Looks like Rick Moranis (from Ghost Busters movie). His strength is in lectures. He is clear and has many great examples to explain concepts. However, his weakness (and this is a biggie), is in eval. methods. No specific test results...to learn from.
His lectures can be long, but his tests are pretty easy. He loves the subjects he teaches, and if you like sociology you should like his classes. Would definately take his classes again, I've taken 2.
This lectures are sooooo long. Most people leave half way through because they cannot stand listening to them any longer. This tests are hard and do not correlate with the book or the lecture.
Great teacher, loves what he teaches, but his tests are rather hard (mainly because there is so much info covered on each exam).

Not to much text to read, but the tests are pretty hard.. this is a class where you really gotta attend lectures
He's a nice guy, but I had no idea what he was talking about. Everything he said seemed pretty easy to understand, but the tests were intense. I went and talked to him, and got even more confused. I wouldn't reccomend this class.
Do not take if you a 1st yr! I'm a senior and I struggled.Grade is based off 3 tests and some online disscussions. TESTS SUCK! I was the only one in huge group of friends to pass the class. I worked my butt off to pass the final. Take with diff. teacher!
Idunno he bugged me 4 some reason. I didn't find it to be that hard of a class unlike others, just do the online stuff & pay attention & U should be alright. Very informed about the topics & pretty intresting material but like I said I found him annoying.
His lectures are really long and hard to pay attention to. His tests cover a ton of information but aren't that long. You have to attend his lectures or you won't do good.
Don't read text, go to class or test will be crazy hard, not a bad guy just a boring monotone speaking
I thought the material was basic knowledge...UNTIL the tests came around which were MASSIVE DIFFICULT. I like the guy, but his tests are out of this world.
Great Professor!!!!
I had a lot of fun in his classes
I took about half a dozen courses from Rick - including my capstone. He MADE my college education and gave me passion for working in this field. Great guy and awesome teacher!
I took about half a dozen courses from Rick - including my capstone. He MADE my college education and gave me passion for working in this field. Great guy and awesome teacher!
looks and sounds like George Castanza from sienfield, good guy though!
He was pretty disorganized in this class. Expectations for essays and presentations were very unclear and seemed to change constantly, and the tests were excessively obscure. Most of the class was spent studying a book HE WROTE! Has potential elsewhere, but this class pretty much sucked.

He was really good and funny.
what can I say? He was a nice guy, but lectures were off the wall boring. And his tests were THE hardest I've ever taken. No matter how hard you studied, it was difficult because he had those multiple choice answers with the words: none of the above, two of the above, mostly the above..stuff like that.
thirsty thursdays are now out of the question since i have a test/quiz every friday of the entire quarter. rick is passionate and means well but i have never zoned out more in my life until i heard him speak. and yes the tests are in no way a piece of cake.
Bulcroft tried to help out, but he could never, ever take what he teaches in class and transfer it to the test. Don't take this class if you want good grades, but in my opinion I feel he's a butthead.
If you're a participant in OC/40 night; don't take this class. All your thursday night plans will be ruined for the sake of a Sociology quiz every friday. As easy as "quiz" should sound, they aren't. Rick has got to be the worst professor I have had at western. I am so interrested in Sociology, but this is my least favorite class.
His were the hardest tests I've had in my 3 years at college. You will have no life on Thursday nights because the tests that are Fridays will consume your entire evening. They're 25 qs but worth 5pt He also insists on having lecture after the quiz and will talk right to the end of class, sometimes over.If possible take 260 w/someone else! Boring!
his class was boring, and not helpful.
It is a boring class and a fairly hard subject. He talks long on uninteresting subject matter for the most part. It would have been a lower grade but because he did teach what was the subject matter, and it is inherantly not easy stuff, I had to be fair.
Class was realtively easy, but the TESTS were sometimes tricky. The class average on the final was 61%...so, whatever you make of that.
His class was interesting, but I had to have an energy drink in me before I went to class. Bulcroft uses powerpoint slides, he has quizzes every week, which were hard! With two midterms, an easy project and a final (Hard)!
