Worst teacher I have ever had. Treats intro like it is 6000 level class. Test cover tooo much material.
tests are tricky, ENTIRE GRADE is based on 3 tests
This was one of the most boring classes I've ever taken. Your pillow will need a pillow.
very clear lectures. easy material to understand, but you have to know exact quotes for tests. too many notes covered on exams. only 3 grades the whole semester! funny guy, boring lectures, interresting info.
He trys really hard, and covers all the material but the tests are worded totally different! Its really hard to understand the tests, and there are only three of them!!! The threee tests are the only grade you have for him. I recommend a different teacher
He teaches the Intro to Sociology course. He is pretty boring but overall, I think he's a pretty good teacher. The class isn't that hard if you study ... if you don't, you probably won't do too well.
He is a friendly guy but sometimes the things he says makes me think he has a few screws missing in his head. Has this thing called Dr.Castons neighborhood where he compares himself to Mr. Rogers...kinda freaky. He gives u no kind of study guides for tests. He's not clear about what u need to know.
It's really hard to pay attention in his class, his tests come straight from the study guides, but he assigns a ridiculous amount of things to read, and expects you to study for his class at least 30 hours a week! (like a job!)
he makes you read the text book along with another BORING book.Lecutures put you to sleep, doesn't care about attendace, but if you aren't there you WILL NOT do very good on tests.ALL TESTS cover too much info.
for the love of god if you have this man i am so sorry, he is the worst professor with stupid ass jokes and crazy ass topics, with reading a hundred pages a night a whole nother book is to be read and only 3 grades the entire course, if you get him get the hell out
Hard tests. Majority of the class ends up with D's or F's. Crazy Guy
Very nice man, but his test are impossible to pass. He expects you to memorize quotes that he says one time. You only take 3 test and over half of the class fails them. Very hard class!! Must be willing to study a lot.
I don't know what class everyone else has been in, but Dr Caston is great professor. He gives study guides to do while you read (yes theres a ton of reading, but hey, its college) and even spends class periods talking about how to get better grades and a good job. He really cares about his students.
Good teacher. You need to go to class and listen. 3 tests(60 questions), half of the test is on notes and half on the reading. Its really easy and most of the information is common sense. He is really nice and helpful. Extremely detailed study guides before each test.
Caston is a very smart, kind, and qualified professor. It's a shame that he has to teach so many slackers who dont want to come to class or do the reading. I took him and got an A bc i went to class and kept up with reading. Great guy.
The easiness of Caston's class depends on you. He gives you each test on his study guide. I don't see how anyone who does the study guide could get less than an A. Half of each test is on the lecture but that's easy if you go to class. Caston's really cool and really funny. I recommend taking him.
He is so smart! He knows what he is doing and he explains concepts very well and gives good examples...but the tests are soo hard! The homework, reading, studying and coming to class is a must!
tests cover WAY too much material and are really really hard. it gets easier though as you go and if you come to class you will be okay. a lot of reading but you can get by skimming. dont expect to be let out early, it will never happen, and come to class even though he doesnt take attendance
Everyone gives Mr. Caston a bad rap. There is a lot of homework, but he gives study guides so you know exactly what to study for the tests. He even gives you tips on how to improve your scores and be successful in college. I liked him
He sux. Terrible teacher
his tests are really hard,no matter how much you study for them. He's always open for questions, but gives short answers. For an intro. class it's way to difficult. If you don't have to take him...DON'T!
Dont believe a word you hear from these " hes a good teacher, he teaches only slackers". Try his senior level writing intensive and basically you will be taking a graduate level course. He is without a doubt too old and senile.
this class is INTENSE!!! If you don't have tons of free time, drop it on the NOW!
he gives study guides but they are way too long.I am in college to learn & do well but with him I did not achieve that at all.He cover entirely too much info. on his exams & offers NO EXTRA CREDIT. Seems as if he was trying to teach a higher level.
EASY EASY EASY
OK maybe those 1000 level classes are easy, but try 4385 and then say its easy. He is a nice guy, but his test are crazy. Also, you might want to have a minor in english to write his papers. This class is no joke. Study......
