Lectures are pointless and misleading. The best descriptors of him as a lecturer are: boring, not funny, monotonous, irrelevant, condescending, liberal, and confusing (as well as confused). Have I said enough?
Lectures are pointless and boring. Burkhauser seems to lecture with an overly liberal tone. Unfortunately, this class is better if you study extra hard out of the book rather than coming to lecture. What an awful learning experience.
I have no doubt that he is smart, but he has no business teaching college students. His lectures consist 99.9% of reading verbatim from the book, and are therefore valueless. Worst of all, his test questions are worded in a way that only he can understand
what can i say, he's the worst lecturer ever. just get ready to go to lecture and take a nap for as long as the lecture goes. tests are impossible, and he allows no room for rebuttal.
Terrible professor....the exams are terrible, questions are vague....I went through the median grade report and on average ECON 101 students during spring semester have done significantly worse than those who take it fall semester....what does that say
Very smart but not a very good lecturer. My advice: read the book and go to review sessions. Questions on exams an incredible pain in the a**. He does respond promptly to emails... but the responses arn't that helpful anyways.
He taught me econ of social security, which was econ based and politically swayed...a small class and a good experience, whether or not he was anything more than adequate as a professor.
stay away- useless lectures, hardest tests, a horiible professor. enough said!
Rambler, cocky, and arrogant. Dresses up in a black suit to lecture one day and pronounces, "THIS is what an economist looks like!" 'nough said.

Awesome teacher. The exams are kind of hard but you really leave his class knowing a lot about economics. His style of teaching is very easy to follow, and I founf him to be a pretty amusing guy.
Worst Professor I have had at Cornell. His lectures are basically right from the book. He is a cocky jerk and really has no reason to be either. I love the only good comment on this page. The multiple mistakes makes me want to believe it was probably writen by one of his non english speaking TAs
the worst professor ever. someone needs to tell him, he obviously thinks he can teach, because he still does it.
Hes a jerk, but the class is pretty easy.
I don't know why he has received such poor scores. Yes, a great deal of the material he covers in class is from the text, however he makes econ understandable. The tests are hard, requiring you to take the basic vocab and concepts you have learned and apply them to different problems.
Hes a great teacher
I find the textbook more enlightening than his teaching. He loves to repeat simple concepts, and glosses over hard ones outside the syllabus (have no idea why he brings them up in the 1st place) You can not go for a single lecture and ace this course, if you do the readings. Lecture = waste of time
decent professor - despised economics before his class - now am going to major in it. my new found interest is not spurred from his teaching - the book's great and often more informative than he is
Interesting lecturer, was usually able to hold my attention for at least half the class. However, it would have been better if the TA's spoke English. The tests were really hard too.
Great prof! He made econ interesting and related it to real life. TA were terrible, none spoke english. Great lectures, fair tests.
Easy to follow class. His lectures are virtually identical to the book, his problem sets are similar to his tests. If you pay attention, you can easily do very well in his class.
Extremely arrogant - loves to waste students time with irrelevant cartoons and movie clips. The book is excellent and if you can teach it to yourself you'll be ok. Try to get a TA who speaks English!!
This class is soooo boring. You have to go to every class except for 5, and Burkhauser is arrogant.
I found the class to be pretty easy...he lets you know what he expects you to know for the test, he clearly presents the material, and despite being a bit arrogant is a funny guy. Toss up between he and Abowd for Econ 101, depending on who you ask.
Realy this class is very easy. Pity that he's a arrogant prick who makes you go to the lectures as it kinda feels like cheating. My TA said that section was optional.
Good professor. I don't get why people say he is arrogant, because I haven't sensed that at all. He is a nice guy who tries to reinforce key concepts. The readings are necessary. Sections are not.
I hated the prof. The subject is easy, but he can be a complete ass at times. I hate him. Take the other econ class. AVOID!
Online problem sets are easy but generally not helpful for tests. Clear, thorough lectures and very repetitous. Makes book almost unnecessary. Other than that, his tests are fair just like his practice ones. Sections go over lecture questions. Get ****al or Plamen as your TA, and you'll be fine.
The man is completly egotistical and arrogant. He doesn't even look at you in the hall... forget about knowing him, and he can't hold an intelligent conversation with him because he's too wrapped up in himself to actually teach or answer questions. His lectures are good once in awhile, although for the first 30 minutes he talks about nothing.
prof. burkhauser definitely knows a lot about economics, but his lectures are boring and repetitive. problem sets are easy, sections are usually helpful, and old tests prepare pretty well for the new ones. still, prof. burkhauser is not really a professor you want to have if you have other options.

Yeah, he's a little arrogant, but he knows his stuff so well and he is somewhat amusing in lecture. Class isn't riveting, but what do you expect from a 3 credit intro class?

bad professor
It was a good class
very unhelpful and condescending.
his style of teaching would make a lot of people hate economics. i don't because i took it in high school and i loved it.
