TOO MANY BOOKS TO READ!!! He always gives too many books to read, Green at least doesnt give you as many books, but he spends more time and detail on them and even lets us watch movies. His class is getting repetative, thats the problem. Its always the same subjects and it becomes routine. Sometimes I can afford to not read a couple of his book.
He's the Best!!!!and he's Brilliant!!!!
Some have stated they don't care for him, BUT I LOVE HIS CLASS!!! He lets you speak your mind and holds intelligent conversations. He's understanding and interested in world/current events. I'll miss this class!!! :D And, the assignments were "do-able." Some claim they're too hard to understand what he wants - NOT TRUE!!! I did fine! So there!
My favorite professor at FGCU. He is tough, but you leave his class confident and smarter than when you went in. He's passionate about Political Science, and is very exciting to listen to when he relates the things we learn to current problems. Take at least one class with him, you won't regret it.
Our culture and society class was turned into a full on political science course focused on US foreign policy. We had TONS of very lengthy readings and discussion is expected. When my class wasn't participating, he added to our take-home essay exam by adding an in class portion as well. I learned a lot but he is extremely liberal and anti Bush adm.
I would not take him again. ever.
What a great professor!! He's the best political science professor this school has. I've taken seven classes with him!!! He's the man!
This guy is a genius and a great teacher. Although he is a super-liberal (I am republican) I still greatly enjoy his classes! He is a super-helpful teacher. I gaurantee you every person here rating him poorly is because they are lazy and expected an O'Brien class.
Professor Coughlin is a really good professor. His lectures are unique and stimulating, and he really makes the material important and interesting to his students. His class was engaging and required alot of thought and hard work. However, I feel like I really learned alot from him and his class. Thanks professor Coughlin!
this is not one of those easy teachers to get an easy A, must work hard to get a good grade.all his classes require alot of lenghtly reading but you learn alot and most classes are discussion so everyone can get in their opinion. He knows what his talking about. his test are hard and he grades fairly, in lower level classes he does cruve the test
Oh my god. This is the most boring class ever. Dont take it.
Took Environmental Policymaking with him and will say that the class was very difficult but, highly interesting. The texts are informative but, lengthy and his class simulation is a lot bigger of a challenge then anticipated. He's a great guy and grades fairly. Be ready to work and learn.
WORSE TEACHER EVER ...DO NOT TAKE HIM ..TOO MUCH WORK FOR NOTHING..NOT EVEN A SINGLE EFFORT TO HELP YOU ..TAKE SOMEBODY ELSE ..
Very demanding teacher, but very knowledgeable. Knows what he's talking about but is very very writing intensive. You will be challenged but will learn a lot.
He's a great teacher but he doesnt give out easy A's.His lectures are interesting/he doesnt make it boring, but they are long. There are class discussions/assignments.Most of his grades are based on the exams.I recommend him b/c he knows what he is talking about and you learn a lot, but it is NOT an easy class, you really have to work for your grades
Dr. Coughlin is an AMAZING teacher. Anyone who doesn't get an A either skipped classes or didn't do the reading. Very interesting and grades FAIRLY
He grades extremely fairly and really has a passion for the subject. I have learned more in his classes than in any other political science classes I have taken. It is a lot of reading, but it is very well worth it when you take the time and do the reading.
Yes, the man is a genius. I wished I had a 1/4 of his brain power. Attendance is extremely important. He can be over wehlming but hang in there because it will eventually all click. You will work hard and a lot but you will learn a lot. He is very friendly. Class participation is important to him. get your feet wet with other poli sci courses first
Have some poli sci classes under your belt before you jump in with him. he can be overwhelming. He is a genius in his field. you will work for your grade but it is worth it. He is friendly and passionate about his subjects. Class participation is very important. He don't play games. I recommend him if you want to be challenged. Stimulating classes.
Coughlin is kinda hot in a weird way. He is super smart and will help you with anything. If you show up and participate by adding some credible comments, you will pass with flying colors. Easy A unless you're a complete moron...just skim the reading, jot down 2 or 3 quotes, and throw them out during class- always worked for me...
genious professor that has passion for the topic but is a very strict grader and expects the most out of everyone. tough class but i learned alot
Passionate professor who challenges conventional wisdom, very liberal but doesn't care where you stand in the political spectrum as long as you can make rational arguments, was a tough grader but he seems to have mellowed out a lot. Demands respect, such as not texting or going on Facebook during class.
I have had six courses with Dr. Coughlin, and the man is a genius! He is probably the hardest Political Science teacher, but he is also the best. His class is thought-provoking and challenging, and he is very helpful!
This man is a super-genius. I took two courses with him and was always impressed with the depth of his knowledge and his understanding of so many topics. The subject material itself is rather difficult, but Dr. Coughlin is so intelligent that he can make it very easy to understand.
