 2 group projects. Labs are easy A with only a post lab after. BEWARE IF YOU DONT WANT TA'S
Took him for Senior seminar online, presentation has to be recorded through zoom and then submitted, although he is a slow grader, he is very understanding and allowed us to submit late work all the time. 10/10 recommend
Professor Brinn did a great job last semester and my group and I really enjoyed his class. He has a positive attitude and really focuses on helping students. I would definitely take him again for another course.
The lab is taught by TA's so its a roll in the dice for a good one, I got William Sample Pretty good guy. Class was normal with 3 things pre, lab and post lab submissions and a quiz each day, its all group work so the lab is usually an easy A. The Project is the big chunk with group very specific with a solid month of prep but easy if you followill
Take his class! Dr. Brinn is an easy-going professor with a sense of humor. You will learn a lot in BSC2011, so be prepared to take notes and go over the powerpoints. The textbook was free to everyone on the website OpenStax, where the weekly assignments were located. We sat in groups and had a group assignment every class. Clickers are mandatory.
This course was ran by TA's the entire time. I had Anna. She was pretty chill and made the course easy for me to pass. There's a quiz every class and a midterm and final which they give us a study guide for.
Great professor. His classes are highly engaging as they are flipped, allowing students to learn from their peers and LAs. Homework consists of some reading before classes and some article discussions. Exams could be tough, but so long as you study for them, you will be perfectly fine. I highly recommend you take Dr. Brinn for BSC 2011.
Dr. Brinn is wonderful. His classes are funny and interesting, he is very caring and he wants his students to succeed in his classes. Textbook was required on the syllabus however we never used it. Overall, he is a great professor. Easy A.
Really chill and straight to the point; by the end of his class I was convinced to add Marine Bio as a major.
Hands down the best professor I've had at FIU. Attendance is graded by in class activities with your group, however he allows you to miss 4. There's 4 exams and 1 final that replaces ur lowest grade. Such a genuine and kind professor who goes out of his way for students. His review zooms before tests are the most helpful!!! Take him!
Class was hybrid, so read before class and you'll be fine. in class activities every class which are graded my participation in groups.Allows 4 missing activities/ drops them. Drops lowest grade in every category, great exam reviews, great LAs, super nice and easy to talk to, will meet with you through zoom any time. Made learning enjoyable!!
The in class activities are a big part of your grade and more often than not they're fairly simple. Dr. Brinn is kind, caring, and honestly pretty funny. If I could I would take him over and over again. My only complaint is that the tests are pretty much unpredictable, the study guides are the overly simplified version of what's really on the exam.
Gonna say this rn DO NOT listen to the bad reviews. This professor is absolutely amazing. The LA's are incredibly kind and helpful with learning the materials. There is a lot of reading but dude it's college. If you can't handle reading then you're not going anywhere. He's very funny and was easy to work with. The material was easy to understand.
Class was chill but you still learn. Teacher was great and funny. He is bald, but I would highly recommend taking him.
Doesn't explain anything and tests are unrelated to the material teached in class
Really liked this class, it's flipped style so read the book and PowerPoints beforehand. A group assignment is done for every class so definitely attend lectures and participate. 4 exams and 4 article discussions/Iclicker, he drops the lowest article discussion though. "If you have a pulse, you can pass this class" and it's true. My TAs were GOATS!
If you take this class, PLEASE show up. Attendance isn 0% of your grade. Also, his class is taught in a flipped model, so you're expected to learn and you do activities in class based on the lesson. LAs are cool, teacher is funny. Tests are more difficult side, as they are applicative, but if you study for 2-3 hours you should be fine. Take him!
Dude sucks, he barely teaches, LA's do everything, attendance is mandatory, grades are hidden on canvas all semester.
Dr. Brinn is a kind professor who enjoys interacting with students. Class was a flipped model, so he does not lecture. You have to read the chapter before class and complete a worksheet with your group. It is graded on participation, so you can't miss more than two classes, but he will answer any questions you have. He is kind and funny