He was one of the hardest teachers I had.I studied for ALL of his exams & still failed.Even though he gives study guides they are crazy long!I would never take a class with him again.
this man is very smart when it comes to sociology, he knows a lot about it, but he is a HORRIBLE teacher, he has no idea how to teach a class and explain the information in an understanding way. if it wasnt for the book he teaches from i would have no idea whats going on. the book is an easy read, so read, and take someone else if you can!
Dr.Caston turned out to be a great teacher who really knows his stuff.The10 page required paper drags on from start to finish of the semester, make sure that you hand in rough drafts on the due dates or you will fall behind! He loves students that come to his office hours to ask questions and show any interest.Prepare early and study hard 4 exams!!!
This class is required for SOCI majors, and it blows. If you are looking for an elective-DON'T! Those of us that are stuck taking it, if it is offered by another professor, take them instead. His paper is ridiculous! I could get someone who has a P.H.D. in English to write it for me and he would still tear it to shreds. Test were very easy.

This guy don't help and tells people YOU are in college and you need to read my 60 page long chapter with font 4 and take the test.
DON'T TAKE HIM IF YOU DON'T WANT A "D" and bring your gpa down. He gives you a study guide which don't have questions but looks like an essay. Chapters are 55 pages long with font 3. Even if you like to read you can't read all that with other classes. DO ANYTHING TO AVOID THIS GUY OR YOU WILL CRY IN H*LL I didn't get in Nursing this one clas messe
He is a nice old man who wants you to do well. he tends to babble and his class can be boring but take notes and read what he says and youll be fine...NEVER LETS OUT EARLY so take his short classes. Uses the book sooo much
great guy...loves sociology..and loves to teach it! He makes the test, and they aren't to bad...just make note cards:)...grades easy on other exercises if you complete them and you start class on time and get out on time...not a second early!...but not a bad class at all!
He is an awesome teacher, best teacher I've ever had here at ECU. Do the work and get a good grade. Turn in the paper as much as you can and you will do well. He wants you to do well as long as you put in the work. . . . and that's what college is all about right? Doing the work and getting the grade. I'm excited I get to have him again!
Good teacher, just do the work. He will help you if you go to his office. Turn in multiple drafts of the paper and you can't fail. Only ones that seemed to struggle didn't turn in some assignments.
He is very helpful and if you study and pay attention in class you will get the grade you earned!
Awsome teacher! He tells you exactly what you need to do to ace his tests! The class before the test he takes you page by page of the book to show you what will be on the test...there is no reason to fail!
Great professor! Dr. Caston is very knowledgeable about theoretical perspectives and his passion for Sociology comes across in every class. He is demanding, but if you keep up with your readings, study questions (I got an A on all exams), and turn in multiple drafts of the paper, you will do well. The paper will make or break.
This guy is the sweetest old man. His jokes aren't all that funny, but it does spice up the class. He grades very easy, and as long as you do the reading and take notes in lecture you should be absolutely fine.
He is a good teacher. He is very energetic. Just pay attention, take notes, and take notes in your book. He gives you a page-by-page of whats on the test, so take notes from that too.
I really hate going to his class because all we do is just sit there and listen to him talk. Sometimes he makes me laugh but thats only because of his facial expressions! Just make sure you read the textbook and look over the worksheets for his exams. DONT STUDY THE NIGHT BEFORE! IT WONT HELP!
babbles and babbles and babbles.. horrbily boring. tests are on 5 chapters, 40 question test. do not take this teacher if you want to keep your sanity.
You learn alot in this class. He knows his stuff! He is entertaining and funny. It is really not a hard class if you study the review at the end of the chapters. You do need to read!
Caston is a very boring teacher. Nothing exciting about his class...exams are somewhat hard. You have to read the book and read deep into detail and listen carefully to all his lectures. He is a nice man, just a boring teacher.
He's passionate about what he teaches, but the class is very boring. Attendance isn't mandatory, but don't expect to make a good grade if you don't go to class..I wouldn't really recommend this teacher, but he's not too too bad. Just make sure you READ ALL the CHAPTERS and you'll be fine.
