He is a very easy and funny professor who gives lots of extra credit!
Very helpful, and Always tries to make the class fun

very funny awesome guy, tests can be hard if you don't study enough... a 65 is a C in his class though
Great professor. Really knows his stuff and does a excellent job of explaining it. The class isn't easy though, but if you study and put effort into it he knows it.
Knows his stuff well. Godd explanations. Clear instructions on what to do. I loved the class, but studying you have to do so as to do well in the tests which are not hard at all. Very good prof.

very easy course, great prof, tests can be hard if you don't study, lots of WebCT material used, very helpfull, definatly recommended!
hes sooo nice! information is kinda tough but hes a cool guy class is interesting...well worth it! highly recommended.
Pretty easy class. Great teacher. Explains everything very well and is very helpful. He has a curve too! Highly recommended.
TESTS ARE HARD.. BORING
his tests are a little hard but it doesnt matter b/c he grading scale is great!!! I never went to class and got a B w/ ease
He is a very good teacher, his test are hard but if you pay attention and use the webCT you should be fine.
This class is really hard!! He's really nice and funny but the class is hard. The tests are very difficult even if you study! Everything else is good just not the tests.
cool guy, easy class
really really hard class, but you can tell he works hard to help everyone understand what he's trying to teach. very enthusiastic and definitely knows his material.
this class was very hard, even if you do study. He is a really cool guy and definiatly knows what he is talking. He also knows how hard the material is and gives out extra points to be added to exam grades.great grading scale.
Courtney tests are very hard. You study and u still dont get a passing grade. Only thing that was easy, was the map quiz, and guess what, I studied, got a B. That was the last time I saw a B in his class. But he's a cool guy. His homework is also hard.
Awesome teacher. Recommend taking him. Explains everything. Hard tests, but can maintain an A with the exercises and map test. I got 100 on the map test and an A in the class. Very enthusiastic and makes class fun.
Prof Courtney is the BEST. his classes are fun but his tests are hard so take good notes and study...you'll be fine if you do that
WARNING: IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND PHYSICS, DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS. i took this class expecting stuff on geography, but all i got was physics and equations... don't take this class if you're not willing to work your a** off everyday.great teacher, & clear
he is the biggest dork, but helps you out when you need it. his examples are for like year olds, but they work well. do your work and study and you can do well in his class.
can be chill. can you sit on the coutertop more often, please?
EASY A!!! Dr. Courtney is very clear... everything is from the notes, so if you take good notes, and actually study them, his tests will be just fine. Got a B on the tests, but an A on all of his mini labs... and got an A in the course, great teacher, easy class.
Awesoeme teacher!!!His class is really hard but he is willing to work with you till you get is right.... He is very helpful and i would recomend him to anyone. It's not an easy A
Very cool guy! i would recomend that you take him. The class is hard, but he is a VERY good teacher-definitely knows his stuff. The only way you wont pass his class is if u dont pay attention and u dont do the tutorals. he gives u so many oppertunities to do well! TAKE HIM!
Easy mini-labs(packets) but the tests must be studied for. It is not an easy A unless you study hard. Makes class semi-interesting. Half of final is cumulative. Got shafted! Out of the 50 non-cumulative questions, 30 were on stuff we had no time to cover in class and were expected to know.
Cool guy, tough class. Everything he said went right over my head, but he was very nice every time he tried to help me!
really liked him..tried to make corny jokes all the time. Was really helpful and let me make up an exam i missed. overall cool guy..take his class
Prof Courtney is an excellent prof. It is no easy A, but receiving an A is very capable and reasonable to acheive. I have an A in his class and he is always full of energy. The material he covers is very clear and understandable, and look over your nights the night before the test and ure fine.
Best professor I've had to date. This was a gen. ed. for me and I learned SO much. Take Courtney for something, and you will learn a lot. Best Teacher Ever!
Funny guy. It's an easy class if you take notes and pay attention.
Great teacher and interesting, even for Geography.

Go to class and take notes. All of the material on the tests come directly from the class notes. His exercises are extremely easy and he'll help you with them if you need him to. he also has a great grading system. makes it interesting, even a 3 hour class. take him
DEF. RECOMMEND!! He is such an awesome professor! You WILL learn in this class. Tests are easy if you study your notes, which means you need to go to class. He has little, mini-exercises that will improve your grade cuz their so friggin easy. Go see him if you do need help cuz he WILL help you. Not an easy A tho...easy B with some effort.
