Hilarious and informative drama queen, but does force you to participate.

he made me cry - really unhelpful when I didn't understand a concept
Evil evil man. But I like evil. Very smart, keeps you on your toes
he's crazy but fun.
really interesting ideas, if you can stand the wankiness

Amazing professor! Very intelligent, excellent teacher
He's quite unclear in class. Hard to understand him. His books are odd too.
This horrible evil little man is the worst instructor I've ever had. As a third year science student forced to take this course I didn't like hearing all 'DNA' REALLY means is AND spelled backwards . He is incoherent and worst of all, conceited.
This man is a wretched waste of my time and money. grrr
eccentric.
Everthing this prof. says he has made up. He had our class analyze a travel book for a literature class.
it wasn't just a "travel book." it was coupland for christ's sake. anyhow, prof is... "interesting." get past the annoying voice and mannerisms and you should survive the lectures.
he does weird stuff that a normal eng 110 prof doesnt do.
This guy is full of it. His interpretations are weak, incoherent, and inconclusive.

We had to read a total of 7 novels, poems, and plays for this course. He didn't have time to go in depth with the books. His final consisted of 3 essays in 3 hours, and his TAs were hard markers.
weird books, weird attitude, weird everything. The TA's were absolutely hard markers. Definitely did not enjoy this class at all

Irritated the hell out of me, hated the lectures, hated most of the books. Just not a good class overall.
I learned ABSOLUTELY NOTHING from attending classes. For example if we're reading a book he talks about totally random things, from word origins to weird things we've never even heard of. Choice of books was weird, and a waste of money too (7 books!).
Dr. Cavell is brilliant, certainly one of the best professors at UBC. Be prepared to talk in class and challenge him and you will be rewarded.
Cavell was a BAD TEACHER. His choice of books were pointless, and the tas were extremely hard markers. He makes his whole lectures up and tries to make points that aren't there. I TOTALLY do not suggest you take his course..english 110 anyways.
Made me buy so many books that I can't even resell. His lectures were not helpful at all. He made up stuff to talk about and doesn't even discuss the material in a normal way. The themes he developed are repeated in every book we read. I learned NOTHING.
Worst professor I encountered in my first year. He turned me away from English so much that I decided to change majors. Very condescending and arrogant as hell. Doesn't care about his students and his lectures were repetitive and unhelpful. Stay away!
best english class ive had so far. books were a bit heavy at the time but its good for you. lectures were very unorganized because it was more of a large class discussion.
Disappointing prof. Lecture is made up of notes, reviews and articles from internet, and doesn't give too much insight. His teaching is incoherent, often just following HIS train of thought and not what's important. Even his own TA doesn't understand him.
Richard is arrogant and condescending, and if you are at all shy, easily intimidated or (I suppose) stupid, I would not suggest taking his courses. Nevertheless, he's smart, he will make you think, and he will make you read things that will make you think.
Don't listen to what those idiot 100 level people say, if you want a challenge, have your mind opened, and experience a whole new view of the world, take a class With Dr. C. His conversational style will make you think and make you want to engage with both the class discussion and the text.
Richard is HILARIOUS! He's intelligent and witty- what else can ya ask for? He has a very engaging personality. He has his own unique pronunciation of vocabulary. He makes you want to pay attention and contribute in class. He is not afraid to be challenged on views and will challenge you in return.
Think Monty Burns (Simpsons) on theoretical methampthetamines.
This class is probably the hardest I've ever taken, but Dr. Cavell is a brilliant lecturer, and the material (while difficult) is very interesting. Very rewarding, but don't take it if you've already got a difficult course load.
Sometimes abrupt and rude; comes across as arrogant. Definitely smart, funny and articulate, but seems clueless about race + reluctant to acknowledge realities of social inequality (deconstructs them out of existence).Favors trendy male Continental philosophers. Stickler for spelling and grammar.
A very entertaining lecturer with some interesting perspectives. Loves to debate and discuss. Often quite arrogant, however, and quick to start name-dropping evasively when it looks like he's on shaky ground. Somewhat limited by his post-post-structuralist perspective as well. High standards.
Professor Cavell is a very good teacher. He can be moody and a hard marker, but will let you rewrite your inclass exams until you're happy with your mark. The class wass challenging, but I found it well worth the effort I put in.