His tests are very difficult (all of the above, a and c questions), study guides are not helpful, and the group project is ridiculously time consuming. Take with 2 easier classes if you want to take this course from him. Does not show up for class on time ever.
Doesn't make it an effort to come to class on time, which i found to be rude. His tests are heavy - mult choice, short answer AND essay. for the first test study all of the models early, it will help a lot. his lectures are weird & hard to follow.
for the first test be sure to read the family stress management book, he will test you more on that than the other book. the second part of class focuses more on the family interaction book, be sure to read it because his lectures basically are straight out of the reading but his are lectures are often abstract so read up to get a better picture.
He assigned a lot of work. Two 10-page papers, 2 tests, and a project. If you did the work well, you got fairly good grades. I learned a lot, I worked my ass off.
Pretty dry material, and the professor didn't do much to make it more interesting. There are quizzes every week, and discussions online that take forever to get graded. Overall it was an okay class, but I wouldn't take a class from him again.
The tests and quizzes are very hard but he always throws questions out making the scores go up.The lectures can be long, but most of the material is actually really interesting and relatable to everyday life. There are printed lecture slides, but he throws in a lot of questions from class. I would recommend the class.
Lectures were long and kind of boring at times, only take if sociology/family studying is your cup of tea. His tests and quizzes were semi-difficult,and He is a nice enough person, but quizzes every week + frustrating blackboard questions = one class i did not care for.
All of his powerpoints are posted online which were extremely helpful! He also gives study guides for all of his quizzes and tests. However, expect to have a quiz or test EVERY FRIDAY! The quizzes and tests are not easy, and are frequently hard to understand even if you have studied...
This is very difficult class. I recommend to take this class if you want to study your butt off. I will take the rest of my soc. classes from other professors from now on.
I was really excited to take this class but have found this professor to be egotistical, and completely self promoting. He is out of touch with modern times no matter how many times he says the word "modernity" and seems to have forgotten that there could be anything but a heterosexual experience. I would not recommend this professor to anyone.
I never ever wanted to go to this class, mainly because I would have to listen to this teacher. He is rude and self-centered, not helpful at all. I do not recommend this class or teacher. He wrote the textbook so be prepared for his speeches on that.
One of the best prof's I've had yet. Yeah, his tests can be hard but I think he has the right to make them difficult since he explains stuff so well. I agree he can come off as arrogant, but it's not "in your face", so deal.
He's very into himself and it's pretty obvious. He wrote the book and is very proud of it. Come to class, take notes, and you'll be fine. Reading the book is a good review because he lectures directly from it for the most part. Expectations pretty clear, but if you can take the class from someone else, do it.
Very into his book. Explains way too long on a simple topic. Interesting class but got behind in lectures because he took too long
He?s not the best or the worst professor by far. He?s definitely proud of his work. Sometimes it seems arrogant but at least he thoroughly understands the topic(s). If you go to class and take notes, getting a B is reasonable. The tests are difficult, though, and the textbook could be helpful for both studying and discussion posts on blackboard.
Terrible, I couldn't stand the guy. He would ramble on all class about one simple little topic and then complain as to why he was behind. Also his wife is a dean of a college and he's gunna be damned sure everyone knows it.
Very straightforward with expectations(study guide basically lays out test), reading is a bit dense but lectures are amazing! :)
I took this class online. Overall, good professor, clear expectations, tests were right out of the lectures/text. Quick to respond to questions via email, lots of time for assignments, lectures can be slow, but the subject material was always interesting. He was always understanding of any concerns and a nice guy, I’d take a class from him again!
I really loved all the material, and thought it was pretty easy to understand, but the tests are HARD. Not normal hard, like trick-question hard. Most of his quiz and test material has all the right answers for a question but one could be "more right" than the others. I wouldn't recommend this teacher.
This guy wrote the book so that says a lot about him. Overall a good class, cool material, but he was only lecture which got annoying sometimes. And his tests were really hard. A discussion post every week.
He is easily one of the worst teachers I have ever had at Western. I did not learn a thing because I was constantly bombarded by absurd amounts of work. We would have 3 assignments at once while being expected to study for the exams in the same class. Do not take a class with this professor unless you have LOTS of time on your hands.