This class involves about 6 out of class easy excerises (if you need help go to him he wants to help you). THere are about 4 tests includeing the final and 1 map test(its easy). You need to study your notes and you can do good in the class.. no geography class is easy, but he defently wants you to succed in the class.
a good guy passionate about the subject but a horrible lecturer.there were several times i had to shake my self awake in the class.the material is boring and its alot of work the whole class seems to be geared to students who want to be science majors which was not me i took this class on an advisor recomedation do not take unless you like science
He is not a bad guy but his lectures are EXTREMLY boring! His class had many math equations and at times felt more like an advanced science class. In all a very tough class, I felt like me entire semester revolved around it.
He is a great guy, but he teaches the class in a very dry way with too much science and not enough geography. One map test which make it a "geography" class the rest is a combination of Chemestry, Biology, and Physics. The only really good thing about this class is his grading scale, you can get a 45 and on his scale it is a D and a 75 is a B.
Awesome professor! Class is hard if you make it hard. You can't be a slacker and expect to do well in this class (or any class for that matter!). Dr. Courtney is always willing to help and you can tell he cares about his students. Also, you need to go to class b/c a lot of the tests come from what he says in lecture. Highly reccommend!!
very hard tests, great prof. helps anyone who goes to him. not an easy general ed class but a great geog. teacher.
killer tests and final.
I am a GEO major, and the class was wayy hard. It's an advanced science course with one map quiz. Seriously, there is no Geography in this class. I was really disappointed... not planning on majoring in science n all. He is soo boring as well. Tests were hard... There are too many abbreviations to learn, too much info packed into tests.
On of theFew profs that I know who actually works very hard for his paycheck. The amount of material is overwhelming and that is because he wants to teach you the most he can.I did not study but came to classes regularly, did homework and got a C.I respect that and think it is fair. I would take his course again.
teaching is about keeping students interested and not frustrating them with unrealistic tests. grading system is hard to figure out. he cares but could do better helping students to learn
Hated him!I thought he would be good cuz his ratings are good on here.He wasn't.No matter how much I studied the notes he gave, it didn't help me on the tests.I studied my butt off for every single test.I failed one and got Cs and Ds on the rest.I ended up with a C in his class and I was so thankful, but I had to work SO hard for it.Don't take him!
He's passionate about what he teaches, but he's very hard and moves too fast. He teaches wayy too much for a gen. ed. class. There is one map quiz, and the rest of the semester is spent on weather, energy, and the likes. Dont take this class if you're not into geography...
Good Professor, have to take him for cart loves his work. Very narrow minded on the subject however, likes things done his way and any other way needs to be desribed in immense detail for him to comprehend. Projects carry their own weight, get used to reading the same font continulously with barely any breaks, it'll drive you insane. good luck
impossible, he gives endless notes of stupid graphs that dont help at all..and there is so much material covered on one test. i do not recomend this class unless u HAVE to take it..complete waste of time..not interesting at all!!!
Dr. Courtney is a cool guy. He definitely likes things done his way, but if you actually care enough to put forth the effort, he's always available for office hours. Go to class, take notes, and ask questions and you'll do fine. Not easy, but very clear in explanations - asks the class questions that force you to understand the material
Really nice guy. It's a difficult class, so he's definitely not an easy A. The plus is that anything above a 75 is a B on his grading scale.
This is a difficult class, but if you do the exercises and study hard, you will get at least a B. He does give some extra credit which is good, and really cares about helping out his students. He always gives hints for exercises.
In order to do well in this class you need to actually show up, read the book, and study your notes. It also helps if you do the extra tutorials and practice tests he posts online. He's a pretty nice guy, always willing to help. Sometimes the lectures can drag on, but he's really passionate about the subject and tries to make it interesting.
This class is so easy. He's a really good teacher who likes participation and goes at a really slow pace. His assignments are really easy, not to mention he puts up exactly how to do them on Blackboard. His grading scale is more than generous and his tests are easy. Great guy, great teacher. Definitely take him for Geography.
He is a really good, he is always there to help you and his grading scale is generious. To get a B it is a 75-89...now you can't tell me that's nice. Tests might be a little hard but he gives you exercises to bring up your grade and gives you one extra credit pop quiz that you know about. I highly recommend him.
He is a ver good teacher and knows what he is talking about. I am not one to normally be interested in history, but I thought his class was and I got an A. His tests were hard and the final was ridiculous, but he explains everything very clearly and is helpful and posts all of his nots on Blackboard. I highly recommend him.
