Very tough, lots of material to memorize, constant lecturing, 4 tests, no papers to write, At least 100 names dates people or facts to know for each test while only 25 are chosen. Easy to pass, you can retake each test, knowing the 25 on it, for a C.

I took 230 & 231 back to back & that was a BIG mistake. Even if I took just one class it would have been difficult. TOO much to memorize. I would not recommend this teacher.

4 hard tests,no pop quizzes, lots of material, but nice and interesting teacher. You know exactly the questions on the tests. It gets easier after the first test.
he knows his stuff. it's alot of memorizing. if your good at it, you'll do well. he's relatively interesting. he gives you all info. needed for the test. acting like your interested will help. ask ?'s after or during class.
Can be very boring at times, do NOT put your head down let alone fall asleep or feel his wrath. lots of memorizing, 4 tests all lecturing lots of homework. very consistent.
good teacher if you like lectures and can memorize things
the class was just horrible!
This teacher is absolutely horrible. My friend and i took this class together and she barely passed and he failed me the day of the final exam after he told me i would be fine if i didn't withdraw, what a lier! All he does is talk, the class is not interesting, plan on memorizing 25 essays per test,
He really isn't all that bad. If you attend class, take notes, and do the assignments (which aren't even required) you will do fine. The bad comments are obviously by lazy people. You MUST attend class to pass it. This isn't something to take as an easy way out, but it is not that difficult.
the 1st day i thought i was screwed and for the first week i thought it was gonna be my worst class but by the end i was so glad i took it i learned so much and it turned out to be my best class last semeseter
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
I recieved an A, and I attended class, but I still think he is a horrible teacher. There are much better History teachers out there!!
he is very opinionated and teches the class with passion
Prof. Daugherty teaches his class with great passion! He knows his history very well. He is always willing to help if you need it. I would take his class again.
oh my god! keeps you the entire time, but does ALLOW a 15 min. break. he doesn't move from podium. you will write&write&write; no recording allowed. tests very hard, unless you can memorize list 25 terms + endless pages of notes. if u stay, get on his good side. you repeat the same lectures 40yrs, you'd be good too. he shames u of m/his alma mater.
He is a good person with an exterior that is not so welcoming. I learned a lot from his class and enjoyed it throroughly, but many did not. He's cynical and easily irritated. He was the first professor that truely complimented me and took an interest im me as a student. I was flattered. He told me that I belonged at UofM, well so does he!!
I had to work very hard to pass this class and it was so hard to memorize all the terms he gives, lectures were a little dry, but he is very intellegent, I learned a lot, but be prepared to work VERY HARD he definetly does not give multiple choice tests all ESSAY
Not too bad of proff. . .the man knows his****! damn. . .went on for an hour about Teddy Roosevelt.. . .over all a good class, NOT FOR SOMEONE looking for a blow off class. . .just dont go to the bathroom in the middle of lecture and be ready to write. . .other than that hes not too bad
A grumpy aging old man, who is angry at the world.Very opinionated (everyone isn't a liberal). When interacting with students he tries to be intimidating, it's almost like he is yelling at you.Tests are hard to pass, unless you do the three million definitions he gives you. He talks nonstop to the last minute.Only take him if you must. Be prepared.
No chance of an A, period. Take him if you want to lower your GPA.
If you like history A LOT, you will like what he teaches. You might not like him, but he teaches interesting things and prepares you well for the tests. His tests are hard and you wont pass if you dont study. Through the whole class, every class is straight through note taking,no breaks. Don't miss class. If you like history I reccomend him.
This shouldn't be considered American History. It should be considered PEOPLE in American History (Most of his notes are based on characteristics of very pointless people in history). He is a very boring teacher, speaks faster than you can write, and mocks you when you ask a question. Not to mention, he has the personality of an ice cube.
Very rude and inconsiderate....lectures the whole time. Doesn't let people ask questions, his tests are ALL essays .....beware you must know all the definitions .....very very RUDE !!!! If you can take Caparolli instead ....he is an AWESOME teacher !!!!!
This is the best teacher, you will learn alot from this man and it is very easy if u study!!