Comes off as pompous at first. Very funny, but arrogant. He grows on you. Inteligent, knows what he is talking about. Challenges you and you can challenge him.
Very smart, but arrogant and full of himself sometimes. Funny but sometimes tries to hard to get a laugh. I found him intimidating to talk to outside of lecture.
He is funny and interesting, doesn't seem to care what others think of him, picked some decent/out of the norm books for eng.110 which is a boring requirement for arts so i give him props.
This man is an absolute genius and extremely revered in academic circles internationally. At first it seems like he draws a distinction between himself and his students, intellectually. But he does not. He puts his students in such high-regard. He once said that he's not worried about the future, if minds like the ones he's teaching, will take over
He was the best FDNS102 prof we had. The class was hard enough to teach because of content. He was flambuoyant and engaging. It's true he acted like a drama queen but he wants you to pay attention. Loves Dante. Was surprisingly easy marker for my research paper, I think because he knew how odd the class was. Not a weirdo outside class at all.

He's a good prof I found the class boring but his passion makes you think about stuff. Sometimes he thinks he's funny when he isn't.. but that in itself is funny so its alright.
You won't fall asleep in his class, probably because if he saw you fall asleep he's make fun of you or yell something in your face. Clearly very smart, and interesting for the material we had to work with.
Richard is brilliant and entertaining; beneath his quirky veneer he seems to have a lot of humanity and respect for students. Jamie (TA) is cool and uber laidback. The course itself is more of a Canadian Studies course than a lit course and the readings were patchy. Necessary to have knowledge of & buy into post-structuralism to get a good grade.
He is so incredibly smart, and he makes you think actively about the world around you. I enjoyed going to every single class, and you can never quite see Canada in the same light again. Marked surprisingly easy on the in-class and take home papers. Make sure you listen, because if you miss out on even a little bit, you'll be so lost.
HILARIOUS. One of the most engaging profs I have ever had in my entire undergrad. Was dreading taking CanLit, but what he teaches applies to every facet of human existence. Brilliant. Best Part: his impression of Margaret Atwood (someone you will NEVER study in this class..YES). Did i mention HILARIOUS?! Take his class and you won't regret it.
One of the best courses ever put together and an easy motivation to go to class. As a student and as a Canadian a course with Richard should be mandatory.
I would agree wholeheartedly with another posting already on here: Richard is by far the most engaging prof I've ever had. Jamie (the TA) is fantastic, and the whole course revolves around really interesting theories. His impression of Margaret Atwood is Magnificent, absolutely priceless. Haha, oh my. Never been so impressed.
I took an intro to CanLit course with Cavell 10 years ago at UBC. He was fantastic. Definitely an expert in the subject, and always friendly and open. Definitely inspired me to further my studies in the field. Excellent prof. Other profs should be forced to learn how to lecture from him.
I took this course just to fulfil my English requirement. I thought it was going to be boring as heck. I mean" Canadian Literature" what the heck is that anyway? Margaret Atwood?Well let me tell you that it is one of the best classes you will take on your undergrad. He relates the concepts into real live scenarios, which makes it very interesting.
Richie is a HOOT! The most cultured, theatrical & outgoing prof you will encounter. His lectures are a complete spectacle & he is surprisingly a very generous marker. The only issue is his CanLit course is very interdisciplinary ( = tough): a TON of theory, not so much lit. Do not take if you don't want mostly poli sci, psych, history readings.
I have no idea how anyone could not enjoy a class with Richard. He is hilarious and brilliant. Interesting and a very fair marker.
I came into this course with nothing but A's in past English courses. I think I failed this one. Very theatrical and flamboyant, and the material he presented was intriguing; I wanted to like the course and him so much but I think you need prior knowledge of Canadian history and politics as the themes are quite political. Poli Sci is recommended.
A lively & provocative lecturer. He's highly opinionated on many issues (and lets you know it!) but welcomes feedback. Not a fussy marker if your ideas are sound. My main beef: he leans heavily on Lit Theory jargon without demystifying it very well. Better brush up on your own time. Overall, a challenging course, but to me it was worth the effort.
One of UBC's best. Challenges you and introduces concepts you can carry with you outside of class into the real world. Hysterically funny, always well dressed, knows his stuff and teaches like a dream. He makes Shakespeare fascinating and examines it in a new and exciting way. Adore him.