Geography was extremely difficult for me. I thought I would pass, if my attendance was good, and if I came in for help, and studied the text book(which is what he covers in class) And did the packet work, HE STILL FAILED ME! because his tests are RIDICULOUS! They have nothing to do with the reading/what he teaches.
Even though I went in for help, and did all the packet work, and studied teh text, the tests were so difficult. And pleaded him to to raise my grade based on my awesome attendance..he still failed me and i needed to graduate! He clearly does not have a heart.
I hope he checks this page, b/c he needs to realize , that for an intro class to geo IS EXTREMELY Difficult. reviewing the book does not help, because the tests never cover what is asked. He helps with packet work but does not take in consideration for overall grade..if you are struggling. veyr inconsiderate. even when you prepare in advance.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! YOU WILL WANT TO KILL YOURSELF! when you think your taking a geo class, he thinks hes teachinG an honors physics class! His class was the only class I EVER had to drop, a long W/1/2 of the class. He is ridiculous!! I STRONGLY ADVISE YOU NOT TO TAKE HIS CLASS! ITS THE WORST DECISION YOU EVER MADE!! I PROMISE!
I have no idea what everyone is talking about, this class is easy because he uses diagrams for basically everything and explains everything so well. If you think this class is hard, it's because you don't come to class or make at least a little bit of effort. I had no interest in geography until I took this class. Dr. Courtney is a great Professor.
Do not take this class if this is not your major, try to get it with another teacher. Very difficult material for an into/elective class. I studyed hard, did online tutorials, got a tutor, read all the chapters, and didnt miss one class. I still got a C and worked very hard to maintain it. Its just alot of info and calcualtions so if math isnt for you
DO NOT TAKE. IM WARNING YOU.very difficult class, low class averages, take with different prof.
This was the hardest, and i repeat HARDEST classes i have ever taken. Although he uses a lot of diagrams, it can be a bit confusing. I dropped this class after the second midterm. once again i repeat SECOND midterm. There are 3 in total. He's a really nice guy but if geography is not your thing, i would not recommend taking this class.
He is extremely hard! If you can't commit to the class, you will do VERY poorly. However, if you put the time and effort necessary into the class, he is an INCREDIBLE professor and I recommend him to anyone. Cares so much about the students and tries multiple methods to get the info into your heads. Terrific and very helpful prof! Loved him!
Everyone saying this class was HARD it's because you didn't show up or study. It's a college class so get this, you actually have to wake up and do work! There's lots of information but he goes over everything and is always willing to help you. Also lots of chances to bring up your grade. He also has a hilarious sense of humor if you pay attention!
Worst teacher ever.Went to office for help and he said "study more".Says the same jokes every class and you have to teach yourself.Only good thing is he grades on a curve (75% is a B) but its not worth it.
Probably one of the hardest intro classes I have ever taken, and I showed up to class and studied hard for every test. He expects a lot out of you, but he is very willing to help you out in any way. He had us learn a whole chapter by ourselves because he was behind and then made our final up with a ton of questions on that chapter.
His class is very difficult but he is a very good teacher and will help you any way he can if you go to him. The class is very demanding and takes a lot of work to do well. Good to take if you like science.
Didnt really like him, he was super hard and kinda mean. Went to office hours for help and he didnt really help me at all.
Dr. Courtney is an outstanding professor!! He knows what he is talking about. He is very meticulous in regard to grading, but only does so for your benefit. He really wants to prepare you for the "real world" in regard to finding a job, which I think is awesome. That is what college is for isn't it? He is always willing to help. Best professor.
He is an amazing professor! I have no interest in geography and he knows how to teach crystal clear. I understood everything that was taught to me and he makes everything relate-able. Highly recommend!!
Make a difficult map, then write a book about it. Solve numerous equations, then write a book about it. Work with classmates, get points taken off and criticized. You better have HOURS to spend in the lab. The work piles up and tests always have crazy essays and are EXTREMELY difficult. Condescending in class though nice outside of it.
Not sure how some of the material is relevant, detail oriented, but not practical application.
Dr. RC teaches like you're a third grader, and then tests you like you have been a geo major for the past 10 years of your life. The class is really hard when it shouldn't be, and he doesn't help the matter with his boring lectures (longest 50 minutes of my life.) If you are into geography, MAYBE consider taking this class to get on his good side.
Be prepared to be confused, but ask for help and he will make sure you understand what is going on.
