excellent teacher, very intelligent and helpful. I had the class once a week for 3 hours and he tried really hard to make it interesting. DO THE ONLINE QUIZZES! they help out a lot! highly recommended, SO nice
love this instructor. Very down-to-earth and helpful. Probably the best teacher in the JOU department.
i liked him a lot....very friendly and easygoing....there are a good number of tests but they are cinch if you attend class
This guy rocks! He is always available to help students. One of the best professors in the journalism department.
He's an amazing professor. . . he really knows his stuff becuase he actually WORKS in a newsroom. If you're interesting in doing anything with editing, make sure to get to know him well. He's got a lot of little tips to help you get hired.
Brunson's a real guy and he'll give it to you like it is. He's always willing to help you out, so don't be afraid to ask questions. Although he's laidback, he won't let you slack. ALWAYS double check spelling and grammar. He's a great introduction for any student wanting to be a journalist.
Keeps things fun! Tests may seem hard at first, but get better once you learn his testing style. Very willing and available to help students outside of class.
Extremely helpful and knowledgeable!
awesome teacher. Will do whatever it takes to help his students.
Excellent professor. He will do whatever it takes to help you get a good grade. Really wants to see his students do well, and will make sure they do, if you just try. Seek him out for any advice about the field. Great personality.
AWESOME GUY!! so friendly!! go to him if you ever have any questions, he's a frigging genius
My favorite teacher in the JOU program so far!! So helpful, and once you get the hang of his tests, his class isn't bad. Luckily you will have to take him, so be thankful! He's great! If you ever have problems, not even with school, he is an amazing person to come to for advice and he will never turn a student away.
Brunson is a rock star.
He's a wonderful teacher and so helpful to everyone. He brings in professionals from the field to help further his points and give us real world knowledge. Even though the topic itself is boring, he tries his best to keep us interested.
He really is a rock star.
Absolutely wonderful teacher! Very nice and helpful and tries to let you out early. Easy class, but you learn a lot!
Look out! He makes you memorize the entire AP stylebook. The first half of his class is a waste of time. There's no need to memorize the stylebook if you're going to use it on the job. The second half of the class is a lot better. You actually get to edit. Watch out though, he'll 'correct' your papers to be politcally incorrect. It's random.
What would I do without him?!! He has a passion for journalism, and wants to see students aspire to make changes and a difference in their writing...he's great! WARNING: get your clip done early and write sharply
though he is a GREAT guy, super nice and sweet, i was kind of disappointed otherwise. he's a really hard grader and changing my writing style never seemed to get me anywhere, i got the same low-mid B grades the entire semester. for such a low level class he takes it a bit too seriously and applies his own style to what should be an easy class.
Such a boring class, but he tries to make it interesting. Memorizing the AP Stylebook is so tedious and feels like such a waste of time. He knows what hes talking about, but the class it boring. Nice guy.
The class was easy, grammar and those kinds of things come naturally for me...but even if they don't for you, they will after this class. Brunson's really thorough about everything, gives reasons why for everything...he gives extra credit, too, and is always available for help. Answers emails in a timely manner. Take him, he's great and friendly.
The class was more fun than I had expected, and I feel I learned a lot more than I did in editing 1. Brunson is kind of a tough teacher, but so helpful and nice.
GREAT CLASS!! GREAT TEACHER!! TAKE HIM EVERY CHANCE YOU GET!!
If you are not an overachiever and get great grades he shows no interest in you. The class is passable- its just not fun and he deff. has his favorites
Awesome teacher, no one should complain. Editing is not a fun subject, but I learned a lot. Get familiar with the AP Stylebook. If you do well, he is tremendous in helping with internships and answering questions relating to the department. Definitely take if you have the chance.
i've had other professors tell i should consider pursuing other things. brunson was not one of them. he really helped me become a better writer and he is a very positive and energetic guy. story assignments were realistic and reasonable, and i came out of that class a better writer and with a better understanding of the field.
Brunson is awesome. He teaches you everything you need to know to pursue a career in Journalism, & there's no question that he knows what he is doing--after all, he is still in the field. Editing is not the easiest class, but it is definitely doable & you will be grateful you took it, and JOU Ethics is also a must! You'll def learn plenty in both.
I had Brunson back in 05-08, and he is by far my favorite teacher at UCF. He is the backbone of the journalism program, and has an undying passion for the field. He is challenging, and I did fall sometimes, but I am grateful for everything I learned. Plus, he is always willing to help!