Professor Coughlin is a great professor. His class, like most classes, is not difficult if you do the reading. I took him for several classes while an undergraduate PoliSci major. He loves to hear different points of view and truly is neutral when it comes to grading. Not sure why people say he is a tough grade, I got 100s in his classes =)
I would rather watch C-SPAN all day long than listen to his incoherent liberal musings. I am not in college to hear how you despise the conservative movement. Also, future students,do not expect much feedback on term papers. I received a two sentence response to a 12 page paper. Typical college liberal professor.
If youre not interested in politics DO NOT take this class. i took it for an easy elective and it was the worst decision. all he does is ramble and lecture, there is almost no student interaction during his lectures,he overreacts about phones and talking ,its more distracting when he calls students out rather than them actually talking or texting.
This class can be super easy even if you have no interest in politics. The tests are given to you ahead of time, study the questions from the online quizzes and you will get 100% on the multiple choice, and just plan an answer for the essay question which he gives you ahead of time. The class itself is incredibly boring but he is a cool guy
Dr. Coughlin is incredibly knowledgeable, but his classes are incredibly dull. The textbook used in this class is very dense, but he generally does a poor job elaborating so I can understand. It is very easy to lose focus in his class, but he is a very fair grader, and it is not hard to pass his classes.
Favorite teacher I've had while at FGCU. Astoundingly knowledgeable and intelligent. A few quick witted political jokes here and there, I loved it. Attendance is mandatory, mostly lecture with questions for the class. Essay exams, and term papers, very willing to help with the term papers. Attend class, read, and do the work and you'll get an A.
Rude and very messy with lectures.
He is smart so he knows if you wrote it at 3am the morning b4 it was due. Don't use ur cell in class - u shouldnt anyway - he WILL call you out. Go to his office or send him an email if u are struggling. He is very helpful. Do the reading or u will get too far behind for the tests.
He walked the class through the MLA process, he made it easy
Online Course: HARD! Before every quiz and test I read the book, power points, watched the videos, and did everything to get a good grade, but the test and quizzes were confusing and the multiple choice questions had more than one answer and he did nothing about it when I emailed him and backed up my position. Very Frustrating! Would not recommend.
He is extremely rude to students and always in a bad mood. His voice is like nails on a chalkboard and he always looks lost and messy, very distracting. Reluctant to answer any question and responds to emails with one line, look at the syllabus. The syllabus is not clear and unorganized. Has only one day of office hours or by phone call appt.
Professor Coughlin is a nice guy and is very smart. But this class was the worst decision I ever made! Unless your super into war and politics do not take this class! His notes are extremely unorganized and are not helpful on test. Only 3 tests but I found them very hard. Lectures were long and boring with hardly any discussion. Don't recommend!
Overall, he is a great professor that is obviously very knowledgeable in his field. The only place that I find he comes up a bit short is when assigning homework, it's not hard by any means, especially if you know certain tricks for reading a ton of material quickly. That said, I'm a procrastinator. If you're fine with reading then go for him.
The class itself was easy enough, do the readings and show up to class and you'll be prepared for all the assignments. Lectures themselves sucked because of his reliance on group discussion rather than having actual lectures. Read, or at least look like you did, because participation was mandatory. Just a very tedious/boring class with this prof.
Never try to text or be on your phone in class, thats a pet peeve of his. I would recommend taking notes on a computer because he covers a lot of topics with out writing anything on the board and I thought it was easier to type. Also his voice is surprisingly soft, I wasn't prepared for that.
I was put into his Honors Peace & Conflict class as a freshman. But I had previous experience w/ research and incredibly long papers. He assigns reading each night & it's a three day a week class. All of his lectures are relevant and you need to contribute to discussion otherwise he gets angsty and calls you the wrong name. I really enjoy his class
This is probably one of the worst professors I have ever had. He is very rude and you will learn nothing. He lectured every class and expects you to take notes but he goes off on tangents and his handwriting it very hard to understand. Attendan is extremely mandatory and if you do not go to class your attendance grade will greatly affect your grade
He doesn't give any exams throughout the course. There are only three papers that are counted for exams. Pretty easy if you pay attention to the lectures. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY.
Discussion boards every week relevant to class and readings; READ, participate, attend, pay attention to terms he uses and references from the readings, write them down. Use those concepts he references from the books in your 10 pages 2 questions midterm and final essay exams. He's incredibly intelligent and entertaining to listen to. OFFICE HOURS!
Coughlin is an incredibly knowledgeable and passionate professor in the Political Science major. There are weekly discussion posts, but the big grades of the semester lie in the midterm and final essays. Getting an A in his class is not easy, but he really makes sure that you actually learn something from his class regardless.