Richard is an entertaining lecturer and I actually liked him a lot, but the books were fairly boring and the concepts and terms he used were really confusing and hard to grasp. He has a PhD in Philosophy, which makes for a lot of "heady" stuff that went totally over my head.
He is a major jerk. Screamed at a student for not listening. Horrible professor.
One of the easiest markers I've ever had. If you want tot boost your GPA - he's your man. Note that he is VERY liberal, left wing so if you have conservative views , it will be a tough gig.
Dr. Cavell is extremely smart and an amazing lecturer. He is probably the most cultured prof you will ever meet. He seems pompous at first but that's just his style. We analyzed literature using media theory, which was a fresh and interesting approach. I feel like I gained more from his class than just the literature he taught. Just amazing.
Awesome Prof, very interesting class but unclear on expectations be prepared for rough grades. First D of my life...
He's is very clear about what he wants you to get out of the course, very enthusiastic about the articles and his argument, and he loves to interact with students. He tells you what is going to be on the quizzes and tests. So its not too hard to get a good grade in this class. Just don't skip classes.
An amazing lecturer but I'm amazed at the people saying "easy A". I'm an ENGL major & have never studied so hard and simultaneously done so poorly. He'll take off a % of your final grade on a mere word preference in his heavily weighted quizzes, & you have no way of knowing how well you'll do even if you know all the material. Really unpredictable.
Richard Cavell is a fantastic lecturer and he is clearly brilliant, but he does not care for the success of his students. He looks at students as if they are student numbers, not humans. His tests are philosophical and unrealistically difficult. He is a funny, charismatic person but he is unapproachable and condescending.
I'm an English Honours student and I found Professor Cavell to be the toughest professor I've ever had. Theoretically, his class should not be too difficult- students make quiz questions and questions are given ahead of time, etc. But the quizzes are heavily weighed and he looks for specific answers, which is different from other English classes.
Not exactly evil, but his quizzes were unreasonably difficult and counted a lot. I think the class average was 60%.
Honestly, I'm a bit surprised at the negative feedback Cavell's gotten for this class. I thought it was pretty dope all things considered. He's a funny dude and I think as long as you take his arguments and the readings seriously (even if you don't agree) you'll be fine with the quizzes. The average wasn't high but it wasn't 60 either.
I am an English major and this is the worst mark I have ever received at UBC. I agree with the majority of the feedback below, while theoretically the course sounds like it would be easy to ace, Professor Cavell would remove marks at a whim due to word choice preference. The effort put into the course does not reflect the mark that is returned.
Cavell is funny, smart and passionate so lectures are fun. Super hard, PICKIEST, nuanced marker. Never studied so hard for English before. Still managed to finish with a decent mark above average. He's hard but quite clear in what he wants, so raters saying the marks don't reflect the work aren't being totally honest. Also doesn't take attendance.
I personally found Cavell to be tough and obscure about what he's expecting. Would not recommend.
I personally found Cavell to be tough and obscure about what he's expecting. Would not recommend. Worst prof I ever had.
The most low-stress uni course I've ever taken. The content of the course is incredibly unique and really changed the way I think about literature. Readings are tough but he explains everything in class. There are no papers! And he gives you quiz and final exam questions in advance so if you understand how he wants you to answer it's an easy A!
Awesome and inspirational lectures. This man really knows his stuff. However it feels as though the TA's are looking for his exact opinions and perspective in your paper, so basically feels like your just regurgitating what he says into your own words. Overall, he's hilarious and offers a new perspective.
The lectures were a little bit boring and it was hard to follow along but, the professor was really nice and well dressed. He came across as really smart and was opinionated on many matters, he was funny and he taught topics which were interesting and significant yet hard to grasp. My TA was not the best all the papers were marked by TA!
Walked into the class with zero knowledge of Canadian literature. Walked out learning a lot. A lot of class discussion, and panels were extremely helpful.
I found Professor Cavell to be a kind, caring, fair prof. He marks fairly, and his lectures are hilarious! He is very charismatic and approachable.
Richard was a very tough grader, and for a course with only three-ish assignments that was rather difficult, but it was important for every assignment to be of strong quality.
Gives free re-exams, makes sure everyone does well.
Cavell's lectures are very engaging. There was no final paper (suprisingly for an english class) but a final exam that consisted of only a few short paragraph questions. Mind you, he isn't an laid-back marker. You will have to work hard and keep up with readings for a good grade.