LOVED THIS CLASS!! Brunson is the BEST teacher I have EVER had! You have to work hard and earn your grade but he works with you and is always there to help!
Brunson is THE BEST! He can answer any question you could ever have and advise you on career planning because he has done everything in the field and is still involved in it.. The book is witty and hilarious, you need it for the online crossword puzzles and quizzes and he takes questions for the tests from it. Also, know the news! Take this class!
Professor Brunson is a nice guy, but the class is very demanding. If you're not a journalism major, don't take this class. It's like having a second job. You do a lot of outside assignments that involve interviewing people and getting an article published in the paper. He's a nice guy but has really high standards.
This is the second class I've taken with Brunson and he's the absolute best. If you're a journalism major, taking this class with him is the best way to get a taste of what you're getting yourself into. You have to put in effort but he's very fair and understanding, he's funny, and he's very helpful/supportive.
I took three of Brunson's classes when I went to UCF back in 2005-2008: Metro Reporting, Editing I, and Journalism Ethics. He is an absolutely amazing professor and person. He is always willing to help and to listen, and we still manage to keep in touch after all these years! Journalism takes a great deal of hard work, and I learned from the best!!
Brunson is a must take for a journalism class. I'm not a JOU major, but he really taught me a lot about the field and what it takes to "get out of your comfort zone." He brought in some brilliant guest speakers from all different fields of journalism and we had some interesting Q&A panels. He's always in a great mood and very personable.
This course is a well rounded intensive course for students pursuing journalism. Students are given great responsibility and freedom with the publication, and this allows for a one of a kind learning experience.
Brunson knows his stuff and is still in the Journalism field! He is a perfect example of walking the talk! His classes are intensive, but it's because he wants you to leave prepared for journalism jobs! He is very clear and always willing to help with assignments, clips/portfolio and jobs/internships! Take his class!
This class is no walk in the park if you haven't opened an AP Style book yet, but you will not find a teacher that teaches with more passion in journalism than Brunson. He's a professional and his priority is to make students employable. He is more than willing to help and is very easy to talk to.
LOVE Prof. Brunson. Definitely take him if you want anything to do with the journalism field. He will help you out in anything and he knows a LOT of people in the field so kiss up to him and he'll get you a job after you graduate! Editing 1 is not a tough class, just go to class and do what he suggests.
Brunson is awesome and so passionate about journalism, shares his experience and connections to make the class very interesting. READ THE NYT ARTICLES those quizzes matter and you won't do well if you don't. He loves stirring up conversation, don't be scared to talk it's fun! Attendance not mandatory, but none of the lecture material is online.
I cannot speak highly enough of Professor Brunson. He is a professor that actually teaches and appreciated the craft that is journalism. Brunson has a plethora of knowledge in the field and in life. You WILL have to work for your grade; he will not just give it to you. All of his classes are highly recommended. If you want to learn, take him.
Professor Brunson is by far and away the best professor I've had the pleasure of taking multiple times. He will challenge you into becoming a smarter individual, regardless of your field. He has been in journalism for 30+ years, and his knowledge speaks for itself. Simply put -- take Brunson. My only regret is not taking him for more classes.
Brunson is one of the best professors I have taken at UCF. Definitely made me want to stay in this field.
Brunson is one of my favorite teachers at UCF. He genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He is knowledgeable about his field and up to date with the latest trends in journalism. His grading criteria is clear, so you know what you're getting. Can't wait to take him again in the fall! He really made me excited about journalism.
Took for an online class. Very well structured courses, plenty of resources to help you succeed. Read the book though, the class is concept heavy and less about memorization. Gives excellent feedback if you contact him for help, would happily take gain.
Dr. Brunson is an AMAZING professor. He truly cares about his students. Highly recommend taking this class. 12 weekly quizzes, 2 dropped and a mid-term and final exam. Make sure to study the New York times well for the quizzes. Also, skim the chapters. Textbook is mandatory, but extremely interesting.
This was my third time taking Brunson, and probably my favorite class I've taken with him so far. I recommend that every journalism student take editing, as I learned so much valuable information. Grade is based off of 4 tests, but there is an opportunity for extra credit. You have to work hard, so make a study group and prepare for the exams.
Prof. Rick tells you exactly what you need to do to get an A/B in his class. Great professor to build a positive relationship with/make a good impression on if you are interested in pursuing journalism as a career. He truly cares about his students and he is reasonable and highly credible.