Extremely opinionated. His handwriting is scattered across the whiteboard and is impossible to read. If he sees you check the time on your phone he'll scream at you which accomplishes nothing.
There was an optional 15 page paper due at the end that you had to write to get an A. I did not write it so I ended with an 89. The class was not difficult but writing is a main point. I got an A on every assignment including midterm and final 6 pg essay exams. If you are not good at writing this class will be very difficult.
Professor struggles with organization and the utilization of canvas. Does not provide clear grading rubrics or paper criteria for his assignments. When you get grades back you are left guessing as to why you didnt get a higher grade even if he gave no negative feedback. His phone policy is outrageous... this is the 21st Century.
I have never in my life written a review on a Professor, however, this is by far necessary. If you do NOT have to take this professor DON'T. He is completely disorganized sets up exams that are due within 48 hours of him posting it. His syllabus doesn't include any assignments, discussions or exams that will be due just what has to be read
Dr. Coughlin is extremely unorganized and rude. My friend and I took him and both ended with B+ even though both of our 89's were between 89.7-89.9. Even after an email he wouldn't round the grades up. There is no clear rubric for assignments. If things aren't answered the way he wants then expect a low grade regardless of evidence or effort.
Dr. Coughlin was very knowledgeable in his field. Very pushy about his personal political agenda and would often go on rants about different conflicts rather than explain what occurred with no bias. Very tough grader when it came to anything written, but if you go to his office hours he will typically give you extra points. Wouldn't take again.
His discussions in class are based on the readings, so definitely read. He has weekly discussion posts. It was just a mid term and a final, which were not too bad, you just have to had read. He does not curve anything below a .5 percent. The research paper is optional but if you dont do it you won't get an A in his class. Attendance counts.
Taking this Fall of my junior year. The professor often rambles off topic. As well as not doing a good job of explaining the lectures. The only learning you will do in this class is reading on your own. I would not recommend taking this professor. If you ask a question he will not answer it but instead move even faster in the class.
I do not recommend his classes at all. He is extremely difficult to get a straight answer out of. He grades really harshly and doesn't leave any feedback. It will always be his way or the highway. He goes off on unrelated tangents in lectures. He teaches you as if you know a ton of the vocabulary related to the class even though you never took it.
Hes a very hard grader and presents lectures in a way that makes them so difficult to understand. He also expects you to Know the very expansive amount of knowledge like youve seen the information every day. He gives 3 exams and no hw so youll have no opportunity to raise you grade. I suggest not taking this class with him
Interesting lectures but he spoke too fast to make adequate notes& only had pictures in his presentations. He would repeat when asked but never slowed down & overloaded us with info. The exams were too much for an hour & 15mins: 1 small essay & 2 large. Never satisfied with answers. Don't enroll if you can avoid him because he isn't understanding.
Tests are very hard and sometimes questions are more opinionated, but you can still get those wrong. Two chapters in lectures a week and four exams over the semester with four discussion boards. If you don't be well on a test, it's impossible to get your grade up.
Professor Coughlin really knows what hes talking about and sometimes lectures can feel boring. He uses discussion boards a lot and will assign the usual group project.
If you are taking American Nat'l Gov't DO NOT PICK HIM TO BE YOUR TEACHER. PICK SOMEONE ELSE IDC HOW GOOD IT FITS YOUR SCHEDULE, YOU DO NOT WANT THIS PROFESSOR. He's very apathetic, the book is literally useless when all the questions are based off his opinions and power points. Exams were worth 78%, and he has an attitude. Plz choose someone else
I took the class during the summer and it was graded by a few essays which aren't that bad. Dr. Coughlin gives good feedback and is available outside of class if you need help with anything..
Coughlin doesn't actually teach the material on the exams, he just teaches his own opinions in class. He does a hybrid structure, and so you pretty much never actually have to go. His tests are ridiculous, and the class average is about an 80, which isn't great because there are only 4 of them, and if you tank one of them you're screwed.
The class is pretty easy as long as you pay attention and do the outside readings. The lectures were a little boring, but the Professor was nice enough. There are four essays throughout the semester which are worth quite a bit, but arent too difficult.
If you don't have vast prior knowledge about international relations events, he will make no sense as he rambles on. All of his assignments and teachings reflect his liberal adgenda. Almost none of the readings are academic, and include major bias from liberal news sources. Ultimately, I would only reccomend this class to a hard core leftist.
The worst professor in the world. Tells you what he thinks about 100 court cases then expects you to agree with him on how he interprets them. You will not learn anything and your soul will be crushed. Single handedly made me never want to be involved in politics out of fear I will have to meet more people like him.
Taking this class online for the summer. All the professor does is use teaching as a platform to push his liberal agenda. Very unfortunate that a teacher teaching a political science class that is mandatory by the state is as bias as he is when it comes to politics. Would not take this teacher, very disappointing experience there is no neutrality.