You have to take a lot of notes I find it intersting not a boring teacher some might find him rude but he's just straight forward and thats good because whats the point of a teacher that will make you think your right if your not I recommend him to anyone who wants to take history I learned a lot and didnt even like history until I took this class
Had the same 2200 as the others, found the class to be difficult but informative. This is not a blow-off class. He's opinionated and there is a lot of writing, but he knows his stuff. Do not sign up for this if you aren't a hard worker. My only sub-A grade in five semesters.
this teacher doesnt write anything on the board ever... and gives you a bunch of terms to study.. and the exams suck.
He gives a lot of notes and it's a bit hard to keep up with him sometimes, however, if you are at all interested in history you can really learn from this guy. Also, unlike most macomb history professors, I didn't find him boring.
When will he retire. Should have been gone in Fall 2005
As long as you go to all the class sessions and take very detailed notes, you will be fine. However, this is not an easy A class, there is ALOT of memorizing involed and his exams are all essay. If you miss one class, you will not do that well on the test unless you get the notes. No quizzes though. Final grade all based only on exams.
Worked my butt off for half a semester, had an A average, missed a week w/dr. note . Made up test in his office. Gave me a C for an A test becuz he said he couldn't be sure I hadn't cheated!? could not reach a compromise so dean let me drop. Very upsetting experience. Would never recommend!
this **** gives 2 full hours of notes everytime he wont let u out of there ,i would never take him again , you will have to study for hours and hours just to get a stupid A , alot of work from text and alotttttttt of notes like books of notes dont take him
He's not the most caring individual, but you do learn from him if you listen. He is very strait forward. Keeps you the whole time without a break, but this is understandable because of all the notes. He won't pick favorites. Will grade you fairly.
Agree with what most people say below. Everyday, you go to class, he talks the entire session and you write and write and write and write. Tests are all essay. 1/2 of test is on notes, 1/2 is on a term sheet he gives you from your textbook. A LOT OF MEMORIZING!! Not an easy A. Knows what hes talking about, but is kinda boring.DONT SLEEP IN CLASS!!
He is very hard but knows what he is talking about. I learned a lot from his class and I am warning anyone who thinks they can get an A in this class without trying VERY hard...well its impossible. I do recommend him to those who are not slackers because you do learn a lot
One of the rudest people I have ever had in my life. Interesting class but the man is a jerk. Take Caporelli or Meryowitz instead.
He was cold. Unlikable. He kept his students below him, where he likes them. Does not tolerate tardiness or abcences. Do not expect much sympathy even if you have a doctor's note.
great prof.
He tells history like a story. I had no interest in that class at all, but he is a lively speaker and it ended up being very interesting. He never does multiple choice tests - you simply have to know your stuff. Make sure you wirte the definitions out of the book - that extra credit will improve your grade lots!!!
Don't miss class and take tons of notes und you'll get a good grade. He is a critical man, but will be thrilled once he sees you care about his class and do work for it!!! Would definitely take it again!
lots and lots and lots of notes.....and even more studying- you learn a ton though.... wouldnt take him again.
You have to attend class & you take alot of notes, BUT he is very interesting. Don't show up late or sit in the back cause he won't think your interested & he doesn't like that. Test are all essays but he offers enough ex credit to raise test scores a whole grade. Im taking him again because he may be hard but he is very interesting.
Plain and simple, this man is rude and judgmental. Yes, he loves history and you can learn a lot from him, hence the decent-enough rating. But he's insensitive and condescending--don't ask questions w/o being made to feel belittled. Interpersonal skills suck. Decent-enough lecturer (but don't ask questions).
if you dont like history, dont take this class with him. everything is hard. and he is realy mean
The only aspects that I will clearly remember about history forever came from this man's class. However, if you're looking for a nice, helpful professor, this isn't the class for you. Professor Daugherty is ridiculously rude and doesn't respect his students at all. I would take his class again because I learned tons, but ugh, he's TERRIBLY MEAN.
Need to do the work. Lots of notes. People complain about falling asleep? Your in school to learn! If your looking for easy A, don't take this class. You get what you put into the class
Had him for american history..can't really remember, a couple of years ago. Guys he is a perfect example of a what a college professor is. Class isn't supposed to be always easy. I like history and was really attentive and he was very cool to me through the whole class even referring to me during classes..jokoes and stuff. all in all tough but good
If you want someone to make you feel like crap, then take this professor.