Prof. Brunson's class has been my favorite class so far at UCF. He incorporates guest speakers, videos & articles with his lecture so it's never boring. He is up front & fair w/ grading. There are 12 weekly quizzes over current events and textbook readings (2 lowest grades are dropped), a midterm and final, and a field assignment. Would take again.
WOW! I absolutely enjoy this class, Prof. Brunson incorporates guest speakers, videos, visuals, stories, etc., into his lectures. You read a chapter or two every week and then take a quiz and enjoy lectures for the next quiz. Very good teaching techniques and a very inspiring teacher.
I was scared for this class because I don't watch the news or read the paper. Professor Brunson is so caring and remembers every student! He will sit down with you forever to help you with anything you need. You need to take exclusive notes on readings, speakers, videos, and everything! This class is so inspiring, you'll love it!
I'm not a journalism major (it's my minor) and yet I was fully engaged with this class. Brunson is one of the best professors at UCF. The class's structure with the guest speakers, quizzes, and three tests is easy enough to handle that you don't stress it too much. You're more engaged with the guest speakers. Brunson is very respectful. Take him.
The fourth class I've taken with Professor Brunson, and definitely a good one! Learned so much about mobile journalism that I can use in the real world. Brunson gives detailed feedback that helps you learn, and he genuinely cares about his students' successes. If you're a journalism major (broadcast or print), take this class!
The class was once a week and 3.5 hours long which would normally be dreadful, but he made the class very entertaining. Every class had a different guest speaker from someone in the field and at the end of each class there is a 10 question quiz based on current events and book but no homework. just a midterm, exam, and final. He is super helpful!
Professor is very passionate about journalism and is inspiring. Class is very hard, it is no easy A. All grades are based off of quizzes and tests. He doesn't provide any study materials, just off your notes. Tests are on menial details. If you don't take notes on every little detail, you won't pass.
Professor Brunson is by far the best professor there is for journalism. He is caring, dedicated and just genuinely loves his students. He reminds me every day how good I can be if I believe in myself and everyone deserves to feel as cherished as he makes every student feel. Phenomenal professor and I will appreciate him forever.
Profesor Brunson is one of my favorite teachers i've had at ucf. I'm not a journalism major but I have learned so much in this class. The material was interesting, the lectures were intriguing and he made the time fly. You will need to study and keep up with NYT's but he give you all the things you need to be successful. Would take again!
I took this class thinking it would be easy because it was an "Introductory"class. I do not want to become a journalist, I just needed a class to complete my minor in Mass Communication. This is NOT an easy class. Take it only if you really want to become a journalist. The professor is great however, very knowledgable if you want to be in the fiel
Professor Brunson is really nice, caring and understandable man. He gave us several extra credit opportunities, invited guest speakers every class, and really inspired me to become a journalist one day. Totally suggest taking him.
He's great with lots of amazing guest speakers. You'll watch movies, take 2 exams, 11 weekly quizzes & 1 short essay paper. However, the time and length of the lecture made it not worth it for me. I still don't care for journalism, but he's prefect if that's your field. I did well, but I'm glad I'm done with a class that was that late in the day.
I thought this class was going to be boring but Professor Brunson made it so interesting with guest speakers and the 2 movies we watched. If it wasn't for his class I would have definitely changed my major. He gives such great advice and is always willing to help you with anything you need and I really hope I'm able to take him again. TAKE HIM!!!
I absolutely loved Brunson. He's definitely an expert in his field and will do everything he can to help you. His lectures are long but super fun. Tons of guest speakers from different news outlets. Super inspiring, every time I left class I felt like I learned something new about life. Very interactive with students and give great feedback.
Brunson is one of the only normal professors in the journalism program at UCF. He's super approachable and friendly. Unlike other JOU classes, you will truly learn without feeling bogged down by the courseload -- the way education should be.
Graded on 4 tests and 1 writing assignment throughout the whole semester which honestly is not bad AT ALL. If you miss the lectures, you'll miss out on key information (esp when speakers come) for the tests. Keep up with current events, but push notifications make that easy. He's super caring and very friendly.
Professor Brunson is easily one of my biggest influences for staying in the program and doing everything I can to be my best. He was not only a teacher but a mentor. Just show you care, work hard, put your all, and he'll notice. Never have I met such a supportive teacher. My only regret is not taking more classes with him. Take him every time! A+++
Professor Brunson is the best teacher I have ever had. He is engaging and he is inspiring. He makes you want to be a journalist. His classes are not for everyone because of how involved they can be, but he is truly amazing at his job.