It's true that this professor is kinda full of himself, but his lecture style is effective and he's very passionate about his field. Go to class because his lectures are very important. His slides won't give you all the info you need for exams. I recommend the class!
Absolutely loved this class! The exams are extremely hard, but a lot of effort from you can pay off. All the slides are online- but you should go to class if you want to do well. This class is great and gives you information to use later on in life. MUST be comfy stepping out of your comfort zone/values. Favorite class at Western so far!
He is a very nice man and you should definitely go talk to him if you are struggling in the class. His lectures kind of go long and off topic, making it kind of confusing. Exams are worth a lot of your grade which sucks. Need the textbook for exams. He talks really fast. Really need to be in class to take good notes!
Study guides are very helpful! He rambles in class a lot so you get very behind and don't get to cover all the work. Lectures are long, boring and at times confusing. He talks really fast with no pauses which makes it hard to take notes. He's not horrible but definitely could work on becoming more concise as a speaker.
This is by far the worst class I have ever taken in my life. Absolutely not a single thing was interesting about the class and it was also the most difficult class I have taken. Test are extremely difficult and online discussions are graded very harshly, so instead of helping your grade like he says it does, it hurts your grade.
Loved this class! Bulcroft makes in unnecessarily hard but I still enjoyed it. Exams are very tricky he tries to stump you. Very nice and helpful if you go in during office hours which I recommend. Great class if you are pursuing Psych it helped with my other classes. I would recommend a class with him but make it your "hard class" of the quarter.
I never felt it necessary to rate a professor - but Bulcroft was so awful I feel it a service to my fellow students to do so. Worst. Professor. Ever. - Arrogant. Snarky. Rude. Boring lectures that fly way off topic. And the tests are ridiculous. He's tried to make them easier, he 'just can't'. - Hate from a student with an A average. Avoid him!
Class was extremely boring, he didn't seem to make much of an effort to make in more interesting either. Loves to talk about himself and will probably offend each student at least once in class with the way he presents material. Easy, but a tedious and horribly boring class and I would recommend a different class to fill a social science.
Professor Bulcroft is an awesome teacher and he makes a serious effort to make sure that people understand the material he teaches. He expects that you make your own study guides but if you show up and take notes they are super easy! Make an effort, email him, go to his office hours if necessary and he'll notice that effort and give you an A!
Stay away from this professor, especially if you aren't a Soc major. His classes are GPA killers. Any other professor would be a better choice. It's too bad he teaches all of the family courses. Not worth the hassle and headache.
He is a great proff. His class was really interesting and the exams aren't very difficult.
I didn't find him to be as full of himself as others have said. My gripe is the lectures are super long and boring. I skipped class a lot, but since he posts lectures online and a lot of the material comes from the book (and he posts study guides) I did just fine only going once or twice a week.
He's late for class, yet insists on lecturing to the very end. He got WAY off from the syllabus but never bothered to update it. Clearly been teaching this class for too long and doesn't bother to prepare for lectures, meaning he goes on and on and doesn't get anywhere. Presents the material in a REALLY arrogant way. Will call students out.
Don't listen to the the bad critiques about Professor Bulcroft I've taken 3 classes from him and he's wonderful! If you are willing to read and understand the material and ask for help he is most definitely willing to help. His test are definitely tough but he's an easy grader when it comes to any written assignments. MUST STUDY FOR EXAMS!
Best class I have ever taken at Western, I learned so much and thought Bulcroft had a good outlook on family life in general. This class has shaped my sociology career and has inspired me to become a family counseler. Be prepared to learn and you will.
This professor was unorganized & his instructions unclear. His tests were worded VERY poorly and really hard. Thankfully he graded on a curve or my grade would have been much, much worse. I would not take a course from this instructor again.
If you love long lectures, this class will not be a problem for you. Prof. Bulcroft is a fine professor, he makes jokes and even brings his dog Margo into class regularly. But if you don't read the textbook, and only take simple notes, the concepts of the subjects may easily slip by your understanding and kill your grade.
