Dr. Compean prepares you very well and knows his material very well. I took him in English 94 and English 96. I plan on taking him to the highest level. Anyone can come talk to Dr. Compean during his office hours, he will help you with any subject or essay. He is the best English professor at CCSF.

Class is based on a 100 point scale. Quizzes are worth 10, midterm 5, presentation 5, class participation 10, 6 essays worth 10 each, and final 10. Very easy on grading essays if you explain and analyze your thesis clearly. Presentation is based on any story, poem you read, can choose. This class made english more fun. Highly recommended!

With 6 weeks of instruction, writing and reading was a definate must to pass and keep up with the fast paced instruction. The class was focused on short stories, poems, drama, and one novel. However I would have liked to read pieces that shared a theme. Dr. Compean was extremely insightful but failed to highlight what a great essay consists of.

Minimal reading for an english class. Super nice and easy going guy. He's there to help you out and gives extension for papers. Just keep up the reading, ace the easy 10 question quizes and do the essays you'll do fine in the class. Would definately recommend him.

An extremely easy class if NOT taken during the summer. In the summer, you are stuck with quizzes every other day, at least an essay a week, and midterms and a final. He grades his essays more on content than grammar. He will provide the tests questions before hand. Great teacher and explains the confusing material very well. Highly recommended.

Mr. Compean is a great teacher. He is very lenient and helpful. He likes humor and makes jokes frequently, but not too much to digress from the class. The class is 10% class participation/presentation, 10% quizzes (12 quizzes), 60% essays (6 essays, 5 in summer), 10% homework (3 summaries), 10% final(in-class essay, you can use notes).

Generally I dislike English classes due to readings, but Compean is the best Eng teacher I had. Probably w/ combination of a dynamic class, made it so interesting, every class an enjoyable experience. Definitely not easy, but grading is fair. Those who said he's boring (like all other "boring teachers") must have never talked to him b4. Great guy.

Mr. Compean is a great Prfessor. If you want an English 1A Professor, then make sure to take him.

I hate English. Compean was a great teacher. Great attitude and very approachable. He made English fun. Great stories he chose to read. A million times better than my English 96 teacher.

Although some may disagree, Compean is a great professor. His course is easy to pass, but hard to ace. If you are having problems, he will work with you so long an he can see your effort. Those who have bad things to say about him also tend to have very poor grammer, placing little effort into their writing.

At first I didn't understand his teaching but when time passes every lesson he gave are stuck in my head. I have learnt more than just writing a simple essay, I have learned to give it life. Thanks Dr. Compean!

I've had Compean for English 93,96 & 1A. That man has not failed to teach every single time. He's one of the greatest English teachers. The class is easy to pass, but it takes effort to get an A. Quizzes every week(open note). He's really nice,very approachable,and always willing to help. Writing will improve. Thanks for everything Dr.Compean!

Weekly quizzes (they're open note). He's a really cool guy. Takes work to get an A, but the class is easy to pass. You learn a lot. Not much work assigned, and the essays aren't graded too harshly. He grades on content and grammar. Just do your work, and you'll be fine. COMPEAN IS AWESOME

He is a helpful teacher and a fair grader. His teaching helped improve my writing. I enjoyed his class in the summer altho it was intense. He is always pleasant and loves baseball.

I took Dr. Compean in the summer. He is very helpful. He wants students to pass. We had quizzes every MWF about the articles/ chapters we were assigned to read. Interesting books. Intense class. Take him if you want to improve your writing skills. Two thumbs up :)

Professor Compean is awesome! I took his course in the summer. Though it was very fast paced, I really enjoyed the readings we had & the essay topics were interesting too. We had quizzes every other day on the assigned readings and we got to use our notes. I really liked his class & I felt like I learned a lot about life itself from the readings =]

Hes an easy teacher if you have good grammar and syntax skills. Otherwise dont bother with his class. He is also very boring and give vague topics of essays. Uses the time of the class to do presentations.

Eng 1A+ 1B - Loved the class. Quality over quantity! The class is not difficult to pass, but to get an A you have to work for it. If you're not good at english you'll learn a lot. If you're already good, then you'll find his class boring. His topics are broad- so it can be good or bad, depending how you look at it. Weekly quizzes. Open note.

Took Eng 1C in the summer. Great professor. Understand student's difficulties. helpful. Allow one revise essay for average grade. Postpone essays. Gives chances. There are quizzes every other day though. I thought I wasn't going to pass the class, but I got a C. Learned a lot. Thank you Dr. Compean!