This man was probably the most miserable man I have ever met in my life. HIs class was hard, you have to memorize every word that he snarls at you (and he will the entire class period). Don't ever expect to be let out early. However, he's a really good teacher and it's very informative. If you want to actually learn, take this class.
Very demanding teacher. He's full of knowledge, and very, VERY opinionated in his point of view. This is one of those classes where if you can pass this course, you'll fly through college.
Very knowledgeable teacher. He really likes to teach and he know a lot about what he is teaching. If you want to learn about history take your classes with him.
I took his American History class in the summer---all essay test---very demanding in the summer because all test are essay. It was difficult but doable. I got an A. Do not miss class and do study and you'll do well---very time consuming so make sure you have the time to study.
I took the class in the summer. My advice is to take notes, and go to class. He is not a hard teacher, the test cover exactly what he teaches and you get extra credit.
Great teacher. Very demanding and knows what he is talking about. Only take his class if you are going to study and want to learn. Anyone who left a negative comment needs to pull their head out of their ass and remember they are in school to learn, and teach well is what he does.
Very engaging when daugherty lectures, attendance is absolutely MANDATORY,
Very engaging when daugherty lectures, attendance is absolutely MANDATORY, if you want to be challenged and learn the material, this is your guy.
This man has an ax to grind. You'll learn a lot, but he's a grumpy old man who'll sneer and snarl the entire lecture. If you want a sweet, caring prof, look elsewhere. But if you want to learn history, you'll learn from him.
take this class if you want to learn history. take someone else if you just need the credit. the tests are entirely essay/recall but he gives you all the material thats going to be on the test! just study and youll pass. dont leave early, ever and show up!!! take lots of notes. hes very clear and goes over material multiple times
This man definetly knows his history. You will learn ALOT in his class. However, he is very opinionated and adds a liberal twist to each one of his lectures. If you are not a liberal, brace yourself..
He for sure knows his history but he can be a jerk.He LOVES to talk thats why he lectures right up until class is scheduled to be over.Take ALOT of notes because he will randomly ask you about wut he lec on.His tests can be hard b.c he wil give you like 4 pages of info.but not use most of the terms on the test, so you studied other info. for nothin
Excellent Professor. All teachers should teach with his passion and integrity. You will get carpal tunnel from taking notes, but well worth the effort.
He really loves history and wants us to love it too.
This was a hard class. He talks all class about whats on the test and he expects you to write down everything he says. He is passionate about his subject,I can say that. He is not very helpful when it comes to answering questions and you have to read the book very thouroughly to get a good grade. The tests are also very hard.
This was a very hard class, but one of my favs. He is a GREAT prof. and will love you if you pay attention and talk to him. also, go to Marshall for the field trip, he will love you for it. read everything he gives you. I would take his class again. Good luck =]
I can't say enough good things about this professor. No, his class is not "easy" in the sense that you can do nothing and pass, but all you have to do is show up to every class, take notes (5-7 pages a day), and do the terms from the book that he gives you. There is no "homework", there are bonus points, and you will learn a ton!! exams = essays!
Prof. Daughtry is a great prof. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just lazy. He'll go out of his way to make sure you learn the material and engages you in his lectures. Great guy with plenty of knowledge. Can't imagine taking 2340 with anyone else.
He holds the record for the most challenging yet enlightning teacher I've ever had. I love history but I hate being forced to learn it in a classroom. He changed this! If you want to LEARN he is the proffessor to take,if you like slacking don't take him. The only problem I had is he never lets you out a second early hes usually late lettin you out.
If you want to learn architecture, take this class! You MUST attend all classes. The class is very interesting, I learned a lot. Yes he can be a grumpy old man, but he was very entertaining and passionate about the subject.
This was the best history class I've ever taken. He is passionate about the subject, and knowlegable. No one knows this stuff better than he does. You will work in this class, no question, but the reward will be great if you finish. Study your notes every day after class. I would take any class he teaches.
EXCELLENT TEACHER! Passionate about subject, a bit opinionated. Class was pretty much all lecture and notes, which can be a pain, but it is interesting stuff. The people who i heard complain and got awful grades were the ones you expected to do awful. The lay kids who want to get open book tests and take naps during lectures. Excellent teacher.