He gave 4 test, including the final. You have 4 1-page papers to write about what you read. He is a fair teacher if you do the work. He teaches exactly what is on the test and reviews the day before every test. If you are willing to read the textbook and go to class, you will pass easily. Just do the work and go to class. I loved him.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! he is not interesting or fun. doesn't make sense. none of the stuff he says will be on the test it. you WILL regret it! and he laughs at himself (lol).
I'm a junior and he is one of the best professors i've ever had. He's sarcastic and interesting, which makes the time fly during class. If you outline the chapters and take notes like he suggests, the class is easy. GREAT PROFESSOR!
AWESOME PROFESSOR..DO THE WORK AND YOU WILL GET A GOOD GRADE. HE IS VERY HYPER (ESP THEORY CLASS) AND HE MAKES CLASS FUN. THERE IS NEVER A DULL MOMENT IN HIS CLASS. THE PAPER IS IMPORTANT...SO DO IT AND IF HE CAN PROVE YOU PUT HARD WORK INTO IT THEN HE WILL TAKE THAT INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN GRADING THE RESEARCH PAPER. HIS THEORY CLASS WAS THE BEST!
This class was SO much work but SO worth it. Caston is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches. He is always happy to help his students. He managed to make Theory fun. Weekly writing assignments and a 10pg paper that is worth about 1/5 of your grade. Be ready to do work and to have your mind blown! LOVED this class and Caston:)
Dr. Caston is so much fun. He is super helpful and loves what he does. The study guides are kind of ridiculous but the test questions come STRAIGHT from them so they are worth your time. All the tests are short answer and about 40 questions. Study hard and you'll do fine! He will give millions of handouts on the paper so you know what he expects.
I hate this class because he just talks you to death and expects you to memorize the text book word for word in order to do well on the exams. I suggest if you want to keep your sanity, you will not take this class with him.
He is a great teacher! Gives helpful handouts on how to take good notes on the book, lecture, etc. Loves his job, you can tell he is very passionate about it. Makes funny jokes and relates topics to real world situations. Go to class and take good notes on his lectures. If not mentioned in lecture, probably not going to be on test. Great teacher!
Pay attention and take notes on reading and lectures. Tests aren't impossible to pass if you study every day. Class is boring but funny because he laughs at his own jokes. If you need help you have to be the one to reach out. Wouldn't recommend him to anyone unless you really love Sociology.
He is really nice and super OCD organized. He gives out alot of handouts. The 10-pg paper is the devil though! After this past semester, there are 7 of us (out of probably 17) who have to take this class over again. GO TO EVERY SINGLE CLASS! Do everything on the studyguide and go to the exam reviews!
Dr. Caston is awesome. I had no interest in this class but I've done so well, I plan on switching my major. His tests are extremely easy, but he gives no extra credit whatsoever. As long as you read the book and receive all handouts, you will get an A. Attending class isn't really crucial, but of course I recommend it. By far my favorite teacher.
Very nice man, really wants his students to succeed. His tests are basically reading comprehension from the textbook. However, if you can't make yourself read the textbook you won't do well, but it's not a hard read. Goes page by page in the book, telling you exactly what is on the exams. Take him.
He is a very sweet man who wants his students to succeed! He uses the textbook often, he chooses 30 questions from the back of the book to go on the test so study those! The other ten questions are based off of his lecture which can be known if you study his handouts. Take him! Very sweet!
Caston is there to help and he wants his students to succeed. If you put in the time and work, you will be rewarded. Soci majors know the theory class is mandatory and there is no getting around it. Tests are easy if your prepared but he is particular about the paper. He will give you good feedback if you let him. Great teacher, very inspirational.
I loved Dr.Caston! He really loves what he teaches about and it is obvious through all of his lectures. You have to take good notes on his lectures and you must read the text book to do well on the exams, but he tells you every page in the book that a question comes from and even gives you questions that are on the exam. Great professor!