I took his 96 and 1A classes. .My writing skill is improved a lot since taking his classes. English is my second language, however, I usually got B's in his classes. He is very nice, helpful,and fair grader. Totally love his class and learn a lot from him. Thanks Prof. Compean!

Professor Compean is a very good english teacher. He is very forgiving, he will give people a lot of second chances if assignments are late. He is a very down to earth guy. He gives the entire semester's day by day schedule in the syllabus which is nice. We had to write 6 essays total. One warning- he is very strict about grammar in essays.

I can say I'm learning a LOT from this professor... :) Way clearer than my Eng 93 and 96 teachers combined and the books we're reading are quite interesting.

He's really nice when it comes to papers. Starts off with a C and you can either go up or down from there. First class ever to get an A on my essay! Overall got a B. Gives you one late pass. No final. 5 papers. Lots of small articles/stories to read. Quizzes per week which is easy because he lets you take notes. Write a good argument! great teacher

Professor Compean is a very nice and easy-going person and always willing to help students. although his lecture is some kind of boring, he always tries his best to help his students pass his class. He gave me lots of ideas about how to write the essay when I went to his office hour

Mr. compean is old school teacher, he is very helful with the papers but as other mention he is extermly picky on grammer. However, I took Eng 1A it requires good writing skills. If you are good with grammer you will get an easy B otherwise hardly C. He is still better than other professor in city for Eng 1A.

He is a very nice old school teacher. His method is easy to follow(he has the whole semester detailed in the syllabus) and If you do will be successful. I am an international student and he was my first teacher. Took ENG96 & 1A with him. He is picky with grammar and I learnt a lot. He accept late essay, gave extra points, easy to talk.Very helpful!

Dr. Compean is an amazing professor. I have taken many professors for English, and by far he is my favorite! I took him for 1B and his quizzes were easy and I wrote about 5 essays throughout the semester. He's reasonable with his grading and he's funny and helpful to! I wish I took him a long time ago.

I never wrote a review for anything before and I think Dr. Compean deserves it! He is really nice and I learned a lot in his class. I learned to love English again after taking his class. I was afraid he wouldn't add me because I was one of those students who didn't register on time but he managed to add 11 of us. Helpful nice and funny man!

Professor Compean is an excellent English teacher! Through his class, I have learned a lot about critical analysis of the readings and about the methods used to do so. Papers that show critical thinking and understanding of essay structure on a paragraph to sentence level will receive high grades. Allows 1 late pass and 1 rewrite. Take his class!

Professor Compean is a cery nice teacher. The assigned books are very interesting. He uses a calendar in his syllabus which has every class meeting in details. Homework and quizzes are listed on the syllabus. He is very clear about what he wants in the essays. Its not easy A but the best teacher I have had at CCSF.

I took Dr. Compean for summer and was it tough? He definitely is a tough grader and if you have other obligations, YEAH he doesn't want to hear it, but he IS understanding. PROOF-READ PROOF-READ PROOF-READ!! NO JOKE!! He makes these awesome playing cards to help write a great essay. I'm definitely using them for my next English classes.

Super understanding and helpful. You do have to ask questions and come to him if you are having issues. He is very willing to help and does what he can to help you succeed. Tests and papers are easy if you do assigned readings. Deck of cards help a lot. One rewrite! No final only final essay! Interesting/good reading assigned. Great teacher!

I took Prof. Compean for 96 and 1A . Great instructor!! Interesting materials and book choices. He tells stories here & there which are informative and entertaining. There is a quiz every week from the readings assigned the week prior. I totally recommend him!!!

I took his pop culture hybrid class. He's a tough grader as far as his essays, we had quizzes every week, but an interesting class. He's clear with what he looks for in the essays and offers great feedback on how to improve your writing. DON'T SKIP CLASS otherwise you'll fall so far behind. Do the work & you'll get a good grade! Mr. Compean is a very good, nice, and helpful English teacher, and he has clear grading criteria in essay. He cares and loves his students. As an immigrant, I felt very interesting since I studied English 96 in his class; I improved my reading and writing a lot, and I got A for my English 1B in his class.

Loved class, amazing professor! I took the pop culture class which was fun & interesting. There are 3 sections: music, movies & tv shows. For each section you write one in class essay, one at home essay, and in class metacognitive essay. 3 books & handouts that are required reading with weekly quizzes which are open book.

Dr. Compean is a really laid back and friendly professor. There is a LOT of reading, but he really knows you what he is looking for, and how he grades. My biggest complaints are my fellow students who think they know more than somebody with a PhD in English. Read the book, do the work, and listen to the feedback for a solid grade and good time.

