very orginized prof,
Bring a pillow to class. Regurgitates handbook by using transperencies.

Better off if class was taught by the REAL Ned Flanders!!!
what happens when excel isn't used anymore?
uses excel for math equations - very confusing. no office hours, but if you can catch him he explains material well.very hard exam. has a seating plan for 100+ students. overall didnt mind his class but he only taught half the course
Very Very Hard tests.. Unforgettable!!!
Not as bad as everyone makes him out to be. He made a test that was designed to actually test our knowledge (instead of our memory), and everyone whined. Didn't like the seating plan and random calling of people to answer questions though.
Tons of useless crap in courseware. Stupid test format. Hard course made even tougher by a bad prof who seems more interested in preaching how GREAT finance is instead of helping students understand the material and do well.
What the heck is this guy trying to teach? Hard to understand. Doesn't do enough examples. Needs to use the chalk board more and stay away from his damn laptop!
Examples??? It would be nice if we saw some. Just because you have a PhD doesn't mean that you are any good. Let Adrian Lawson run the course.
Extremely horrible prof. Definitely should not be running the course.
Uptight!
Probably the worst prof you will encounter in 2nd year commerce. More interested in using pretentious words than clarifying concepts. Courseware is horribly written and this guy honestly just doesnt seem to know how to teach. Rarely in his office, doesnt do examples in classand makes every test question loaded with ****. its intro course relax
His courseware is good so you can buy the textbook but dont worry about buying the study guide. He is sort of an annoying little man but not a bad guy, thoroughly interested in what he teaches.
Worst Prof ever, does not help at all, and finds joy in failing students with ridiculous questions on the midterm and exam. This guy should not be teaching finance!!
Sucked. So insecure, he attempts to treat MBA students like freshmen by talking down to you. Heaven forbid you ask a question or start a discussion. He prefers it to be a lecture course in which he can stand at the front and puke up info at you with no exchanges whatsoever. Do yourself a favour - take Macro with ANYONE else.
WORST PROF EVER in my two years of school. He talks gibberish in class. I dont think he has ever heard of the term "EXAMPLES". How does he expect us to learn how to do maths without doing examples in class??? His coursepack is useless. Not to mention he has no concern abt any of his students, NONE AT ALL!!!
Wooooaaaaw you know you have a bad prof when his M/C tests dont even have the right choices on them. He doesn't know how to teach... he should stick to writing books. Worst professor I have ever had, hands down.
A class that could have been fun and interesting was completely destroyed by brutal exams. We got easy Qs in Class anyone could solve and brutal webs of a numerical mess on the exams. Geez..balance it out
Talks and talks and talks even though no one understands. The only reason I passed was b/c the profs switched for the final exam- just passed each midterm b/c class average bumped up 5% and 7% on each- then does not allow contact before 2nd midterm even though no one knows whats going on.
Incomprehensible, not very helpful, always busy, more interested in his publicity, never gave enough examples, not a good prof.
Didn't think he was that bad. Huge bell curve helped. A solid math/problem solving background helps a lot in this course cause many questions test problem solving skills rather than straight memory. Course pack + textbook a bit $$ and redundant.
His book is not that great on its own but if you read it and go to class everything makes perfect sense. All you need to do is read and do practice problems and your are set for exam. His true or false are extremely tricky but calculation questions are very straight forward if you know what you are doing.
His textbook is absolutely horrible, needs to provide a real textbook and then it make his mediocre lectures actually help
completely useless textbook which he assumes people ALREADY have a background in finance, WHICH WE DON'T!! its an introductory course FOR GOODNESS SAKE! Lecture is somewhat helpful, but not overly, lecture is A LOT more helpful than the textbook, but that doesn't mean much.
Oh geeze what can I say. Ridiculously useless proff, just as bad if not worse then the stats proffs in 2nd year Buchanan and sproul
Lectures easy to understand and follow. Textbook sucks though - does very little in explaining concepts. Ended up googling most things. GO TO TUTORIAL.. you learn a lot more as you apply concepts in assigned questions. The TA I had was very helpful.
This guy is the worst prof i've ever had. His textbook sucks, he expects people to already know finance (its an intro course), and worst of all he is disrespectful towards his students. BORING and ANNOYING. Fire him already mac.
Thinks he invented Finance. Makes you buy the textbook that he wrote so he can profit. The whole this is chalked full of spelling and grammar errors and written in first person like a children's book. No respect or concern for his students.
Don't buy the textbook, it's full of useless junk and he just wants to make a buck off his classes. He's smart, but he can't teach at all. Definitely a self teaching class. He needs to explain more in his lectures!
only way I passed the course was because he made the midterms similar to the practice ones. other than that, extremely boring, confusing, and his textbook might as well not be written in english it's that difficult to understand
His textbook is not great. He expects people to already know finance. His examples are not clear, we have to figure out how to do certain questions on our own. Not an easy course. Torture.