This is the thing about Dr. Caston, he really LOVES teaching sociology. The test are not hard but you have to do the study guide. I did the paper the day it was due and made a 16/40, but I still made a B in the class.
Dr. Caston is great! He loves teaching sociology and it isnt hard to tell. Tests come straight from reading the book and some questions come from simply listening to his lectures. If you cannot make the time to read the book word for word dont bother taking this class. Laughs at his own jokes which is kind of funny. Overall great teacher.
He is such a brilliant man and I hope that one day I can articulate my self as well as he can. His tests come from the study guides so you MUST do them. Overall, this was a great class and I hope you enjoy it!
He is so full of energy! He really loves to teach sociology and gets reeallly in to his lectures, but that's what makes class so great! Dr. Caston is brilliant and actually wants you to ask questions. The study guides are comprehensive, but every question on the test appears on it. You absolutely need the book. Also, go to class or you lose points.
Dr. Caston is so sweet! It is obvious that he loves teaching sociology. There are 4 tests total including the final. He drops your lowest test grade. I would take any class taught by him Tests come straight from the book and some questions come from listening to his lectures. Laughs at his own jokes which is kind is funny.
So.... this class was unnecessarily hard. Like, the lecture notes handouts that he provides are too long, you still have to take notes on top of that. The lectures are boring, his jokes are corny. Reading is the worst, with almost 50 pages being assigned. Anything is fair game on the test, so studying won't be that easy. I would never recommend him
He can make the boredom of the class a little more bearable with his humor (he laughs at his own jokes and it is hilarious) BUT it is a very hard class to pass. Rarely any of the questions come from his lecture so in order to get a good grade on the tests you must basically memorize the book. I do not recommend taking this teacher for Socio!
Dr. Caston is a great professor, his lectures are hilarious... However extremely boring unless you come to class wide awake. His test are 30 points from the book, 10 points from his lectures. There are written discussion assignments based off of the book but they are genuinely easy. Take this class if you are a good student! He gives study tips!!!!
Lectures are long and boring. Tests are hard and the grading scale sucks. Wouldn't take again.
He was overall a good professor. He really tries to make lectures interesting. Attendance isnt mandatory, but if you want to do well, go to class and take notes on lectures. The tests are mostly from the book. Then theres like 10 questions from his lectures. The tests are sorta tough, but you can drop one test at the end of the semester.
This class is easy as long as you study! Make sure you take good lecture notes and study the questions in the back of the book before the test. His tests are 10 questions from his lectures and 30 questions from the book. He's very sarcastic so come in with an open mind! He also drops your lowest test grade!
His tests are out of 40 questions, 30 from the book and 10 from the lecture. The lecture questions are very specific so you have to be there. He drops your lowest grade at the end of the semester which helps. He's very straight forward about what you need to do to get a good grade. Not a bad teacher, he laughs at himself and cracks jokes a lot.
He doesn't give any any extra credit and doesn't curve anything. He gives you 4 test, including the final, and you drop the lowest one and have an option to not take the final. Only test grades and discussion exercises(very easy). The tests come straight from the book so you need the textbook.
Dr. Castons class is extremley boring. The lectures are very specific and he assigns tons of pages for reading before the next class. I would say skip the reading but, 30 of the 40 questions for the test come from the book. He does drop one of your test grades but his grading scale sucks and he is not clear with the lectures.
Favorite class and professor I have had at ECU
Im only in my fourth week in this class and it sucks. He laughs at himself at things that aren't funny. He doesn't even talk about stuff that is relevant to the class.
Really great professor. Ive never met anyone who loves what they teach as much as he does. He gives out his notes on the lecture tells you exactly what pages to study for the tests. And lots of the questions on the test come from the back of the book. He laughs at his own jokes which is HILARIOUS b/c theyre not even funny. Start studying early
Dr. Caston is a very enthusiastic person. He LOVES sociology. As long as you do the reading and study, you will get an A.
Dr. Caston is extremely patient about what he is doing. He not only taught us sociology but gives tips all through the semester on how to study like a college student. Tests are 40 questions, 30 come from reading and 10 come from lectures. Pretty much, do your work in this class and you will pass. He's a little weird and old, but a good prof.