Have taken two classes so far with this professor and will definitely be taking more. Hilarious, full of energy, never has a bad day, and explains the readings so thoroughly and clearly that i've received high A's without doing any of the readings. He truly cares about what he is teaching, and makes an effort to get to know students. A genius.
Hilarious and engaging. Gave very clear grading expectations and extremely easy-to-follow guidelines for tests and exams, making studying for them a very efficient process. He was also super helpful outside of class and was very receptive to students wanting to continue onto graduate school. Highly recommend- my highest grade at UBC!
TRULY one of - if not the- most intelligent people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I am so thankful to be apart of his Media Studies program at UBC and am so grateful I got to be taught by him! ENGL 232 Approaches to Media Studies was the most interesting non-art class I've taken. Also- he's hilarious and lively and so fun to talk to. LOVE
this is the worst professor I have ever met in my entire university life. He teaches media studies (stuffs about remediation, Mc Luhan etc.) then he grades solely based on English Grammar. He basically deducted 3/5 of my point for English Grammar(nothing serious; things like articles a/the) and clearly admitted that I did get all the ideas right.
Unfair, boring, doesn't care about if you learn, attendance is only mandatory for discussions and thats only because its 10% of your grading and even if you show up to lectures people just fall asleep and he does nothing about it to grab peoples attention. His best interest isn't for you to learn. The grading in the course is terrible also.
Lectures were extremely boring and seemed to have absolutely nothing to do with the books we were reading. There was no point to showing up, nobody payed attention and nothing he talked about was testable. Pretty funny, although he often talked about the dangers of the "all seeing" eye of the internet when he is too afraid to use facebook.
For all of the students in Science that need to meet their communication requirement, take Dr Cavell's English 110 class. The books you read are not long (some are mostly pictures) and there is MUCH less work compared to other English 110 sections. Pay attention to what he says in class so you can use it in your essays.
Took this class a long while back, really thought it would be boring, but Dr .Cavell somehow made the books seem interesting in class and sparked a lot of discussions, very helpful if you ask about how you can improve your writing. Also wonderful to talk to! I still remember the medium is the massage.
I think Dr. Cavell is a great prof but I wouldn't recommend him for first years. The first few lectures I was so confused I couldn't even understand what we were talking about or what was important and what was just "side stories." He is supper funny and helpful but this class is defiantly not what I was expecting.(The themes were confusing for me)
Cavell is brilliant. He helped me discover my passion in media theory and I always looked forward to his class (if only they were in person!). Not many assignments/quizzes, but make sure you have a good grasp on the language, because he does mark on grammar. Overall, one of the best courses I've ever taken, and I'm not to typically enjoy English.
Was super excited about this course but prof didn't have a clear grading criterion. There was no rubric or any communication on what he was grading you on, so work was hard to write. You could have great ideas but if your grammar was off, you'd get a low grade. You were only graded on small assignments so there was little room for expression.
Ok so his lectures are fun and engaging and he is very quotable but if you don't have every single thing he says in your notes you might not pass the test. I got the worst mark ever on the midterm "test" because 1. my grammar wasn't great (but we only had 40 mins cmon!) and 2. I didn't phrase things like he wanted. MAKE SURE YOU TAKE NOTES.
Loved the class, he was so entertaining to watch but I wasn't a fan of his vendetta against all things internet. There were only like ~3 papers and they weren't difficult at all, so all in all, good class!
I took Richard Cavell for my first class ever at ubc, english 333, history of the book. He brought in artifacts and replicas for us to look at and was super engaged in what he was teaching and he has great stories to tell. He was a fantastic way to start my time at UBC
Richard Cavell is a very outgoing professor and is quite a character during his lectures. The course itself isn't too challenging, your lectures are him going over powerpoint slides. Focus on making notes on the slides, less on what he says. Quizzes are open everything and the most important part is understanding the material and time management.
Makes classes entertaining even when the material isn't. Only 3 big "quizzes" but easy to do well as it's open book and clear questions. Takes marks off for grammar mistakes but understandable as it is an English class. Would definitely recommend!