I loved finance, until I had this prof. He is very rude to students. His text is full of mistakes and he expects way too much from students in an introductory course. His textbook for the course wasn't even endorsed by a publisher due to it's poor quality. His midterms are definitely not representative, so make sure you know everything..
Horrible prof, tests are not representative, his practice problems are fraught with errors and formulas not covered in lecture or his (pricey, and poorly written) "textbook"
The worst prof. I have ever encountered. His book is poorly written, he doesn't explain anything and makes exams difficult and unrepresentative. I used to like finance, now I hate it.
Dr. Dick Deaves is easily the worst instructor, at any level of education, that I have ever had. He requires students to buy HIS textbook and workbook for the course, which conveniently seems to change by the year. He is disrespectful to students, careless, and worst of all his textbook is filled with mistakes and is incredible unclear. Horrible.
worst prof ever seen in university. Force you to buy his terrible textbook which dont even have a step in example.
By far the worst prof. Enough said.
make sure to read the footnotes in his book will ask questions on exam that are taken from them
A lot of people seem to really dislike Prof Deaves, and I'm not really sure why. I thought he was actually pretty good; the most interesting Finance prof I've had so far to say the least. He has his own book, with some typos here and there, but otherwise I thought it was useful. Overall the course wasn't too bad, better than 3FA3 in my opinion!
Textbook is full of errors, entirely written in first person. Tests contain errors, course is unstructured and hard to learn from. Boring and confusing
Deaves is an okay prof. I found that when I put work into reading the textbook it was actually really helpful. It just took a bit of work to pull it together. He's a lot better than Brewer! Don't even bother going to Brewer's lectures.
He needs to stop using his full of error, self-written book. He is that prof who'd teach you ABC and ask you to handle Shakespearian literatures, with B and C switched in order probably.
The textbook is poorly explained. It often just gives you the equations and answers and random concepts and expects you to figure out how everything fits together on your own. In lectures, he goes through examples, but he expects you to already understand all the steps he is taking even though the textbook hardly explains steps. It's a mess.
Horrible prof, doesn't realize he's teaching an intro class and thinks everyone has at least 2 years of finance classes. Doesn't teach any of the basics of finance just bs formulas that make it look more like a calc course than a finance course. If you've never taken a finance before you will struggle as he only teaches what ever is in his bs text
He is just too bad!
Deaves' lectures are very disorganized and complicated. He is really really sweet guy but he is not really doing a good job teaching 2nd year finance.
Terrible instructor. Really need to change this course. Made me have a really bad first impression on finance.
Wow, what a terrible prof. In all my years in my academic career, I have not seen a worst instructor than Richard. He will make you dislike finance very much.
This prof is the example of someone who does not care about his students. His only goal in life is his research in which he always advertises. His textbook has no been updated for the past 5 years and there are full of errors. His lectures seems like he just wants to get it over with so he could get back to his research.
The gatekeeper of commerce second year. He has a 60% final exam fail rate. If you pass his course, you're guaranteed to get into third year.
Do not take 2FA3 with richard
Awful prof. Seriously do not take this course
Taking this course is like playing russian roulette.
this prof ruined my life
Richard is all over the place. Not qualified to teach this course in my opinion. The dean should really look into revamping this dreadful course
SO BAD WOW
Rumour has it that if you rate Richard Deaves a terrible score, you'll pass this class. You'll need all the luck possible to pass this course. This is exactly how this course is structured, online quizzes that rely on luck with easy questions. Exams that rely on sheer luck. Goodluck, because you'll need it.
TERRIBLE PROF WOW
Took this course last year in the fall, midterm were reasonable. However, the final exam was absolutely brutal. For the first 10 minutes everyone was speechless during the exam. Ended up barely passing the course when I got 70's on the midterms. Would not recommend taking this course with Richard.
Tip for his lectures, bring a pillow because you will fall asleep and you dont want your head to slam on the table. Bring another pillow because your pillow will fall asleep and you dont want that to slam on the table also.
Get ready to not pass his course. It's like he only teaches you 1+12, and on the quiz, he asks what's the distance between Earth and Mars. LOL. Interesting experience.
Horrible professor, expects you to learn from his self-published, error filled textbook which won't fully explain concepts, and then tests you on concepts not in the book or lecture notes.. Finance has become the worst and hardest class I've taken at McMaster, and it's purely because of him.
I consider myself a good student with a good work ethic and strong grades. However, i have never been more frustrated with how poorly structured and taught a course is. The lectures, as well as the textbook, are utterly useless, unclear, and full of errors (textbook). In order to keep up grades I've had to google every concept on my own. Good luck:)
I brought some snacks to his lecture one time. Apparently I was making too much noise and he kicked me out. Awful prof
Horrible Prof
Failed the course last year with a 49.2%. Went to Richard Deaves begged him to let me pass. He told me no and that I should put more effort next time
Taking his class is like being handed an incomplete puzzle, except none of the pieces fit together. Plus, you have to independently use the puzzle to build a rocket and fly it to the moon.