I would answer questions and not get the question right due to not answering it how he wanted me to. I would also get papers back and be told I did it on the wrong chapter even if it was on the correct chapter. His exams were confusing and he would not make much sense during lectures. I never studied so much to get the same results ever.
The entire class is worth 130 points...4 40 point tests but he drops the lowest one, then 5 2 point discussion exercises which are like a page long and should be more than 5 points. Doesn't really matter if you go to class cause only 10 of the 40 points are from his BORING lectures. Pretty much need to read the entire book to succeed.
Very passionate about what he teaches, and has some hilarious lecture moments. Attendance is not mandatory, but it will help on the lecture portion of the tests. He will give review questions from the textbook, and they will show up on the test.
I loved this class, its actually fairly easy if you actually read your textbooks. Literally 30 of the test questions are right out of the book and the other 10 are from the lecture. Awesome prof, just be ready to read and work hard. Not an easy A.
Hes really old fashioned and called black board electronic black board. Lectures are VERY boring. Tests are hard and inconsistent. Hes not a very good prof but a nice guy. He picks students @ random to answer questions in class which is stressful so avoid eye contact or hell pick you. He does give good life/school work advice.
He doesn't take attendance but there are write ups due on the reading almost every class. they aren't super hard, its just annoying and time consuming. You have 4 tests that are short answer. He gives you a study guide but it is so long. You can't cram for this class if you want an A. Hes a sweet guy but dont take this class if you're lazy like me
All over the place with his lectures (made it hard to grasp the info). Soci is a intriguing class to learn about but STEER CLEAR from taking him at all costs. Attendance not mandatory but part of each exam has questions about the lecture so try & go to class. Good thing is gives you discussion exercises so easy A opportunity grades other than exams
Prof. Caston's class is easy. He puts forth so much enthusiasm and energy in his lectures that I don't see how people think his lectures are boring. He is funny, too. He practically gives you the answers to his tests(not really, close enough, though). There are 5 discussions through the semester; it's not too hard. Read, show up, write: that's it.
Tests are hard, lectures are boring. He gets most of the answers out the back of the book. Personally I never read what he assigned just studied the back of the book and lecture notes. He makes it harder than it needs to be. Cool guy.
Not a person but by far the worst teacher I have ever had.
Take anyone else. Lectures make no sense yet you get tested on them, and the other things you get tested on are right out of the book (for the most part) but it is so much information of reading to be tested on about 30 questions (out of roughly 50 pages of reading). He's also really judgmental and talks about politics and religion a lot.
Strongly suggest taking with a different professor. He tests out of the book but does not lecture from the book. The tests are 3/4 based on the book and 1/4 based on his lecture. Attendance is not required but if you miss the lectures you will struggle on the test. He does not know how to work a computer so you will not know your grade till the end
Dr. Caston is absolutely amazing! His lectures are awesome and he gives tips on how to be a better student throughout the semester. The tests are 40 questions in total with 30 from the book and 10 from the lectures. As long as you pay attention in class, read the chapters and take good notes, you'll get an A.
DONT take this class. He is ridiculous. 90% of your grades are test and he ask hard questions about what he lectured on, so if you arnt in class you won't pass that part. he is extremely sexist all the time. most of the time I couldn't sit in class cause the things he says and refers to are outrageous.
Come to class and youll pass. Hes very passionate about what hes talking about. Know your terms, lecture handouts, and back of the book questions. He gave 8 points extra credit overtime which helped me go up a letter grade.
Professor Caston is a wonderful teacher. He is very knowledgeable about the subject and puts a lot of effort into his lectures. He'll say attendance isn't mandatory but it is to pass. Just know the vocabulary, pay attention in lectures, and study the back of the book and you'll be fine!
Dr. Caston is literally the best! His lectures are hilarious and interesting and the assignments arent hard at all. 3/4 of the tests are based on the textbook but he uses exact questions from the back of the textbook and gives you a cheat sheet for what to study the class before the test. Pay attention, read and come to class and youll get an A.