Disorganized and poor time management. Doesn't stick to syllabus schedule. Impossible to contact. Doesn't allow adequate time to complete assignments. Expects memorization of every detail from long lectures for exams, rather than main ideas. Required a group project and two exams for final. Would not recommend taking a class from this professor.
He's very adaptable and easy-going. This class isn't too difficult, but don't expect to get good grades by only reading the book because he often mentions things in class that are not in the book that will be on exams. In my opinion, he sets his students up for success but it's up to you to take the opportunities to actually be successful.
Tests are tough
Bulcroft is awful. He is confusing and expects way too much from students. He words his lectures and tests so elaborately they're difficult to comprehend, and his tests are RIDICULOUS, vague, and count for most of grade. You will only do well if you can teach yourself and are gifted. Luckily, he curved the grade; otherwise I would have gotten a C-.
He assigns too much homework. I just did the math and it's over 60 pages of writing over the course of the quarter. For a 300-level class, that is WAY too much and not okay!
Really nice and funny professor. Tests are online, which is really helpful. His feedback isn't very pointed though, so just beware of that.
I'm only halfway through this class - I've barely gone and have an A-. I actually very rarely go unless I have to for tests. I just hate this class honestly, which makes me sad because I love the subject of Sociology. Bulcroft is just so boring/uninspirational and lectures are horribly long. Tests are tough but slides are online which is helpful.
Very condescending during lecture. I have watched him laugh at students who answer his question incorrectly. The class content is interesting and I have heard positive things from students in the other professor's class, but Bulcroft makes everything unnecessarily difficult and you should avoid his classes.
This class would've been better if it weren't over 2 hours long twice a week. Bulcroft had a tendency to really ramble about things, which was sometimes great as he always gave a million and five examples. He just talked certain things to death. Everyone said tests were hard, but I didin't find them especially so, just a lot of all of the above.
This is the third class I've taken from Bulcroft and I love him! He can come across as pompous but is really passionate about what he teaches and has a good sense of humor. Be prepared to study and make a group presentation. I've gotten A's in all the classes I've taken from him. His lectures are fascinating. Planning on taking more from him!
I took SOC390 with this professor last quarter and absolutely loved the class. It was hard, but I got an A because there was so much stuff graded. SOC332 was miserable. It wasn't interesting, the lectures were horrible, his tests were impossible (and he specifically said he would never change their difficulty). DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Least favorite class I've ever taken and I'm a junior so I've had my fair share of classes. He gets further behind each class. He can spend the entire 80 minutes on one bullet on one powerpoint slide. His examples are lengthy. He comes across as pompous. His quizzes are vague at best. If my major didn't require this class I'd drop it immediately.
Terrible Professor!! Worst class I have ever taken, goes off on rants and the quiz's are extremely difficult. Lectures are long and boring.
Every class we get further and further behind. He keeps pushing back assignments and tests and constantly changing the format of the class. This class is required for my major, but if it wasn't, I would drop it. Super stressful to have everything always moving and changing, especially in winter quarter since it's short.
Bulcroft is amazing and funny, he does tend to ramble off a lot. But it is interesting majority of the time. The questions on quizzes and test are harder than you think. If you have a group to take them with, you will definitely do good.
He does post his powerpoints online, but it is better to go to class and hear him explain it in class though his lectures are quite long . Quizzes are unexpectedly hard and the class averages about 70% before he adjusts the score which is helpful. He's a pretty disorganized professor and keeps falling behind schedule and keeps pushing things back.
I honestly loved this professor. I never really had a desire for sociology until I took this class. He's such a cute little man and is really good at explaining things and making them somewhat interesting!
I had high expectations for this class because it's a subject that I really enjoy, but the professor made it one of the worst classes I've ever taken. He had an arrogant attitude and constantly made sweeping generalizations about large groups of people, which was offensive and unnecessary. This ruined what could have been a very interesting class.
His lectures are the most boring lectures I have been in. He will stay on one slide for literally an hour and a half and then rush through the rest of the slides because he's behind. The answers for quizzes will be things that we've never talked about in class. He doesn't reply to your emails. DON'T TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
He used the syllabus from the previous quater. for summer quarter which confused me on exact requirements and instructions. Amount of pages for movie responses 7-12 pgs final paper 8-12 pgs. This is summer quarter why is everything from a normal 3 months jammed into 2? Movies can be found online, don't rent. Study guides are insanely long.