Guys make sure to bring a sleeping bag to class. You'll need it.
Half the grade is dedicated to 5 online quizzes of which you are given an insufficient amount of time to complete them to the best of your capabilities. The other half is for the exam of which the number of preparation materials you can use also is insufficient. The quiz questions rarely have any relevance to things you would've used in preparation
This guy does not care, his lectures are boring and not engaging, all the questions on the quizzes are impossible to figure out in the time provided, and on top of it there are so many errors in his material you can never fully understand what is right and wrong cause he just writes stuff down and doesn't explain.
Richard Deaves is one of the best professors I have ever had! This man is my idol. People have to take it easy on this guy! This textbook is the most engaging piece of literature I have ever had the pleasure of using! Im surprised his textbook isn't a worldwide finance staple.
i was studying for my exam and got frustrated at this haram textbook that requires a rosetta stone to understand. i have accepted fate that I may not pass the final exam. his formula sheet needs another formula sheet to actually understand, and none of it is actually labeled. good luck everyone i hope you are on the other side of the bell thank u
Dr. Deaves was honestly the best prof I have had yet. I learned everything through him, and the finance exam today was a breeze. He taught me a lot and everything I would need to know to major in Finance. This guy truly is a REAL professor...
Only resources available in the class are by him. His lectures suck. His textbook sucks. There is no other prof. And he doesn't explain anything properly, you have to teach yourself the class through google, khan academy, Investopedia, Wikipedia. This is not intro to finance, his textbook is meant for advanced classes. Not easy to understand.
He is such a difficult professor he doesn't teach well at all nd the textbook for this class which is his own is wrong and needs to be thoroughly re read and re edited by him. The questions he gives not tests are 10 x harder than anything in his textbook, discussed in tutorial or taught by him in lecture. he is a nice guy but such a horrible prof
Okay please avoid at all costs. His course is all over the place, his textbook is overly complicated, his quiz/test questions are extremely difficult and involve lots of tricks to try to throw you off. This class will have you googling which M/C option is most commonly chosen. If you are an average student, you will struggle to simply pass.
This course should NOT be this hard. His self written book is full of errors, doesn't explain various concepts, and if that wasn't enough, his lectures are even worse. This year the online quizzes were a blessing, but at the same time 2 hours was not nearly enough time to complete them. But the exam... Yikes. If you get this prof, run.
He expects us to know so much about Finance, regardless that he's teaching an INTRODUCTORY course! I went to lectures and didn't understand a thing. His resources don't help at all since his questions are much harder than what's taught in class. Exam is in 2 hours and everyone is stressed about failing. Says a lot.
People constantly complain about how hard this course is, but I liked Deaves as a professor because he taught me discipline and didn't spoon feed me the course. I just wrote the final exam and it was very fair and in my opinion it was easier than it could've been. I think he's a great guy.
He'll briefly mention the most insignificant thing in the textbook, and won't return to explain it. He'll also make it a question on the exam. The textbook is more like a diary. Countless facts stated but not elaborated or justified. Lectures are even worse, they're summaries of the text and he'll do calculations without explaining what's going on.
Richard Deaves is the sole reason why I think the McMaster Commerce program is not as good as it could be. I've put countless hours into studying for this bs course, taking away from other courses, and still failed the course. From reading his textbook multiple times, I can confidently say I have still learnt nothing
If anyone thinks he cares about his students, he doesn't. You cannot say he cares when he decides to make a 50% of your mark, based on a ridiculous 2 hr multiple choice test. Does he not understand he is actually ruining peoples lives by being a horrible professor and it amazes me how the dean hasnt done anything about this prof yet.
Terrible prof. Towards the end of the year, you think you grasped the course because you figured out how to do the quizzes (hint: do in groups) but the final exam is nothing like the class. Going to class makes you even more confused than just reading the slides and textbook. Would not wish this prof on my worst enemy
Easy course, not much content. They changed the course from having midterms to 5 10% quizzes instead, which is great. You can breeze through the notes a couple hours before the quiz and practice, then write the quiz open book and get high marks going into the exam.
Amazing and best Prof at Mac! There is nothing wrong with deaves; his quizzes are extremely easy (final exam was a joke). As long as you put in a bit of effort you're guaranteed at least an 11. People who do badly in this course are slackers and/or just don't care. Just b/c he wants you to work doesn't mean he's terrible. Shame on you all!
doesn't know how to teach nor write a textbook. investopedia will be your best friend.
Amazing prof. Wow. Why are people complaining about this prof? Getting a 12 was super easy
Sick prof!!!! Highly recommend everyone who wants a tough but caring prof and wants to learn a lot!
this guy was the biggest wasteyute alive, banish him back to sudbury
Writes and publishes his own textbook which has many errors. He should not be teaching an intro to finance course rather he would be better suited for upper year/Masters finance courses.