He isn't the hardest grader, but he will tear you up if you don't try. His class really hits hard on the basics, which for me was nice. I also like how he was a bit more concise in regards to assignments and teaching. More so than the average English teacher. The man also cares about his students. Strongly recommend.

Prof Compean is absolutely one of the best english professors I've had! I took Eng96/1A with him and loved his teaching style so I decided to take him again for Eng1B. There were about 4-5 essays and he's really picky on grammar. He gives you a chance to rewrite your lowest scored essay. He has a great sense of humor and often makes witty remarks.

Read all of the assignments(readings) and youll be able to do all the homework easily. Showing up is key. And proofread proofread proofread.

Dr. Compean was one of the best English professors I've had. He can get a little tough with grading your papers. My best advice would be to keep your paragraphs short and to the point. Dr. C's essays are based on movies which you will be viewing in class and are semi modern as well. Do the readings, show improvement, and you'll pass.

Your grade is 70% based on 5 papers assigned during the semester and 30% basically free points. He explains his criteria for a strong essay over the course of the class, only quirk is that he prefers shorter paragraphs. Essay grading is tough but fair, just follow his guidelines for good writing. He tries to make it the class relevant to your life.

Took him for 1A and 1B. He's a tough but fair grader. You will be reading quite a bit and will view alot of film at the same time. If you want things easy don't take him but if you want a challenge and to better yourself in English he's the one for you.

Very nice teacher. You don't do much in class; all we did was do easy pop quizzes and worksheets based on the book which were peer-graded and turned in for an easy A. The rest of your grade depends on the papers which in my opinion were not that hard. These papers were based on relating the films we watch in class to the book. Overall easy class.

He is a good professor. He turns the essays on time and good feedback. Attendance is a must. A good amount of reading and analytical essays. Quizzes every week. Essays based on movies.

This professor is very helpful he will give you the extensions you need and be very understanding. He gives you 5 essays you need to do and is a fair grader. There are quizzes every week until you guys finish the books. Also anytime you need to talk to him he will respond within a reasonable time and he has zoom meetings once a week.

Grade is based mainly on the essays. He is very strict on grammar and syntax, but he works with you to get better. We had like 5 essays the whole semester, but no tests only a few quizzes (nothing that hurts your grade). You will need to read to write the essays, but most of them were short stories aside from Where the Crawdads Sing (amazing book).

Overall, prof Compean is a good teacher and keeps his syllabus in relative order, unlike many other teachers. His biggest shortcoming is his dubious literary taste. Where the Crawdads Sing is a terrible book made up of cliches and cardboard characters. It was painful to read. Otherwise, he is pretty fair in grading. He also gives extra credit.

a very good english professor. graded fairly and forgivingly. a lot of the classwork was gone over in class as well. the only thing that i didn't like was how often religion was brought up.

I highly recommend him for English 1A! He assigns extremely long essays based on movies, but you will do well if you invest a lot of time into his class. I took his 4-hour night class once a week and he managed to keep us engaged during those hours (he usually cuts class an hour shorter)

Graded honestly, not too harsh. I felt like I actually learned things to improve my writing. If I had one criticism it's that the essay prompts and topics felt a little too limited for my taste. That may just be the nature of the class itself, as an introductory composition, so don't really hold it against him. Funny and interesting guy.

Professor Compean runs a structured class with lots of essay writing. Stay engaged, follow his guidelines, and use resources like unstuckstudy to excel. The workload is manageable if you put in the effort. Overall, a solid English 1A experience.

He won't use canvas for anything other than turning the essays in. Weekly quizzes based on the reading of the textbook chapters, which was actually fun as we read the chapter in class. He is old school but the class is fun and he gives good feedback to improve your writing. Great professor!

He's an older man who takes no nonsense. He's a hard grader, but he gives great feedback. Lectures can be slow, yet you often get out early. If you listen to the feedback, you'll be fine, he's the only reason I'm so good at writing now. However, he isn't much for tech! Yee hath been warned! If class is canceled, you'll find a note on the door.

He is an excellent English teacher. I love the applications of his 52 deck of cards because they're useful. Quizzes are open notes and books. Essays on movies show in class and watch them on your own are turned in on Canvas instead. He is helpful and student friendly because he wants you to succeed. I got an A in the class and would take him again.

Prof. Compean is a very wise man with lots to teach and is extremely passionate about his literature. I enjoyed his class very much and the plays we studied. He is a tough grader, but will make you look within and become a better writer, and make you pay attention to detail on the papers you turn in. He also offered to help with University essays.