I just started this class. I used to love history, but i never liked it being forced down my throat. This man is the worst excuse for a teacher i have ever seen. He literally called the entire class idiots and threw a temper tantrum in front of us. I'm not learning anything, i have 30 plus pages of notes and no idea what to study. Fire him, save us
Take good notes and do the study sheets because 50% of the questions on the exam are the same questions from the study guide, the other half from notes
He is not an easy teacher, but I learned a lot about architecture. He loves the subject that he is teaching.
His lectures are very informative, right to the point. Be preapared for an almost non stop note taking from beginning to end of class. I really enjoyed his architecture class. If you want to take the architecture class, you better hurry before it's not offered anymore - that's coming from the professor.
Tough. Nice guy hard teacher.
There are positves and negatives about this prof. I've learned alot! On the other hand, he has serious issues with people who don't appear to respect history, sleep, text, go to bathroom, ect. When he goes off on someone, it's uncomfortable to say the least, and a time waster for the rest! Exams are brutal! Waaayyy overstudy if you want an A!
This is not an easy class, you must attend every class to receive the notes which are crucial for each test. Tests are challenging and the lectures are the entire length of the class. On a brighter note, this is the most experienced, interesting teacher I've had so far. You will learn A LOT!!
I had this prof and had to take him again because I like a challenge. This IS NOT an easy class. you absolutely need to book. Exams are extremely difficult, I have never gotten an A, and that is with 10 extra credit points. He's very grumpy if you don't respect the class. go to the bathroom, texting, sleeping, or late is unexceptable. LEARN ALOT
he refused to let me use the restroom and scolded me like i was in 5th grade im a 27 yr old man and expect to be treated like one. the first day of class i got there 5 mins early and he was already lecturing he likes to hear himself talk he needs to retire
To all complaining about notes, It's a LECTURE class. I retained alot of the info he was teaching. Very knowledgeable man. Fair. Would recommend him to anyone willing to learn about history. You actually need to study for his class. Has a passion for teaching and subject. Not a easy A like other classes. I have much respect for him. Tells it like i
This man is brilliant and has very high standards. He has so much to share about history. In his class you will either learn the material comprehensively or you will fail.
Lots of notes, class goes the full time and does not let class out a minute early. Very stern, 4 tests, 60 terms for each test. You must pay attention and study as much as you can or this class will be impossible to pass.
Excellent professor. He would be excellent teaching at any educational institution. For all that I learned, the class was a huge bargain. I took another of his classes, that's how good he is.
This is how much I love this class: I have never been to Florida and I was offered a one week trip from my aunt, but I love this class so much I want to stay home. He can sometimes have a temper, but he's a living encyclopedia who can be very easy going. I recommend him to anyone who wants to become an expert in architecture. Passionate history!
Very good teacher, interesting, very stern, he is not there to play, but teach and he is very good at it!
Excellent professor! A wealth of knowledge and a passion for teaching. Very progressive politically. If you don't pay attention, come in late, miss classes, or want to text during class, you will NOT pass and he WILL go off! If you come to learn you will do fine, and he is very nice and helpful professor.
He is very passionate about history. He goes the full two hours which is boring and he is monotone, not interesting. A LOT of notes, which is pathetic. History is already a boring subject, him teaching it makes you puke. If you love history, and you want to be treated like a 15 year old, be my guest. I dread going to this class.
I had him for 3 classes before I transferred to OU as a history major, got A's in all. He inspired me because of how passionate he is when he teaches. He is tough & strict, but it's college, suck it up! One time when I missed class he called to make sure I was ok, then he went out of his way to teach me what I missed during office hours. THANK YOU!
A great teacher and a great man overall; he cares about all of his students.
He can be super rude at times. You take a lot of notes! his whole class is lecture and note taking. if you don't take notes you get yelled at. tests are very hard! there is a lot of information to get in and the stuff he talks a lot about doesn't even end up on the test! worst class ever. if you love history then i assume you will like the class.