I had him twice this summer quarter. My previous rating (below) is the same for this class. Stupidly ridiculous avoid if you can.
I'm a senior at wwu and have had my fair share of classes. He is the worst professor I've had. His lectures are awful. He will go on the worst tangents that last for over an hour and only completes 1 slide in a 2 hour and 10 minute class. I would never recommend this class to anyone. He interrupts you during your presentation and calls you out.
Probably the worst professor Ive ever had. All of our exams were online and open book but he made the final in class and didnt post the extremely long study guide until 2 days before the final. Hes extremely pompous and makes offensive generalizations about groups of people. He makes you feel like an idiot if you dont understand a concept.
Tests can be hard, but once you have a taste for the kinds of questions he asks it's easy to do well. Also posts all of his slides online which helps. Can be unorganized, but I prefer his relaxed approach to getting through the syllabus rather than a prof who's crazy strict about it. lectures are easy to listen to def would take him again.
Bulcroft has long, confusing, boring lectures, and you really have to work to do well. He's also kind of old-fashioned and stuffy. Not very enjoyable.
He tends to go on a lot of tangents during the 1.5-hour class. If you are good at taking notes you might be fine, because you can NOT just go off of the slides. He will only go through 1 or 2 slides and just talks for the rest. The tests are online and open book, however, most of the questions are on what he talked about, not the slides.
I was in this class for a couple of days and finally switched to a different class because it was FAR too hard, especially for a class with no prerequisites. Classes are 2 hours and 10 mins, there are a LOT of tests, and he straight up says he grades hard and will not accept ANY late work or excuses. Very very strict, would NOT recommend.
The lectures never make sense. Its his own book so heavy confusing tests. Teaching style is average.
He was very late on grading. His lecture videos were always so long. And when it came to studying for the exams what was on the study guides wasn't always on test.
He took an extremely long time to grade assignments. On average our essays would get graded about four weeks after they had been turned in. He did not return my emails, which is crucial to online courses. We had to do three 8-12 page papers for a class that is not a writing proficiency course. Overall poor experience.
My friend warned me about taking a course with Bulcroft and I should have listened. We had to write (3) 8 pg. papers. Passing tests requires watching the painfully long lectures. Use the study guides and you'll be fine. Don't expect any email responses. Assignments unclear. I'd get an unnecessary root canal before taking any of his classes again.
Professor Bulcroft is interesting and enthusiastic about sociology, but lectures are long and slow. The class seems to drag on. No textbook is required but gives a lot of readings that are long. Tests and quizzes are based off of a lot of terminology from lectures and can be difficult if you haven't been or don't pay attention in class.
I dropped this class. Lectures drag and drag and drag. He posted the wrong test for us to take as an online course. Didnt respond to any of my emails. Took so long to give feedback on my first assignment that I couldnt turn in my second assignment on time, because the second assignment depended on the feedback from the first. Awful. Avoid.
Dr. Bulcroft is a great lecturer! He lays out concepts in a memorable way, which makes the exams (taken on Canvas) super easy. He answers questions concisely and guides class discussion in an engaging way. There's no textbook, which saved me $. If you're interested in the subject, I'd definitely recommend taking a class with Rick!
Terrible professor. Five page papers due at least once a week on topics discussed after the papers were due. Discussions consisted of Rick talking more and interrupting students. Study guides were simply all the slides in question format. Took forever to get stuff graded and comments nearly always had spelling errors. Do not recommend taking him.
Made the class feel bad about the university we attend, "You're coasting by, I used to teach at University of British Columbia, etc". Nice guy, but dry lectures and rough quizzes that I often disagreed with.
The content of this class made you think, but the lectures were WAY too long and the teacher would get on lots of unrelated tangents. Tests were pretty hard, but the discussion post are graded very easily. A lot of the test content was from the lecture so you can skip class, but you'll miss a lot of important info. Not worth it for a GUR.