A lot of the questions were either very easy or very hard. Not really a middle ground with that. The class consist of many videos, links, guest speakers, textbook... all which are on the test. A lot of work. The good news is he does give some extra credit options along the way besides the essay.
Professor Brunson is very passionate about journalism and it shows in lectures. Although he is a good teacher, I dont agree with the way we are graded. You are graded on like 5 different things and one chunk of that is News Quizzes. He wants you to read every breaking news article on the NYT which pops up probably 20 times a day.
Professor Brunson is such an incredible mentor and his lectures made me genuinely fall in love with journalism. He made me so excited to pursue this field and I feel so prepared to enter the field of journalism. I enjoyed this class so much, even though it was hard at times. In any of his classes make sure to read the syllabus and actually study!
Brunson really cares about his students and wants you to pass. He grades tough, but it only motivates you and you'll see yourself getting better at journalism throughout the year.
Professor Brunson is amazing! He is passionate about journalism and it really rubs off on you. He doesn't take attendance, but if you show up and pay attention you'll definitely pass. Not a lot of assignments so you definitely have to study for the quizzes but he drops the lowest quiz grade. 100% recommend this class
Professor Brunson is one of the best professors at UCF! His classes are structured in such a way that you never lose interest in the material and can walk away feeling confident that you learned something new every class. Class assignments are not too difficult but you need to keep up with readings and show up to lecture if you want to pass.
Best professor at Nicholson. You'll definitely have your work cut out for you in this class but Brunson is very flexible. If the class as a whole hasn't got to a lesson or is behind on a large assignment, Brunson will make wiggle room if necessary. Very caring instructor. Weekly current event quizzes that you must read or you'll miss those points.
Brunson was good professor, but I would definitely say this class weeds out potential Journalism majors. Attendance wasn't necessarily mandatory but there were lots of in class assignments. He's really experienced so I really recommend him if you want to learn, it's just definitely not an easy class and can be very frustrating at times.
This class can seem stressful at first but honestly the key is reading the book. You have to read the book and study in order to pass this class. He is a great professor but there are four exams and no assignments in this class which is tough if you are a bad test taker. Only one alternative assignment option which helps. Great class, must study.
Brunson is an amazing, affable guy who has a passion for what he teaches. I would always leave class not just knowing something new but having something new to think about, which is rare for a college class. He is a great mentor to all and I hope to take more classes with him in the future.
Amazing professor!! Loved having him! He cares so much about the journalism field and his students. For this class, you MUST take detailed notes and read the textbook. The textbook has really short chapters and is an interesting read. The class is long but flies by since he keeps it interesting with different guest speakers and a break.
In a lecture hall full of 100 kids Brunson will learn the names of every single person. He cares so deeply about his students and takes time to learn about you. His lectures and stories inspired me, and he made me excited to do journalism. If you want to learn what it takes to be a true journalist, take his class or go to his office hours.
Truly cares about the content and students. Content is not hard to understand but its important to come to class and use the class handouts
Professor Brunson is amazing! You can tell how passionate he is through his lectures. Even if you're not a fan of journalism, his class is interesting because he loves it so much. There's pop quizzes almost every week and you need to be prepared for them.
Great professor, who actually makes lectures interesting even if not JOU major. 6 quizzes/ 2 lowest dropped on current affairs + textbook chapters (textbook is shrt & easy). 3 exams on lecture content. No study guide so recommend making a GroupMe. All exam q are from lectures and doesn't post lecture online. Require studying a lot to do well.
I truly recommend Professor Brunson if you are looking for a teacher. He's attentive, caring, passionate, and one of the best UCF professors. He knows what he is talking about and how to teach. We read a chapter a week with one discussion post, one test, 1-2 other assignments, and you attempt to publish one article for The Charge. Take his course!
Honestly the most incredible teacher I've had the pleasure of learning from. I always left classes extremely tempted to switch my major to journalism. Brunson is sooo caring and kind, his lectures are fun and informative, and his TA Raine was an angel. If you want to see what true professional passion looks like, just look to this prof!
He was an amazing professor. Clear instructions, fast replies, always available, and truly cared. Workload was fair with readings, quizzes, and writing. He graded quickly and gave detailed feedback. He put real effort into teaching. WOULD TAKE HIM AGAIN.
Nothing against him. He's great and so is the assistant. But the current events quiz are just too much and so many, that the moment you know about them but then, another news appear which you did not know on the quiz. There is no extra credit and the textbook has so many pages in one chapter that it's difficult. The films are so long as well.