He is so passionate about history! Knows every detail about everything. If you like history and don't mind lots of note taking I can honestly say he is just about the best teacher I have ever had
Honestly one of my top 2 favorite teachers ever. He inspired me to continue a history major and is the reason I'm now at UofM. He is so interesting and really knows his history! I loved his passion for the subject. He makes his expectations crystal clear. Such a great class!
Great teacher! You take notes the whole class period and he doesn't let you out early. His lecture are very interesting and he is very passionate about history! 5 test and 30 extra credit terms with each test. Highly recommend taking his class.
He talked the whole class, would barely stop for questions, made you write his notes word for word. I went through 2 notebooks with just his lectures. His tests are just questions he wrote on a sheet of paper, he gives you a piece of printer paper, and makes you write out paragraphs for each question, so you better know your stuff.
One of the worst confessor I had. I hated every second of his class. All we do for two straight hours is take notes. His very disrespectful and rude. His a hater. If you want to pass DON'T take this class. Trust me I ended up withdrawing.
he talked for two straight hours and is not polite. if you do so much as get up to go to the bathroom or set your pencil down to scratch your head he will call you out in front of the entire class asking what you're doing and why you stopped taking notes. half way through the semester over half the class dropped the course.
This professor is extremely rude! He has no respect towards students. His judgmental! Trust me his the worst! I would rate him at a 0!
In the beginning of the semester my class thought he was really rude and didn't care about his students. For his test he gives you a paper with 20 questions on it that you answer in paragraph form on blank paper. At the end of the semester my class admitted that he did care about us and knows what he's doing.
Class is hard but interesting. If you study the class should be easy, if you don't you'll most likely fail. He gives you a study sheet for the exam that if you turn it in you get 10% extra credit towards the corresponding exam (might be different for every class.)
This professor is one of the worst. He lectures the entire class period and has no visual references. He makes the class extremely boring. The only grades you get are from the tests, which are all short-answer. Very strict about coming to class and taking notes. He called me out for missing ONE class and screamed at me in front of the entire class.
If you have any interest in history, or plan to major in it, then I highly recommend Professor Daugherty. He's extremely knowledgeable and gives very passionate lectures. Just be prepared for long lectures, lots of notes, and hard tests. If you can handle that, then you'll enjoy any class that Professor Daugherty teaches.
he is a good teacher that will teach you if your willing to learn and study, and you write your own awnsers to your test so be prepaired
He's a cool guy. Need to take really good notes and make sure to read the book. Tests can be difficult.
I ended up withdrawing from it. You MUST attend EVERY class or else you'll miss A LOT of information. His lectures come straight from him so you must take notes while he talks in a monotonous tone for two hours. You also need to take notes from the textbook on your own since half the tests are from class and half from textbook.
I did not like him or his teaching style at all. He acts like this is a medical program. I had my laptop on the desk and he never said we couldn't have laptops. He started screaming hysterically. I have never seen someone so upset over nothing. Also he is very lazy. Hand writes and copies the tests, doesn't even bother using word.
Absolutely terrible. Thinks we are living in the 1900s. He doesn't use any powerpoint or even typed words! His class is just him talking for hours. And he will go past the hour, for every class, so be ready to be late for your next class. He will call you out if you do bad on one of his sloppily hand written exams. Beyond unprofessional.
You can't bring a laptop to take notes. You can skip three times before it hurts your grade. Do the terms for each exam because it adds 10 extra points. he gives extra credit, it doesn't worth much (but anything helps). He does talk fast but will repeat if you ask. If you actually study and write decent notes, you can pass this class.
He was a very very hard professor but at the end of the class, I knew so much about US history. Dont show up late, late, or talk because he will call you out and embarrass you in front of the class. I loved this class because I was proud of getting a good grade even though I knew it was challenging.
His classes prepared me for university. I transferred and got a BA degree in history. If you think he is bad, wait until you transfer. None of my history professors allowed computers and had hand written essay exams or long research papers as your entire grade. He is VERY professional and if you make an effort, you will do fine.
I took professor Daugherty way back in 2011 and again in 2012. I learned so much in his class that I gifted him a book on Robert E. Lee. I am currently a professor at Macomb myself and I wish he was still a professor here; he was the best teacher I've ever had at any level. Also an incredibly brave and loyal man whose life story was remarkable.