He wasnt that accessible outside of class and when he was, he was harder to follow than in the lectures. The study guides helped a little, but basically no payoff for the amount of work they took completing them. His dog was cute though. Find a friend to take the quizzes with *theyre online.*
DO NOT TAKE
Prof Bulcroft is very educated and his lectures are extremely thought provoking. Quizes are worded kind of hard but if you show up to class and pay attention to the things he stresses a lot you'll do fine! He is a true sociologist, in the way that he may speak in ways to get you to think or ways that are blunt but it's not personal. Learning a lot.
Nice guy, the tests are ridiculously hard and dont reflect the material too well. The study guides are long and do not really help too well. Also, the tests are timed (online) and the questions are extremely confusing. This class is not bad the tests are just really tough.
Bulcroft is a nice guy but tends to go off topic and barely talks about the things that he points out in his study guides. Its like once you reach taking the test online, you suddenly get asked questions about topics that you dont even hear in class. But yet im skipping his class alot & still doing fine. But I just wish he would elaborate more.
Tests dont reflect lecture material. Lectures are long and he doesnt stay on topic. Lectures on his opinion a lot. Shows up right on time or late to class and leaves right when its over, so hes not at all accessible to students. Tests are frustratingly hard (even if you go to class and take extensive notes.) Need to be in his head to do well.
Bulcroft is kind of all over the place with his lectures, he never gets through them on time and we got very behind in our class. The quizzes are pretty easy but don't seem to reflect the study guides. He lectures his opinion a lot and will spend a whole hour on one slide in his lecture. I feel like I barely learned about family. Do not recommend.
Bulcroft despite many opinions is a great professor! If your concentration in SOC is the ideas of family/ relationships you will find his long lectures overall interesting. Tests are difficult however with 2 attempts online I deem it fair. Papers are long (10-12) pages however I would not consider his grading harsh. This was my 2nd course with him.
Bulcroft was an interesting one. I agree with the reviews saying his exams are really hard and meant to trick you, but given that they're online and you get two attempts I still did fine. I never went to class besides when we had group work/presentations. I definitely thought it was an interesting class and he's not a tough grader. Not bad honestly
Dr. Bulcroft honestly made me a little uncomfortable in his required zoom meetings, made students answer questions about there Socio-Economic Status. Otherwise hes your typical read of power-points professor. An interesting subject, but less than interesting way of going about it. Watch lectures in 2x and youre good. Take notes, not the worst
Rick uploaded 2 lectures a week that were around an hour each and we were quizzed weekly on the material. There are two movie response assignments that are easy, but they don't feel relevant to the class. Your final is a literature review that he gives little guidance on and provides a vague rubric. There are much better SOC classes to take.
I have been in this teacher's class for six weeks and he has graded a single thing (of seven things). He also has his canvas page set up for fall quarter of last year. I am 100% certain this teacher has tenure and, therefore, does not care about getting back to his students in a timely manner. At this point, hiring an AI may be more cost effective.
Unfortunately one of my least favorite classes I've ever taken. Weekly quizzes are worded to trick you, his lectures are long and uneventful, and weekly discussion responses are to be 3-4 PAGES which is completely inappropriate for a 200 level class. I've gotten A's in all other soc classes I've taken... and I'll be lucky to even pass this one.
Maybe in person Prof. Bulcroft would be better... lectures are long and boring, just reading off of powerpoint slides. Weekly quizzes are scheduled weirdly, obviously not proofread, and confusingly worded - so very frustrating. He is very hard to get ahold of when needing to contact him. Probably wouldn't take one of his classes again.
I took this online and I shouldn't have. The lectures are very long and kind of all over the place. Taking notes is really hard in this class and I am even a good note-taker. The quizzes and tests are unreasonably hard. For example, the lowest score on our midterm was a 37%. The good thing is that you can take the exams twice.
Bulcroft was extremely disrespectful towards all students, & was defensive when any critique of the assignments or lectures were brought up. He purposefully mis-gendered a student, and whenever we would ask questions to clarify, he would point us back to the textbook-- which he wrote. I'm glad he retired-- no student deserves a teacher like him.