Great Professor! The lecture was so fun and there is no work (assignment/paper) to do, only 4 tests
really interesting material but a shame there is no room for debate or expression of these ideas in our own interpretations/applications.
dr. cavell is one of the best profs I've met in the English department. cares very much about the process of learning and less about grades. two open book tests and one group presentation. very funny, occasionally screams and jumps around during lectures. has a clear passion for what he's teaching and loves it when students show interest! love!
Professor Cavell has been THE fundamental professor throughout my university career. As the Media Studies founder, he instills his students with knowledge and confidence. He listens to our concerns, and he incorporates our ideas into his learning material. Asking this man for a grad school reference! Our year has so much love for Professor Cavell.
You have to listen and take notes in Professor Cavell's class. He goes at a quick pace but all his lectures are very interesting and insightful. He always makes sure to review things if you have questions and often repeats the important things. All quizzes are open-note, but make sure you have a firm understanding of the material to prepare.
Hilarious professor, clearly passionate about what he teaches. 3 essays total and the prompts were straightforward, even the final exam themes were discussed in lectures. Just read his slides and you'll do well. The marking of the essays is up to the TAs, so can't really comment much about his control over grades.
Clearly passionate about the material. The content grew on me throughout the term, ended up finding it fairly interesting. I found the lectures varied, sometimes quite interesting, but sometimes pretty dry. Attendance was "mandatory" in that once every few lectures he'd take attendance. Not a terrible way to get my second communications credit.
Richard is passionate about media theory at the start, but as the course went on, he started reading ppts. He doesn't control how your essays are graded so talk with TAs to see what they like. All Richard is there for is introduce major themes and discuss the books with us, so a lot of self interpretation is needed here to build your own arguments.
While professor Cavell is clearly passionate about what he is teaching, he get really into his lectures and often finds himself in an unnecessary tangent rather then further explaining his slides. The TAs are responsible for grading so it depends on who you get. Readings are complex and philosophical but not impossible to figure out.
I was dreading taking this course to fulfill requirements, but ended up enjoying it and finding the concepts relevant to my CS degree. Dr. Cavell cares about making students think critically about the world. He has a lot of personality and says some funny things. Sometimes he just reads off his slides. Grades are pretty TA-determined.
Some issues I find with the course however are the fact that the TA's are solely responsible for grading work. It was mentioned to us that A's will not be given for essays unless it surpasses and exceeds the TA's expectations. Granted it is an 1st year English Course to tell students A's are almost not achievable is discouraging.
Dr. Cavell is the coolest. Grading is done by the TAs and Cavell just comes in and delivers legendary lectures. There were a lot of books for the course but all of them were genuinely enjoyable. Lectures just go deeper into the meanings and connections within the readings and they are HILARIOUS. I love this man.
Cavell is incredibly passionate and often funny, which makes lectures engaging. However, the material is very dense, and he sometimes assumes students grasp it as easily as he does. The grading is heavy: 25% and 35% closed-book quizzes, and a 40% group project—little space for individual feedback or smaller assignments.
Dr. Cavell is incredibly funny, knowledgeable, and accommodating. Assignments are few and very reasonable. Readings are interesting, and lectures are theatrical and engaging.
Love him! He's very entertaining. No reading, and the two tests were based on the PowerPoint slides, so the coursework is easy. The other part of the grade was a 7-member panel presentation with few guidelines on the topic. They give very good grades. Definitely recommend. Both the easiest and highest mark I've ever gotten.
An insanely interesting intellect & animated figure, creative and a wonder to study under.
Absolutely LOVED Cavell's lectures. This course discussed a completely different approach to the world than I've ever seen, and it was always engaging. Cavell is clearly passionate and extremely engaging as a lecturer. Readings were sometimes dense but interesting, quizzes were very straightforward, and group project was fun!
I don't know why Dr. Cavell's rating is so low!! He's by far one of the best profs I've ever had at UBC. He's so kind and caring about his students and always accepts any and all directions of analyses. No essays or papers. If you put in the work he is not a tough grader and really allows you to grow and shine in his class.
I took this course two years ago and still think about how underwhelming this prof was. Was passive-aggressive to students and would assign whole books to be finished in one week. Easy to fall behind and would leave grading to TAs. Barely anyone got an A, which is shocking for a 100-level class. Go with another prof for your credit requirements!!!
No structure to the way he teaches. Goes off topic a lot and his teachings don't make sense. Have to learn everything on your own. He is very sassy towards students. He tends to have a bit of an ego.