The class can be kind of challenging, he records his lectures so you can watch them and provides notes and power points. It can be a lot of information to digest but he covers many of the main themes of the course in his lectures, if you watch them then you'll be fine just don't watch try and cram them all in one day, overall pretty good professor.
He wants you to do well in his course and actually know the material and be able to talk about it in discussions/ real world activities. He is a very nice professor if you have questions outside class and is easy to get a hold of.
He is very nice if you need help outside of class. He wants you to know the material and talk about it in class. There arnt too many assignments just a few discussion posts and some essays so they have to be quality.
I liked Dr. Coughlin as a person, but I did not really enjoy his class. His lectures would sometimes be all over the place and hard to follow. The study guides were also miles long.. The tests did have some questions that were not covered in class and only in the study guides, so be careful of that.
People often have mixed opinions about Coughlin. He's honestly a great professor. He can be hard to understand, especially when he uses various theoretical terms to describe a concept, however, he truly knows his stuff. Claims that he is uninviting to various points of view are unfounded. Coughlin creates a welcoming and open-minded environment.
I love Professor Coughlin, but he can be a little hard to follow in his theoretical-based courses. However, he is very accessible outside of class and through email to answer any questions you may have. His classes are very lecture heavy, so be prepared to take notes and participate in class discussions.
He is a really nice professor but his tests online are nearly impossible if you are not a political science major. The answers for the test were a lot of the time not even in the textbook. Would not take for a university required government class.
Professor Coughlin is very opinionated, and it is hard to differentiate between his opinions and actual information. He teaches POS 2041 primarily off his book, but it is filled with heavily biased information. The tests and quizzes are reflections of his opinions, and the answers are often not explicitly stated in his lectures or the readings.
Prepare to be tested on material that was never covered in class.
Get ready for liberal propaganda. If you have your own opinion, DON'T state it. Makes you read biased books he wrote himself, gives immense amounts of readings, and expects you to know everything already. I thought my friends were kidding when they said he sucked; they were not. He will give you an F on a paper if you don't fake being a liberal.
The class itself isn't too bad, it's just very opinionated. If you go in with that realization and EXCLUSIVELY use his book and nothing else, it's not difficult. Where it gets tricky is on tests or quizzes where an opinionated question is asked. He answers emails and concerns very quickly.
Really knows his stuff. Can go on rambles sometimes but he clearly has a passion for what he teaches. Class is straightforward. DO THE READING. There is no getting around it. Everything is basically writing/essays but its very do-able if you chunk it out. Ive taken this professor for multiple classes and ive liked him as a teacher very much
This man makes ZERO sense. He rambles on nonsense and scribbles all over the board. He assigns several writing assignments that make no sense and are based off about 100 pages per week. He offered to help me several times but I honestly just stoped doing the work to save myself the stress bc it was too late to drop the class.Attendance is mandatory
Do not take this professor if you have another choice. His tests are answering what he wants to here. He is so incredibility biased. Anyone disagrees with him and he throughs a hissy fit. It was painful to sit through class. Assignments were just answering what his opinion. He makes up info/stats. His book is just his extreme liberal opinion.
I would avoid this professor if you can. All he teaches is his opinion. He makes you buy his book that he wrote that is just entirely his opinion and is teaching it as fact. All of the correct test questions are also based off his opinion.
BORING lectures, he talks in circles, and repeats himself to an annoying level. Doesn't always make sense, but assignments are easy if you can write a decent paper. Attendance is graded, but you won't fail from not showing up. Whole semester was only 4 papers and an optional research paper for extra credit. Easy class, bad professor.
This professor is terrible avoid if you have any opinions for yourself. If you do not agree with his opinions your guaranteed a B or lower within his assignments.
He is very liberal and makes you buy his own propaganda based, heavily biased book for the course material. Easily the worst professor I have ever had. Not the greatest with technology and says a lot of odd things. Hard to follow and goes in circles.
There is not much homework which is nice, however his lectures are unbearable. He takes the entire class time to talk about his own political views instead of teaching for his tests that have an average grade under 60. If you agree with his opinions the essays are easy to pass. Spent a whole month talking about how he hates Elon instead of course.
This man had a God complex. He would constantly be upset that we were not as interested in the material as he was. He believes in group assignments and doesn't care if your group doesn't help you. Sent an email at the end of the semester about how disappointed he was in us should tell you all you need to know. Avoid taking him if you can.
Your grade is weighted/distributed across a variety of things like participation/attendance, tests, group projects, a paper, etc., which caters to all types of learners! The reading can be a little intimidating, especially given that you really have to retain and comprehend the material to participate in class, but he does great explaining it!