Not very clear in lectures. Managed to confuse himself many a time over the multiple choice clicker questions that he was going over in class. He is more arrogant than knowledgable about what he teaches. Even his TAs didn't think highly of him.
totally agreed with poster 2 below me, thank god i took SUPA economics because i f-in hate this course and the way stuff is taught. econ can be so fun and interesting, if the teacher knows how to relate the material to the people hes teaching. burk. makes econ very dull...... take econ, but not from him
I hate this professor... and I'm still in the class. He's an arrogant prick who can't get enough of himself. He has confused me in every single lecture. Go to you sections if you don't understand the class. They'er sometimes helpful, even though some of the TAs don't know what they're talking about. It's a useful class, just not with Burkhauser
How sad it is to watch a classic i-am-so-unappreciated-whynotturn-bitter professor take it on his own TAs and students. Arrogance could sometimes signal knowledge, but in his case it suggests academic insecurity (no wonder he spent half of his life in a third tier econ school). And he hasn't learned his lesson. Great teachers are loved, not hated..
This man is terrible! He's so completely full of himself and he has this way of making you feel like****. He does not encourage his students one bit and he spends on average about 20 minutes bragging about himself and all he claims to know each class. Microeconomics is very understandable but he makes it so much more confusing than it has to be.
I wasnt sure at first but he helped and allowed me to take the final exam late when I had a family emergency!
i learned a great deal about economics in his class. his lectures can be somewhat amusing. he likes to prove democrats wrong in their economic policies, which is interesting. He is quite clear and knows what he's talking about. I'm glad I took the class
Very arrogant, but he's smart and has common sense. Understood material perfectly, hard tests though. He's hard to understand for textbook junkies, you can't memorize, it's conceptual understanding
The worst ECON101 instructor at Cornell. Thinks he is a greatest teacher but the reality shines through the course evaluations.
Poor teaching skills and very patronizing.
He seems a little cocky at first, but actually compared to other professors and if you do attend class, it will help you understand the material. Final is a killer and tests on material not covered in class
His teaching of economics is ideologic. He likes to engage in political issues like minimum wage but he doesn't discuss distributional assumptions embedded in economic partial equilibrium analysis.
Take with someone else who will clearly explain the basics.
He is pretty easy professor. the prelims are very easy but the final is a bit hard because half the questions are problems we've already seen while the other half is something that we never learned...
Not a clearer lecturer. I hope his research is better than his teaching skills.
Burkhauser is chill. You get to watch looney toons before class starts. His lectures notes--available online--are perfect for learning the material. If you keep really upset when your thinking is questioned, you will get a little upset. But if you are not like that, you will like the class.
He loves to write on the powerpoints.
Always underestimate the problem sets and attend the sections. The sections give important informations for the prelims. The professor is not bad. I learned to like the material through him.
The only complaint that I had with the class is that he glossed over the mathematics behind the microeconomics concept. Practice tests, clicker questions, and section handouts prepare you well for his easy tests. I found his lectures to be interesting; he spoke clearly and his thought process flowed smoothly.
Class was pretty straightforward and easy, I had never taken Econ, so when I attended office hours/section, TA explained things with more detail. Overall, professor was better than average.
Possibly the worst professor I've ever had at Cornell. If he didn't take attendance I would skip class and learn out of the book. Also, he is kind of arrogant sometimes. Will try very hard not to hate economics.
Easy class. do not know what other people are talking about. just go to class. For people wondering how to do well, he will give you a practice test. this practice test is the same, conceptually, as the test. Know how to do those problems and practice every clicker questions and you WILL Absolutely get an A! easy class..
He's an excellent professor who lectures quite well and conveys the material clearly. The class itself is quite easy, and requires very little work if you show up to class and section.
Burkhauser was great. He teaches the class very clearly and with very little math, which many people appreciate, especially non-econ majors. He also shares his research and encourages class participation with the iClickers. Overall interesting and largely easy class. I only got a B but I forgot to label some stuff and lost points on the prelim.
He is easily my favorite professor! He is so passionate about what he teaches, it rubs off! Even when I wasn't confident in the material, I was confident that Burkhauser would help me do well. He answers questions personally a lot and uses his own findings in his lectures (which is really neat!). He is definitely under-appreciated.
The entire class is just him gloating about his "findings". Very opinionated, stubborn, and hypocritical. If you're a Libertarian who enjoys being told what to think, you'll love him. Almost every paper you read is his, and you'll be denied all opportunities to hear the other side. You won't get an accurate understanding of OASDI from this class.
Lectures were boring as he just rambles on about his research and the i clicker questions. The prelims are very easy because all the material is online. Read the book and do the online problems and it will be easy. If you need extra help the TAs in section are FANTASTIC!
The prelims are duplicated from the years before; only the figures and order of the multiple choice answers are changed. Burkhauser is an interesting lecturer who likes what he teaches.
I had him for intro micro and I liked the material that he taught. The problem with him, though, is that he's nothing more than a lecturer. One can learn the material (from the book or otherwise) and still mess up on his prelims because he doesn't teach problem solving, or give answers for past exams. Take this course with someone who can teach.