I took physical geography. Dr Richard Courtney gives wonderful lectures. I loved each and everyone. I also liked how he gave no online work. Make sure you do good on that first map test tho. Dr Courtney will love to explain a concept to you in his office. Just a smart and likable guy
I'm taking Dr. C for GEG10 this semester. We've spent the entire semester , literally every lecture, doing math problems. This class is more like a climatology course than a physical geography course. Not only was I unprepared for such coursework, I also feel cheated because this isn't what I signed up for. At all.
Dr. Courtney is a great professor. The first half of the class I had know idea what was going on, but by the end everything made sense. His tests and exercises are hard, but he is more then willing to help. If you're a geo major I would def recommend Courtney... I wish he taught senior sem.
Dr. Courtney is a really bright guy, and a truly great teacher. Wasn't expecting to take so much away from this course. I warn you, class averages were bad: you MUST study for this course. Hint: only purchase the atlas, the textbook is summarized on D2L in significantly better form. Understanding the 'tutorials' on D2L will land you an A.
Dr. Courtney was a great professor. I was super bad at geography but he was always available to help me during office hours. Take my advice and if you are struggling, GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. His class is all notes and you really need to study for this course!
Dr. Courtney is a great guy, but a bad professor for someone who is taking geography as a minor or elective. He expects to much on his assignments and bombards students with work. For example there can be a test in a week or a paper due in 5 days, and he will throw an excel assignment into the mix. He must have a lot of time on his hands?
Honestly a great person, but the class material Is so hard. If you arent going to school for geography do not take this! I am an ed major and I will never use most of the material I learned in this class again.
This class is hard, but it is for the better of the student. The goal of the class was to make great maps, and if you follow along and put in the hours of work, you will succeed. While enrolled in the class you will get frustrated and think it is not worth it, but in the end I can attribute all my skills of making maps to him. He is a great prof.
This professor was very boring and quick when speaking I have a disability and couldn't keep up with him so I had to withdraw.
Don't take his class unless you have to for your degree. He's a nice guy but his classes are extremely boring. Oh, and if you thought you were just gonna learn about coordinates and topography, you're not. We spent more time learning about the climate than anything else. He has 3 exams and a final. The class average for each exam was below 65%.
Dr. Courtney is a fantastic professor. He is clear and concise with the things that he expects, and gives amazing feedback on what you need to improve. Although a tough grader he ensures that despite it a generous grade scale ensures that one bad grade wont crush you, and with a project focused class, hard work and improvement are rewarded.
Worst professor I've ever had. By a mile, not even close. Tests are impossible, 60 minutes for 60 questions. Class average is a 60% (which is a C on his grading scale). Teaches us advanced physics instead of geography. Not caring. Not funny. Makes up his own terms. He needs to stay far away from academia. Take this class w Dr. Davis instead.
Dr. Courtney was one of the worst teachers I've ever had. He lectured the entire time, went through slides so fast, and didn't care if you had the information. His tests were so hard and even if you try to pay attention it didn't make sense. I will never take his classes again and if you don't have to take it for your major I wouldn't take it.
One word I have for this professor, RUN. I am not a science major and his Earth Users Guide course (Elements of Phys Geg) was a part of my freshman schedule that I was assigned. He was very lecture heavy. He moved very fast throughout material. A bunch of kids really liked him but his class was definitely not a strong suit for me.
This class isn't a nightmare but it can be lecture-heavy w/ 5 exams and 6 work packets. It's not a physical geography but still a passable class, I suggest taking detailed notes and studying a few days before the exam. It's a good science credit because there's no lab period. I have flashcards on knowt user mpush listed under semester one.
okay yes dr courtney is a more difficult professor, but his lectures are clear and if you pay attention, you will pass with flying colors. get your assignments in on time, come to class, and stay on track. he is very nice funny and interesting. i would say though that the class is more meteorology than geography, but overall very interesting.
Prof Courtney was not a bad professor, just a very boring class and very hard to sit through his lectures
Professor Courtney is a pretty good teacher and attempted to make a boring class fun with jokes and using his sense of humor. Overall the class is easy for a gen ed if needed. Very lecture heavy and gives decent amount of homework he calls exercises. Really good teacher though.
Richard Courtney's GEG10 class can be challenging, but engaging with his teaching style pays off. Attend lectures, take detailed notes, and use resources like unstuck ai for effective study prep. It's a tough but rewarding geography course.