Mandatory lecture attendance from iClickers. His lectures are generally incoherent, and tinted with libertarianism. Grade is based on annoying problem sets, two prelims, and the final.
holy cow his lectures are so boring and incoherent. he is terrible at public speaking and he just stutters random stuff for an hour. he is terrible at explaining concepts but the class is very easy if you read the book alone, and maybe do some practice questions. just go to the review sessions and look over the previous exam for an A.
A bit self absorbed. Reviews right before a prelim is very helpful.
Prelims 1 & 2 use the same free response as previous years, and he always publishes old tests, so do them. He lets everyone redo problem sets, too. As long as you read the book and keep up with the work, it's a very objective, straight-forward class. He doesn't teach at all, but the tests/material is easy, so it doesn't matter.
His lectures are terrible, discussion sections are the most helpful but you'll end up learning a lot on your own. 10 problem sets that he lets you redo at the end, and both prelims are pretty much recycled from old exams
Doesn't teach you anything. I received almost perfect scores on both prelims and got a B+ because the final was nothing from the lecture. If you knew econ, you were set but for some science majors that had econ for the first time, just kills your interest and gpa
For students who need a professor who is helpful and caring, this is not the man for you. He is very passionate about Economics, but does a very poor at explaining any of the topics. I failed my first Prelim with him and then ended up getting a B+ in the class. I would not recommend him and I truly believe Burkhauser is not fit to teach this class.
I'm not sure why so many people are giving bad reviews. I found his lectures interesting. Especially since he shows a relevant video clip during nearly every lecture. Makes some pretty funny comments, and some pretty slanted ones too
I rather dislike Prof Burkhauser. He wastes time doing practice problems instead of teaching new material. Some lectures waste time on court cases that aren't interesting and do not really get me to understand microeconomic theory. His teaching style is a little more preferable for people who are squeamish of math, but I wasn't a particular fan.
Professor Burkhauser is an interesting instructor. He does provide a politically conservative perspective when giving his lectures, but he also teaches the general theory fairly well. There are some days in which his explanations of key concepts are clear, and some days in which they are not. Overall, I thought that the class was a decent intro.
I always knew he was gonna be an unhelpful and unclear teacher. But the first two exams were absurdly easy so I was fine with sacrificing quality for an easy grade. But the final tested us on things he never said or were in the textbook-some didn't even relate to economics. Avoid this teacher he'll really hurt your GPA and/or passion for econ
Terrible. Just Terrible.
His lectures consists of asking I-clicker questions then reviewing the results (and repeat). He doesn't teach anything useful and his class makes me dislike economics. I should have taken AP Econ in high school...
People are way too tough on Burkhauser. He's a really nice guy that cares a lot about the subject. Problem sets are super easy, and you can take them unlimited times online with no penalty. He personally hosts review sessions, and posts every lecture online. Burkhauser definitely sets up the students for success. Overall, very good professor.
Unlimited attempts on problem sets (google the answers), prelims are very similar to past prelims and iClicker questions. The final was difficult. Literally 50% of the questions are in a totally different format than we were trained to answer. His lectures are boring, says "uh" a lot, yells at his TAs during lecture, mentions UChicago a lot
Honestly kind of funny and review sessions are so helpful. If you keep up with the reading and put in effort, you can get an A in this class
Lectures are very dry and boring. Also, his class was at 9:05am so that didn't help. He uses iClickers for attendance. His two prelims are reasonable as he gives a practice one before hand. His final is a lot harder and there is no practice one given. There are some really good and really bad TAs but attendance at the sections aren't required.
Dr. Burkhauser speaks down to his students on a daily basis, telling them that they will fail their upcoming prelim even if 70%+ of the class got his clicker question wrong. He is unapproachable and unfriendly and his lectures are extremely unclear and do not prepare you for his incredibly difficult prelims. People walk out of his tests miserable
Very good professor. Don't let the posts here scare you into not taking his class. He's a fair grader and genuinely looks out for his students.
He tends to go off on tangents during lectures and frequently loses his point. He also calls just about every concept "possibly the most important concept" that he will teach, which leads to confusion about what to expect on tests. He gives practice prelims which are very close to the current prelim though, so that helps.
Burkhauser is an amazing professor and really knows his economics! I loved his class so much! There were two prelims and a final. The prelims were pretty easy, and he gave a practice for each one that had basically the same information/questions as was on the actual prelim. The final was harder, but not impossible. I had an amazing semester!
Final had new material he never discussed, and was not in the textbook. Good teacher, terrible grader.
He is so boring that I slept in every class. But hey, his class is so easy u have to try to not get an A so what more can you ask for?
I feel that Professor Burkhauser gets unfairly criticized by people who feel that any introductory social sciences class should be a walk in the park. Yes, his final is very difficult, but doing well on it is extremely rewarding and cements your knowledge of the material covered over the 15 or so weeks prior. If you take his class, be prepared to think about all of the concepts he goes over and be wary of some trick questions, but also be prepared to learn more about economics than most other professors at Cornell could ever provide.
